Lucrările din seria Written portraits prezentate de Gabriel Marian cu ocazia expoziției The map is/not the territory, reprezintă pentru noi peisaje de explorat, însă pentru artist acestea sunt rezultatul unor numeroase călătorii pe aceste teritorii, călătorii care l-au determinat să le cartografieze.

Dar, mă întreb, ce este o hartă? Corespunde sau nu teritoriului?

Conform artistului, aceste hărți nu cuprind doar teritoriul ci și cultura, tradițiile, persoanele care îl caracterizează: sunt simbolul unui popor. Cu siguranță nu este vorba de hărți „tradiționale”, desigur, regăsim inscripții și linii, care ar putea reprezenta străzile și fluviile cu propriile nume, dar teritoriul este descris de chipul celui care îl locuiește sau care, în mod legitim, ar trebui să-l locuiască.

Subliniez: în mod legitim…

Nu este vorba doar despre a trăi fizic într-un loc, ci și despre a avea libertatea de a respecta cultura unui popor, interesele, alegerile și chiar și natura fiecărui individ. Aceste portrete sunt instrumentul pe care Marian îl folosește pentru a participa constructiv la dezbaterea actuală privitoare la consecințele colonizării și a încercărilor de decolonizare, și, mai ales din punct de vedere cultural (să ne amintim că „harta este/nu este teritoriul”), referindu-se la concepte precum pământ și teritoriu, deteritorializare și reteritorializare elaborate de francezii Gilles Deleuze și Félix Guattari.

Acest interes deosebit al artistului pentru fenomenul pierderii identității, cauzată de colonialism, derivă și din istoria Țării sale: timp de secole România a fost ocupată de diverse imperii, printre cele mai durabile și de impact fiind cel roman, otoman și rus. Chiar și astăzi, România este centrul unor astfel de dezbateri care privesc atât Transilvania, anterior regiune independentă, cât și ceea ce se definește ca o auto-colonizare, adică tendința poporului de a se asemăna tot mai mult Țărilor din Uniunea Europeană.

Condus de aceste fapte, artistul încearcă să deconstruiască privirea colonială a artei europene, ceea ce Deleuze și Guattari ar defini prin termenul de teritorializare, care în trecut impunea, într-o perspectivă eurocentrică, canoane de frumusețe formalizate în baza proporțiilor corpului omului caucazian, excluzând toate acele fizionomii „exotice” care nu erau conforme standardelor. Prin portretele sale, Marian pune la îndoială ponderea acestei „tradiții” culturale – fără, însă, a anula istoria artei, deoarece anularea culturii nu generează o discuție, ci furie – și explorează, precum un turist

respectuos, peisajul acestor chipuri diferite, abordând provocările specifice diferitelor trăsături somatice.

Alegerea subiectelor este dictată de fascinațiile artistului, unele pot fi personaje istorice care îl inspiră, altele sunt chipuri găsite ocazional pe internet, care îl impresionează datorită proporțiilor și fizionomiilor, unele fiind considerate de acesta „renascentiste” (cum ar fi Primavera MMXXI). Mai mult, lumina joacă un rol fundamental în crearea operelor, modul în care aceasta atinge și sculptează un chip devine un teren de experimentare pentru combinarea nuanțelor markerelor acrilice și a scrierilor care trasează liniile.

Marea capacitate a artistului este cea de a duce aceste chipuri în afara liniei temporale, oferind nemurirea chiar și persoanelor anonime și marginalizate, dar și omagiind personalități precum Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (The body as such). Acest lucru este posibil datorită amestecului reușit dintre trecut și prezent, dintre textele autorilor istorici și folosirea unei caligrafii foarte asemănătoare cu cea folosită în cea mai recentă Street art. În ceea ce privește textele citate în operele sale, Marian se dovedește a fi un artist de mare cultură; inspirat de o pluralitate de interese, el variază între literatură, poezie, filozofie și muzică, precum și între discipline artistice, fără teama de a juxtapune în această serie - aproape în întregime inedită - poetele japoneze ale secolului al XVIII-lea (Fukuda Chiko-ni pentru lucrarea Peonies), autori consacrați din secolele al XIX-lea și al XX-lea, precum Emily Dickinson (pentru Spectral smile și Electric spring) și Dylan Thomas (pentru Wasted Energy și Rage against the diying of the light), activiști pentru drepturile populațiilor afro-americane (cum ar fi Maya Angelou pentru God is a woman too) și cântăreți (cum ar fi Endre Norvik pentru Storm) din vremurile noastre.

Scrisul, coprotagonist al operei, alături de semnul pictural pentru a contura chipul, întărește mesajul care se vrea transmis, prin aceasta putându-se evidenția temele cheie ale cercetării artistului: unele cu caracter universal precum binomul viață-moarte și relația om-natură iar altele legate de dezbateri mai actuale precum discriminarea de rasă, gen, religie și orientare sexuală și, mai exact, colonialismul.

Pentru a încuraja meditația asupra condițiilor populațiilor discriminate de viziunea occidentală, fie că sunt afro-americane, asiatice sau sud-americane, artistul se folosește de ideile activiștilor implicați personal în aceste lupte, un exemplu este Márcia Kambeba - menționată în operele Silent warrior, Native dream și Native spirit – care, prin poeziile sale, descrie modul în care popoarele indigene nu și-au pierdut esența în ciuda faptului că trăiesc în oraș și propune un proces de decolonizare.

Scriitorii aleși de artist sunt și purtători de cuvânt ai problemelor interne occidentale precum Margaret Atwood (pentru operele Autumn is/not și The moment), care își exprimă preocuparea pentru degradarea neîncetată a civilizației de astăzi și a politicii acesteia (intelectuala se numără printre autorii citați de Marian și cu privire la feminism, alături de Virginia Woolf), și Walt Whitman, promotor al democrației și libertății individuale (pentru lucrarea Newton’s prism care, prin prisma culorile sale, ia numele, tocmai, de la curcubeul descoperit de Newton prin lumină).

Mai mult, după cum s-a menționat anterior, artistul se lasă influențat de ceea ce ascultă - ca în cazul Storm și Final bow - dar și citind studii recente privind cariera sa în lumea artei contemporane, astfel în opera Blue career artistul își arată preocuparea și tristețea - alegerea culorii în sine îi identifică sentimentul - pentru viitorul artiștilor: conform unui studiu a lui S. Fraiberger, R. Sinatra, M. Resch, C. Riedl și A. Barabási destinul și succesul lor este legat de posibilitatea

sau nu de a accesa instituții prestigioase la începutul carierei lor. Și, mai general, acest sector este discriminat în multe țări întrucât este considerat mai mult o distracție decât un loc de muncă real și din acest motiv nu este protejat la fel ca locurile de muncă din alte domenii considerate mai „utile”.

Revenind la folosirea scrisului, opera lui Gabriel Marian se încadrează în istoria artei ca o consecință logică și liniară a tuturor acelor curente care au făcut din cuvânt un coprotagonist în compoziția artistică, de la poezia vizuală la Cuvintele în libertate ale Futurismului, de la Dadaism la Suprarealism, pentru a trece din anii ‘60 cu exponenți precum Merz, Boetti și Kosuth până la cele mai recente genuri artistice precum Arta Stradală. Dacă ne gândim la Occident, găsim imediat legături între artă și scriere în secolul al XX-lea, în timp ce devine mai dificil să ne gândim la experiențele anterioare - dacă nu la vreo tradiție sporadică precum literele miniate sau simplele inscripții pe tablouri -, în timp ce în culturile Orientului Îndepărtat această legătură găsește dovezi consolidate de-a lungul secolelor – artistul însuși își manifestă fascinația pentru caligrafia acestor meleaguri ceea ce îl determină să îi aducă un omagiu în lucrarea Peonies –.

