Did you know?

Data from the ASPCA® indicates that roughly 6.3 million companion animals enter animal shelters in the United States each year. A nearly equal number of dogs (3.1 million) and cats (3.2 million) make up that population, and roughly two-thirds of those shelter animals are eventually adopted each year. But the land-

scape for shelter animals is fluid, and the first half of 2023 was proof of that. According to the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement, dog intakes at animal shelters had increased by 4 percent during the first two quarters of 2023 compared to the same period the year prior. During that same time, cat intakes had declined by roughly 1 percent. One possible reason for the higher intake of dogs is related to how prospective dog owners begin their search. A recent analysis of Google Trends found that the search term “buy a dog” is now as common as the term “adopt a dog.” By choosing to adopt rather than buy a dog, prospective dog owners could save a dog’s life and help often overburdened local adoption shelters looking to ensure dogs in their care end up in safe and happy homes.

Darwin met his wife Sharon in 1978 and later married August 30, 1980. Darwin and Sharon have three beautiful children, Eric (Wife-Danielle, children- Grayson, Bennett, Oliver and Nathaniel), Nicholas Bassett (wife- Anne, children- Theadore and Evelyn) and Jessica Lindner (HusbandDennis, children - Joseph, Noa Mae, and child expected Oct ‘24).

† HOLLIDAY David (Dave) Earl Holliday, sadly left us on April 2, 2024.

Dave was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on August 9, 1944 to the late Ruth (Osborn) and Earl Holliday. He graduated from Arthur Hill High School with the class of 1962.

Dave played the french horn in the Saginaw Youth Symphony, the Saginaw Eddy Band, as well as the Arthur Hill High School Band & Orchestra. He was very involved with Ames Methodist Church of Saginaw during his growing up years. Dave’s first job was delivering the Saginaw News for six years.

In 1962, he joined the U.S. Army. After basic training, he attended the Navy’s Conservatory of Music in Washington, D.C. He was then attached to the 5th U.S. Army Band in Chicago, Ill, and later the 8th Infantry Headquarter Band in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. While in Bad Kreuznach, he played in the Bad Kreuznach Symphony Orchestra. After discharge from the Army, he attended Delta College and Eastern Michigan University where he played in the Band & Orchestra.

Dave married Cynthia Ann Grice on February 5, 1966. Together they have 4 children. Todd, Tammy, John and Julie. David’s great pride was his family. Dave and Cindy raised their family in Ionia, Michigan. Here they owned Custom Office Systems, C & D Realty, as well as many other small businesses in the area for over 40 years.

Dave attended the First Baptist Church of Ionia for 35 years. Dave was the worship leader, moderator, sang in the church choir and taught the Tuxis Senior Class for many years. The church family was a huge part of his life. Most recently, Dave attended Central Wesleyan Church in Holland, MI. While there, Dave and Cindy lead the 9:00 Continued Class together. Music made his soul soar. He would often be seen standing in the middle of the living room, with the stereo volume on high, directing whatever piece of praise music that he was listening to at that moment.

Raising the family, they enjoyed camping, the cottage in Lake City, MI, and boating in Saugatuck, MI. Being on the water was a great pleasure of his. Dave’s love for water began when he was growing up with a cottage in Lake City, but continued on when he had a cottage of his own. This was followed by his years of boat life on the Chris Craft and Regal in Saugatuck. MI both at Deep Harbor Marina and Singapore Yacht Club. This led him to author his own book titled “The Sinking of the Holliday’s Inn”. Dave and Cindy loved to travel and have enjoyed many trips around the world.

Dave’s faith and his love for Jesus was always a guiding force in his life and never waivered. Dave’s love for his family never diminished. This was demonstrated by each word of praise, encouragement, kiss to the forehead, or just the way his eyes lit up when you entered the room. He always lifted up those in his company. God gave Dave 79 years of what Dave often referred to as “A PERFECT LIFE.” He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Earl Holliday and his grandson Jonathon Todd Holliday. He is survived by his wife Cynthia Holliday and his four children Todd (Laura) Holliday, Tammy (Jason) Szubielak, John (Renee) Holliday, Julie (Joe) Yuhas. His brother Curtis (Rosemary) Holliday and a cousin whom he considered to be a sister, Jacquie Dawkins. Saranac FFA Awarded $50,000 Grant to Expand Career & Technical Education Agricultural Education Opportunities

Saranac Future Farmers of America (FFA) is excited to announce the reception of a $50,000 grant aimed at enriching agricultural education in the community. This funding will support the construction of a new greenhouse, providing students with more hands-on learning opportunities crucial for their future in agriculture. Saranac offers four state-approved Agriculture Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses annually: Plant Science, Animal Science, Food Science 1, and Food Science 2.

