Functional Fitness

A

Much More than a Buzzword

fun and practical workout known as “functional fitness training” is reflected in the re-design of Hualālai Resort’s award winning Sports Club, which underwent major renovations and enhancements late last year.

conventional weight training isolates muscle groups, it doesn’t teach muscle groups to work together and integration is key to functional fitness.

“Functional fitness is all about training your body to handle real-life situations.”

According to Cecilia Hercik, Director of Hualālai Sports Club and Hualālai Spa who sites the latest research in fitness and biomedical science, functional fitness training is comprised of exercises that involve training the body for activities performed in daily life more easily and without injury. The exercises are low impact and targeted at core muscles of the abdomen and lower back, creating greater muscle memory, flexibility and coordination, while improving balance and posture, and helping with joint pain.

To provide this state-of-the-art fitness experience, Sports Club pavilion floors were replaced with natural wood-topped rubber flooring and every piece of fitness equipment is new, Hercik says. During the three week renovation one of the nation’s most esteemed functional fitness “gurus”, Pete McCall, was flown in for a few days to provide three personal trainers and six class instructors with

customized, one-on-one training on the concept, as A 25-year veteran of the wellness industry, Cecilia Hercik, left, is Director of the Hualālai Sports Club and Hualālai Spa. Joining the resort in October 2017, she was tapped just in time to oversee the Sports Club’s major renovation project. Hercik most recently operated her C-SPA consulting company on Maui following many years managing luxury spas on that island and on Oahu, among them: The Spa Grande at the Grand Wailea Resort, Kapalua Spa and the Spa at Trump Waikiki Hotel. A native of Lima, Peru, Hercik began her career with Ritz-Carlton hotels. 2

well as the advanced equipment and modalities now available. “Our new ‘Human Sport’ strength equipment is user-defined, meaning that the plane of motion is not fixed, allowing for variability from user to user and offering superior biomechanics. For the ultimate functional experience, we also added a Throwdown Rig System, affectionately dubbed the ‘Ninja Warrior Wall’ by our staff,” Hercik says. The technologically advanced system includes bumper plates, kettlebells, land mines and medicine balls. Rig systems, she says, are incredibly popular today because although relatively compact they offer unlimited training modalities. “Looking for some intense core training? We now have the brand new Vicore 0-90 bench and the Terra Core which uses an air surface for greater comfort and more muscle activation. Even our new

dumbbells are state-of-the-art with gel urethane coverings for a superior grip that is also soft in the hand,” she says. The Club’s cardio pavilion is outfitted with Star Trac, a global leader in treadmill and stationary bike innovation, as well as new Stairmaster equipment. The Series 8 treadmills offer many benefits, including a patented shock absorption system that runs the length of the deck, providing better feel and greater return similar to running on grass. The high performance Peloton bikes offer a variety of indoor cycling classes from expert trainers around the globe. They’re perfect for those who prefer individual, rather than group classes for their High Intensity Intermittent Training (HIIT) sessions, featuring short periods of intense work with rest in between. Two new types of elliptical Continued on page 5

Continued from page 3 machines, some with front-drive and some with rear-drive, are in place in the cardio pavilion, providing Members with more training options than standard ellipticals. Meanwhile, just next door, the group exercise pavilion now boasts Schwinn AC Performance Plus Bikes with Carbon Blue Technology. “These are the best group cycling bikes in the industry with the greatest comfort, adjustability and Q-Factor,” Hercik says. Boga Boards are also part of the new equipment mix and are used by instructors in the Sports Club lap pool. Similar to stand up paddle boards, they are, however, broader with more floatation built-in and complete with stability straps that are attached to swim lane dividers when in use. They test core strength, balance and concentration in classes focused on traditional yoga and Pilates movements, as well as meditative breathing techniques. For a complete schedule of fitness classes or to book your personal training session, contact the Hualālai Sports Club at (808) 325-8440.

ince opening in 2003, the Members’ only Hualālai Canoe Club – the hub of all traditional Hawaiian ocean activities led by the Alaka‘i Nalu (masters of the waves) and a casual gathering and dining venue– has been a Member favorite. Following seven months of enhancements, a re-imagined Hualālai Canoe Club debuted

late last year. The water-centric club overlooking Uluweuweu Bay now features two swimming pools, additional shaded lounge seating, and two new elevated teak lānai with pristine beach and ocean views. A comfortable new lounge on the beach level houses the Alaka‘i Nalu, while serving as a reception area for relaxing pre-and post-ocean activities. With safety the number one priority, numerous 8

ocean sports are offered, among them: outrigger canoe paddling, stand up paddling, scooter snorkel and Ribcraft coastline adventures. “This project reflects our Resort owners’ commitment to continually elevating the experience of living at Hualālai,” says Rob Kildow, Director of Residential Sales.

Kūlanakauhale 11 New Homes

Local contractor Russ Trull and interior designer Gina Willman, both Hawai‘i Island residents, were chosen by Hualālai Resort Resident Ron Johnson to create the home plans for this new neighborhood. In addition, the talented Craig Chambers was tasked with the landscape planning. With a total of 8 of the 11 homes now sold, Hualālai Director of Sales Rob Kildow says, “We couldn’t be happier with the market reaction to these homes; it demonstrates a strong market demand for properties in this price range. It also illustrates an ongoing trend with existing villa owners opting to trade up to single family homes. Three of these properties have been sold to that very demographic.” This amazing neighborhood is located a short cart ride away from our Members’ only club facilities – the Ke‘olu Clubhouse and Golf Course, and the ocean front Hualālai Canoe Club. Prices for the remaining homes range from $4,000,000 to $4,900,000. Contact Hualālai Realty at (808) 325-8500 if you are interested in knowing more about this exciting neighborhood.

Trending NOW We had the chance to sit down with three of our long-time interior designers, along with the newest to make a mark here, celebrity designer Ross Cassidy, to talk story about the latest in design trends. We share their thoughts and tips here. WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS TRENDING MOST IN INTERIOR DESIGN IN HAWAI'I AND HUALALAI RESORT SPECIFICALLY?

Eric Henderson, Henderson Design Group, Kohala Coast and Honolulu, HI: Our clients continue to push for more modern, clean, simple and tranquil design. They want to live in casual elegance.

Gina Willman, Willman Interiors, Kamuela, HI: Outdoor kitchens and entertainment areas. Our climate allows families to entertain and cook outside all year long. Clients are wanting outdoor kitchens with multi-fuel grills (wood and gas), smokers, pizza ovens and side burners. We've had two 'foodie' clients install a Grillworks artisanal grill with a culinary pedigree recognized the world over. Comfortable outdoor lounging and entertaining areas. We’ve had requests for pop-up or wall-mounted TVs on the lānai.

Shirley Wagner, Fine Design Interiors Inc., Kamuela, HI: We are seeing a desire for handcrafted and sustainable furnishings created by local artisans. Clients want comfortable and sophisticated spaces with updated, clean-line furnishings. Ross Cassidy, Ross Cassidy, Inc., Los Angeles, CA: The movement away from an old fashioned tropical multi-colored “Hawaiian shirt” aesthetic to a more refined, sophisticated and muted style.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE SPACE YOU'VE CREATED FOR A CLIENT AT HUALALAI RESORT? Henderson: A cozy, comfortable and dark media “nook” close to the kitchen. Now my client always

Outdoor living spaces Wagner: Large scale outdoor floor pillows for extra seating – they’re modular and versatile. Cassidy: Outdoor drapes or bamboo blinds. I like to control the amount of light on a lānai at all times. Outdoor kitchen and entertaining area by Willman.

knows where her husband is!

Henderson: Phillip Jeffries!

Willman: A listening room for an audiophile client. A sound-proofed room with some seriously impressive equipment, built- in display and storage for the client’s extensive music and instrument collection. An impressive collection of signed electric guitars is proudly displayed with many collectors’ albums.

Wagner: Hand-applied marmorino plaster with integrated mica chips, crushed pearl, mother of pearl, and quartz.

