5 fun facts about the month of June

June marks the official start of summer in the northern hemisphere, and it’s the month when summer vacation begins for millions of schoolchildren. Those two things make the month of June especially popular in many households. But June is about more than summer and the end of the school year. 1. June is named after Juno, the Roman goddess of childbirth and fertility.

2. The day with the potentially longest hours of sunlight of any day all year is in June. When the sun is out on the summer solstice, which marks the official start of summer and in 2023 is celebrated on Wednesday, June 21, people in the northern hemisphere can anticipate more hours of sunlight than any other day during the calendar year.

held the record for consecutive games played until Baltimore Orioles legend Cal Ripken, Jr., surpassed the man known as “The Iron Horse” on September 6, 1995.

† HOPPES Robert “Bob” Eugene Hoppes Jr. passed away peacefully with his family by his side on June 3, 2023. He was born on November 26, 1950 and lived in Portland, MI.

Bob worked at Reed and Hoppes in Portland his entire life alongside his family and employees. For Bob, family and the business he helped his parents build, meant the world to him. His family was his everything. Bob also loved working, but never considered it work. He loved to help people and would do anything for anyone at any time.

Bob was a distributor for Miller Industries. Being in the business for as long as he was, anyone that had a problem knew they could call and ask Bob. He was a major influence in the towing industry. It didn’t matter whether he was fabricating a small or large wrecker, helping a customer, answering questions, talking on the phone, or solving a problem, he loved his job.

In his spare time (if he had any), he also loved playing cards (especially euchre), shooting pool, playing games with his grandchildren, watching Westerns on TV, and going for car rides with his family. Like his dad, Bob’s idea of a vacation was working and spending time with his family.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sr. and Florence Hoppes; sister, Julie (Eugene) Ridenour; and brother in-laws, Terre Coffman and Carl Harris.

He is survived by Linda, his wife of 42 years; sons, Robert A. Hoppes and Daniel (Katelyn) Hoppes; three beloved grandchildren, Daniel, Hazel, and Lawton Hoppes; siblings, Kathlene Harris, Vicki (Al) Richar, Mary (Daniel) Ferguson, Joyce Hoppes, Jeanne (Thomas) Grawburg, Judy (Robert) Barr, Marsha (Daniel) Gambill, and John Hoppes; niece, Sabrina (Binit) Gambill; nephews, Robert Barr II and Grant Gambill; aunt Lucille Hoppes.

The family would like to acknowledge Joe Towner, a devoted “brother”, friend, and employee of 46 years. Bob and Joe spent many hours working side by side, discussing and building equipment, and doing recovery work together.

Bob will be missed dearly by all his family and anyone that knew him.

Funeral Services were held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge Street, Portland with the Rev. Dr. Marilyn V. Danielson of the First Congregational Church presiding. Interment will follow at Portland Cemetery. The family received friends from 2-5 PM and 6-8 PM Tuesday, June 6, 2023 and 11-1 PM Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at Lehman Funeral Home. † FARRELL Willard “Willy” Joseph Farrell II age 74 of Ionia passed away June 8, 2023, with complications during surgery in Lansing. He was born June 11, 1948, in Cincinnati, OH. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margie; infant daughter, Christy; brothers Hamont, Jack and Ricky.

He is survived by the love of his life and lifelong partner of 38 years, Kym Coryell; sisters, Charlotte Krueger, and Peggy (George) Shindorf; many nieces and nephews; brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Kay Baker and sister-in-law, Kelly Law, and family.

Cremation has taken place per his wishes. There will be no services. Arrangements in care of Lake Funeral Home of Ionia.

† KEHOE John William Kehoe, age 69, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Friday, June 2, 2023. John was born on May 11, 1954, the son of John and Helen (Thompson) Kehoe in Detroit. On June 10, 2009, he married the love of his life, Lynn. John loved camping, he also enjoyed working outside, tinkering, guns, and shooting. He was known to give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn, of Grand Rapids; children, Kathryn (Norman) Miller of Orleans, Kristine (Christopher) Dukes of Potterville, Deanne Irelan of Lansing, David Irelan of Holland, and Deborah (Westley) Smith of Colorado; sister, Annie Kehoe of Texas; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Sparrow Health System to become University of Michigan Health-Sparrow, effective April 1, 2024

LANSING, MI – Sparrow Health System will become University of Michigan Health-Sparrow, effective April 1, 2024, as part of Sparrow joining the Michigan Medicine clinical network, according to health system officials.

According to Sparrow leaders, they selected the new name to leverage the strength of the University of Michigan worldwide brand with the historical significance of the Sparrow brand.

“University of Michigan Health-Sparrow reflects a partnership going forward, building on the equity of both brands,” according to James Dover, Sparrow President and CEO. “Sparrow has an unmatched reputation in Mid-Michigan

while U-M Health is the preeminent health system in Michigan. The new name highlights a continued commitment to bringing patients the right care at the right time at the right place, closer to home.

Sparrow joined University of Michigan Health in April 2023, contributing significantly to what is now a $7.8-billion organization, the second largest health system in the state. According to Dover, more information will be provided later on the new names of individual entities within Sparrow.

Sparrow will continue to be known as Sparrow Health System in internal and external communications until April 1, 2024, when the new name becomes official.

A colorful garden in full bloom is an aesthetically appealing sight each spring and summer.

The pleasant aromas emanating from such spaces only add to their appeal.

Many variables contribute to a thriving garden, and perhaps none is more important than bees. North America is home to thousands of species of beers, but many of those species are experiencing dwindling populations. According to Scott McArt, an assistant professor of pollinator health in the Department of Entomology at Cornell University, 53 bee species have experienced population declines or range contractions over the last several decades. Individuals

accustomed to seeing bees as unwanted guests may wonder why that’s a problem. Though declining bee populations pose a number of problems, perhaps none is more relatable than the link between bees and food production. A recent study published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences noted that declines in both managed and wild bee populations raise significant concerns about long-term food security. Authors of the study noted that crop production would be higher if crop flowers received more pollination. That’s a significant benefit as the global population continues to increase, but it’s

also a notable benefit in the present-day from both a food security and economic perspective. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that commercial production of more than 90 crops relies on roughly 3,600 bee species. Declining bee populations could put that production in serious jeopardy and create a domino effect that impacts food security and individuals’ livelihoods. But all is not lost in the fight to restore bee populations. In fact, McArt indicated in a 2019 report that bee populations are thriving in agricultural and natural areas. But bee populations also must thrive in suburban and urban areas. Planting a

pollinator-friendly garden is one step McArt suggested gardening hobbyists can take to help restore bee populations. When planting to combat declining bee populations, homeowners should always look for native plants, as they are well-adapted to local climates and unlikely to upset local ecosystems. Local garden centers can be great resources for anyone looking to plant native species. According to HGTV, the following are just a handful of the many bee-friendly garden flowers and plants homeowners can consider for their gardens:
