Shephard given warm Bulldogs fall short in opener, show retirement sendoff big improvements from a year ago Howe Bulldogs from City of Howe The opened the season FriHowe Middle is hosting their annual First Responder Cookout Friday, September 10 11:30am to 1pm. HMS Student Council will be serving First Responders hamburgers, hotdogs, sides and drinks. First Responders may park in the gym parking lot and enter through the cafeteria. ***** We are now on a fullscale Austin Haley career passing watch. With his 254 yards on Friday night, he now needs just 245 to pass Rick Hanning and move into 4th all-time in Howe history. Five more touchdown passes would also move him past Hanning into third all-time in that category. For those wondering, Chase Fountain ranks first in passing yards with 3,749 and Jay Skipworth is first in touchdown passes with 39. Haley, a junior, could own them all when he’s done. ***** You’re about to find out why your Grandmother canned food. Outgoing Howe City Administrator Joe Shephard and wife Sandra. Staff photo. Joe Shephard was hired by the City of Howe back in November 2009 and has served as city administrator since. He decided earlier in the summer that he would be retiring this fall and that time has now ap-

proached for him to get on his Harley and ride off into the sunset. On Friday, August 20, the City of Howe staff threw a retirement party for him at Sum-

day night with new turf, new tunnel, and new offensive philosophy of letting the ball fly out of 3-year starting quarterback Austin Haley’s right hand. Howe, coming off its first ever 0-10 season, looked light years ahead of where they were a year ago in the opening game at Callisburg. In the end, Callisburg took the 35 -21 win, but the Bulldogs had a wellexecuted game plan on both sides of the ball, played virtually penalty free, and showed their home crowd that the Howe Bulldogs appear to be a team to be reckoned

Howe quarterback Austin Haley threw for 254 yards and a touchdown in Howe’s 35-21 loss to Callisburg. It’s the most passing yards for any Bulldogs quarterback in a season opener. Photo by Michelle Carney.

tax rate for sixth straight year On Tuesday morning, the Grayson County Commissioners lowered the tax rate on a unanimous vote. The tax rate has been lowered for the sixthstraight year and this year’s rate will go from $0.3767 per $100 valuation to $0.3390. The growth in the county has allowed the commissioners to be able to lower the

rate while still maintaining the same level of project services and personnel management or even beyond previous years. One case in point is the addition a position in planning and development and three fulltime employees in the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office. "Every one of those (new positions) is directly related to our
