An America where no one is hungry

We know that hunger is a complex issue, so we're tackling it from all angles. We're working to improve access to nutritious food, expand economic security, and advocate for policies that make it easier for people to get the food they need.

We’re part of a nationwide network of food banks, food pantries and community-based organizations in the United States working to create a future where no one is hungry.

Working with local food banks and meal programs

When you support Feeding America, you are helping a nationwide network of food banks, food pantries, and meal programs provide resources so people facing hunger can put food on the table.

“HRA means family, authenticity. Giving members programs and incentives keeps customers coming through the doors.”

“I think the vision and the collaboration with the company itself, is more about the client. They actually think for us, they help us to save money for profits, from rebates, from collective bargaining. They make it all easy.”

A Message from Your HRA Team

This year is flying by quickly. We are already in July and halfway finished with 2024. Q1 Rebates have been successfully dispersed via ACH transaction or by live checks sent by direct mail. We encourage all of our valued members to opt-in to receive ACH payment for a faster, and more secure method of receiving quarterly rebates. The first half of 2024 also marks yet another milestone for HRA, our members, and our supporting vendor partners, as we hosted our 8th Annual Charity Golf Tournament on May 9th! Mother Nature, unfortunately, had other plans and presented a challenge with severe weather and thunderstorms! Nonethe-less, we prevailed and did what we do best by making sure we did not let the weather stop us from raising funds to help fight cancer, support these amazing kids, and make a difference by contributing to cancer research. This year we raised well over $61,000, bringing our total to more than $250,000 in our partnership with Cure over the past 5 years!

2024 is complex and unpredictable with inflation showing signs of improvement, but interest rates still unfavorable; a stock market still as volatile as during Covid, and the cost of goods still at an all-time high. The elections around the corner do not make it easier on consumer spending or large business investments in the convenience sector. Big Tobacco continues to ensure their margin protection with rigorous manufacturer price increases every quarter, in an already declining category. We continue to play the guessing game with the long awaited and explicit federal ban on flavored tobacco and Menthol cigarettes which is still in limbo amid several rounds of voting and lobbying. Flavored vapes and e-cigs have become a $30 billion dollar industry with an expected growth rate of 30% from 2023-2030 which is helping drive overall gross profits and revenue to fill gaps from other declining tobacco categories. These are some of the unstable and volatile market trends that we still see no clear resolution on, but industry experts suggest positive developments and stable growth in the beverage and food service segment.

For convenience stores in the United States, the carbonated beverage sales grew to $10.7 billion dollars at the end of 2023, 7.4% year-over-year growth from 2022. Some of this growth is due to manufacturer price increases of 6.4%, but unit sales fell flat and up only .9%. Industry experts project unit sales trending in a positive direction during the second half of 2024. This outlook comes from our consumers challenging the norm and demanding more innovations, more flavors, and smaller packaging sizes from carbonated beverage companies. Latest trends show heavy emphasis on low and no sugar offerings, more natural ingredients, and less additive artificial recipes. The traditional consumer and new Gen-Z customers are moving away from full sugar recipe products. Beverages, Salty Snacks, and Grab N Go Food Service are expected to drive sales in 2024. CocaCola’s 2023 “ishop Tracking Study” showed consumers ages 16 to 24 shop 25% more than the average consumer in a convenience store, hence market research and investment by big beverage companies is being geared and catered to the younger drinkers.

We see 2024 trending positively in new and emerging categories within carbonated, alternative energy, water, and isotonic, leading to higher revenue and favorable margins in the cold vault. We will continue to focus on such industry trends, emerging brands, and market leaders that will bring value to HRA members, create incremental sales opportunities, and in return drive revenue and profits to our Member stores.

What better way to continue the second half of 2024 than by announcing our upcoming events and member gatherings! Please join HRA Foundation on Saturday, August 3, 2024 as we host our 1st Annual Hunger Relief 5K Walk/Run in support of Feeding America, at SweetWater Brewery in Atlanta. Help us fight hunger and make an impact as we walk, run, smile, laugh, and celebrate life while raising funds to do our part for the ever-increasing fight against hunger and malnutrition! This incredible and powerful event will lead us into our 3rd Annual C-Store Connect Trade Show on Wednesday, September, 18 2024. This year’s trade show will be bigger than ever with 120 manufacturers and vendors exhibiting in over 100 booths. Join us for incredible show deals, bookings, prizes, raffles and much more as we celebrate 2024 and capitalize on strong and aggressive member perks and rebates negotiated on behalf of our members!