Wagner: A media room containing authentic warrior shields from New Guinea. We suspended them from the ceiling to create sliding “doors” to camouflage the media area when not in use. These one-of-a-kind artifacts combined with streamlined modern Italian furnishings resulted in a sophisticated, Pacific Basin inspired, eclectic room.

YOUR "IT" THING OF THE MOMENT FOR... Decorative accessories Wagner: Pieces created by local artisans of organic, natural materials and shapes. Fine art and accessories that respect and honor Hawaiian cultural sensitivities. Cassidy: Curated collections. One thing is good, but 5 of the same thing are even better.

Fabrics Cassidy: Outdoor fabrics used indoors. I like fabrics that can stand up to a red wine stain! Wagner: Healthy home environments start with organic fabrics for bedding. Sustainability using durable, luxurious fabrics with longevity throughout the rest of the home.

Cassidy: Grass cloth never goes out of style!

Kitchen Willman: Steam ovens are being requested quite frequently. Henderson: A large island countertop – a place people can gather around. Wagner: Clients are just now starting to request appliances with blue tooth sync ability. Matte black finishes and mixed metal hardware are also popular.

Bedrooms Wagner: Organic mattresses and bedding. Cassidy: The best mattresses money can buy. A good night’s sleep is the ultimate luxury. Durable, luxurious fabrics used by Wagner.

Ross Cassidy’s

Beach Chic Vibe eventually dubbed me “The Architect”, he says. Now with 13 years in Southern California, Cassidy is an established celebrity designer, winning stellar clients with his signature ultra-modern, bold, minimalistic style. Among them singer Sia, actor/ comedian Billy Eichner, and actresses Amber Valletta and Gwyneth Paltrow. “My projects come strictly by word of mouth on the mainland and now on Hawai‘i Island as well,” he says. He completed his first home here in 2017, quickly landing a second project set to begin later this year. Ross Cassidy, above. Photo courtesy CB2

His beachy, casually elegant style combined with comfort and functionality translate perfectly from California coastal to Hawai‘i modern in natural wood materials, sustainable fabrics and colors – blues and greens predominant with neutral sand tones forming the base. Clearly shades of ocean and beach!

A

s with most mainland-based interior designers, Ross Cassidy landed his first custom home commission at Hualālai Resort via existing clients – in this case, a couple living primarily in Los Angeles, home to his firm Ross Cassidy, Inc. “They not only introduced me to Hualālai, but to Hawai‘i as well – I’d never been here before and I absolutely fell in love with the islands,” Cassidy says.

High on Cassidy’s agenda at the moment is a charitable organization, Healthy Decorating, he recently founded to explore the impact of design on the mind.

High praise from this in-demand, South African native who spent several years as a fashion model in London, Hong Kong and New York, traveling to exotic locations worldwide prior to pursuing his love for design.

“Décor has the power to heal, I really firmly believe this and science is starting to prove it to be true. Studies, for example, are showing how color can increase healing – great info for creating healing home environments and hugely important for health and wellness facilities,” he says.

“As a kid, I’d spend Sundays wandering around the neighborhood with my Dad. We’d sneak into construction sites and look at what people were building. I was completely obsessed with the design and construction of houses and hotels. It was something we really bonded over and my Dad

hile classic design is timeless, there’s no denying a refresh brings new life and vitality to an existing home.

For those considering selling, a design-to-sell approach also brings more value and often higher sales prices to the transactions, according to Hualālai Realty sales professionals. “With years of experience working with many of Hawai‘i Island’s top designers, our realty team has the knowledge and resources to match clients with the ‘just right’ designer to create the perfect refresh, bringing excitement and a competitive edge to the listing,” Rob Kildow, Director of Sales, says. Recently, Shirley Wagner, Principal Designer and Owner of award-winning Fine Design Interiors Inc. based in Kamuela, was tapped for a design-to-sell

