Saranac's Annual Egg Hunt beat the weather
Submitted by C.Talcott
Many kids came to Schied Park on April 1 to Saranac Community Association’s annual egg hunt. Fun times for all. Better Together 4 Saranac joined in the celebration. There were wonderful books for kids to take home. The Easter Bunny came to visit and for photos. He gave out gifts, carrots, and candy. He was definitely a big hit. Children had a chance to win a basket during the egg hunt. They could go to BT4S at the main pavilion to pick up their Easter Basket. Thanks to Herbruck Poultry Farm and Portland Federal Credit Union and community members for the books. Thanks to Day Bible Chapel, Saranac Community Church, Pathway, St. Anthony, Chrouch Communication Inc, Saranac EL Intervention Team, Greenridge Realty, McDonald’s-Ionia, and
Sam Club, and BT4S members for the baskets. Many volunteers helped make the event run smoothly and fun for the kids—
Mindy, Gabe, Addie, Faith, Grace, Jayne, Sue, Dave, Abby, Trinity, Scott, Hannah, Sharon, Monty Jo. We appreciate all the help!
If you would like more information about BT4S or would like to share an Easter photo, please check out the Better Together 4 Saranac on Facebook. Happy Easter!!

private driveways and even city streets at a fraction of the cost of asphalt! Maintenance of asphalt requires periodic sealing and repairs. Chip-seal is very low maintenance. Good traction in wet of snowy weather, the rough surface provides extra grip to feet and tires. Chip-seal is hot tar applied to asphalt then a layer of stone is applied on top. Fills all cracks without the look of crack filler and the stones improve the total look of older asphalt. Not only can chip-seal be applied to the pavement, it can also be applied to gravel or dirt to provide a hard surface to drive on at a fraction of the cost of asphalt. Sparrow easing masking requirements as COVID cases continue to decline
LANSING, MI – Sparrow is revising its requirements for wearing face masks on the heels of the continual decrease in COVID cases, high levels of immunity, and the availability of effective treatments.
Effective immediately, caregivers, patients, and visitors will no longer be required to wear a mask in public areas of our facilities, including hallways,
cafeterias, and most waiting areas, in alignment with Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) standards.
Patients and visitors will be required to wear a mask when visiting patients, seeking medical care for respiratory symptoms and/or COVID, including fever, new cough, or rash, or when someone in their home
has COVID. Masks will continue to be available throughout our facilities for anyone who chooses to wear one.
Sparrow caregivers will also be required to mask up when providing direct patient care or when experiencing respiratory-like symptoms. All caregivers will continue to have the option to wear an N95 if they prefer a higher level of protection.
Sparrow has been a leader in COVID care in Michigan since the pandemic began in March 2020 and is among the first health systems in the state to ease masking requirements.
“The easing of the mask mandate marks a historical milestone,” said Paul Entler, D.O., Sparrow Health System Chief Clinical Officer. “For the past three years, our region has endured much heartache, stress, loss of loved ones, and isolation. I am proud to be part of the Mid-Michigan community and what we stand for with better days ahead. The easing of mask requirements symbolizes recovery.”
For the past three years, Sparrow has been at the forefront in protecting our patients,
visitors, and caregivers from the spread of COVID during the pandemic. Along with a strict visitor policy and masking mandate, in March 2020 Sparrow was one of the first hospitals in Michigan to offer COVID tests to inpatients and has performed more than 915,000 PRC COVID-19 tests. Federal statistics show the number of COVID cases reported daily in the United States has dropped by 92% since the peak of the Omicron surge in January 2022. COVID deaths have also declined by over 80%, while new COVID-19 hospitalizations are down nearly 80%.
Sparrow is proud to be Mid-Michigan’s leader in COVID care and will continue to monitor COVID to protect the health of our community. To learn more, visit Sparrow.org/ COVIDcare.

Rep. Johnsen speaks out against Democrats aiming to hide poor school performance
State Rep. Gina Johnsen today raised concerns about a measure House Democrats are pursuing that will result in less clarity for Michigan parents who care about the quality of their local schools.
Johnsen expressed her opposition to House Bill 4166, which eliminates the A-F school grading system currently in place to measure the education-based achievements of Michigan schools, in a speech on the House floor.
“Using a grading scale to assess a school’s performance is vital to keep the general public informed about said performance at a time when kids are still struggling in school following the pandemic,” Johnsen said during her speech. “This bill, however, removes the tools we
use to keep schools transparent and ensure we are doing right by our kids.”
Johnsen said many of Michigan’s schools are failing and repealing the letter-grade system without establishing a replacement will simply mask crucial information from parents and the community rather than solve the problem at hand.
In the 2021-22 school year, 704 schools in Michigan received a ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade in proficiency, a category based on the number of their students who score proficiently on the state math and English/Language Arts assessments.
House Bill 4166 was approved by the Democrat majority. It now advances to the Michigan Senate for further consideration.

Great part-time jobs for retirees
Many adults nearing retirement age count down the days until they can bid adieu to the daily tasks of commuting and working so they can enjoy much more time for recreation, travel or whatever is they aspire to do. As enticing as unending free time may seem, some retirees find it is not ideal to be entirely free from the responsibility of
working. As current seniors can attest, inflation can drive up the costs of living, meaning that seniors who were once able to afford a certain retirement lifestyle may no longer enjoy that hard-earned luxury. Others may miss the daily opportunities to socialize that working provides, or the way problem-solving on the job stimulates the brain. But even retirees who miss working may not be ready to return to the workforce full-time. That can make part-time employment an ideal fit for mature workers. Here’s a look at some part-time positions that could be a good fit for older adults reentering the workforce.

clude greeting customers, making sales, putting out inventory, and helping customers select merchandise. Being personable and having good customer service skills are necessary traits to have when working in retail. Many stores offer part-time employees flexible hours so schedules can be customized.
CONSULTANT
Retirees who loved their job but wanted to spend less time doing it can return as consultants. According to The Balance: Money, individuals often find they earn more per hour working as consultants than they did as fulltime staff members. Consulting is a way to share expertise and experience without making a full-time commitment.
CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE
A customer service representative is tasked with helping customers solve problems and ensuring customer satisfaction. He or she may work ain a traditional office or store location, or answer calls and resolve issues from home.
SCHOOL POSITIONS
Retirees may want to consider jobs working in schools or in related capacities. Driving a school bus is an option if people are willing to undergo the proper training and licensing to operate this type of vehicle. Seniors also may consider working as lunchroom aides or lunch service providers, crossing guards, substitute teachers, and paraprofessionals. School employees will only work a few hours during the day. They’ll also enjoy many holidays off as well as summer vacations.
RECEPTIONIST
Receptionists greet patients or customers in office settings. According to AARP, they are the welcoming faces of organizations. Answering phones and light clerical work also may be required of receptionists. Those who want to work off-peak hours can think about working nights and weekends in hospitals or skilled nursing facilities.
Seniors have many different options if they decide they want to return to the workforce in a part-time capacity. FP235930
