Well, I would say that folks in Saranac are partial to parades --- considering that the annual “Bridgefest” parade (sponsored by the Saranac Community Association) is scheduled for this Saturday, August 26, 2023.

Take a closer look at the accompanying photo to this article. Along the lower edge is written the caption “Parade Aug. 20, 1913 Saranac MI Huntley Photo.” Not to state the obvious, but that parade also was in August but 110 years ago!

A.W. Huntley (Huntley Photo) was one of the first pharmacists in Saranac, and the one responsible for the photo chronicles of the early days in Saranac. Huntley provided us with a photographic timeline of significant people, places, and events in and around our village.

It is not at all unusual that early pharmacists would also be a photographer, and that had to do with their tools and equipment. One of the earliest forms of photography (1840’s – 1860’s) was the daguerreotype. It involved exposing a silver-plated sheet of copper to chemical fumes. Since the “dag” is on polished silver, it is reflective like a mirror – with the image appearing to almost float. The next generation of images (1855’s – 1865’s) were the ambrotype. They were produced by wet collodion plating or an emulsions process, with the positive picture created from an “underexposed” negative (on glass) placed against a black background.

By the turn of the century (1900’s) tintype photography was replacing the more expensive daguerreotype (polished silver plate) and ambrotype (translucent glass plate) of picture taking, as the tintype image was on an iron plate.

Safely housed within your Boston-Saranac Historical Society’s

archives are the remaining Huntley “glass negatives” (ambrotypes). With the help of Roger VanVleck (former school teacher and retired professional photographer, and a current member of the BSHS), I have learned that these glass plates were first housed within the “A.W. Huntley Druggist” storefront on Bridge Street. Warren Chadwick (“Chad’s Hardware” at southwest corner of Bridge and Main – what is now “Saranac Hardware”) employed Roger one summer (many moons back), and knowing of Roger’s interest in photography, offered possession of the Huntley glass plates to Roger. After a time, Roger donated these glass negatives (with their corresponding “positive” images) to the local Saranac library.

It is from the Saranac-Clarksville Library that the Saranac Depot Museum received this important photo chronicle of early Saranac history. Many of these early images are readily available for viewing – not only in the latest “Saranac – 150 years) book offered for sale at the Depot during the 2023 Bridgefest – but from a recently formed Facebook ™ (group)/Saranac Area Past and Present. Merklinger/Miller, age 74, of Lowell and Ionia, Michigan passed away on August 6th, 2023. She was born on August 14th of 1948 to Harvey and Lena Merklinger of Lowell. Carolyn was one of 8 children, 3 girls and 5 boys.

Carolyn (Granny) went on to marry Roger Miller and had 2 children, Joseph Michael Merklinger and Carol Lee Miller and eventually had 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, whom she enjoyed being with very much.

She also LOVED the color yellow, Country music, Busch Light and watching the birds and squirrels out her window.

She is proceeded in death by her mother and father, 2 sisters, 3 brothers and her son.

She is survived by her daughter Carol Lee Miller/Yurkinas, her grandchildren, Misti Yurkinas (Jeremy Vandeusen), Micheal Yurkinas, Madison Lombardo (Noah Barna) and adoptive grandchild, Mary Lou Ogea. Great grandchildren, Aubrey Vandeusen, Gracie Kay Ernst, Greasyn Micheal Yurkinas, and Titan Adam Barna, also her niece Chavonne - Sissy Watters (Ron Staines).

† SATTERLEE Nancy Louise Satterlee age 89 of Ionia, MI passed away August 4, 2023. She was born on October 8, 1933 in New Hampshire, the daughter of Arthur and Ruth (Bennett) Henderson. Nancy married Jerrold Satterlee on October 8, 1954 in New Hampshire, he passed away January 24, 2018.

Nancy enjoyed swimming, synchronized swimming, knitting, crocheting, traveling and ice skating. She loved spending time with her family.

Nancy is survived by her children; William (Lois) Satterlee of Ionia, Wayne (Diane) Satterlee of Grand Rapids, Danny Satterlee of Ionia and Marsha (David) Kohloff of Ionia. Grandchildren; Chris (Monika) Satterlee, Jeremy Kohloff, Stacie (Marcus) McCoy, Shannon Kohloff, Eric (Catherine) Satterlee, Joshua (MacKinzie) Satterlee, Sean Satterlee, Andrew Satterlee, Bree (David) Cobb and Rachel (Dan) Brown. The Saranac Clarksville District Library will be holding a public hearing to discuss the proposed October 1,2023- September 30,2024 annual budget on Wednesday, August 16th at the Clarksville location which is located at 165 N. Main St, Clarksville, MI 48815. The public hearing will start at 6:30 pm.
