INSIDE OUT DORSET

The ideas and voices of children from a Bournemouth primary school are to feature in a new sound art installation at a major Dorset visitor attraction this summer.

Dorset-based artist Lorna Rees, of Gobbledegook Theatre, is creating her latest immersive sound-work, Canopy, for this year’s Inside Out Dorset festival of outdoor arts, which runs in various locations across the county from 12 to 21 September.

A joyful, thought-provoking investigation of our relationship to trees, Canopy will see 24 sonic seed pods suspended from trees on a trail at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest at Ashley Heath. Each seed pod will house one of 24 different human responses to Nature with contributions from a range of people including scientists, artists, folk musicians, arborists and Year 4 children from Malmesbury Park Primary School.

Canopy can be seen and listened to at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest from Saturday 13 September until Sunday 21 September. It is supported by Activate for Inside Out Dorset, Arts Council England, Forestry England, Dorset Council, Cultural Hub and the National

Memorial Arboretum. Lorna’s workshop with Malmesbury Park Primary School was enabled by the Cultural Hub. She also hosted workshops at Christchurch Junior School, St Katharine’s CE Primary School in Southbourne, and St Ives Primary School.

Inside Out Dorset is an international festival of free-to-see outdoor arts held every two years. This year’s typically diverse and inventive programme also includes a new Giant for the Dorset landscape, the county’s response to the international River of Hope arts-based learning project, four astonishing performance pieces from the Catalan region in one of Dorset’s most iconic villages, and an amazing, site specific promenade performance against the backdrop of a Georgian seafront.

FIRST SPADE IN THE GROUND FOR MAYFLOWER’S NEW REHEARSAL STUDIO

Construction work is now officially underway on Mayflower’s new rehearsal studio development, marking a significant milestone in Mayflower’s ongoing investment in regeneration for the next generation as part of their mission to create inspiring experiences.

Following the planning approval earlier this year, the recent ceremonial breaking of the ground symbolises the next step in delivering a double-height rehearsal studio, plus two fully accessible dressing rooms and a combined reception and stage door. The project will provide a high-performing building as part of a drive towards achieving Net Zero and will provide a suitable space for their Participation and Education programmes to thrive.

The rehearsal studio space will deliver improvements and support Mayflower’s continued growth in participation, Mayflower is celebrating its twelfth year of its highly successful youth theatre projects welcoming over 210,000 young people from across the region to experience creative arts

performance, making friends and growing in confidence as they take to the main stage. One benefit of this rehearsal studio is that young people will be able to utilise it during the youth projects each year. The rehearsal studio will sit alongside two fully accessible dressing rooms and a new combined reception and stage door, helping to improve backstage access and inclusivity for all performers, ensuring disabled performers have equality of backstage provision with stage accessible dressing rooms – a longstanding priority for the venue.

The building project, which is expected to take approximately 16 months to complete, will be delivered by contractors GF Holding, following a competitive tender process. The development reflects Mayflower Theatre’s long-term commitment to reinvestment and sustainability, with the entire project being fully funded through Mayflower’s own reserves.

MERMAID TAILS FIND NEW HARBOURSIDE HOME ‘THE MOST EXPENSIVE HOUSE IN THE WORLD’

Three striking mermaid tails from this spring’s Great Tail Trail are creating a breathtaking public spectacle at their new harbourfront home at Sandbanks, having raised a significant amount at auction for Julia’s House children’s hospice charity.

The tails have been bought by local entrepreneur and family man, Tom Glanfield, who made headlines in 2023 for purchasing a dilapidated bungalow dubbed ‘the most expensive house in the world’ due to the staggering price per square foot he paid for it. Tom, who purchased the rundown property on Sandbanks’ ‘Millionaire’s Row’ and hopes to replace it with a very publicly supported family eco home, has given the mermaid tails pride of place on his harbour wall overlooking the water.

The Great Tail Trail took place across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole between April and June this year, providing a free family art adventure and lots of community spirit. All the tails were sold at a Grand Auction which raised an impressive £201,100, helping Julia’s House to continue to provide its essential care and support to local children and their families.

Renters rights bill update

The Renters Rights bill will not be going to Royal Assent until they are back from summer recess in September.

One amendment to the bill that has been withdrawn is to allow landlords to be exempt from joining the new ombudsman if their agent is already with a redress scheme. Therefore, landlords will be required to be part of it.

A positive amendment that has been agreed is the Pet Deposit, landlords can request up to 3 weeks rent as an additional deposit, however, this must only be for pet damage.

Another positive amendment is the reletting of a home if possession was gained by using the Ground 1a of the Section 8 to sell the property. Originally it was looking at banning a landlord from reletting the property for 12 months, this has now been reduced to 6 months.

FIRST TIME BUYERS NEW INITIATIVE

The Chancellor announced a couple of headlines during July to help first time buyers get on the property market.

The first was to increase the income criteria, generally 4 times annual income to 4.5 times annual income.

The second was for tenants to be able to use their rental payments to show they pay their rent on time and they could afford the mortgage repayments.

The latter I have been advocate for many years, it seems absolutely daft to commit to a payment plan of a large rent and for this not be part of your credit check. A win-win for tenants and landlords.

BANK OF ENGLAND BASE RATE CUT?

It is being widely predicted that the Bank Of England will be looking to reduce the rate during August, if the job market shows signs of slowing down. The effect of the Employers National Insurance increase will be biting into many businesses outgoings and will be having an impact. Let’s hope they do bring the rate down.

£75,000 Fine

A landlord found himself being fined for £75,000 for letting out two flats in North London on Airbnb and Booking.com sites. A neighbour had complained how the short term lets were having a ‘detrimental impact on his life, work and mental health’, due raucous parties, lack of sound proofing and antisocial hours with noisy parties. term lets being The landlord claimed they were long term tenants, however, the holiday sites had shown reviews of the flats. The flats were not allowed to be let as holiday lets, hence the hefty fine.

£10,000 fine

A landlord in Derbyshire found himself in court for the second time within a 12 month period due to not co-operating with the first order and having a Category 1 hazard and six Category 2 hazards. The first fine was for £2,000 but the second fine was for £10,000.

AN OFFER OF ADVICE

We are heading for the major reform in the lettings industry. A good agent will be reading and monitoring and ensuring their clients are safe. It is becoming harder and harder for landlords to self-manage, (unless they consider it their job and regularly attend courses). To be frank, one fine from the council, could easily cost a lot more than if you had engaged an agent to manage the property for multiple years!

At Move On, we can assure you that our knowledge and expertise in being up to date with legislation, means you can have total peace of mind, that you will not fall foul of the law . If you have considered looking for an agent, then give me a ring and I will personally happily chat through any concerns or questions you may have.

How to style the silver trend and make the most of metallics

Time to get your shine on, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

When it comes to precious metals, there’s something special about a silver coating, flick of shimmer and a smooth, silky finish.

And making a statement with silver needn’t be confined to a capsule collection of shimmery homewares – from decorative to functional, think sofas, occasional tables and lighting, setting the tone for a luxe aesthetic.

“Following Milan Design Week 2025, we’ve seen a renewed interest in silver finishes; cool-toned metals that feel both modern and timeless, highlights Helen Pett, brand ambassador at Arteriors. “While brass and bronze have dominated for years, silver is emerging as a fresh alternative that brings a touch of polish and sophistication to a space.”

She says one of the easiest ways to incorporate this finish is through considered accessories. “Adding touches throughout your decor like sculptural silver lamps, sleek-edged mirrors, or metallic tabletop accents that catch the light.”

These pieces don’t overwhelm a scheme, but they do add depth, contrast and a subtle hit of glamour,” says Pett. To make the look feel curated, not clinical, she says to mix silver with tactile materials like marble, ceramic or textured glass.

RIGHT
Emelia Pillow Back Left Hand Facing Arm 3 Seat Corner Sofa, £1,099, DFS | DFS/PA

“The result is layered, luxurious, and completely in tune with the current mood in interiors.”

Mara Rypacek Miller, founder of Industville, agrees: “Historically, silver has been associated with luxury, craftsmanship, and prestige – from antique silverware and decorative objects to iconic Art Deco interiors.

“Today, metallic finishes continue to be a popular choice, with cooler-toned metals such as silver and pewter favoured for the contemporary elevation they lend to a range of styles.”

Silver and pewter work particularly well in lighting, suggests Miller, where their subtle reflectivity can amplify both natural and artificial light.

“Whether featured in sleek, modern fittings or classic, industrial-inspired designs, these metals help create visual interest without overwhelming a space.”

