I’d like to thank the Community Emergency Response Team for their care after I tripped and fell when walking in Hoddle Street on Easter Saturday, breaking and dislocating my wrist
Unfortunately, I don’t know the names of the two ladies who attended; however, I was very grateful for their care and reassurance, which was very much appreciated.

Dial 000
Community Emergency Response Team (known as CERT)
Howlong’s CERT is only for 000 emergencies, not general medical needs
The only way to contact them when you require urgent medical attention is to dial 000 and your call will be directed to Howlong’s CERT
When the Howlong CERT receive a callout, a NSW Ambulance will also be ordered, and the CERT will stay in close contact as it travels to the required address.
The only time our CERT will not be sent is if they are off duty due to their heavy workload or personal illness The highest priority is the health and well-being of our volunteers at all times. In this case, a NSW Ambulance will be sent
You will see the Howlong CERT vehicle about town As the CERT share the responsibility when on duty, it is always housed in Howlong so they can quickly get to anyone in urgent need of medical attention

Winter Skincare: Keep Your Glow When the Temperature Drops
When winter rolls around, it brings with it cozy sweaters, hot drinks, and dry, tight skin Cold air and low humidity outside, combined with heaters blasting indoors, can strip your skin of its natural moisture barrier But with a few thoughtful changes to your routine, you can keep your skin happy, hydrated, and glowing even on the coldest days
Hydration is your best friend. Your skin needs help to stay moisturized in drier months, so opt for a richer, cream-based moisturizer instead of lightweight lotions Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin are winter skin superheroes they help lock in moisture and repair your skin barrier
Gentle cleansing is key Harsh cleansers can make dry skin worse Choose a mild, hydrating cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight And while a hot shower may feel like heaven, try to keep the water lukewarm hot water strips oils from your skin even faster
Don’t ditch the sunscreen. Even when it’s grey and chilly, UV rays can still reach your skin, especially if you ' re around reflective surfaces like snow or water A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is still essential every morning
Exfoliate just enough Sloughing off dead skin helps your moisturizer absorb better, but overdoing it can cause irritation. Aim for once or twice a week with a gentle exfoliant no harsh scrubs needed.
Love your lips and hands These areas are especially vulnerable in winter, so keep a nourishing lip balm and thick hand cream within reach Reapply throughout the day, especially after washing
Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of indoor humidity Running a humidifier while you sleep can do wonders for your skin overnight And of course, drinking plenty of water helps hydrate from the inside out.
With a few simple swaps and some added TLC, your winter skincare routine can keep you comfortable and glowing all season Your skin’s working hard to protect you from the elements give it a little love back Pop in and see our friendly staff to review/update your winter skincare regimen.
OMISS ADVENTURES MISADVENTURES
n leaving Morgan it was time to make my way to my next destination
Carrieton A distance of just over 300kms
I suspected it was going to be a pretty lazy day And to a large degree it was
As I travelled the Goyder Highway I wondered why it was so named. It turns out to have an interesting story behind it As a marker on the side of the road explains it was named after Edward Goyder. He was Surveyor General of SA in 1865 when he carried out extensive expeditions throughout the colony The objective was to find which lands were considered arable and those that were only suited to grazing It is claimed that he travelled over 3,500 kms and made his observations by observing what type of vegetation grew in each location The line extends from near Ceduna to the border with Victoria.
The years from 1867 to 1875 produced above average rainfalls and the Goyder line was largely disregarded and discredited However, history proved Goyder right and is now largely accepted as being a very reliable guide to where to plant and not to plant crops
As I travelled up the highway I was taken by the sparse population I came across a large and sprawling wind farm I wondered why they would put a wind farm in a location which seemed to have very little need of electricity Truly there was very little there
I moved on and shortly afterwards came across a sign pointing to a place named Burra There was no indication of distance or why I should want to go there However, a friend had suggested I should visit Burra should I get a chance Time was on my side so I did a detour. In fact, it was less than 5kms I took a short walk around the streets and dropped into the St Just Café for a bite of lunch It was pleasant enough without being exciting I found the place more than interesting and made a mental note to revisit the place before I shuffle off this mortal coil. However, it wouldn’t be this trip Or would it?
AI continued on my way and as I passed Terowie I decided to drop in and see if things had improved since I was last there They have not What was once an important railway town with over 3,000 people is now almost deserted It also has a place in Australian history as the location of where General Douglas MacArthur made his much reported “I shall return” speech
Another place of some interest is the Imperial Hotel It is in better condition than most of the other buildings in town. However, it appears to have been abandoned a long time ago, but a couple of the rooms appear to be occupied Possibly by squatters
Inside Carrieton phone box
If you have any interest in Australian history, you can do a whole lot worse than drop into Terowie if you should be over that way I moved onto Carrieton, going through Peterborough Mostly to purchase lunch and to fill up with fuel Once you hit the Flinders Ranges the price of fuel skyrockets and is best to get there with as much fuel in the tank as is feasible
On arriving at Carrieton, I found myself at a town with very few signs of life I found my way to the caravan park I was offered the choice of a powered site on the gravel or an unpowered site on the grass I chose the powered site. That was a mistake. I permanently damaged more than one tent peg as I setup the camper trailer Overall, the park was adequate, but hardly exciting. I walked the streets but everything was closed Including the Carrieton Hotel As I had been prewarned, it was the wrong time of year to visit the Flinders. The Flinders basically closes down from the start of December until the start of March And some places even longer
One thing in Carrieton that did catch my eye was an old Telecom red phone box Now that phone calls are free from public phone boxes in Australia, I decided it would be fun to make a call I opened the door and quickly changed my mind I have just never used a phone of that type in my life I suspect the phone box predated Telecom and was in fact a PMG phone box But you have to have a bit of age on you to remember that. After a rather uneventful night at Carrieton it was time to move onto Hawker But that is a story for another day
Until next month, happy travels

