SCANDAL SHEETS – We’ve all seen them, and may have even indulged ourselves in reading the most tantalizing headlines, as we head through the grocery store checkout. Nothing you would think you would find at your local historical society. Right? Turns out that with a little indepth reading you can learn lots more about the early Saranac area settlers than you thought possible, including scandalous activities even by today’s jaded expectations.

In amongst all the donated diaries, photo albums, collected newspaper clippings gathered from residents of the Saranac area, your Boston-Saranac Historical Society does have one (1) booklet self-described as “…a compilation of cases heard in the Michigan appellate courts from the beginning of Statehood in 1837 to 2014, and in which Saranac or the area around Saranac are mentioned.” This 85-page booklet was compiled, and donated, by Saranac resident and longtime BSHS member Wesley P. Hackett, Jr., Attorney at Law. (Thank you, Wes.)

A lot of these Saranac recorded court cases had to do with land, money, inheritances, adultery –nothing new there. Still, I found the contents compelling reading.

As an example, with regards to a 1910 estate case it turned out that the deceased man, William F., had been married in New York state in 1868 and was father to three children. In 1878, he came west – alone. By 1880, he had settled in Saranac and was boarding with a local family. Soon

thereafter, he began courting their 19-year-old daughter.

Remember he is still a married father of three (back east) but that did not stop him from marrying the young woman in 1881, and they commenced to live as husband and wife, in Saranac, for the remainder of his life. They had one daughter in 1891. From the time of his second “marriage” in 1881, to 1900, he had no correspondence with his family in New York. However, in 1900 his son, William (Jr.), arrived in Saranac to confront his father.

Father and (estranged) son went to his Saranac home for dinner, and during a long conference in which William (Sr.) stated that he did not want to be punished for bigamy, and promised to be there when his son needed (financial) help. “Thereafter, and up to the month of his death (November 13, 1904), he paid various small sums to his son.” – Saranac In the Courts. Now if that is not the stuff of a “scandal sheet,” I am not sure what would.

Crafts lead the way for

Mother’s Day gifts

Mother’s Day is a special time for children to show their appreciation for their mothers, grandmothers and the other special women in their lives. Older children typically are capable of designing their own Mother’s Day crafts or even shopping for gifts for Mom, while younger children will likely need some help from an adult.

Youngsters may not be able to take charge of Mother’s Day festivities alone, but they certainly have the energy and enthusiasm to chip in. Handmade craft gifts are a thoughtful way for young kids to show their love for Mom. Here are a few ideas that can occupy even the youngest of hands.

HANDPRINT BUTTERFLY

PHOTO CARD

All that is necessary for this craft is a printed photograph of the child’s face, paper, scissors, glue, and finger paints. The child should dip hands into the paint and make four handprints on paper in some preferred colors. When dry, cut around the perimeter of the handprints. These will serve as the “wings” of the butterfly. Glue the picture of the child’s face in the middle of a piece of paper or card stock. Draw a butterfly body underneath it (or print out a stock image to use). Draw antennae sticking out of the child’s head and attach the handprints around the head and butterfly body to make the wings.

HEARTFELT MASTERPIECE

Children can draw and color all over a large sheet of construction paper or another durable paper. An adult can then use another sheet of paper to make a frame mat of sorts, cutting out a heart shape from the middle. Both pieces of paper are then

trimmed to the dimensions of a photo frame. The artwork is placed first and then the heart matting on top so that the artwork will show through the heart shape. Frame everything together for a lasting memento.

FUZZY FLOWERS

Kids can make Mom a bouquet of flowers that will never wilt. Print a photo of the child’s face and attach it to a piece of circular card stock that is roughly six inches in diameter.

Have the child paint a popsicle stick green, and then attach that to the back of the round card stock. The child then glues small fuzzy pom poms to the card stock surrounding the picture to make a flower. If desired, attach a magnet to the back of the flower so it can be secured to the refrigerator. Crafts are a great gift option for young children looking to give something special to Mom on Mother’s Day.

NATIONAL AUCTIONEERS DAY – Third Saturday in April

Each year on the third Thursday in April, National Auctioneers Day recognizes those who hold auctions and take our bids all year long. According to the National Auctioneers Association, it is estimated nearly a quarter-trillion dollars in goods and services are sold by professional auctioneers every year.

GOING ONCE! GOING TWICE! SOLD!!

A sales method over 2,000 years old, the rhythmic cadence used in The United States is uniquely American.

Thought to have developed during the Civil War, the rapidly punctuated chatter of these auctioneers not only gets the job done but makes it entertaining as well. Elsewhere in the world, auctioneers take a more sedate approach. Both styles get the bids and sell the items on the auction block to the highest bidder.

Auctioneers provide a service to both the buyer and the seller. They must maintain high standards to stay competitive. These knowledgeable business professionals know the products they sell. They recognize quality and a deal when they see it, too. Auctioneers also provide

services in times of great need too. Often a family needs to sell an estate or land to alleviate debt. An auctioneer provides professional guidance during a difficult time. Across the country, a variety of auction platforms take place. Whether auctioneers sell livestock, art, automobiles, or surplus, an auction can be found near you. Left to the imagination, just about anything can be put up for auction.

AUCTIONEER FAQ

Q. Do auctioneers compete against one another?

A. They sure do! The Livestock Marketing Association hosts an annual competition. Another competition is called the Mule Day Auctioneers Championship in Columbia, Tennessee. Livestock auctioneers typically use the rhythmic auction chant found in more rural settings.

Q. Is there such a thing as auctioneer school?

A. Yes. Take the Professional Ringmen’s Institute in Murfreesboro, TN.

Artists ages 6 and older can submit artwork of all types--paintings, drawings, sculptures, photos, and more. The submission period runs through April 24, so now’s the time to put your talents to work and make something to submit.

The artwork will be on display throughout the month of May, and once again, you can come in to vote for your favorites! Stop by

the library to pick up the rules and submission forms, and join us for this year’s Portland Creates.

With a little bit of sewing and a little bit of gluing, you can add this statement piece to your wardrobe. Register anytime, and then check out the instructional video and your bag of supplies on March 30. Ages 15 and up, registration is limited to 15. Don’t miss your chance
