TThe July meeting of the RSL was well attended by 15 members who braved the cold and wet weather to attend Many of these members then had a very nice meal over at the club Once again, the old Pro Shop was a perfect venue to hold a meeting

The first coffee morning was very successful with around 12 people who attended for coffee, cake and a chat at the ‘3 Pigs’ outside in the sunshine

It has been decided that the coffee mornings will be held on the 3 Saturday of each month from 10.30am at the ‘3 Pigs’.

The third Saturday is the Saturday following the monthly meeting Joker Poker is going very well Thank you to all of the volunteers who brave the cold to help It is a most enjoyable evening and the 2+ hours seem to go quickly The chats are fun too

Vietnam Veterans Day

Vietnam Vets Day is on Monday 18 August There will be the usual service conducted at the Howlong cenotaph on 18 August at 12 00 (Noon) to acknowledge Vietnam Veteran’s Day and remember those lost and grieved by their relatives The service will include a wreath being laid

The Vietnam War from 1962 to 1975 was one of the longest conflicts in the 20th century Some 60,000 Australian defence personnel served in Vietnam over 10 years of the war Our initial commitment of 30 military advisers in 1962 grew to include a battalion in 1965 and a task force in 1966 Australia's last combat troops came home in March 1972, about 3 years before the war ended Some Australians returned to Vietnam in 1975 to help with evacuations and humanitarian work during the war ' s final days

More than 500 Australians died in the war Over 3,000 Australians were evacuated with wounds, injuries or illness

After combat operations ceased in 1972, a few Australian personnel stayed in Vietnam with the Australian embassy Some RAAF personnel returned in 1975 to help with evacuations and refugees, operating almost until the moment of South Vietnam's surrender

(Taken from the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs Anzac Portal)

Next Sub-Branch meeting will be Monday 11 August 2025 at 6 00pm at the Old Pro Shop at the Golf Resort followed by dinner Visitors are always welcome Keith Truin (Publicity Officer) 60 265 274

Community Emergency Response Team (known as CERT)

Howlong’s CERT is only for 000 emergencies, not general medical needs

The only way to contact them when you require urgent medical attention is to dial 000 and your call will be directed to Howlong’s CERT

When the Howlong CERT receive a callout, a NSW Ambulance will also be ordered, and the CERT will stay in close contact as it travels to the required address.

The only time our CERT will not be sent is if they are off duty due to their heavy workload or personal illness The highest priority is the health and well-being of our volunteers at all times. In this case, a NSW Ambulance will be sent

You will see the Howlong CERT vehicle about town As the CERT share the responsibility when on duty, it is always housed in Howlong so they can quickly get to anyone in urgent need of medical attention

Howlong Pharmacy Health Advice

Winter Skincare: Keep Your Glow When the Temperature Drops

We know that community health goes beyond just taking the right medication It involves providing opportunities for all of us to lead interactive, socially connected lives within a healthy environment This includes those that may need extra support. Earlier this year Howlong Pharmacy launched its Community Heroes fund raising campaign for 2025 Non-prescription purchases were given a token to put into the container for the Community Hero of your choice

The three Community Heroes chosen for the 2025 campaign were:HOWLONG HISTORICAL SOCIETY FRIENDS OF OOLONG HOWLONG TOY LIBRARY

With your support we began raising funds, through cash donations, raffles and the donation of Loyalty Card dollars, for the above Howlong Community causes that were important to you With the campaign now complete, money has been counted and the tokens have been tallied The funds have been distributed amongst the nominated Community Heroes groups according to the number of tokens collected in each container The funds are being distributed directly to each group, which means that they can tailor the donation to support their immediate goals whether purchasing new equipment or expanding services

We wish to thank our customers for their generosity and support. In an era where small gestures mean everything, the Howlong Community has proven that community connection is a powerful force and sometimes, the strongest medicine comes from simply showing you care

And, of course, our Healthcare Heroes staff in the pharmacy will continue to provide service to you on key health issues experienced by many of us, offering expert advice and tools to help you

OMISS ADVENTURES MISADVENTURES

On the Sunday I made my way from Carrieton to Hawker It is a short, and generally uninteresting trip

Just on 70 kms On arriving at Hawker, I found it to be largely closed I was starting to get used to this So after booking into my motel I made my way to Quorn