project for a listing in the Estate Villas at Hainoa neighborhood, Kildow says. The firm also offers its services across the continental U.S. and beyond, bringing expertise from local as well as nationwide and international craftsmen and artisans, he says. “This was a first for us and has inspired our creation of a new business platform – Resort Homes Furnishing Collections, featuring a three-tiered approach based on the scale of the project, the extent of customized, luxury

products and how soon a client needs it completed,” Wagner says. “This collection joins our full-service luxury interior and sustainable design services.” For this Estate Villa, Wagner and Lead Project Designer Diane Bobek first determined what would stay and what would go, resulting in many of the existing furnishings and artwork to be repurposed in different areas. New furnishings, including an exquisite silk sari rug, replica warrior shields from Java, sofas and headboards were sourced all within budget and time-frame. Initially the duo was tapped to do the interior and exterior common areas. Mid-way through they convinced the owner to include the bedrooms for a more cohesive look. Abundant Blessings

ong-time Hualālai Resort “ambassador” of hospitality Earl Regidor, affectionately known as Uncle Earl, emphatically says, “I don’t like my job. I LOVE my job!”

sites and building custom homes, he says. “First there is the land blessing, this is when we ask permission from our ancestors to build on this ‘aina (land) and ask them to protect and keep everyone safe during construction, including the owners and their families. At this time, we also ask the property owners to always treat the ‘aina with dignity and respect.”

With 22 years of spreading aloha here, Uncle Earl is Director of the Hualālai Cultural Center, a treasure trove of Hawaiian history, culture, art and artifacts located directly beneath the Hualālai Grille.

“When the home is completed, a second blessing – a Hale Pule (house prayer) takes place as we make our way around the exterior of the residence and then through each room, making sure all is pono (right) and asking again that the inhabitants, family and friends are protected while finding joy in each other and their new home,” he says. A Hale Pule also is frequently performed for Members who purchase existing homes, not only newly constructed

Beloved for its many activities, resources and dedicated team of hosts, the center welcomes Members and guests daily to simply “talk story”, make a lei, enjoy lauhala weaving and gourd making, or learn traditional arts such as hula and ukulele. Uncle Earl is also frequently recruited to perform traditional Hawaiian blessings for Members’ homes– a house dedication known as Pule Ho‘o ola ‘a hale. The blessings are twofold for those purchasing home

residences. 35

Beach HOUSE

all it first love or call it paradise perfect, either way it’s “A place of our own,” according to many long-time Hualālai Resort Members. The much beloved Residents’ Beach House was the resort’s initial dining venue, serving its first meals in February 1996, and it remains a Member favorite today. Casual, comfortable and familiar, this charming restaurant and bar dishes up uber-fresh, innovative

and delicious food and drink while conjuring up treasured memories of good times with family and friends over the years. Situated beachside at the edge of Waiakauhi fishpond on the southern end of Hualālai, natural beauty abounds and the tranquil, kick back and relax vibe is ever present. With its plank decking, dramatic driftwood light fixture, surf-culture inspired wall art and silver hardwood, the ambiance is clearly beach chic. 36

Once you land here it’s hard to leave, so it’s no surprise that many of the employees are as familiar as the place itself, having welcomed Members and guests for years with much aloha, including lead chef Eric Garrett. At the Beach House stoves for 16 years, Garrett, who grew up ocean side in Monterey, California, says his love for food was inspired by the diverse produce cultivated in nearby Salinas Valley and the

seafood from Monterey Bay. Hawai‘i Island with its relaxed lifestyle, bountiful produce and extraordinary fish, has proven to be a perfect fit for the laid back, talented and adventurous sous chef. While he happily owns his California/Mediterranean influenced cooking style, his worldwide travels and time spent living abroad are also evident in the bold, bright flavors showcased in many of the signature dishes.

Making his way to Hawai‘i Island in 2002 via the food and wine scene in San Francisco, Garrett says when he wasn’t cooking in an Italian restaurant in North Beach, he was busy eating at “every ethnic restaurant you can imagine in the city from Mexican and Vietnamese to Greek and Japanese and many, many more,” he says. That tasty research also expanded his culinary imagination.

