Community Emergency Response Team (known as CERT)
Howlong’s CERT is only for 000 emergencies, not general medical needs
The only way to contact them when you require urgent medical attention is to dial 000 and your call will be directed to Howlong’s CERT
When the Howlong CERT receive a callout, a NSW Ambulance will also be ordered, and the CERT will stay in close contact as it travels to the required address
The only time our CERT will not be sent is if they are off duty due to their heavy workload or personal illness The highest priority is the health and well-being of our volunteers at all times In this case, a NSW Ambulance will be sent
You will see the Howlong CERT vehicle about town As the CERT share the responsibility when on duty, it is always housed in Howlong so they can quickly get to anyone in urgent need of medical attention

Howlong Pharmacy Health Advice
"Reflux: When Your Stomach Throws a Party and Your Oesophagus Isn't Invited!"
Imagine your stomach throwing a wild bash, complete with all the acidic drinks and spicy snacks, but your oesophagus is left out in the cold, dealing with the aftermath. Reflux is something most of us have experienced at one point or another. Reflux occurs when stomach acid or bile moves back up into the oesophagus causing discomfort.
While occasional reflux is normal and happens to many people after eating certain foods, frequent reflux could indicate a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD). GORD is a more chronic form of reflux that requires treatment to avoid potential complications
What Causes Reflux?
Overeating: Consuming large meals can put pressure on the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES), causing it to relax and allow stomach contents to flow back up
Certain foods and drinks: Spicy foods, citrus fruits, coffee, alcohol, caffeinated drinks and greasy or fatty foods can irritate the stomach lining and LES
Lying down after eating
Stress
Symptoms of Reflux
- Heartburn, a burning sensation in your chest that often occurs after eating.
- A sour or bitter taste in the mouth
- Regurgitation (food or liquid coming back up into your throat)
- A feeling of a lump in the throat
- Persistent cough or hoarseness, especially in the morning
- Difficulty swallowing
Practical Tips to Manage Reflux
1 Eat smaller, more frequent meals
2 Avoid trigger foods and drinks: Cutting back on these may help reduce symptoms
3 Don’t lie down immediately after eating: Try to wait at least 30 minutes to an hour before lying down to give your stomach time to digest
4 Wear loose-fitting clothes: Comfortable, loose clothing can help reduce pressure
5 Elevate the head of your bed: By elevating the head of your bed by 15-20cm it can help prevent stomach acid from flowing back into your oesophagus while you sleep
6 Maintain a healthy weight
7 Manage stress: through relaxation techniques, exercise, or mindfulness
8 Medications: Over-the-counter antacids can help and manage reflux symptoms
When to See a Doctor - Occasional reflux is generally not a cause for concern. However, if you experience reflux symptoms more than twice a week, or if the symptoms are severe, it may be time to see a doctor. Your doctor can help determine the cause of your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatments In some cases, prescription medications or lifestyle changes may be necessary to manage reflux effectively
AMISS ADVENTURES MISADVENTURES
fter my incomplete sojourn to the Flinders Ranges in 2023 I decided to give it a second go
I set out at the end of February 2025 I was advised that this was a poor time of year to make such a journey. Little did I know how prophetic this advice would be
For the initial part of the journey, I decided to travel through Wakool For no other reason than I have never been there I found Wakool to be a clean and tidy town There appear to be only two functioning businesses in the town A post office that serves lunch from 12:00 to 2:00pm and a pub which had not yet opened. It was well after 2:00pm so it was around to the local park for a cold chicken sandwich which I had brought with me. The park reflected the town in cleanliness and tidiness, but there is little else to boast about
I moved on through Moulamein, Tooleybuc, Manangatang and onto Ouyen I was booked into the Ouyen Caravan Park It was close to dark when I arrived and I could find no-one to assist me So I just set up the camper and proceeded as normal. I was eventually approached by the owner, who asked for $20 for the night’s stay The price was the only redeeming feature of the park
