Deciding on a future career just became somewhat tricky. Students aspiring to a future profession in such occupations as doctors, armed forces, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, retail, market research, blogging, drivers, proof-readers and even bookkeepers have just had their dreams dashed by… A ROBOT.

Entire houses are now built using AI and even the paintwork is automated. Robots are now building roads… and web sites! The most downloaded App in the brief history of Apps, ‘CHAT GPT,’ currently affords students the possibility of cheating on homework and also helps them pass exams to become lawyers, scientists or…clergymen! They can also become an event planner or a graphic designer, or maybe even a pro footballer, until Man City buy 11 robots, (cue Jack Grealish jokes.) But that’s about it!

According to Uncle Elon, 65% of current professions will be fully automated by the end of next year. So no more schools, no more universities, education as we know it is about to undergo massive changes. No longer will local residents be tied to paying 20k a year to the local college to teach their kid how to roll a spliff, change is coming. Marbella has just granted a license for a whole new modern approach to teaching. No seasonal terms, your child can just turn up and learn the subjects they excel in and are interested in learning. Oh and no expensive books and uniforms. These new seats of learning are positioned across the globe, so when you relocate your child enjoys the familiarity and best of all it follows a certified curriculum.

I guess the aforementioned begs a more pertinent question: why are we not up in arms about this? Are we all still too stressed and suppressed by recent restrictions? Robotic guard dogs are already gamefully employed and even the recent super bowl final, (third largest tv audience ever,) showcased metal performing pooches, in a stealthy bid to normalize the impending silver invasion.

Maybe the faceless people, who instruct the people, who lobby the people, who the people vote for, are concerned for their long term safety and prefer those protecting them to be of a more metallic hue. If we did replace the current crop of dead-neck world leaders with Daleks it would be tough to argue against it. Even the village robot would be an upgrade on most.

In magazine matters, humanoid Ian Greenland, explains why branches of McDonalds in Wrexham are playing classical music in a bid to make the Welsh youth behave less like Welsh youth. Another Ian, (we pay by the letter, ) Kuah affords us a peep into the future of motoring with the Audi Activesphere Concept. Which will no doubt be driverless by the time it goes into production. Staying on subject A.I. is also making waves in the art world. Stirring the pot to predictably polarising effect.

The future is bright… silver.

Newly crowned, Best Actor at the Golden Globes, Kevin Costner, has been rewarded for his captivating portrayal of the ruthless John Dutton in the hit drama Yellowstone, a show which has made Westerns relevant again. In this month’s Society Marbella, Edwina Cole, explains why she thinks Costner is the ultimate modern American cowboy.

My bestie and fellow box set addict, Natalia, has been sending me daily WhatApps for the past few months, demanding that I watch her latest TV obsessionYellowstone. Cowboys, westerns, bar fights and rodeo! Ermm, no thanks. I may be getting older, but I am not that old.

Last week, however, I finished the genius kitchen drama, ‘The Bear,’ and found myself needing to fill a void. Only to shut Natalia up, I gave the first episode a go. That’s all it took! I was hooked! Yellowstone! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE? Natalia has obviously been gloating non stop. My daily appraisals of the masterfully tough-as-nails Beth Dutton, the loyal, roguish, lovable and let’s be honest, totally gorgeous, ranch foreman and enforcer, Rip Wheeler, or the fans favourite, hapless ranch hand, Jimmy, have been met with condescending, ‘I told you so’s.’ I do despise smugness.

More than 12 million people tuned in to watch the season 5 premiere. Why?

Because the Dutton clan drama just keeps getting better. The show follows a seventh-generation family who own the largest ranch in the United States. The star, Kevin Costner, has exceeded all expectations, playing the hard-bitten, patriarch, beset on all sides by current times and ancient feuds.

Written and directed by Taylor Sheridan, who earned Oscar nominations for Sicario and Hell or High Water, the story deals with the conflict with bordering Native reservations, national parks, and land developers. The result,

may be the closest thing to capturing the ever-threatened, real-world West.

The attraction of Yellowstone, other than the hot cowboys, action packed fight scenes and breath taking scenery, is that the show taps into ‘the dream.’ Living off the land, preserving the old ways and being at one with nature. It leaves you yearning for a more simple way of life.

‘We’re shooting in Bitter Root Valley, which I call the Garden of Eden,’ Costner told TV Guide with evident delight. ‘It looks the way it did in America before first contact, and the mountains and those rivers prove it. I love waking up and working [in Montana]. It’s untouched land.’

The complex characters are another reason that the show keeps you hooked, taking you on a journey of growth with all of them.

As Costner perfectly put it, ‘I love working in this genre. There’s a musical dance that I feel when I do a western. My draw to it isn’t the gunfight, my draw is how people talk to each other and the type of characters.’

Now be warned, this show is highly addictive and you may, ahem, end up trying to persuade your husband to sell up, buy a pair of cowboy boots and move to a ranch in the wild wild west.

So until the rest of season 5 drops, here is a look at why Mr Kevin Costner... I will always love you.

