They think it’s all over... The winter World Cup bought and paid for by a tiny desert country kicked off with FIFA president Gianni Infantino seeking to deflect pertinent corruption questions by comparing himself to migrant workers due to his once having ginger hair. If this wasn’t provocative enough, he then decided to implement a stadium beer ban for ‘ordinary fans’... great work Gianni! but he wasn’t finished, there was still time to outlaw inclusivity armbands, threatening to issue yellow cards for anyone who wore one! Let the fun begin! Five minutes in to the curtain raiser and Ecuador stun the home team with a goal, but wait... a threatened beheading and a brown envelope later VAR decide to disallow the goal causing a stray Ecuadorian sitting amongst the locals to remonstrate and be quickly “disappeared”, never to be seen again. This World Cup was going to be right up there competing with Epstein’s friend list at the end of season “corruption” awards.

Closer to home and the most wonderful time of the year desperately needs a cold snap to kick in as we still enjoy spring like temperatures. Hopefully our December cover and a trip to the Málaga lights will help get you in the mood for the festivities. Will Ferrell, rose to international fame when he played Buddy in the iconic 2003 Christmas film, Elf.

The film and entertainment studio Warner Bros., who own the rights to Buddy, recently licensed the beloved character to Asda for their latest Christmas advert, which is made of blended footage from the original movie and newly filmed scenes. The ad features Will dressed as Buddy arriving at an Asda store to trial as a seasonal recruit enlisted to help with the busy period in the runup to Christmas. Though Will’s latest appearance as Buddy has sent fans of the popular Christmas film wondering if he would return to the role, the comedic actor played down expectations sharing, ‘No, I think that would look strange, a 55-year-old man running around in tights. I think Elf is its own entity.’ However, talking of the film’s success, Will shares, “No, I’m extremely flattered - when I think and talk about Elf and think about from when we shot the movie, and I literally had moments on that set thinking this could be the last movie I ever make in the sense that: ‘Oh, is anyone going to think this is funny? Is this just going to be weird? A guy running around as an elf? And to see where it’s gone to and how it’s become part of the zeitgeist for holidays, whether it’s in the States or the UK, it’s incredible.”

Born in 1967 in Irvine, California, Will is the oldest son of Righteous Brothers keyboardist Lee Ferrell and teacher Kay Ferrell. Unlike his comedic characters, Will was studious and somewhat quiet during his student years, choosing to make his mark on the football field, where he set a school record for most field goals made. Upon graduation in 1986, Ferrell attended the University of Southern California at Los Angeles, where he joined the Delta Tau fraternity and pursued a degree in sports journalism.

Inappropriate behaviour makes me laugh

After his graduation in 1989, Ferrell got his first taste of the NBC television world as an intern for the network’s sports department. This was where he had an epiphany about where his true talents lay. Shortly afterwards, Ferrell moved back home with his parents. Will launched his career in comedy as a member of the Los Angeles-based improv group The Groundlings. Here, he polished his impersonation skills and caught a few TV breaks, earning guest spots on sitcoms like Fox’s Living Single and ABC’s Grace Under Fire.

In August 2000, Ferrell married his long-time girlfriend, Viveca Paulin, a Swedish-born art auctioneer. Both big dog lovers, they cared for three canines before plunging into parenthood with the birth of their son Magnus in March 2004. Mattias, arrived in December 2006, and their third son, Axel, was born in January 2010.

A producer for Saturday Night Live saw The Groundlings perform and asked Ferrell to audition for the show. He joined Saturday Night Live in 1995 staying on until 2002. Following his departure Will became one of the film industry’s biggest comedic draws through off-colour hits like Old School, the aforementioned, Elf and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

However, after Elf, Ferrell eventually found it difficult to sustain the impressive success he enjoyed early in his film career. His 2008 features SemiPro and Step Brothers both failed to impress viewers.

Ferrell returned to familiar territory with Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013) and Zoolander 2 (2016). He also starred in The Lego Movie (2014) and delivered his signature over-the-top comedy with original characters in The Campaign (2012), Daddy’s Home (2015) and The House (2017). The success of Daddy’s Home led to a holiday-themed sequel in 2017, with veteran actors Mel Gibson and John Lithgow joining Ferrell alongside the first instalment’s co-star, Mark Wahlberg.

In 2007, Ferrell teamed with writers Adam McKay and Chris Henchy to launch Funny or Die, a streaming video site that offered viewers the chance to vote on whether they liked the short clips presented. Two years later, Ferrell reprised his SNL impersonation of the outgoing president for a one-man Broadway show called You’re Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush. In early 2019, Ferrell tapped into his popular Anchorman character with the launch of The Ron Burgundy Podcast.

Will returns this season in a new festive flick, Spirited, a modern musical rendition of Charles Dickens’s classic A Christmas Carol. The film includes several original songs from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the songwriting team behind The Greatest Showman. Will Ferrell takes on the role of The Ghost of Christmas Present and Ryan Reynolds stars as Clint Briggs, the modern-day Scrooge on the receiving end of a yuletide haunting. Octavia Spencer stars as Clint’s coworker Kimberly, Mr Robot star Sunita Mani plays The Ghost of Christmas Past, and acclaimed Broadway performer Patrick Page is The Ghost of Jacob Marley. FRENCH MONTANA –Coke Boys 6

French Montana shares his sixth instalment of his Coke Boys mixtape series, and the project is set to arrive with a heap of special guest features. The new release will feature the full Coke Boys crew, Max B Chinx, Stove God, T Dot, Chinese Kitty, D, Thang, Cheese, and Kenzo B. French teased the project back in October, tweeting, “Who y’all wanna hear on coke boys 6?” The mixtape announcement also comes just five months after the “Unforgettable” rapper released his collaborative LP with Harry Fraud entitled, Montega which featured singles “Keep It Real” with EST Gee and Rushmore Pack.

We just kept writing good songs. They had a great vibe and an enthusiasm, and a hunger.”

Country-pop hitmaker Shania Twain is set to receive a huge honour at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards. ‘I’m so incredibly honoured to be named ‘Music Icon’ she shared. ‘I have some of the greatest fans in the world,” she continued. “They have supported me since the early days, and it’s their love and passion that keeps me going.” Speaking on behalf of the People’s Choice Awards, Cassandra Tyron, noted the important impact Twain has had on the music industry. “Shania has paved the way for many multi-genre artists throughout her impressive career as the ‘Queen of Country Pop,’” she explained in the press release. “Her music has withstood the test of time and her fans have multiplied over the years. We are delighted to honour her with this award and can’t wait to see her perform some of her greatest hits.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s highly anticipated docu-series from Oscar-nominated director Liz Garbus is heading to Netflix this month. In September 2020 the Duke and Duchess of Sussex signed a landmark deal with Netflix to produce content that would include documentaries, docu-series, movies, scripted shows and children’s content. Speaking earlier in the year on the docuseries, Meghan shared, “It’s nice to be able to trust someone with our story — a seasoned director whose work I’ve long admired — even if it means it may not be the way we would have told it. But that’s not why we’re telling it. We’re trusting our story to someone else, and that means it will go through their lens.” The Duke and Duchess have previously been spotted with a film crew in New York, while the footage will possibly also include behind-the-scenes shots at their Californian home.

