LOCAL HOSPICE CHOSEN AS OFFICIAL CHARITY PARTNERS OF SEAFOOD & SOUNDS FESTIVAL

Forest Holme Hospice is delighted to announce that it has been chosen as the official charity partners of this year’s Seafood and Sounds festival, which takes place in Poole over the weekend of September 13th and 14th.

The hospice, which provides palliative and end-of life-care and support to more than 1,500 people each year across Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, will be represented at the festival by both staff and volunteers, who will also be participating in the event’s seafood themed opening parade.

Seafood and Sounds, which is now in its third year, is the brainchild of five Poole business owners - City Cruises, The Custom House, The Poole Arms, Saint Tropez Restaurant and Truly Scrumptious – to celebrate locally produced seafood and Dorset musicians across the locations of Old Town Poole, The Quay and Falkland Square.

YOUNG MUSICIANS STRIKE A CHORD AT ORCHESTRAL TRAINING DAY EVENT

Young talent took centre stage at Lighthouse Poole on Sunday as sixty of the region’s most talented young musicians came together in a unique Orchestral Training Day organised by Poole Society for Young Musicians.

The charity enlisted the help of BSO assistant conductor Enyi Okpara as well as some highly qualified local professional orchestral musicians and teachers to take sectionals at the start of the day and play side by side in performance. All the young people play to Grade 5 or above and were split into strings, wind/brass and percussion groups to work on four short pieces of music and one symphonic movement.

“The Training Day is all about developing musicianship skills and performing alongside professional musicians in some great repertoire,” explains Alison Kay, a

professional viola player and founderdirector of Poole Society for Young Musicians.

“Enyi lodges with a member of our music committee so he had heard about our work with young people and introduced himself to me. He said he wanted to do something to help, and the Orchestral Training Day took shape – he has been so supportive.

“And of course we are very grateful to Lighthouse for working with us on this project.”

Alison, who was awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours for her services to the Arts and young people, is passionate about music education and founded PSYM in 2010 to increase performance opportunities for young people. The Society organises a range of events including masterclasses, rehearsals and workshops, as well as chamber performances, and boasts a broad mix of professional musicians among its coaching staff. As director of PSYM, Alison also works closely with BCP’s SoundStorm music education agency.

WHERE CAN

YOU SEE A MERMAID THIS SPRING? ALL LOCATIONS REVEALED FOR THE GREAT TAIL TRAIL

Julia’s House children’s hospice, organiser of The Great Tail Trail, has revealed the locations you can see all its colourful mermaid tail sculptures across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) this spring.

The trail, which is completely free to enjoy, will be making its mer-mazing debut from 5 April, featuring 45 larger than life artist-designed sculptures and 43 ‘Tiny Tails’ decorated by schools and local groups as part of a learning programme.  From beachside locations at Sandbanks, Boscombe Pier, Canford Cliffs and Southbourne to town centre spots at Poole Quay, Bournemouth International Centre, the Vitality Stadium and Castlepoint, you won’t be able to miss the giant mermaids as they bring a splash of colour and creativity across BCP.

The Julia’s House charity shops at Creekmoor, Westbourne, Wallisdown, Poole and Christchurch will be hosting Tiny Tails and selling maps and merchandise too, once the trail is underway.

THE

STRATEGIC RELOCATION FOR GALLAGHER’S MARINE TEAM

Insurance broker Gallagher has brought colleagues together by relocating its 20-strong Marine team into its local office in Poole. Gallagher’s Marine team was previously based in Poole Quay for eight years and has continued to support clients across the local industry by delivering insurance and risk management services. The team will now join 22 Gallagher colleagues in its Cabot Lane office.

You can navigate your way around the trail with The Great Tail Trail app from Google Play or the App Store. You’ll be able to tick off each mermaid tail as you find it, collect rewards from the generous sponsors, vote for your favourite tail and share fun photographs of yourself exploring the trail.

Once the trail ends, the sculptures will be sold at a Grand Auction that is hoped will raise thousands of pounds for Julia’s House, so it can continue to provide its specialist care for local children with life-limiting and complex conditions and support their families.

If you’d like to become the owner of a oneoff piece of mer-mazing artwork you can bid for your favourite tail at a grand auction held at the Italian Villa, Compton Acres on 20 June. All proceeds from the auction will help Julia’s House continue its lifeline of care for children and families across Dorset.