Garrett credits a major kitchen expansion in the fall of 2017 for making it possible to experiment and create a larger menu with numerous new dishes, while maintaining many of the classics. “This is especially exciting for me and the entire culinary team, our front of house staff and, most importantly, our lunch and dinner guests,” he says. Among the popular new lunch

“I lived in Beirut, Lebanon with my family for five years and fell in love with the local shawarmas, and will feature one as a special here from time to time,” Garrett says. For those not in the know, shawarma, one of the world’s most popular street foods, is a slow roasted Levantine meat preparation rolled up in Lafa bread and most often eaten with cucumbers, tomatoes, hummus or tahini. A year living in Bangkok, Thailand as a teenager also fired up Garret’s passion for noodle dishes and the distinct flavor of coconut. “The food there blew my mind! I still remember the flavors and textures as if it were yesterday. Our house-made coconut sorbet here at the Beach House takes me right back to Thailand,” he says.

additions are Hawai‘i Kampachi Civiche with Tomatoes, Avocado, Jalapeno Peppers, Papaya and Lime; and a BLT Salad showcasing Waimea Baby Romaine, Tomatoes, Smoked Bacon and Croutons tossed with a Buttermilk Chive Dressing. “These new dishes complement long-time classics including our Chilled Tomato Gazpacho with lime cream and tortilla strips;

Hawaiian Tombo Tuna Melt; and the Greek Salad with Big Island Butter Lettuce, Tomatoes, Peppers, Cucumber and Crumbled Feta Cheese.” Meanwhile, new dinner offerings feature Slow Braised Kona Clams in a Kaffir Lime Coconut Curry Sauce; Roasted Big Island Abalone with Garlic Pernod Butter; Grilled Keahole Lobster with Roasted Local Root 38

Vegetables; and sauted Onaga in a Hawaiian Chili Pepper Vinaigrette topped with Tomato Avocado Relish. “Both menus illustrate a renewed emphasis on the highest quality, locally sourced seafood and produce. Creating culinary memories keeps me motivated and energized. We’re always looking for the next great dish,” he says.

Luxury Retail

REVOLUTION

“We started with impeccable store design and a buying strategy that is client-centric and we’ve never looked back,” she says.

Now with 30 stores in several countries, the Santa Monica-based Maris Collective is dedicated to searching out treasures from every corner of the world. Over the past decade, she says, we have forged experience-based, meaningful relationships with resort partners and luxury brands to keep customers happily returning over and over again. The retail concept, Sauter says, is customized at each location to reflect its unique ambiance and culture. “We do this by integrating elements from local and international sources, while maintaining authenticity within a stylish and sophisticated retail environment.”

decade after introducing Seaside Luxe and Seaside Beach boutiques at Hualālai Resort, retail industry visionary Lee Ann Sauter, founder and CEO, debuted the Maris Collective this year and has emerged as the established leader in multi-brand retail experiences at luxury resorts around the globe.

Of Latin origin, Maris means “of the sea” and the sea, Sauter says, “has always been integral to our identity and a source of our inspiration.” Just as the sea is always moving, things at the Seaside Luxe and Seaside Beach boutiques are always in motion, always evolving. With a core of long-time designers (James Perse, Missoni, Pucci, Stella McCartney and Letarte among them) new lines are constantly being added, Ramona Gulbransen, Director of Resort Retail, says. “In-store pop ups and seasonal trunk shows keep things fresh adding excitement to the retail experience. It’s a win-win for all-our staff, seasoned and upcoming designers, resort Residents and hotel guests,” Gulbransen says.

In 2008, the two Seaside boutiques revolutionized traditional resort retail, elevating it to ultrasophisticated standards by featuring internationally acclaimed fashion designers and jewelers that resonate with homeowners and hotel guests at five diamond resorts worldwide. “Through our experience, my partners and I recognized that resort retail hadn’t evolved at the same rate as the culinary, guest room and amenity experiences at most luxury resorts, so we set out to change that,” Sauter, a 25-year veteran of the retail industry, says.