Scrisul este capabil să caracterizeze identitatea unui popor fiind un aspect cheie al culturii pe care o reprezintă, nu întâmplător însă, cele mai recognoscibile și recunoscute sunt cele care au îmbrățișat desenul ca parte integrantă, precum petroglifele, hieroglifele egiptene și pictogramele chinezești.

Un alt aspect fundamental în operele lui Marian este linia, și în consecință gestul din care acesta prinde viață, din acest motiv nu toate lucrările conțin paragrafe de text. De fapt, unele dintre acestea se concentrează prin frumusețea liniei în sine și construcția acesteia, încercând uneori să elibereze mâna de voința minții, conform practicii zen, care creează mai mult sau mai puțin conștient curbe topografice pe fețele grifonate ale subiecților săi (de exemplu New territory și Smile in the dark), alteori creând rațional linii cu forme mai geometrice care amintesc de vechile hărți de navigație (Native spirit).

Pe parcursul secolului al XX-lea, aceste două metode au fost dezvoltate de diverși artiști care au eliberat capacitatea expresivă a liniei de sub controlul minții, precum Pollock și Twombly, sau care au teoretizat o utilizare conștientă a acesteia, precum Kandinsky, Klee și Picasso.

Inspirându-se tot din conceptele de abstractizare și desen ca „arta de a plimba o linie” teoretizate de Klee, Marian încearcă să dezlege nodul reprezentării figurative, mai ales în raport cu portretul, care, spre deosebire de primele opere asupra tematicii, în aceste noi opere se confruntă cu un stil mai liber și mai puțin programatic, uneori mai expresionist și alteori mai caligrafic.

Un alt artist care îl inspiră pe Marian este Magritte pentru felul în care se joacă cu cuvintele și imaginile atât atunci când una integrează și completează mesajul celeilalte, cât și când cele două forme servesc la întărirea reciprocă fără a crea semnificații ulterioare; chiar titlul expoziției este un omagiu adus lucrării La Trahison des images a pictorului francez unde pipa reprezentată este și nu este obiectul în cauză.

Cuplul învingător, format din acești ultimi doi artiști, îi permite lui Marian să-și dezvolte cercetările în direcții diferite, care apar ca o serie înlănțuită de evoluții. În primul caz scrisul este bine diferențiat de imagine și are funcția de a comenta, îmbogăți sau contrazice figurația; în al doilea caz, devine element constitutiv al reprezentării vizuale, rămânând parțial lizibil sau menţinându-şi structura grafică, în acest fel mesajul este mai greu de citit şi această din urmă dificultate devi-

ne informația însăși; în al treilea și ultimul caz, scrierea este sugerată de linia care mimează caracteristicile sale formale rezultând în cea pe care o putem asocia scrierii asemice. În concluzie, artistul-explorator ne cere să îl însoțim pe aceste meleaguri pentru a le descoperi frumusețile și ne invită să cartografiem noi teritorii, să creăm noi drumuri care să ne unească. Gabriel Marian ne cere contribuția, aportul tuturor, pentru a scrie cuvinte care să modeleze chipul unei societăți fără discriminări de orice fel.

Maps to the soul / Hărți către suflet 1. Raportul cu suprafața picturii, atât al artistului cât și al privitorului Ca artist, mi se pare important să vorbesc despre modul în care am realizat lucrările din această serie (și de altfel cel în care lucrez de câțiva ani, de când explorez aceasta tehnică relativ nouă a markerelor cu vopsea acrilică). La fel cum impresioniștii au profitat de progresele tehnologice și industriale ale epocii lor (inventarea tuburilor de vopsea, a truselor de pictură și șevaletelor portabile etc.) ceea ce le-a permis să picteze în aer liber, apariția recentă pe piață a markerelor cu acrilic mi-a permis să dezvolt o abordare a liniei (și compoziției) care era mult mai dificil de realizat cu tehnicile și materialele clasice, pensula, șevaletul etc. Aceste inovații au schimbat inclusiv modul în care mă raportez ca artist la suprafața picturală – un raport nu doar concret, pozițional, cât și simbolic, care nu poate fi neglijat. In acest sens cuvintele lui Jackson Pollock ne ajută să înțelegem mai ușor istoria diferitelor abordări artistice actuale. Avem pe de o parte gesturile pictorului de șevalet, care indică o importanță a distanței între artist și operă, mai mult chiar : un fel de coregrafie minimală, compusă din apropieri și depărtări ritmice prin care artistul controlează suprafața fixată în fața lui și opera în sine, un control al obiectivității ego-ului asupra materiei pe care acesta o animă și îi dă formă ; un dans sec, bine controlat, cu gesturi limitate și pași mereu asemănători.

In schimb, raportul cu pânza al unui pictor expresionist-acționist ca Pollock îl aduce în situația de a se imersa în suprafața picturală. Un nou tip de dans care nu se mai execută în raport cu pânza ca o alteritate, ci înăuntrul (pe suprafața) pânzei, ca o integrare a artistului în compoziție. Încât nu mai putem decide la fel de precis dacă și în ce măsură ego-ul pictorului controlează coregrafia și gesturile, putem la fel de bine să presupunem că suprafața de lucru însăși (dimensiunile și dispunerea ei) induce anumite mișcări și « pași de dans », după cum putem observa în mărturiile lui Jackson Pollock: On the floor I am more at ease. I feel nearer, more part of the painting, since this way I can walk around it, work from the four sides and literally be in the painting. […]

You can’t learn techniques and then try to become a painter. Techniques are a result.1 Artistul nu se mai poziționează « în fața » obiectului de reprezentat, sau a lucrării care va rezulta din această observare detașată, distantă, mai mult sau mai puțin obiectivă, ci se situează din start “în” pictură, într-o lucrare care nu mai trimite la / nu „reprezintă” un obiect exterior, și care dirijează gesturile artistului cel puțin în aceeași măsură în care acesta încearcă sa le dirijeze el însuși. Pollock era conștient atât de tradiția orientală a picturii pe suprafețe orizontale, cât și de cea (mai apropiata geografic) a practicilor artistice ale amerindienilor pe care le-a putut observa în cursul anilor 1940 în cadrul unor demonstrații la Museum of Modern Art. In cazul meu, funcționarea specifică a markerelor cu acrilic (și anume vopseaua lichidă care se scurge prin vârful poros) impune din start lucrul pe o suprafață orizontală, pentru a asigura un flux constant și puternic al culorii, și obținerea unor linii neîntrerupte de lungime cât mai mare (o lungime dictată astfel nu de limitarea instrumentului/materialului, ci de energia gestului mâinii artistului). In plus, de cele mai multe ori e nevoie ca suprafața să fie suficient de rigidă ca să reziste la apăsarea vârfului de marker, așa încât pânzele întinse pe șasiul tradițional sunt adesea inadecvate, sau necesită consolidarea temporară ori definitivă prin diverse mijloace. Așa încât diferențele devin evidente atât în raport cu pictura de șevalet, cât și cu tehnicile de dripping practicate de expresioniștii abstracți americani.