To nail the look, she says the key to using cooler metallics effectively is balance. “They shine when set against warmer tones or more organic textures – think exposed brick, wood, woven textiles, or natural fibres.

“Even small touches, such as silver-detailed accessories, hardware or silver capped bulbs in lighting, can introduce this look in a subtle, sophisticated way,” says Miller. “It’s a finish that suits a broad spectrum of aesthetics, offering a timeless design statement that complements rather than competes with the room’s character,” she adds.

Moreover, silver is elevating seating and soft furnishings by balancing modernity with sumptuousness…

As Kellie Wyles, head of upholstery at DFS, puts it: “Silver is shedding its reputation as a mere accent in interior design, and is now being used widely in upholstery to transform sofas, armchairs, and more into unapologetically bold centrepieces.”

This reflects the enduring appeal of maximalist style, suggests Wyles, with this latest wave embracing luxurious, attention-grabbing materials.

“Silver is especially impactful when seen in tactile fabrics such as velvet where the pile catches and reflects light, bringing a transformative and dynamic look to otherwise simple silhouettes,” she explains.

Timeless too, Daniel Smith, founder of Danetti, says metallic finishes are redefining luxury with their sleek elegance and versatile appeal.

“Silver chrome evokes a sense of nostalgia infused with a futuristic feel, while becoming an effortlessly versatile choice that enhances existing colour schemes, prints or textures to brighten up a space.

“Sleek silver finishes on chairs or tables offer surfaces that interaction with light, to refresh and provide depth and dimension,” Smith suggests.

In addition, he says they easily complement other metallic accents such as lighting [and accessories]. “And look particularly striking when paired with marble finishes, to create a contemporary and inviting space.”

Getting to the core of the Big Apple in its 400 th year

Four centuries after the city was founded, New York is more vibrant than ever, says Hannah Roberts.

Yellow taxis weave in between rows of twinkling lights and concrete blocks. I tower above them, having grappled with my fear of heights to traverse New York’s fourth-tallest skyscraper. Observing the city from One Vanderbilt’s observation deck 368m from the ground is a kneewobbling introduction to the sheer scale of Manhattan.

In its 400th year, the city is dynamic and vibrant, a cultural melting pot awash with people who hail from across the globe.

First established as New Amsterdam in the 1620s by Dutch colonists, the relatively small settlement grew rapidly during the 18th century following multiple waves of immigration.

Cultural amalgamation has shaped New York, a city comprised of five boroughs all with a unique history and appeal. Its most famous district is Manhattan, an area dotted with historical landmarks of a scale that produce feelings of dizzying awe.

Eager to delve into the past while discovering what the future holds, I’m visiting for a short break.

Waking up in the thick of the action

Jumping onto my hotel bed after a long flight, I turn my eyes to the window and catch a glimpse of the jewel in the crown of the skyline. Once the tallest building in the city, the Empire State Building, renowned for its distinctive art deco facade, is an emblem of New York ambition, a reminder of a time when the city represented luxury, glamour and exuberance.

A highlight of staying at the NH Collection on Madison Avenue is gazing at the remarkable views of the city. Situated in a century-old red-brick building, the hotel is a cosy haven in the heart of the action that charms with its period features and sophisticated decor. Attached to the property is Italian restaurant Serafina, which provides a relaxed setting for a buffet breakfast and a lively dining experience for the evening.

The hotel’s overall design scheme is mid-century modern with little decorative flourishes that transport you back into 1950s New York – including typewriters and historical knick-knacks.

Walking and dining through time

Nearby, the High Line is a walkway that places you at eye-level with the buildings of Manhattan. The space, featuring swathes of greenery, was built on a historic freight rail line abandoned in the 1980s. As I walk through the “park in the sky”, I admire art installations and architecture, at moments catching the scent of flowers or freshly-baked bread from nearby bagel shops.

I then make my way to Chelsea Market, a centre of food and retail in the city’s Meatpacking District. The High Line trains once delivered produce to the wholesale butchers of the area, which are now swathes of pungent eateries, a foodie’s idea of heaven.

Opting for a more luxurious lunch, I dine at the rooftop restaurant at RH New York, another spot that boasts views of the Manhattan skyline. Mixing Mediterraneanstyle cuisine with American touches, the lunch menu offers grilled meats, signature salads and caviar three different ways.

Proof there’s much more to the restaurant scene than chips and burgers, abcV is a plant-based restaurant from Jean-Georges Vongerichten. I visit for the evening, enjoying the clean, white aesthetic and plates of impressive vegetables. Places like this are representative of New York as a whole, welcoming the new while paying tribute to the old, with dishes influenced by the people and places who make the city what it is.

Exploring the neighbourhoods

An area of New York steeped in tradition is the Bronx. The Ramirez brothers, who run the Bronx Beer Hall, are helping to change perceptions of the borough, which was often portrayed as being dangerous in the 1980s and 1990s. Their beer hall in Arthur Avenue Retail Market welcomes both tourists and locals; old men roll cigars at the front of the venue and locals sell deli meats further back.

As the city’s financial district, Manhattan offers a more polished experience compared to the Bronx, but both are equally impressive. In fact, each borough offers something unique. While Queens is known for its international food scene and arty neighbourhoods, Staten Island has a more relaxed feel to it, dressed with green spaces that act as an escape from the throng of the city. There’s also Brooklyn with its trendy coffee shops and historic brownstone buildings that attract Instagram influencers looking for their next best picture.

On my last day in the city, I visit Central Park, an iconic green space that acts as an oasis within the metropolis. I recognise this park from films and TV shows; Friends, Home Alone 2, and Enchanted are just some that come to mind as I sit on a bench and eat a bagel packed to the brim with fillings.

Reflecting on my short stay, I wonder how long it would take for me to explore every brownstone building, skyscraper, bagel shop, museum and park. Wildly different in so many ways, New York also has also carved out a distinctive identity over the years. All too often, fact never lives up to fiction – but New York is just as wonderful as I hoped it would be.

Cool off from the Mediterranean heat with a European mountain break

As the continent continues to sizzle, resorts at higher altitudes offer some refreshing relief, says Sarah Marshall.

Sunshine is an essential ingredient for a successful summer holiday, but there are limits. Over the past few years, temperatures have been steadily rising to unbearable levels making many traditional beach destinations no-go zones during the months of July and August.

Summer 2024 was the hottest on record for European land at 1.54°C above the 1991-2020 average. Already this year, Spain and Portugal have recorded record breaking highs of 46°C for June.

For those who’d prefer not to burn like a sausage on a grill, finding an alternative holiday option is a priority. According to a recent report from the European Travel Commission, holidaymakers are now seeking milder destinations. Europe’s mountains are an obvious choice.

Heidi is one of several ski companies now offering summer breaks at higher altitudes at 20 resorts across Austria, Slovenia, Poland, Italy and France. “We genuinely believe people are happier and healthier from spending time in the mountains, come winter or summer. While mountain resorts have cooler temperatures than the most popular hot spots in the Med, they still offer plenty of summer sunshine and swimming opportunities,” says the company’s co-founder, Marcus Blunt.

Here are a few of the refreshing above-sea-level breaks where it’s possible to soak up sunshine and swim in freshwater lakes.

Superfoods for seniors to boost health 5

Healthy ageing starts with the foods that we put on our plate every day.

We all know that we should be eating our five-a-day, but did you know that drinking beetroot juice could be particularly beneficial for healthy ageing?

Findings from a new study, published in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine, suggests that beetroot juice helps lowers blood pressure in older people by suppressing potentially harmful bacteria in the mouth.

Researchers from The University of Exeter compared the responses of 39 younger adults (under the age of 30) and 36 older adults (in their 60s and 70s) to beetroot juice, which is rich in dietary nitrates. In older people, there was a decline in common bacteria that can sometimes cause infections, and an increase in bacteria that can benefit health.

Researchers also found the older group had decreased blood pressure after drinking the nitrate-rich juice for two weeks.

Professor Andy Jones, of the University of Exeter, said: “This study shows that nitrate-rich foods alter the oral microbiome in a way that could result in less inflammation, as well as a lowering of blood pressure in older people.”

In light of these new findings, we consulted some dietitians to find out what other superfoods in the supermarket could boost seniors’ health…

Yogurt

A few spoonfuls of yogurt a day could help keep your muscles and bones strong.

“Yogurt is rich in protein which can help to prevent muscle loss in elderly people,” says Vassiliki Sinopoulou, registered dietitian and lecturer in evidence synthesis at the University of Central Lancashire.

