She was loved dearly by many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and her friends. Her family was her life, and she had a close relationship with each one.
Virginia had several occupations including running her parents general store in Palo, factory worker, waitressing, cashier, owned a restaurant in Saranac, and for 36+ years owned/managed several Adult Foster Care Homes until she retired last June at 89. She loved people and always cared for others which brought her tremendous joy and many blessings. Her faith was strong, and she was a great prayer warrior for her family and others.
She loved cooking and baking, enjoyed playing cards and board games, crocheting, reading her Bible, and camping during fair week at the Ionia Free Fair.

† CUSACK David Louis Cusack, Sr., a lifelong resident of Ionia, Michigan, answered his last call on March 3, 2023 at the age of 77 with the loving comfort of his daughter Mary Catherine at his side. Born on March 27, 1945, David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community member who spent his life in service to others. He now joins his wife, MaryClaire, his father Gerald, and his mother Hazel in Heaven.
David’s life of service began as an altar boy at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia, which he attended faithfully his entire life. He went on to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, a testament to his dedication, leadership, and commitment to excellence.
Early in his career at the Chrysler Trim Plant in Lyons, David was asked to preside over UAW Local 1269 representing his fellow workers through difficult economic times. He was active with the Jaycees of Ionia in the 1970s volunteering on countless community service projects. Somehow in addition to all of this, while working full time and helping to raise his four children, David found time to attend Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, eventually earning a BS in Business Administration. He leveraged this education when he purchased Muir Hardware, maintaining a successful business vital to the community for over 20 years.
But perhaps David’s most significant contributions to his community came through his 32 years of service as a volunteer firefighter and first responder/EMT for the Muir and Lyons-Muir Fire Departments and Emergency Services Coordinator for Ionia County. Through countless hours of training and service, David exemplified the quiet competence that defined his life. He was always there when his community needed him, without fanfare or expectation of recognition. He was a man of few words but made a lasting impact on everyone he met.
With little time for leisure, the activities that David chose for his “vacations” were invariably ambitious physical challenges. He relished outdoor activities including climbing mountains, volcanoes, and glaciers, paddling lakes and rivers, and backpacking for days in the remote wilderness. After work, for relaxation he engaged in a grueling training regimen to achieve national and international recognition as a champion competitor in the Scott Firefighter’s Combat Challenge.
Retiring to Arizona David continued to seek ways to serve his community, volunteering for the National Park Service in the Superstition Mountains and Tonto National Forest and serving as an auxiliary officer for the Apache Junction Public Safety Department. While the other snowbirds were lounging around swimming pools, he was more likely to be found at the station parking lot, hand washing a squad car, or out clearing chollas on a hot desert trail, a shining example of hard work and dedication to family and community to the very end of his days.
David is survived by his children, David (Stacy) Cusack Jr., Mary Catherine Cusack, Charles Cusack, and Jon (Jamie) Cusack, as well as his grandchildren, Claire Demorest, Tallon Cusack, and Blake Cusack. He is also survived by his brothers Robert (Beverly) Cusack, Edward (Beverly) Cusack, sisters Julia (Harold) Hull, Dolores Thomas, and Diane Fox. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. on March 16 at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia, and a Mass will be held at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on March 18 at 12:00 PM followed by a reception in the cafeteria. The family will receive visitors from 11:00 - 12:00 on Saturday at the Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to SS. Peter and Paul Church or the Parkinsons’s Foundation in honor of his legacy of lifelong service. David will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his example of quiet competence will continue to inspire and guide us. Online condolences may be made at www.lakefuneralhomes.com