In ce privește raportul privitorului cu picturile din această serie, poziția față de acestea determină efecte optice diferite.

De la distanță ele sunt concepute să dea iluzia unor reprezentări figurative, realiste. Pe măsura ce sunt privite mai de aproape, tehnica în care sunt realizare scoate la iveală construcția lor, care arată tot mai mult a compoziție abstractă, a întrepătrundere de linii și pete colorate, de litere și figuri asemice. Astfel încât recomand alternarea acestor poziții pentru o mai deplină apreciere a diferitelor niveluri de percepție a lucrărilor.

2. Text și imagine Prezența textelor în lucrările mele s-a dezvoltat de-a lungul mai multor ani de preocupări pentru această coabitare, perioadă în care am descoperit și m-am familiarizat și cu opera a numeroși artiști care s-au interesat de abordări similare.

Dar înainte de a oferi câteva sugestii despre relația dintre text și imagine, vreau să prezint viziunea mea despre relația dintre privitor și textul-în-imagine.

Această construcție intricată a sensurilor și mesajelor din interiorul unei imagini artistice care include și semne lingvistice intră la rândul ei în relație cu modul de prezentare în cadrul unei expuneri expoziționale sau de altă natură (imprimată de exemplu), în măsura în care proiectul estetic pe care îl propun implică și un paratext aproape la fel de complex. Acest tip de prezentare transformă simpla expunere într-o experiență care se apropie de un happening imersiv, deoarece

mișcarea privitorul prin fața exponatelor este încetinită, temporar blocată, oprită de prezența unor texte de dimensiuni considerabile.

Astfel, prezentarea pe simeze este cel mai adesea însoțită de etichete de dimensiuni relativ mari, care includ nu doar titlul și informațiile despre obiectul de artă, ci și totalitatea sau fragmente din textele utilizate ca element estetic/compozițional în imaginea expusă. Această modalitate de prezentare induce din start privitorului ideea că semnele lingvistice prezente în imagine au o semnificație precisă și dau pentru început iluzia unei comunicări directe și relativ simple.

Totuși, acesta este exact punctul în care percepția respectivului obiect artistic se complică prin intermediul mai multor factori: relațiile foarte specifice (și variabile) dintre imagine și text, denotația și conotațiile mesajului presupus, modul de integrare în imagine și dialogul acestuia cu modul convențional de prezentare a textului literar.

Privitorul se va regăsi așadar pentru început într-o situație de incertitudine cu privire la rolul respectivelor texte în imagine: explicație? ilustrare? denotare? comentariu? Apoi, într-o a doua etapă, ar putea începe să-și pună întrebări similare despre statutul imaginii. Aceste nelămuriri devin cu atât mai creative cu cât aparentele „mesaje” vehiculate de semnele iconice și lingvistice sunt adesea divergente sau nu oferă indicii ușor lizibile despre raporturile dintre ele, obligând astfel publicul la mobilizarea unor resurse suplimentare de creativitate pentru găsirea sau inventarea de raporturi semnificative acceptabile. Care ar putea fi de exemplu relația dintre un portret senin impregnat de o melancolie subtilă (care în plus pare o aluzie la pictura renascentistă) și un text poetic intens și agitat cum sunt versurile scriitoarei native braziliene Marcia Kambeba? Sau poezia incomodă a lui Margaret Atwood? Pus în fața unei asemenea provocări (care ar putea fi numită și „puzzle”, în sensul de provocare ludică) capacitatea interpretativă a publicului (în caz că acesta nu renunță pur și simplu și abandonează vizionarea lucrărilor) este supusă la un efort considerabil care stimulează un anumit tip de poiesis / creaţie cultural/ă. Încercând să identifice sensuri care să țină cont de ambele tipuri de semne și mesaje percepute, privitorul poate nu-și dă seama că de fapt, în loc să „decripteze” un mesaj misterios, realizează ceva mult mai important : participă la crearea operei de artă ca proces care implică minimum două ființe umane.

3. Compoziție Lucrările din această serie prezintă două tendințe relativ divergente, care se manifestă la momente diferite în relația mea cu imaginea. Pe de o parte simt uneori nevoia unei proliferări vizuale, a creșterii complexității compozițiilor într-o direcție care confirmă interesul și pasiunea mea durabile pentru estetica barocă și rococo. Compozițiile devin astfel locul unor suprapuneri complexe (layering) asociate cu juxtapuneri din care rezultă efecte de hazard controlat, sau mai precis tranziții neașteptate de la acumulări cantitative la salturi calitative/vizuale: efectele optice rezultate din aceste proliferări oferă mai mult decât o simplă sumă de linii și forme: cromatic dar și formal, rezultă iluzii noi, pe care ochiul le percepe diferențiat în funcție de poziția față de lucrare. E o formă de pointillism dusă mai departe, o tehnică în care punctele se transformă în linii intersectate sau alăturate.

În alte momente, simt nevoia unei reduceri a nivelului de stimuli, situație în care compozițiile devin mai simple, paleta de culori se reduce, contemplația se desfășoară pe alte coordonate, care se apropie de ceea ce occidentalii înțeleg prin zen sau „minimalism”. Doar că e un minimalism care traduce o meditaţie aprofundată, nu doar o lipsă a inspiraţiei sau o relaţie panicată cu pânza albă.

Astfel încât ansamblul acestor lucrări se constituie ca o paletă de atitudini estetice și de manifestări afective care acoperă un întreg spectru de valori: de la cele mai intense până la cele mai subtile. O explorare a diverselor regiuni ale sufletului artistului, realizată prin intermediul unei serii de portrete cu fizionomii considerate cel mai adesea „exotice”, dar care se dovedesc a fi, în cele din urmă, autoportrete ale autorului, la fel ca orice altă lucrare artistică.

The Portrait Is/Not the Face

The works from the Written Portraits series presented by Gabriel Marian on the occasion of the exhibition The Map Is/ Not the Territory represent for us new landscapes to explore, but for the artist, they are the result of numerous trips to these lands, trips that led him to map the territories.

But, I wonder, what is a map? Does it correspond to the territory or not?

According to the artist, these maps include not only the territory but also the culture, the traditions, the individuals who characterize it: they are the symbol of a people. These are certainly not “traditional” maps, of course, as we find inscriptions and lines, which could represent streets and rivers with their own names, but the territory is described by the face of the one who inhabits it, or who, legitimately, should inhabit it.

I emphasize: legitimately...

It’s not just about physically living in a place, but it’s also about having the freedom to respect a people’s culture, interests, choices, and even the nature of each individual. These portraits are the tool that Marian uses to constructively participate in the current debate regarding the consequences of colonization and attempts at decolonization, and above all from a cultural point of view (remember that “the map is/not the territory”), referring to concepts such as land and territory, of deterritorialisation and reterritorialisation developed by the French Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari.

This special interest of the artist for the phenomenon of loss of identity, caused by colonialism, also derives from the history of his Country: for centuries Romania was occupied by various empires, among the most durable and impactful being the Roman, Ottoman and Russian. Even nowadays, Romania is the centre of such debates that concern both Transylvania, formerly an independent region, and what is defined as a self-colonization, that is, the tendency of the people to resemble more and more the Countries of the European Union.

