Synthesis Type of publication: Book Author(s): Jacques Marzin, Pascal Bonnet, Omar Bessaoud, Christine Ton-Nu FAO Supervising Officier: Alfredo Impiglia Publishing house: FAO ; CIRAD ; CIHEAMIAMM Year of publication: Cairo, 2017 Pages: xxvi, 186 p. Abstract: This report provides an overview of a study conducted in the NENA region in 20152016 in partnership with FAO, CIRAD, CIHEAM-IAMM and six national teams, each of which prepared a national report. In the six

1

countries under review in the NENA region (Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Mauritania, Sudan and Tunisia), agriculture is carried out primarily by small-scale family farmers, the majority of whom run the risk of falling into the poverty trap, largely due to the continuous fragmentation of inherited landholdings. As such, the development of small-scale family farming can no longer be based solely on intensifying agriculture, as the farmers are not able to produce sufficient marketable surplus due to the limited size of their landholdings. An approach based strictly on agricultural activity is also insufficient (as small-scale family farms have already diversified their livelihoods with off-farm activities). In fact, developing smallscale farming cannot be achieved by focusing strictly on the dimension of production. Abstract: Les agricultures des six pays étudiés de la région Nena (Egypte, Liban, Maroc, M a u r i t a n i e , S o u d a n e t Tu n i s i e ) s o n t majoritairement le fait de petits agriculteurs familiaux. NEMO EGYPT: Rural Coastal communities development in Egypt The NEMO project is engaged with Matrouh coastal communities to transform fishery and coastal resources into sustainable livelihood opportunities. Matrouh Governorate is an axcellent example of how the potential hidden within a territory can be maximized to become an opportunity of sustainable coastal development through the enhancement of key sectors such as fishery, agriculture and tourism. NEMO has partnered with local associations to identify strategic value chains, and worked to enhance collective resource management. To help local fishermen reach formal and niche market standards, the NEMO project has provided capacity building and equipment to help maintain fish quality between harvest, processing, storing, and sale. As a result, all actors in the value chain (including public research institutions, local cooperatives and associations, traders, and owners of shops and restaurants) have had opportunities to comunicate with each other. A fully integrated fish supply chain helps set higher, fairer proces, benefitting previously undervalued fisherman and other producers. In the agricultural sector the project supported and assisted local farmers through tecnical and legal assistance for the creation of a local agricultural cooperative to become one of the key actors for the donor community in the area of development. Training and equipment for the marketing of their products and actions to foster.

Making forest concessions in the tropics work to achieve the 2030 Agenda: Voluntary Guidelines

Forestry

Type of publication: Book Author(s): Y.T. Tegegne, J. Van Brusselen, M. Cramm, T. Linhares-Juvenal, P. Pacheco, C. Sabogal and D. Tuomasjukka Publishing house: FAO Other Entities Involved: European Forest Institute Year of publication: 2018 Pages: 130 p. Serial Title: FAO Forestry Paper (FAO) ; 180 ISBN: 978-92-5-130547-8 Agrovoc: guidelines; forest cover; tropical forests; forest land use; forest management. Abstract: The decision to develop a set of voluntary guidelines for forest concessions in the tropics, in the context of the 2030 Agenda, stems from the need to advance the implementation of sustainable forest management (SFM). In tropical countries, where deforestation rates are decreasing but remain alarming, and public production forests represent a large share of total production forests, the impact of forest concessions as a policy instrument can be significant. They can determine either unsustainable or sustainable behaviour, depending on the commitment and capacity of those implementing the concessions, and the regulatory and economic environment. To date, forest concessions have delivered mixed results, as demonstrated by the various regional studies and reports conducted under the Forest Concessions Initiative (FCI). However, this negative perception is not only associated with the effectiveness of forest concessions in meeting conservation and development goals, but also with timber production. The specific objective of these Voluntary Guidelines is to promote the sustainable management of public production natural forests in tropical countries through forest concessions, thereby fulfilling their potential contribution to the achievement of Agenda 2030. Forest concession regimes are treated here as forest policy instruments, and should be aligned with the sustainable forest management objectives agreed by countries in the UNFF. The current Guidelines intend to serve as guidance for making forest concessions an effective economic instrument of forest policy in the context of the 2030 Agenda, transforming them into an instrument capable of delivering sustainable forest management in all its dimensions, and generating socio-economic benefits to relevant stakeholders. forests: we need to work across sectors, bring stakeholders together, and take urgent action. The State of the World's Forests 2018 identifies actions that can be taken to increase the contributions of forests and trees that are necessary to accelerate progress towards the SDGs. It is now critical that steps be taken to work more effectively with the private sector, and the informal forest sector must be transformed in order to bring broader economic, social and environmental benefits. Seventy years ago, when FAO completed its first assessment of the world's forest resources, the major concern was whether there would be enough timber to supply global demand; now we recognize the greater global relevance of our forests and trees. For the first time, The State of the World's Forests 2018 provides an assessment of the contribution of forests and trees to our landscapes and livelihoods. The purpose of this publication is to provide a much wider audience with an understanding of why forests and trees matter for people, the planet and posterity.