“It also provides essential calcium and vitamin B12, which boosts muscle and bone strength and physical performance.

“It also helps to maintain a healthy nervous system and cognitive function. Yogurt’s probiotic effect helps to maintain gut function and a healthy balance in the gut microbiome.”

Dr Carrie Ruxton, a dietitian at the Health and Food Supplements Information Service, agrees and recommends Skyr and Greek yogurts in particular.

“They are concentrated sources of protein and also contain calcium which is essential for bone health,” explains Ruxton.

HOW TO SERVE: “Instead of a high-calorie dessert, try plain yogurt with raspberries, blueberries and a sprinkle of milled flaxseed for a fibre boost,” recommends Ruxton.

Oats

Oats are a great source of fibre can help fuel the brain and satisfy hunger.

“Oats and barley contain a specific fibre, called betaglucan, which is proven to lower ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol,” explains Ruxton. “Oat fibre can also help prolong satiety –the feeling of fullness after meals. Oats are also rich in B vitamins which support cognitive function.”

HOW TO SERVE: “Soak oats overnight in apple juice and add a spoon of yogurt and a handful of fruit next morning for a quick breakfast,” recommends Ruxton.

Berries

Fresh berries are nutrient-rich and offer a variety of benefits that can support healthy ageing.

“Berries are a good way to lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, which many people over 70 struggle with,” says Sinopoulou. “Berries are rich in antioxidants and fibre, supporting brain and gut function as we age.”

HOW TO SERVE: “They’re versatile too, and can be eaten raw, with yogurt, in sauces and salads, and can even make desserts a little more healthy and delicious,” says Sinopoulou.

Mackerel

Oily fish like mackerel is great for your bones, heart and brain.

“Around a quarter of Brits are vitamin D deficient, putting their bone health at risk and a survey from HSIS found that almost half of older adults don’t know how much vitamin D they need,” says Ruxton.

“Mackerel and other oily fish are rich in vitamin D and B12 as well as omega-3 fats which support heart and brain health, helping to lower the risk of a stroke or cognitive decline.”

HOW TO SERVE: “Try a smoked mackerel salad with spinach leaves, avocado and cucumber,” suggests Ruxton.

Extra virgin olive oil

Investing in extra virgin olive oil is worthwhile due to its numerous health benefits and superior flavour.

“Extra virgin olive oil is the most essential part of the Mediterranean diet, due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties,” says Sinopoulou. “Rich in monounsaturated fatty acids and polyphenols, it can defend against chronic disease, cognitive decline and promote bone health.

HOW TO SERVE: “Heat oxidises extra virgin olive oil, so it’s best consumed raw as a salad topper or dressing base, on soups, or on bread with tomatoes and herbs,” recommends Sinopoulou.

Affordable family trips you can still book today 5

August is typically the busiest month in the travel calendar. But there are still options for great-value trips, says Sarah Marshall.

As the school gates close for summer, thousands of families are due to set off on their annual big break. In past years, accommodation has been snapped up quickly leaving very few options for any last-minute getaways.

But according to experts, there are still plenty of destinations where it’s possible to book a last-minute holiday without spending a fortune.

From emerging beach resorts on the Black Sea, to staycation city breaks – these are a few of the choices available.

CLAWFORD LAKES RESORT AND SPA, DEVON, UK

There are plenty of opportunities for aquatic adventures at this water sports paradise and wildlife haven with 17 natural lakes, just 30 minutes from Cornwall’s Bude beaches. Accommodation – including Luxury Cocoons, Lake Pods and Floating Lodges – serves as a base for fishing lessons, archery, and paddle boarding, kayaking and open-water swimming on the Leisure Lake. For younger children, there’s an outdoor heated pool with flumes.

School holidays feature Park Ranger sessions and magic shows. Additional family highlights include miles of walking trails and a dedicated dog paddling lake.

HOW: A seven-night stay in a self-catering Signature Lake Pod (sleeps four) costs from £1,079 in August. Visit hoseasons.co.uk.

BRISTOL, UK

For families wishing to fill their days with activities, a staycation city break is a good option. Home of British animation studio Aardman, Bristol, is the setting for a new Gromit Unleashed 3 trail, featuring 50 Wallace & Gromit sculptures spread across the city. Download a map to tick them all off before the end of August.

Continuing the cartoon theme, collective of mural artists Graft will be hosting an art class at Bristol Folk House on August 6, teaching children how to create their own stencil spray art of Gromit or Feathers McGraw. Several hotels are also running Gromit Unleashed 3 special offers this summer, with a donation made to The Grand Appeal, raising funds for Bristol Royal Children’s Hospital.

HOW: Go to visitbristol.co.uk for more on Gromit Unleashed offers.

SUNNY BEACH, BULGARIA

Promising sun, sea and sand at affordable prices, the Black Sea has been growing in popularity over the past few years. According to Daniel Howick, a travel manager from Your Co-op Travel, it offers value, natural beauty, and family-friendly experiences.

“We’ve found holidaymakers love that they can book an entire beach holiday – flights, hotel, food, and drink – for a fraction of the cost they’d pay in Spain, Portugal or Greece,” he says, highlighting the golden sands and Blue Flag-awarded beach at Sunny Beach resort as a favourite.

The cost of an all-inclusive hotel stay is on a par with the price of self-catering holidays in traditional Med destinations, and the cost of taxis, restaurants and attractions is much lower. Other highlights of the area include UNESCO World Heritage Site Nessebar, an ancient town with cobbled streets, Byzantine churches and Roman ruins.

HOW: A seven-night all-inclusive stay at the Sunrise Blue Magic Resort in Obzor costs from £2,839 (two adults and two children), including flights from Birmingham in August. Visit cooptravel.co.uk.

AGADIR, MOROCCO

There was a time when families would rarely venture beyond the Med. But due to a combination of rising prices in Europe and low-cost air links further afield, midhaul holidays are now much more appealing. Topping the charts is Morocco, where – according to new research by online travel agent loveholidays – an all-inclusive break can cost as little as £81 per person per night.

“North African destinations like Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt offer a huge range of affordable, great quality all inclusive resorts, making them a top choice for costconscious couples and families alike this summer,” says Al Murray, chief marketing officer at loveholidays.

Promising 300 days of sunshine each year coupled with a refreshing Atlantic breeze, southern resort town Agadir is a popular choice. Swim in the sea or one of the natural pools dotted around the Paradise Valley gorge inland. In town, the Souk El Had is a maze of spices, trinkets and colourful wonders. Further along the coast, it’s possible to make a day trip to laidback surf town Taghazout.

HOW: A seven-night all-inclusive stay at El Pueblo Tamlelt resort in Agadir in August costs from £1236 (for four), including flights. Visit loveholidays.com.

WHITBY, UK

As Britain continues to bathe in sunshine, traditional seaside towns are enjoying a resurgence. Historic Yorkshire town Whitby has been crowned top choice by UK self-catering specialists Sykes Cottages, with a report suggesting 63% of Brits plan to holiday in the UK this year.

“It’s no surprise to see Whitby leading the way for school summer holidays,” says managing director James Shaw, crediting its mix of natural beauty, rich history and family-friendly activities. “We’re seeing more families prioritise stress-free getaways – whether that means scenic coastlines, charming local towns or easy access to the great outdoors.”

Earning its nickname ‘The Dinosaur Coast’, there are hundreds of ammonite fossils and dinosaur footprints scattered along its pebble beaches. Along with hunting for these ancient natural treasures, families can also spot minke whales and dolphins from June to October.

HOW: A seven-night self-catering stay at Olton Hall @ Engine Shed (sleeps four) costs from £1,452 in August. Visit sykescottages.co.uk.

It takes a staggering 17 articulated 45-foot trailers to move the show from one venue to the next—an intricate process completed in just four days, thanks to a team working around the clock. With 35 adult cast members, five rotating teams of children, 12 orchestra musicians, and an extensive backstage crew—from dressers and automation operators to physiotherapists and wig specialists—the scale is as breathtaking offstage as it is on. The flown nursery alone weighs nearly two tons, while the wardrobe department tackles 64 loads of laundry each week and keeps over 90 real-hair wigs performance-ready. Every detail, from rubber-soled shoes to hand-labeled costumes, is meticulously managed to ensure the show’s seamless spectacle night after night.

Emerging home design trends to tap into now

These are the styles set to take over our homes, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

If you’re talking renovations, upgrades and making the most of what you have, it’s good to be in the know… after all, there’s nothing spontaneous about a considered design brief.

