15 Years of Giving With Aloha & Appreciation!

I

n 2002, a small group of impassioned Hualālai Homeowners set out to establish a first-of-its-kind, luxury residential resort foundation to benefit employees and their families. Today, the non-profit Hualālai ‘Ohana Foundation remains committed to its original philosophy, vision and values, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.

by the Resort’s generous insurance plans and somewhat limited, often expensive-beyond-reach, educational opportunities, Price, a veteran of the hospitality industry, says. “The awards are amazing and programs and benefits continue to grow each year. I’ve never experienced anything like this, I’m privileged to be a part of it,” she says. Uncovered medical expenses include airfare, accommodations and living costs for those individuals who require treatment at major medical facilities on O‘ahu and/or the mainland, Price says.

An annual donation campaign and once a year fundraiser, golf tournament, silent auction and awards dinner, account for most of those dollars, although Junior Members have contributed through their own special events and programs over the years. Starting with a golf cart wash in 2003, their efforts have grown to include everything from recycling campaigns and customized Hualālai board game sales to recreational events such as a Paint Run.

Educational support ranges from preschool learning tools such as Leapfrog products and books; Honor Roll Awards for middle and high school students; and higher education scholarships for employees and/or their children to attend trade schools, community colleges and universities on-island and on the mainland.

“Hualālai was established with the goal of creating an exclusive family resort with a genuine sense of community. As with the majority of their neighbors, this founding group of Members clearly recognized that it’s the employees who have and continue to make that goal a success,” Foundation Executive Director, Cara Price, says.

Managed and administrated by Homeowners who serve as volunteer Officers and Board Members, the Foundation provides 100% of the funds donated and raised annually to support these two objectives, according to Price.

The Hualālai ‘Ohana Foundation supports two primary challenges employees face living on Hawai‘i Island: extra medical expenses not covered

“Me ke aloha, kökua aku kökua mai: Pela io la ka nohona ‘ohana.”

With love, help others be helped: Such is a family relationship.

“Donating more than just valuable time and expertise to the cause, Foundation Board Members and Officers write a check to cover all annual overhead costs, including the salaries of three paid staff,” Board Member Bill McDowell says. McDowell, a three-year Board veteran, also serves on its Medical Committee, sharing his knowledge as the owner of a health care facility on the mainland and his personal experience as a caregiver to his wife of 10 years who lost her battle to cancer. He and his partner Julie Wrigley joined the Resort community as Homeowners six years ago and McDowell says, “We’ve never been involved in a community that’s this interesting and so much fun – we love it for the people here, the staff is just spectacular. For us, it’s always been important to give back to the community we live in – to return a little bit of what the employees give us, love and care,” he says. "The commitment is heartfelt and truly a win-win for both recipients and donors who, through the Foundation as a vehicle for giving, have an opportunity to contribute to the well-being and aloha spirit of our unique community," current President, Donna Chipps, says.

Foundation Values & Goals Philosophy: Consistent with preserving the tradition of respect for the land and of the Hawai‘ian culture, we wish to acknowledge and support the exceptional individuals of the community who work to make Hualālai a paradise to the eye and to the heart. Purpose: In response to the high costs of education and medical care for the people of Hawai‘i , the purpose of the Foundation is to provide educational and medical care opportunities to families employed or self-employed in the Hualālai community. Vision Statement: We are committed to achieving 100% participation by our homeowners to invest in our community by providing encouragement and financial assistance to the Hualālai employee families and, through them, the people of Hawai‘i Island.

A Word of Thanks Monica Balanay Marketing 17-year Resort employee

Meet the President Vibrant and energetic with a smile that lights up whatever space she’s in, Donna Chipps is the current President of the Hualālai ‘Ohana Foundation. A dedicated supporter from the time she joined the Hualālai Resort community in 2003, Chipps is in her third term as President and prior to that served seven years on the Board of Directors. “From day one, I was drawn to participating in Foundation events and donating annually. I was so happy to be here, and I wanted to contribute back to this wonderful community. I’m a big believer in paying it forward to employees who are so welcoming and gracious, who take such great care of all of us,” Chipps says. She is quick to acknowledge the Foundations founders, “They came up with a concise mission statement, little of that has changed.” Fortunately, what has changed over the years is the growth of educational programs and medical benefits available to employees and their families. Chipps says she hopes to have every Member contribute, whether it’s writing a check or donating time and expertise. “The joy of contributing to this Foundation in this relatively small, close-knit community is having the chance to experience the relief and joy in the recipients' smile, receive a hug and perhaps a handmade lei of flowers grown in their garden.”