The Great Tail Trail goes live across BCP from 5 April to 1 June and you can discover more information by visiting greattailtrail.co.uk

Gallagher has a long-established presence in Poole and supports many businesses in the area.  As well as having strong relationships with the local marine community, its insurance specialists also support businesses in a range of sectors including manufacturing, construction, hospitality and real estate. In addition, Gallagher has an extensive Private Client offering, which caters to high-net-worth individuals, and provides a range of services including classic car, fine art, highend jewellery and property insurance.

The office move will enable Gallagher’s teams to work together more effectively together and enhance the services they provide to clients. By bringing colleagues under one roof, clients will benefit from having greater access to Gallagher’s specialist knowledge and product offering. Following this strategic office move, Gallagher’s Marine clients will continue to be supported by the same team that knows and understands their business.

ROARING WITH EXCITEMENT AS TWO RARE BIG CATS ARRIVE AT MARWELL ZOO

Marwell Zoo is thrilled to welcome two new big cats to the 140-acre park! A beautiful female snow leopard, Zaya, and a magnificent male Amur tiger, Pasha, are settling into their new habitats, bringing even more excitement to the zoo this year.

Zaya, a one-year-old snow leopard, arrived on Thursday 27 February 2025, from The Big Cat Sanctuary. Born on 1 July 2023, she grew up alongside her brother, Attan. At Marwell, Zaya will join male snow leopard, Warjun.

In January 2024, Zaya underwent an eye operation due to an infection. However, thanks to the expert care from the specialist vets at The Big Cat Sanctuary, her eye was successfully treated and other than some discolouration which you may notice, she has fully recovered.

Snow leopards are listed as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List, with an estimated 3,000 mature individuals in the wild.

Pasha, a 5-year-old Amur tiger has also arrived at Marwell from Port Lympne Safari Park. He has settled in quickly and has been spotted interacting with Marwell’s resident female Amur tiger, Valentina, through the fence line between their habitats. Amur tigers are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with approximately 3,000 mature individuals in the wild.

Both cats are part of the EAZA Ex-situ Breeding Programme (EEP) and will play an essential role in their conservation breeding programmes, ensuring healthy and thriving populations.

As well as the exciting new arrivals, Marwell Zoo has plenty in store for visitors this year! This Easter Holiday, embark on an adventure with their Around the World in 80 species event. Plus, a new café open to the public, The Keeper’s Kitchen, is set to open in May 2025.

Marwell Zoo is home to more than 140 rare and endangered species, and by visiting Marwell, you are contributing to the vital conservation projects here in the United Kingdom and across the globe.

An

The heart of your home: 2025’s must-have kitchen trends

Expert

advice from K en House, Designers & Suppliers of the “WOW” fa or since 1987

The kitchen has always been the heart of the home, but in 2025, it’s taking centre stage like never before.

Whether you’re dreaming of a sleek, modern space or a warm, inviting hub for family gatherings, this year’s trends are all about blending luxury, functionality, and sustainability. At Kitchen House on Castle Lane, Bournemouth, they don’t just follow trends—they help you create a kitchen that’s built to last, with expert advice from Gary and the team who have 68 years of experience designing quality kitchens.

Seamless design & hidden storage

Minimalism is still going strong, but 2025 takes it to the next level with handleless cabinetry, integrated appliances, and smart storage solutions. Think hidden larders, pop-up power sockets, and cleverly concealed co ee stations—keeping your kitchen clutter-free without sacrificing functionality.

Natural materials & earthy tones

This year, we’re seeing a shift towards warm, natural materials. Stone countertops, real wood veneers, and matte finishes in shades of taupe, olive green, and soft terracotta create a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere. Pair these with subtle metallic accents for a touch of elegance.

Smart kitchens & energy e iciency

Technology is revolutionising kitchens, with AI-assisted ovens, voice-controlled lighting, and fridges that help you plan meals. But it’s not just about convenience— energy-e icient appliances and sustainable materials are key, helping homeowners reduce their carbon footprint while enjoying cutting-edge design.

Personalised touches & timeless luxury Luxury is in the details. From custom cabinetry to unique splashback designs, personalisation is a huge trend. German kitchens are renowned for their precision and quality, o ering bespoke solutions that blend style and durability seamlessly.

