Back to school supplies checklist
their friends again each day, while others may lament the loss of carefree days under the warm summer sun. Regardless of which category students fall into, all will need the right supplies to begin the new school year on the right foot. Some teachers now contact students’ parents prior to the start of a new school year to let them
know which supplies kids will need during the year. But the following grade-based rundown of supplies can help families get a head-start on back to school shopping.
KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarten marks most students’ initial introduction to formal schooling, and this exciting year of school is filled with lots of fun and new experiences. Some of the more common supplies kids need for kindergarten include:
• Pencils
• Colored pencils and crayons
• Washable markers
• Erasers
• Pencil case
• Pencil sharpener
• Glue sticks
• Blunt tipped scissors
• Tissues
• Backpack
• Lunchbox/bag
• Headphones
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Elementary school students typically need different supplies based on which grade they’re in.
Children between first and third grade may be asked to bring many of the same supplies as students in kindergarten, including pencils, washable markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, and children’s scissors. But first, second and third grade students also may be asked to bring some additional supplies, including:
• Ruler
• Pencil grips
• Index cards
• Wide-ruled notebooks
• A box for supplies, like pencils
FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADERS
will likely be asked to bring supplies that align more with academics than arts and crafts. Such supplies may include:
• Calendar
• Personal organizer
• Binders
• Loose-leaf paper
• Spiral notebooks
• Calculator
• Pens
• Plastic folders
• Highlighters
• Book covers
MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL
By the time children reach middle
school and high school, parents are well-versed in back-to-school shopping and likely know what is required. But some of the more unique items parents may be asked to provide for students in these grades include:
• Graphic calculator
• Graph paper
• Permanent markers
• Combination lock
• Protractor
• White-out
• Three-ring binders
Teachers are a great resource that can help students and their parents as they begin back-toschool shopping. Families are urged to reach out to educators or visit school websites to determine if there are any specific items kids will need during the school year.

Tame traffic-related stress
Aggravation on the nation’s roadways has become a frequent topic of conversation over the last decade or so. Incidents that involved traffic-related acts of violence have gained increased attention over that span.
The automotive group AAA estimates that nearly eight out of 10 drivers demonstrate aggressive driving behaviors. While data indicating the number of road rage cases per state is not available, The Trace’s study on road rage with a firearm found 522 people were shot in 2021 due to road rage, and that Texas, Florida and California have the most road rage incidents involving guns. Road rage is the extreme outcome of impatience or frustration behind the wheel. Many times this frustration stems from traffic-related stress. There are more cars on the road than ever before, which can intensify stressful traffic conditions. Drivers can take steps to reduce stress while behind the wheel and recognize behaviors

that may contribute to road rage.
• Don’t rush. Leave plenty time to get to a destination. You are less likely to be impatient and react to traffic stressors if you are racing the clock.
• Calm down. If there is something that has angered or upset you, take time to calm down before getting behind the wheel.
• Be patient. Recognize that someone driving slowly may be lost or aging with diminished abilities.
• Keep a safe distance. Tailgating can create animosity among drivers. By leaving room, you can avoid aggressive interactions between drivers that can contribute to frustration.
• Don’t honk unnecessarily. Honking out of frustration is unproductive and also may exacerbate your levels of stress and anger other drivers.
• Take an alternative route. If
you know that certain roadways are plagued by traffic, then figure out a route to avoid the traffic, even if it may be longer.
• Change your schedule. It’s not called “rush hour” for nothing. Certain times of the day feature busier roadways than others. If possible, alter your schedule so that you commute during off-peak hours.
• Share the driving. Split driving duties with others, particularly when feeling stressed out. Breaking up particularly long trips among a few drivers can relieve anxiety. Driving can be stressful, but there are various ways to mitigate feelings that may escalate into anger and road rage.

THESE DESSERT BARS ARE PEACHY KEEN
Fresh Peach Crumble Bars
Yield 20
Crust/Crumb topping:
1 cup granulated sugar
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup unsalted butter cold, cut into cubes
1 large egg, lightly beaten Peach layer: ½ cup granulated sugar
In this recipe for “Fresh Peach Crumble Bar,” peaches are presented as a cross between a cake and cookie.
Summer is a time of year when people can enjoy their pick of fresh fruit at farm stands, supermarkets and other retailers. Many fruit trees, plants and bushes are ready for harvest in the spring and summer, meaning there’s no limit to the number of delicious recipes one can whip up with these sweet offerings. Peaches are a favorite ingredient in many different types of desserts, from cobblers to pies. But in this recipe for “Fresh Peach Crumble Bar,” peaches are presented as a cross between a cake and cookie. Enjoy this recipe, courtesy of Saving Room for Dessert, as adapted from AllRecipes.com.
Icing: 1 cup powdered sugar ¼ teaspoon almond extract 1 tablespoon milk (more or less for desired consistency)
1. Preheat oven to 350 F if using a glass pan or dark metal pan, or 375 F for a light metal pan. Lightly grease or spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan and set aside.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 cup of sugar, 3 cups of flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Using a pastry cutter, blend in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse sand. Add the lightly beaten egg and mix until the dough starts to hold together, but is still crumbly. Gently press a little more than half the dough into the prepared pan. (Optional: Use a food processor to process these ingredients.)
3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch and cinnamon. Add the diced peaches and toss to combine. Drizzle the lemon juice over the peaches and toss to coat. Pour the peach mixture over the crust and spread evenly.
4. Using your hands, press together handfuls of the remaining crumb topping to create clumps. Scatter the clumps and remaining crumbled topping over the fruit layer, leaving some peaches showing through.
5. If using a glass pan, bake at 350 F for 50 to 55 minutes or until lightly browned. If using a metal pan, bake at 375 F for 40 to 45 minutes. Cool completely, then chill before cutting and icing.
6. Whisk together the powdered sugar, almond extract and milk. Drizzle on the bars just before serving. TF248195
