Carol worked at Meijer and attended SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church. She was a lifelong member of the Ionia Moose and was an avid golfer.
Carol is survived by her children, Julia (Mark) Bennett , Stephen (Norma) Lazarus , Ruth (Sean) O`Malley of , Jonathan (Stacy) Lazarus and Joy (Dave) Struble ; siblings, Charles (Marion) Dowsett , James (Carol) Dowsett, Ruth (James) Christianson , and Sally Dowsett and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter, Beth Sue Lazarus and grandsons, Zechariah James Miller, Ryan Patrick Kent and Matthew Dwayne Wells. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m, Saturday, June 1, 2024 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church with Father John Ardis presiding. Visitation will be at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia on Friday 4-7 p.m. with a Vigil service at 6:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Carol’s name to Paulist Father’s. † CHRISTOPHER The Lord looked at the current situation on Earth and decided this emergency required one of the most experienced and capable volunteers available. He called on Margaret (Peg) Christopher. Never one to turn down a challenge or a new position, she rose to the occasion and joined him in heaven on January 13th, 2024. He knew she was highly qualified because she had easily been an officer and president for nearly every organization to which she belonged. She had a B.S. from Central Michigan University and a Masters in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin. She taught music in Ionia, Belding and Lakewood for over 40 years. Now she will gloriously shine as she directs a choir of angels.
The Lord needs a leader and positive communicator with passion, energy, confidence and faith. Peg is his gal! Her devotions, newsletters and creative presentations are legendary amongst her various organizations, including: The First United Methodist Church, the Ionia Association of Retired School Personnel, Advocates of Sparrow Hospital and the WCD MAHA, Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Women’s Festival Committee, The Literary Society and not least, the 438th Troop Carrier Group WWII.
Of course, the Lord knows that even heaven can use a boost from an ever prepared lifetime Girl Scout. Peg can lead the angels in grand march style, just as she did by founding the Dad Daughter Date Night, a popular event that danced on for decades. Many local residents will recall her as director and leader of all things musical and campy at the Girl Scout Little House Day Camp each summer. I’m sure she’ll be leading them all on a wonderful imaginary bear hunt in paradise.
The Lord can rest assured that Peg knows how to entertain. Her beautiful displays at the many Festival of Tables each year may even rival Leonardo da Vinci’s portrayal of the Last Supper. Peg knew lasting love, the first fifty-three years of marriage to Fred Christopher, and another ten years of romance and marriage with Donald Fell, both who are waiting in heaven for her with open arms. Yes, she did have a thing for those military men.
Peg had been born at home in Drayton Plains, MI on September 22, 1925, and was the oldest of eight children. Her baby brother, Frank Blue and sister, Ruth Chase will miss her dearly. She also leaves two daughters, Linda (David) May and Sharon (Jack) Unger, here on earth to continue living the adventure. Her other daughter, Patricia, will greet her on the other side and surely be drafted into helping with her new heavenly volunteer roles. Lucky her!
Since Peg is no longer able to volunteer here on earth and make her regular charitable donations, she would love for others to make donations in her memory. You could make a donation to Baycliff Health Camp online at baycliff.org, or to the Ionia Ministerial Association directly through Adam Rewa at the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 434 High St, Ionia, MI. 48846. As Peg departed unexpectedly during a deep freeze and blizzardgeddon, a celebration of life service will be held at Lehman Funeral Home when the weather is much warmer. Advance notice will be published when the date is determined. Please be advised, we will reveal her secret holiday cheese ball recipe at the service. If you’d like to share a story or photographs, please visit her obituary memory wall at lehmanfuneralhomes.com.
Visitation will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at the Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich Street, Ionia, Michigan. A Memorial service officiated by Pastor Nancy Pattera will be held at 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Ionia, Michigan.

BALD CYPRESS TREE? In Saranac? Yes. Is it a famous tree? Depends on who you ask. Bald cypress trees are not native to Michigan but are more often associated with south-eastern North America. In Michigan, luckily, they are considered non-invasive. You will find them growing along streams and rivers or in swampy areas. It is a deciduous conifer with short, pale green, flattened needles that, come fall, will turn a drab gold or deep maroon. It is called “bald” because it sheds its needles – as implied by its classification as a “deciduous” cone-bearing tree. They can grow to heights of 50 to 75 feet, with circumferences sometimes measuring over 10 feet. In 2022, a potential winner of the ReLeaf Michigan’s “Big Tree Hunt” was reported in neighboring Kent County. It was called a “giant” bald cypress tree, measuring 163 inches (13.6 feet) around. How does our Saranac bald cypress tree compare?
