Olly was absent from the X Factor auditions as he was off gallivanting around the USA with Simon Cowell’s fellow protégés, One Direction. Between fighting off the ladies, performing to sell-out areas and mingling with Hollywood stars, Olly caught up with our own Christie Holland to discuss his time in the states, his upcoming releases and of course, his Xtra Factor antics.

that’s the phrase superstar Olly Murs used to describe his time in the spotlight when Society Marbella had the opportunity to catch up with the Xtra Factor presenter last month.

O

lly Murs is one of the most successful pop stars of the past decade. In just two years, he’s crafted two doubleplatinum albums, which have produced three No 1 singles (including the platinumselling Dance With Me Tonight) and a further three Top 20 hits. Along with Ed Sheeran and Example, Olly is the only recent male solo star with a sell-out headline arena tour to his name, as well as becoming a fixture on the main festival stage. In addition, this month Olly is back on our screens with Caroline Flack to present the Xtra Factor, the ITV2 version of the hit show where Olly found fame. Between singing for thousands across the USA, meeting this year’s X Factor contestants and recording his new tracks, Christie Holland grabbed five minutes of Olly’s time to discuss this year’s X Factor line-up, touring with One Direction and his female fanbase.

How are you enjoying presenting this year’s Xtra Factor once again?

I haven’t been able to do as much presenting this season, as I would have liked, as I have been so busy. I managed to visit a few contestants over the last few months and now I am back on the live shows, I’ve really missed it, it´s great to be back!

Do you have anything crazy in store for us?

The live shows are always great fun. Me and Caroline have great banter on the shows, and often play funny games with the contestants and guest stars. I’m looking forward to working with all the producers again to make sure we make it even better than last year.

Do you feel you are able to relate more to the contestants, as you have been in their shoes yourself?

Yes absolutely, it’s crazy to think it was three years ago now that I was on the show, but I think the contestants relate to me more as they know I’ve been through it and can offer good advice.

What do you think of the new judging lineup?

I love Louis, Tulisa and Gary – and think that Nicole will be a great addition to the show.

How hot is she???? Not complaining about the new eye candy!

When can we next enjoy some new material from you?

Very soon, I’m just putting the finishing touches to my new album which will be out by the end of the year! I can’t wait for everyone to hear it, I’m really proud of cowriting this whole album.

You have recently finished touring with One Direction in the USA, how was that?

That was CRAZY! It was an amazing experience, and I was so pleased I had the opportunity to do it. Their fans are so mental... there were a lot of ear-piercing screams to listen to for five weeks!

Were you close friends with the boys before you toured together?

I’d met the boys a handful of times at X Factor and in the office as we share the same management, and got on with all of them. But I was already close to Niall – he’s a top lad, and was excited that I was joining them on tour!

How did you feel your music was received in the USA? I think its still very early days there, and I haven’t had the chance to spend as much time in the US as I’d like, but I’ve had a great feedback on my first single there ‘Heart Skips A Beat.’ It was amazing on the tour to have 1D’s fans singing back my songs.

How was the female attention in America?

The 1D fans were all quite young as my fans in the UK are all ages, but I won’t lie…

I did love any female attention I got in the US… American girls are good fun!!

Is it nice to be back in the UK? Yes it was nice to get back after five weeks and see my mates and my family… I also got a lovely welcome back from the UK fans, which was great!

What did you miss while you were away?

Aside from my friends and family (I’ve got a very cute one year old nephew), I missed my house a lot. I’ve recently bought and renovated it, so I definitely missed coming home to there every night as opposed to a bunk on a tour bus!

Will you be performing on this year’s X Factor live shows?

I really hope so!! I work on the show, so I’m sure they can find me a space to perform my next single but it hasn’t been confirmed yet!

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT What is the strangest request you have ever received?

Hmm….tough question! I find it weird to be asked to record random video messages for people. I get offered a lot of money sometimes to record messages for all kinds of occasions! Very bizarre!

Who is your celebrity crush?

The same as most men probably – Cheryl Cole is gorgeous, Megan Fox is a favourite, and Katherine Jenkins is a new one! Also, I love Rita Ora’s vibe, she’s a very cool girl!

You are releasing your autobiography, ‘Happy Days’, this month, what inspired you to tell you story so far?

I was approached by several publishers, and decided it would be nice to document how my life has drastically changed in the last few years. I talk about auditioning three times for X Factor and being determined to get through, going off travelling and how I wanted to change my life. I hope people like it, there’ll be loads of exclusive pictures in there as well!

Can you tell us what is next for you? What are you plans for the next twelve months?

Well I am releasing the next single and album this year, so will be very busy promoting that everywhere. I have a big UK arena tour booked in for next February through to April followed by a tour in Europe. I will hopefully be releasing three singles next year, so will definitely stay busy!!!

Thank you so much for talking to us, finally, before we leave you, we always ask our celebrity cover stars, where do you hope to be in ten years time?

My pleasure!! In ten years time I will be knocking 40 years old… hmmm… I would love to still be doing what I’m doing, if anything I would love to still be in this industry, mentoring, writing or running a business!

Are you single at the moment?

I am indeed!!! Single and ready to mingle… haha!

What do you look for in a girl?

I have obviously got to be attracted to them, but the main thing for me is that they are up for a laugh… I don’t like girls that take themselves too seriously!

In keeping with Hollywood´s tradition for crazy baby names, Uma Thurman recently revealed her baby girl’s full name via a statement from her representative.