A Love That Lasts A Lifetime

You can’t say the name Kevin Costner without ‘The Bodyguard’ subconsciously springing to mind. I remember holding my breath, when I first heard Whitney sing the movies theme song, ‘I will Always Love You,’ as a tear silently rolled down my cheek. The 1992 romantic blockbuster may have been panned by the critics but won the hearts of the public. 30 years later, despite all its cheese, it’s a movie for every moment, that satisfies on every level. It’s what I like to call innocent popcorn pleasure.

Costner played the rugged former secret service agent, hired to protect a famous soul and pop diva, (Whitney Houston,) from her stalker. He was also the one to push for the award winning singer to be cast over veteran actor-musicians like the late Olivia Newton-John and Dolly Parton. Houston’s enthralling performance proved he was right. The two forged such a close bond that when she died years later, Costner said in a statement, ‘I saved her then; I should have saved her now. … She was my one true love.’

The movie’s soundtrack became a cultural phenomenon, with the lead single selling over 45 million copies and it was Costner who first suggested she sing, ‘I Will Always Love You.’ At the 2022 SAG Awards he said. ‘When movies are working at their very best, they’re about moments and images that you’ll never ever forget…I don’t think we’ll ever forget when that little song came out, that she just blew up. She sang the first part of it a cappella and musically the world was never the same.’

A Hollywood Gunslinger

Every year in the run up to Christmas my Mum would watch her favourite movie, the heart stirring western epic “Dances With Wolves,’ and swoon over Mr Costner, much to my disgust. I mean she should only have had eyes for my Dad right? Mum would always clap in delight over the scene stealing wolf named Two Socks, no matter how many times she watched the movie.

It is beautifully filmed story, where a union soldier embraces the ways of the Sioux and falls in love with a white woman raised by the tribe. This epic, romantic masterpiece, was Kevin Costner’s directorial debut and went on to become one of the most successful Westerns of all-time, winning Best Picture and Best Director, over Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas.

Costner told the Washington Post .’I found ‘Dances’ and it was big, it was ambitious. I mean, I’m not stupid, I didn’t look at it and not think to myself, ‘My God, what am I doing?’ I’m just setting myself up for every known problem -- animals, non-actors, children, foreign language, length, subtitles. But I’m not being cavalier when I say I thought it was a greater risk to not do the movie.’

The Legendary Outlaw

The 90s classic, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was released over 30 years ago. I was obsessed and knew every line in the movie. I would watch it most days before school, shoveling down my Coco Pops while swooning over Christian Slater, who was cast as Robin Hood’s (Costner’s) brother.

Costner’s outlaw starred opposite Morgan Freeman’s Azeem and Alan Rickman’s iconic turn as the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham. These days the movie is remembered more for Costner’s glorious mullet and his very questionable English accent, but it will always hold a special place in my heart.

I am sure everyone will also recall the inescapable theme song, Bryan Adams, ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It For You,’ which could be heard everywhere, from supermarkets to shopping centres, to radio stations. I caught my Dad on one too many occasions muttering ‘If I hear this one more fxxxing time…..’

The Wild Wild West

What I love about Costner is that his all-American persona is the real deal. He remains one of the few Hollywood actors who can ride a horse as though he was born to it – no stuntman required. He also plays country music, guitar and twangy vocals in his band Kevin Costner & Modern West.

Offscreen he resides in a 17-acre seafront Santa Barbara ranch where the accomplished equestrian raises his own horses. He also owns a 165-acre ranch outside Aspen. More comfortable in the wide open spaces than at a starstudded Hollywood premiere, when not filming he spends his days in the saddle, usually riding alongside his wife of 16 years, Christine. His life revolves around his wife, seven children, horse riding and trout-fishing. Kevin Costner, is a happy man in a happy place.

On that note, I am going back to dreaming of moving to Montana, becoming a cowgirl and riding into the sunset shouting Yeehaw - Kevin, hope to see you there.

The news of her elderly mother Dora’s stroke reaches marine biologist Abby as she is studying Australia’s declining coral reefs. Abby recalls her childhood spent living in harmony with the water and her mother’s efforts to save the bay from selfish developers and invasive fishermen alike, often at the expense of their own relationship, as she hurries to her seaside village to care for Dora. Among the coral gardens, Abby befriends a rare fish, the blue groper, affectionately named Blueback, a tether to her environmentalism. Blueback serves as both a reminder of Abby’s environmental activism and a reminder to her and Dora of their love for one another and the fragile waters they call home.

It’s the height of prom season, and high school senior Mandy Yang and her best friend and fellow outsider Ben are surrounded by over-the-top ‘80s-themed Promposals. SHADOW AND BONE: SEASON 2

Finally, it’s nearly time to return to the kingdom of Ravka and beyond. In the trailer for Season 2 we witness the Crows joining forces with Jack Wolfe’s Wylan Hendriks, Jessie Mei Li’s Alina Starkov talking to Patrick Gibson’s Nikolai Lantsov, multiple explosions, chase sequences, and Ben Barnes’ General Kirigan asking someone what they’ll give up to pursue their wildest ambitions.