Only months after his relationship with Kim Kardashian came to an end, Pete Davidson has been spotted with Emily Ratajkowski. While the relationship is fresh, it’s clear some sort of connection has been made. Back in September, Emily filed for divorce from Sebastian BearMcClard after four years of marriage. In a recent interview, Jennifer Aniston shared how “hard” she found it to have so much media speculation around whether she would have children, at a time she was privately undergoing IVF treatment. “I was trying to get pregnant. It was a challenging road for me, the babymaking road,” she explained. “All the years and years and years of speculation... It was really hard. I was going through IVF, drinking Chinese teas, you name it. I was throwing everything at it. I would’ve given anything if someone had said to me, ‘Freeze your eggs. Do yourself a favour’. You just don’t think it. So here I am today. The ship has sailed. I have zero regrets,” she then insisted. “I actually feel a little relief now because there is no more, ‘Can I? Maybe. Maybe. Simon Cowell has credited his son with saving his life after he became “obsessed” with work. The music mogul, responsible for TV hits, Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor, has admitted to being “really unhappy” until Eric, his son with fiancée Lauren Silverman, was born eight years ago. “Before Eric, my life was 99 per cent work — I was obsessed with it,” the 63-year-old shared. “I got to that point where everything was about, ‘If you’re not rating against this then you’re a failure’ and I stopped enjoying what I was doing and I was miserable the whole time. “I was really unhappy. But now Eric is around, I don’t work through the night anymore. If he hadn’t come along, God knows what would have happened.”

GONE TOO SOON

Aaron Carter, the American musician and former child star died last month at just 34 years old. Aaron started his music career in his early years, supporting the Backstreet Boys on tour and releasing his self-titled debut album at the age of nine. The album sold a million copies worldwide and peaked at number 12 in the UK.

Aaron’s brother, Nick Carter, shared a heartbreaking tribute to his younger brother following his death stating that his love for his sibling will, “never ever faded”, despite them having “a complicated relationship”. “I will miss my brother more than anyone will ever know. I love you Chizz, now you get a chance to finally have some peace you could never find here on earth. God, Please take care of my baby brother,” he shared.

As Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse (Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook) continues to haemorrhage revenue and announce thousands of layoffs, TikTok continues its ascent . It is now the go-to platform for influencers and brands to promote products and services. Luxury goods companies are collaborating with creators, influencers and celebrities are doing paid promotions, while other brands are masters at marketing and becoming creative with their content. Tiktok is currently the third largest social media platform of the “big five”, which include Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and Twitter, in that order. TikTok’s revenue is increasing rapidly, 142% year-on-year, and it is expected to reach 1.8 billion users by the end of the year, impressive considering it is only six years old. The short-form videos and clever algorithm, which picks up on users’ interests, appeal to Generation Z (ages 9 – 24) with their insatiable appetite for instant consumption, online consumerism and their ability to digitally interact. Brands are getting ahead in modern marketing by staying relevant and posting regularly. The evolution of the world’s hippest platform has happened in record time and is having an unprecedented impact on popular culture.

Chipotle Mexican Grill is an American fast-food chain producing online content just as hot as its sauce. The company has been posting on the platform for three years and has 2 million followers and over 45 million likes. People videoed themselves flipping a burrito bowl, which drove a record number of people to download the Chipotle app and order food for delivery. TikTok users like to film challenges and upload the results; it has become part of the platform’s modus operandi for either campaigns or trends.

Founded in 2003, Teen Vogue has discovered the ideal platform for its demographic; its TikTok account has 1.4 million followers and over 10 million likes. The teen team have been using TikTok for worthy causes such as helping teenagers figure out whom they are; helping them grasp gender identity and sexual orientation. Alongside other issues that matter to its audience, Teen Vogue takes a behind-the-scenes look at its cover stars and advises on styling tips. They use social media as an extension of their brand and content. Videos that have recently been posted include anything from political activism for Gen Z about the mid-term elections in America to musician Phoebe Bridgers talking about her the muses in her life. The account also teases previews of upcoming articles for the magazine, encouraging its audience to become its readers too.

The V&A Museum

If you think that museums are stuffy and dull, think again! The iconic and legendary Victoria & Albert Museum is now on social media raising brand awareness and appealing to a whole new audience. Flipping the tables, performers and dancers appeared at the V&A in a TikTok takeover this year, as part of an online dance challenge in the gallery, it was a world away from the exhibitions taking place when the museum was founded in 1852. The V&A isn’t the only historic place to use the platform, other museums around the globe have accounts on the app too. The museum has created cheeky (literally) content with its “Bums of the V&A” video, other frivolous and playful videos include alternative art history lessons and digital vandalism, making history accessible and relevant to a young audience. The account has over 74K followers and over 2 million likes; the innovative marketing and social media team have catapulted the museum into a new era.

Getting fit is fun and stylish with Gymshark, a British company selling men’s and women’s fitness apparel and accessories online. With an estimated net worth of £1 billion, the fitness clothing brand has 3.8 million followers on its TikTok account, garnering over 60 million likes. After successfully posting on Instagram and gaining followers, Gymshark jogged over to TikTok, where the company was able to expand its reach. The secret to its success? Utilising creators and influencers that resonate with Gen Z. Rather than collaborating with huge TikTok stars, the brand chose wisely and decided upon those with a high engagement rate. The account also incorporates user-focused trending content, challenges and giveaways, using hashtags to boost followers. The success of its “Change Your Life” campaign on the app reflects in the engagement rate of its posts. The brand also injects a bit of humour into its videos, being sure not to take working out too seriously.

As Christmas 2022 heaves into view, another frankly turbulent year nearly behind us and some truly frightening energy bills still ahead of us, we cautiously loosen the belts we’ve spent months tightening, preparing for the onslaught of booze and cheese.... and friends and family bearing booze and cheese.

Nevertheless, Santa might be finding something other than the traditional glass of whiskey left out this year as the rise of popularity in NOLO snowballs. What’s NOLO? No relation to YOLO (you only live once) or POLO (mint with a hole / toff on a horse), NOLO is the marketing friendly catch-all for No alcohol or low alcohol drinks. It doesn’t quite work as an acronym but if you’re drunk you probably won’t notice and if you don’t drink, you’ll be so thankful to be offered something other than a lime and soda you’ll likely forgive it.

According to alcohol education charity Drinkaware, more and more of us are opting to stay off the sauce on a night out, with 29% of pub visits and 37% of restaurant meals now estimated to be alcohol-free affairs. Whilst alcohol consumption (at least at home) sky-rocketed during the rigours of the pandemic, a new, more vociferous move towards temperance simultaneously emerged, albeit one which had been brewing for some

time. As we’ve become increasingly aware of and candid about our mental health in recent years, the link between alcohol consumption and depression, anxiety and psychosis has been better appreciated and reinforced to the pint that most people site their mental health as the main reason for giving up or curbing their alcohol intake. For many, it took a deadly global pandemic to really galvanize their attention on both their mental and physical health. Whilst some grinning upstarts might have spent furlough learning a new language and getting a six pack via Joe Wicks workouts, many of us, too stressed or bored to speak were simply crushing six packs and munching takeouts, dimly aware we were merely exacerbating an already colossal mental health challenge.

