Dial 000
Community Emergency Response Team (known as CERT)
Howlong’s CERT is only for 000 emergencies, not general medical needs
The only way to contact them when you require urgent medical attention is to dial 000 and your call will be directed to Howlong’s CERT
When the Howlong CERT receive a callout, a NSW Ambulance will also be ordered, and the CERT will stay in close contact as it travels to the required address
The only time our CERT will not be sent is if they are off duty due to their heavy workload or personal illness
The highest priority is the health and well-being of our volunteers at all times. In this case, a NSW Ambulance will be sent
You will see the Howlong CERT vehicle about town As the CERT share the responsibility when on duty, it is always housed in Howlong so they can quickly get to anyone in urgent need of medical attention
If you need any small tasks done, that you may not be able to undertake yourself, and may be too small for professionals to undertake, we may be able to assist
The Men’s Shed aims to give all men the opportunity to improve and maintain their health and well-being by participating in the Men’s Shed not-for-profit movement If you become a member you may contribute via woodworking activities, metalwork, painting, sanding, wood chopping, and gardening endeavours You don’t have to participate in these activities, you can just drop in and have a chat If you are interested in joining the Howlong Men’s Shed, contact us or just "rock up "
Howlong Pharmacy Health Advice
Winter Skincare: Keep Your Glow When the Temperature Drops
When winter rolls around, it brings with it cozy sweaters, hot drinks, and dry, tight skin Cold air and low humidity outside, combined with heaters blasting indoors, can strip your skin of its natural moisture barrier But with a few thoughtful changes to your routine, you can keep your skin happy, hydrated, and glowing even on the coldest days
Hydration is your best friend. Your skin needs help to stay moisturized in drier months, so opt for a richer, cream-based moisturizer instead of lightweight lotions Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin are winter skin superheroes they help lock in moisture and repair your skin barrier
Gentle cleansing is key Harsh cleansers can make dry skin worse Choose a mild, hydrating cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight. And while a hot shower may feel like heaven, try to keep the water lukewarm hot water strips oils from your skin even faster
Don’t ditch the sunscreen. Even when it’s grey and chilly, UV rays can still reach your skin, especially if you ' re around reflective surfaces like snow or water A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is still essential every morning Exfoliate… just enough. Sloughing off dead skin helps your moisturizer absorb better, but overdoing it can cause irritation Aim for once or twice a week with a gentle exfoliant no harsh scrubs needed
Love your lips and hands These areas are especially vulnerable in winter, so keep a nourishing lip balm and thick hand cream within reach Reapply throughout the day, especially after washing
Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of indoor humidity Running a humidifier while you sleep can do wonders for your skin overnight And of course, drinking plenty of water helps hydrate from the inside out
With a few simple swaps and some added TLC, your winter skincare routine can keep you comfortable and glowing all season Your skin’s working hard to protect you from the elements give it a little love back. Pop in and see our friendly staff to review/update your winter skincare regimen
TMISS ADVENTURES MISADVENTURES
o continue my journey to Arkaroola I first stopped at Leigh Creek The main purpose for this was to fill up with fuel.
I was very unsure if fuel was available at Arkaroola. And the Flinders Ranges is not a great place to get stuck with a car with an empty fuel tank Mind you, it is the most expensive fuel that I can recall in any place I have visited in Australia Even more expensive than Kangaroo Island I decided to have a quick tour of the town, and it was decidedly lifeless I suspect it has been that way since the coal mine at Copley closed down in 2016 I moved onto Copley and turned onto the Gammon Ranges Rd For a gravel road, the surface was more than passable However, the stones themselves seemed a bit larger and sharper than one would find on gravel roads in our area It is about 130Kms from Copley to Arkaroola Resort and Google Maps suggests that it takes just over two and a half hours I think this is a time you are guaranteed not to better Especially if you stop to take in some of the sights
The road has a number of blind spots and caution is advised.
The first stopping place was at IGA Warta I did not think that a supermarket of this description would be found in this area And I suspected that it bore no resemblance to a business in Howlong with a not dissimilar name. And my judgement was correct I dropped in and once again found everything to be closed I was desperate for some refreshment, preferably one with some caffeine content If that was not possible, an ice cream would have made a good second choice. But there was nothing open here I did wonder what the establishment was all about Later research showed that it has a number of accommodation options, and looking at the website they are very reasonably priced Another example of my poor timing for this trip So, I moved on At Balcanoona the road takes a sharp turn to the left and you come across a ‘pedestrian crossing’ .