This grant, obtained through the combined efforts of Saranac's agricultural instructors Susann Young and Tracy Dahms, Saranac Principal Josh Leader, and Ionia County ISD Associate Superintendent of CTE Ted W. Paton, highlights Saranac's dedication to enhancing its CTE program in agriculture.

The team worked diligently to obtain the grant from available CTE funds dedicated to agricultural programs, recognizing the significance of investing in the next generation of agricultural leaders.

"We deeply appreciate the support and investment in our agricultural education initiatives," stated Paton, who oversees CTE programs not only at Ionia County Career Center but also in local districts: Belding and Saranac.

"This grant will allow the Saranac CTE Ag program to expand our educational offerings, empowering students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the agricultural industry."

"The new greenhouse signifies more than just a physical structure; it represents our dedication to nurturing the next generation of agricultural leaders," commented Josh Leader, a key advocate for agricultural education in Saranac. "Through hands-on

experiences and innovative learning opportunities, we aim to empower students to make meaningful contributions to the agricultural community. Our AgriScience teachers work extremely hard to provide our kids with amazing opportunities; these programs are wonderful points of pride for our school and community."

Paton expresses excitement for the future of Career and Technical Education and the opportunities across Ionia County. To keep up to

date with Career & Technical Education happenings across Ionia County please join the mailing list for the

NEWS FROM THE DEPOT

Boston-Saranac Historical Society

WHEN I FIRST JOINED the Boston-Saranac Historical Society, and mentioned my volunteering to other residents, I was often questioned as to, “What does the Depot (museum) do?” Sounds like an easy enough question but when looking at the short answer (preserving the Boston-Saranac area history), it oftentimes fell flat.

Local museums can provide a sense of community and place, offering a great way to learn about the history of a particular area or time. In some cases, parallels between BEFORE TIMES and RECENT TIMES can be drawn. For example, the necessity of rationing and ration cards.

During World War 2 (WW2) on August 28, 1941 -- President Roosevelt’s Executive Order 8875 created the Office of Price Administration (OPA). The OPA’s main responsibility was to place a ceiling on prices of most goods, and to limit consumption by rationing. Supplies such as gasoline, butter, sugar, and canned milk were rationed because they needed to be diverted to the war effort. War also disrupted trade, limiting the availability of some goods, such as rubber.

Americans received their first ration cards in May 1942. The first card, War Ration Card Number One, became known as the “Sugar Book,” for one of the commodities Americans could purchase with their ration card. Other ration cards developed as the war progressed. The OPA rationed automobiles, tires, gasoline, fuel oil, coal, firewood, nylon, silk, and shoes. Americans used their ration cards and stamps to take their fair share of household staples including meat, dairy, coffee, dried fruits, jams, jellies, lard,

WHY BUY LOCAL? Lower Taxes! Studies show that locally owned businesses put less demand on our roads, sewers, and safety services. They generate more tax revenue per sales dollar. A larger percentage of locally owned businesses will help keep your taxes lower.

Sample of front and back of O.P.A. “War Ration Book(s)” (f & b), stamps and tokens/coins. O.P.A. coins (commonly called OPAs) were used by retailers to give change back for food bought with ration stamps. Blue tokens were used for processed foods; red tokens for meats and fats.

shortening, and oils.

Now, turning to more recent times – if these cards were still in use - toilet paper might be one of the items I would have liked to see added to the list of rationed staples.

When the history of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic is written, the vanishing of toilet paper might rank just a footnote but it was not all that long ago that just about every household was in a daily speculation as to how much toilet paper will be needed, and where were you to find it. Sure, distribution centers were often blamed by the local groceries who were known to say, “more is on its way.” A lot of us thought it more likely it was because people were buying too much toilet paper, more than their “needs” required – more than their share. As written on the back of one such WW2 ration book, “This book is your government’s assurance of your right to buy your fair share of certain goods...”

RENTALS - Fishing & boating, pontoon rental available. Lots of nature & quiet. Call 616-644-9414, Ron. Google Ron’s quality waterfront cottages.

Sounds fair to me, especially since I do remember having to walk by the empty paper product aisles and “thinking” of possible alternatives should I not find any when needed. Fun times, and something that studying, and learning, from history might have reduced some of the anxiety associated with an everyday household item such as toilet paper.