“Our daughters Sophia, 20, and Noelani, 18, have both been recipients of the ‘Ohana Foundation’s educational awards on and off over the past 10 years. These include summer school programs during their elementary and high school days at Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy in Waimea and at the Donkey Mill Art Center in Holualoa. Both of these programs would have been beyond our resources without the Foundation’s assistance. Today Sophia is attending Cal Poly University in Pomona, CA, thanks to a higher education scholarship from the Foundation, while Noelani is attending community college here on Hawai‘i Island.”

"We are so grateful for the opportunities the Foundation has made possible." Loida Enriques Retail, Golf Pro Shop 21-year Resort employee “My family and I are so blessed and grateful to be part of the Hualālai community with its thoughtful and generous Homeowners – all three of us have received awards from the Hualālai ‘Ohana Foundation over more than 20 years. In fact, my son Dayson (now a 3-year veteran officer with the Hawai‘i Island Police Department) was the very first education award recipient when the Foundation was formed in 2002. Since then my husband, Steve, and I have received medical and dental awards, including travel expenses incurred for Steve’s surgery in Honolulu. It’s such a comfort to know there is a resource for assistance when these unforeseen expenses happen. We give thanks to the Foundation every day.” Daneen Rutledge Food & Beverage, Banquets 9-year Resort employee “I am forever appreciative of the ‘Ohana Foundation for helping to return my smile – an absolute prerequisite for a front-of-house position in a luxury resort such as Hualālai. While the Resort’s outstanding insurance coverage takes care of most procedures with reasonable co-pays, the dental work I required totaled $9,000! When I discovered this, a colleague in banquets suggested I contact the Foundation for assistance. After filling out a simple application, two weeks later I received a grant covering nearly half of that expense. I cannot say enough about how professional, friendly and efficient the Foundation staff is in processing applications and eliminating the financial stress that accompanies emergency medical or dental care. I’m a huge advocate and share all of the good the Foundation does with my fellow employees so when they need help, they know where to turn.”

HOMEGROWN

Oysters!

Director of Natural Resources David Chai and Melissa Van Der Merwe, Natural Resources Pr0grams and Marine Specialist.

F

ollowing a 12-year journey, Hualālai Resort’s Director of Natural Resources, David Chai, debuted one of his team’s most delicious projects – organically grown oysters cultivated and harvested on-property. This latest nod to sustainability is a reflection of the Resort’s commitment not only to culinary excellence, but to the preservation and enhancement of the natural resources found in this historic region known as Ka‘ūpūlehu. Chai, a marine biologist, led the charge in making the cultivation of oysters on-site a reality. It began, with research, and the support of the Resort Owners.

“I’ve been with Hualālai since 1990, the first six years as a consulting marine biologist and the past 21 as a full-time employee. My initial role consisted of restoration of the natural anchialine ponds found throughout the property and development of a marine management plan, a condition required by the County prior to approval of resort development. From the beginning and through a change in Resort Ownership in 2006, support for our natural resource projects, and stewardship of the land and ocean here has never wavered,” Chai says. Several years were spent testing 8

numerous varieties of oysters to determine the species best suited for the pristine, slightly warm waters of Pūnāwai Lake which is centrally located on the resort. This award-winning, man-made lake also serves as a unique and attractive water feature on the fifth hole of the Members’ only Ke‘olu Golf Course. Nicknamed the “Living Machine”, the three-million-gallon, 2.3 acre lake earned the name for its use of floating islands of plants to filter the water and to remove pollution and excess nutrients. Chai, who was instrumental in the overall design of the energy-efficient filtering system says, "We

basically built a mini-ecosystem to clean the fully self-contained lake.”

