HOO ready for EU accession funds At its 15th session of 28 June, the Council of the Croatian Olympic Committee decided to establish a new European Union Programs unit – thus preparing for vital national coordination of sports projects and programs in the use of European Union funds. The leading position in this unit was assigned to the current assistant of the General Secretary for local sports programs, Alma Papić, who acquired high professional qualifications with the International Olympic Committee. According to the announcement of the Council and HOO Chairman Zlatko Mateša, projects for the continuing education of athletes ("A Career after the Career"), a network of female sports coordinators, sports infrastructure in individual regions, and combined sportstourist projects for economic development in cooperation with local governments have already been prepared. Olympic Day in Croatia The main celebration of Olympic Day in Croatia was organized by the Croatian Olympic Committee on June 23 in Zagreb. It included many educational and athletic activities. The event was prepared by the Croatian Olympic Committee, the Croatian Olympians Club (HKO), the Croatian Olympic Academy (HOA), and the Croatian School Sports Federation (HŠSS). More than 600 primary school student (from the first to the fourth grade) and 150 teachers participated in the event. They were joined by famous Croatian Olympians like Vlado Šola, a legendary handball goal keeper; Perica Bukić, a triple water polo Olympian; Stojko Vranković, two times a winner of the Olympic medal in basketball; Gordan Kožulj, a world-class swimmer; Martina Zubčić, winner of an Olympic bronze medal in taekwondo; Tomislav Paškvalin, a respected water polo Olympian; Damir Škaro, winner of a bronze medal in boxing; Mirza Džomba, an Olympic handball legend; and Danira Bilić, a silver medal winning basketball Olympian, who is also the coordinator of the Olympic Day celebration in Croatia. 2010 is also the year when the first Youth Olympic Games were held (2010 YOG in Singapore). For this reason, the participants of the first YOG in Singapore 2010 also joined the celebration: Romana Tea Kirinić, Filip Boroša, Ivan Biondić, Ivan Capan, Luka Fučec, Mateja Jeger, Rea Budić, and Valentina Pereglin. By merging youth and experience, athletic and Olympic Croatia joined together to celebrate the concept of universal values in life and sports: solidarity, fair play, creativity, joy and peace. HOO and MORH working together for Croatian athletes On 3 September on 3 September, in the presence of Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor, a number of distinguished persons from politics and sports, including Olympians, Zlatko Mateša, the Chairman of the Croatian Olympic Committee, and Minister of Defense Branko Vukelić, signed an agreement on cooperation, improvement and development of sports in Croatia at the Ministry of Defense (MORH) in Zagreb. The first document in history on long-term cooperation between the Ministry of Defense and the Croatian Olympic Committee foresees many possibilities for partnership that will benefit Croatian athletes and sports as a whole, including: accommodation in military-sports facilities during athletic events, logistical support by MORH during the organization of athletic competitions, joint planning of construction and/or redevelopment and use of athletic facilities, and employment of top-ranked and categorized sportsmen in MORH. "Signing of the agreement is a historic step forward for Croatian sport. The event will inevitably mark the years ahead of the Croatian sport," said HOO Chairman, Zlatko Mateša, pointing out the great significance of agreeing on employment possibilities for top athletes in the armed forces of the Republic of Croatia, a standard practice in NATO member countries.