† MCKINCH Norma Jean McKinch 4/18/1937 – 3/9/2023
Norma, age 85 passed at home to join her husband, Donald. Together they raised 3 children, Vicki Kennedy (Mike), Tim McKinch (Angela), Sherrie McKinch (Freddie Kroft). Grandchildren Stacy Moore (Gabe), Jolene Hopkins, Josh McKinch (Stacy), Jessica Supplee (Ryan), Jennifer McKinch, James Kennedy (Carli), and Sarah Kennedy. She was also a proud great grandmother of Kali McKinch, Brynn McKinch, Deagan Moore, Ferran Moore, Trenton Hopkins, Rebecca Hopkins, Sydney Supplee, Brooke Supplee, Cooper Kennedy and Rhett Kennedy. She also is survived by brothers Richard and John Miller. She was preceded in death by husband Donald, parents Martha and Fred Miller and sister-in law Patricia Miller. Her loyal cat Spotsey was by her side.
Norma was born in Holt, Michigan. The family moved to Traverse City where she graduated from high school before meeting husband Don. She worked at General Motors and left when they purchased the farm in Saranac. While often thought of as a “silent” partner for many of their ventures, she was a clear voice and very involved behind the scenes. She loved to play the ukulele and sing. She traveled a great deal with her husband and was always up for a trip with her kids and grandkids. She taught them important things in life like drinking from a hose or faucet, timeless colorful songs and how to polka. She may have been described as “spunky” with a great sense of humor. She was fiercely independent for most of her life and passed that on to her daughters and granddaughters. Even as she was burdened with dementia, she still loved to laugh and play pranks. Nothing was sweeter than to hear her laugh after she would jump out from behind the refrigerator to startle guests. Visitation will be Tuesday March 14th from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Lake Funeral Home Ionia with a memorial service Wed. March 15th at 1:00 PM Lake Funeral Home Ionia. Online condolences may be made at www.lakefuneralhomes.com. Because of her love of her companion cat Spots, memorial contributions will be made to The Ionia County Animal Shelter.

Make the most of the summer camp experience
Summer camp season will soon be here, and throngs of children will board buses each morning or pack their parents’ cars full of essentials to survive a few weeks away from home.
Looking back, many adults who experienced summer camp have fond memories of their adventures — whether they all went according to plan or there were some hiccups along the way. Parents want their children to make their own summer camp memories. Even if the canoe capsizes or the cabin leaks during a summer thunderstorm, such experiences can build character and strengthen friendships.
According to RegPack, an online registration software company, more than six million American children participate in some form of camp each year, including sleep-away camp or day camp. The American Camp Association says that num-

ber is closer to 14 million, with the most popular camp session length around one week or less. Families getting prepared for camp can follow these guidelines to ensure the experience is one kids won’t soon forget.
SEARCH FOR AN ACCREDITED CAMP
Accredited camps must meet more than 300 standards related to program quality, safety and health, according to the ACA. An accredited camp will likely give parents the most peace of mind.
CONSIDER CHILDREN’S READINESS
There’s no magic age when a child may be ready to go to camp, but generally kids who are ages seven or eight may be fine to start a resident sleep-away camp. Day camp kids can begin as early as age three, the same age kids often begin preschool programs. Gauge whether the child has spent time away

from home at friends’ or family members’ homes to decide if a resident camp will be the right fit or if a day camp is more appropriate.
CONNECT WITH FELLOW CAMPERS
If possible, attend a meetand-greet prior to the start of the season. Neighborhood day camps tend to draw kids from local communities, so there’s already a chance kids will know a few fellow campers.
GET TO KNOW CAMP COUNSELORS EARLY ON Campers can introduce themselves to camp counselors and other program directors and are urged to ask questions about specific programs. Counselors can direct campers toward activities they may enjoy.

SITUATIONS
Much of summer camp will likely be smooth-sailing, but it’s reasonable to expect some bumps along the way. Campers shouldn’t expect perfection, but use the situations that may go awry as learning experiences on how to handle adversity — trying to find the fun in them anyway. Even a medical situation can be overcome, particularly because camps staff qualified medical personnel to ensure campers are safe and well. Summer camp can be a great experience, especially when families take some pre-camp measures aimed at ensuring kids have a fun season. TF234871

Did you know?
A 2017 study published in the journal The Lancet examined images of part of the brain involved with fear and stress and found links between stress and cardiovascular disease episodes. Various situations can induce stress, but work-related stress tends to be especially common among adults, and that stress isn’t always due to workload.
For example, Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that researchers have found that people who are worried about losing their job are almost 20 percent more likely to have heart disease. Perhaps even more surprising is the link between stress and enjoyable events, as Johns Hopkins also notes that one study found heart attacks more than doubled in one German city when the national team was playing in the World Cup. All of this points to the importance of corralling and managing stress, whether it’s caused by work or leisure activities. TF234870