The talented young actress will replace Friends with Benefits star Mila Kunis and appear in the new SS13 Miss Dior bag advertising campaign which debuts around the world in March 2013. Known as the city that never sleeps, few other metropolises compare to the big lights of New York, home to an astounding array of people from every corner of the globe, NYC rules in the realm of art, fashion, theatre, cinema and music and its renowned historical sights, sporting arenas and world-class restaurants all contribute to its legendary status. From the Caribbean kitchens in Harlem to the Michelin-starred eateries scattered across Manhattan, New York offers endless opportunities to stamp your palate’s passport. You can’t visit New York without sampling the city’s famed food; pizza. Head to Lombardi’s Pizzeria on Spring Street where you will find checkered tablecloths and black and white pictures hanging on painted brick walls. While all the pizza’s are delicious, the clam pizza deserves a special mention with the whole clams adding a salty punch to the delicious pie. In search of something a little more lavish, Tertulia sits at the top of the food chain and is considered the best Spanish restaurant across the pond. She’s Worth It W

e are coming to the end of Marbella Makeover now, with Helen’s hair being the penultimate process to be performed. One of the major courses of action that will completely change her appearance, this was another of Helen’s most anticipated procedures, as she has always battled with her hair. Thin and wispy, it has been fairly difficult to manage in the past, so her face lit up when the word ‘extensions’ was expressed a few months ago at her initial consultation with Advanced Hair Studio. After discussing what would suit Helen’s face shape and what vision she was looking for, her new hair was ordered in.

Helen arrived at Advanced Hair Studio at 11am, and was kindly greeted by the team; owner Dan Waring and head stylist Charlie Coyle. After a quick natter about how fabulous Helen is looking now, (don’t worry, you only have one more month until we reveal her as a new woman), she was ushered through to a private consultant room where Advanced Hair Studio perform all their appointments.

There are many factors that are unique to Advanced Hair Studio; one being the ability to select a film to watch while you are having your treatment. So after much deliberation, Helen chose a movie and relaxed into her chair.

Charlie began with Helen’s colour, using a combination of three different highlights and lowlights to match her exist-

ing hair to the colour of the extensions.

Helen’s natural colour was what Charlie described as an ash blonde, which many people spend hundreds of euros on to achieve, but after years of abusing her hair with dyes and other hair extensions, Helen’s hair became lifeless and limp.

Using three different tones gives the hair a more natural sun kissed look; exactly what Helen is looking for.

“I’m not really interested in the over exaggerated look, I want my hair to be manageable and natural so it can be easily maintained.”

Advanced Hair Studio is an anti hair-loss clinic, with the theme running throughout from the hair implants, natural hair extensions and the hair dyes used contain no ammonia. This chemical is present in many hair dyes, but it makes the hair more fragile and prone to splitting, but the dyes that Advanced Hair Studio use won’t damage the hair in any way.

After half an hour with the hair dye on, Helen’s chair was swung around to the sink where the dye was then washed off. When washing the hair, Charlie used a neutralizer on the tips to rid the hair of any yellowy tones. Also, a conditioning Moroccan oil was applied to ensure Helen’s hair was in the optimum condition for the extensions to be applied.

Advanced Hair Studio specialise in Flashpoints hair extensions that use no glues or adhesives to attach the strands to the hair. One of the world’s most sophisticated hair extension procedures, and unique to the hair emporium, a single link is attached to the root of a strand of your own hair and is locked into place.

The extensions are remi-refined customed hair, where the cuticle is cut in the same direction of the hair to prevent knotting, again running with the theme of anti hair-loss. The Flashpoints hair extensions are so natural looking and light, Helen couldn’t even feel them as they were being attached. This puts less strain on the hair and means the extensions last longer. Her hair was then cut and styled into a fashion that Helen was happy with and that would be manageable in her day-to-day life.

There is little maintenance that needs to be done with regards to Helen’s new locks; she can treat the extensions like normal hair.

Using no glues or adhesives, there is no need to worry about damage to the hair; Charlie advised to use a good quality conditioner to ensure the hair is kept in optimal condition and therefore the extensions will last longer. Then, every six to eight weeks, Helen will return for a ‘refusion’, a process of relocating the extension to its original position, as they move as your own hair grows. advancedhairstudios.es

to contract, the visibility of facial lines and wrinkles decrease. Following this, Dr. Kaye then added filler to Helen’s lips, mainly focusing on her top lip as it thinner than the bottom. The filler was used to create more volume in the upper lip, which enhanced its appearance and plumpness. There was also a small scar on Helen’s cheek that she contracted as a child that was corrected through a small filler injection.

The second, and more major, alteration to Helen’s face was completing the treatment on her nose.

ast month, Helen underwent three major facial surgeries at Ocean Clinic; an eyelid lift, a mini facelift and a rhinoplasty.

Even after only a month, the swelling to her face has now settled down enough for Dr. Kaye to complete the facial altering process.

It’s important to compliment the major surgeries with minor aesthetic procedures to truly achieve a youthful look. These include Botox and lip fillers, and to finalise the correction to Helen’s nose.

Minor aesthetic procedures such as Botox and fillers are normally performed without sedation, but seeing as Dr. Kaye had to sedate Helen to operate on her nose one final time, he chose to complete everything whilst Helen was under the ‘twilight’ state. The initial procedure was tackling Helen’s lines and wrinkles on her face.

Each wrinkle is reversible or dynamic when it first appears, however, over time, the pulling of the muscles at the skin’s surface cause an irreversible break-down of the elastic fibres, and thus the wrinkle becomes permanent or static.

These can be tackled in two ways, using something everyone nowadays is very familiar with thanks to the youthful celebrities that grace our movie screens and glossy magazines; Botox and fillers.

