State Rep. Gina Johnsen (R-Lake Odessa) has criticized Democrat-sponsored proposals that would repeal health, safety, and reporting standards for abortion clinics, pay for elective abortions with taxpayer funds, eliminate informed consent requirements, and permit partial-birth abortion, an extremely unpopular late-term abortion procedure.

House Bills 4949-4959, the socalled “Reproductive Health Act” approved by the House Health Policy Committee today, remove Michigan’s medical licensing and safety requirements for abortion facilities. Johnsen said the dangerous, unpopular changes have nothing to do with what Michigan voters expected when Proposal 3 passed in 2022.
“Regardless of stance on abortion, this simply isn’t what voters agreed to when they voted to pass Prop. 3 last November,” Johnsen said. “This isn’t a pro-life or pro-choice issue – this is a women’s health issue that deserves thoughtful consideration and an open dialogue before making detrimental changes to our lawbooks and, ultimately, the safety of patients.”
Among other changes, HBs 4949-4959 would: Repeal the law requiring licensing and inspection for abortion clinics to ensure proper health and safety procedures are followed. In 2012, unsafe conditions in a Muskegon clinic
demonstrated the importance of proper health and safety guidelines.
Eliminate requirements for abortion providers to report the abortions they perform and any instances of a woman facing complications or death as the result of an abortion.
End protections that ensure women have the opportunity to provide informed consent before getting an abortion, with at least 24 hours to review information in non-emergency situations.
Repeal Michigan’s prohibition on partial-birth abortions, although federal law also prevents the gruesome late-term abortion procedure.
Allow, and in some cases require, taxpayer funding to pay for medically unnecessary abortions.
Polling conducted by Marketing Resource Group this year shows that 90% of Michigan voters support the licensing and inspection of abortion facilities for health and safety purposes. Further, 63% of Michigan voters support a 24-hour waiting period before an abortion to allow a woman to provide informed consent.
The poll also found that 67% of Michigan voters support requiring parents to consent to their minor child having an abortion; Democrats decided against repealing Michigan’s parental consent law for now, given how unpopular the move would be.

BARRY CO. FAIRGROUNDS, 1350 N. M-37 HWY., HASTINGS, MICHIGAN FRIDAY MORNING,
The month of October has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in October 1923.
• Switzerland issues a new decree on October 1 that bans the display of fascist emblems or the wearing of black shirts. The decree is issued in response to fascists who wanted the region to join Italy.
• A standoff begins in the Kentucky State Penitentiary on October 3 after three convicted murderers obtain guns and kill three guards in an ultimately failed attempt to escape. Authorities eventually storm the barricaded inmates on October 6 and discover the inmates had been dead for about two days.
• John Charles Carter is born in Illinois on October 4. The boy ultimately adopts the screen name Charlton Heston and becomes an Academy Award-winning actor and influential political activist.
• Cao Kun is elected president of the Republic of China on October 5. Cao is deposed just 13 months later after revelations surface regarding a bribery scandal that calls his election into question.
• Boston Braves shortstop Ernie Padgett turns an unassisted triple play on October 6. To date, the feat has been accomplished just 15 times in Major League Baseball history.

• On October 10, the New York Yankees play the crosstown Giants in the first ever World Series game at Yankee Stadium. The Giants win the game when Casey Stengel hits an inside-the-park homerun with two outs in the top of the ninth inning.
• Nicaraguan President Diego Manual Chamorro dies suddenly on October 12. His Vice President, Bartolomé Martinez, cannot be found, forcing Interior Minister Rosendo Chamorro to serve as acting president. Martinez is eventually inaugurated as President of Nicaragua on October 27.
• A bomb explodes outside Cubs Park (now known as Wrigley Field) on October 14. No arrests are ultimately made, though the incident is attributed to union agitators angry at a decision by Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis,

Quilling Club
Have you ever heard of Quilling? It is the art of using strips of paper that are rolled, looped, curled, twisted and otherwise manipulated to create different shapes, and glued together to create decorative designs. Quilling designs can be used to decorate greeting cards, pictures, boxes, and more. The library is starting a drop-in quilling club in October, which will meet on the second Wednesday of each month—October 11 and November 8—from 6:30-7:30. We’ll work on our projects together, show each other new techniques we've learned, and share ideas.
Coming events (up to 30 words) can be placed in this column at no charge for nonprofit organizations. Deadline is noon on Thursday. Email to kara.raimer@att.net; send to the Ionia County Shopper’s Guide, Box 46, Saranac, MI 48881; or fax to 616-642-6040. Remember to include your name, address, and phone number.