Type of publication: Book Editor(s): David Ward Roubik Publishing house: FAO Year of publication: 2018 Pages: 324 p. ISBN: 978-92-5-130512-6 Agrovoc: pollination; pollinators; case studies; crops. Abstract: More than twenty years ago, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations contributed to the growing recognition of the role of pollination in agricultural production, with the publication of “The Pollination of Cultivated Plants in the Tropics”. Since that time, the appreciation of pollinators has grown, alongside the realization that we stand to lose them. But our knowledge and understanding of crop pollination, pollinator biology, and best management practices has also expanded over this time. This volume is the first of two “compendiums for practitioners”, sharing expert knowledge on all dimensions of crop pollination in both temperate and tropical zones. The focus in this first volume is on applied crop and system-specific pollination. Download file Cite this publication as: Roubik, D.W. (ed). 2018. Developing gender-sensitive value chains. Guidelines for practitioners Type of publication: Book Publishing house: FAO Year of publication: 2018 Pages: 115 p. ISBN: 978-92-5-130516-4

Gender

Agrovoc: gender; gender equity; guidelines; data analysis; assessment. Abstract: These guidelines aim to respond to these questions and support practitioners in translating the Gender-Sensitive Value Chain Framework, developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) into action (FAO, 2016a). Building on FAO's comparative advantage on gender in agriculture and food security, these guidelines are primarily intended to assist practitioners in designing and implementing interventions that provide women and men with equal opportunities to benefit from agrifood value chain development. They offer practical tools and examples of successful approaches to foster a more systematic integration of gender equality dimensions in value chain interventions in the agricultural sector and enhance the social impact of these interventions. The guidelines are targeted to practitioners in a wide range of organizations and institutions, including national governments, international and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), research institutes and the private sector. The publication consists of two main sections: Part 1: Gender-sensitive analysis of the value chain presents tools and resources to assess and select value chains from a gender perspective, and guides practitioners in the identification of the gender-based constraints (GBCs) that undermine both the performance of the chain and women's opportunities for economic empowerment. Part 2: Actions for addressing GBCs in value chain interventions considers the key constraints that practitioners are likely to encounter when analysing agrifood value chains from a gender perspective, and explores possible solutions to address them as an integral part of the value chain upgrading strategy. Publishing house: FAO Year of publication: 2018 Pages: 32 p. ISBN: 978-92-5-130418-1 Agrovoc: germplasm conservation; genetic resources conservation; biodiversity conservation; biodiversity; agrobiodiversity; documentation; information exchange; standard ontology; metadata standard; standardizing; standards; Abstract: Currently, millions of accessions are conserved in germplasm collections and breeding pools; many of them are duplicates with valuable information that is lost when the material is transferred from one holder to another. Additionally, different user communities such as plant breeders, data curators, researchers and extensionists, often follow different methods to assign identifiers, according to their needs. The lack of standardization had prevented the community from exchanging PGRFA data worldwide which had been for years one of the main challenges for the effective conservation and sustainable use of PGRFA. By using the DOIs standards adopted by the Governing Body of the International Treaty, users will be able to identify and document their plant material uniquely and permanently and will facilitate data interoperability among different systems. The booklet helps readers to understand how DOIs can be adopted in their daily work and integrated into their institutional workflow, including what data needs to be provided and how to do it. It has to parts: Part I of the Manual includes the Guidelines for the optimal use of Digital Object Identifiers as permanent unique identifiers for PGRFA - v.2 and Part II, Data required for the assignation of Digital Object Identifiers in the Global Information System v.2.1. Mainstreaming Agrobiodiversity in Sustainable Food System. Scientific Foundations for an Agrobiodiversity Index Type of publication: Book Editor(s): Walter de Boef, Marie Haga, Lindiwe Sibanda, MS Swaminathan, Paul Winters Publishing house: Bioversity International Year of publication: 2017 Pages: 157 p. ISBN: 978-92-9255-070-7 Agrovoc: biodivesity; food systems; nutrition; nutrition policies; human nutrition; farming systems; agrobiodiversity; sustainability. Abstract: As the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (2011–2020) reaches its midpoint, the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition has just begun (2016–2025). This five-year overlap of global action offers a rare opportunity to bring together biodiversity and nutrition in novel ways for positive benefits to both. When people think of good nutrition, and about the diverse food groups that should be in a balanced diet, they rarely think about where those foods come from. By the same token, when people think about biological diversity, they may think about our animals, plants and birds in the wild, but they may not make the link to the amazing diversity that contributes to our food systems – the awe-inspiring diversity of species and varieties of cereals, pulses, fruits, vegetables, animals and fish – which have been developed by farmers over millennia and which are adapted to local customs and to different environments. Those links between production and consumption are important to sustainable food systems in order to have the richest possible food diversity on plates, sustainably sourced from the biological