Book Review
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
This is another interesting book But this time it is a classic of English Literature
It is a highly rated piece of literature And despite being first published in 1847 it is still highly regarded today
The book tells the story of Jane Eyre The book begins with her being orphaned and then unwanted by relatives She ends up in a boarding school and several incidents happen there that will influence her life decisions The book continues to follow Jane through her life with its many trials and tribulations
To my mind, the plot of the book is not important The value of the book lies in the reflections that the book reveals about society at that time
Her experiences at the school, Lowood, are both reflective of Charles Dickens, namely Oliver Twist, and 1984 by George Orwell The masters believe that the harsh conditions they impose on those of lower status are both necessary and for their good. However, they do not live their lives by the standards they impose on others
In other ways the book reflects values shared by George Elliot and Thomas Hardy in the way that women were both treated and valued by society at the time
It is rather wordy, but the word pictures are very memorable
The drawbacks to the book include the use of words that are rarely seen these days. Words like confabulate, which basically means to discuss something with someone, while the word confabulation these days has a very narrow meaning and is rarely used outside the field of psychiatry
It is also rather lengthy at 500 pages
Overall, I have no doubt the book will long be remembered and treasured It is a book well worth adding to your library
On another note, the ABC recently aired a series on Jane Austen It is very interesting and if you too are interested you can watch it on iview
Until next month, happy reading