HUALĀLAI

Shortly after its construction, Hualālai Resort was rewarded for Chai’s efforts when the Environmental Protection Agency named it a recipient of its annual awards for environmental responsibility. The source of water for Pūnāwai Lake comes from a subterranean seawater aquifer which is tapped from wells deep within the lava. The lake, Chai says, is completely surrounded by a food-grade quality liner made from material that prevents contaminants from entering the lake and which doesn’t leach any of its own composite materials into the water.

WAS HONORED FOR

“Initially, inspection and testing of ponds and lakes on Hawai‘i Island was extremely expensive and actually cost prohibitive for our Health Department,” Chai says. “Finally, just in the past few years, more efficient and less costly methods have been developed and now we welcome health inspectors here once a month for rigorous testing that proves our lake water is absolutely clean and pure, and our oysters are healthy.” Following years of oyster research, Chai finally found the perfect mollusk for Pūnāwai Lake water conditions in late 2015– an East Coast oyster from Chesapeake Bay. “This particular species doesn’t mind low salinity and higher water temperatures, and the meat quality

ITS CONSERVATION EFFORTS, SPECIFICALLY FOR DEVELOPING THE LIVING MACHINE. is extremely high – and delicious,” Chai says. The lake water is comprised of both brackish water and ocean seawater, he adds, resulting in our ability to adjust the salinity or brininess of the oyster. Soon after that discovery, Chai and his team of five marine specialists provided some 6,000 oysters to three of six resort restaurants. Since then tens of thousands of these home-grown oysters have been consumed at the Resort. In 2017, with the addition of another species found to be just as ideally suited to the lake’s conditions (the Pacific Oyster aka Kumamoto) Chai’s team anticipates fulfilling demand for oysters to most resort dining venues – ‘ULU Ocean Grill + Sushi, Beach Tree, Hualālai Grille and, for the first time, the Residents’ Beach House. “We currently have 40,000 juvenile Pacific Oysters at Pūnāwai Lake which should be ready for

harvesting this summer,” he says. “The demand from our restaurants for fresh, resort-grown organic oysters is extremely high, so at this point they are all reserved exclusively for our chefs,” Chai says. That may change soon, however, as Chai is working with food and beverage executives now to develop an easy and efficient program to make the oysters available to Members for at-home consumption. Meanwhile, late in 2017, Chai teamed with Eric Garrett, longtime Sous Chef at the Residents’ Beach House to create a handful of dishes featuring the succulent crustaceans for the winter menu. The duo wasn’t ready to disclose exactly what those tasty treats will be as of press time but they will change seasonally; check them out when you’re back home in paradise! Currently, ‘ULU Ocean Grill + Sushi features Hualālai Oysters on the Half Shell with Hot Damskey and Yuzu Ponzu Sauce; a fried Hualālai Oyster Po’Boy with Arugula, WOW Tomatoes and Traditional Louisiana Remoulade is served at Beach Tree; and Hualālai Grille offers Hualālai Oysters on the Half Shell with both a Spicy Maui Onion and Ogo mignonette, and a traditional house-made Cocktail Sauce.

development – I jumped at the opportunity to be part of it all. Residential neighborhoods were growing and major new amenities were being designed and built, among them the Canoe Club and the Members’ only Ke‘olu Golf Course and Clubhouse. Seventeen years into it, thanks to the resort owners’ commitment to innovation, enhancement and controlled growth, the thrill never lets up” Lee says. “I have always had a strong appreciation and passion for aesthetics. For the balanced way a tree is shaped, for pristine weed-free gardens and for landscape that reflects the true nature of the place,” Lee says. A true nurturer at heart, she’s quick to admit, however, that that passion is matched by her love for growing organic foods much to the delight of resort chefs and homeowners. “When I first arrived, a small ‘Herb Garden’ existed on the Four Seasons Resort Hualālai hotel grounds. In reality, it was more of a cultural exhibit containing samples of various ‘canoe plants’ transported to Hawai‘i by ancient voyagers,” Lee says. “In 2003, slowly at the request and support of our restaurant chefs, we began planting actual herbs, vegetables and fruits in the garden which is easily accessible to the hotel’s restaurant kitchens. This all happened before the ‘farm to table’ concept became all the rage.”

etite powerhouse Erin Lee, Hualālai Resort’s longtime Director of Landscape, is fueled by passion and driven by an intense pursuit of excellence.