Statement islands & social spaces

The kitchen island has evolved from a simple prep area to the centre of social life. This year, expect oversized islands with bold stone finishes, integrated seating, and builtin wine fridges—perfect for entertaining or enjoying a morning co ee.

Renters rights bill update

On 22 April 2025, the Committee Stage will commence in the House of Lords. This phase involves a detailed examination of the bill, where members will debate proposed amendments. The discussions are expected to be extensive, with additional sessions potentially scheduled to cover all aspects thoroughly.

Following the Committee Stage, the bill will proceed to the Report Stage, likely in May or June 2025, and then to the Third Reading. If approved, it will receive Royal Assent, becoming the Renters’ Rights Act 2025.

STAMP DUTY INCREASES?

From the 1st April stamp duty thresholds are rising. All properties above £125,000 will be subject to stamp duty (reduced from £250,000). For first time buyers this will be £300,000 (reduced from £425,000.

This has resulted in a rush of activity with buyers and solicitors working hard to complete prior to the 31st March 2025.

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO AML AND FINANCIAL SANCTIONS REGULATIONS

From the 14th of May 2025, significant changes will be introduced affecting all letting agents in England. These changes are designed to enhance compliance with financial sanctions regulations and align responsibilities of lettings agents with those of estate agents.

Letting agents will be required to implement robust systems to verify the identities of landlords and tenants (which are already in place with letting agents), but to also additionally check them against the consolidated sanctions list at the appropriate stages of the rental process. Any suspicions of financial breaches must be reported.

PICTURED ABOVE
Sharon Canning. Owner of Move On Sales and Lettings

These measures are part of the UK’s efforts to combat money laundering and other illicit financial activities. Non- compliance will lead to significant legal consequences and therefore vital that letting agents are looking at the training of all staff.

LEASEHOLD REFORM

The government plans to consult in summer 2025 on valuation rates used to calculate enfranchisement premiums. This consultation aims to address perceived flaws in the Leasehold Reform Act, with potential primary legislation to follow, impacting leasehold property transactions and valuations

IN THE COURTS

Electrical Certificate

A landlord has been fined for failing to comply with the Electrical Safety Standards Regulations introduced in 2020. This case was one of the first in England under these regulations, which empower local authorities to fine landlords who don’t adhere to electrical safety standards.

Overcrowding

2 joint Landlords were fined £100,000 after a fire in their overcrowded East London flat, resulting in a tenant’s death. The flat, licensed for three people, had up to 23 occupants, highlighting severe overcrowding and inadequate safety measures.

AN OFFER OF ADVICE

It’s clear that the lettings industry is undergoing significant changes, and staying ahead of the curve is becoming

more difficult for landlords managing properties on their own. The proposed reforms, alongside the growing complexity of legal requirements, make it increasingly important for landlords to seek expert advice and services.

A single fine from the council or legal mishap can end up being far more expensive than the ongoing costs of engaging a professional agent. A good agent doesn’t just manage the day-to-day responsibilities; they also help landlords navigate the everchanging regulations, ensuring they stay compliant and avoid costly errors.

The team at Move On are committed to continuous learning and monitoring industry updates shows the value of professional property management. For landlords, that peace of mind and expertise can be incredibly valuable.

Coastal Retreat Reimagined Your

Nestled

Three floors have already been fully refurbished, with the 1st floor almost complete and the ground floor set to undergo its update in the near future.

How to refresh your home for springtime with a seasonal vibe

Master the mix of uplifting updates, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

It’s the moment for renewal, breathing new life into your space and reinventing furnishings by switching out wintry textiles for free-spirited decorative accessories and airy accents.

Indeed, with 2025 coming into full swing, now is the time to refresh your home for spring, highlights Alysha Alli, group interior designer at Redrow.

“This season is all about embracing new materials, bold designs and sustainable innovations that enhance both style and functionality,” says Alli.

“Whether you’re looking to introduce eco-friendly elements, experiment with vibrant colours, or create a seamless indoor-outdoor flow, these key trends will help you transform your space.”

Here are her style notes to put you on the front foot…

Embracing alternative materials

Sustainability is shaping the future of home design, with a rise in untreated natural materials such as wood, cork, and bamboo, underlines Alli.