diversity that underpins agricultural systems. The Convention on Biological Diversity – with partners including Bioversity International – has spearheaded for ten years a Cross-cutting Initiative on Biodiversity for Food and Nutrition. Much progress has been made in bridging agricultural biodiversity and nutrition in these ten years, but more can be done to integrate these two agendas. Silo thinking still prevails in many cases, leaving nutrition practitioners and agricultural practitioners blind to the benefits of agricultural biodiversity to healthy, year-round diets and to resilient, adapted farming systems. The Sustainable Development Goals provide a renewed impetus for a focus on using biodiversity for food and nutrition and linking that to the sustainability of farming systems. Mainstreaming biodiversity in sustainable food systems is vital if we are to achieve those Goals by 2030. Using biodiversity for sustainable farming systems that produce diverse, nutritious foods will contribute to the conservation of these precious resources; conserving biodiversity resources will make them available for future climate scenarios and today's nutrient needs. For this reason, the creation of an Agrobiodiversity Index, which can help bring production and consumption together for sustainable biodiversity-based solutions could go a long way to raise awareness about the multiple links between biodiversity, healthy nutrition and sustainable food production and, thereby, help promote the multiple aspects of sustainable food systems. global experts, not only from the case study countries but also from Brazil, China and other parts of Asia and Latin America. A good practice for diversity is defined as a system, organization or process that, over time and space, maintains, enhances and creates crop genetic diversity, and ensures its availability to and from farmers and other users. Drawing on experiences from a UNEP-GEF project on "Conservation and Sustainable Use of Wild and Cultivated Tropical Fruit Tree Diversity for Promoting Livelihoods, Food Security and Ecosystem Services", with case studies from India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, the authors show how methods for identifying good practices are still evolving and challenges in scaling-up remain. They identify key principles effective as a strategy for mainstreaming good practice into development efforts. Few books draw principles and lessons learned from good practices. This book fills this gap by combining good practices from the research project on tropical fruit trees with chapters from external experts to broaden its scope and relevance. Farmers' crop varieties and farmers' rights: challenges in taxonomy and law Type of publication: Book Editor(s): Michael Halewood Publishing house: Bioversity International Year of publication: 2016 Pages: 405 p. Journal/Series: Issues in Agricultural Biodiversity Series editors: Michael Halewood and Danny Hunter ISBN: 978-1-84407-890-5 Agrovoc: food security; genetic processes; sustainability; agricultural systems; crops; biodiversity; farmers; guidelines. Abstract: Over the last 50 years there has been a growing appreciation of the important role that farmers play in the development and conservation of crop genetic diversity, and the contribution of that diversity to agro-ecosystem resilience and food security. This book examines policies that aim to increase the share of benefits that farmers receive when others use the crop varieties that they have developed and managed, i.e., 'farmers varieties'. In so doing, the book addresses two fundamental questions. The first question is 'how do farmer management practices - along with other factors such as environment and the breeding systems of plants - affect the evolution and maintenance of discrete farmers' varieties?' The second question is 'how can policies that depend on being able to identify discrete plant varieties accommodate the agricultural realities associated with the generation, use and maintenance of farmers' varieties?' This focus on discreteness is topical because there are no fixed, internationally recognized taxonomic or legal definitions of farmers' varieties. And that presents a challenge when developing policies that involve making specific, discrete farmers' varieties the subject of legal rights or privileges. Community seed banks: origins, evolution and prospects Type of publication: Book Editor(s): Ronnie Vernooy, Pitambar Shrestha, Bhuwon Sthapit Publishing house: Bioversity International Year of publication: 2015 Pages: 270 p. Journal/Series: Issues in Agricultural Biodiversity Series editors: Michael Halewood and Danny Hunter ISBN: 978-0-415-70805-0 Agrovoc: gene banks; food security; genetic processes; sustainability; agricultural systems; seeds; biodiversity. Abstract: Community seed banks first appeared towards the end of the 1980s, established with the support of international and national non-governmental organizations. This book is the first to provide a global review of their development and includes a wide range of case studies. Countries that pioneered various types of community seed banks include Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Nepal, Nicaragua, the Philippines and Zimbabwe. In the North, a particular type of community seed bank emerged known as a seed-savers network. Such networks were first established in Australia, Canada, the UK and the USA before spreading to other countries. Over time, the number and diversity of seed banks has grown. In Nepal, for example, there are now more than 100 self-described community seed banks whose functions range from pure conservation to commercial seed production. In Brazil, community seed banks operate in various regions of the country. Surprisingly, despite 25 years of history and the rapid growth in number, organizational diversity and geographical coverage of community seed banks, recognition of their roles and contributions has remained scanty. The book reviews their history, evolution, experiences, successes and failures (and reasons why), challenges and prospects. It fills a significant gap in the literature on agricultural biodiversity and conservation, and their contribution to food sovereignty and security.