Now I use the words loosely. As do they There is no indication of such a facility being present Nor any pedestrians But here in the middle of nowhere, there is such a sign. If only the pedestrians of Howlong were given the same courtesy I moved on and very shortly afterwards blew a tyre on the camper trailer Almost immediately a car pulled up beside me and the driver asked did I need help I advised the driver ‘No’ Little did I realise how much of a challenge this task would be Firstly, I got out my air compressor but it was not up to the task. So, I got out my tyre repair kit Another failure There was no choice but to change the tyre And that is when my problems really got magnified.
Arkaroola flat tyre
The only jack I had was for the car. I found it difficult to find a suitable location for it under the camper trailer I eventually raised the camper a sufficient height to remove the wheel. I then found that the inflated tyre did not have sufficient clearance to place it on the axle I tried deflating the tyre (remembering I had an air compressor) But I just couldn’t get it low enough to fit it to the axle
I had no choice but to dig a hole under the axle Sadly, despite all the things I had thought to bring, there was nothing designed to dig a hole. The only tool I had that I thought might be up to the task was a wheel brace It was very hot work so stops to cool down and rehydrate were frequent. After 90 minutes I had almost completed the task when a vehicle pulled up and asked could they help They were obviously workers of some sort I advised that I thought I had the situation under control They agreed and asked did I have food and water. I advised that I had sufficient for several days, which pleased them They said they were going to Arkaroola and I made an agreement with them that they would send out the search parties should I not arrive by 6 00pm
I arrived at Arkaroola at 5:40pm. As I entered the reception the workers I had seen on the road greeted me I thanked them for their concern It is good to know that they were genuinely concerned for me and followed through with the agreed plan
I was very dry so I ordered a beer All beer at the Arkaroola Resort is sold in cans I ordered one, and received no change from my $10 That was the last beer I purchased in South Australia on this trip
After a quick shower I made my way back to the restaurant and bar I ordered dinner. Chicken schnitzel with salad, no chips At least this time a got a well-prepared meal Pleasant to eat and was not unreasonably priced
I slept well that evening However, I did have the air conditioner on all night
I must admit the room was more than adequate It was roomy, had a double and a single bed and a clean, reasonably sized modern bathroom. In the morning the first thing I spotted as I exited my room was a snake It was only small, no more than 30cms And it seemed to be looking for a home As it searched the front of my verandah it took no notice of me I snapped several photos But let me assure you I spent the next couple of days studying the ground
On the third night a bus load of tourists had arrived The restaurant closed and instead they organised a BBQ by the pool It was all you could eat for $40. Not wanting to fight with forty or so aged tourists over food, I delayed my arrival by about an hour That was another mistake When I arrived, there was still plenty of food. But some of the things that I would have liked to try had all been consumed, including lamb backstrap. But still it was a gourmandizer’s delight
Saturday morning came and I am pleased to report that I did not come across another snake It was time to make tracks It was my intention to make my way to Copley, then onto Maree and up the Oodnadatta track.
The condition of the road had not improved in the three days Hardly unexpected But I was getting rather anxious about losing another tyre I was a little more careful than I was when making my way to Arkaroola. I was very much relieved when I pulled into the park at Copley seemingly without incident I took a nature break but upon making my way back to the car I noticed that the rear tyre was half flat And within five minutes it was fully flat Well, it could have happened in a worse place. And it was the car tyre, not the camper tyre So once again things could have been worse I got to work
To be continued
The snake at Arkaroola
Book Review
And Elderly Lady Is Up To No
Good
By Helene Tursten
This was a most interesting choice It is really a collection of five short stories, each unrelated to the other, except through the central character, Maud. Maud is an 88 year old spinster who doesn’t mind murdering any person who annoys her Each for a different reason
It is fair to say these are not murder mysteries It is obvious that the murderer is Maud Nor are the murder plots sophisticated Though it is fair to say that one of them was clever And another was clever in the way that the police were put on the wrong track
The writing style is simple. It is a very easy read. Suitable for just about any reading level. And mildly amusing
If you would like an easy, entertaining read this may be the book for you
It was first published in 2013 Since then, another two sequels have been released I am sure that many of the readers of this book will be very keen to read the sequels Helene is also a prolific author of genuine crime novels While not well known in this country she is highly regarded in her native Sweden
I am confident many people will get to know her better in the near future
And I suspect there are some people in prison who regret not having read this book before committing their crimes
Until next month, happy reading

We didn’t quite know what to expect at the first combined Churches lunch for 2025 after I handed over the leadership to Lyn from the Generation Life Church The new team excelled themselves as when entering the hall, we were greeted by Helen and saw that the tables were decorated with gum leaves and fairy lights Each person attended received a packet of seeds with a card that said ‘let us continue to plant seeds of faith, love and goodness in our community’.
