† HALE Terry Lewis Hale age 71 of Saranac passed away July 14, 2023. He was born June 29, 1952 in Ionia the son of Eldon L. and Rose M. (Craven) Hale.
Terry was a Member of the Ronald Township Fire Department as a First Responder. He loved to Unicycle and could juggle at the same time. Terry enjoyed performing as a Clown and Magician. He also was a musician who played the drums.
Surviving Terry is his Sister-in-law, Connie Hale of Saranac. Niece; Stacey (Jeremiah) Kirby of Saranac. Nephew; Eric Hale of Saranac. Great Nephews; Michael Kirby, Christopher Kirby, Brennan Hale and Wade Hale.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Brother Bruce Hale and Sister Barb Hollis. Cremation has taken place and Graveside Services will be held at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Palo. † HAZEL Lee Junior Hazel, age 80, of Lake Odessa, Michigan passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on July 14, 2023. He was born February 23, 1943 to Lee A. and Ida Elnora (Lucas) Hazel. He graduated from Lake Odessa High School in 1961. He served in the Army from 1961 to 1963 in Germany with missile transport. He married the love of his life 58 1/2 years ago, Roxie (McCaul) on December 12, 1964. Lee retired from General Motors after 33 years. He loved sports and played basketball until he was in his 70’s. He was a coach for little league and women’s softball. He played men’s and co-ed softball with his family. He had just started to “Love” golf.
He is survived by his wife, Roxie and beloved dog Pixie, son Lance (Darcy), daughters Lesa (Gary) Raimer, Lori (Tom) Haskins, six grandchildren; Tyler (Terri) Raimer, Kaelee (JJ) Olin, Blake (Abbey) Haskins, Adam (Kaylee) Haskins, Lauren (Makay) Markwart, and Logan Hazel. He is also survived by his great grandchildren Kayden, Adelaide, Zayne, Arya, Harry, Easton, Roxy, Zoey, and Beckett. Brother Richard (Delores) Hazel, brothers in-law Neil (Yvonne) McCaul, Steve (Jana) McCaul, sisters in-law Betty (Terry) Haskins, Sue Elliott and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, In-laws Berton and Doris McCaul, sister and brother in-law Betty and Art Erickson, brothers in-law Alex McCaul and Gary Elliott.

† LISTERMAN Thomas Jay Listerman, age 79 of Ionia, passed away Saturday July 15, 2023. Tom lived in Ronald Township, Ionia MI all his life. He started Listerman and Sons Excavation in 1967, employing his 3 sons, as well as other members of his extended family throughout the years.
Just a few of his many excavation projects were the Ionia Sentinel Standard building, the State rest area in Grayling, hundreds of area drain fields, driveways and building sites, as well as a number of jobs in state prisons throughout Michigan. His son Aaron, and later Tom, owned and operated Nickelplate Store on Nickelplate Road for a number of years.
He was a master truck driver, builder, black powder enthusiast, mechanic, and farmer; talents which he taught to his sons throughout their lives. One of his greatest passions was deer hunting. His thoughts and actions regarding the deer management on his beloved 123-acre farm was well known throughout the community; he was adamant in his opinions with his actions proving his successes. He loved the stock tractor pulls at the local fairs and Ionia farm power. You could also find him at the area casinos, which treated him well. He looked forward to camping and riding in the Pigeon River State Forest among the elk herd on his beloved horses, Taxman and UT with his wife, Bonnie and her sister Jeannie and their friends at least twice a year. He was a past contributor and donor to the Ionia Free Fair, a former member of the Ionia County Hunting and Fishing Club, and current member of Michigan Trail Riders Association.
Surviving Tom are his wife, Bonnie (Beach), brother Larry (Janet) Listerman, sister-in-law Terri Listerman all of Ionia, sister-in-law Jeannie Beach of Muir, son in law Scott Gorby, sons Westley (Diane Sayers) Listerman, Trent (Annette) Listerman, Aaron (Angie) Listerman all of Ionia. Grandchildren include Sarah (Randy) Schmid, Morgan (Ron) Schmid, Garth (Sarah) Gorby all of Ionia, Bronwyn (Mike) Whitcomb of Clarksville, Emily Listerman of Ionia, Ashley (Nate) Doty of Muir, Brenton (Kirsten) Listerman, A.Jay (Emma Thomas) Listerman, and Owen (Angelica Barnhart) Sayers all of Ionia. His great grandchildren are Lauryn, Allyson and Jaysen Schmid, Kaylee, Bryce, Carson Schmid, Garrett, and Colton Gorby, Kelliary Whitcomb, Elanore Listerman, Avaeya, Addison, and Graylee Listerman.
Tom was preceded in death by his mother and father, June and Bill (Francis) Listerman, brother Charles (Chuck) Listerman, his beloved daughter Kelli Gorby, neighbor Mike Butler and riding buddy Steve Higbee.
A Celebration of life and memorial will be held at North Plains Cemetery at 11 AM on August 12th for family, many friends, neighbors, and business associates wishing to pay respects to Tom’s memory. † MEYERS Robert “Rob” Smith Meyers age 44 of Saranac passed away July 16, 2023. He was born on October 26, 1978, in Grand Rapids, MI the son of William and Suzanne (Nelson) Meyers. Rob was a graduate of Saranac High School class of 1997. He enjoyed playing football in high school. He loved riding motorcycle’s, going to bonfires, and playing video games. He was an avid U of M fan. Surviving is his parents, Bill and Sue Meyers of Saranac; Siblings, Roger (Michelle) Meyers of Belding and Becky (Nick) Gnuse of Saranac; nieces and nephews, Kelsey Gnuse, Kylee Gnuse, Kaden Gnuse, Ayden Pellerito and Collin Pellerito and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