ST BRIGIDS CATHOLIC CHURCH NEWS
June was a big month in Saint Brigid's Parish For Catholics, June is celebrated as the "Month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus". This devotion celebrates the love of God expressed in a human heart, as in Jesus, God took on a human nature
The love of God was also celebrated in the recent Feast of "Corpus Christi", which refers to the Eucharist In this celebration we affirm that the God we worship loved us so profoundly that He gave His only Son; so intimately, that that Son took flesh and dwelt among us; so totally, He gave up His life for us and for our salvation, foretelling and memorialising this by giving His Body and Blood to us in the Eucharist. So, gathering for Mass was the high point of our celebrations, as the Eucharist marks the source and summit of the Christian life
Although it has been very cold in June, we've had many highs in our church calendar this month and the fires of faith have been burning bright in St Brigid's Parish In church it's been more like 'Spring' Which reminds me of a joke:
When is it impossible to plant spring flowers? When you haven't botany
Big thanks to Hazel for the Church flowers! God bless, Fr Peter Mass at ST BRIGID’S is at 6pm on Saturdays.
ST THOMAS ' ANGLICAN CHURCH NEWS
During June, we have been reflecting on Pentecost and the Trinity. It has been recorded that the early Christians, on leaving time spent together at their meetings, would chant together in unison the benediction: "Father bless us as we go, Jesus walk beside us, Holy Spirit guide us."
We are praying for Father Scott Dulley as he prepares to move to our Parish from East Maitland A joke from the pew sheet - Teacher: Give me a sentence that includes the words, Defence, Defeat, Detail
Charlie - When a horse jumps, defence, defeat go first and then detail All are welcome to attend services at 8am every Sunday.
ST ANDREW ' S UNITING CHURCH NEWS
Graham Brown from Corowa was the guest speaker at the Uniting church in June, celebrating the birthday of the church, Pentecost
The receiving of the Holy Spirit This happened 50 days after the celebration of the Passover Graham opened with a prayer of thanksgiving for the Holy Spirit, for creation, for Jesus being raised from the dead, and ourselves being offered life in all its fullness
He said in rough and uncharted times we would depend on Gods grace and stay close to Him in humility and hope and that, because of the coming of the Holy Spirit we would have wisdom, love and blessing. That we would be instruments of God’s peace in these troubled times
Bible readings were John 15: vs 4-16 and Acts 2 vs 1-21.
Just as there was amazing new life in lake Ayer, when, after a dry season it filled up with water, the characteristic of the Holy Spirit was amazing power and new life for all who believed in Jesus Services are at 9.30am on 2nd and 4th Sundays. Howlong Then & Now
I recently took a call from a young man called Kody Everitt who was looking for information about ancestors Glenn and Thomas one of which had been involved with the 100 mile race
I made contact with members of the Historical Society who informed me that a Jim Everitt, who is a member of the local RSL, owned the property at Brockelsby where the two planes landed in an interesting manner On advising Kody of this, he was quite astonished as that incident was not one of which he was aware
I was able to get Kody in contact with Jim where they had some good conversations
I was also able to make contact with the incredible Nyree Wiggins who has provided us, and Kody, with a feast of information regarding the Everitts Tina Baker from Federation Council was also able to provide a photograph of a grave in Howlong Cemetery of one of the family
I was then able to get Kody in direct contact with Nyree to learn a whole lot more about a fairly incredible history of this family
As I am preparing this article, I await another call from Kody who by this time would have learned so much more Kody’s direct relations moved from the Howlong area to a small place called Lang Lang which is I Victoria Hopefully, he will one day have the time to physically visit Howlong and its environs
He has a young son to whom he will be able to give so much details about his ancestors.
It has been a fascinating journey for Kody and one I have been delighted to have been able to ensure that he learns so much more
We are very fortunate here in the Historical Society to have members who know people from the families we are seeking to research and are willing to go the extra mile to pass on their knowledge I wish Kody all the very best in his quest to know more

Modern society delivers many challenges. Especially for those who have few opportunities to socialise. No matter which books or articles you read there are four recurring themes that prove key to living a rewarding, happy and long life
The first is diet
The second is exercise
The third is purpose.
And the fourth is social connections
We are attempting to help people who find it difficult to leave their place of residence, or are reluctant, to meet with others in a similar situation A coffee and chat has been organised for Tuesday, 22 July at the Howlong Golf Resort, starting at 10:30am nd
For those requiring transport the Howlong Golf Resort has generously donated use of the courtesy bus to pick up those people
The coffee will be provided free of charge For those that wish to stay for lunch, or other activities, they are welcome to do so The latter will be at the individual’s own cost
If you know of anyone who would like to, or should use this service, please encourage them to do so
If you require transport, please ring the Howlong Golf Resort on 02 6026 5321 and speak to reception If the event proves to be successful, we intend to run it on a regular basis. We look forward to seeing you there!