Quorn was once an important railway town Both the main north south and east west railway lines passed through Quorn But that is no longer the case Today it serves as a service town to the surrounding agricultural district, a gateway to the Flinders Ranges for those travelling from Adelaide, and as a tourist town As I wandered around town, I found it to be a hive of inactivity The walk revealed that the well-known Pichi Richi Railway will not be running for another fortnight or so Another item that cannot be crossed off the bucket list just yet

And then I found an advert for available positions at the nearby Port Augusta Prison It was offering secure government positions But it was perfectly ambiguous, so I was unsure if the secure government positions referred to the inmates or the prison officers Or possibly to both

I then stumbled across the Quorn Take-Away & Pet Supplies Now, even if it was open I was not going to go in there! A name most uninviting I did eventually find the Scruffy Fella coffee shop which was open, and I had a very pleasant coffee I made my way to the local supermarket. I was in need of some supplies Let me assure you that there are no price match guarantees in Quorn Still, they had what I needed which was better than not being able to get them I decided to make my way back to Hawker

On my way back to Hawker I had a couple of interesting experiences Firstly, as I was driving along a rather large eagle flew out of a small tree to my right. It then flew parallel to the driver’s side window for some distance And no more than two metres from me It was something to behold! It was very fortunate that I was not distracted for a longer period of time I could have easily ended up somewhere I shouldn’t be But it was an experience I won’t easily forget

th

There were a number of other places that looked interesting but due to unclear signage I decided not to detour However, one place did catch my eye And that was Wilson Wilson is, or rather was, an agricultural district. During the second half of the 19 Century, it was thought the area could support crops And in some years, there were good yields However, the losses of the bad years outweighed the profits that could be made in the good years By 1950 cropping was no longer happening and the land was either abandoned or turned over to grazing Like western NSW I observed a number of goat herds in this area. I assume, perhaps incorrectly, that they were feral

On making my way back to Hawker I decided to fill up with fuel. Inside the shop there was a rather large poster photo of what looked an interesting landscape I was advised that it was Wilpena Pound

Pichi Richi Railway

I was further advised that it was only 60 kms away and the road was sealed all the way So, I decided to take the drive On arriving at Wilpena Resort I made my way to the resort enquiry desk I was advised there were only two ways to view Wilpena Pound Firstly, from the air or by hiking from the resort It is not a long hike, about 1 5 kms each way But it was a very hot day with the temperature over 40 degrees and I was wearing shorts. There was no way I was going hiking dressed in shorts on such a hot day with snakes around Please forgive me for my being a sufferer of ophiophobia I once explained to a psychologist that I thought it was a healthy respect. She did not agree with me

The road from Hawker to Wilpena is in reasonable condition and you will have no trouble with a two wheel drive vehicle It has interesting scenery and is part of Gum Creek Country It is so named as the only location that you will find gum trees is along the banks of the many creeks that cross the area All the creeks were dry Very dry But there is plenty of evidence to indicate that when they flow, they do so with some gusto

On getting back to Hawker I took a stroll around town Like Quorn it was easy to identify that you were not in Pitt St or on St Kilda Rd The walk revealed several businesses The Flinders Food Co and The Ghan Café, both of which were yet to reopen from the summer break. The BP Truck Stop did sell food, but only of the type that my doctor constantly warns me about There was also a very empty caravan park but the most interesting place appeared to be the local Post Office, which also acted as a bottle shop, mini-mart and coffee shop But being Sunday afternoon, it was not doing any trade

It appeared that the only place open to purchase a proper meal was the hotel But I may have been generous calling it proper food I ordered the butter fish with salad and no chips The fish was OK, but nothing exciting The serving of salad was rather small and over half the plate was left empty as it was not covered with chips Indeed, perhaps the dish was best described as being a plate of chips with a side serve of salad and fish. Without the chips, of course Still, it was a feed, and finding something suitable to eat during the day had proved to be a challenge

To be continued

Until next month, happy travels.

Gum Creek Country

Book Review

TThis book was very well received by the entire book club.

The book’s main characters are Derek, his daughter Debbie, his ex-wife Lorraine and a number of Derek’s fellow prisoners

Derek has been incarcerated for embezzling a golf club His daughter is getting married and he obviously cannot attend due to his current circumstances And his ex-wife is doing her best to keep Derek alienated from their daughter.

