100 Years Ago This Month: Historical events from June 1923

The month of June has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in June 1923.

• The Polo Grounds in New York City hosts a boxing match between Frenchman Eugène Criqui and Johnny Kilbane on June 2. Among those in attendance to see Criqui knock out Kilbane in the sixth round was New York Yankees slugger Babe Ruth, who arrived after a game at Yankee Stadium earlier in the day.

• On June 4, 16 men begin what becomes a 2,000-mile voyage in a single lifeboat after they are forced to abandon the British cargo ship Trevessa as it begins to founder in the Indian Ocean.

• The Soviet Army defeats what is left of the White Army near Okhotsk on June 6, ending what proves to be the last major battle of the Russian Civil War.

• On June 8, a bill is passed in the British House of Commons granting women the right to divorce their husbands on the grounds of infidelity without having to prove cruelty or desertion.

• Bulgarian Prime Minister Aleksandar Stamboliyski is toppled in a bloodless coup orchestrated by a private organization of reserve officers on June 9. Though Stamboliyski survived the coup long enough to flee to his home village of Slavovitsa, he is ultimately killed on June 14 by members of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization, a group that had attempted to assassinate him four months earlier.

• Legendary actor Lon Chaney gets the girl in “The Shock,” an American silent film released on

June 10. Though Chaney often played characters who did not get the girl, “The Shock” ends with Chaney’s character, gangster Wilse Dilling, beginning a new life with Gertrude, whose freedom is assured thanks to a timely earthquake.

• On June 12, magician Horace Goldin is granted a patent for the popular illusion of sawing a woman in half.

• Lou Gehrig makes his debut for the New York Yankees on June 15. Gehrig replaces first baseman Wally Pipp in the ninth inning, though this was not the most notable time Gehrig replaced Pipp. That would occur nearly two years later on June 2, 1925, when Gehrig started at first base and took over for the slumping Pipp. Though the moment Gehrig replaced Pipp in the starting lineup is often remembered as the start of Gehrig’s consecutive games streak that would ultimately last nearly 14 years, the streak actually began a day earlier when the man eventually nicknamed “The Iron Horse” pinch hit for Pee-Wee Wanninger in the eighth inning.

• Scores of people cross the border from Northern Ireland into the neighboring Irish Free State on June 17 as a ban on Sunday alcohol sales goes into effect in the former locale.

• The popular newspaper comic strip “Moon Mullins” debuts on June 19. The strip ran until June 2, 1991.

• United States President Warren G. Harding departs Washington, D.C., on June 20 to begin a cross-country speaking tour. President Harding would never return to the nation’s capital, dying unexpectedly on August 2.

• Turkey hosts the first general elections in the nation’s history on June 28. TF236065

Reps. Johnsen, Fox craft legislation aimed at education reform

Reps. Gina Johnsen and Joseph Fox each introduced bills this week that aim to restore educational sanity to public school curriculum.

House Bills 4284 (Johnsen) and 4672 (Fox) would together require public schools to give proper, fact-based instruction on critical areas of American history – eras that defined our country and shaped its destiny.

These bills come amidst a tide of historical revisionism that has crept into our public schools’ curricula, according to the representatives.

“Narratives such as the 1619 Project categorically shift the focus of instruction about the colonial era away from exploring how the early colonists cultivated societies built on Judeo-Christian ethics and institutions built on democratic ideals,” said Fox, of Fremont. “Instead, these projects and philosophies emphasize that America has somehow been a society built on perpetuating slavery and dismiss the former emphasis on the expansion of freedoms in our constitutional republic.”

At the expense of historical facts, such narratives craft an overly pessimistic portrayal of American History in order to produce a negative attitude among modern Americans about their past, according to Fox. Worse yet, such stories shun patriotism and adopt a posture of indifference or outright hostility at the concept of love of country.

Jointly, these bills strike back against such revisionism and instead advocate for a return to objectivity in our public schools.

“My measure would ensure that history classes give instruction on a wide range of topics if they aren’t already incorporated into the curriculum: all major wars in which the US has engaged, as well as the documents foundational to the country’s political history,” said Johnsen, of Lake Odessa.

Fox’s HB 4672 would require history classes to teach how the operation of the early colonial communities was intimately tied to Christianity, from the reason the colonists immigrated to the construction of their societies based on Christian beliefs and ethics.

“The present state of our nation can be traced back to its conception, when an independent, free nation was simply an idea in the minds of immigrants,” Fox said. “This is an accurate portrayal of American History. These bills continue that enthusiasm by reviewing many of the major identity-shaping wars America has taken part in during the past two hundred and fifty years.”

“These two bills seek to safeguard the truth and restore parental trust in our public school system,” Johnsen said. “School must be a place of instruction and intellectual cultivation, rather than a place of indoctrination following only the latest trend.”

