† PAULSON Christa Lyne Paulson, age 52, a most giving and caring woman, was born in Belding, Michigan on September 8, 1971 to Matthew Eric and Jody Lyne Burns Paulson. She passed away on September 26, 2023, at Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan with her parents at her side. Her illness was a brief but hard fought battle against a very aggressive form of breast cancer. She won her battle and is now forever free from all pain.
Christa was a 1989 graduate of Belding High School and graduated with an associate degree from Davenport College of Business (now Davenport University). She was a long-time secretary for TerHorst Rinzema Construction Company in Ada.
Christa loved many things, but her biggest love was for her son, Mackenzie. She was a life-long reader of mystery and suspense novels, especially enjoying those featuring the FBI. Christa was always up for a road trip, whether taking Mackenzie on vacations in his younger years, driving her parents to out-of-state family reunions or just a quick trip to Hobby Lobby. She was accomplished in the art of counted cross stitch and for years won many awards for her exquisite work entered annually in the Needlework Department at the Ionia Free Fair. Christa looked forward all year long to helping at Paulson’s Pumpkin Patch during fall harvest. Mourning her loss are her son, Mackenzie Eric Paulson, parents, Matt & Jody Paulson, brother, Dennis Paulson, Very Special Cousin, Amy Paulson, all of Belding and her maternal grandmother, Donna Jesko Burns of Grand Rapids. Also surviving her are aunts and uncles, Irene Paulson Terpstra of Grand Rapids, Francis Snyder Paulson of South Carolina, Yvette and Bob Paulson of California, Halla and Carl Geiger of St. Johns, Lois and Jerry Paulson of Belding, Mary Paulson Melinn of Byron Center, Connie (Jesko) and James Wright of Florida, Jan and Jack Jesko of Grand Ledge and numerous cousins. Christa was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Walter and Gertrude Paulson, maternal grandfather, Ridgeway Burns and uncles and aunt, Raymond Paulson, Norman Paulson, Clair Melinn and Donald and Elaine Paulson. Following Christa’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. A visitation will be held on Sunday October 8, 2023, from 2-4 PM at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding.
Anyone wishing to remember Christa with a charitable donation may want to consider the B Foundation or the Ionia County Animal Shelter. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Christa would want to remind us to pay attention to medical symptoms that continue and don’t seem normal. Get them checked out! Please consider becoming a blood donor. The need is great. To share a message of condolence, order flowers or light a candle in memory of Christa, please visit the website of the funeral home at www.jffh.com

NEWS FROM THE DEPOT
Boston-Saranac Historical Society
FRANKENSTEIN CA -
BOOSE? Apparently not the case.
You may have noticed the ongoing, and much needed, repair and restoration of the caboose sitting on the grounds of the BSHS Depot museum. As with any project dealing with a wooden structure that
is very close to its 120th birthday, while peeling back the layers of previous repairs and patches, little (and sometimes big) hints as to its origins come to light. Interesting as well as compelling historical features are revealed.
Our caboose arrived in Saranac back on July 18,
“Detroit & Toledo Shoreline (Maintenance of Way) #101” caboose, sometime after 1966 but before the 1980s. 1997. It was delivered by Jerry Tyler, who had purchased it from the Coopersville & Marne Railway before restoring it. It is possible that Mr. Tyler may not have known where it was originally, before arriving in Coopersville. Coopersville was the known “home” of anything “Grand Trunk” or “Grand Trunk Western,” and that plus the fact the caboose had little (or none) of its original decals or numbering might have been the reason that it was repainted and lettered for “Grand Trunk.” Unfortunately, it was sold as a “Grand Trunk” caboose and not as an “unknown caboose, now lettered for GT.”
The most distinctive clue as to our caboose’s origin is the cupola. The “bombay” style of roof, also known as a “roller coaster” roof (for obvious reasons) was primarily a trademark of the Wabash railroad. However, photographic evidence points to its true heritage – not as an ex-Wabash but as one of (12) identical cabooses of that same model from the manufacturer sold in 1904 to the Detroit-Toledo Shoreline Railroad (D&TSL). Recently, the BSHS Executive Board was privileged to meet with Kyle Rosol of the Coopersville & Marne Railway who presented photographic evidence of the prior life of our caboose. D&TSL caboose # 101 was in use until the 1970s or -80s, which may make it one of the last wooden cabooses used in active service. Towards the end of its service life, it had been marked “M of W” (maintenance of way), meaning that it did not need to meet as high a standard as normal railroad equipment. After its final retirement, tarped and patched over with scrap wooden planks, #101 ended up in Saginaw, MI before being sold to Coopersville.
Mr. Rosol reported that his extensive research reveals that the caboose is entirely original, albeit some parts have been lost over time. Areas that were studied
and compared to the available photographs, aside from the cupola, were the undercarriage toolbox, plating ends, vestibules and vestibule roof line, back plates, and hand rails. Missing? The Fresnel (cupola) lens was boarded over, and the cupola struts were removed during an earlier (pre-Saranac) restoration.
“It is no Frankenstein, but rather an old and misunder-
stood caboose which had the misfortune of being given a false identity for nearly 30 years.” – Kyle Rosol, CPMY Freight Conductor (Friends of the Coopersville & Marne Railway)