In the morning it was time to make tracks for Morgan in South Australia. One placed I stopped at was Murrayville On the edge of town there is a collection of army tanks in various states of disrepair I hope this is not the Australian Defence Force at work I stopped at the Cobb & Co Café and purchased a coffee The coffee was pleasant enough which was in contrast with the personality of the person who served me I then moved onto the Murrayville Store The shop was in the last days of trading. I had a chat to the owner who told me that she just wanted to slow down after having had the store for twelve years She said the locals didn’t support her that well I asked where did the locals do their shopping and I was advised either at Loxton, 130kms away or Mildura 210kms away I guess some people are not good at doing their sums With almost everything marked down 30% there were some bargains to be had I stocked up on nonperishable goods. I spotted a steam iron marked at $18.
My current steam iron had cost me $25 at Kmart and the steam function was failing Well, more correctly it was leaking the water I purchased the iron and was surprised when I was charged $12 for it I guess it might have been on the shelf for some time It is an amount I can afford to risk However, with finding something suitable to eat proving to be a challenge I moved on
In the middle of nowhere I stumbled across a small town named Paruna. It had one functioning business A coffee shop, with a few grocery type items, pies and pasties and the like It also had a bar and tavern attached which apparently does a roaring trade on Saturday nights However, it was not Saturday night and I didn’t want to eat a pie or pastie so I ordered a coffee and moved on Sadly, the coffee was a disappointing brew and I cannot recommend stopping at Paruna.
Paruna street art
By the time I reached Loxton I was famished At least by Australian standards Again, finding something that pleased both my palate and my doctor was proving difficult I finally stumbled upon an OTR outlet and was pleased to find a Caeser salad with chicken for a respectable $12. Some might say the meal was a little on the small size, but in reality, it was probably right sized.
Loxton seemed to be a prosperous town and might be worth further investigation at a future date Time was not my friend on this particular day So, I moved on
My next stop was to be Morgan, on the banks of the Murray River It must be close to the most northern point of the Murray River. It takes a very sharp left at Morgan before heading almost directly south down to Lake Alexandrina
I was booked in to stay at the Morgan Caravan Park I must admit that the people at the park were very pleasant to deal with on the phone when I made the booking And they were very pleasant to deal with when I arrived I would have no hesitation in staying there again
It had been a hot setting up the cam the fan to circulate swimmers and ma pool I stayed ther and the weather h used the camp k dinner. While havi couple struck up a too had spent the Ouyen, though establishment to m were not unlike m never to stay at Ou
It had been a long in my camper and soundly Suddenly three very loud, creature making its animal had just creature’s late-nigh cruel.
In the morning it onto my next stop unknown Carrieton
That is next month’ Until then, happy tr
Book Review
Days without end by Sebastian Barry
This book is one of the most interesting books that the book club has read in recent times
The book’s main two characters are Thomas McNulty and John Cole They escape to Canada from the Irish potato famine They then travel to the USA and get involved in a number of events of USA history including the Indian Wars and the American Civil War
It is hard to believe that a single person could be involved in so many events in one ’ s lifetime However, I can believe that each event could conceivably have happened and I believe the book is a number of separate stories melded into one book Having said that the book is not a history book, but rather a work of fiction
For a number of different reasons some, may be even many, people will find it a difficult read First the language is a little confusing I suspect that the author tried to make the spoken quotes sound as they would have in the day That is the mid nineteenth century The use of double negatives was not infrequent And many of the words are not in common use today Some examples include bifurcation, spavined and svelte If you are going to read this book you might need a bigger dictionary
I found a number of expressions original or not commonly used For example ,”Two weeks Starling Carlton would wear out St Paul” and “ the major doesn’t like him and I’d say even his mother found it hard”
Others will be most uncomfortable with some of the descriptions of various massacres Both of the American Indians and black prisoners of war And what was done with some of the dismembered parts of the victims is truly hard to put out of mind
And others will be offended by the frequent taking of the Lord’s name in vain
The book is one of the most original and interesting books I, and we at book club, have read But it will not be to everyone ’ s taste
Until next month, happy reading