Protagonists Alina Starkov and Mal Oretsov will return, while the antagonistic General Kirigan – who survived an attack in the Shadow Fold in the Season 1 finale – is also back. The story follows Alina who is on the run. A beacon of hope to some and a suspected traitor to others, she’s determined to bring down the Shadow Fold and save Ravka from ruin.

CALL THE MIDWIFE: SEASON 12

Starring: Helen George, Linda Bassett, Leonie Elliott, Laura Main

The period drama has, arguably, risen to national treasure status – not least because of all of the wonderful midwives at Nonnatus House. All our favourites are back in Season 12 of the hit TV show, and after that proposal in the Christmas special, it seems there could be a wedding on the cards between Matthew Aylward and Trixie Franklin before the new season is over.

In season 4, Joe Goldberg, sorry, Professor Jonathan Moore—is working at a university in London to start a new life after killing his wife, burning down their home, and leaving his infant son behind. The first five episodes of Season 4, now streaming on Netflix, conclude by unmasking Joe’s new buddy Rhys as the socalled “Eat the Rich Killer.” Rhys threatens to pin all of his murders on Joe if he doesn’t kill Kate’s obnoxiously smarmy friend Roald. Not only does Joe not kill Roald he vows to take Rhys down once and for all, a scheme made even more complicated by Rhys’ decision to run for Mayor of London.

High School Musical alum, Vanessa Hudgens shared her excitement about marrying her baseball player fiancé showing off her sparking, emerald-cut engagement ring in an Instagram post. “YES. We couldn’t be happier,” they wrote on their social accounts alongside a photo in Paris

Lori’s appearance at the award show marks her first time showing up to an award ceremony since the scandal and her prison time. Lori stepped away from that spotlight in 2019, when she and her husband Mossimo Giannulli were arrested for their involvement in the college admissions scandal, which was organized by Rick Singer. The scandal involved using fraudulent methods to help get children from rich families, including Lori and Mossimo’s daughters, Bella Giannulli and Olivia Jade Giannulli, into top U.S. colleges. After pleading guilty, Lori served a twomonth prison sentence and Mossimo served five months, in late 2020. According to the BBC, a McDonald’s branch in Wrexham, North Wales has decided to start piping classical music in after 5pm in an effort to curb the persistent antisocial behaviour being committed by gangs of bored youths. (Presumably whoever thought of this still hasn’t seen A Clockwork Orange...) Amongst the recently reported incidents was a mass assault involving some 20 people when fire extinguishers were let off and staff were hit with thrown coins and signs (I’d see getting hit with an actual sign as a sign I needed to get a job somewhere other than McDonald’s.... The hurled money thing would be slightly more ambiguous I guess. Strippers seem to love it, but then dancing naked for drunk strangers is probably better for your self esteem than working in a McDonald’s in North Wales...)

In a further effort to deter the troublemaking loiterers, it’s reported the “restaurant” will also disable their WIFI at certain times, meaning if anyone wants to TikTok themselves throwing coins at staff they’ll have to attempt it on their own bloody 3G. (“Er, It’s 5G now.” – ed. (“Errr, It’s North Wales mate.” - me))

Wrexham’s certainly not the first branch to employ classical music to set a certain, more “civilized” tone. McDonald’s head office said the tactic has proven successful for more than a decade in helping relax diners and calming those

desperately waiting for a freshly deep-fried box of McNuggets or the plastic toy in their Happy Meal. A branch in Shepherd’s Bush which had in 2017 reported 71 criminal acts in or around the store saw a dramatic reduction in incidents when they introduced classical music... of course they also saw a dramatic reduction in customers when everyone under 30 fucked off to the nearest KFC, which was still blazing the type of dance music you can really throw some signs to.

Whilst it leaves many bored or indifferent and actually appears to be a type of kryptonite to the Fast and Furious crowd, research studies

It’s been shown to lower stress and anxiety levels, reduce depression, improve memory, mood and cognitive function and even help with pain management. The positive effects on mood should theoretically deter people from throwing coins at staff in McDonald’s, although if a given symphony fell short of stopping coin throwing altogether, presumably improved cognitive function would result in better focus and accuracy and therefore a higher hit rate? On the upside, the staff in McDonald’s, now struck by more coins might feel the pain of said thrown coins and the anxiety of the situation a little less It’s all very confusing but I think the message is clear.... eat in Nando’s Or don’t expect Mozart to pick up the clack for inadequate funding for education, youth centres, local entertainment, sports and recreation facilities....

Besides, classical music has not always kept its somewhat upturned nose clean, courting numerous controversies over the years. When Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring premiered in Paris’s Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in 1913, the controversial subject matter (a sacrificial pagan ritual during which a virgin dances herself dead), confrontingly atypical music and choreography were expected to raise some eyebrows, but perhaps not chairs during an actual so the story goes). Of course the French love a good riot (reckon we could learn a thing or two there) but the seemingly bourgeois confines of a ballet performance are not where you’d expect things bigger than McNuggets to start getting chucked about. Despite its early controversy, Stravinsky’s was subsequently reappraised as his seminal masterpiece and is regarded as one of the most influential musical works of the 20th Century.... think the Macarena might have something to say about that...