Especially when you have the opportunity to create the ideal layout, knowing the latest design trends and exploring ‘what’s in and what’s out’ means you can make informed decisions – with the potential to add value to your property.

To put you on the front foot, home and design platform Houzz has identified the latest home trends gaining traction…

“Based on insights from the 2025 Emerging Trends Report, there’s a growing appetite for indulgent upgrades and bold, expressive design,” highlights Amanda Pollard, senior editor at Houzz. “From luxurious bathroom retreats to colour-drenched interiors.”

Here’s the lowdown on what’s key, and influencing our style choices…

ABOVE

Wood-drenched interiors

“From wood beams to wooden floors and everything in between, homeowners are embracing wood; thanks to its timeless appeal and ability to add tone and texture to a space,” underlines Pollard.

Indeed, she says searches for wood beams are up significantly, and terms like ‘oak kitchen’ and ‘wood kitchen’ have also been on the rise.

Wooden wall treatments such as slat walls and panels are trending, adds Pollard, and with the help of 3D floor-plan tools, you can see how to integrate these wall treatments.

Randa Kort of Randa Kort Interior Architecture & Design says: “Incorporating natural wood in less conventional ways, such as wall treatments, can add character and visual interest to any space.

“While some of our clients use natural materials like wood to add warmth; others use it to create a more elevated look, and choosing interior wood cladding for their projects.”

Daylighting

As Pollard points out, natural light is a commodity and trending searches for daylighting features show we’re in pursuit of airy, sun-filled spaces.

With the positive benefits of enhancing light flow and architectural detail throughout the home, she says searches for skylights, orangeries and glass wall partitions have been climbing.

James Snell, director of Snell David Cambridge LTD, says: “It’s important to consider all of the potential avenues, as you seek to maximise the natural light throughout your home.”

“Many [people] don’t explore the creative and strategic options to brighten up their spaces, and they’re missing out,” notes Snell. “Adding a skylight, for example, can transform a dark space and internal glass doors can help light flow from one room to the next.”

LEFT

Wall-to-wall design

More and more of us are willing to go bold with our interiors, embracing colour and pattern in the home, suggests Pollard. “Whether they’re using vibrant paint, dramatic texture or layered pattern, they’re making a statement with creative wall treatments.”

More recently, she says searches for a technique known as ‘colour drenching’ – where a single colour, or closely related set of colours, is applied to all surfaces in a room, including walls, ceilings and woodwork – is trending.

And while some may have previously hesitated from making such bold interior decor choices, Pollard says today’s visualisation tools help empower them to be more adventurous. “As it’s easier to visualise how it will all come together.”

Gilly Foulds, founder of Completion Interior Design & Architecture, says: “Bold tones and rich textures infuse personality into a space, and homeowners are taking note. Not only that, but these more daring choices help to create a space that’s uniquely yours, with a distinct personal touch.”

Luxurious bathrooms

There’s a growing appetite for high-end upgrades, and bathrooms offer an opportunity to introduce luxury into everyday life, outlines Pollard. “This year, interest in luxurious materials has skyrocketed, with ‘onyx tile’ searches 1,069% higher than last year, and ‘marble bathroom’ searches up 51%.”

She says trends also reveal a growing interest in features that are both luxurious and practical, such as double vanities and double showers.

And consistent with Houzz’s 2024 Bathroom Trends report, freestanding baths are among the most soughtafter bathroom features, says Pollard. “Whether it’s a bespoke walk-in shower or high-end materials, our clients are seeking to elevate their bathroom spaces to invoke a spa-like atmosphere,” highlights Snell.

LEFT

Moreover, he says people are increasingly interested in creating dedicated spaces for relaxation and wellness within their homes. “And many of them are willing to invest in luxury fixtures and features, to transform their bathrooms into sanctuaries.”

Pretty in pink

“From the kitchen to the bathroom, pink is back in a big way,” underlines Pollard. She says soft, plaster-pink hues are particularly popular, due to their versatility and subtle sophistication.

“Searches for pink bathrooms, pink kitchens and pink bedrooms are all on the rise, which further speaks to pink’s adaptability,” she notes.

Francesco Pierazzi of Francesco Pierazzi Architects says: “Considered a neutral by many, soft pink pairs beautifully with a range of colours and styles.

“Beyond that, the shade has warm undertones, which evokes a sense of calm and tranquillity within the home.”

Embracing the ‘fat furniture’ trend with style

Chunky shapes and and sculptural seating is all the rage, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

When it comes to home comforts and sinking into a seat, embracing the chubby aesthetic is the latest fashion and style trend… think full-figured furnishings which hug you with their oversized proportions.

“After years of sleek minimalism and hard edges, people are gravitating towards furniture that feels softer and more human, explains Jessica Hubner, founder of UK furnishings brand Collection Seven.

‘Fat furniture’ with its rounded silhouettes and generous proportions offers exactly that… it’s bold, sculptural and surprisingly comforting.”

Indeed, she says there’s a growing appetite for statement pieces that feel like art… but function beautifully in everyday spaces.

“There’s an emotional pull to these shapes – they echo the human form and create a sense of ease and warmth that more angular styles often can’t,” says Hubner.

“People want their homes to feel expressive and inviting, and this trend taps into that perfectly.”

Kellie Wyles, head of upholstery at DFS, agrees: “The growing popularity of ‘fat furniture’ reflects a broader shift towards creating interiors that feel calm, inviting, and effortlessly liveable.

“These generously proportioned pieces strike a balance between indulgent comfort and everyday practicality – offering ample space to host guests in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.”

PICTURED

Characterised by oversized silhouettes, deep seats, plush cushioning, and expansive footrests, Wyles says this trend turns the home into a personal sanctuary.

“Soft curves, neutral tones, and natural materials like wood and linen enhance the sense of serenity, grounding the space in warmth and tactility.”

This trend is also driven by a desire for wellness, suggests Wyles. “Both physical and emotional. As our homes become havens from busy modern life, people are increasingly drawn to furniture that promotes rest, relaxation, and a sense of escape.”

How to introduce voluptuous shapes at home

You don’t need to overhaul your entire interior to embrace this look, says Hubner. “One well-placed piece can completely transform a space.

“A curved armchair in a reading corner, a chunky coffee table in the lounge, or even a sculptural foot stool can bring that ‘soft statement’ into your home without overwhelming it.

Or you can really go for the trend with a statement item, such as a Seventies-inspired sofa. “The key is to let these pieces lead,” advises Hubner. “Curved forms naturally draw the eye, so give them space to shine –they’re surprisingly versatile when styled with more classic items.”

Materials that compliment curves

Texture is everything when it comes to curved furniture, highlights Hubner. “We tend to lean into fabrics that enhance softness – think bouclé, velvet, and rich leathers. These not only emphasise the shape, but add a layer of comfort and visual interest.”

But it’s not just about soft materials, underlines Hubner. “Curves also look incredible in lacquered finishes, marble, or warm-toned woods.” BELOW

She says combining tactile fabrics with polished accents is a way to create depth and balance, while keeping the shape as the focal point.

The art of styling ‘fat furniture’

When styling voluminous furniture, Hubner says to give it room to breathe. “These pieces are inherently sculptural – they don’t want to be crammed into corners or surrounded by clutter.”

The designer says to pair them with simpler, more linear items to let the form stand out. “For example, a plump sofa works beautifully with a slim, metal side table or a clean-lined floor lamp.”

If you’re working with a smaller space, she says balance is key. “Use mirrors, lighting and contrasting textures to keep the room feeling open and intentional.

“And don’t be afraid to mix and match eras or styles – a curved chair looks just as good in a Victorian terrace as it does in a modern flat.”

Where to place ‘fat furniture’ Statement pieces work best where they’ll make the most impact, suggests Hubner. “Living rooms and open-plan spaces are ideal for larger curved pieces, like sofas or lounge chairs.

“In more private areas like bedrooms or home offices, a rounded bench or pouffe can add a soft touch without dominating the space.”

She continues: “Even in compact homes, you can work the trend with smaller-scale pieces. Look for items with volume but not necessarily huge footprints – a curved armchair, or rounded bedside table can still capture the look.”

Where it works best

For anyone new to the trend, Hubner says to start with an armchair. “It’s low-commitment but high impact and incredibly easy to style.

“Sofas are a natural next step if you’re ready for more of a statement. Curved furniture also works beautifully in communal areas – family rooms, dining spaces, or anywhere you want people to feel at ease.”