As the pendulum gradually swings back towards “normality” (devastating climate change, international conflict, spiralling inflation, over-priced amenities, lying politicians.... and Ant and Dec feeding them kangaroo bollocks on national television....) there’s a renewed focus on looking after the one thing we still have some control over – ourselves (for the most part anyway!) Perhaps the leaders in this movement are the young, with 26% of 16-24 year olds canvassed staunchly teetotal. Whether it’s the sheer cost of a night out or their maturation in

a society where health risks are well documented and your online image is paramount, Gen Z are more reluctant to cut loose, lest they lose control. Plus they’ll do anything to differentiate themselves from the boozy boomers!

Even pre-pandemic, NOLO beer was exploding in popularity as the craft craze pivoted to ensnare the sober set. Though 0% stalwarts Becks and Carlsberg saw significant drops, overall the UK market surged 58% from 2019 to 2020 as the diversification of choice coincided with the evolution of discourse and the improved public image of NOLO. More big breweries waded into the fray, able to offer additional benefits such as vegan and gluten free drinks or vitamin supplements and immuno-boosters as they captured more of the emerging ethical and health-conscious customer base.

Alongside recently-launched alcohol-free versions of giants Guinness, Budweiser and Stella Artois, supermarket shelves now stock NOLO wines, Prosecco (“ Nosecco”), aperitifs and even spirits.

I am the founder of the Marble Modeling Course. I produce video commercials and scout for models on Costa del Sol. The idea of the course came with the demand of fresh faces who may require guidance to achieve success in the modeling world.

I was born into a family of fashion designers and started my modeling career when I was 15. After a while, I swapped behind the camera and found myself as a video producer. I even made it to the MA in Documentary Filmmaking!

I’m in charge of the programme, gathering the team of professionals and welcoming new models to the course!

I have extensive experience working with professional modeling agencies in Europe, USA and Israel. For novice models on our course I will not only create a diverse and beautiful portfolio, but I will also provide a few tips of the modeling business.

Anna Rose is a brand new swimwear brand featuring fun, colourful and comfortable pieces aimed to make women all around the world feel confident and sexy. Along side the brand, owner Anna Rosen also works as a model, and will assist the new modeling project with posing, walking for fashion shows, and polaroid photos. Anna Rose will be releasing a brand new underwear collection in March 2023.

I am a health chef specialising in a plantbased cuisine. I will be happy to educate aspiring models about nutrition and rise their interest about healthy cooking that will inspire them to keep up the healthy habits throughout their modeling journey. Currently, I work with businesses by creating healthy recipes and menus, and individuals by helping them make a switch to a more wellness-towarded lifestyle and eating.

ON TOP OF THE WORLD

IFBB star, Kamila Pardamcova, rounded off an amazing year with the top honour of ‘2022 World Champion Bikini Fitness’. The multiple titleholder joins us at Society Marbella this month to talk about her journey to date, her move to Marbella and future plans.

Tell us about your background in bodybuilding?

I started weight training when I was 18. As a child, I was often ill and always in and out of hospitals. When I reached my teens, I made the conscious decision to involve myself in sport, in order to get healthier, stronger and just be able to run around like a normal child.

I dabbled with bodybuilding and then moved onto Tae-kwon-do, where I found my inner beast and discovered my strengths. I participated in several tournaments and fought for my country. I then moved to UK and decided to use my energy and enthusiasm in the health and fitness industry to become a Body Pump instructor. I also received my Personal Training Diploma in UK. I love what I do, it is no longer a career for me but a lifestyle!

In terms of body building titles, I have won every single title there is to win in the IFBB. I took part in 18 International shows this year and out of those, I won 15 Gold / First Place and 3 Silver/ 2nd Place. So, it was a phenomenal year for me.

What has been your greatest moment in the sport?

My highlight was winning the World Champion Title. This is extremely difficult, as only the best of the best compete head on for this. When I started competing I never in a million years thought this was possible for me. This

year I faced my fears and challenges. I broke all my records and eclipsed my wildest dreams.

What is a normal day in your life when you are preparing for a competition?

On a normal day of my prep life, I wake up at 7.30am and first things first… I have two espressos with my supplements. Then I begin my cardio, which takes around an hour. Next, I like to have a quick cold shower and enjoy my breakfast before heading to the gym. I train my clients, eat my lunch and then it’s ‘my time’. This means a weight training session, before going home to practice my posing / routine, as well as deal with my online clients. I always do another hour of cardio at night before dinner, followed by a cold shower again and then relax with my cat.

How would you describe your diet?

My diet is extreme. It can be the toughest thing in my chosen lifestyle. Sometimes, after eating my

meal, I am already counting the hours before I can eat again, as the meal hasn’t satisfied my hunger. The days prior to the competition, I cut water, salt and carbohydrates. This is when you really start to feel the diet hitting you hard. You can break down with exhaustion, hunger, negative thoughts, doubt... This is the most difficult part of the prep life. You become emotional, ‘hangry,’ over tired, full of adrenaline and you look like death. On the upside you are excited to see your body change each day.

Do you take any supplements?

YES INDEED I DO! I take a lot of supplements from A to Z, be it homeopathic, herbal or vitamins and minerals.

Do you stay in shape year-round?

NO! It is impossible to stay stage ready throughout the year. When I am off season, I typically gain about 14kgs above my stage weight. This is purely from the excess food I am consuming plus a bit of the good life.

What future plans do you have?

I am currently working on building up my online business.

What training and nutrition methods gave you the greatest bodybuilding results?

Listening to my body and not fighting it. Getting lots of rest, when I can. Sleep plays an important role. Eating clean. Not being afraid to eat carbohydrates, I have spent my life thinking carbohydrates were not good for me.

What separates a champion from the rest?

To become a champion one needs to be completely focused and dedicated. The keywords and phrases to this are: consistency, commitment, hard work, dedication, go the extra mile, push beyond your boundaries, tears, pain, hunger for success, want it more than anything else.

How do you balance your personal life with bodybuilding?

To be a champion, you have to make a lot of sacrifices, be it on a personal or social level. I have no other life as I dedicated 2022 to becoming the best version I could be. I live, breathe and eat BIKINI FITNESS. To let off steam, you will often see me on the Paseo, walking and doing my cardio, whilst enjoying the fresh air, the sunshine and listening to the waves.

As a personal trainer, what would be your best advice to people wanting to

get in shape?

Be realistic. Set achievable goals. Start with a goal of maybe working out twice a week. Then you will see if you have the time and motivation to do more and this will fuel your motivation. If you over-aim, thinking you will train five times a week, but only manage two, you will disappoint yourself and kill your own motivation. Then you give up your journey before you even got started. It's better to be positively surprised by over achieving your goals, rather than being disappointed not achieving them.

Why did you choose Marbella as your base?