NEWS FROM THE DEPOT

Boston-Saranac Historical Society

UNCLE BERT WAS 94 YEARS

YOUNG when his nephew, Doug, and Doug’s wife, Marlene, and one of their sons, Brent, visited him at his Belmont, MI home in 2013. During that visit, Uncle Bert shared stories of how he and his brother Lyle (Doug’s father) helped their father Archie, the “Saranac Public School” janitor, before class by firing up some ten wood stoves that heated all three floors of the original school. After school? They had

to fill all the wood boxes. This changed when in the 1930’s, the new(er) “big old school” was built with coal burning furnaces – no more wood boxes – but they had other duties such as cleaning gutters. There was always something else to help with. Families working together was not just “done” on the farm but in most areas of day-to-day life. There was no need for “Take your son/daughter to work” days, they were already there

helping wherever and whenever possible.

As the visit continued, Uncle Bert talked about how both the first and the second school building currently sit on the same site of Vosper between Mill and Church streets. No, that is not a misstatement – BOTH schools.

(HINT: I think of it as an early example of repurposing building material.)

The Saranac school system began with a one room school – a room in the back of a drug store. Once there were enough children enrolled, a school house was built at the corner of Main and Fuller. Then followed by another, larger school at the corner of Vosper and Mill. This was completed in 1873. As population grew the school expanded, and the first graduating class of ten grades had their commencement in 1887. By 1896, the eleventh grade was added and in 1904, the twelfth. For years, the large brick building was thought to be of an adequate size until it was not.

This school was torn down, and according to Uncle Bert, a very large portion of it was saved

for use within the NEW bigger school: old salvaged brick and wood used within the new outer face. Rumor has it that in the attic you can still see some of the old school’s wooden timbers. Construction, started in 1929, was finished in time for the graduating class of 1931. Not only did it house all twelve grades but now included kindergarten. Slowly, as the number of children enrolled grew, classes were moved into newer school buildings. By 1964, the last twelve grade class graduated and in the 1980’s, only grades five through seven were held in the old “Saranac Public School” (yes, “technically” both of them) before permanently closing.

NOTE: The Saranac High School 1946 yearbook’s (The Chieftain) dedication reads: “To Archie Denny, our janitor, in appreciation of faithfulness and consideration of us kids, we dedicate this annual.”

Memorable ways to celebrate Dad this Father’s Day

celebrations tend to involve more careful planning, and the following are some ways to make this year’s day for dads one to remember.

Dads do a lot for their families, and Father’s Day is the perfect time to acknowledge those efforts. The days when dads would receive a colorful necktie for Father’s Day are largely (and, for fathers, thankfully) a relic of the past. Modern Father’s Day

• Take Dad on a tour through his own history. The popularity of genealogy has skyrocketed over the last decade-plus, as various firms have made it easier than ever for individuals to trace their family histories. If Dad counts himself among the millions across the globe interested in their family histories, moms and kids can

High School diploma or GED required. Ionia County is an equal opportunity employer.

work together to create a virtual tour through that history. Present the history as a printed book or as a video, sharing interesting things you learned about Dad’s ancestors but also highlighting key moments in his life. This presentation can be accompanied by a subscription to a genealogy service and a tour of some of Dad’s childhood haunts before the family enjoys brunch or dinner in the neighborhood where Dad grew up.

• Take to the great outdoors. Father’s Day is celebrated in midJune, making the day a perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors (weather permitting). Plan a day around Dad’s favorite outdoor activity. If Dad is an avid fisherman, book a family outing on a charter boat so Dad can focus on catching fish and not navigating. If Dad loves being in natural settings, camp out the night before Father’s Day so he can wake up to the sound of birds chirping in the crisp morning air. If Dad has a favorite baseball team, take him out to the ballgame so he can soak up some Father’s Day sun.

• Book a private chef. If Dad has a fascination with food, perhaps nothing can make Father’s Day more memorable than a delicious meal served by a private chef. Private chefs will do all the work, giving moms and kids more time to spend with Dad throughout the day, and then the whole family can enjoy a special meal made by someone whose specialty is crafting delicious dinners. Offerings vary, but many private chefs handle all the cooking and cleaning. Identify Dad’s favorite dish and then look for a chef who specializes in that type of cuisine.

• Appeal to Dad’s inner adventur-

er. Some Dads may just want to relax on Father’s Day, while others may prefer a more adventurous celebration. If Dad falls into the latter group, book a fun and adventurous activity the whole family can enjoy together. A kayaking trip, a skydiving session, a round of paintball, or even tickets to a rock concert on Father’s Day weekend can connect Dad with his inner adventurer.

There’s no shortage of ways for families to make this Father’s Day one Dad won’t soon forget.