In addition, home cinema sofas are taking their cue from the ‘fat furniture’ trend, says Wyles. “An oversized corner sofa perfectly embodies this movement, combining luxurious proportions with smart, considered features such as hidden cup holders, built-in charging ports, and Bluetooth. Designed to enhance comfort and support modern living… it’s all about creating a sanctuary where wellness and indulgence go hand in hand.”

Treasure House and Pimlico Road Summer St party

Treasure House was “Richly Chic” and exciting, now with a stylish hospitality offering by Firmdale Hotels (The Soho Hotel, Ham Yard).

As I can only absorb art on a full stomach, I tucked into smoked trout salad and a glass of Muscadet, then followed my nose to a sunny terrace. There, I admired a monumental bronze ram’s head—its sculptor nearby—set against the elegant backdrop of Chelsea Barracks.

On to the fair! First stop: Philip Mould (Fake or Fortune?) with a gorgeous Cedric Morris floral and historic portraits, all framed by pleated, multi-coloured fabric walls. The fair buzzed with vibrant, unusual pieces— some gloriously OTT, all exquisitely crafted. Definitely a case of “If you have to ask the price…”

The Bugatti exhibit featured vintage cars, bronzes, and a sleek azure-blue Chiron supercar gleaming at the entrance. A breathtaking Canaletto of Venice showed the Doge afloat on Ascension Day—astonishing in its detail.

Later, I headed to Pimlico Road’s Summer Street Party, the heart of high-end interiors. At Jamb, Will Fisher’s chimneypieces dazzled; next door, Christopher Howe’s raw upholstery impressed—even Howard Chairs would feel the heat.

After a Mojito dash to catch the 8:20 to Crewkerne, I returned to Dorset, recharged and brimming with ideas.

How to turn your kids into garden explorers this summer

Fun activities are key to getting children involved with nature, according to experts.

The school holidays are well and truly here and there’s no better time to help your children connect with nature.

But, as we all know, that can be easier said than done.

“Fun needs to be the order of the day,” says Kim Stoddart, editor of Amateur Gardening magazine and author of The Climate Change Resilient Vegetable Garden. “This is an opportunity for everyone to really relish embracing some child’s play in our garden this summer.”

She offers five project ideas to encourage your children into the garden – and give you some fun at the same time.

Become an explorer

“This might require explorers’ hats for extra fun and to get into the role, but encourage the kids to pick up old stones, look under foliage and dig down to see what they can find.

“It’s great to look at where the insects are living, what they might eat and what role they play in the garden. Even the scary ones like spiders have a valuable role to play, and the more you look, the more you see.

“It can also be very educational, you can photograph some of the insects and later look them up with your children, discovering things about those you don’t recognise, and get a sense of what they do and what role they play.”

Children who enjoy seeing and recording butterflies in their garden might want to take part in Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count which runs to Sunday, August 10 and invites participants to sit for 15 minutes and record which species they see. Download the charity’s butterfly ID chart and send in your recordings to help identify important trends in the species.

Build a mini-pond

This can be as simple as digging a hole and putting an old washing up bowl or bucket into it, filling it with water and maybe adding some aquatic plants and stones which will help visiting wildlife exit the water, Stoddart suggests. “Even an old plastic dustbin lid could be cleaned and then you put it upside down and fill it with water.”

Under supervision, encourage the children to help dig the hole for the container, which should sit snugly in the ground, its rim aligning with the surface, and fill it up from a water butt, if you have one, or alternatively from a tap.

Fill in any gaps at the side with earth and stones, and find extra stones or bricks to put in the pond so that if,

for instance, hedgehogs enter the pond, they can also exit it, she says.

“Placing stones around the outside can make useful hiding spots for creatures like ground beetles and for amphibians.

“Maybe even put some plants there, some herbs and tall foliage – it’s amazing how quickly wildlife will move in. You’ll see pond skaters there quickly, for example.

“You have to be careful with pond plants as some of them can be a bit invasive. So visit a pond plant specialist and look for ones that aerate the water as well.”

Include a seating area for the children near the pond, whether it be a simple log, a hammock or a temporary picnic blanket, so they can not only admire their work but also enjoy the wildlife that visits it.

Get messy with seed balls

Children love to get messy and creating seed balls will do just that.

“They’re very tactile and fun to make so there’s an instant connection with the earth,” says Stoddart.

Take five parts of multi-purpose peat-free compost, suitable for seed-sowing. Then take two parts of red clay powder, available from art shops. Put it all in a mixing bowl and gradually add water, stirring it to create a solid consistency which you can squeeze into balls in your hand, she advises.

The balls don’t have to be big – keep them to around an inch in diameter – and add a wildflower seed mix to them, she suggests.

“It’s great for messy, tactile play, but it’s the throwing of the seed balls which is incredibly popular. It feels a little bit naughty when they are throwing them.

“They can throw them into areas of your garden where you would like wildflowers to grow but also consider growing your own mixes such as loose leaf lettuce and a radish mix which could be thrown into corners of, say, vegetable beds that you have already.”

If they hurl the seed balls into areas where you think they are not going to grow, you can retrieve them once the excitement has died down and place them into, say, a pot and keep them watered.

Forage for flowers

Encourage their creativity by getting the children to forage for flowers, whether it be in your flower bed or vegetable patch. Lettuce that has set seed, brassicas which are bearing flowers can be used for cutting or even weeds such as dandelions and daisies, she advises.

“They could be dried or used to create a pretty flower display in the home or as decorative additions in the kitchen. It opens up a talking point about what these flowers are and what they can be used for.”

Under supervision, children can learn that by cutting flowers such as sweet peas they will be encouraging further flushes of flowers.

Dipping foliage like fern leaves and seedheads such as bronze fennel into water-based paints to use as paintbrushes can create interesting swirls and patterns, which could be made into pretty cards.

Create a mini-bug hotel

Encourage the children to forage for items which are already in the garden which might make a great home for insects, she advises.

“You’ll need a central structure, and older children could get creative by using old palettes or something as simple as an old terracotta plant plot. Turn it on its side and then fill with materials such as bits of gravel, old tiles, bricks, pine cones, sticks, twigs and even bits of old wool clothing that’s falling apart, to create an area for insects.”

SUZUKI’S 70 YEARS OF PRODUCTION FROM PETROL TO PURE ELECTRIC

This Autumn, as Suzuki gets ready to launch e Vitara, it’s very first electric vehicle, it’s interesting to look back to where it all began 70 years ago. Back in the Autumn of 1955, Michio Suzuki personally delivered a Suzulight, his very first production car, to a local doctor who had previously been conducting his house calls on a bicycle.

Although Michio Suzuki had first started in business much earlier than that in March 1920 with the manufacture of textile looms. When there was a global decline in the cotton industry; Suzuki then diversified into motorised transport with introduction of its first motorcycle in 1953 and the first car followed two years later.

Initial research and development of Suzulight began as far back as 1937 although this had to be shelved later with the outbreak of the second World War. This development finally resumed in 1954 when Suzuki Motor Co Limited was formed.

Michio Suzuki quickly began researching vehicles produced overseas and gained a wealth of knowledge. Suzulight was compact measuring less than three metres in length and weighing just over 500kg. It was powered by a 360cc, 15PS two cylinder, two-stroke engine and the first car in Japan to feature a Front Wheel Drive / Front engine layout. It was ahead of its time with independent coil spring suspension and rack and pinion steering.

Suzulight easily met the Japanese ‘Keijidosha’ or Kei light car legislation and Suzuki and his team quickly began their first development road testing of it. As

a prototype, its most memorable early drive was a 300km trip across the Hakone mountainous region between Hamamatsu and Tokyo which proved very challenging on roads that had not yet been paved. Although arriving very late in the evening, the team arrived to present the car to the President of ‘Yanase Auto’ Japan’s leading authority on Automobiles.

The President had stayed on late to greet the team and made his way out to thoroughly test the car. Several hours later he returned very impressed and immediately gave Suzuki full approval to put the Suzulight into production. Production commenced in October 1955 with initial production of 3-4 cars per month but by early 1956 monthly volume had climbed to 30 units.

70 years on, Suzuki is renowned as the ‘small car experts’ and produces well over three million units per year with a projection of four million units annually by 2030.

Shhh… listen to the engine. It’s crying for help.
She’s seen things. Terrible MOT things.

NEW KIA SPORTAGE - PRICING AND SPECIFICATIONS

Kia has revealed prices and specifications for their new Sportage, the brand’s bestselling model in the UK, Europe and worldwide. The first customer deliveries due to begin later this year.

The new Sportage has undergone a mid-life refresh, with a new exterior and interior design, as well as the innovative technologies from Kia’s newest models.