“Zero-waste production is also gaining traction, as designers transform leftover materials into beautiful, eco-friendly furniture.”

LEFT
Charming Garden Setting with Bistro Table, LED Candles & Lanterns, Lights4Fun | Lights4Fun/PA

To bring this approach into your home, she says to opt for statement pieces that contrast beautifully with their surroundings. “Think a reclaimed wood table in a sleek modern space, or recycled metal light fixture adding edge to a cosy, rustic setting.”

And while sustainably crafted pieces may come with a higher price tag, they offer “superior quality, longevity, and one-of-a-kind character that mass-produced items simply cannot match,” notes Alli.

“Plus, you will be making an eco-friendly choice while supporting independent artisans and small businesses.”

A playful approach to the basics

Everyday essentials are given a vibrant refresh with bold colours and adaptable designs…

Alli says modular seating, adjustable shelving and stools with built-in storage combine practicality with personality, making them perfect for busy households.

“Want to maximise a family space? Consider multifunctional furniture like extendable dining tables for gatherings, or foldaway desks for homework and crafts.”

“Creating dedicated zones such as a cosy reading nook, playful activity area or flexible workspace can make your home more adaptable, while maintaining a fun and inviting aesthetic,” she says..

Playing with perceptions

This year, expect to see more transparency, reflection, and futuristic finishes used to create sleek, modern spaces, outlines Alli. Moreover, she says mirrored surfaces, glass furniture, and responsibly sourced acrylic add depth and sophistication without overwhelming a room.

ABOVE

Nikko Folding Dining Table in Smoke by Willow’s Collection, Sweetpea & Willow | Sweetpea & Willow/PA

“A well-placed mirror can instantly open a space and amplify natural light, while translucent décor – such as vases, pendant lights, and glistening finishes – add subtle visual interest.

“For a contemporary edge, pair these elements with high-shine metals like chrome or brushed gold,” suggests the interiors expert.

“Prefer a softer touch? Balance modern accents with plush fabrics, warm wood tones, or natural stone for a chic, yet inviting, look.”

She continues: “For an extra pop, introduce ombre hues, glowing accents, or bold statement pieces featuring graphic grains.”

Whether you fully embrace the trend or just add a few key pieces, it’s an effortless way to make your home feel fresh, airy, and stylish, suggests Alli.

Colour shifts… 2025 is all about colour confidence Rich, mood-boosting hues bring joy and energy into your space…

Say goodbye to muted tones and welcome in tropical brights such as zesty oranges, hyper-greens, and electric blues, enthuses Alli.

Not ready for a full-colour transformation? She says start small with vibrant cushions, a statement rug or accent wall. “Layer in colour-blocked furniture or bold accessories to make an impact without overwhelming your space,” advises Alli. “For a playful twist, glow-in-the-dark details, like neon signs or LED strips, add a sense of fun after dark.”

The key to getting it right? Alli says to balance bright tones with natural textures to keep things lively yet inviting.

Seamless indoor-outdoor living

“As the seasons change, it’s time to break down barriers between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a home that feels light, airy and connected to nature,” advises Alli.

“Open-plan layouts with large sliding or bi-fold doors allow for effortless flow, making it easier than ever to enjoy brighter days and warmer evenings.”

Not patio weather yet? She suggests bringing the outdoors in with rattan furniture, linen textiles and botanical prints that echo your garden.

Once the temperature finally rises, she says don’t be afraid of taking interior comforts outside. “Cosy throws, soft lighting, and weather-resistant rugs can transform a patio or balcony into an inviting retreat.”

The secret to seamless indoor-outdoor living? “A cohesive colour palette and natural textures that tie both spaces together,” says Alli, “creating a relaxed, harmonious vibe all year round.”

Planning a budget motorhome or campervan break?

Here’s all you need to know...

Save money on fuel and take advantage of great deals to keep costs low, say the experts.

Providing the comfort of a hotel with the freedom of camping in a tent, motorhome and campervan holidays are the perfect compromise for freedom seekers who crave modern conveniences. Prices are favourable too, with deals from as low as £59 per night.

But with fuel prices predicted to rise, it’s important to plan trips carefully. From travelling off-peak to refuelling at dawn or dusk, experts share tips on how to save money.