What’s not to LOVE about Marbella? I have lived in many different cities and I find MARBELLA to be the one that that suits me the most. The quality of lifestyle, fresh air, beautiful landscape and constant sunshine throughout the year. Each season is different and I welcome each change. Marbella is my home and I love it.

The Cannabis Culture

It’s the month of December, and whilst I will admit the sea breeze has felt a little chilly at times, the weather has still been absolutely marvellous. As I write this article, I am currently soaking up the sun and enjoying the views overlooking Playa Padre, whilst I roll from my selection of exquisite flowers at my new favourite cannabis association, The Botanical Marbella.

Cannabis is not just a plant, but a whole culture and TLE CBD is just one component of this crazy cannabis world. I love the plant and everything it can do for humanity. Not only referring to its health benefits, but the positive impact it has on the planet too. However, whilst I have enjoyed learning about its amazing history, I still struggle to understand why the government banned this plant in the first place. Furthermore, why we are still having to endeavor legislation issues on a daily basis, when there are enough hard facts to justify its use medically?

Working with natural therapies like energy healing, I understand the importance of nature and how it can be beneficial for people in their daily lives. Using the whole plant as a medicine and incorporating it with other therapies which help you disconnect from the modern world, can truly benefit a person.

Having spent the last six years working with cannabinoids has fundamentally changed my view on the current healthcare system and I realise there is a need to have CBD as another option for doctors to utilise. The importance of obtaining research and clinical studies is how we need to move forward, and this need to be done by testing how the plant works for particular illnesses. I have witnessed the positive effects it has on conditions from migraines, stress, severe anxiety, epilepsy, ADD, ADHD, dementia, and cancers, to name a few.

Social Clubs and the Cannabis Scene

Education is the key to changing people’s opinion about cannabis. This can sometimes be challenging, especially with the older generation who have heard the stories in the 1960’s and the propaganda created by the FDA.

The cannabis world used to mainly include ‘shady’ characters or far out hippies. Nowadays, it’s a flourishing scene with more associations popping up along the coast. There is no denying

Years ago, when I first walked into a cannabis social club, I couldn’t have been more nervous. The vibe at the entrance was, ‘Enter at Your Own Risk,’ and the paranoid staff with their suspicious glances made me feel even more uncomfortable. Well those days are finally in the past. The welcoming team at ‘Botanical Marbella’ filled me with joy. Your first impression is a lasting one, so being greeted with smiles and a friendly attitude is incredible important. This place understands the needs of our community. I was thrilled to learn about their current fundraising events, giving to local charities, whilst promoting a positive atmosphere.

The staff were eager to learn about the latest discoveries in medical cannabis. I explained about the advantages of using cannabinoids in relation to health and showed the team the recent research carried out in Israel by Dedi Meiri in regards to cannabis flowers potentially helping fight specific types of cancer. The day slipped away as we prepped edibles whilst discussing how we could improve the experience of the cannabis user as whole. Understanding there is a need to change the publics perception is the most fundamental important tool for our industry.

CBD is great compound, as it has no psychoactive effects and therefore a first time user can feel safe in the knowledge that they will have positive experience.

THC. on the other hand, can make you feel high, which is sometimes a concern, although this psychoactivity can be necessary for eliminating pain and stressful thoughts.

You can find a whole range of cannabis goodies from flowers to chocolates which you can try by ‘donating’ to the club. The staff will be able to guide you, to help you on your first cannabis journey. This is the future of medicine, let your endocannabinoid system benefit from the soothing effects of its cannabinoids in your body.

CBD has now turned Crypto

The Cannabis community struggles with legal issues and banking. Cannabis can still cause many companies problems, as it is illegal in the current system. This has lead our industry leaders to search for other solutions to deposit their hard earned money. One of the companies who really impressed me at the recent Barcelona World CBD awards were winners Greenheart CBD. Paul Walsh, the founder, explained to me about the creation of WEB 3 community and how this new metaverse was the answer to our universal cannabis banking problem. The CBD coin they have created will be the beginning of a revolution in our sector. Eradicating the need for currency and replacing it with a whole interactive community system, where the buyers exchange crypto for cannabis goods.

This also means that farming with their winning latest AI technology, can reduce CO2 emissions, so cultivating cannabis has never been greener. By growing more hemp for the medical community, as well as for infrastructure and finished goods, it will positively help the planet pave a way to more sustainable future. What does the job entail?

Administration regarding Mojo Sharing, such as the decisive distribution rounds (which owners get which weeks a year); taking care of logistics such as check-in/check-out, organising cleaning, maintenance and invoices; communicating and meeting with clients; following up on our Mojo sharing Facebook groups; planning and organising with Mojo Rentals; reporting to builders regarding renovation projects; assisting with accounting tasks; attending shareholder meetings.

The Romans probably indulged in the same debate a long time before we arrived, but it’s still relevant. Where to live – near the beach or in the hills overlooking it. The Moors who remained after the Reconquista had no say in the matter: they were forced to live a certain distance inland. We have a choice. Most people immediately think of a beachside home when considering the purchase of a property on the Costa del Sol, but this being the best choice is not a given. There are, we believe, alternatives to suit allcomers.

But before getting down to the nitty gritty, we should first distinguish between spending a short holiday in a place and actually living there. The inconveniences of some noise, lack of privacy and overcrowding may well be worth putting up with for the benefit of central location or proximity to the beach, but only for a short vacation. One of the principal luxuries of any full-time residence is peace of mind.

Nothing about this debate is written in stone. You could be wealthy enough to have purchased a humungous

beachside plot that guarantees peace of mind at all times, or you may be the owner of a remote villa in the hills, only to find an adventure sports company

has been granted permission to build a motorbike track beside you. Or you may simply prefer the hustle and bustle of the surroundings of a beachside property.

BENEFITS OF BOTH

The benefits of an interior location are mostly self-evident: clean and healthy air, pristine environment, privacy, panoramic views, closeness to nature and the absence of crowds. Perhaps what is not self-evident is the beneficial effect of clean air on one’s health. Air on higher ground has fewer pollutants, and this affects blood cell levels, helping alleviate respiratory conditions like asthma and reducing depression.

The benefits of a beachside property are – obviously – the beach, closeness to the action, seaside views and easy access to shopping, health, entertainment and town centres. For many people, a home on the Costa del Sol means a home near the beach, and in any case, most residents with interior properties within short driving distance of the coast will go there frequently.

For what it’s worth, we asked colleagues in the property business to assess personality types with regard to clients in both camps, and generalising their comments, we came up with the following: mountain lovers tend to be more reserved, philosophical and creative. Beach lovers are generally more fun-loving, restless and extraverted.

But what if an interior location can also offer many of the advantages of a property near the beach? There are many quiet locations in the hills with all the water-sport facilities on your doorstep, and some of them happen to be no more than a few minutes’ drive inland. Vista Lago Residences is one such place.

Vista Lago is a luxury development of 18 individually designed villas in the hills just west of Marbella, built on one of the highest plots in the 200-hectare Real de la Quinta residential country club estate. With more trees planted than felled and a greater variety of native species than had been there before, the lake and its surroundings fit in perfectly with the Vista Lago philosophy of total respect for nature.