The new model is priced from £30,885 for petrol models, with the Hybrid (HEV) available to order from £34,425 and the PHEV powertrain will also return to the UK lineup later in the year. Kia is also introducing a simplified three-tier line-up to the Sportage range, comprising ‘Pure’, ‘GT-Line’, and ‘GTLine S’ models. For the first time, all three powertrains – ICE, HEV and PHEV – will be available across every trim level in the line-up.

First on sale in the UK in 1995, and through five generations proving itself to be a firm favourite with motorists. Over its 30-year lifespan, Kia has sold more than 450,000 Sportage vehicles in the UK alone, and more than seven million globally. Consistently

the brand’s UK, European and global bestseller and is currently the best-selling SUV in the country and the UK’s second most popular vehicle.

At the front, the latest version integrates a new front bumper and stacked LED headlight design, and LED ‘Star Map’ daytime running lights, replacing the boomerang-style DRLs of its predecessor. The grille has been enlarged, bringing Kia’s classic tiger nose to bring the Sportage’s appearance closer to other models in the brand’s line-up, such as the EV3, EV6, Sorento and Picanto. Along the side, the Sportage retains the same silhouette, but receives redesigned side cladding and trim beneath the doors. At the rear a redesigned

bumper and skid plate to widen the appearance and road presence of the car. Its rear lights have been redesigned with the ‘Star Map’ aesthetic.

Inside, the touchscreen now features Kia’s new connected car Navigation Cockpit with new dual 12.3-inch screens with more squared-off corners than the units in the previous model. ‘Pure’ and ‘GT-Line’ models receive a 4.3-inch driver display.

The centre console, previously finished in glossy piano black plastic, has been swapped out for a brushed-effect finish, minimising the visual impact of dust and fingerprints. As usual, Kia will offer varying seat upholstery finishes dependant on grade, and the dashboard has been updated with new hidden air vent design.

A choice of three powertrains across all three trim levels are a 1.6-litre T-GDi and a 1.6-litre T-GDi Hybrid (HEV). The Hybrid pairs a 1.49kWh battery pack with the combustion engine, maximising refinement and efficiency. The Sportage Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) will be offered later in 2025.

RENAULT 4 E-TECH ELECTRIC – MODERN REINVENTION OF THE ORIGINAL

The Renault 4 E-Tech electric, a modern reinvention of the iconic original, will be priced from £26,995 OTR when order books open here in the UK in July.

Available in three trim levels from launch – evolution, techno (£28,995), and iconic (£30,995), with the option of the electric “plein sud™” canvas roof on the latter two,

from a later date –Renault say the 4 E-Tech electric continues the original Renault 4’s sense of go-anywhere practicality, with increased ground clearance and suspension optimised for a smoother, more comfortable ride.

In the first of many nods to the original Renault 4’s design, the front grille is made from a single 1.45m-long piece and illuminated with a continuous surround

(available from techno trim). Likewise, the original’s iconic three-part rear lights are given a new lease of life.

Other retro-inspired touches include the bonnet lines that continue to the bottom of the grille, the rear quarter window, the three lines sculpted into the doors that bring to mind the plastic protectors of the original, and the distinctive forms in the roof, now adorned with roof bars.

The boot space of 420 litres reveals various little touches such as the four lashing hooks, two bag hooks, rubber bands to hold objects in place, and storage compartments including a 55-litre underfloor area perfect for the charging cable. With the rear seat folded down boot space is extended to 1,405 litres.

Standard across the range is wireless Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® connectivity, accessed via a 10.1-inch central touchscreen. Techno and iconic models go further with Google services built-in, including Google Maps with chargingoptimised route planning and a variety of apps from the Google Play store. On these models, the central screen is joined by a 10inch digital driver information display.

Evoking the original, the “plein sud™” electric opening canvas roof opens at the touch of a button or by voice control. Six body colours are available from launch, including an exclusive new shade – Hautsde-France Green – that pays tribute to the Île-de-France Blue of the 1960s.

The 52 kWh battery powers a 110 kW (150 hp, 245 Nm) electric motor that accelerates the Renault 4 E-Tech electric from 0 to 100kph/62mph in 8.2 seconds, with a driving range of up to 247 miles. The new One Pedal function (available from techno) optimises regenerative braking, decelerating smoothly when the driver releases the accelerator pedal and coming to a stop without the driver having to apply the brake.

Already the recipient of the ‘Electric Car of the Year’ award in the TopGear.com Electric Car Awards 2025, the Renault 4 E-Tech electric further expands Renault’s already burgeoning EV line-up.

50 YEARS OF THE VOLKSWAGEN POLO

“Small on the outside. Big on the inside.”

This was the slogan used by Volkswagen 50 years ago to advertise its latest product at the time, the Polo. When the small car came on the market in early May 1975, nobody expected that this extremely compact twodoor car would become such a bestseller – nationally and internationally, over five decades, in six generations and more than 20 million examples sold worldwide.

When the first new Polos were on sale at dealerships, they were part of a new Volkswagen model family that took off in the early 1970s. In the spring of 1975, the angular small car followed the Passat (1973) and Golf (1974) of the then still young water-cooled model generation, which

succeeded the legendary VW Beetle. Throughout six model generations, the Polo is still hugely popular today and has made the model a bestseller. Recognition from national and international trade media includes awards such as Car of the Year 2010, World Car of the Year 2010 and World Urban Car 2018.

What began as a simple two-door vehicle in 1975 has been perfected and expanded in many facets over five decades: in a total of six generations, as a hatchback, Coupé, and as a sporty G40 or GTI1, as a colourful Harlequin, an estate, a notchback with the name Derby, a CrossPolo with a distinctly off-road look, as an efficient BlueMotion and, of course, as an extremely succesful R WRC, which was crowned with four World Championship titles in the World Rally Championship from 2013 to 2016.

Each generation of the Polo has offered more with new features such as front and side airbags, power steering, belt tensioners and ABS were introduced and made sure the Polo remained successful. Today the Polo boasts assist and convenience systems that are otherwise available only in higher vehicle classes. Its popularity worldwide seems undiminished and it will be kept up to date in the coming year.

Series production of the Polo began in March 1975 at Volkswagen’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, with 1.1 million units being produced there by 1981. As the model increased in importance, production was spread to other locations around the world, including Spain, Argentina, South Africa, Slovenia, China, Brazil and India. With more than 20 million units built, the Polo is one of the world’s most successful small compact vehicles.

SUZUKI VITARA – COMFORTABLE, CAPABLE AND REFINED

These days there’s a plethora of cars in grey, silver and black and, it seems, very little else. Occasionally you see a colour such as red or blue and it stands out. Then you get the cars with a colour that has you reaching for the sunglasses.

My recent Suzuki Vitara test car was a case in point, finished in a very bright metallic yellowy gold, or solar yellow to give it the correct name. Thanks to a duo tone scheme with black roof the effect was to lessen the impact slightly and it suited the Vitara well. To my surprise there were quite a few favourable comments on the colour too.

The Vitara has been a staple of the Suzuki line up for years and regular facelifts and updates to the car, and engines, have made the latest version a comfortable, capable and refined SUV. Prices start from £27,299 and all models come with either mild or full hybrid assistance and there’s a choice of two and four-wheel-drive. It’s

50 years since Suzuki’s All-Grip system was launched and they are amazingly capable off road, and I’m not talking about the local field at a village fete but proper off-roading.

Standard fare includes adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and start, navigation, Bluetooth, auto dimming mirrors, high beam assist, heated and powered door mirrors, auto lights and wipers and tyre pressure monitoring. Two trim levels are on offer, Motion and Ultra, and an option of either 6-speed manual or automatic gears.

The interior of the Vitara is nicely finished and whilst earlier models had quite a lot of hard plastics the latest versions are a definite step up in terms of quality. Comfortable, good amounts of space and nicely refined the Vitara is an easy drive. The ride quality is good and if you are in the All-Grip, or 4-wheel-drive, model a rotary control makes it easy to switch drives depending on the conditions.

Looks are subjective but most agree that the Vitara is a good-looking car. The mildhybrid two-wheel-drive model returns a creditable 53.2mpg and, although none of the Vitaras are quick, 0 to 62mph in 9.5 seconds, which is more than adequate. The full hybrid model improves on the mpg but is more sedate to the benchmark 62mph.

Suzuki has a well-deserved reputation for reliability and this just adds to the Vitara’s appeal. It may not be among the premium SUVs but needs to be on your shopping list for a useable and very capable SUV.