Your Boston-Saranac Historical Society will be resuming its regular schedule of “Open Houses” starting with this year’s Tri-River Museums “Spring into the Past” tour, Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5, 2024 (11am to 4pm). Healthy exposure to the sun

Spring and summer are times of the year when the great outdoor beckons more strongly than it does in fall and winter. Temperate climates and abundant sunshine encourage people to leave their homes and bask in the warm rays of the sun. Spending time outdoors is good for mental health and it’s a natural way for people to get adequate vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin. The National Institutes of Health say exposure to sunshine for five to 30 minutes a day, most days a week is optimal to make vitamin D. A large percentage of the population is deficient in vitamin D. The NIH says there are many studies correlating vitamin D insufficiency with increased risk of numerous chronic conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, myocardial infarctions, and brittle bones. However, sun exposure to make vitamin D needs

to occur without sunscreen for maximum impact. That begs the question of just how safe it may be to spend time outdoors without sun protection, and what are the risks of doing so? Also, do the risks of vitamin D deficiency outrank those involving sun exposure and cancer causation? It’s a conundrum, to be sure. The good news is that most people can safely enjoy the sun and obtain vitamin D. Here are some tips and safety precautions.

• Keep in mind that the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. Therefore, if you must spend time in the sun, do so outside of this time period.

• Promptly apply sunscreen. After a short period of unprotected sunshine of no more than 30 minutes, put on sunblock right away. Also, reapply as indicated on the packaging depending on activity. Harvard Health says that sunscreen cannot block all UV rays, and even usage of sunblock will not staunch all vitamin D production.

• The National Cancer Institute suggests using an SPF of at least 15, but some doctors

recommend SPF 30.

• Ultraviolet radiation is the number one cause of skin cancer. Utilize wide-brimmed hats, sunscreen and protective clothing to prevent cumulative sun exposure, which can lead to basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers.

• Keep in mind that episodes of severe sunburns, usually before age 18, can raise the risk of developing melanoma. Children should be just as mindful of sun exposure as adults.

• It is challenging to define

what “too much sun” actually is, says the European Code Against Cancer. Strength of the sun (UV index), skin type and the strength of sunscreen all merit consideration A person with very fair skin exposed to an ultraviolet index of 6, which is easily reached at noon in summer, can suffer sunburn in as little as 10 to 15 minutes. It’s a fine line to balance healthy sun exposure to obtain vitamin D and avoiding sun damage to the skin. But it’s best that people walk that tightrope with sun safety in mind. TF245946

Age-appropriate tasks for kids when caring for pets

Parents recognize the strong bonds children form with their pets. The unconditional love companion animals offer can be just what kids need at the end of a school day, and it’s hard for people of any age to resist cuddle time with a cat or a game of fetch with Fido.

Pets also can provide a way to foster growth in youngsters. According to Michigan State University Extension, pet ownership can teach kids responsibility and help them to develop important life skills like trust and compassion. But it’s important that parents avoid assigning too much pet-related responsibilities to children, particularly young kids. For instance, the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry notes that children age four and younger do not have the maturity to control their aggressive and angry impulses. As a result, kids age four and younger should be monitored at all times when they are in the company of pets.

As children grow older, they can be assigned additional and more significant responsibilities related to caring for pets. Though parents are urged to give strong consideration to their children’s maturity levels before assigning chores related to caring for pets, the following breakdown can serve as a guide for moms and dads who want to involve their youngsters in caring for the family pet.

KIDS

ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance notes that it’s best to assign simple tasks as kids start to pitch in with pet care. Kids can be assigned water bowl duty after being shown how to refill the water bowl. Training is often necessary when welcoming a new pet into the home, and kids can sit in on training sessions and ultimately participate. This not only teaches kids how to interact with pets, but also acclimates animals like dogs to listening and

following commands from kids.

When teaching kids to care for pets, encourage a gentle approach. Discourage kids from playing rough with pets, instead noting the importance of gentle petting and delivering voice commands without yelling.

ADOLESCENTS

Adolescents and, depending on their maturity levels, pre-adolescents can be given more significant pet care responsibilities. Modern middle schoolers and high school students are busier than ever, so parents may want to avoid overloading such youngsters with too much pet-related responsibilities. However, ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance notes adolescents can take dogs for after-school walks and even participate in less enjoyable tasks, such as cleaning up messes in the yard and emptying the litter box. These responsibilities can be shared among all members of the household so kids don’t feel as though they’ve been given the short (and stinky) end of the responsibility stick. Adolescents also can be given responsibilities like feeding pets in the morning or evening, taking them

outside to relieve themselves and cleaning up pet play areas, including vacuuming such spaces. A daily task like cleaning a pet’s dishes is another pet-related responsibility that pre-adolescents and adolescents can handle.