Driven by these facts, the artist tries to dismantle the colonial view of the European art, what Deleuze and Guattari would define by the term of territorialisation, which in the past imposed, in a Eurocentric perspective, canons of beauty formalized based on the proportions of the Caucasian human body, excluding all those “exotic” physiognomies that were not consistent with the standards. Through his portraits, Marian questions the weight of this cultural “tradition” - without, however, cancelling the history of art, because cancelling culture does not generate a discussion, but anger -

and explores, like a respectful tourist, the landscape of these different faces, putting himself to test through the different somatic traits.

The choice of themes is dictated by the artist’s fascinations, some may be historical figures that inspire him, others are faces found by chance on the internet that impress him due to their proportions and physiognomies, sometimes being considered by him in the “Renaissance” style (such as Primavera MMXXI). Moreover, light plays a fundamental role in the creation of the works; the way it hits and sculpts a face becomes a testing ground for combining the shades of acrylic markers and the line-drawing writings.

The artist’s great ability is that of taking these faces outside the timeline, offering immortality even to anonymous and marginalized individuals, as well as paying homage to personalities such as Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (The Body as Such). This is possible due to the successful mix of past and present, of the texts of historical authors and the use of a calligraphy very similar to that used in the latest Street art.

Regarding the texts quoted in his works, Marian proves to be an artist of great culture; inspired by a plurality of interests, he varies between literature, poetry, philosophy and music, as well as between artistic subjects, without fear of juxtaposing in this series - almost entirely ground-breaking - the Japanese poetesses of the 18th century (Fukuda Chiko-ni for the work Peonies), recognised authors from the 19th and 20th centuries, such as Emily Dickinson (for Spectral Smile and Electric Spring) and Dylan Thomas (for Wasted Energy and Rage against the Dying of the Light), activists for the rights of African-American populations (such as Maya Angelou for God is a Woman Too) and singers (such as Endre Norvik for Storm) of our time.

The writing, co-protagonist of the work, together with the pictorial sign to outline the face, strengthens the message wanted to be conveyed, thereby being able to highlight the key themes of the artist’s research: some of universal nature, such as the life-death binomial and the relationship between the human and the nature, and others related to more current debates, such as discrimination based on race, gender, religion and sexual orientation and, more specifically, colonialism.

In order to encourage meditation on the conditions of the populations discriminated by the Western vision, whether they are African-American, Asian or South American, the artist uses the ideas of activists personally involved in these struggles, an example is Márcia Kambeba - mentioned in the works Silent Warrior, Native Dream and Native Spirit – who, through her poems, describes how indigenous peoples have not lost their essence despite living in the city and proposes a decolonization process.

The writers chosen by the artist are also spokespersons of internal Western problems such as Margaret Atwood (for the works Autumn Is/Not and The Moment), who expresses her concern for the incessant degradation of today’s civilization and its politics (the intellectual is among the authors also cited by Marian referring to feminism, along with Virginia Woolf), and Walt Whitman, promoter of democracy and individual freedom (for the work Newton’s Prism which, due to its colours, takes its name, precisely, from the rainbow discovered by Newton through light).

Moreover, as previously mentioned, the artist indulges in what he hears - as in the case of Storm and Final Bow - but also by reading recent studies regarding his career in the world of contemporary art, thus, in the work Blue Career, the

artist shows his concern and sadness - the choice of colour itself identifies his feeling - for the future of artists: according to a study by S. Fraiberger, R. Sinatra, M. Resch, C. Riedl and A. Barabási, their destiny and success are linked to the possibility or not to access prestigious institutions early in their careers. And more generally, this sector is discriminated against in many countries, as it is considered more of a pastime than a real job and for this reason it is not protected in the same way as jobs in other fields considered more “useful”.

Returning to the use of writing, Gabriel Marian’s work falls into the history of art as a logical and linear consequence of all those currents that made the word a co-protagonist in artistic composition, from visual poetry to the Free Words of Futurism, from Dadaism to Surrealism, to go from the 60s with exponents such as Merz, Boetti and Kosuth to the latest artistic genres like Street Art. If we think of the West, we immediately find links between art and writing in the 20th century, while it becomes more difficult to think of earlier experiences - if not some sporadic tradition such as midget letters or simple inscriptions on paintings -, while in the cultures of the Far East this link finds evidence consolidated over the centuries - the artist himself shows his fascination for the calligraphy of these lands, which leads him to pay tribute to it in the work Peonies -.

Writing is able to characterize the identity of a people, being a key aspect of the culture it represents; not by chance, however, the most recognizable and recognised are those that have embraced drawing as an integral part, such as petroglyphs, Egyptian hieroglyphs and Chinese pictograms.

Another fundamental aspect in Marian’s works is the line, and consequently the gesture from which it comes to life, for this reason not all works have paragraphs of text. In fact, some of them focus on the beauty of the line itself and its construction, sometimes trying to free the hand from the will of the mind, according to the Zen practice, which more or less consciously creates topographical curves on the scribbled faces of his subjects (e.g., New Territory and Smile in the Dark), and other times rationally creating lines with more geometric shapes reminiscent of old navigation maps (Native Spirit).

During the 20th century, these two methods were developed by various artists who freed the expressive capacity of the line from the control of the mind, such as Pollock and Twombly, or who theorized a conscious use of it, such as Kandinsky, Klee and Picasso.

Also inspired by the concepts of abstraction and drawing, such as “the art of walking a line”, theorized by Klee, Marian tries to unravel the knot of figurative representation, especially in relation to the portrait, which, unlike the first works on the subject, in these new works he faces a freer and less programmatic style, sometimes more expressionistic and sometimes more calligraphic.

Another artist who inspires Marian is Magritte for the way he plays with words and images, both when one integrates and complements the message of the other, and when the two forms serve to reinforce each other without creating further meanings; the very title of the exhibition is a tribute to the French painter’s La Trahison des Images, where the pipe represented is and is not the object in question.

The winning couple, formed by these last two artists, allows Marian to develop his research in different directions, which appear as a chained series of developments. In the first case, the writing is well differentiated from the image and has

the function of commenting, enriching or contradicting the figuration; in the second case, it becomes a constitutive element of the visual representation, remaining partially readable or maintaining its graphic structure, in this way the message is more difficult to read and this latter difficulty becomes the information itself; in the third and last case, the writing is suggested by the line that mimics its formal characteristics resulting in what we can associate with asemic writing.

In conclusion, the explorer-artist asks us to accompany him on these lands to discover their beauties and invites us to map out new territories, to create new roads that will unite us. Gabriel Marian asks for our contribution, everyone’s input, to write words that shape the face of a society without discrimination of any kind.

Maps to the Soul 1. Relationship with the surface of the painting, both of the artist and the viewer As an artist, I think it’s important to talk about how I made the works in this series (and for that matter the one I’ve been working on for a few years now, since I’ve been exploring this relatively new technique of acrylic paint markers). Just as the Impressionists took advantage of the technological and industrial advances of their time (the invention of paint tubes, painting kits and portable easels etc.), which allowed them to paint outdoors, the recent release onto the market of acrylic markers allowed me to develop an approach to line (and composition) that was much more difficult to achieve with the classical techniques and materials, the brush, the easel etc. These innovations have also changed the way I relate as an artist to the pictorial surface – a relationship not only concrete, positional, but also symbolic, which cannot be neglected. In this sense, Jackson Pollock’s words help us understand more easily the history of the various current artistic approaches. On the one hand, we have the gestures of the easel painter, which indicate the importance of the distance between the artist and the work, even more: a kind of minimal choreography, composed of rhythmic approaches and distances through which the artist controls the surface fixed in front of him/her and the work itself, a control of the ego’s objectivity over the matter he/she animates and shapes; a dry, well-controlled dance with limited gestures and ever-similar steps.