We Aim to CURE Childhood Cancer

Established in 1975, CURE Childhood Cancer is dedicated to conquering childhood cancer through funding targeted research while supporting patients and their families.

When CURE was founded, survival rates for children with cancer were just 20%. Thanks to continued research, survival rates have improved to over 80% today. Still, 1 in 5 do not survive. And even when effective, current treatments are harsh and often leave survivors with life long physical, emotional, and cognitive scars.

Research is the key to unlocking breakthroughs that will save the lives of children with cancer. In the past 15 years, CURE has invested $38 million in the most promising research aimed at solving childhood cancers. Our highest priority is precision medicine, treatment targeted at tumor driving genes, which is already yielding significant results for children with recurrent and hard to treat cancers.

At CURE, we are also focused on supporting families devastated by a childhood cancer diagnosis through programs designed to meet a family’s emotional, practical, and financial needs. CURE serves meals in the hospital, provides emergency financial support to ease burdens, and offers professional counseling to patients and family members. We also offer bereavement support for families who must deal with unimaginable loss. These are only a few of the ways we serve childhood cancer patients and their families. CURE’s support encompasses dozens of services designed to lighten the load of the families and make sure they know they aren’t alone.

The HRA Scholars Program

The HRA Scholars Program is a scholarship program dedicated to empowering the next generation of leaders within the HRA member community. This year, we will award 10 full-time high school seniors, $2500 each, to support their educational endeavors. Each awardee will join the HRA member community as an “HRA scholar” and mentor a child locally, or abroad. Through this program we strive to channel young minds, driving positive change, innovation, and mentorship within our community.

We had an amazing amount of submissions this year! Subscribe to our newsletter to keep up with Scholarship updates! Head to hrafoundation.com to learn more

Safeguard Your Business

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS

Industry Insider for Risk Management By Insurance Simplified

Choosing the right insurance policy for your convenience store involves several key steps.

Assess Your Risks

Identify the specific risks your store faces, such as theft, vandalism, food safety issues, natural disasters, and cyber threats. Understanding these risks will help you determine the types of coverage you need.

Understand Coverage Options

Familiarize yourself with the various types of insurance available for convenience stores, including:

• General Liability Insurance: Covers third-party claims of bodily harm and property damage.

• Commercial Property Insurance: Protects your store’s physical assets from damage or loss.

• Workers’ Compensation Insurance: Covers medical expenses and lost wages for employees injured on the job.

• Commercial Auto Insurance: Covers vehicles used for business purposes.

• Cyber Liability Insurance: Protects against data breaches and cyberattacks.

Compare Quotes

Obtain quotes from multiple insurance providers to compare coverage options, deductibles, and premiums. This will help you find the best value for your specific needs.

Consult an Insurance Agent

An independent insurance agent can provide personalized advice and help you navigate the complexities of choosing the right policy. They can also assist in identifying any potential gaps in coverage.

Review Policy Details

Carefully review the terms and conditions of each policy, including coverage limits, exclusions, and any additional endorsements that may be necessary for your business.

Consider a Business Owner’s Policy (BOP)

A BOP bundles general liability and commercial property insurance into one policy, often at a lower cost than purchasing these coverages separately. By following these steps, you can ensure that your convenience store is adequately protected against the various risks it faces. If you have any specific questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask!

Estimating the value of your store’s assets for property insurance involves several steps:

1. Create an Inventory

List all the items in your store, including furniture, fixtures, equipment, inventory, and any other assets. Be as detailed as possible.

2.Determine Replacement Costs

For each item, estimate the cost to replace it with a new one. This is known as the replacement cost value. You can find these values by checking current prices on-line or consulting with suppliers.

3.Consider Depreciation

Some insurance policies use actual cash value (ACV), which factors in depreciation. This means the value of an item decreases over time due to wear and tear. Calculate the depreciated value if your policy requires it.

4.Use Professional Appraisals

For high-value items or specialized equipment, consider getting a professional appraisal. This can provide a more accurate valuation and ensure you have adequate coverage.

5.Review Fixed-Asset Records

If you have detailed records of your assets, use these to help estimate their value. Adjust for inflation and any changes in market value.

6.Consult with Your Insurance Agent

An insurance agent can provide guidance on how to accurately estimate the value of your assets and ensure you have the right coverage limits.

By following these steps, you can get a comprehensive estimate of your store’s assets and ensure you have the appropriate level of property insurance coverage. If you need further assistance, feel free to ask!