Parents decide how much pet-related responsibilities their children can handle. But involving kids in caring for pets can help youngsters grow and serve as a great way to teach them important life lessons.

eat pizza, and 33 million Americans have said they’d make it their last meal if they had a choice. Technomic’s 2020 Canadian Pizza Consumer Trend Report offered that 81 percent of consumers eat pizza at least once a month.

Pizza certainly tops the lists of comfort foods people turn to when they want tasty meals or snacks. Let’s slice into a few more facts about pizza.

• Pizza commands plenty of dates on holiday events calendars. October is National Pizza Month, September 5 marks National Cheese Pizza Day, February 9 is National Pizza Day, April 5 is National Deep Dish Pizza Day, September 10 is National Pepperoni Pizza Day, and the third Friday in May is National Pizza Party Day. There are others as well, helping people to enjoy pizza many days during the year.

• Pizza hails from Italy. Antica Pizzeria is the very first known pizzeria in Italy. It opened in 1738.

• The pizza industry brings in roughly $30 billion a year.

• Cheese pizza is a favorite of many. However, pepperoni is the most popular topping in the United States and Canada.

• The busiest day for ordering pizza is Super Bowl Sunday. This fast food is easily enjoyed while watching the game.

• “Canadian pizza” contains sauce, mozzarella cheese, bacon, pepperoni, and mushrooms.

• According to the data company ScrapeHero, Hunts Brothers Pizza is the largest pizza chain in the United States, with 9,240 locations as of 2023.

• Boston Pizza, 241 Pizza and Freshslice Pizza are some popular Canadian pizza chains.

Now that we’ve consumed some pizza facts, it’s time to consume the pizza itself. Enjoy this recipe for “Classic Cheese Pizza” courtesy of The Pioneer Woman and Leah Perez.

CLASSIC CHEESE PIZZA

Yields 6 to 8 servings

1¼ oz packet active dry yeast

2 tsp granulated sugar

1½ cup warm water (90 to 100 F)

4 cups all-purpose flour

2 tsp olive oil, divided, plus more for brushing 2¼ tsp kosher salt

¼ cup grated parmesan cheese, divided

1 cup pizza sauce, divided

3 cups shredded low-moisture mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup cubed fresh mozzarella cheese, divided Fresh basil to serve

1. Sprinkle the yeast and sugar over the warm water in the bowl of a stand mixer. Whisk to combine and then let sit until bubbles have formed on the top, about 5 minutes. Add the flour, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and salt, and mix with the dough hook on low speed until the dough comes together, about 2 minutes. Scrape the bottoms and sides of the bowl. Increase the speed to medium-low until everything is well incorporated and the dough is sticky, 2 to 3 minutes more.

2. Drizzle the top of the dough and down the sides of the bowl with the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Use a rubber spatula to flip the dough to coat in the oil. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rise until doubled, about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

3. About 1 hour before you’re ready to make the pizza, place a pizza stone, steel, or an upside-down baking sheet on the upper third rack of the oven. Preheat the oven to 500 F.

4. On a lightly floured work surface, cut the dough in half and form into tight rounds. To form a nice round, flatten the dough onto the circle. Flip it over and gently pull the round against the counter to form a taut ball. Place the rounds on a lightly floured baking sheet with enough space for them to rise and expand, about an hour.

5. Place a 14-inch piece of heavy-duty foil on top of an upside-down half-sheet pan. Lightly brush the foil with oil and dust with flour. While working with one round of dough, cover the other with plastic wrap.

6. On a well-floured surface, press one piece of dough into an 8-inch round with 1-inch outer lip. Carefully lift the dough with your hands, cupping the lip to keep from flattening it. Working quickly, rotate the edge of the dough through your hands in a clockwise motion, allowing gravity to stretch the dough into a round shape. Place the dough back on the flour and stretch it into a 12-inch circle. Transfer to the prepared foil.

7. Sprinkle the surface of the pizza with 2 tablespoons of grated parmesan. Spread 1⁄2 cup pizza sauce over the parmesan, leaving a 1-inch border. Sprinkle the pizza with 11⁄2 cups of low-moisture mozzarella and 1⁄2-cup cubed fresh mozzarella.

8. Using the upside down baking sheet as a pizza peel, transfer the pizza with the foil to the preheated baking stone. Bake until the crust is browned and the cheese is bubbling, 12 to 14 minutes. Transfer pizza from the foil to a cooling rack. Brush the crust with olive oil, sprinkle the surface with basil leaves, and serve hot. Repeat the process for the other dough round. PC239323