Now mature and in full production seasonally, the hotel Herb Garden is filled with everything from stellar citrus (Meyer lemons, ruby red grapefruit and Tahitian limes) to mangoes and starfruit, sage, basil and lemongrass to eggplant, ulu and sweet potatoes.

At the helm of landscape planning and aesthetics since 2000, Lee is bolstered by her team of 72 professionals who install and provide care for the hotel and resort grounds, numerous single family homes, Hualālai Club facilities, community association common areas and residential interior plants.

“With the success of this garden and growing demand for ‘homegrown’ produce, we cultivated a similar garden at the Members’ only Ke‘olu Clubhouse in 2015. Resort Chefs and homeowners are welcome to forage daily to supplement their culinary supplies,” Lee says. “It’s just another of the many benefits of Membership!”

“It’s a big job and it would be impossible to achieve and maintain the standard of quality we have established over the years without this incredible team,” Lee says. According to the O‘ahu native, “The early 2000’s was an incredibly exciting and busy time in the resort’s 10

Kūlanakauhale 11 New Homes

Local contractor Russ Trull and interior designer Gina Willman, both Hawai‘i Island residents, were chosen by Hualālai Resort Resident Ron Johnson to create the home plans for this new neighborhood. Two color palettes and two finishes are available to choose from as well, according to Willman. In addition, the talented Craig Chambers is tasked with the landscape planning. With a total of 5 of the 11 homes now sold, Hualālai Director of Residential Sales Rob Kildow, says, “We couldn’t be happier with the market reaction to these homes. Selling 5 homes prior to their completion demonstrates a strong market demand for properties in this price range. These are outstanding sales in a new community that looks better and better every day as construction and landscaping efforts advance. Of the remaining 6 homes, 4 are under construction and will offer excellent opportunities for our buyers wanting new construction.” This amazing neighborhood is located a short cart ride away from our Members’ only facilities – the Ke‘olu Clubhouse and Golf Course and the ocean-side Hualālai Canoe Club. Prices for the remaining homes range from $4,000,000 to $4,900,000. Contact Hualālai Realty at 808-325-8500 if you are interested in knowing more about this exciting neighborhood.

Henderson Design Group Clean Lines and A Bit of Playfulness

E

ric Henderson's approach to design blends the personal, the beautiful and the practical of the Hawaiian home. The Hawai‘ibased interior designer delivers an enduring aesthetic that exudes a sense of easy sophistication. "Clean lines with touches of playfulness is part of my signature, I want my clients' homes to be inviting, straightforward and easy, and I want my clients to smile. Comfort is also always incorporated into the design, where every movement is anticipated." The designer is personally attuned and

appreciative of the changing colors and light found at Hualālai throughout the day, and designs to build on the natural light and colors of Hawai‘i. Among them ocean blues, bright, and at times exotic, patterns and emerald greens. Henderson adds these bold splashes thoughtfully throughout in his fabric, accessory and decorative selections. These thoughtful nuances have distinguished Henderson Design Group and propelled the design firm into notable expansion once again, this time with the recent opening of the Honolulu Design Studio. This location marks its third studio space, joining San Francisco and Hawai‘i Island (The Shops at Mauna Lani) allowing Henderson to serve clients and hold presentations and meetings in all locations, a huge appeal to his clients. 25

"Most of our clients do not live full time at Hualālai so being able to meet with them throughout the project in Hawai‘i or the Mainland is very helpful and cost and time effective in moving projects along. The other locations also keep us linked to the cutting edge and transformative design happenings in luxury living in Hawai‘i as well as connected to one of the top design centers in the country. Keeping up to date on the design world provides the best innovations and selections for our clients." Drawing inspiration from a love of nature and color, Henderson's work aims to be felt as much as it is seen. "Design expands, uplifts and changes people's hearts, it is an opportunity to align with what is authentic for each of us, that which makes us smile," he says. www.henderson.house

Tactile Textures Loom Big for Designer Gina Willman

N

ative New Zealander Gina Willman, ASID, is a selfproclaimed city girl who grew up and studied in Auckland. Today, however, and for the past 14 years, she finds herself operating Willman Interiors in a studio space situated in sleepy, charming Waimea Town on Hawai‘i Island. Her contemporary interiors are grounded in clean lines and complemented by strong, organic materials (basalt, river rocks, indigenous woods) and highlytextured fabrics.