Mary Miles opened the event with a Bible reading from Psalm 139 and a prayer of thankfulness to God Helen Bensley spoke about the fridge project at St Thomas Anglican Church where those in need can come and help themselves to grocery items stored in the outside fridge
We sang the popular hymn Amazing Grace together with Rod Bensley playing the piano Lyn was keen to find out who was the oldest resident in Howlong and Mick Nesbitt won the prize The newest members were Mark and Rachael who have only moved to Howlong in the past 6 months
A beautiful card all the way from Vietnam was presented to Grace Lavis who had, with lots of help, established and organised the Combined Church Luncheon since 2016 When asked to say a few words, Grace was surprised and speechless but added that anything she had done, the good Lord had enabled her to do it All her life God has been her helper
Pastor Joe said grace and a special thanks was given to Judy Sheppard and her team for her catering skills A comment was made about how good the food was, but they ate too much!
We had a few stories from locals, including Margaret who shared about her Godly mother and how her faith has sustained her through some very challenging times Mary shared about the South Coast bushfires of 2019 when she and some of her family was encircled by fire without food, water and communication for three days They prayed and prayed and prayed some more and the fire changed direction
Rachael shared that God sees our heart and loves us A wonderful raw story of how God can change and restore a life who opens to Him One of the songs she sang to us was how God made something beautiful out of her life
‘Something beautiful, something good, all my confusion He understood, All I had to offer Him was brokenness and strife, but He made something beautiful out of my life’.
We had fun with the lucky door prize draws and then dessert was served A closing hymn and prayer from Pastor Graeme and the afternoon was over Congratulations Lyn, we are looking forward to the next lunch in early 2026

ST BRIGIDS CATHOLIC CHURCH NEWS
It’s a pity we don’t have a football team called ‘the Angels’ because they fly a lot higher than ‘magpies’ and ‘crows’ and even ‘eagles’ Angels are in the air as we turn the corner on another month September ended with the feast of the Archangels (Sept 29) : Michael, Gabriel and Raphael who feature especially in pivotal moments in the Bible October begins with the Feast of the Guardian Angels (Oct 2) There are many stories of angels and there powerful protection. For example, my father whose 93 birthday was on September 28, I believe has been saved by angels a number of times: one day decades ago he was on a tram in New Zealand (Wellington) going down a high hill and it was so full that he had couldn’t get in at first but the tram was dangerously speeding down the hill as he clung on for dear life Suddenly one arm reached out to him from inside and pulled him in (and he couldn’t find that person to thank!) Also during WWII a hand grenade was thrown at his feet and exploded. People in the hospital nearby heard the bang and looked out to see my father walking out of a cloud of smoke He sustained only a few marks on the back of his legs. More recently, he had a massive heart attack and I was praying beside him as the paramedics were using a defibrillator There was no response for some time Just when they were about to give up, there was a murmur Thanks be to God, my father survived a heart attack that the hospital heart specialist later said “only 2 in 100 people survive!” rd
Pope Leo the 14 was elected on May 8, 2025, which happens to be anniversary of a most famous Apparition of St. Michael the Archangel in Italy. This creates a historical parallel with Pope Leo the 13 , who was also devoted to the Archangel A story has been told of Pope Leo 13 that one day, in the 1890s, he had just finished celebrating Mass, and he came out from the sacristry with an ashen face th th th Someone said, “Holy Father, what’s wrong?”
And he said: “I’ve had a vision from God, in which Satan said to Jesus Christ: I can destroy your church Give me a century.” He said, “You can have the 20 . And as a result of that, Leo wrote the famous prayer to St Michael That prayer is still said traditionally each week in the Catholic churches of Howlong and Walbundrie th

Graham Brown was guest speaker on the 4 Sunday. We always enjoy his ministry and prayer time, and many little stories from his life, especially while out riding his bike To illustrate a Bible reading from Luke 15:3-9 about a lost sheep and a lost coin, Graham reminded the older members of the congregation how we get very anxious when we lose something and can’t remember where we put it, and what joy there is when the lost is found The angels in heaven rejoice when a person repents of sin and a lost soul in found th Graham prayed for people in Howlong and all over the world: - for the cessation of fighting in the Ukraine and in Gasa and the release of the hostages - for those in the world who are hungry and homeless - that we would praise God and give him the glory
We sang hymns praising God and telling of his faithfulness The first verse of ‘The King of love my shepherd is’, is encouragement to us: “The King of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his and he is mine forever”
Services are at 9.30am on 2nd and 4th Sundays. Followed by a cuppa and a chat in the hall. You are welcome to attend.