SWIMMING YOUR TROUBLE AWAY

It’s no secret that aerobic exercise can help stave off some of the ravages of aging. But a growing body of research suggests that swimming might provide a unique boost to brain health.

Regular swimming has been shown to improve memory, cognitive function, immune response and mood. Swimming may also help repair damage from stress and forge new neural connections in the brain.

Until the 1960s, scientists believed that the number of neurons and synaptic connections in the human brain were finite and that, once damaged, these brain cells could not be replaced. But that idea was debunked as researchers began to see ample evidence for the birth of neurons, or neurogenesis, in adult brains of humans and other animals.

Now, there is clear evidence that aerobic exercise can contribute to neurogenesis and play a key role in helping to reverse or repair damage to neurons and their connections in both mammals and fish.

neurotrophic factor. The neural plasticity — or ability of the brain to change — that this protein stimulates has been shown to boost cognitive function, including learning and memory.

Studies in people have found a strong relationship between concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor circulating in the brain and an increase in the size of the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for learning and memory. Increased levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor have also been shown to sharpen cognitive performance and to help reduce anxiety and depression. In contrast, researchers have observed mood disorders in patients with lower concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor.

Aerobic exercise also promotes the release of specific chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. One of these is serotonin, which — when present at increased levels — is known to reduce depression and anxiety and improve mood.

In one limited study looking at the impact of swimming on mental acuity, researchers concluded that the swimmers had improved mental speed and attention compared with non-swimmers.

Swimming has long been recognized for its cardiovascular benefits. Because swimming involves all of the major muscle groups, the heart has to work hard, which increases blood flow throughout the body. This leads to the creation of new blood vessels, a process called angiogenesis. The greater blood flow can also lead to a large release of endorphins — hormones that act as a natural pain reducer throughout the body. This surge brings about the sense of euphoria that often follows exercise.

Most of the research to understand how swimming affects the brain has been done in rats. Rats are a good lab model because of their genetic and anatomic similarity to humans. In one study in rats, swimming was shown to stimulate brain pathways that suppress inflammation in the hippocampus and inhibit apoptosis, or cell death. The study also showed that swimming can help support neuron survival and reduce the cognitive impacts of aging. Although researchers do not yet have a way to visualize apoptosis and neuronal survival in people, they do observe similar cognitive outcomes.

One of the more enticing questions is how, specifically, swimming enhances short- and long-term memory. To pinpoint how long the beneficial effects may last, researchers trained rats to swim for 60 minutes daily for five days per week. The team then tested the rats’ memory by having them swim through a radial arm water maze containing six arms, including one with a hidden platform.

Rats got six attempts to swim freely and find the hidden platform. After just seven days of swim training,

researchers saw improvements in both short- and long-term memories, based on a reduction in the errors rats made each day. The researchers suggested that this boost in cognitive function could provide a basis for using swimming as a way to repair learning and memory damage caused by neuropsychiatric diseases in humans.

Although the leap from studies in rats to humans is substantial, research in people is producing similar results that suggest a clear cognitive benefit from swimming across all ages. For instance, in one study looking at the impact of swimming on mental acuity in the elderly, researchers concluded that swimmers had improved mental speed and attention compared with nonswimmers.

However, this study is limited in its research design, since participants were not randomized and thus those who were swimmers prior to the study may have had an unfair edge. Another study compared cognition between land-based athletes and swimmers in the young adult age range. While water immersion itself did not make a difference, the researchers found that 20 minutes of moderate-intensity breaststroke swimming improved cognitive function in both groups.

UDesign’s new showroom is a combination of showroom, interactive interior design space and informal meeting place for clients and design professionals, where architects, designers and projects managers are on hand to offer their knowledge and creativity as needed and asked for. Their task goes way beyond the showing of products and materials.

The raison d’être of this showroom is firmly on good design and how best to make it work for the client. But what appears to be wonderful in a showroom might not be so wonderful at home, and this is where specialist knowledge comes in.

Buying a beautiful sofa is easy but buying one that really works in the space one has available is not so easy. It may be too big or too small. It may be upholstered in a material you love, but your dog may love it too. Perhaps a more user-friendly material, which can be taken off and washed occasionally, would suit you better, and UDesign will advise you on that.

This is the age-old compromise between function and aesthetics, and it is often difficult for a client to be conscious of all the practicalities all the time. In the new showroom, every aspect of a purchase decision is thought about very carefully

by all concerned, the task made somewhat easier by the overall layout of the products on show: a dozen or so very different zones designed to demonstrate different ideas and styles. Each zone showcases how furniture placement, materials and colours can blend to create a specific mood or style.

UDesign first analyse the space people have in their homes to create what they call a special plan, which is something akin to a personal shopper service. “Think of it as you would when being fitted for a Saville Row suit. Fitted is the key word, because you are not buying it off the rack. What

you think you want and what looks good on you are not necessarily the same thing. It’s similar with a house” says Jason Harris, Creative Director and CEO of UDesign.