At Hualālai Resort, Willman most often chooses a neutral palette for furnishings accented by artwork, hand-woven rugs of her own custom design, and various home accessories in colors flavored by New Zealand and its native Maori culture, as well as that of her 25 years in Hawai‘i. Asian-inspired focal points also find their way into many of her interiors, a nod, she says to the multi-racial make-up of our Pacific Rim location. “Most of my clients at Hualālai, she says, have a strong desire for

uncluttered, tranquil, Zen-like living spaces, no surprise really! These individuals live a frenzied, fast-lane life and they’ve come to Hawai‘i to relax and re-energize. Choosing calm, soothing colors (neutrals, greens and blues) helps create that ambiance,” she says. Critical to her work, Willman says, is forming strong relationships with each client to create and deliver the living environment that suits their style and lifestyle best. www.willmaninteriors.com

Kids on the Course

Foot Golf: Juniors Just Wanna Have Fun! Director of Golf Operations Brendan Moynahan and his team of golf professionals (Jake Belveal, Matt Hasegawa, Scott Bridges and Dakota Smith) are constantly coming up with engaging and fun activities to bring more and more Junior Members into the game. Of course, private lessons and

clinics have always been a big part of the mix with pitching, chipping and bunker play being among the most popular specialty clinics, according to Moynahan. Seasonal special events such as Night Glow Golf (5 holes) and Night Glow Putting put the emphasis more on family fun than

learning. Foot Golf, introduced in 2016, is the latest in junior fun on the course. It’s a hybrid of soccer and golf with pop-up soccer goals appearing on the 9 holes that are played late in the day. Upcoming in 2017, Moynahan says, is Night Glow Bocce Ball on the Hualālai Golf Course.

Who Let the Dogs Out? with his standard poodle Rocco, is a frequent attendee.

With more and more furry “Members” on Resort property these days, we needed to find a place for them to run free with their human “parents”, Brendan Moynahan says.

“The exercise and socialization is great for the dogs and we always look forward to seeing Bella, Mr. Bean and Wrigs along with additional Members’ dogs. We can always count on Bella’s owner, John Ryan, to provide canine cocktails and pupus for all,” Skeen says.

“Looking for a safe environment for the pooches and their owners which has zero impact on Members’ homes or environs, we designated the fairways on Hole 2 of the Hualālai Course and Hole 14 of the Ke‘olu Course as late afternoon dog playgrounds,” he says.

All this fun does come with a few rules. Owners must accompany and be in control of their dogs at all times, and are required to clean up after their pets. At all other times, dogs must be on-leash while in public areas of the Resort property.

Every day from 5pm to 6pm is “Canine Yappy Hour” on these specific fairways, according to Member John Skeen who, along

"Anything is possible"

I

Just"train!

n late 2015, Four Seasons Resort Hualālai formed a partnership with legendary six-time IRONMAN World Champion Dave Scott (aka “The Man” for his super hero powers on the course) to offer a unique, fiveday Triathlon Experience training camp for Homeowners and hotel guests.

Introduced with great success in early 2016, the full-immersion training camps are offered four times a year. In 2017, the final session is set for August 28 through September 1. Please see details on next page for reserving your space. In the meantime, the 2018 schedule will be released late this year, so stay tuned!

"Creating a partnership with Dave Scott was a natural fit. Beyond his performance as an athlete, he is a best-in-class coach and nutritionist. It is our mission to consistently deliver world class experiences for our guests and Members," Patrick Pollak, Hotel Manager, says.

“It’s a one-of-a-kind luxury resort experience in Hawai‘i and, as far as I know, the entire country,” Scott says.

"And being situated on the IRONMAN World Championship bike course, the enthusiasm among our Members and guests for the sport has grown over the years. It has become an annual tradition to watch the race from the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway at the entrance of our Resort," Pollak, says.