Dr. Kaye addressed the wrinkles around her eyes by using the former. The most popular minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure performed, Botox is used to treat those problem crows feet, forehead lines and frown lines. With little downtime and almost immediate results, these injections can help restore a smoother, more youthful appearance to the face. As the muscles in the treatment area are unable

Every time Helen smiles, the muscle that connects the nose to the mouth pulls the tip of her nose down. In turn, this exposes the hump on her nose that she has been so conscious about.

Dr. Kaye had reduced this hump in the previous surgery, but this nose depressor muscle that drags Helen’s tip down with each expression highlighted the hump more. Therefore, it was prudent that the muscle itself was removed and some of the cartilage in her nose was shaved away. Helen was under sedation for approximately half an hour and was in and out of Ocean Clinic within three hours! Not bad for a treatment that will take years off her!

You have to learn about the addictive nature of processed foods and make a commitment to avoid them for a period of time to break free of this addiction.

UNDERSTAND NUTRIENT DENSITY

My dietary advice is unique, because I focus on quality, not quantity. The most important nutritional concept is this: Health = Nutrients/Calories. For excellent health and life expectancy, focus on consuming more foods with a high micronutrient to calorie ratio. Micronutrients are vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals, they do not contain calories, but they have vital functions in the body.

High nutrient foods come straight from nature, whole plant foods like vegetables, fruit, seeds, and beans should be the basis of a healthy, anti-cancer diet.

The nutritional discovery here is that without adequate micronutrients, food cravings, discomfort, and the demand to over-consume, calories will be overwhelming and derail any effort to lose weight or eat healthfully.

RETRAIN YOUR TASTE BUDS

Like developing any new skill, it takes practice to begin to enjoy new foods, you may have to try it 10-15 times before you begin to like it, especially if your taste has been desensitized by intense sweets, overly salted and processed foods. As you learn to enjoy the taste of healthy foods, your desire for unhealthy food will continue to lessen. Try new and different produce, for example dishes made with artichokes or exotic mushrooms, and experiment with different herbs, spices, and salt-free seasonings to create dishes that you love to eat.

EMBRACE YOUR NATURAL SWEET TOOTH

Our natural sweet tooth has a purpose, sweets from fresh fruits and sweet vegetables provide us not just with carbohydrates for energy but also with a large assortment of phytochemicals and other substances that prevent illness. Fruit makes the best dessert; for example, try blending up some frozen bananas with a little hemp milk and vanilla for delicious and easy banana ice cream.

MAKE THE SALAD THE MAIN DISH

Leafy greens are the foods with the highest nutrient to calorie ratio, eat at least one large salad a day. My specialty is delicious, but healthful salad dressings that taste so good you will not only enjoy salads, but you will want to lick the bottom of the bowl when you are done.

AVOID NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES AND EAT LOTS OF ANTI-CANCER FOODS

No one diet can be perfect for everyone, and individuals have different abilities to absorb certain nutrients. However, one of the most important deficiencies to recognise is Vitamin D. Over half of the world’s population is deficient in vitamin D. Making sure no deficiencies are present with a blood test and taking some extra vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids is a wise choice. S

eptember was a momentous month for the financial markets, courtesy of the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank. The US central bank embarked on a third round of quantitative easing to boost domestic economic growth prospects, while its eurozone counterpart laid the groundwork for a practicable solution to the region’s debt crisis in the form of a new, conditional bond-buying plan for needy member states.

The Fed’s initiative essentially involves monthly purchases of mortgagebacked securities to the tune of $40 billion. The programme will remain in force until signs of a sustainable improvement in the domestic labour market emerge (data preceding the programme’s announcement suggested a significant deterioration in the jobs market, thus prompting the Fed to act). Although the US jobs picture has subsequently brightened, with the headline unemployment rate now standing at 7.8% vs. 10% in October 2009, the Fed’s move is nevertheless timely, given the recent downward revision to estimated second-quarter US GDP growth from an annualised 1.7% to 1.3%.

The ECB’s new bailout plan requires acceptance by those countries applying for aid of conditions imposed by the “troika” (the ECB, the European Commission and the International Monetary Fund). The vehicle for conducting the plan’s “outright monetary transactions” will be the now-ratified European Stability Mechanism, which will supersede the current European Financial Stability Facility in due course.

Also, the EC has announced plans for a European banking union to supervise that industry, for which the ECB is expected to assume responsibility.

ENCOURAGING STEPS BUT ARE THEY ENOUGH? Initially, the central banks’ measures were welcomed by the investment community: the Fed’s “QE3” saw US stock indices rise to around five-year highs, with the broad-based NASDAQ Composite Index advancing to levels last seen in 2000; in Europe, the major beneficiary was the euro itself, its viability now being more assured than hitherto.

There is, of course, no guarantee that these initiatives will ultimately be effective. Formidable challenges lie ahead on both sides of the Atlantic: the US “fiscal cliff” (draconian tax rises and spending cuts that will automatically come into effect next January as per current legislation) is looming large, and no eurozone state has so far applied for aid under the ECB’s new scheme (although Spain is widely expected to do so in the near future).

Despite such reservations, these central bank policies offer more cause for optimism than previous attempts at restoring confidence. nless you have been living on Planet Fluffy for the past seven years or so, or are a newly arrived Russian Trillionaire, you might have noticed that we are in the middle of something of an economic crisis at the moment. Not just a “we’ll have to tighten our belts a little” of crisis, but a full blown “Sweet Jasu and all the little angels! If I have to tighten this any further my Calvins will ride up and I’ll be doing a passable impersonation of Jimmy Sommerville” style of recession. Those with long memories may remember the financial crisis of ‘91, or even ‘73 (although as Spain was under the thumb of a Fascist Dictatorship at the time any criticism of Franco’s Financial Policy was likely to bring a knock on the door in the middle of the night). With the light at the end of the tunnel now proven to be that of an oncoming express train, how are we in Marbella to make the best of the worst of times?