Lighting is an area that also requires professional skills to get right, because

most of us do not spend hours of our time thinking about it and analysing all the options available. UDesign do. They consider all aspects of illumination - direct lighting, ambient lighting, low lights, bright lights, and technical advances that the client did not even know existed.

“What lighting you use and how you use it is subject to everything else in the room, quite apart from its architecture and overall design,” says Jason.

The client may not know what they want, and here the showroom itself comes into its own. All these zones show different designs, all beautiful and all different, ranging from conservative to eclectic to moody to minimalist. Each zone has been designed to create an entity that says something, to help people identify how they really feel about a room that they can relate to and identify with, according to their personal taste.

“We get a feel for what people really like from the showroom, and what they don’t like, and with that knowledge we can help them to create a style that’s unique to them and their lifestyle,” says Jason.

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS AT VISTA LAGO

BRIGHT, the development company behind Vista Lago Residences, is pleased to announce that construction work on the villas has started, following an 18-month period of infrastructure development. The dream of building the best luxury development in the world (and that’s official!) is well on its way to becoming reality

Granted, it took a while. Covid and subsequent global supply chain problems contributed to the delay in completing the infrastructure, but almost 18 months on, the construction workers have moved on-site, with the villas expected to be ready for occupancy by autumn next year.

Infrastructure work was especially challenging, given the sloped terrain that makes each of these individually designed luxury villas unique, each with uninterrupted views over the coastline, the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa beyond, and all on large plots that make each villa appear to stand alone in the landscape.

Two construction companies will be working simultaneously to build the villas. The award-winning team at the Atlas Group, well-known for their integrity

and technical excellence, and the long-established Prinza Construcciones, specialists in luxury villa construction.

The architects and interior designers are UDesign, partners of BRIGHT, with multiple architecture and interior design awards and a team of architects, interior designers and craftspeople working on luxury projects all over the world. The result is a development that has won the top prize – “Best Architecture in Europe” – at the International Property Awards and “Best Development in the World”.

Michael Rodziewicz, CEO of BRIGHT, tells us that “it’s all about superb design, creativity and respect for a site that is truly unique, high in the hills over the coast, with its spectacular views from almost every part of each of the villas that make up Vista Lago.”

As far as BRIGHT is concerned, he says, the environmental impact of the project is of the utmost importance.

“Fresh air, tranquillity and silence are the key words here, because this unique development is surrounded by nature, built right beside the Sierra de las Nieves National Park, which is also very important from an investment perspective. “Collaborating architects for the project are the Marbella firm Gonzalez & Jacobson,” Jason goes on, “and they helped us a lot in that respect, since they specialise in the development of difficult terrain. They have been instrumental in the success of the project.”

The launch of the Audi ur-quattro in 1980 turned the road and rally car world on its head when the Ingolstadt-based car manufacturer delivered the world’s first massproduction car with permanent four-wheel-drive. The quattro name was soon writ large in lights as the revolutionary turbocharged Coupe pummeled the opposition in the World Rally Championship. The unerring traction advantage of 4WD in the hands of rally stars Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomqvist, Walter Rohl and Michèle Mouton was clear for all to see.

Thanks to these rally successes, ‘quattro’ quickly because a household word synonymous with all-weather traction, and the higher specification Audi models offered with this system quickly became popular in countries with harsh winters.

The 1980s saw the arrival of the Audi 200 Avant quattro, a turbocharged estate car that used 4WD to help it dispense its 200hp through allweather traction. The Audi RS6 Avant arrived in 1997, using 4WD traction as a performance aid to help keen drivers more effectively

deploy the 450hp mustered by its twin-turbo 4.2 litre V8.

Audi cleverly capitalised on the base platform yet again in 1999, raising the ride height for light off-road capability with the first generation A6 Allroad quattro. Gaining a following with buyers who eschewed bulky SUVs but required a slightly raised ride height for light off-road work. The popular Allroad formula continues to this day with the current fourth generation A6 and the smaller A4 Allroad, now in its third generation.

I SAY THIS WITH CONVICTION BECAUSE OF THIS CAR’S CLEAR LINEAGE FROM THREE WORDS THAT HAVE BEEN PART OF AUDI’S BRAND VOCABULARY FOR DECADES: QUATTRO, ALLROAD AND SPORTBACK.

The third established Audi design motif is the Sportback, which first debuted in 2004 on the A3, and is epitomised by the sleek four-door coupé styling on the A5 Sportback and A7. Mix this rich history of versatile 4WD Avant Allroad quattro and A7 models, add an electric motor on each axle and project it forwards a generation, and you have the activesphere concept. Audi calls this new body variant “active Sportback”.

A full-size luxury model, the activesphere concept is a sleek crossover coupé based on Audi’s innovative flagship Premium Platform Electric (PPE) drive system. Like the Audi grandsphere and Audi urbansphere concept cars that debuted in 2022, the activesphere concept draws on this modular system for series production.

PPE is the first platform designed to accommodate a wide range of

premium models from high ground clearance SUVs and CUVs to the A6, the core Audi model with almost identical external dimensions and wheelbase to the Audi activesphere concept.