Needless to say, all variety of water sports can be practiced here, from paddle boarding and water biking to kayaking, canoeing and rowing, although for many residents, a swim in the clean and fresh water is luxury enough.

The balance is delicate, the choice ultimately subjective. Making your mind up is not easy. Beachside living is perfect for some people and not for others. Any decision with regard to location is purely personal, and we tend to make all life-changing decision in the sure knowledge that ultimately, life is a compromise.

his text is not really needed, just look at the photographs. Then think about this: how do UDesign keep doing it? How do they keep coming up with something different each time? The answer is that this is the nature of creativity, of constantly seeking new ways to design and build and create a work of art. And Villa Satori is one such work, a stunning property that pushes architecture and interior design to new heights.

Villa Satori was designed with an Art Deco flavour, evident in the whole and in the detail. The whole stairs, for example, is a work of Art Deco sculpture that lifts the spirit with its swirling shape standing free of any apparent support.

Almost all sofas have a sculptural quality to them. Even the island in the kitchen is a work of decorative sculpture, if somewhat minimalist in shape.

The use of natural materials, of wood against white walls and interior structures, the hanging lights, the beautiful columns that separate the entrance hall from

the lounge, allowing for line of sight right through to the terrace and beyond, becoming a feature in their own right when illuminated at night. The organic shapes result in few straight lines anywhere. Miami eat your heart out!

Two noticeable features of the villa become evident as soon as one goes through the main entrance. The first is the uninterrupted view straight through the lounge and over the terrace and pool. The second is the feeling of space in the

lounge and dining area itself, partly as a result of the columns we have already mentioned. They are built of the same material as the floor, thus creating total unity of colour and tone that unifies the entire visual impact. Any conflict of material is kept to a minimum, while the variety of materials used is limited in favour of overall unity of design.

The exceptional use of space in the main ground floor area is impressive, combining eating, lounging and television areas in one, with the kitchen located close enough to become, in reality, part of the same area. The advantage of this layout is allowing the host to communicate directly with his or her guests while working in the kitchen. This is a tried and trusted formula that UDesign have used frequently in many previous designs, and it works every time.

The lounge area being where it is, close to the dining and kitchen areas, means it gets used a lot more than in more traditional layouts. The big bar, a magnificent architectural feature of the space, is also key here. Guests are shown in, seated and offered a cocktail without breaking the flow of conversation between host and guest.

The huge sliding windows common to all UDesign villas mean that they open out to make an al fresco dining experience when weather permits. Hidden from view is a large butler’s kitchen, where more serious cooking and chopping – perhaps by a professional cook or caterer - can be done in total privacy.

And just look at the colours used all over the ground floor and main terrace: subtle blues and purples, warm browns and ochres and the occasional emerald green, all set perfectly against the more neutral tones of the walls, floors and ceilings. Colour is the orchestra we hear in our souls, in silence, while we seldom even think about it, and the orchestration must be fine-tuned for the whole to work to perfection.

Kisko Aroca brought an abstract technique to the collection, using uorescent colours that change depending on the observer's point of view. Alex Mañe invited us to re ect on the transformations that the world is undergoing with his paintings and Consuelo Buesa impressed us all with her Pop Art style. Furthermore, the young Matthew Gabler Lamb surprisesed us with an abstract guration that, due to its chromaticism, remindsed us of the great Miró. To complete this diverse exhibition, Javier Jiménez De Lara displayed the purest introspective style with a re ned surreal pictorial technique.

A DISTINCTIVE FAMILY LOOK IS CRITICAL IN DEFINING THE IDENTITY OF A CAR MANUFACTURER, AND FROM THE MOMENT THE WRAPS CAME OFF THE FULLY-DRIVEABLE, EU TYPEAPPROVED ZONDA C12 PROTOTYPE AT THE 1999 GENEVA AUTO SALON, THE PAGANI DNA WAS CLEARLY DEFINED.

This look has been further evolved for the Utopia, but instead of the active aerodynamic flaps at each corner of its main bodywork that were a unique feature of the Huayra, the Utopia reverts to a conventional fixed front splitter with a dedicated aerofoil profile in front. This works in conjunction with aerodynamic ducts integrated into the bodywork to aid both engine cooling and downforce at speed.

The active suspended aero elements at the rear are integrated into the upper part of the elliptical engine cover and rear wing. Electronically linked with the active suspension they help to create maximum downforce and optimise driving dynamics at all speeds.

Pagani is a pioneer in automotive carbon-fibre technologies, and uses cutting-edge second-generation Carbo-titanium HP62 and Carbo-Triax HP62 for the Utopia’s monocoque body construction. Both safety and structural rigidity benefit from the integrated rollover bar incorporated into the carbonfibre roof structure.

With an increase in torsional stiffness of 10.5% over the Huayra, this immensely strong safety cage allows the standard fitment of glazed roof panels to enhance the sense of light and space in the cabin.

Suspension is by forged aluminium alloy double-wishbones with coilovers all round. As before front and rear Chromium-Molybdenum alloy steel tubular subframes are bolted to the carbon-fibre tub, and carry the suspension, engine and gearbox.

Retardation is the province of the bespoke Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes whose six-pot callipers clamp massive 410mm vented front discs, with four-pot rear callipers acting on 390mm vented rear discs. Significant work was also put into directing cooling air at the brakes to maintain consistent stopping performance under hard use on track or the autobahn.

The angled outer fins of the APP Tech forged alloy wheels that help to extract hot air away from the discs are a

component of the dynamic brake cooling system as well.

Sized 21-inch in front and 22-inch at the rear they are wrapped in 265/35R21 and 325/30R22 Pirelli PZero Corsa tyres.

The cabin of a Pagani is where the real magic starts for the driver and passenger on whose visual, tactile and olfactory senses are fully engaged on their immediate surroundings. From single large components like the steering wheel, whose core is machined from a single block of aluminium and lovingly dressed in leather and carbon-fibre to individual switches each machined from solid aluminium, every exquisite detail has been designed and crafted to the highest possible level. Bucking the trend towards digital readouts, every instrument from the speedometer and rev counter to the oil temperature gauge is old school analogue and easy to read.

And so to the engine, the beating heart of every hypercar. Many years before Horacio Pagani penned the Zonda his old friend from Argentina, the motor racing legend Juan Manuel Fangio who raced for Mercedes in 1955 told him that if he ever thought of building his own car he had to use a Mercedes engine.

Fangio died in 1995 aged 84, but not

before he had introduced his young friend Horacio Pagani to Mercedes-Benz as promised, and this is how the Pagani Zonda was born with a version of the 6.0 litre V12 motor from the W140 Mercedes S-Class.

In 1998 Mercedes acquired a 51% of the independent Mercedes road and race preparation specialist AMG, completing its purchase of the company in 2005. As AMG continued to tune the V12 for its own models, increasing displacement. First to 7.0 litres and finally 7.3 litres, they also developed more radical versions for Pagani, whose mid-engine hypercars gave their engineers more freedom to play with intake, exhaust and camshaft modifications.