Growing Australian Natives
In general, natives prefer well-drained soils You may need to add sand to your soil
Group plants needing similar growing conditions
Use mulches to keep soil cool and moist
Prune lightly after flowering to encourage more growth
Autumn is generally the best time to plant as it gives the plant time to establish before the next summer.
Contact your local landcare group for information on plants that grow in your area.
Plants native to the Howlong region:

ST ANDREW ' S UNITING CHURCH NEWS
A happy time of fellowship was enjoyed at St Andrews Uniting church in May It was good to get acquainted with new comers to Howlong, Denise and Dennis
On this happy occasion, Rev David Sloane, from Corowa, conducted the service Being Mothers’ Day, we began by singing, “Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices, who wondrous things has done, in whom the world rejoices; who from our mothers’ arms has blessed us on our way, with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today”
David prayed for Mothers, Grandmothers, families, harmony in the home – unconditional love, a reflection of God’s love Also remembered were the sick and dying, and those bereaved; refugees and traumatised people; a cessation of anger and violence in India and Pakistan The new Pope Leo 14 , that God would guide him to bring peace and harmony to our world; that new politicians elected would act wisely and justly; that God would be with each of us throughout the coming week. th

Remember - Our Historical Society is always interested in any old local artefacts you may find!
I am constantly amazed at the amount of material out in the community that can be hidden away in various homes and cubby holes
Just recently, a resident of Howlong contacted me and said she had found a large volume of old Border Mail newspapers which were safely stored in the cellar of a previous home
I was delighted to hear from her as she is a well known identity in the town and the Howlong P&C Myself and Denise Butcher from the Historical Society collected them and placed them carefully in the Archive Room. There will be several members of the Society who will get together and go through these papers, some of which go back almost a century Bound to be some interesting information in these old papers. It demonstrates how important these historical items can be
We will keep you all posted through the pages of the Grapevine of the contents of the hoard. Please, if you find anything which may be of interest, don’t throw it out, bring it to us and we will go through it all and see what we can find.

Howlong Croquet Club Celebrating 10 years!
On the 3 of May Howlong Croquet celebrated 10 years since officially becoming a Croquet Club We had visitors from other clubs, original members returned and our club members who helped to make this a special day
Our club captain Alan Hunter did a great job setting up an obstacle course, where you had to run hoops after going through things like goat’s horns, pipes and even a cat scratcher. Lots of laughter and frustration. A Gateball court was set for those who wanted to try a new game. I think we may have found one new player for the game.
At morning tea we gave thanks to Sarina Cevaal-Hewitt who came with Graeme Gallus and others to show us croquet and then negotiated with the Howlong Golf Resort to allow us to play first on the driving range and then to give us 2 courts for playing
We also thanked the Golf Resort and all the many members over the 10 years who worked hard to get the 3 courts and other facilities that are now Howlong croquet
After play we adjourned to the Golf Club for lunch together
Sarina & 3 original members
10 anniversary cake th Celebrating on the courts
On the 22 and 23 May was again competed against Wagga Wagga for the Howlong Wagga Shield. nd rd
Although it had been wet overnight, we made it through day 1 with Wagga Wagga well n front in games and hoops. Friday morning was very wet, and we wondered if we could even begin. The rain eased as it grew close to starting time and by the time began the rain had stopped so we in the end we had 2 full days of croquet
At the end of the 2 days the scores were: Wagga Wagga 29 games 292 hoops, Howlong 19 games 240 hoops Congratulations to Wagga Wagga Thank you to all our members for their hard work and to the Waaga members for their friendly and supportive play
On the 1 Saturday of each month, we are inviting anyone who wishes to try Croquet to visit the club
We have 3 coaches who will show you how to use the mallet, run hoops and play the game