PPE is designed exclusively for batteryelectric drive systems and leverages the advantage of this technology to enhance driving dynamics, economy, and package options. Developed together with Porsche AG, under Audi’s leadership, the first PPE-based Audi production vehicles will debut before the end of this year.

The key element of these forthcoming models is a battery module between the axles, which in this case holds around 100kWh of energy, and utilizing the entire width of the car between axles makes it possible to achieve a relatively flat layout for the battery.

An electric motor on each axle makes for a total output of 325kW, with a system torque of 720Nm. Range anxiety and charging are clear and present problems for EV owners. Thus, the heart of the drive technology in all future PPE models will be the 800-volt charging technology, which ensures that batteries can be charged very rapidly with up to 270kW at fast-charging stations.

This PPE technology enables charging times that come close to a conventional refueling stop for a combustion engine car, with just 10 minutes of charging being sufficient to load enough energy to power the car for over 300 km. The 100-kWh battery can be charged from 5 to 80% in under 25 minutes, and if you start with a full battery the claimed range is over 600km.

To optimise ride and handling the engineers use a five-link independent suspension system with an adaptive air suspension unit and adaptive damper at each corner. For off-road use the ride height can be raised at the touch of a button. The Audi activesphere’s ground clearance is also variable; ideal for off-road use, it can be increased by 40mm from the basic height of 208mm, or lowered by the same amount, which benefits both the center of gravity and aerodynamics at speed.

Its dimensions - 4.98m long, 2.07m wide, and 1.60m high - make the Audi activesphere concept a member of the premium segment. Typical of an electric car, the wheelbase of the 4.98m long activesphere is a generous 2.97m, providing maximum legroom for occupants.

The relatively short front and rear overhangs make the car look more compact while aiding approach and departure angles off-road. The former is 18.9˚, with the latter at 28.1˚.

While the beefy 285/55R22 all-terrain tyres reinforce the cars off-road ability, the alloy wheels are designed to aid efficiency on the blacktop. They feature movable segments that open for optimum ventilation off-road, and then close for optimum aerodynamics when

A glazed nose panel mimics Audi’s Singleframe grille, giving front seat occupants an unobstructed view through the large frunk to the road in front. Metal strips with slightly offset vertical studs, arranged parallel to one another, are integrated along the lower body. These elements deploy when the ground clearance is increased, visualising the off-road mode. Glass panels in the lower door area help to dissolve the boundary between the interior and world outside when the

activesphere is in off-road mode. The wide, curved tailgate features extensive glazing, while the transparent roof panel lets abundant daylight into the cabin.

An overwhelming sense of light and space greets you as you climb into the spacious interior of the Audi activesphere through doors hinged from their front and rear edges with no intrusive B-pillar. The four individual seats are suspended like extensions of the high, full-length center console. The designers imagined the seat, back, and shoulder surfaces as three separate, circumferential shells. While their appearance hints at good lateral support, these seats also appear physically light and maintain a balance between automotive function and the elegance of a lounge chair.

When the Audi activesphere concept is in autonomous driving mode, the

dashboard, steering wheel, and pedals disappear into the front of the cabin, further enhancing the sense of space. From the front seats especially, your perception extends to the front end of the activesphere and beyond, while the fully glazed Singleframe gives all occupants an unobstructed view of outside world.

If the driver wants to take over the wheel, the instrument panel along with the steering wheel, swivel out from their flush position below the windscreen. The MMI touchless controls in the doors are always accessible to the eye and the hand, for example to control windows and seat adjustments. The dashboard works like a large soundbar through the wood as well as a smart, full-width air-vent in both the deployed and stowed position.

The roof console that mirrors the centre console in its dimensions, holds the four

Previously VR goggles were limited to depicting a virtual reality without any real-world elements. However, technology evolved into augmented reality, whereby the real world is superimposed with virtual content. Now, Mixed Reality is able to depict virtual content with 3D spatial reference to the real world.

The user can view virtual content, initially for information only. If the user then focuses with his or her eyes on the information, thus signaling interest, the system displays more detailed information. Content becomes an active and interactive element as soon as the user is focused and engages, i.e., with gestures.

This means the hand can then intuitively follow the user’s gaze to control onboard functions, while the user interface (the virtual display in the headset) reacts to changes in real time like a conventional instrument. A particularly user-friendly feature, the virtual control moves towards the user so that he or she can interact comfortably with the user interface, regardless of sitting position.

A specific control only appears when it is required, and can be operated just as intuitively as it would be in the real world. A key point is that the diverse functions of the car are not organised in the typical way they are today in a car with screens and physical function. Instead they are located logically right in front of the elements they are related to. Thus, the air-conditioning control ‘hovers’ in front of the air-vent, while the entertainment and sound interactive panel ‘hovers’ over the speakers. However, the possibilities of this technology are by no means exhausted. In off-road mode, for example, high-resolution 3D topography graphics can be projected

onto the real landscape and information on navigation and the destination can be displayed. Traffic safety information, i.e., alerts for traffic jams or slippery roads, can also be used here.