In 2011 the naturally-aspirated M120 V12 gave way to the M158 6.0 litre twin-turbo V12 specially developed for the Huayra by Mercedes-AMG. With a dry sump to lower engine height, this engine makes 740hp and 1,000 Nm of torque, which is a really big deal in a car weighing just 1,250kg.

Despite its improved crash safety features and structural stiffness the new Pagani Utopia weighs only 30kg more than its predecessor, and this is more than offset by the 864hp and 1,100Nm of torque from the latest version of the Mercedes-AMG bi-turbo V12 motor. The big news is that along with the Xtrac seven-speed Automated Manual Transmission, the Utopia is also offered with an Xtrac seven-speed manual gearbox.

From its roots in the original Pagani factory, which has now been re-designated as Art & Science Research Centre, the company now produces 50 cars a year in the new factory a couple of streets away.

On that score, just 99 Utopia Coupes will be made at 2.17 Million Euros each, and all are already spoken for. A Roadster version will arrive two years down the line once all the Coupes have been delivered.

From the young Argentinian engineer who returned to his father’s homeland of Italy in 1982, Horacio Pagani has turned out to be a visionary and a legend in his own time whose creations are revered by car enthusiasts around the world.

Every good building results from the inspired use of light, site and cadence. The form and spaces of the new Pagani Automobili S.p.A. factory near Modena in Italy make it abundantly clear that these tenets seeded its creation, with considerable love and attention to detail adding the finishing touches.

Inspired genius is the common thread that weaves itself through the pinnacle of art, sculpture, architecture and industrial design, so it was no surprise to learn that Horacio Pagani and his sons Christopher and Leonardo were responsible for the design of their new building.

Horacio also told me that the contractor who built his original factory a couple of streets away also constructed the new one. “There were two earthquakes in the Modena area in May 2012. The first measured 6.1 on the Richter scale and the second, a few days later was a 5.8,” he explained. “Many of the nearby buildings were damaged, but we did not have any problems, so the same contractor immediately got the job of building our new factory!”

A soaring structure with large glazed area on the entrance side giving the new factory an immediate impression of light and space, this building is a combination of the old and the new. Apart from ideas that came from the fertile minds of Horacio and his sons, part of the design inspiration was a historic castle near Florence owned by a Pagani client. Beyond that the steel frame mimics the techniques used to build the Eifel Tower, but uses chromed rivets in place of bolts.

On the one hand it carries references to the original Pagani HQ nearby with its internal brickwork, yet it is a beacon to the future with soaring double height spaces and a clear emphasis on the qualities of light, space and tranquillity that create an environment where creativity can thrive.

This is a building where very special cars are lovingly built by hand, and the inevitable automotive references are there with the roof struts evoking images of a racing car’s suspension.

Covering 5,760 sq. m (62,000 sq. ft) over two floors, the public side of the building is a double-height glazed atrium that extends in two directions away from the front entrance. To the left is the museum made up of a car collection that includes an open-wheeled racecar that Horacio built in his youth in his home country of Argentina, and a Lamborghini Countach Anniversary, the model he designed during his days at Lamborghini.

One very significant car that stands by itself next to the window is ‘La Nonna’ or ‘The Grandmother’ in Italian. “This is the second Zonda prototype that eventually covered over

one million kilometres in testing,” says Horacio proudly. The first prototype was sacrificed for crash testing. At the end of this line of cars is the full-size Huayra wooden buck that was built for design verification.

To the right-hand-side of the reception desk and waiting area is another glazed, double height space. This is the showroom and the new car delivery area where an opaque curtain screen can be raised to reveal a client’s new pride and joy during the handover presentation. Overlooking that space are the design offices and a conference room where the sales team help clients choose the specification of their new cars.

Another very important area on the upper floor is the carbon-fibre production room where components made from this super light and very strong material are

I noted that the ceiling in this room is timber clad. Apart from making the room look less clinical, this acts as an acoustic dampener for a healthier working environment.

Pagani does all its carbon-fibre work inhouse, and the huge autoclave machines next door are where even the largest parts of the cars structure are cured. A car-sized lift enables large sub-assemblies to be easily moved between floors.

For car enthusiasts however, the most fascinating part of the Pagani factory is the main production area where these incredible Hypercars are assembled. Overlooked from upstairs, this area was inspired by a typical Italian town square right down to the large traditional style clock mounted high up on a wall in one corner.

If you have ever been in a normal car factory, you will recall being handed eye and ear protection as these are noisy, highly regimented places with lots of automated machinery. The Pagani factory is the polar opposite, exuding a calm and tranquil atmosphere where highly skilled engineers and artisans assemble components that are either made on site like the carbon-fibre body, or sub-assembles that arrive from the likes of AMG in Germany who supply the Zonda’s V12 naturally-aspirated motor and the Huayra’s bi-turbo V12.

In alcoves off the main production ‘square’ technicians work on existing customer cars, and I saw various bespoke Zonda models undergoing maintenance or upgrades. In a far corner one of the amazing track-only Zonda R models was stripped down and awaiting attention.

Just as Horacio Pagani and his team make every single switch and knob on their cars in-house, the passion to design as much of their new factory as possible has resulted in a unique building that is a temple to Pagani’s cult of personality.

I had time for a proper tour of the building and was totally blown away by the attention to detail everywhere, even in the washrooms. This begins with the frosted glass doors emblazoned with the Pagani logo, and the door handles that mimic the cognac leather handles with white stitching and turned aluminium ends found on bespoke Pagani luggage. The Pagani identity runs deep here.

INSIDE THE WASHROOMS, VARNISHED CARBONFIBRE IS USED FOR THE SINKS AND CABINET WORKTOP, WITH THE ‘PAGANI ARTE’ LOGO ON ONE EDGE. THESE PIECES HAVE A WONDERFUL DEPTH TO THEIR FINISH, JUST LIKE THE NAKED CARBON FIBRE ON SOME OF PAGANI’S CARS.

On the subject of details, while it is quite normal for the diamond-shaped accent tile in the centre of four large floor tiles to be in a darker colour, when you look closely at the floor of the showroom and museum areas you realise that the accent tiles here are made from carbonfibre. This light and very strong high-tech material is the centre of the Pagani universe!

The resale value of the Zonda Coupe and Roadster models made over its lifetime has been climbing skywards since the Huayra was phased in alongside it starting in 2011. This is no surprise since just 140 Zondas were produced during the years when Pagani could only make about 25 cars a year.

With their rarity and the thrill of commanding a naturally-aspirated 7.3 litre AMG-made V12 motor placing Pagani beyond the realm of relatively mass-produced Ferrari and Lamborghini supercars, these hypercars are automotive treasures and rolling works of art.

So what comes after the Huayra Roadster? Earlier this year Pagani unveiled the spectacular Huayra Condalunga. A long-tail version of the Huayra aimed at aerodynamic efficiency in the vein of McLaren’s famous Longtail race cars, just five will be built and they were immediately sold out despite an asking price of 7 million Euros a copy!

The Huayra replacement, code-named C10 was originally slated to debut in 2020, but the pandemic put it far behind schedule. Thus, the all-new Pagani Utopia was only unveiled in mid-September this year at an amazing evening event in Milan.