Let’s face a couple of basic facts first. In Marbella cash is king. You can pretend that it’s a ‘City of Tourism’, or that there is a burgeoning cultural scene, but at the end of the day if you want to be popular in this town,

just rock up with a huge pile of cash, wave it around and see how many new friends you soon have (see Russian Trillionaire above). And you’re also likely to find yourself with a sultry new eastern European girlfriend as well. This brings us to my next, admittedly bitter and twisted, point about the recession in Marbella.

If you are one of those deeply spiritual individuals that posts life-affirming stuff on Facebook – you know the sort of thing “What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger” (although stroke victims may beg to differ), along with a photo of a dramatic landscape, you will know the hoary old chestnut “If you love someone set them free.

If they don’t come back then they were never yours”. With the recession in Marbella it may be a time to reevaluate your relationships with the Blinged out Bimbo from Belarus with the following, equally life-affirming slogan, especially valid for Marbella

So now that you’ve got rid of the high spending girlfriend, you might take a look at the motor. And with due deference to the supercar dealerships up and down the Golden Mile, once you get off the main drag, you are likely to find that your 2 inches from the ground, racing spec dream machine is about as in demand as a surprise bungee cord tied to Felix Baumgartner. Once again there are several reasons for this. Firstly the roads around Marbella have some of the biggest potholes in Spain, some of them requiring climbing gear and a team of Sherpas to clamber out of. Then there is the problem of visibility. Marbella Town Hall has been unable to pay the

electric bill, which means that, without ‘cats’ eyes’ on the road or street lighting, you’ll need a rack of lights on your roof to avoid the potholes at night (see above). And the third and final reason that you need a 4x4 with a rack of lights on the roof and plenty of ground clearance is the general standard of driving here. The heady combination of lost tourists in rent-acars, drunk golfers in buggies swerving around the Aloha, Moroccan vans thundering towards Algeciras, their drivers not having slept for 36 hours and the dreaded yellow Seat Leon drivers – all badly draw tattoos, darkened windows and convinced they are Fernando Alonso’s second cousin, means that you are bound to have a bump here or a scrape there, or come back and find that some Herbert has whacked you whilst parking. If you are going to get a 4x4 by the way, DON’T buy a Range Rover Sport with darkened windows to potter around Nueva Andalucía. Due to the fact that they seem to be the Costa criminals’ favourite method of transport, you’re likely to get pulled more often than not by the Polica Local.

The recession doesn’t have to put a dampener on your social life, however. Just repeat the mantra “Staying

in is the new going out”. If you want to recreate the fun of going out and hitting the clubs in Banus, merely tune into a dance channel and jump around your living room in the dark.

You can replicate the thrill of buying a dodgy gramme by placing crushed up slimming tables in wraps around the house. Let’s face it. That’s probably what you were buying the first place. If you want to simulate the busy opening of a new restaurant, merely invite your neighbours round and then all squeeze into the pool pump room while holding a plastic glass of ‘vino collapso’ and greasy bit of jamón.

And finally you should consider alternative ways of raising cash. Half of Marbella seems to be baking cakes at the moment, while growing your own fruit and veg is also an excellent way for saving cash and if you dabble in the more exotic variety of herbs you might even make a couple of bucks. But the most important relationship during this time of crisis is with your bank so that they will support you through the peaks and troughs of the current financial crisis.

And if your current bank doesn’t support you, change bank or, in true ‘Marbs’ style - Rob it!!!!

OKTOBER FEST AT LA ZAGALETA Last month golf Club La Zagaleta hosted their first Oktoberfest Golf Tournament. With 180 participants, including 84 golfers, the event was fully booked. Being blessed with fantastic weather, the golfers had a lot of fun on this wonderful course.

The company F1 Immo Car Gallery presented a new Mercedes SL as a first prize with a value of 118.000€ for the popular hole-in-one competition on hole 2 and sponsored original Munich pints as thopies. At the hole-in-one stand, the guests were served with champagne and culinary specialities.

Despite extreme attacks no participant was able to make a hole-in-one, so Mr. Walter Fischer was able to return the vehicle back to the showroom of F1, where it is now for sale. After the tournament there was a hearty Oktoberfest with everything your heart could desire.

Despite the long day of golf and marvelous celebration the last guests left the party at 01:30 in the morning, taking with them a beautiful memory of a very successful day.

S

ince its launch in 2003, Bentley’s Continental GT has proven to be one of the best selling luxury coupes ever. Its comprehensive revamp in 2011 has only underpinned that success as Bentley ramps up its operations in new territories like China.

While the GT’s bi-turbo 6.0 litre W12 motor has grown in power and efficiency, it is still a very thirsty engine. Also, the fact that it was the only power unit offered in the GT and its convertible GTC sibling meant that the range did not have the depth offered by marketplace rivals.

All that changes with the debut of the new 4.0 litre bi-turbo V8 engine for both the Coupe and Convertible GT models. This new engine not only opens the Bentley range to new customers, but also significantly alters the character of the GT in more ways than one.

It also makes good on the promise Bentley made at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, that they would reduce their fuel consumption and emissions by 40 percent within four years, with no compromise in performance.