Depending on their needs, passengers and drivers are provided with very individual content in their respective mixed reality headset. With the driver concentrating on steering while active behind the wheel, passengers can begin looking into and even preparing activities at their destination.

Conversely, the activesphere passenger can take his or her headset out of the car and onto the ski slope to help navigate a trail or to find the ideal descent path when skiing downhill.

Information about the car itself, the battery range, and the nearest charging stations can also be accessed from both inside and outside the vehicle. And there are also advance warnings of safety related things like low tyre pressures, as well as a weather forecast function as a criterion for selecting a route.

A FIELD WHICH HAS ALWAYS STIRRED DEBATE IS ART (AND WHAT IS ART?) AND HERE ALSO, INROADS ARE BEING MADE BY AI, STIRRING THE POT TO PREDICTABLY POLARIZING EFFECT.

In recent weeks, my social media feed has been prompting me with several ads for AI powered content generation tools. I don’t remember ever googling that rather specific thing, so perhaps the first ad appeared at random... though “random” is not really an appropriate term these days. Everything we see is data driven, so whilst I might not have gone searching for “AI powered content generation tools”, my online activities have algorithmically still delivered that result to my door. It occurs to me in this moment that researching a recent article about procrastination and its place in the process of writing might have suggested to the machines that I’m a potentially easy mark for this service. The reason I noticed that first ad (if indeed it was the first), amongst the many suggested posts I subconsciously discount was the accompanying picture, incongruous as it was with the text, but of a face familiar to me – a person whose YouTube channel I have occasionally visited. Cynically discrediting the idea of AI generated prose (Surely it could never swear as creatively as me!?) whilst rebuffing the clickbait tactics of the “randomly” assigned image (presumably a machinechosen lure curated for different users...) I moved on. Although I never actually clicked through to anything on offer, the fact I slowed my scrolling enough to not just acknowledge the ad, but implicitly tell the algorithms I might want to see more of the sort seemingly validated the machine-learning on display.... cue many more ads of the sort.

Ironically enough, AI generated content has, by way of a targetted, algorithmically-chosen ad, generated content – this content... just not revenue for the advertisers. Nevertheless, it’s testament to how sophisticated things are becoming. A jaunt down my feed this morning brought a related ad in the form of MovieBot, an AI powered tool which promises to turn your short TV or movie ideas into fully fledged scripts. Having once read the hilarious (yet unnerving) rally address generated by an AI bot fed 1,000 hours of Donald Trump speeches (Google it), my expectations for coherence were not high. What passed freakishly plausibly for Trump-speak would surely not work for anyone with a normally functioning brain? Nevertheless, amongst the many dismissive comments deriding both the presumed efficacy of the tech and the current state of cinematic storytelling as soulless even before removal of the human element, were several surprisingly enthusiastic responses. Some of these were from actual users and others appeared to be from entertainment industry professionals (or very convincing moles), disagreeing with the cynics and heralding the tech as another sandbox to play in – a new tool to strengthen rather than supplant a scriptwriter’s arsenal. Far from signalling the end of human creativity, could it not represent a new avenue for blue-sky thinking? Perhaps writer’s bot might help alleviate writer’s block?

The relative quality of these images varies dramatically, but when the process works, it’s astonishing. Certain users have gained swift recognition for their ability to effectively prompt the tools into creating evocative, realistic, consistent or cohesive works. Galleries have already come knocking.

Critics still admonish the apparent lack of creative input and numerous red flags have been raised in terms of copyright issues and the effect of the technology on a community of “traditional” artists already struggling to make a living in a world which never fully appreciates how much more vibrant and interesting a place it is thanks to their input. Many are now decrying AI art as not art whilst simultaneously declaring “Art is dead”, a hysteria frighteningly similar to when the proliferation of photography in the early-mid 19th Century had painters and critics up in arms. Nevertheless, the tech’s methodology is concerning, as the programs scour millions of images from the open web, teaching algorithms to recognise relational patterns to the end of recreating certain aesthetics and styles in newly generated work. By uploading their art to the net, human artists are arguably training the instruments of their destruction to better imitate and potentially supplant their intellectual property.

Not everyone agrees we have a crisis, provided companies commissioning AI art and individuals creating it stick to a necessary code of ethics... Good luck with that...

Some celebrate AI art as the most prescient form of art there is – ultimately it’s the art of big data and we live in an age of big data. Its ability to quickly straddle, augment and reconfigure vast information sets far outstrips our own.

Many argue that everything’s essentially already been done and there’s no shame in simply modifying. Louis Vuitton’s late artistic director and multimedia powerhouse Virgil Abloh was quoted as saying “A creative only has to add a three per cent tweak to a preexisting concept in order to generate a cultural contribution deemed innovative.”

When critics accused him of artistic plaigarism, his retort: “Duchamp is my lawyer.”

Marcel Duchamp’s 1917 piece “Fountain”, a signed urinal, was arguably the first piece of conceptual art and we’ve been arguing about what constitutes art ever since, it’s just now we can argue with machines.