Instead, the relationship with the canvas of an expressionist-actionist painter like Pollock brings him in the situation of immersing himself in the pictorial surface. A new type of dance that is no longer performed in relation to the canvas as an alterity, but inside (on the surface of) the canvas, as an integration of the artist into the composition. While we can no longer precisely decide whether and to what extent the painter’s ego controls the choreography and the gestures, we may as well assume that the working surface itself (its sizes and layout) induces certain movements and “dance steps”, as we can see in the testimonies of Jackson Pollock: On the floor I am more at ease. I feel nearer, more part of the painting, since this way I can walk around it, work from the four sides and literally be in the painting. […]

Art is coming face to face with yourself. […]

My painting does not come from the easel... On the floor I am more at ease. […]

You can’t learn techniques and then try to become a painter. Techniques are a result.1 The artist no longer positions himself “in front” of the object to be represented, or of the work that will result from this detached, distant, more or less objective observation, but is positioned from the start “in” the painting, in a work that no longer refers to / does not “represent” an external object, and which directs the artist’s gestures at least as much as he tries to direct them himself. Pollock was aware of both the Eastern tradition of painting on horizontal surfaces and the (geographically closest) Native American artistic practices that he could notice during the 1940s, during demonstrations at the Museum of Modern Art. In my case, the specific operation of acrylic markers (namely the liquid paint that flows through the porous tip) requires from the start to work on a horizontal surface, to ensure a constant and strong flow of colour, and to obtain uninterrupted lines as long as possible (a length thus dictated not by the limitation of the instrument/material, but by the energy of the gesture of the artist’s hand). In addition, most of the time the surface needs to be stiff enough to withstand the pressing of the marker tip, so canvases stretched on traditional chassis are often inadequate, or require temporary or permanent reinforcement by various means. So that the differences become obvious both in relation to the easel painting and to the dripping techniques practiced by the American abstract expressionists.

Regarding the viewer’s relationship with the paintings in this series, the position relative to them determines different optical effects. From a distance, they are designed to give the illusion of figurative, realistic representations. As they are looked at more closely, the technique in which they are made reveals their construction, which shows more and more an abstract composition, an interpenetration of coloured lines and spots, of asemic letters and shapes. So I recommend alternating these positions for a fuller appreciation of the different levels of perception of the works.

2. Text and image The presence of texts in my works developed over several years of concern with this cohabitation, during which time I also discovered and became familiar with the work of numerous artists who were interested in similar approaches.

But before I offer some suggestions about the relationship between text and image, I want to present my view of the relationship between the viewer and the text-in-the-image.

This intricate construction of meanings and messages within an artistic image that also includes linguistic signs is in turn related to the way it is presented in an exhibition or other display (printed, for example), to the extent that the aesthetic project that I propose also involves an almost equally complex paratext. This type of presentation transforms the simple

exhibition into an experience that approaches an immersive happening, because the viewer’s movement in front of the exhibits is slowed down, temporarily blocked, stopped by the presence of texts of considerable size.

Thus, the presentation on panels is most often accompanied by relatively large labels, which include not only the title and information about the work of art, but also all or fragments of the texts used as an aesthetic/compositional element in the displayed image. This manner of presentation induces the viewer from the start the idea that the linguistic signs present in the image have a precise meaning and initially give the illusion of a direct and relatively simple communication. However, this is precisely the point where the perception of the said work of art gets complicated by means of several factors: the very specific (and variable) relations between the image and the text, the denotation and connotations of the supposed message, the way it integrates into the image and its dialogue with the conventional way of presenting the literary text.

The viewer will therefore find himself/herself initially in a situation of uncertainty regarding the role of the respective texts in the image: explanation? Illustration? Denotation? Comment? Then, in a second stage, he/she might start asking himself/herself similar questions about the status of the image. These confusions become all the more creative as the apparent “messages” conveyed by the iconic and linguistic signs are often divergent or do not provide easily readable clues about the relationships between them, thus forcing the audience to mobilize additional resources of creativity to find or invent acceptable meaningful relationships. For example, what could be the relationship between a serene portrait imbued with a subtle melancholy (which also seems an allusion to the Renaissance painting) and an intense and agitated poetic text, such as the lyrics of the native Brazilian writer Marcia Kambeba? Or Margaret Atwood’s uncomfortable poetry? Faced with such a challenge (which could also be called a “puzzle”, in the sense of a playful challenge) the audience’s interpretative capacity (in case it does not simply give up and abandon viewing the works) is subjected to a considerable effort that stimulates a certain type of cultural poiesis / creation. By trying to identify meanings that take into account both types of perceived signs and messages, the viewer may not realize that in fact, instead of “decrypting” a mysterious message, he/she is doing something much more important: he/she is participating in the creation of the work of art as a process involving at least two human beings.

3. Composition The works in this series show two relatively divergent tendencies that manifest themselves at different times in my relationship with the image. On the one hand, I sometimes feel the need for a visual proliferation, an increase in the complexity of the compositions in a direction that confirms my enduring interest and passion for baroque and rococo aesthetics. The compositions thus become the site of a complex layering associated with juxtapositions resulting in controlled hazard effects, or more precisely unexpected transitions from quantitative accumulations to qualitative/visual leaps: the optical effects resulting from these proliferations offer more than a simple sum of lines and shapes: chromatically but also formally, new illusions result, which the eye perceives differently depending on the position in relation to

the work. It’s an advanced form of pointillism, a technique where dots turn into intersecting or adjacent lines.

At other times, I feel the need for a reduction in the level of stimuli, a situation in which the compositions become simpler, the colour palette is reduced, the contemplation unfolds on other coordinates, which are closer to what Westerners understand by Zen or “minimalism”. It’s just that it’s a minimalism that translates to deep meditation, not just a lack of inspiration or a panicked relationship with the white canvas.

So that the whole of these works is constituted as a palette of aesthetic attitudes and affective manifestations that cover a whole spectrum of values: from the most intense to the most subtle. An exploration of the various regions of the artist’s soul, carried out through a series of portraits with physiognomies most often considered “exotic”, but which ultimately turn out to be self-portraits of the author, just like any other work of art.

Quantifying reputation and success in art S. P. Fraiberger, R. Sinatra, M. Resch, C. Riedl, A.-L. Barabási In areas of human activity where performance is difficult to quantify in an objective fashion, reputation and networks of influence play a key role in determining access to resources and rewards.

To understand the role of these factors, we reconstructed the exhibition history of half a million artists, mapping out the coexhibition network that captures the movement of art between institutions.

Centrality within this network captured institutional prestige, allowing us to explore the career trajectory of individual artists in terms of access to coveted institutions.

Early access to prestigious central institutions offered life-long access to high-prestige venues and reduced dropout rate.

By contrast, starting at the network periphery resulted in a high dropout rate, limiting access to central institutions. [...]

The portrait is/not the face

I lavori della serie Written portraits, presentati da Gabriel Marian in occasione della mostra The map is/not the territory, sono per noi paesaggi ancora da esplorare, per l’artista invece sono il risultato di numerosi viaggi in queste terre, viaggi che l’hanno portato a mapparne i territori.