One-Day Home Projects to Transform Your Spaces
(StatePoint) Want to give your home a fresh look but don’t have a lot of time to spend? Check out these five home projects that can be completed in just one day.
REFRESH THE WALL PAINT
If there’s one area in desperate need of a refresh, painting is a great place to start. With the right planning (and an early start), you can easily paint a room in a day. Purchase the materials you need, including primer, the paint color of your choice, brushes and rollers, and a high-quality painter’s tape like FrogTape Multi-Surface painter’s tape. Made with PaintBlock Technology, FrogTape ensures crisp and professional paint lines, so there will be no time wasted on touch-ups. Once you have your supplies, tape the walls, apply primer and paint away. In just one day, a fresh coat of paint will have the room feeling brand new.
ENHANCE THE ENTRYWAY
Your entryway should give your guests a warm welcome. A few simple
solutions for sprucing up this area are organizing shoes, hanging up coats and adding a pop of color by laying a rug at the door. If you have the space, time and budget, you could consider larger improvements such as adding a bench, shoe storage or a coat rack. Complete the look by adding decorative pillows to the bench or adding frames to the wall.
REPLACE BATHROOM ACCESSORIES
One way to make a space look more contemporary is to update the hardware and fixtures. This works particularly well in bathrooms where showerheads, faucets, towel bars and cabinet handles can be swapped out for matching, on-trend matte black or gold finishes. Other small,
easily replaced items include shower curtains, towels, bathmats, soap dispensers and toothbrush holders. These swaps may seem minor to make, but they can make a big difference in the look and feel of the room.
ORGANIZE CABINETS, DRAWERS AND SHELVES
Once the hardware has been replaced on cabinets and drawers, open them up and get things in order. Start by going through what you have and
deciding what can be eliminated. Clearing out clutter is particularly important for open shelves that are visible in the room. Once you’ve decided on what to keep, replace items in an organized manner so they’re easy to find going forward. Sorting out these small spaces can help keep things running smoothly.
REARRANGE A BEDROOM
Sometimes you just need to look at what you already have with a fresh perspective. Rearranging the furniture in a room can make
it feel brand new. It can be as easy as switching which side of the bed the nightstand is on or moving the dresser to another spot on the wall. Best of all, this approach doesn’t require spending money on new items or supplies – all you need is your creativity and
imagination!
For more DIY inspiration, visit frogtape.com.
With so many DIY projects that can be done in just one day, there’s no need to put the task off. Consider giving your home the refresh it deserves now.

How to reduce your risk of driving distracted
The prevalence of technology has ensured that many things are competing for people’s attention at any given moment. That includes when people are driving, which has contributed to a dangerous phenomenon known as distracted driving.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that there were nearly 36,000 fatal crashes involving distracted drivers in 2020. Such numbers are sobering, but it’s worth nothing that handheld cellphone usage by drivers declined significantly across all age groups between 2012 and 2021.
Drivers of all ages can consider these strategies to avoid distractions while behind the wheel.
(2.8 percent) and 2021 (3.7 percent). With so much to gain from eliminating distracted driving, drivers of all ages can consider these strategies to avoid distractions while behind the wheel.
the settings function on a smartphone.
NHTSA data indicates such usage declined from 5.9 percent in 2012 to 3.7 percent by 2021 among drivers between the ages of 16 and 24. Among drivers between the ages of 25 and 69, driver handheld cellphone usage dropped from 5.4 percent in 2012 to 2.5 percent by 2021. But the work isn’t done, as the NHTSA notes that a significant uptick of driver handheld cellphone usage among drivers between the ages of 16 and 24 was reported between 2020
• TURN OFF NOTIFICATIONS. According to the app industry resource BusinessofApps, the average smartphone user in the United States receives 46 app push notifications each day. Additional sources estimate that figure could be closer to 80 push notifications per day. There’s no denying the allure of such notifications, so drivers who find them too hard to resist can turn all notifications off prior to getting behind the wheel. This is quickly and easily accomplished through
• AVOID MAKING CALLS. Hands-free capabilities may make it easier to keep both hands on the wheel, but they don’t ensure drivers’ minds will stay on the road. Hands-free phone calls and voice-activated messaging apps take drivers’ minds off the road. When behind the wheel, resolve to stick to driving and driving alone by avoiding making phone calls or receiving and sending messages.
• STAY FOCUSED AT STOPLIGHTS. Red lights present another tempting chance to peruse text messages, emails and push notifications. But drivers can easily be drawn into conversations that continue long after a red light has turned to green. So it’s best to maintain your focus at stoplights by waiting patiently for the light to turn and avoiding your phone entirely.
• UTILIZE AIRPLANE MODE IF NECESSARY. If none of the above recommendations are working, drivers can always switch their phones to airplane mode when driving. Doing
so effectively blocks all incoming messages and distractions from being received by the phone until airplane mode is then turned off.
All accidents involving dis-
tracted driving incidents are preventable. Drivers can take simple and more extensive measures to reduce their vulnerability to distractions while behind the wheel.