Designed with exclusivity in mind, the training camps are offered for adults only and are limited to a maximum of 10 guests, ensuring extensive one-on-one time with Scott. Participants may choose to attend the full five days of coaching that focus on all disciplines needed for peak triathlon performance (swim, bike, run, strength, flexibility and nutrition) or pick and choose among the daily offerings. The highly-personalized training also includes pre-camp

phone consultation and postcamp training prescription, video analysis, group meals, and a welcome gift consisting of triathlon apparel, shoes, gear and some additional exclusive offers. Undoubtedly the most impressive feature, Scott leads every session, every day, 100% of the time, offering instruction, evaluating abilities, identifying issues that might be holding a participant back from achieving their goals and diagnosing solutions that will lead to improvement.

"We are most interested in the well-being and health of each individual and are open to customizing the experience to each individual,” Scott says. There really are no rules, he says, offering up these examples: · Intent on learning more about proper nutrition? Choose to attend only those specific seminars and meals. · Looking to perfect your swim strokes? Join us for just those training sessions and evaluations. · Preparing for your first or tenth triathlon event? Then you’ll definitely want full-immersion!

continued from page 37 The goal, he says, is not to smash anyone up with super intense training sessions, but rather it’s to make participants more efficient and economical with their workouts. “A lot of folks have a limited amount of time to train, so optimizing what they do on their workout days is critical. I don’t teach just how to train for triathlons,” Scott says. “I share ideas on how to optimize health and fitness, which makes this training valuable for everyone, not only triathletes and aspiring triathletes." As one participant says, “Scott’s ‘learn by doing’ and highly targeted approach to training benefits athletes of all abilities.” For more details, including pricing and reservations, contact Four Seasons Resort Hualālai at (808) 325-8000 or visit the website at fourseasons.com/hualalai.

Meet "The Man" up in Davis, California, Scott excelled at football, basketball, swimming and water polo. He studied exercise physiology at the University of California, Davis, which provided expertise key to successful performance in extreme endurance competitions.

Six-time IRONMAN World Champion, Dave Scott, admits to being “born a jock” but insists he believes he’s an even better teacher. Let’s just agree he is both a tremendous athlete and, most likely, the most outstanding trainer on the planet! Growing

So, by the time the IRONMAN was created on O‘ahu by U.S. Navy Commander John Collins in 1978, Scott was not only intrigued by the concept, but encouraged by Collins to “do this thing”. In 1980, he did just that, winning his first event on his first attempt. It was the same year the Triathlon moved to Hawai‘i Island where it continues to take place each October. This initial win was 38

followed by 5 more in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1987. In 1993, Scott became the first inductee into the IRONMAN Hall of Fame. To celebrate, he came out of retirement at the age of 40, following a five-year absence and raced again. In one of his proudest moments, he beat an impressive field of professional athletes, many in their twenties, placing second overall. Scott competed in his last IRONMAN World Championship in 2001 at age 47, taking fifth place before retiring. Since then he has authored books, served as a motivational speaker and commentator, while creating unique training programs.

Spreading the Joy of Art

T

iffany DeEtte Shafto, producer of the applauded coffee-table book “Aloha Expressionism by Contemporary Hawai‘i Artists”, and the awardwinning coffee-table book “Contemporary Hawai‘i Woodworkers; the Wood, the Art, the Aloha”, is passionate about raising awareness of Hawai‘i’s exceptional art. Her dream is to bring its notoriety to the level its chefs, Kona coffee, music and dance have achieved worldwide in recent years. “The high concentration of incredibly talented artists throughout Hawai‘i is amazing. They continually inspire me to find new ways to share it,” she says.

The Shops at Mauna Lani.

Filled with energy and charm, the long-time Hawai‘i Island resident represents local master artists at her contemporary art gallery in historic Hāwi town, online and through special events. You can find her pop-up exhibits here at the Four Seasons Resort Hualālai throughout the year and at her quarterly shows at Henderson Design Group’s showroom at

Motivated to change the pervading thought that if art is beautiful, it’s not valuable, DeEtte Shafto says, “Surrounding ourselves with beautiful things goes beyond luxury to necessity. Art turns our homes and offices into spaces that make us feel good. That’s a powerful thing. It’s a magical moment when you discover a work of art that speaks to your heart.” The uber-talented art curator says, “Hawai‘i has a special way of connecting people, and I love working with artists and collectors to spread the joy that art brings.”