Ma, mi chiedo, cos’è una mappa? Corrisponde o no al territorio?

Secondo l’artista queste carte non racchiudono solo il territorio ma anche la cultura, le tradizioni, le persone che lo caratterizzano: sono il simbolo di un popolo. Di certo non si tratta di mappe “tradizionali”, sono sì presenti scritte e linee, che potrebbero essere le strade e i fiumi con i loro nomi, ma il territorio è rappresentato dal volto di chi lo vive o che legittimamente dovrebbe viverlo.

Sottolineo: legittimamente…

Non si intende solo vivere fisicamente un luogo ma anche avere la libertà di rispettare la cultura di un popolo, gli interessi, le scelte e persino la natura di ogni singolo individuo. Questi ritratti sono lo strumento che Marian utilizza per partecipare in modo costruttivo all’attuale dibattito riguardante le conseguenze della colonizzazione e dei tentativi di decolonizzazione, anche e soprattutto in chiave culturale (teniamo a mente che “la mappa è/non è il territorio”), riferendosi ai concetti di terra e territorio, di deterritorializzazione e riterritorializzazione elaborati dai francesi Gilles Deleuze e Félix Guattari.

Questo vivo interesse dell’artista per il fenomeno della perdita dell’identità dovuta al colonialismo deriva, anche, dalla storia del suo Paese: per secoli la Romania ha subito l’occupazione da parte di diversi imperi, tra i più duraturi ed impattanti vanno ricordati quello romano, ottomano e russo. Persino oggi la Romania è al centro di questo genere di dibattito che riguarda sia la Transilvania, precedentemente regione indipendente, sia quella che viene definita come auto-colonizzazione, ovvero la tendenza del popolo ad assomigliare sempre più ai Paesi dell’Unione Europea.

Spinto da questi fatti, l’artista cerca di decostruire lo sguardo coloniale dell’arte europea, quello che Deleuze e Guattari definirebbero con il termine territorializzazione, che in passato imponeva, in un’ottica eurocentrica, canoni di bellezza formalizzati sulla base delle proporzioni del corpo dell’uomo caucasico, escludendo tutte quelle fisionomie “esotiche” che non erano conformi agli standard. Con i suoi ritratti, Marian mette in discussione il peso di questa “tradizione” cul-

turale - senza però voler cancellare la storia dell’arte, in quanto l’annullamento della cultura non porta alla discussione bensì all’ira - ed esplora, come un rispettoso turista, il paesaggio di questi volti differenti mettendosi alla prova con i diversi tratti somatici.

La scelta dei soggetti è dettata dalle fascinazioni dell’artista, alcuni possono essere personaggi storici che lo ispirano, altri sono volti trovati casualmente in internet che lo colpiscono per proporzioni e fisionomie, a volte ritenute da lui “rinascimentali” (come la sua Primavera MMXXI). Inoltre, la luce gioca un ruolo fondamentale nella realizzazione delle opere, il modo in cui essa colpisce e scolpisce un viso diventa terreno di sperimentazione per l’accostamento delle tonalità di marker acrilici e delle scritte che ne disegnano le linee.

La grande capacità dell’artista è quella di portare questi volti al di fuori della linea temporale donando l’immortalità anche a persone anonime ed emarginate, oltre a rendere omaggio a personalità come Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (The body as such). Questo è possibile grazie alla commistione riuscita tra passato e presente, tra i testi di autori storici e l’uso di una calligrafia molto simile a quella utilizzata nella più recente Street art.

In riferimento ai testi citati nelle sue opere, Marian si dimostra essere un artista di grande cultura; ispirato da una pluralità di interessi, spazia tra letteratura, poesia, filosofia e musica, oltre che tra discipline artistiche, senza il timore di accostare in questa serie - quasi del tutto inedita - poetesse giapponesi del Settecento (Fukuda Chiko-ni per l’opera Peonies), autori dell’Otto e Novecento affermati quali Emily Dickinson (per Spectral smile e Electric spring) e Dylan Thomas (per Wasted Energy e Rage against the dying of the light), attivisti per i diritti delle popolazioni afroamericane (come Maya Angelou per God is a woman too) e cantanti (come Endre Norvik per Storm) dei nostri giorni.

Lo scritto, coprotagonista dell’opera accanto al segno pittorico al fine di delineare il viso, rinforza il messaggio che si vuole veicolare, attraverso questo è possibile evidenziare i temi chiave della ricerca dell’artista: alcuni di carattere universale come il binomio vita-morte e il rapporto uomo-natura ed altri legati a dibattiti più attuali come le discriminazioni di razza, genere, religione e orientamento sessuale e, appunto, il colonialismo.

Per far riflettere sulle condizioni delle popolazioni discriminate dalla visione occidentale, che siano afroamericane, asiatiche o sudamericane, l’artista si avvale dei pensieri di attivisti coinvolti personalmente in queste lotte, un esempio è Márcia Kambeba - citata nelle opere Silent warrior, Native dream e Native spirit - che con le sue poesie descrive come i popoli indigeni non abbiano perso la propria essenza pur vivendo in città e propone un processo di decolonizzazione.

I letterati scelti dall’artista si fanno portavoce anche di problematiche interne all’occidente come Margaret Atwood (per le opere Autumn is/not e The moment), la quale espone la sua preoccupazione per l’incessante degrado della civiltà odierna e della sua politica (l’intellettuale è tra gli autori citati da Marian anche per quanto riguarda il femminismo, insieme a Virginia Woolf), e Walt Whitman, cantore della democrazia e della libertà individuale (per l’opera Newton’s prism che per via dei suoi colori prende il nome, appunto, dall’arcobaleno scoperto da Newton mediante la luce).

Inoltre, l’artista, come detto in precedenza, si lascia suggestionare da ciò che ascolta - come nel caso di Storm e Final bow - ma anche dalla lettura di studi recenti riguardanti la carriera del mondo dell’arte contemporanea, infatti nell’opera Blue career l’artista mostra la sua preoccupazione e tristezza - la scelta del colore stesso ne identifica il sentimento per il futuro degli artisti: secondo uno studio di S. Fraiberger, R. Sinatra, M. Resch, C. Riedl e A. Barabási il destino e il

successo di questi è legato alla possibilità o meno di accedere, all’inizio della propria carriera, ad istituzioni prestigiose.

Anche più in generale questo settore viene discriminato in molti Paesi in quanto ritenuto più un passatempo che un vero lavoro e per questo non viene tutelato al pari di lavori in altri campi considerati più “utili”.

Tornando all’uso della scrittura, il lavoro di Gabriel Marian si inserisce nella storia dell’arte come conseguenza logica e lineare di tutte quelle correnti che hanno reso la parola coprotagonista nella composizione artistica, dalla Poesia visiva alle Parole in libertà del Futurismo, dal Dadaismo al Surrealismo, per passare dagli anni Sessanta con esponenti come Merz, Boetti e Kosuth fino a giungere ai più recenti generi artistici come la Street art. Se si pensa all’Occidente è immediato trovare connessioni tra arte e scrittura nel Novecento, mentre diventa più difficile pensare ad esperienze pregresse - se non qualche sporadica tradizione come le lettere miniate o le semplici iscrizioni dei dipinti -, mentre nelle culture dell’Estremo Oriente questo legame trova testimonianze consolidate nel corso dei secoli - l’artista stesso manifesta la sua fascinazione per la calligrafia di queste terre che lo porta a renderle omaggio nell’opera Peonies -.

