† CARTER Paula Jo (Desgranges) Carter, 85, passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2023 with her family by her side. Paula was born on December 9th, 1937 to Paul and Frieda (Makley) Desgranges. She attended Woodland Schools before moving to Lake Odessa. After graduating from Lake Odessa High School in 1955 she earned a business degree from Davenport College. Paula married the love of her life, Merval Carter on October 19, 1956. Together they raised four children on the family farm. In 1971 Paula began her career for Lakewood Public Schools and retired as bookkeeper after 28 years of service. She was a member of the Woodland Women’s Club for several years where she made many friends and was a member of the Lakewood United Methodist Church.
Paula enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and friends. You never left her home feeling hungry. Anyone who visited Paula knew the delicious homemade cookies would be waiting to enjoy with great conversation. Bags and bags of cookies traveled out of her front door to be enjoyed later.
Paula was blessed to have a large family who loved spending time with her as much as she loved having the time with them. She cherished her grandkids dearly and they were a very important part of her life. The holidays were always a grand occasion with her 60 plus family members all gathering in her home, always lots of good food, laughter, and so many memories made.
She will be lovingly remembered and missed by: her four children Marty (Karrie) Carter, Kelly (Pam) Carter, Kim (Brian) VanNeste, and Gina (Brent Hilley) Meyers, thirteen grandchildren; Josh (Kallie), Travis (Jill), Brady (Melissa), Jennie (Lucas), Erica, Emilie, Eric (Shawna), Chris (Jamie), Kacie Jo (Shaun), Paul (Gabrielle), Kellie (Jeremy), Matt (Justina), Rachel (Ryan), 29 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, sister Ruthie Benjamin, brother in law Bernie Wilfong along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Paula was preceded in death by her husband Merv, parents Paul and Frieda Desgranges, sister Diana Wilfong, brother in law Jerry Benjamin and daughter in law Brenda Carter.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at Koops Funeral Chapel from 5pm until 8pm. Funeral services will be held at the Lakewood Church on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at 11am. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband Merv in Lakeside Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Woodland Women’s Club Scholarship Fund.

and s’mores, right in your backyard. But having a wood-burning firepit requires having a dedicated place to store firewood.
“A firewood rack is not only important for an organized yard, it protects your fuel source from moisture, making for less smoke and more efficient burning. While it might seem like a complicated build, it can be a simple, easy and quick weekend DIY project that will greatly improve your backyard experience,” says Jamie Briggs, director of marketing at Exmark, a leading manufacturer of lawn care equipment.
That’s the idea behind this “Done-In-A-Weekend Project” from Exmark:
cinder blocks
Small Rack
• (2) 10-foot 2x4s (pressure treated)
• (2) standard cinder blocks
BUILD STEPS
1. Measure, mark, and cut your 2x4s into 5-foot pieces.
2. For the smaller rack, lay the two cinderblocks side by side, holes up. For the larger rack, place two of the cinderblocks at either end of the length of the landscape timber, holes up. Place the third cinderblock in the middle of the other two to work as support.
3. For the larger rack, lay the two lawn timber planks across the cinderblocks and then check to ensure they’re level.
4. For the smaller rack, turn the 2x4s so the wide sides are facing inwards. For the larger rack, place the cut 2×4 pieces into the holes of the cinderblocks, small sides facing inwards.
5. To ensure the security of your build, resituate the two lawn timbers so they’re as tightly placed against the 2×4 planks as possible.
6. Load up your wood!
To view the full video tutorial, visit Exmark’s Backyard Life site at https://backyard.exmark. com, a multimedia destination that provides homeowners with everything from grilling tips and design projects to gardening and lawn care advice.
“Our firewood rack gives you plenty of storage so you can keep your bonfire blazing for an entire party. It’s also one of the simplest builds we’ve ever done, and you’ll be able to make quick work of it over your weekend downtime,” says Briggs.

(StatePoint) During allergy season, having a safe haven from the triggers that make you sneeze and wheeze is essential. While you can’t completely control your surroundings in the great outdoors, you can take steps at home to reduce allergens and feel your best.
• Fresh, cool air: The right air conditioning unit can help you breathe better indoors. For example, the Midea U delivers a cold airflow that can be felt up to 20 feet away and features full DC inverter technology to
rapidly cool a room. Its removable and washable air filter is easily cleaned to help reduce dust and pet allergens in the air. And thanks to its U-shaped design, you can easily open and close your windows even when the unit is installed, giving you more control of your indoor air quality and environment. Bonus -- it’s compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant and is Energy Star-certified and ultra-quiet.
• Smart steps: When you get home from spending time outdoors, take off outer layers that
PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that on June 12, 2023 at 3:30pm at 2120 N. State Rd., Ionia, Michigan, the Board of Education of North LeValley School will hold a public hearing to consider the district’s proposed budget.
The board may not adopt its proposed 2023-2024 budget until after the public hearing. A copy of the proposed budget is available for public inspection prior to the meeting.

have made contact with pollen, such as jackets and shoes. Having a mud room or other area to remove and store these items, preferably attached to or close to your laundry room, will help you avoid tracking and spreading allergens throughout your home.
• Screened doors and windows: Even if you suffer from allergies, you may enjoy throwing open your windows on a nice day for a cross breeze. Just be sure all the screens on your windows and doors are in good condition and free of tears and holes. Special pollen-blocking screens are easy to install and go a step further than standard insect screens to keep out smaller, particulate matter, including pollen, dust and other small irritants and allergens.
• Whole-home cleaning: Regular vacuuming will make a world of difference in the way you feel. For maximum relief, use a vacuum with complete seal HEPA filtration. This means it’s EPA-certified to do the job, based on the standard test method, which indicates it can trap 99.9% of dust, dander and allergen particles 0.3 microns and larger. The Innova Upright Vacuum, for example, targets these particles and facilitates whole-home cleaning. Thanks to its detachable accessories and components, and LED user interface, you can optimize your cleaning for every surface, including hard floor, carpet and upholstery, curtains, the space under furniture and stairs. And if you’re a pet parent, you can expect a deeper, more efficient clean and longer operation due to its dual-action brush roll that
actively prevents pet hair tangles and clogs from forming while concentrating air flow. It also has a motorized anti-tangle pet tool that effectively removes hair and debris from stairs and upholstery.
There is no need to suffer in your own home this season. With some smart strategies and the right tools, you can keep allergens at bay indoors.
