Saranac Community Schools Non-Homestead
On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, voters in the Saranac School District will be asked to vote to renew the operating millage. This tax is levied only on “non-homestead property” which includes all taxable property other than principal residence, qualified agricultural property, and certain other property classifications. Most non-homestead property taxes are levied on industrial, commercial, business and rental properties, and second homes. This millage does not affect the rate on homeowners primary residences. Voters last approved a renewal in November 2014.
This renewal will raise approximately $768,456 each year for Saranac Community Schools. This millage is an 18 mill tax levy on business, industrial, and rental properties within a given school district. It is not a tax on a principal residence or other exempt properties. You might ask, “Will my home property tax rates increase?” The answer is no, the tax rate for a principal residence will remain the same. In fact, for both homeowners
Rep. Johnsen introduces measures to protect rights of law-abiding Michigan gun owners
State Rep. Gina Johnsen, RLake Odessa, is standing up for the rights of lawful gun owners in Michigan with two measures she recently introduced in the Michigan House.
Johnsen introduced House Bill 4831 to create the Second Amendment Financial Privacy Act, which would prohibit banks and credit card companies from requiring Michigan retailers to use specialized codes to flag firearms purchases.
“Using financial codes to flag lawful firearm purchases is a sneaky way to undermine our freedom and impose unnecessary control on law-abiding
and businesses alike, nothing will change. Homeowners do not pay this millage and businesses will continue to pay the millage rate they have already been paying because this a renewal of the millage that expires with the 2023 levy.
One might then wonder if home property taxes will go down if this is defeated.
The answer is no, your home property tax rate will remain the same; the rate will drop only for industrial, commercial, business, and rental properties. However, the direct loss of this funding would adversely affect educational programs. For Saranac Community Schools, approval of the proposal will mean not only a continuation of more than $768,456 worth of direct local funding, but also the opportunity to continue current educational programs. A no vote will mean a loss of more than $768,456 dollars in direct revenue.
Please vote Tuesday, August 8, 2023. Voting will take place at your regular precincts and absentee ballots are available at your township clerk’s office.
citizens,” Johnsen said. “If there’s a legitimate reason to suspect criminal activity, law enforcement can follow the proper procedures and get a search warrant. However, we cannot allow companies to pry into the lives of law-abiding citizens or act as government enforcers. We must protect the privacy and rights of responsible gun owners, and not allow intimidation or intrusion into their lives.”
Johnsen’s House Bill 4285 would allow CPL holders to carry their firearms on college and university campuses throughout Michigan.
“Law-abiding gun owners should be allowed to carry on college campuses,” Johnsen said. “Everyone deserves the right to protect themselves and others. Disarming responsible individuals only puts lives at risk. By trusting lawful citizens and implementing sensible policies, we can create a safer environment for students, faculty, and staff.”
House Bill 4831 was referred to the House Committee on Insurance and Financial Services for consideration. House Bill 4285 was referred to the House Government Operations Committee.

How to Protect Your Favorite Outdoor Gear
(StatePoint) With warmer weather here, more and more people are spending time on their decks, patios, and in their gardens and yards using outdoor products. From grills to furniture to mowers, 88% of Americans have invested in products dedicated for outdoor use and 65% of those that have use them at least several times a week, according to an Allstate Protection Plans survey. Unfortunately, 83% of those surveyed who own outdoor products have experienced damage to one or more of them. That damage has been more than a little expensive: Americans have spent over $44
billion repairing or replacing their outdoor products.
“It’s no surprise that the outdoor products we use so much this time of year, that make life so great during the warmer months, can be especially vulnerable to damage,” says Jason Siciliano,