I have known Horacio Pagani since he launched the Zonda back in 1999, but every time we meet I learn something new about this unassuming visionary who is as far from the larger-than-life characters I have met in the auto industry as you can get.

As you will have seen from the foregoing, the seamless fusion of Art and Science has always been woven through Horacio Pagani’s cars, buildings and other industrial design objects. Some would say this is something that he has in common with Leonardo da Vinci, the eclectic artist and unparalleled genius of the ages.

The World Premiere of the all-new Pagani Utopia certainly made the point with an unprecedented display of six original da Vinci drawings alongside this new Hypercar.

An equal surprise was the background musical composition played by the Symphony Orchestra of the Milan Conservatory, which was inspired by piano pieces composed many years ago by the young Horacio Pagani.

n our politically correct and oversensitized world, many of us secretly long for the ‘good-old-days’ – the times when true ‘alpha males’, now branded as toxic, dared to risk life and limb to further their cause, displayed healthy greed, and actually spoke their minds without threat of prosecution.

Mavericks have shaped our lives and society since its inception. They have created outstanding, singular achievements, amazing inventions and built impressive empires, often shot down by spectacular failures in exotic, far-away corners of the world, which we love to remember.

How times have changed! Labeled today as too offensive and disrespectful to the delicate nature our new ‘Snowflake generation’, these feats by remarkable individuals are forced into oblivion. A great loss to our society and future generations.

Hence the passing of Peter de Savary this 30th of October, one of Britain’s greatest financiers and daredevils, who built and lost mega fortunes in his colourful career, is yet another painful reminder of this inexorable descent into the vapidity of our society.

De Savary, like the Rockefellers and Vanderbilts, will be eventually banished from the history curricula of our children, who are increasingly conditioned to conform in politically correct schools. ‘Sic transit gloria mundi’.

Like all great punters, de Savary was a shrewd, ruthless, yet brilliant visionary: his claim to fame was the purchase of a haunted 1000 year old castle in Scotland, Skibo Castle, home to the infamous Carnegie Club. It made all the headlines as the venue for Madonna and Guy Ritchie’s wedding in 2003: a brilliant marketing coup for de Savary, who counted Skibo as only one of his many trophy properties, which included at one point in time the entire western tip of England: Lands’ End in Cornwall.

But de Savary had his eyes on far more tropical jewels, thousands of miles away from the freezing Scottish Highlands: the Caribbean.

After leading the British sailing team in its challenge for the America’s Cup in 1983, and spectacularly losing out against his opponent, this ego-crushing failure prompted him to seek refuge in the far less competitive and shallower azure waters of The Bahamas - of course no less than onboard Richard Burton’s and Elizabeth Taylor’s glorious motor yacht, Kalizma.

slaying of the richest man in the British Empire, gold mining tycoon Sir Harry Oakes in 1943, boasts a rich history of murky financial dealings and eccentric characters.

No exception to that rule, De Savary, upon his arrival on Bahamian shores, proceeded to promptly establish a bank in the nation’s capital of Nassau. With his cushy connections to politicians and celebrities, his mission was to raise millions of dollars to finance his exotic mining, oil and shipping adventures in South America.

The bank was not very successful and in 1980 lost $64 million. His subsequent partnership with the infamous Italian financier Roberto Calvi, dubbed the ‘God’s banker’ for his role in running Italy’s second largest bank for the Vatican, Banco Ambrosiano which collapsed in 1982, was a public embarrassment. Calvi was found hanged under a bridge in London in 1984 and de Savary decided to return to a quieter life on his yacht in The Bahamas. Banco Ambrosiano was later wound up by one of the world’s big audit advisory firms, BDO, in, you guessed it, Nassau Bahamas.

A convenient offshore tax haven, boasting banking secrecy and impenetrable offshore company structures since the early ‘70’s, it has always been home to the world’s ‘Rich and Famous’. A British colony until its independence in 1973, The Bahamas had gained global fame as

a playground for the European ‘jet set’ through no other than Sean Connery, Ian Fleming’s fantasy spy character, who first appeared in the 1965 thriller ‘Thunderball’.

When driven back to his beachfront hotel in Nassau at breakneck speed in a powder blue Ford Mustang by ravishing secret agent Fiona Volpe, played by Italian actress Luciana Paluzzi, Connery’s unrivalled riposte to her comment, if he was a nervous passenger, was: ‘ No, I don’t mind being driven; I just don’t like to be taken for a ride’. Classic.

Three more Bond movies followed with captivating underwater scenes filmed all across this stunning archipelago: ‘Thunderball Grotto’ today is a popular tourist hot spot in the Exumas, a chain of more than a hundred palm fringed Cays, or small islands, as they call them here, stretching southward only 40 miles from Nassau.

An underwater paradise, which hosts dozens of dangerous hammerhead and bull sharks during mating season; a daring diving adventure for the more suicidally inclined.

Sipping a dark rum around an ageing massive wooden table on top of the rocky grotto, tourists gaze at pinned up fading black and white photographs of their movie heroes captured during the ‘Thunderball’ filming over half a decade ago: a stark contrast to the glitzy parties, private yachts, 5-star hotels and gambling dens in vibrant Nassau, a mere 30 minute helicopter ride away.

A perfect setting for conspiring villains and their world domination fantasies not only in movies, but also in real life, The Bahamas had cast their spell on the world.

In a classic case of life imitating (questionable) art, I’ve just spent the best part of an hour scrolling mindlessly through suggested posts on facebook, bouncing from one triviality to another, lest I actually focus on the task in hand. I looked at screenshots of the text exchanges between an angry customer and the dodgy contractor who smashed up her bathroom when she refused to make payment for the shoddy work he’d done – it really was shoddy. I nearly bought an intriguingly crafty Christmas present for my son through a pop-up ad for £22, only to find it on Amazon for a third of the price.... then didn’t buy it anyway due to the scathing reviews – the inks don’t actually peel off properly in the water bath, they just shrivel up. AND the water bath isn’t even included, despite being in all the photos!?! I clicked on “15 times Tom Hardy was hilarious” but was instead taken to a load of anime memes and pictures of Conor McGregor getting more muscly over the years – I didn’t understand

any of the anime references but I know muscly muscles when I see them – McGregs got jacked ! I marvelled at a museum recreation of a 39,000 year old “Siberian Unicorn” (great big rhino), then lost 10 minutes marvelling even more at the disbelieving comments from the “Earth is 5000 years old, guns n’ God worshipping” set. I sat through a tutorial on faceswapping on Photoshop despite already knowing exactly how to do it – time well spent. I watched a compilation of funny/ clearly injurious “fail vids”, keenly aware I was failing in my original aim to write this piece – better than falling off a motorbike I suppose...

Anyway, I’m not alone. We all procrastinate, but we’re not all procrastinators, at least according to Professor of Psychology Joseph Ferrari, whose multitude of achievements and wide-ranging contributions to the field of study, including the book “Still Procrastinating?: The No Regrets Guide to Getting It Done,” prove it doesn’t take one to know one.