On paper, the new engine is 13.4 percent less powerful than the W12, with 500bhp at 6,000rpm rather than 567bhp. However, its peak torque of 660Nm from 1,700rpm to 5,000rpm is within spitting distance of the latest W12’s 700Nm, and 10Nm more than the W12 had before its 2011 upgrade.

The slight power reduction is partly offset by a 25kg weight reduction down to 2,295kg for the GT and 2,470kg for the GTC. While this is not as much as I would have hoped for, those precious kilos come out of the nose, which has

to be a good thing for handling. The front/rear weight distribution is now 51/49.

In actual fact however, as the W12 is a short and compact motor positioned quite far back in the chassis, it is no surprise that the new V8 does not gain as much advantage in packaging and weight terms as one might initially think. However, its real strengths lie in other areas.

Starting with the notion that the new V8 is more than powerful enough, it has three key differences from its bigger brother. The first is efficiency, and the others are character and soundtrack.

Salient design features of the new all-alloy motor are direct fuel injection and two turbochargers mounted in the Vee between the cylinder heads for faster response. Bentley engineers

As the engine that will take Bentley through the coming years, the V8’s dramatically enhanced fuel economy makes it a much more viable longterm proposition as the staple engine to be deployed across the range. Its ability to travel 800kms on a tank of fuel, thanks to a 40 percent improvement in economy to an average 10.6L/100km (26.7mpg) compared to the W12, is sensational for a car of this size and weight.

The one feature that gives the V8 its huge efficiency leg up is the cylinder shut down system, a technology currently being rolled out across the Volkswagen Group, starting with Audi and Bentley.

In the Bentley GT V8, the system takes advantage of today’s lightening fast electronics to instigate a shut down of four cylinders when it is working under light loads at low to medium engine speeds. In this case, the ECU is a 32-bit TriCore™ processor that can perform up to 180 million calculations per second.

Gush, explained, “A modified version of the variable valve system operates the mechanical part of the cylinder shut down system. Rather than going from lift to high lift, it simply goes from lift to no lift by transitioning to circular camshaft lobes with no profile.”

“Cylinder shut off requires bespoke intake and exhaust cams. In that respect, the cost is double, but the near 10 percent fuel saving is worth the extra money,” he said.

When cylinder shut down is initiated, the ECU changes the fuelling and ignition timing for the shutdown cylinders to zero. More fuel and ignition advance is accorded to the working cylinders, which now operate at greater efficiency on part load.

If the driver accelerates lightly, and the ECU decides that the four working cylinders can provide enough output, the others remain dormant. If not, it gives the command to resume operation of all eight cylinders.

The management of the ignition and fuelling here is critical as thermal efficiency drops right off during the switching phase. In fact, due to the ignition retardation and increase in manifold pressure, fuel consumption increases by 50 percent, with no torque gain for that split second.

How you handle the NVH issue that result from cylinder shut down vary according to the number of cylinders you have to start with. A straight four and a V12 have relatively minimal issues, but going from a V8 to a V4 created some very odd vibrations that the Bentley engineers had to put a lot of work into suppressing.

There have been V4 engines in the past, the Ford Corsair from the 1960s being the car most people remember.

However, the odd vibrations created by this inherently unbalanced configuration required some innovative engineering solutions to make them undetectable in a car as refined as the Bentley.

Key to this is the switchable hydraulic engine mount design that compensates for the different mode resonances of the engine when it is running as a V4 or a V8. At idle the mounts switch to ‘soft’ mode to absorb the secondary vibrations of the V4 configuration.

Having two extra forward gear ratios is a definite plus. The closer ratios in the new eight-speed automatic that itself delivers a six percent improvement in fuel economy, give the V8 a helping hand when it comes to sprinting away from the lights.

As torque gives you acceleration and the big numbers of the V8 and W12 motors are not far apart, it is no surprise that the GT V8 gets to 100km/h in 4.8 sec, just 0.1 sec behind its W12powered sibling.

However, the V8 does not have quite as long legs, the W12 deploying its extra 67bhp to extend itself 15km/h beyond the V8’s 303km/h Vmax. While 303km/h is plenty fast enough on the German autobahns, some owners bask in the bragging rights that come with a car capable of a genuine 200mph, even if they might never use that ability in the real world.

(six-spoke 21s are an option), a gloss black grille mesh with fine chrome surround, new under bumper air intakes, red background to the B in the Bentley winged badges, dark rear valance, and chromed horizontal figure 8 exhaust tailpipes.

Inside, the centre console between the rear seats that is standard on the W12 is gone, underlining the V8’s more sporting and lighter character. While there are seven exterior and four interior colours unique to the V8, you can also specify any of the other 17 exterior and interior colours available on the W12.

While their cars might be big and heavy, Bentley has a good motorsport pedigree and is never afraid to put their cars on a racetrack. Thus, even before I could turn a wheel on the road in the new GT V8, I was taken straight from the airport to the Circuito de Navarra racetrack, deep in the Basque region of Northern Spain, to put the car through its paces.

Navarra was opened in June 2010 and hosts the FIA GT Championship, the Superleague Formula series and is also used for winter testing by various race teams. It is 3.933km long with 15 corners, and is a very technical track.

Like most modern racetracks, it can be coned off to operate as two separate shorter circuits simultaneously.

From the pit lane, it was immediately obvious that the Bentley GT V8 is a very different animal from the W12. As the cars already on track blew past, the deep NASCAR grade V8 rumble of their engines echoed off the pit lane walls. It might take a while for some people to connect the familiar GT with this new soundtrack, but as the bent crank V8 is my personal favourite road car motor, I could not wait to get behind the wheel.