† NORTON Bernard T. Norton, Jr., affectionately known as Bernie, passed away in his hometown of Lakeview on July 14, 2023. Born in Lakeview to the late Bernard Sr. and Alberta (Smith) Norton. Surviving Bernie is his beloved wife, Sherri Norton of Newaygo; daughters, Angela Norton of Cedar Springs, Autumn Gibbard of Mt. Pleasant, and April (Nicholas) Osburn of Mt. Pleasant; sons, Michael Norton of Morley, Tom (Kate) Norton of Port Hope, Josh (Casey) Witter of Grand Ledge, Nate Witter of St. Johns, and Dwight (Trisha) Perkin of Sand Lake. Bernie is also survived by 17 grandchildren; his sisters, Dixie Sykes of Grand Rapids and Laura Bradford of St. Louis; many nieces and nephews; his beloved dogs, Buddie, Daisy, and Pepper; and his cat, Boo.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Dan Bradford, and his lifelong friend, Pat “Ralphie” Derosha.
Bernie was a dedicated employee at the Meijer Distribution center for 41 years, retiring in 2013. His work ethic and commitment to his job were admired by his colleagues and friends. The strong relationships he built during his career often extended beyond the workplace, with many of his co-workers becoming his hunting companions.
Family was Bernie’s number one priority in life. He was a Vietnam Veteran whose experience shaped his understanding and appreciation of the importance of family and unity. Bernie’s love for his family was evident in the time he spent with them, often cooking and grilling for family gatherings. His love for food was infectious, and his culinary skills and famous Mac & Cheese will be fondly remembered by all. Bernie’s hugs were legendary, a warm embrace that comforted and reassured.
Bernie had a passion for the outdoors, which was evident in his love for deer hunting, fishing, and bird hunting. He often spent his free time making food plots and training his bird dogs, hobbies that brought him immense joy and satisfaction. His love for nature was not just a pastime but a way of life that he shared with his family and friends.
Bernie’s legacy is one of love, devotion, and service. His selfless nature and friendly demeanor endeared him to all who knew him. His love for his family, friends, and animals was immeasurable, and his dedication to his work was commendable. Bernie’s life was a testament to the power of love, the strength of family, and the joy of friendship.
A celebration of Bernie’s life is being planned for a later date.

Non-Homestead Renewal ... vote Tuesday August 8
On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, voters in the Saranac School District will be asked to vote to renew the operating millage. This tax is levied only on “non-homestead property” which includes all taxable property other than principal residence, qualified agricultural property, and certain other property classifications. Most non-homestead property taxes are levied on industrial, commercial, business and rental properties, and second homes. This millage does not affect the rate on homeowners primary residences. Voters last approved a renewal in November 2014. This renewal will raise approximately $768,456 each year for Saranac Community Schools. This millage is an 18 mill tax levy on business, industrial, and rental properties within a given school district. It is not a tax on a principal residence or other exempt properties. You might ask, “Will my home property tax rates increase?” The answer is no, the tax rate for a principal residence will remain the same. In fact, for both homeowners

and businesses alike, nothing will change. Homeowners do not pay this millage and businesses will continue to pay the millage rate they have already been paying because this a renewal of the millage that expires with the 2023 levy.
One might then wonder if home property taxes will go down if this is defeated. The answer is no, your home property tax rate will remain the same; the rate will drop only for industrial, commercial, business, and rental properties. However, the direct loss of this funding would adversely affect educational programs. For Saranac Community Schools, approval of the proposal will mean not only a continuation of more than $768,456 worth of direct local funding, but also the opportunity to continue current educational programs. A no vote will mean a loss of more than $768,456 dollars in direct revenue.