José Pizarro’s tips for mastering the basics of Spanish cooking

The famed Spanish chef talks key ingredients and cooking techniques with Lauren Taylor.

Anyone can master the basics of Spanish cuisine at home, says famed chef José Pizarro – with some key ingredients, done right.

“We know Spanish food is very popular now, since so many very creative chefs have been doing more irregular food – but the reality of Spanish cuisine is the simplicity,” says the 53-year-old restauranteur. “It’s all about ingredients that are top bar by themselves.”

Originally from a rural village near Cáceres, Extremadura, Pizarro has lived in London for almost 25 years and now has eight restaurants under his name.

A regular guest on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen, ITV’s This Morning and Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, Pizarro has become known to many as the Godfather of Spanish cuisine in the UK.

His latest book, The Spanish Pantry, focusses on ingredients key to the cuisine, from chorizo, jamón and Manchego to almonds, chickpeas and saffron. Cutting it down to just 12 items was “challenging”, he says, but everything included is accessible, easy to find and “the recipes are very easy for people to cook”.

So what’s his advice for using some of the key ingredients correctly?

ABOVE

Choose the right tomatoes

Tomatoes are at the heart of so many Spanish classics, from gazpacho to pan con tomate, and you’ll often find them alongside fish dishes. But firstly, how do you pick the right ones?

“There are so many bad tomatoes around,” says Pizarro. “For me, the tomato is about the juice and the smell. If you can see all the tomatoes looking a little different [rather than uniform] then it’s a good tomato. They are not made in a laboratory.

“But wait until the season comes and just buy the tomatoes where they grow in their proper place. We are lucky enough that we can get very good tomatoes here in the UK, but the tomatoes that grow under 40 degrees are always going to taste much, much better. So Spain, Italy… As a chef, you just want to cut them in the middle, good extra virgin olive oil and some good salt, and life is good!”

Use vine tomatoes for soups and sauces, he suggests, “Because they have the perfect balance of liquid inside”, while the big, round tomatoes are best for salads.

Roast peppers to get the best flavour

From stews to seafood dishes, blistered Padrón peppers doused in olive oil and eaten as tapas, and peppers stuffed with slow-cooked ragu (pimientos rellenos), they’re essential to Spanish cooking.

Bell pepper season is coming up. “I cannot wait to have one in the oven – a little bit of oil and salt and roast them,” says Pizarro. “That is happiness on my plate! “I think peppers are so nice and versatile. For me, roasting definitely gets the best flavour.”

But to get tasty peppers for Spanish cuisine year-round, he suggests sourcing piquillo peppers in jars. “They are really good for many things, salads, stews.”

José Pizarro’s The Spanish Pantry | Quandrille/PA

melted down and it’s absolutely delicious. My mum always says that food needs time – you cannot accelerate food. We really cannot.”

Buy a good rice – “that is principle, all the rice the same size and not too many broken grains, but what makes the rice, for me, is the stock.” So buy good ones, or make your own – a vegetable one is very versatile.

“You can do a very strong vegetable stock where I burn my onions, it gives a very good balance of bitterness to the stock. I burn the onions first, and then I caramelise the rest of the ingredients for a very long time. The balance of the caramelised vegetables with the burnt onions is really yummy.”

Don’t overcook your tortilla

Don’t rush caramelised onions

Sofrito is a classic base made by slowly caramelising onions with garlic, tomatoes and olive oil, but slow cooking onions is an art form – and should take time, says Pizarro.

“I do white onion, always Spanish onion, sliced very, very thin. Plenty in a big pan, just a little bit of salt and extra virgin olive oil and cook on a very low heat for a very long time – more than an hour.

“What we are looking for is to bring the sugars out. You will have the natural sugar from the onion coming out in the water, and we are cooking those onions with that liquid, [that’s] when you see the onion really melt down.

“I just take off the lid and put the heat up. When you put the heat up, what we are doing is evaporating the liquid and caramelising the sugar.”

It may take a long time but the results are worth it, he says, and they can be kept in the fridge for a couple of weeks or more. “I normally have my caramelised onions at home on a canape or on toast with cheese,

Pack flavour into rice

Arguably the most famous of Spanish dishes, paella has become a symbol of the country’s cuisine around the world. “For me, rice is one of my favourite things – I get lost in my house in Spain, sometimes people are looking for me, they say, ‘What have you been doing for three hours?’ I say, ‘Look, I have just been cooking our lunch – a simple rice.”

Whether it’s paella, or another rice dish (sobrasada rice with crispy artichokes is a top seller across the José Pizarro restaurants), the most important thing is the stock.

“The stock is what makes or breaks it, it brings everything to the rice. You need to take your time and you need to make your stock absolutely delicious, because rice just absorbs all the flavour. When I do my stocks, I use the same spices in the stock that I’m going to use in my dish.

“That is how I spend my time and I have to say, it’s very therapeutic,” he says. “The rice is going to take only maybe 20 minutes to cook, but the time that you do your stock, your garnish, it takes more than two hours easily.”

“For me, the Spanish omelette has to be with onions, because I grew up with the tortilla with onion,” he says. “Good eggs – people need to spend good money on eggs. The base with olive oil, and then you just put in a hot pan, if you want to have to have a runny one then turn over very quick. It will take a minute and a half and it’s going to be nice and caramelised outside, and beautiful and runny inside.”

His own mother always cooked tortilla a little more though. “All my life, because my mum cooks [her’s] perfectly moist inside –nothing wrong with that.”

INGREDIENTS

6 chunky pork belly ribs

200ml white wine

Pared zest of 1 lemon

4 sprigs of oregano

Good pinch of pimentón

75ml olive oil

1 large onion, finely sliced

2 red peppers, deseeded and sliced

3 large tomatoes, chopped

3 garlic cloves, crushed

300g bomba or other medium-grain paella rice

700ml fresh chicken stock

Flaky sea salt & freshly ground black pepper

INGREDIENTS

10 spring onions, trimmed

120ml olive oil

175g red-skinned potatoes, peeled and finely sliced

4 large free-range eggs

75ml extra virgin olive oil

Flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Arroz al horno with pork ribs

SERVES 6, TAKES 3 HOURS PLUS MARINATING

1. Put the ribs in a dish with the white wine, lemon zest, oregano and pimentón and marinate for one to two hours, or overnight.

2. Preheat the oven to 140°C fan (160°C/320°F/gas 2-3). Put the ribs in an ovenproof dish and cover with kitchen foil. Bake for two hours, or until tender.

3. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a paella pan or ovenproof dish. Fry the onion and peppers for 10 minutes until really softened, then add the tomatoes and garlic and cook for five more minutes.

4. Increase the oven temperature to 170°C fan (190°C/375°F/gas 5).

5. Add the rice to the pan, then nestle the ribs into the rice, pouring in any of their juices. Pour over the stock, season well with salt and pepper and return to the oven.

6. Bake for 40-45 minutes until the rice is tender and the ribs are browned, then serve.

Griddled spring onion

tortilla

SERVES 4, TAKES 30 MINUTES

1. Heat a griddle pan over a high heat. Toss the spring onions in two tablespoons of the olive oil and griddle until tender and charred. Remove from the pan, season with salt and pepper and chop the spring onions. Heat the remaining olive oil in an 18-20 centimetre non-stick frying pan and cook the potatoes very gently for 10 minutes, until just tender.

2. Beat the eggs with plenty of salt and pepper. Drain the potatoes, reserving the oil, and, while they are still warm, toss them and the spring onions with the eggs.

3. Put two tablespoons of oil back into the pan and place over a medium heat. Pour in the egg and potato mixture then jiggle the pan until the eggs start to set around the edges. Reduce the heat to low and cook for five to six minutes until the eggs are almost but not quite set.

4. Invert the pan onto a flat board, then quickly slide the tortilla back into the pan – it might ooze a little but don’t worry as it will re-form once you return it to the pan. Place back on the heat and with a spatula, tuck the edges of the tortilla under themselves to create the classic rounded edge. Continue to cook for another three to four minutes.

5. Turn the tortilla out onto a plate and serve.

Crispy fried Manchego salad

SERVES 4, TAKES 30 MINUTES

INGREDIENTS

150g rocket

2 oranges (or blood oranges, when in season), segmented

250g Manchego, cut into cubes

2tbsp plain flour

1 free-range egg, beaten

100g panko breadcrumbs

300ml olive oil, for deep-frying

1tbsp honey

1tsp Dijon mustard

Juice of 1⁄2 lemon

3-4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. Put the rocket and orange segments in a large serving bowl.