Even just setting off down the pit lane and entering the track, it was obvious that the new twin-turbo V8 is a willing and potent engine. Throttle response is sharp and lag free, and the car has impressive punch out of the bends. In fact it seemed every bit as fast as the W12 in this situation, but with palpably less inertia.

However, it was the first few corners that told me the real difference in character between these two flavours of Bentley GT. Although the V8 is not that much lighter, its snappier character and the crisper bite of its growling motor make it feel more agile, and more youthful.

TORQUE TALK Where the W12 has the demeanour of a big bruiser and can feel all of its not inconsiderable weight in this situation, the V8 turns into corners better, especially when you trail-brake into a bend.

Bentley has adjusted the torque bias of the V8 to be 40/60 front/rear, and this helps turn-in and makes the car steer more responsively.

I was enthusiastic about the revisions Bentley made to the second generation GT, which I drove in Croatia last year, and the new V8 version is the icing on the cake. As Bentley promised, it is just as fast where it counts, but it feels so much more alive and sounds amazing with its deep V8 growl bouncing off tunnel walls and rock faces.

The uprated chassis has tremendous poise when thrashed within an inch of its life. I was amazed at the iron fisted body control as I crested a slight hump in the track on full noise in third gear.

So does this make the W12 yesterday’s news? Not by a long shot, and certainly not in markets where fuel is still relatively cheap and owning the top model is considered a badge of honour. But make no mistake; the V8 is the way of the future.

You have to get on the brakes hard for a right-hander just after landing, and the air suspension’s ability to pull everything back together quickly and prepare for the next onslaught was deeply impressive.

Creating the mechanical and electronic components that control all this weight so effectively in this most extreme of circumstances speaks volumes for the calibre of the engineers at Bentley.

This is certainly consistent with the depth and breadth of engineering I have witnessed coming from Crewe since Bentley was acquired by the VW Group. It goes to show how far a relatively small prestige marque can benefit from being a jewel in the crown of one of the largest car companies in the world, especially so of one that places much store in its engineering prowess.

If punting a 2.4 tonne car around a racetrack is hard on anything, it is brakes and tyres. While the 4WD system and its clever torque shuffling system made sure that the tyre wear was not too bad, the big carbon ceramic brakes that are a cost option on the GT took a real pounding, and I felt the pedal going soft on me at the end of the session.

After a walk around back in the pits with the professional driver who accompanied me on track, we agreed that the discs and pads looked absolutely fine, and it felt like some air had got into the system, and it needed bleeding.

On the road, the GT V8 feels sharper and more sporting than the W12, but retains its creature comforts and well damped ride. It is certainly as fast in the real world, and faster when the going gets tough.

Perception is everything, and Bentley is right to pitch the V8 as the more sporting car for keener drivers.

Bentley is fast recovering from the drastic sales drop of 2008, and in 2011, sales were 37 percent up with 7,003 cars sold. Considering that their alltime sales achievement saw 10,014 cars sold in 2007, things are certainly looking up, and there is no doubt that the new V8 motor will be a significant driver of Bentley’s future success.

rillat-Savarin, French lawyer and gastronome (1755-1826) once remarked, “Tell me what

you eat, and I will tell you what you are”. It is therefore inter-

esting to find a cookery book specifically written for a particular person.

One such is ‘The Cooking Secrets of Pope Pius V’, written by Bartolomei Scappi, the pope’s chef, in 1570. Two years later the pope was dead, and subsequently canonised (although the publication and canonisation may not necessarily be connected). To become a saint, therefore, you may not have to feast off “songbirds roasted on the spit, served cold with their tongues sliced over them” or “stuffed fat geese boiled in the Lombard style”.

Also in the book, his dessert may have consisted of “Neapolitan spiced cakes” or “Marzipan balls” which were clearly more wholesome than the puds sometimes presented to the guests of Cesare or Lucrezia Borgia, children of the notorious Pope Alexander VI. From time to time the fare at the Borgia

table was coated with ‘Cantarella’, a sugary powder ideal for sprinkling on fruit pies (making it the final course in more senses than one). There is some speculation regarding the composition of this rather virulent concoction, but it is likely that it was produced by stuffing a dancing bear with arsenic (invented

by Arsinoe (d. 41 BC), sister of Queen Cleopatra of ‘Anthony and Cleopatra’ fame). When the poison began to take effect, the poor beast was strung up by its hind legs, and the saliva which poured from its mouth was collected and bottled. The Borgia family (from Gandía in Valencia) actually managed to produce a saint in Saint Francis Borgia (1510-1572), but as the third Father General of the Jesuits he was far from being a foodie. Saint Pius V apparently was, but he was not alone in being a saintly gourmet.

Saint Louis IX of France (1214-1270 was fond of entertaining Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), the great mediaeval theologian, whose stomach

was so large that in order for him to reach his food, Saint Louis had a semi-circle cut in the dining table to accommodate it. On one fast day (!) in 1248, they regaled themselves with “fresh fish, crayfish, crabs, new beans cooked in milk, eel pies, rice with almonds and powdered cinnamon, junkets, fruits and tarts.” Even so, this would have been a mere snack for Louis XIV of France who was, of course, anything but a saint. However, this monarch maintained the honour of his sainted forebear and namesake by consuming, as a ‘light repast’, “four plates of different soups, an entire pheasant, a partridge, a large plateful of salad, a leg of mutton cut up in its juices with garlic, two good pieces of ham, a plateful of cakes, fruits and jams”. His mistress, Madame de Maintenon, remarked that if she ate half as much as he did, she would be dead within a week. He never used a

fork, but always wore his hat at table, as court etiquette demanded. As he was unfailingly

polite to the ladies, whenever one of them ventured near him whilst he was eating, he invariably raised it, thereby depositing upon it some portion of whatever he happened to be eating at the time. The result was an increasingly greasy brim, which kept the court hatter in useful employ. He can never have eaten a hot meal. His food was borne in solemn state from the palace kitchens, preceded by a phalanx of palace guards. As it was carried along, a gentleman usher called ‘the King’s Meat’, at which all the courtiers doffed their hats and bowed. When it finally reached the king, it was tasted, whilst his brother, Philippe, Duc d’Orleans, stood by with the royal napkin, a necessity as the king regarded forks with some suspicion as being capable of carrying poison. Even on campaign, his table was not allowed to go short.