CHOCOLATE & HONEYCOMB BRITTLE BARK

Honeycomb is the best, especially when it’s drizzled with chocolate and sprinkled with chopped nuts. We are going the extra mile with these and making them very giftable. Or you can just keep them all to yourself.

INGREDIENTS

125 g (4 oz) golden (corn) syrup

200 g (7 oz) sugar

2 tablespoons water

2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)

2 bars of vegan milk or dark chocolate

SUGGESTED TOPPINGS:

dried fruits (such as raisins, currants and figs)

nuts (such as hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios, cashews and flaked/ slivered almonds)

dried flower petals (such as cornflowers)

METHOD

Heat the golden syrup, sugar and water in a very large saucepan, stirring occasionally until golden brown. If you have a sugar thermometer, the liquid is ready when it reaches 150°C (300°F). If you don’t have a thermometer, drop some of the mixture into cold water – if it hardens quickly and cracks, it is ready; if it is mouldable and bendy, it needs to boil a bit longer.

Line a baking tray (pan) with greaseproof (waxed) paper. When the sugar liquid is ready, remove from the heat and add the bicarbonate of soda and stir well. The mixture will go white and bubbly and double in size (which is why it is very important to use a large pan!).

Pour the mixture onto the lined baking tray and place in the fridge to harden.

Meanwhile, melt the chocolate in a bain-marie and pour over the hardened honeycomb. Add your choice of toppings immediately before the chocolate starts to harden.

Return to the fridge and once the honeycomb is fully set, break into pieces and put in bags as gifts, or simply eat them yourself!

CHOCOLATE PULL-APART BREAD

An Easter bread with a difference. It contains chocolate, tick, and is sticky and sweet, double tick. Great to make as a family or with kids, and it also makes a lovely gift.

INGREDIENTS

180 ml (6 fl oz/generous 1⁄2 cup) plant milk • 80 g (3 oz) vegan butter • 25 g (1 oz) fresh yeast or 2 teaspoons fast-action dry yeast • 4 teaspoons soft brown sugar • 440 g (1 lb/2 cups) plain (all-purpose) flour • pinch of salt

FOR THE FILLING:

60 g (2 oz) hazelnuts • 50 g (2 oz) vegan butter

90 g (31⁄2 oz/1⁄2 cup) soft brown sugar • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom

1⁄2 teaspoon ground cloves • 100 g (31⁄2 oz) chocolate chips or chopped chocolate

FOR THE ICING:

100 g (31⁄2 oz/3⁄4 cup) icing (confectioner’s) sugar

1 tablespoon maple syrup • 1 tablespoon vegan butter, melted • 1⁄2 vanilla pod (bean), split and the seeds scraped out, or 1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla paste or extract

METHOD

Gently heat the milk and butter over a low heat. Leave to cool down until the mixture is warm but not piping hot. Add the yeast and mix well and stir in the sugar and pinch of salt until fully dissolved. Transfer to a bowl and add the flour. Mix everything together well and then use the heel of your hand to knead until a nice dough ball is formed. Cover with a dish towel and keep somewhere warm to rise for at least 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes.

H the hazelnuts in a saucepan until they start to toast then set aside. Add the butter and sugar to the pan and heat until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves. Stir in the spices and remove from the heat.

Line a large loaf pan with baking parchment and arrange a handful of hazelnuts over the bottom along with a spoonful or two of the butter-sugar mixture. Cut the dough in half and then in half again until you have 16 bigger pieces or 32 smaller ones. Roll the pieces into balls and dip them in the remaining butter-sugar mixture. Build the balls up in the loaf pan, adding some chocolate chips and hazelnuts between the layers of balls. Cover with a dish towel and leave to prove for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F/gas 4). Bake the bread for 30–45 minutes until golden brown. Once baked, allow to cool in the pan on a wire rack and turn out once cooled.

Mix the ingredients for the icing together in a bowl and drizzle over the bread once it has cooled down completely.

THE TIME IS

Having lived in our great city for over 15 years, the only thing I really miss about my former home was a good Chinese restaurant. That particular lure ended with the opening of Mao in 2021.

Situated adjacent to the hugely popular Max Beach overlooking the glorious Mediterranean, this feast for the senses now sits alone as the go to for all lovers of this most popular cuisine. Choosing to dine at 6pm on a Wednesday we might have expected an hour or so to ourselves but nothing of the sort. After a packed Valentine’s the night before, the restaurant was already half full with large groups and more than a few lovestruck couples who may have got their dates wrong! Having made a pre selfie selection of Asian delicacies, the house special Dim-Sum duly arrived in its bamboo home, providing us with the evening’s first dilemma: 3x3 dumplings and four people, this wasn’t looking good for new intern Helen! Before this telepathic eating contest could become an issue, restaurant manager Elias restored order by further adorning the table with four Vietnamese spring rolls. The returning smile on the interns face quickly dissipated with the arrival of the next course of ‘Dragon crunchy sushi roll’ and culturally appropriate eating utensils, a crash course in acceptable chopstick use ensued.

this fabulous feast when our newly confident staff addition just had to mention the sticky rice and Mango dessert! Coats off, belts loosened, well… be rude not to.