A good joke can liven up any social engagement, but the value of humor goes well beyond breaking the ice at parties and other get-togethers. According to the Cleveland Clinic, laughter can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps to lower heart rate and help people breathe more easily. Given such benefits, it's no surprise that laughter has been linked to a host of medical benefits, including stress relief and improved heart health. TF234884

5 Tips to Jump Start Your Weight Loss Post-Pandemic
(StatePoint) With the New Year right around the corner, new survey results suggest that 2023 will finally be the year that Americans bring their health back into focus.
According to a recent poll of 2,000 U.S. adults aged 30 and above commissioned by Nutrisystem and conducted by OnePoll, two in three Americans credit the past two years with teaching them how important their health really is. And 71%
believe the pandemic has taught them to be more observant of their health. The poll also revealed that two-thirds of Americans said weight loss is a “top health goal” for them over the next year.
However, for many, losing weight can seem like a difficult task. The truth of the matter is it doesn’t have to be. Courtney McCormick, corporate dietitian at Nutrisystem, offers the following tips to help you take that step
toward a healthier you.
1. KEEP HEALTHY FOOD IN SIGHT
Having healthy food at arm’s reach can make losing weight easier. A Cornell study found that women who kept a bowl of fruit where they could see it weighed an average of 13 pounds less than those who didn’t. Plans like Nutrisystem deliver healthy, portion-controlled options right to your door, making it even simpler to make good choices.
2. GIVE YOURSELF A BEDTIME
Children aren’t the only ones who need a bedtime! Adults need a set bedtime as well to be productive the next day. Setting a certain bedtime and sticking to it will also help your body get the rest that it needs to burn stubborn fat. “Not having a good night’s rest can lead to craving sugar and fatty foods, which can also lead to weight gain,” says McCormick.
3. WORK OUT IN 10-MINUTE SETS
If you’re short on time or have back-to-back meetings, working out in intervals of 10 minutes three times a day creates more flexibility in your busy schedule.

What to do when parents are poor sports?
Heated debates with referees and trash-talking players is something one may expect when watching professional sports. But such behavior is not expected of parents on the sidelines of youth sporting events. However, unruly parents are on display with increasing frequency at various youth sporting events.
According to a 2017 survey by the National Association of Sports Officials, adult behavior is the reason more than 75 percent of all high school referees quit. About 80 percent of new officials stop after two years on the job. This has led to a shortage of officials across the youth sports landscape.
Richard Weissbourd, a psychologist and senior lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, says there may be several reasons behind the uptick in poor parental behavior at sporting events. The media and social media platforms have normalized demeaning and degrading people with whom one disagrees without fear of recourse, Weissbourd says. Also, the behavior could stem from parents wanting to compensate for shortcomings in their own youth sports histories. Others may be motivated by notions that winning is all that matters.
Children are the biggest losers when parents misbehave at youth sporting events. Rather than having fun in sports with teammates, youth experience unnecessary stress and anxiety about the game. Some are too anxious to compete in events for fear of losing. Others are being affected by pressure-induced statements thrown in, such as, “I know you are going to win today.” Some kids are embarrassed by their own mothers and fathers yelling at them to do better, or demeaning other players and coaches.
Youth sports leagues are starting to take inventory of unsavory parental behavior at kids’ sports events. While it’s one thing for parents to be invested in their children’s success, it’s another to allow it to lead to inappropriate or intense behavior that is far from sportsmanlike. Here’s how it may be possible to change patterns.
• SHARE A NEW PERSPECTIVE. Oftentimes sports events, particularly at the high school level, are recorded and/or streamed for viewing later on. Problematic parents can be called in to view recaps of their behavior which may be caught on video to see that they may need to tone things down. This could be an embarrassing wake-up call.
• RALLY FOR CHANGED POLICIES. Youth sports leagues and schools can be petitioned to implement stricter policies for dealing with parents who are out of control at sporting events. Restriction from attending games could be one avenue, particularly for repeat offenders.
• MODEL GOOD BEHAVIOR. Coaches and officials can remain calm and collected even in the face of aggression directed their way to illustrate to players how to behave. Furthermore, actions like congratulating the winning team and not supporting cheat-
ing or making illegal maneuvers during play should be reinforced.
• LEND AN EAR. Sometimes parents act out at games not because of the game itself, but some other stressor that they may have going on in their lives. Mit-
igating the situation may come down to listening to a problem and providing a healthy outlet for that frustration.
Reducing incidents involving out-of-control parents at sporting events is becoming a larger priority as issues continue and fewer coaches and officials are inclined to volunteer heir time. TF234887