We now find ourselves living in the golden age of procrastination.

I did eventually shut my browser window and start typing but only because I heard my partner coming up the stairs and I wanted to pretend to be a proper person (Nine years in I think she’s mostly still buying it...)

Ironically enough, on this particular occasion, my procrastination was productive, since I’d already decided yesterday that procrastination would be the article theme and so my genuine pathological urge to put off the necessary actually just gifted me my intro. It’s not just that so much of the world is available at our fingertips; every piece of trivia, knowledge or entertainment... it’s that there are billions upon billions of dollars and some of the smartest people in tech actively working to wrestle our attention. Our temptations are not just floating out there waiting for us to think of them. They’re being algorithmically presented to us by companies whose ownership of our data mean they understand us better than most of our friends. According to

feelings of guilt, shame or disappointment at the end of a fruitless day, even if many flix were Net and feeds Buzzed.

Whatever your level of slavishness to putting off the necessary, it’s ultimately unrewarding. About three sentences back, whilst a quick detour to a film website led me to People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive 2022 front cover, rather then mindfully enjoying how... frankly, sexy Chris Evans is, the nagging sensation that the school run is only an hour off and I should really be writing, combined with the realisation that I don’t look anything like Captain America because I constantly put off meaningful exercise left me cold to his dreamy stare.

Once again, in this very specific instance, procrastinating gifted me a little more content, but I don’t fool myself that it’s generally helpful. As we push back against deadlines, both real and imagined with wanton distraction, we’re generally not truly enjoying ourselves, most people reporting

Setting boundaries on your time and sticking to them are also proven catalysts - constraints, even when self-imposed, work wonders for motivation. The more you enjoy a task, the less you’ll fall for temptations and distractions, so where possible, ensure your environment is organised conducive to your goal – just don’t use that as an excuse to delay it. Of course it’s nice the house is impeccably clean and the records are now in alphabetical order but that report still needs doing...

We’re talking neural rewiring here, so be kind and patient with yourself, but also resolute. It takes on average 66 days before a new habit becomes automatic, so set achievable, expandable goals, stick to them and you could well transform your life.....

I cherish Christmas. It is the month of celebrations. I love everything about the season, from opening up advent calendars to putting up decorations. Seeing friends and family socially to spend hours on cooking because, well, it is Christmas and definitely worth celebrating!

Coming from a multicultural background I always celebrated Scandinavian (Norwegian) Christmas on the 24th and Bulgarian/Danish Christmas on the 25th. Today we still celebrate the Scandinavian version and the UK version from my husband’s side of the family with elements of

LENTIL PÂTÉ WITH CARAMELISED PEARS

This is a great pâté that can be made in individual pots or as a terrine. The thyme and pear offer an extra layer of flavour. This is one of those dishes that gets better with time.

INGREDIENTS

280 g (10 oz) pre-cooked brown lentils (I suggest cooking your own for this recipe following packet instructions; 140 g/5 oz dry weight)

1 yellow onion, sliced 4 garlic cloves, sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra for frying and topping 300 g (101⁄2 oz) chestnut mushrooms

1 tablespoon maple syrup

1 tablespoon tamari or soy sauce

1 tablespoon sherry 20 g (3⁄4 oz) thyme leaves salt and pepper, to taste

FOR THE TOPPING:

1 small pear, sliced lengthways a few sage leaves sprigs of thyme

METHOD

• Start by cooking the lentils, ensuring they are nice and soft. Once cooked, drain thoroughly and set aside to cool.

• Fry the onion and garlic in some olive oil in a saucepan for a few minutes until soft.

• Roughly chop or tear the mushrooms, including the stems, then add to the pan and cook for a further 5–10 minutes.

• Add the lentils and give everything a good stir.

• Add the maple syrup, tamari/soy sauce, sherry, thyme, and salt and pepper. Stir well for a couple of minutes.

• Transfer the mixture to a food processor or blender with the olive oil and blitz until smooth.

(skillet), fry the pears until nice and golden, then add the sage leaves and thyme sprigs and allow to warm through.

• Add the fried pears and herbs to the top of the pâté, then pour over the remainder of the olive oil from the pan to cover and encapsulate the topping. If there is not enough oil to cover the topping by 5 mm (1⁄4 in), a little more olive oil.

• Refrigerate the pâté for a couple of hours or overnight and wait for the top to solidify before serving.

RISALAMANDE

This is a classic Danish Christmas dish that I have made into a plant-based version. Slow-cooked rice pudding is made extra luxurious with cream ladled in at the end and there’s also a hidden almond for one lucky finder.

INGREDIENTS

200 g (7 oz/1 cup) sushi rice (or any rice will do)

500 ml (17 fl oz/2 cups) water

250 ml (81⁄2 fl oz/1 cup) coconut cream or refrigerated full-fat tinned coconut milk

1⁄2 vanilla pod (bean), split and the seeds scraped out, or 1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla paste or extract

2 tablespoons soft brown sugar or 1 tablespoon maple syrup, honey or coconut sugar

1 almond (to hide inside the pudding once cooked)

TO FINISH: 100 ml (31⁄2 fl oz/scant 1⁄2 cup) coconut cream, whipped 1⁄2 vanilla pod (bean), split and the seeds scraped out or 1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla paste or extract

TO SERVE: warmed berries (such as blueberries, blackberries and strawberries) and a sprinking of ground cinnamon basil sprigs

METHOD

• Boil the rice in the water in a medium saucepan until all the liquid has completely evaporated. This should take no more than 20–30 minutes.

• Add the coconut cream, vanilla and sugar (or whichever sweetener you are using) to the rice and let everything simmer for a further 20 minutes until you have a beautiful, creamy, rice pudding-like consistency.

• Once the rice pudding is ready let it cool down completely.

• To finish, whip the cream and fold in to the rice pudding with the vanilla and cinnamon – and don’t forget to add the almond.

• Ladle into serving bowls, top with warm berries and basil, and whoever finds the lone almond in their dish has a lot of good luck coming their way!

COOK’S TIPS:

• Whatever quantity you would like to make, just use 1 part rice to 2 parts water to scale the recipe up or down.

• If using a fresh vanilla pod, once you have scraped out the seeds, pop the pod in the rice while it’s cooking for extra flavour and remove before serving.

This veritable feast is proceeded by a selection of mouth-watering starters including, mushrooms in a creamy tarragon sauce atop toasted ciabatta with melted cheese and a dash of Worcester sauce, a silky smooth chicken liver pate, accompanied by a caramelised apple compote and time honoured tangy Prawn cocktails.

If you have left any space and possibly possess a sweet tooth, there is also a tantalising assortment of homemade desserts on offer. Choose from sticky toffee pudding, fruit crumble and custard, crème brulee with mixed berry compote and shortbread and our particular favourite, a gin and tonic jelly served with gazed cherries, juniper berry syrup with a refreshing lime and basil sorbet. Once you add on a welcome glass of champagne and an afternoon of live music, it’s easy to understand the necessity of pre booking! Our sunny November Sunday on La Sala’s now famous terrace was one very well spent.