2. Dust the Manchego cubes in flour. Dip in the beaten egg, then coat all over in panko.

3. Heat the olive oil in a small, deep pan to 170°C (340°F).

4. Fry the cubes of cheese a few at a time until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.

5. Blend half the honey with the mustard, lemon juice, salt and pepper, then whisk in the extra virgin olive oil to form a dressing. Pour it over the leaves and toss together.

6. Drizzle the rest of the honey over the cheese and scatter over the salad and serve straight away.

A grand tradition by the sea

Nestled on Bournemouth’s prestigious East Cliff, the Cumberland Hotel is a four‑star Art Deco gem that first opened its doors in 1936–37, built on the grounds of the old Fern Cliff estate. With its grand Italian marble lobby, sweeping sea views, and glamorous 1920s–30s style, the hotel evokes the elegance of Miami’s Ocean Drive.

During the Second World War, it was briefly commandeered to house defence troops, and post‑war became Europe’s largest Orthodox Jewish hotel, complete with its own synagogue and nightly dance bands.

Over the years, the shimmering lobby and iconic poolside Lido have welcomed many famous faces—Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra have lingered here, their portraits a nod to the hotel’s golden‑age Hollywood connection.

Curry nights: a local gem

These days, the Cumberland is beloved not just for its history but for its legendary Thursday curry nights, hosted inside its acclaimed Ventana Grand Café. For just £19.95, guests enjoy a feast of authentic, aromatic flavours that celebrate the best of Indian cuisine—an unbeatable value that brings a vibrant midweek buzz to Bournemouth locals.

A fine-dining feast to remember

We dined at Ventana Grand Café, the Cumberland’s award winning restaurant, and were treated to a truly unforgettable culinary experience. The evening began with Poole Bay oysters—briny, fresh, and melted on the tongue—followed by a remarkable Spanish chorizo Scotch egg, perfectly crisp on the outside with a yolk that oozes.

The highlight of our starters, though, was the pan‑seared Loch Fyne scallops, caramelised to golden perfection and kissed with sea salt and herb butter: simple yet sublime.

For mains, the chef’s seafood linguine stole the show—plump prawns, tender mussels, and chewy clams bathed in a silky, saffron‑infused cream sauce.

Equally impressive was the fillet steak, outstanding in its tenderness and richness, dressed with a luxurious Isle of Wight blue‑cheese sauce whose tang cut beautifully through the meaty juiciness.

Dessert was a show‑stopper: a Dubai chocolate tart—decadently dark, with a velvety ganache inside a crisp pastry case—elevated by a dusting of pistachio and a quenelle of cream. Each spoonful was rich, balanced, and utterly indulgent—a sweet finale to a memorable evening.

Why locals should come to Ventana Grand Café

1. Unmatched value – for £19.95, you’ll enjoy a gourmet experience that rivals fine‑dining, yet with a relaxed, sociable atmosphere.

2. Historic charm meets modern flair –soak up the Art Deco grandeur and sea‑view elegance while savouring bold, contemporary curry creations.

3. Star studded legacy – walk in the footsteps of Hollywood legends and generations of Bournemouth families— history’s glamour meets curry comfort.

4. Flavours that stay with you – from the coast fresh oysters and scallops to the decadent steak and divine chocolate tart, each dish showcases top tier ingredients and flawless preparation.

A Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Adventure - interactive family exhibition and trail

Mottisfont, Hampshire: 19 July to 2 November 2025

‘Never say “no” to adventures. Always say “yes”, otherwise you’ll lead a very dull life’

- Commander Pott, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

This summer, step into the exciting adventures of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the National Trust’s Mottisfont in Hampshire, which celebrates the 60th anniversary of this famous children’s classic written by Ian Fleming.

Fleming’s tale about a magical flying car and its crimebusting exploits was originally written as a bedtime story for his son Caspar. It sparked the imagination of millions of children and later inspired the 1968 film cowritten by Roald Dahl.

An extraordinary new exhibition has transformed Mottisfont’s galleries into colourful, creative spaces bursting with large-scale visuals, interactive displays and artwork at children’s eye level.

For the first time, all the original illustrations for the book, by legendary children’s artist John Burningham, are on show. Burningham’s bold and expressive images, featuring daring escapes, eccentric characters and wild inventions, helped define the spirit of the story.

Characters from the book are introduced, including fearsome Joe the Monster’s gang of villainous robbers, inventor Commander Caractacus Pott, his wife Mimsie and their adventurous twins, Jeremy and Jemima. There are cosy reading areas for kids to snuggle with a book

and a mini ‘cave’ where they can peer into ‘peepo’ boxes to spy gangsters on the run and Chitty speeding through a tunnel.

A life-size custom-built Chitty car front end, complete with GEN 11 numberplate and vintage-style red seats, made by local props company Tin Shed, is ready for family photos.

The exhibition also displays the work of contemporary artists who have reimagined Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for a new generation. Steve Antony’s funny and colourful scenes were commissioned for a picture book adaptation by Peter Bently. Thomas Gilbert’s illustrations add a dramatic energy to a 60th anniversary edition of the book with its original text.

How Chitty was ‘invented’

Older visitors can dive into the remarkable story behind the book and learn about the author’s writing process. Fleming was an avid car enthusiast and took his inspiration for the story from the aero-engined racing cars built by racing driver and engineer Count Louis Zborowski and powered by aircraft engines. The cars were known as Chitty Bang Bangs, thought to be because of the sound the engines made.

Fleming wrote the book as a bedtime story to read to his son Caspar, while convalescing after a heart attack. It was serialised by the Daily Express and later run as a comic strip. On show are rare pages from Fleming’s original typescript, Express newspaper cuttings and letters between Fleming and Amherst Villiers, a British automotive engineer and artist who advised Fleming on how the car might be designed.

Another exhibition highlight is the fragile cardboard model built by illustrator John Burningham – another car enthusiast - to help him visualise how the car would look when in flight.

“One of the problems I had… was how to make the car fly in the way it does in the story. I got round this by making a model of the car and suspending it from the ceiling on fishing line. Then I took photos of the car from many different angles.”

- John Burningham, 2009

Ian Fleming and Maud Russell

In the house visitors can learn more about the great friendship between Ian Fleming and Mottisfont’s former owner Maud Russell. They met in the early 1930s and Maud became a mentor and discreet guiding presence in Fleming’s life. In June 1945 Maud wrote in her diary: “he is my oldest friend, a strong link with my past life and the one person I could say anything to – and often do”.

Maud and her husband Gilbert were instrumental in developing Fleming’s career, including the creation of his other famous character, James Bond. Fleming often stayed at Mottisfont, meeting influential, highprofile figures at lively weekend gatherings. When he expressed an interest in secret service work Maud and Gilbert used their influence to secure him a job in Naval Intelligence – war work that greatly influenced his later writing. Maud also helped Fleming finance the purchase of his Jamaican writing retreat, Goldeneye, where the Bond novels were born.

Chitty activity trail

A Chitty activity trail takes families through the gallery and gardens as they uncover clues and complete games inspired by the book’s themes and characters. Help catch the gangsters on the target board challenge and find out

what’s hidden in their secret lair. Visit Monsieur Bon-Bon’s sweet cart to create musical sweets and draw a magical Chitty car to enter Mottisfont’s competition, judged by Chitty illustrators Steve Antony and Thomas Gilbert.

Storytelling sessions

Professional storyteller Amanda Kane-Smith from Merry-go-Round Storytelling brings Chitty to life, with high-energy, interactive performances featuring playful props and musical instruments, including a car horn for kids to hoot. Storytelling sessions are free and will run on 20 & 30 July, 6, 16, 20 August, 3 & 7 September. Visit www.mottisfont.org.uk for times.

Helen Potts, Mottisfont exhibition curator and visitor experience manager: “Mottisfont is the place for a real family adventure this summer. We’ve focused on bringing the marvellous Chitty story to life in ways that encourage kids to explore their imaginations and that celebrate invention. The large visuals and low-hung artworks make the exhibition spaces really inviting, and outside there’s loads of room to run around hunting for clues and solving our trail challenges.

“There’s lots for adults to enjoy too. The original book is 60 years old now and will hold happy childhood memories for many of our visitors. It’s equally lovely to be able to tell the story of Ian and Maud. This really is a summer experience that will appeal to all ages.”

A Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Adventure exhibition and activity trail, Mottisfont, Hampshire, 19 July to 2 November. Gardens open 10am-5pm, house open 114.30pm. Normal property admission only. Suitable for ages 5+ years.
