† HALE Renee Ruth Hale, 92, passed away quietly in her home July 10, 2023 surrounded by her loving sons.

Renee was born January 21, 1931 in Lyons Township, Ionia, Michigan , daughter of the late James and Celia (Crandall) Winright. She married Fredrick Hale in 1959. He preceded her in death on December 7, 2009.

Renee led a dedicated life to loving the earth and much of the people she was around. She would chat with most anyone she could make conversation with, anything but shy.

She was a great teacher and had a wide spectrum of knowledge about the world, that of a sage.

She invested much time on her family orchard raising honeybees and selling apples throughout the 70s till the early 2000s.

Renee also loved traveling and was a multi-talented artist. Since her early days she had spent time as an equestrian and raising cattle. She played the banjo and guitar, wrote songs and poems, and painted. In her leisure she also enjoyed gardening, going to bird shows and music jams with her past sister, Christine. Throughout the 80s she invested much time into family genealogy, researching extensively. History was her passion.

Renee’s life was a song, and to many that knew her, her special soul will be missed.

She was preceded in death by brothers Benny, Junior, Walter, George and Carl. Sisters Pauline and Christine as the last surviving members of her family.

She is survived by sons Mike and Dan Hale of Berlin Township, along with Lon (Kristin Katt) Hale of Norway, Mich. Grandkids; John Hale of Los Angeles, Calif. Hannah Hale of Corvallis, Oregon, Aiden and Airen Hale of Norway, Mich.

She will be interned at Lett’s Cemetery, Berlin Township on Thursday, August 24th at 2pm with a graveside memorial.

† JENKS Christine M. Jenks age 76 of Ionia passed away August 15, 2023. She was born October 28, 1946, in Rockford, Illinois the daughter of Howard and Pauline Nicholls. She married William S. Jenks December 12, 1977, in Greenville.

Christine loved to Hunt, Fish, and go to Car Shows with her Husband Bill. She loved going out to eat especially for seafood.

Surviving is her loving Husband Bill Jenks of Ionia. Stepdaughters; Jill Bernadyn of East Jordan and Vonnie Mae (Bo) Davis of Saginaw. Grandchildren; Fannie Mae (Rico) Moreno and Dave Davis. She was preceded in death by her Parents, Stepdaughters Connie and Billie Jo and Brothers Rodney and Charles.

Local Business Volunteers to Beautify M21

Michigan has over one-hundred and twenty-thousand miles of scenic, beautiful highways within its borders. They may not be in perfect condition all the time, but we love them anyway. Unfortunately, with over seven million registered motorists in the state of Michigan, not every motorist takes the best of care of the roads and highway systems. The terrible conditions of the roads and highways within Michigan cost the average motorist about $640 each year to maintain.

Wanting to make a difference in the environment for the better once more, the staff of CHO Dispensary (located at 75 N. Bridge St. in Saranac, and at 100 E. Main St. Suite C in Stanton) set out to give back to the community that surrounds them. Waking up early on the mornings of July 20th through July 23rd, the staff at CHO put on their safety gloves, reflective vests, sunglasses, and then hit the pavement. With the morning sun blazing hot and the humidity high, Saranac store manager Daniel got his CHO team together and began the official MDOT-approved Adopt-a-Highway clean up along M-21 in Ionia.

“I am so happy that CHO was able to fill a need in the community. We’ve got an awesome and caring staff - that really showed this week. I’m super proud of all of them”, said Stanton store manager

“It was quite surprising to see the narrow variety of items that were discarded by motorists along the side of the road.

Whatever it was, we got it, and made sure to leave the area more beautiful than we found it. I’m really proud of the way that everybody came together for this event”, commented Daniel.

“Overall, it went pretty smooth. Got more trash than was anticipated”, stated Dylan, a team leader at CHO. Covering a total distance of six miles of highway, the staff from CHO were able to safely collect – and properly dispose of – approximately ten full MDOT-approved large garbage bags of trash, debris, and litter. This will have been their fourth time returning to this specific Adopt-a-Highway location.

IONIA, MI – Nurses at Sparrow Ionia Hospital have received a five-star rating for the incredible way they communicate with patients and listen to their needs.

Becker's Hospital Review, a medical industry trade magazine that reports on, as well as conducts, its own research on healthcare gave Sparrow Ionia, along with Sparrow Carson and Eaton hospitals, five stars for nurse communication.

Nurses from University of Michigan Health also received five stars. Sparrow is part of U-M Health. The five-star ranking was based on data compiled from three survey questions that summarize how well patients feel their nurses clearly explained things, listened carefully to the patient, and treated the patient with courtesy and respect.