La scrittura è in grado di caratterizzare l’identità di un popolo essendo un aspetto chiave della cultura che rappresenta, non è un caso però che le più riconoscibili e riconosciute siano quelle che hanno abbracciato il disegno come loro parte integrante, quali le incisioni rupestri, i geroglifici egizi e i pittogrammi cinesi.

Un altro aspetto fondamentale nelle opere di Marian è la linea, e di conseguenza il gesto da cui essa prende vita, per questa ragione non tutte le opere presentano paragrafi di testo. Infatti alcune di queste si concentrano sulla bellezza della linea stessa e della sua costruzione, a volte cercando di liberare la mano dalla volontà della mente, secondo la pratica zen, che crea più o meno coscientemente curve topografiche sui volti scarabocchiati dei suoi soggetti (ad esempio New territory e Smile in the dark), altre volte realizzando razionalmente linee dalle forme più geometriche che ricordano invece le vecchie mappe di navigazione (Native spirit).

Nel corso del Novecento queste due modalità sono state elaborate da diversi artisti che hanno liberato la capacità espressiva della linea dal controllo della mente, come Pollock e Twombly, o ne hanno teorizzato un uso consapevole, quali Kandinskij, Klee e Picasso.

Prendendo spunto anche dai concetti di astrazione e di disegno come “arte di portare a spasso una linea” teorizzati da Klee, Marian cerca di sciogliere il nodo della rappresentazione figurativa, soprattutto in relazione al ritratto, che, a differenza dei primi lavori sul tema, in queste nuove opere è affrontato con uno stile più libero e meno programmatico, a volte più espressionista ed altre più calligrafico.

Un altro artista a cui si ispira Marian è Magritte per il modo in cui questo gioca con le parole e le immagini sia quando le une integrano e completano il messaggio delle altre sia quando le due forme servono a rafforzarsi a vicenda senza creare ulteriori significati; il titolo stesso della mostra è un omaggio a La Trahison des images del pittore francese dove la pipa raffigurata è e non è l’oggetto in questione.

La coppia vincente, formata da questi ultimi due artisti, permette a Marian di sviluppare la sua ricerca in diverse direzioni, le quali si presentano come una serie concatenata di evoluzioni. Nel primo caso la scrittura è ben distinta dall’immagine e ha la funzione di commentare, arricchire o contraddire la figurazione; nel secondo caso diventa elemento costitutivo della rappresentazione visiva rimanendo leggibile parzialmente o mantenendo la sua struttura grafica, in

questo modo il messaggio è di più difficile lettura e la stessa difficoltà si fa essa stessa informazione; nel terzo ed ultimo caso lo scritto è suggerito dalla linea che ne mima le caratteristiche formali sfociando in quella che possiamo ricondurre alla scrittura asemica.

In conclusione, l’artista-esploratore ci chiede di raggiungerlo in queste terre per scoprirne le bellezze e ci invita a mappare nuovi territori, creare nuove strade che ci uniscano. Gabriel Marian chiede il nostro contributo, il contributo di tutti, per scrivere parole che plasmino il volto di una società libera da discriminazioni di ogni genere.

Maps to the soul 1. Il rapporto, sia dell’artista che dell’osservatore, con la superficie del dipinto In qualità di artista, ritengo sia importante parlare del modo in cui ho realizzato le opere di questa serie e del modo in cui lavoro da diversi anni (da quando esploro questa tecnica relativamente nuova dei pennarelli acrilici). Così come gli impressionisti hanno tratto vantaggio dalle evoluzioni tecnologiche e industriali della loro epoca (l’invenzione dei tubetti di colore, dei kit di pittura e dei cavalletti portatili, ecc.), cosa che ha permesso loro di dipingere all’aperto, la recente comparsa sul mercato dei marker acrilici mi ha permesso di sviluppare un approccio alla linea (e alla composizione) che era molto più difficile da realizzare con le tecniche e i materiali classici quali il pennello, il cavalletto, ecc. Queste innovazioni hanno cambiato anche il modo in cui mi approccio, come artista, alla superficie pittorica: un rapporto non solo concreto, fisico, ma anche simbolico, che non può essere trascurato. A questo proposito, le parole di Jackson Pollock ci aiutano a comprendere meglio la storia dei diversi approcci artistici attuali. Abbiamo da una parte i gesti del pittore da cavalletto, che indicano l’importanza della distanza tra l’artista e l’opera, insieme ad una sorta di coreografia minimale, composta da avvicinamenti e allontanamenti ritmici attraverso i quali l’artista controlla la superficie posta davanti a lui e l’opera in sé, un controllo dell’obiettività dell’ego sulla materia che egli anima e a cui dà forma: una danza secca, ben controllata, con gesti limitati e passi sempre simili.

Al contrario, il rapporto con la tela di un espressionista astratto come Pollock porta ad immergersi nella superficie pittorica. Un nuovo tipo di danza che non viene più eseguito in relazione al supporto come un oggetto distaccato, bensì all’interno (sulla superficie) della tela, come un’integrazione dell’artista nella composizione. Quindi non possiamo più decidere altrettanto precisamente se e in che misura l’ego del pittore controlla la coreografia e i gesti, possiamo però presupporre che la superficie di lavoro stessa (le dimensioni e la sua disposizione) induca certi movimenti e “passi di danza”, come possiamo osservare nelle testimonianze di Jackson Pollock: On the floor I am more at ease. the four sides and literally be in the painting. […]

Art is coming face to face with yourself. […]

You can’t learn techniques and then try to become a painter. Techniques are a result.1 L’artista non si posiziona più “davanti” all’oggetto da rappresentare o al lavoro che risulterà da quest’osservazione distaccata, distante, più o meno oggettiva, bensì si posiziona dal principio “nel” dipinto, in un’opera che non rinvia più ad/ non “rappresenta” un oggetto esterno e che dirige i gesti dell’artista almeno nella stessa misura in cui egli stesso cerca di dirigerli. Pollock era a conoscenza sia della tradizione orientale della pittura sulle superfici orizzontali sia di quella (più vicina geograficamente) delle pratiche artistiche degli amerindi, che ha potuto osservare durante gli anni Quaranta in occasione di una dimostrazione presso il Museum of Modern Art. Nel mio caso, il funzionamento specifico dei marker acrilici (ossia il colore liquido che fuoriesce dalla punta porosa) impone dal principio il lavoro su una superficie orizzontale, per assicurare un flusso costante e forte del colore e l’ottenimento di linee ininterrotte con una lunghezza sempre più ampia (una lunghezza dettata quindi non dalla limitazione dello strumento/materiale, bensì dall’energia del gesto della mano dell’artista). Inoltre, il più delle volte, è necessario che la superficie sia sufficientemente rigida affinché resista alla pressione della punta del marker, motivo per cui le tele tese sul telaio tradizionale sono spesso inadeguate o necessitano di un consolidamento temporaneo o definitivo attraverso diversi mezzi. Pertanto, le differenze diventano evidenti sia in relazione alla pittura da cavalletto sia alle tecniche di dripping utilizzate dagli espressionisti astratti americani.

