Shelley Luther spoke out Saturday against Sherman ISD mask mandate on the Grayson County Courthouse steps Shelley Luther drew fame for being arrested a year ago in defiance of the shutdown order from Texas Governor Greg Abbott. She has since become the folk hero for “strict-constitutionalists” around North Texas. She was in Sherman Saturday to speak on the courthouse steps against the Sherman ISD mask mandate imposed last week and had some harsh words to say about the governmental overreach. She said her and her husband traveled to Austin to plead with the Texas Legislature about masking children and what schools are psychologically doing to kids. She said her 11-year-old stepson no longer smiles and makes excuses to not go to school. Luther says he has severe depression. Upon telling the legislature the story of her son, she received surprising support from a Democrat lawmaker whose son had just committed suicide. “This year there’s an optional mask mandate and the kid is totally different now,” said Luther. “He comes home and is blabbing about school all the time. He loves school. He said, ‘we actually get to sit next to our friends at lunch.’”

Luther said that the government is using people’s kids to get to control the parents. “You must stand up,” said Luther. “If you don’t, your kids are going to think it’s okay for someone to tell them to wear a mask somewhere and they should just do it. If you don’t stand up and you don’t cause a stink—you’re the problem. You must do it.” The former 13-year schoolteacher then blasted the teachings of Critical Race Theory. She said she got out of teaching because she saw where things were headed such as her not being allowed to tell the students to stand for the flag. “The world is upside down and the only way to stop it is you,” said Luther. “Sherman ISD School Board has got to go. They were voted in—you vote them out. They don’t get a second chance on this one. They need to go.” She then challenged the crowd to show which ones were running for school board. “If it’s not you—then who? It’s you,” said Luther. “God says you must act now without fear. These kids are counting on you.”