Derek has a strong desire, perhaps even an obsession, to somehow have his presence at the wedding He decides that he will use the prison sewing club to help him design and make Debbie’s wedding dress As you can imagine not all things go to plan

Whilst the book is very enjoyable it does not have the depth to make it a serious bit of literature It is very light and should be read as some form of entertainment It is a very easy read, and is written in a quirky style that will keep you amused It is a book that will give you somewhere to go when you have to stay where you are

Until next month, happy reading

Morris Wines’ new look

A recent visit to Morris Wines' recent renovation was more than impressive! A new white post and rail fence lining the long driveway in, planted along with trees will be stunning once they mature

The oversized gate with huge solid timber posts and the Morris logo is an incredible way to approach the grounds The new planter boxes, landscaping and wine garden are perfect for a function or event

Inside the cellar door has been completely transformed, providing a warm and relaxing atmosphere

The entrance way greets you with a spectacular chandelier and a 1925 vintage truck

The cellar door still has tastings of all our favourites, alongside a fantastic lunch menu. A wood fireplace surrounded by tan Chesterfield lounges is inviting and comfortable

The walls of the space are lined with Morris Wine history, products and some fantasic merchandise

The Casella family, who purchased the winery in 2016 have certainly done the Morris family justice by modernising the brand and presenting a function venue that will no doubt become very desirable

If you have not yet visited since the $15 million renovation, you need to add it to your list as soon as possible

Church Chat

ST BRIGIDS CATHOLIC CHURCH NEWS

Mass at ST BRIGID’S is at 6pm on Saturdays.

ST THOMAS ANGLICAN CHURCH NEWS

We are looking forward to the arrival and ministry of our new priest Father Scott Dulley in mid August

Texas Governor, Greg Abbott has signed a bill to require all public schools to display the 10 commandments in their classrooms

A quote from a previous priest, Rev. Rex Everett, tells us that God knows best, and as soon as we start to think that we are wiser than God, then we have begun the journey down the wrong path

As individuals, as a family, as a nation, and as a world, we need the wisdom and direction of God

The 10 commandments are old - very old - but still good They are a wise foundation for our lives and our nation today.

Thank you to those who have been supporting our 'fridge' by donating long-life groceries through the basket at IGA

All are welcome to attend services at 8am every Sunday.

ST ANDREW ' S UNITING CHURCH NEWS

Mary Miles was the guest speaker at the Uniting church.

Mary spoke about the Rich Young, Ruler in Mark 10: 17-27 The question that the young man asked was a familiar question that we even ask today He asked Jesus, ‘What do I need to inherit eternal life?”

Basically, after some discussion with Jesus, the young man walked away from Jesus They had a discussion about being good and keeping the commandments, which the young man said, I am good, I follow the commandments. However, the main commandment, to love God with all your heart and not have strange Gods before me was something the young man was not prepared to do The young man decided not to follow Jesus Today in 2025, many people are good and do good deeds, but unless they follow Jesus as their Lord and Saviour they will not inherit the Kingdom of God Basically, that was the message to the young man

On a fun note, a Card and Casserole lunch will be held on Monday the 15 of September. th

Time: 1030

The Howlong Historical Society was thrilled to be invited to attend the Community Pharmacy today to be presented with funds made possible by the actions of the pharmacy and people of Howlong The pharmacy, whose actions in their promotion of various community groups in the town saw people nominate the Historical Society as a group worthy of support is to be thanked publicly and commended for their care and understanding of the entire community

The funds raised will go a long way to ensuring that several of the maps held by the Historical Society can be safely restored and maintained We are delighted to have been the recipient of these funds

Mix n’ Mingle success!

Regional car Events: Young Horsepower Show, Young NSW - 21 Sept 2025

The first Mix n’ Mingle gathering was a success, bringing out a wonderful group of locals for a much needed coffee and chat

Held on Tuesday 22 July at the Howlong Golf Resort, there will be another one soon.

We are attempting to help people who find it difficult to leave their place of residence, or are reluctant, to meet with others in a similar situation

For those requiring transport the Howlong Golf Resort has generously donated use of the courtesy bus to pick up those people

The coffee will be provided free of charge For those that wish to stay for lunch, or other activities, they are welcome to do so The latter will be at the individual’s own cost