In 1667 when he was besieging Lille, its defender, the Compte de Brouais, discovered that the king was without ice. Accordingly, he sent him a supply every morning. When the king

requested more, he politely replied that he would like to oblige, but as the siege was likely to last for some time his supplies were limited. When

Louis died, his intestines were found to be twice the length of the average man’s.

His aversion to forks was shared by Elizabeth 1st of England, who received one as a New Year’s gift in 1582, but who considered it as being fit only for fops and jackanapes. She often ate alone (she suffered from bad teeth due to her inordinate consumption of sugar) but this did not detract from the ceremonial which surrounded her repasts. A German visitor at Greenwich in 1598 wrote that whilst the queen was still at prayer, noble ‘Gentlemen of the Rod’ bore in the saltcellar and other ornaments, which they placed on the royal table, then knelt before it. Ladies of the court followed “to rub the plates with bread and salt, with as much awe as if the queen herself had been

present”. Yeomen of the Guard then entered “clothed in scarlet…bringing in at each turn a course of twenty four dishes served in plate, most of it gilt”. “Twelve trumpets and two kettledrums made the hall ring for half an hour” whilst servants tasted the dishes for poison. At that point the queen decided not to leave her apartments, so a group of ladies of the court took selected viands to be consumed in private! But if the Court dined in such fine style, it was merely carrying on a fine tradition. In 1467 when George Neville was enthroned as Archbishop of York,

the ‘removes’ consisted of “300 huge loaves of bread, 300 tuns of ale (about 75,000 gallons), 100 tuns of wine, 105 oxen, 6 wild bulls, 1000 sheep, 304 pigs, 304 calves, and 400 swans.” It took sixty two cooks to prepare the meal.

here are many Indian restaurants on the Coast and unfortunately the majority are struggling.

Masala is not one of them. Full to bursting almost every day with an extremely popular terrace and garden in the summer, this is more than your average Costa del Sol curry house.

Only open since the end of 2011, the restaurant’s star has been in the ascendant ever since. Known by many as the best Indian eatery West of Puerto Banus with high quality at reasonable prices, it is conveniently located opposite the Crowne Plaza hotel.

Owner Hanza works tirelessly to keep his happy customers happier, and will design dishes around spice preference. He runs a tight ship: his staff are extremely courteous and attentive and chef Kuldeep Singht has 22 years of experience, having worked in India, Japan and Germany prior to arriving in Spain 7 years ago.

COSTA CUISINE Being a huge fan of Indian food, I was impressed by the variety of regional styles, with seafood and soft flavouring from the South and the more traditional Tandoori and curry styles to keep the crowds happy.

We started with a stunning fish tikka harilyali that had been marinated in green masala and cooked in the Tandoor. This was beautiful, with typically aromatic seasoning from the Kerala region of India, not too hot with a subtle herb infusion that complemented the salmon perfectly.

We also tried a banno chicken kebab cooked in yoghurt and herbs with a soft and creamy paneer. The sauce was stunning, a well balanced blend of cardamom and saffron with cashew nuts.

I always like to test restaurants on their interpretations of favourite dishes and in this case the onion bhajis were perfect; lovely and crunchy with a soft and tangy onion filling.

The vegetarian option was an inventive papadum roll with mixed vegetables; a softly textured wrap with a spring-roll-like filling. This was a satisfying autumnal dish with just the right amount of heat to make it interesting.

So far, so softly spiced. Time to bring out the chillis and we were not disappointed. Chilli does not have to mean obstructively hot, it is a question of using spice to enhance flavour and the main courses reflected this perfectly. The chicken tikki masala had been cooked in their clay oven and was smokey and rich.

The chef´s speciality was a garlic chilli chicken dish with robust seasoning without being overpowering. And finally for those who prefer a little less sauce and a lower fat option, we were served a chicken bhuna cooked in its own juices for a deep strong flavour.

Masala provides an impressive repertoire of dishes in a friendly and relaxed environment, and I have it on good authority that the Cobra beers continue to be served well into the early hours of the morning; what more could you ask?

Same La Sala vibe with an added twist of Spanish tradition and flavours

he Costa del Sol has a new venue. Like its big sister in Puerto Banus, el Rincón de la Sala is destined for serious success. Small but perfectly formed, this San Pedro site offers dining, drinks, light bites for the after-work brigade, breakfasts and a family-friendly lounge. It has been full every day since its launch in early October and it’s easy to see why; brilliant Continental design, valet parking and friendly staff, El Rincón has an electrifying vibe that is hard not to pick up on.