global
creative director at Allstate Protection Plans. “What some people may not realize is that the same protection plans that are available for indoor furniture, electronics and major appliances are also available for outdoor products. They can be a great way to protect your investments in the great outdoors.”
The survey found that 65% of Americans do not have a protection plan for any of their outdoor products, and 56% were not even sure they could purchase one. With American households spending hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of dollars a year on outdoor equipment, furniture and supplies, adding protection can be a smart idea.
Beyond purchasing protection plans, Siciliano also recommends taking steps to extend the life of your outdoor products. For example, use the proper fuel in lawn care equipment, clean your grill and cover
it when it’s not in use, and apply protectant to furniture to guard against rust and sun damage. For specialty items like fire pits and patio heaters, be sure to read the instruction manuals and follow the manufacturer’s care and maintenance recommendations. Finally, at the end of the summer, store seasonal items in your garage or shed. For more information about product protection, look for Allstate Protection Plans at your favorite retailers. You can also visit www.allstateprotectionplans.com, which features tips and resources for making the most of your outdoor products, as well as tips and advice on maintaining your home electronics and appliances.
“When we take care of the outdoor items that make summer enjoyable and relaxing, we’re also protecting ourselves against the expensive repairs that can pop up every spring if we don’t,” says Siciliano. “That means more in our budgets for popsicles and lemonade.”

Sparrow Ionia caregiver receives award for speaking up for child
LANSING, MI -- A caregiver in Sparrow Ionia Hospital’s Emergency Department who recently raised the alarm about a child suspected of being in an harmful situation has been honored with the Sparrow Speak Up Award for advocating on behalf of patient and caregiver safety.
Patient Access Specialist DrewAnn Gladding noticed the child had a black eye and that the father did not know the patient’s birthdate or the correct spelling of their name. Gladding immediately contacted an administrator and police. The situation was investigated and authorities determined there was no foul play. The patient was accurately identified by mom, treated appropriately, and discharged from the hospital. “We encourage all of our caregivers to speak up when something doesn’t seem
right,” said Sparrow Ionia Hospital Patient Access Manager Angela Keehn. “Patient Access Specialists are the first people to have eyes on every patient, so speaking up with concerns and observations can greatly impact a patient’s care, and even save a life.”
The Speak Up Award is given quarterly to a Sparrow caregiver or team for speaking up on behalf of patient and caregiver safety. The health and safety of our patients, caregivers, and visitors is always our top priority.
Gladding has been a Patient Access Specialist at Sparrow Ionia for two years.
“I think speaking up is important because there are times where others may not be able to use their voice and

Air conditioning maintenance tips
There is no denying the relief cool air provides when the temperatures outdoors are particularly steamy. In fact, having a place to cool off is a necessity for those who have succumbed to heat exhaustion or have difficulty regulating their body temperatures.
Even though air conditioning can provide relief, some people are reluctant to turn it on because of the drain on electricity and the subsequent high energy bills that come with it. Certainly running the air conditioning can be costly, but regular maintenance helps a system to work more efficiently. It also enables homeowners to recognize issues that can lead to expensive repairs if left unchecked.
Here are some air conditioning maintenance tips to keep a system in top condition.
• Change the filters. Dirty, clogged filters can cause a system to work harder to cool down rooms, compromising efficiency. Check the HVAC system’s manufacturer recommendation for how frequently

to change the filters. Some may benefit from monthly replacement if the air is running constantly.
• Consider the MERV rating. The filter will have a minimum efficiency reporting value, or MERV, according to This Old House. The higher the number, the better the filtration. But a higher MERV rating requires more energy to pull air through the filter. Therefore, choose a balance of filtration and energy cost requirements.
• Maintain the outdoor unit. Clean the AC unit with a soft-bristle brush and vacuum the fins at the start of the season and if the unit becomes dirty from weather, pollen and other elements. Bent condenser or evaporator fins can restrict air flow that would normally pass through the air conditioning system. Gently straighten them

to improve air flow.
• Check and repair leaks. Airflow leaks through ductwork and with window AC units can reduce efficiency. Hold an incense stick or another smoldering item to check for leaks. If the smoke blows around, there is leakage. Use foil tape to seal small gaps and duct mastic for large ones. Stuff foam around a window unit and use taping as necessary.
• Supplement with a wholehouse fan. The Family Handyman says an attic-mounted fan pushes hot air out through the attic vents and draws cooler, outside air through open windows and doors. The whole-house fan can be used

to draw out most of the hot air before turning on the AC, or as a substitute on cooler days when having the AC on may not be crucial.
• Schedule annual maintenance. Homeowners may be able to handle various maintenance tasks, or they may want to have an HVAC technician come out and do the following: clean and inspect coils; adjust and replace fan belts; lubricate motors and bearings; inspect controls and safeties, check refrigerant; and determine if the unit is large enough for the home.