Our Saranac tree was last reported as having about a 4-foot diameter, meaning it would be about 12.6 feet in circumference…but that was over 20 years ago. Its age is estimated at over 100 years old, and is thought to stand over 50
feet tall. They are known for being slow growing, long-lived trees that regularly reach up to 600 years in age, if not longer in their native habitat. (In 2018, the Black River region of North Carolina documented a bald cypress at 2,624 years old.)
At the May 20th, General Membership meeting, members of the Boston-Saranac Historical Society provided some anecdotal information about our Saranac bald cypress tree. It was once featured on a WoodTV 8 segment of “On The Michigan Road with Dick Evans.” (For 20 years, 1971-1991, Dick Evans filed TV reports from all over the state, covering everything from county fairs, to people with offbeat hobbies and collections, as well as highlighting some of the more beautiful, natural locations in Michigan.)
Our tree had many of its own staunch defenders, but maybe the most memorable was Escellie Grace (nee Henry) Scheid-Frost (1899-1993), who back in 1986 threatened the construction workers with bodily harm if she found any damage or marks made on its trunk or limbs during the rebuilding of the Division Street bridge. Large cranes and earth moving equipment was
used near the beloved tree on the banks of the Lake Creek, on the southwest side of the bridge. (Escellie Scheid-Frost was the wife of Earl F. Scheid, for whom “Scheid Park” on the east end of Main Street was named. When Earl returned from serving in the Infantry overseas in World War I, he and his new wife, Escellie, built their home on Lake Creek across from the Scheid Machine Shop. The tree was most likely already there.)
So, is our Saranac bald cypress tree unique? Most likely not the case. Is it special? I would say so. Is it famous? Well, it has been on TV; it has been mentioned in at least a couple of hard bound books of local Saranac history; and it has had more than a few of its own protectors down through the decades. I would say that it is famous, wouldn’t you? The cost of everyday items continues to stretch many people’s budgets, even as financial experts note that
inflation is cooling off. When individuals feel a pinch in their wallets, non-essentials, such as vacations, often are on
the chopping block. But they may not have to be.

After remaining below 3 percent for a long time, the U.S. Consumer Price Index began to rise in 2021, ultimately reaching 9.1 percent in June 2022 (it has since fallen to more manageable levels, hitting 3.5 percent as of March 2024), according to Forbes. Although inflation may be “deflating,” typically once the costs of goods and services rise, they are more likely to remain that way. It still may be a few years before consumers grow accustomed to these prices.
Higher prices are exacerbated by the fact that the cost of living is still outpacing what people are bringing home. A 2023 survey from Bankrate revealed that, of the workers surveyed whose wages rose, only 33 percent said their income kept up with or exceeded increases in household expenses due to inflation.
Families who are watching their pennies but still want to vacation this year can rest assured there are ways to travel without breaking the bank.
Visit a national park
National Parks are located throughout the country and around the world. The U.S. National Park Service says that entry to many of these parks is free, and those that are not free charge much lower entrance fees than typical family attractions like theme parks.
Be a visitor in your own city (or one nearby)
Who says you have to travel far to have a good time? Enjoy the sights closer to home that you may never have experienced. Some day trips to attractions within driving distance can cut costs when a family is traveling together.
Split a rental home cost
Rental sites like Airbnb and VRBO give you plenty of options when traveling. It may be more cost-effective to rent a large home at a particular destination with several bedrooms or sleeping areas and take a vacation with extended family or friends to divide up the costs.
Buy or rent an RV
The RV lifestyle has grown by leaps and bounds. While always a popular way to see the country, RVing interest exploded during the pandemic, when people wanted safer options for getting away. An RV is essentially a hotel on wheels, so the opportunities for affordable vacations are innumerable once the initial RV investment is made. Plus, people who purchased RVs at the height of COVID-19 may be looking to unload their relatively brand-new vehicles at discounted costs.