We were lucky enough to be joined at the chef’s table by a fantastic group of guests. Dr. Kai O. Kaye, owner of Ocean Clinic, the Coast’s most famous centre for plastic surgery and contribu-

tor to SOCIETY’s amazing Marbella Makeover, John May of Quay Properties, a high-end bespoke construction company, Mark Crossley, head of private clients for IIG, a boutique wealth management business based in Gibraltar and Andrew Forbes, the freelance travel writer, blogger and PR. Chef Manuel de la Chica Malpica, formerly of Dani Garcia’s excellent La Moraga, had prepared a variety of brasserie favourites for us, which suited the venue to perfection. We started with a selection from their tapas menu, all attractively presented on warm grey slates. Smoked salmon with capers, marinated soy tuna cubes

and boquerones fritos with ali oli were all mouthwatering as well as pleasing to the eye. Trying not to ask Dr. Kai which treatments he would recommend for each of us, we passed the slates around the table, rather like a self service cocktail party without the cocktails.

Conversation turned to how impressed we all were with the restaurant. The chef and his team work in a glassfronted kitchen and their industrious professionalism is a pleasure to watch.

The chef’s table is a great concept, allowing diners to be up close and personal with the kitchen, making you feel an integrated part of the action. It reflects the concept of El Rincón as a whole; a multi sensory experience and a lifestyle choice that allows its guests to relax and enjoy the ride.

On to main courses next and we enjoyed a mix of traditional Spanish dishes fused with some modern European touches. The Iberian pork, such a staple dish of the region, had been cooked slowly leaving it beautifully tender. Coated in a tangy marinade, the dish was attractively presented in small portions and perfect for sharing.

The highlight for most of us was the sea bass; baked attached to its crispy skin and served with a creamy risotto, which was stunningly enhanced with a subtle touch of goats cheese and accompanied by crunchy asparagus tips. Our compliments were passed the short distance to the chef, who came over to have a chat and explained his desire to offer quality to all of his classic dishes at affordable prices.

He suggested we try the rabo de toro, or oxtail stew, one of his specialities,

and one of the most emblematic dishes of Andalucian cuisine. Using a recipe passed down through his family, the stew was earthy and rich with the meat falling off the bone after probable hours of slow cooking.

To finish off, we couldn’t resist trying the brownie which was heavenly, really moist and not too rich. To make ourselves feel slightly less guilty, we also tried the fruit carpaccio which was palate cleansing and fresh.

The full menu is redolent of the ever popular and unmodish brasserie style that works so well in other countries and it is a breath of fresh air to see something so classic and modern in such a traditional area. El Rincón is a venue that is staged to perfection and feels like a real investment in the up and coming future of San Pedro, a charming town which deserves to be put on the map. lasalasanpedro.com

ADANA, (Association for the Rights of Abandoned Animals) an animal charity on the Costa del Sol run entirely by volunteers, aims to provide facilities for the shelter and care of abandoned, sick and injured animals, assisting the local authorities and promoting understanding, respect and affection for animals. Each month, SOCIETY MARBELLA will share with you a small selection of the dogs and cats housed at ADANA, looking for a new home.

2751 LUCY and 2753 CHARLOTTE When the owner of a shelter in Competa suddenly passed away, all of the dogs faced an uncertain future. Luckily, several shelters along the coast stepped in to help re-home all the animals until such time as homes can be found. Lucy and Charlotte are two of the seven dogs taken in by ADANA. Both are female Podencos. Lucy is very timid but gentle and sweet, aged around three to four years. Charlotte, the chocolate one, is around 18 months old and is playful, friendly and confident around people.

Both would make fantastic pets. Podencos tend to be very loyal, gentle creatures, almost feline-like in their elegance.

Currently, ADANA are inundated with puppies! This is Angel, one of five very cute Podenco cross puppies who were born to a wild mother in Manilva. Poor little Angel has a large scar on her back from an injury that occurred before she was taken to the kennels. She is such a pretty faced girl - don’t you just want to adopt her?

2449 DAISY

Daisy got so skinny that the kennels were desperately worried about her at one point. One of the dedicated volunteers decided to take her home and look into her problem. After a course of tablets to regulate her enzyme production, Daisy started to put on weight and look healthy again. She is now back in the kennels, a calmer, fatter Daisy, looking healthy in body and mind. She is now ready to be homed; a fantastic dog who would just love to have someone to call her own.

FAMA’s policy is to never put a healthy dog down. This is Lisa, an adorable Yorkshire Terrier pup aged two years old. She was taken to FAMA from the Paraiso with a very matted coat, but has since been clipped and bathed. She is very well natured, showing no aggression to other people or dogs. She will make someone a fantastic family pet; a beautiful little Yorkshire Terrier anyone would be proud to own. A fundraising art auction at the British School of Marbella has raised €833 for a children’s charity. More than 100 pupils, aged from two to nine, swapped pencils for paintbrushes during the school’s Art Week to create the paintings and artwork. They were then auctioned off with some parents bidding up to €100 per piece! Head Mistress Sian Kirkham explained, “the art work this year was of an exceptionally high standard, and although I am delighted with the generosity of our ever-supportive parent body, the children’s work is certainly worth every cent.” The money is being donated to the Muir Maxwell Trust, a paediatric epilepsy charity that supports children and their carers.

An early autumn, crystal clear sunny day at the southern end of the Costa del Golf was enjoyed by another plentiful turnout of players for El Rincon de La Sala Opening Day Golf Challenge held at Almenara Golf Course last month. With stiff competition from all teams, it was the team of Aloha Nomads who came home the winners, with a great score of 82 points, winning a voucher for dinner at La Sala, together with a bottle of bubbly. Thanks to the generosity of all the competitors who entered the “Lost ball guesstimate” competition, together with those bidding on the auction items back at the prize-giving, over €700 euros was raised for the charity Debra, the Butterfly Skin Children’s Association.