Per quanto riguarda la relazione dell’osservatore con le opere di questa serie, la posizione rispetto a queste porta ad effetti ottici diversi. Da lontano queste sono state create per dare l’illusione di rappresentazioni figurative, realiste. Man mano che si osservano più da vicino, la tecnica con la quale sono state realizzate fa emergere la loro costruzione, che somiglia sempre di più a una composizione astratta, a un intreccio di linee e macchie colorate, di lettere e figure asemiche. Pertanto, consiglio l’alternanza di queste posizioni per apprezzare pienamente i diversi livelli di percezione delle opere.

2. Testo e immagine La presenza dei testi nelle mie opere si è evoluta durante diversi anni di preoccupazioni per questa coabitazione, periodo in cui ho scoperto e ho familiarizzato anche con il lavoro di diversi artisti che si sono interessati a simili approcci. Ma, prima di offrirvi alcuni suggerimenti sulla relazione tra testo e immagine, voglio presentare la mia visione sulla relazione tra osservatore e testo nell’immagine.

Questa costruzione complessa dei sensi e dei messaggi all’interno di un’immagine artistica, che include anche segni linguistici, rientra a sua volta nel rapporto con la modalità di presentazione all’interno di un’esposizione o di un progetto di altra natura (stampata, ad esempio), nella misura in cui il progetto estetico che propongo implica anche un paratesto quasi ugualmente complesso. Questo tipo di presentazione trasforma la semplice esposizione in un’esperienza che si avvicina a un happening immersivo, in quanto il movimento dell’osservatore davanti alle opere è rallentato, temporaneamente bloccato, fermato dalla presenza di testi di dimensioni considerevoli.

Dunque, la tela è spesso accompagnata da didascalie di dimensioni relativamente grandi, che includono non solo il titolo e le informazioni sul dipinto, ma anche la totalità o i frammenti di testo utilizzato come elemento estetico/compositivo nell’immagine esposta. Questa modalità espositiva induce dal principio nell’osservatore l’idea che i segni linguistici presenti nell’immagine hanno un significato preciso e danno, all’inizio, l’illusione di una comunicazione diretta e relativamente semplice. Eppure, questo è esattamente il punto in cui la percezione del rispettivo oggetto artistico si complica grazie a diversi fattori: le relazioni molto specifiche (e variabili) tra immagine e testo, la denotazione e la connotazione del messaggio presupposto, il modo di integrazione nell’immagine e il suo dialogo con la modalità convenzionale di presentazione del testo letterario.

L’osservatore si ritroverà inizialmente in una situazione d’incertezza sul ruolo dei rispettivi testi nell’immagine: spiegazione? Denotazione? Commento? Poi, in un secondo momento, potrebbe iniziare a farsi domande simili sulla condizione dell’immagine. Questi dubbi diventano tanto più creativi se gli apparenti “messaggi” veicolati dai segni iconici e linguistici sono divergenti o non offrono indizi facilmente leggibili sui rapporti tra di loro, obbligando in tal modo il pubblico a mobilizzare risorse aggiuntive di creatività per trovare o inventare rapporti significativi accettabili. Quale potrebbe essere, ad esempio, il rapporto tra un ritratto sereno pervaso da una malinconia sottile (che per aggiunta sembra un’allusione alla pittura rinascimentale) e un testo poetico intenso e agitato come sono i versi della pittrice nativa brasiliana Márcia Kambeba? O la poesia scomoda di Margaret Atwood? Per di più, davanti ad una tale sfida (che potrebbe essere definita anche “puzzle”, nel senso di una sfida ludica) la capacità d’interpretazione del pubblico (nel caso in cui questo non rinunci e abbandoni l’osservazione delle opere) è sottoposta a uno sforzo considerevole che stimola un certo tipo di poiesi/creazione culturale. Cercando di identificare i significati che possano tener conto di entrambi i tipi di segni e messaggi percepiti, l’osservatore può non rendersi conto del fatto che, invece di “decriptare” un messaggio misterioso, effettua qualcosa di molto più importante: partecipa alla creazione dell’opera d’arte come processo che implica minimo due esseri umani.

3. Composizione Le opere di questa serie presentano due tendenze relativamente divergenti, che si manifestano in momenti diversi nel mio rapporto con l’immagine. Da una parte, sento a volte la necessità di una proliferazione visiva, della crescita della complessità delle composizioni in una direzione che confermi il mio interesse e la mia passione duratura per l’estetica

barocca e rococò. Le composizioni diventano, quindi, lo spazio per sovrapposizioni complesse (layering) associate a giustapposizioni da cui risultano effetti di azzardo controllato, o più precisamente transizioni inaspettate, dalle accumulazioni quantitative ai salti qualitativi/visivi, gli effetti ottici risultati da queste proliferazioni offrono più di una semplice somma di linee e forme: cromaticamente, ma anche formalmente, risultano illusioni nuove, che l’occhio percepisce diversamente a seconda della posizione rispetto all’opera. È una forma di puntinismo portata oltre, una tecnica in cui i punti si trasformano in linee incrociate o avvicinate.

In altri momenti, sento la necessità di una riduzione del livello degli stimoli, caso in cui le composizioni si semplificano, la palette di colori si riduce, la contemplazione viene effettuata su altre coordinate, che si avvicinano a quello che gli occidentali intendono per zen o “minimalismo”. Solamente che è un minimalismo che traduce una meditazione approfondita, non solo una mancanza di ispirazione o una relazione angosciata con la tela bianca.

Pertanto, l’insieme di queste opere è costituito da una palette di atteggiamenti estetici e di manifestazioni affettive che ricoprono un intero spettro di valori: da quelli più intensi a quelli più sottili. Un’esplorazione delle diverse regioni dell’anima dell’artista, realizzata attraverso una serie di ritratti con fisionomie considerate il più delle volte “esotiche”, ma che finiscono per essere autoritratti dell’autore, così come qualsiasi altra opera artistica.

BIOGRAPHY Gabriel Marian

Gabriel Marian is a visual artist, curator and one of the founders of the Nano Gallery at the Center of Interest, Cluj. He graduated in 2011 with a Master’s degree in painting from UAD, and in 2022 with a PhD in visual arts from the same university. He has exhibited in Berlin (2021, with other artists from Cluj), Strasbourg (2019 - solo show), Turin and Paris (2015/2013- group exhibitions) and in other galleries in Romania. His work appears, among other artists, in the Benetton collection of contemporary art: ‘Imago Mundi: Romanian artists’ (2014) and in the album published the same year in Treviso.

He has participated in a series of graphic projects in collaboration with the German Centre Cluj and Comics Club Cluj. He is also the author of a series of articles on criticism and art history published in Dilema Veche and Echinox (2001-2005). His artworks are in private collections in France and the United States.

In terms of his personal artistic approach, he is concerned with the frontier between abstraction and figuration, which he explores from an ironic perspective on art history.

In his recent works, he uses complex superimpositions of lines, signs and shapes to recreate vaguely familiar images and structures, often using fragments of texts from universal, classical or contemporary literature. His current artistic projects focus on the representation of the human physiognomy in a post-colonial perspective, both as a deconstruction of the territorialization (Deleuze) imposed by European art history and as a rediscovery of the features of the portrait as a landscape traversed by the seemingly random trajectories of graphic lines and signs - recomposing the figurative image.

Other projects have tackled the limits of representation such as myopia, microscopic perception or calligraphy and graffiti.