Have a plan

“Think about how many people are travelling, the route you plan to take, what storage you may need and how comfortable you are driving to determine what size of vehicle you need,” recommends Leanne Cromie, marketing manager for rental sites Bunk Campers and Just Go Motorhomes.

“Holiday makers can benefit from great rates for travelling April to June or September to October whilst still benefiting from the bright nights across the UK and Ireland.”

Pick the right petrol provider and monitor fuel consumption

“RAC Fuel Watch monitors British wholesale and pump prices daily to point motorists towards the cheapest rates,” says Max Schmidt, head of aggregate motorhome and caravan holiday site CamperDays.

“Right now, Tesco offers on average the cheapest supermarket petrol, while drivers can also secure good deals from non-supermarket petrol brands like Essar or Shell.

“Early in the morning or late at night is the best time to buy fuel as prices tend to be cheaper at these times. This is because fuel pumps dispense volume-calibrated fuel, meaning you gain a fraction more petrol for your money.”

Pack efficiently

“With the absence of luggage restrictions, there’s a tendency to overpack on a road trip, but just because you can pack your life into a campervan, doesn’t mean you should,” warns Schmidt. “Lower weight undoubtedly reduces fuel burn, leading to savings.

“Other ways to reduce weight in a campervan is to keep the freshwater tank as low as possible while driving. Fresh water is readily available at campsites and service stations for regular top ups as required.”

Use the AC wisely

“Turning on the air conditioning when natural air is readily available outside seems counterproductive, but rolling the windows down doesn’t always lead to savings,” says Schmidt. “At fast speeds, such as when

driving on the motorway, driving with the windows open causes drag, eating unnecessarily into the fuel reserves.

“Keep windows and doors shut and AC on moderate to strike the right balance between comfort and efficiency. At slower speeds, however, it’s advised to switch off the AC and roll the windows down, allowing a slow and steady breeze to pass through the vehicle.”

Try a motorhome relocation deal

Motorhome relocation deals are a great way to enjoy a driving holiday on budget. Rental sites Bunk Campers and Just Go both offer motorhome relocation deals across the UK and Ireland from £5 per night.

“Every April, we hold a motorhome factory relocation trip from Italy to the UK,” advises Cromie. “Collect a brand new campervan or motorhome from Tuscany, Italy and enjoy a 10-night driving holiday back to the UK or Ireland from £525.”

Recalling a golden age of Alpine glamour in St Moritz

Away from the slopes, there is a sensational world of ice bathing, tobogganing and some oldschool glitz, says Roz McKenzie.

Breaking through the icy surface of Lake St Moritz is proving to be a challenge.

It’s around 9am and my hair has a crystallised coating as it’s -6C outside. For several days, I’ve been dreading the thought of submerging myself in the freezing waters –worried about the pain, the possibility of a heart attack from cold water shock, mud between my toes and fishes swimming around my feet.

But I’ve been told this is the star attraction in a winter destination that shimmers as brightly as the frost sparkling on trees.

Wearing a robe, swimming costume, woolly hat, gloves and hiking boots, I’ve trekked 300m around this beautiful lake surrounded by soaring snowy mountains, woods and the town of St Moritz along one bank.

Bracing myself, I don wetsuit shoes, ditch the robe and clamber down to the water’s edge. And then I’m in, up to my knees.

While it’s incredibly cold, I’m surprised not to feel any pain. Kneeling down further, the water now up to my shoulders, I keep my hands out and arms stretched. Alex – my butler at the nearby Carlton Hotel – reminds me to breathe and focus on the surrounding nature.

Carlton St Moritz | Carlton St Moritz/PA

RIGHT
The

My mind clears and I am calm. I notice how clear the lake is as I spot the pebbles under my feet.

Before I know it, I’ve been in for 90 seconds (the maximum time for beginners). I hop out with renewed vigour as I feel a hot adrenaline rush burst through my body.

Synonymous with celebrities and millionaires, St Moritz kickstarted winter tourism in Switzerland 150 years ago. Since then, the town with its trademark sun logo has hosted two Olympic games and developed into a thriving ski resort where being seen is as important as the winter sports.

Originally built for Tsar Nicholas II as a summer residence, the 111-year-old Carlton Hotel embodies the glitz and glamour of the destination.

Everything here is about unwinding and connecting with nature. All 60 opulent rooms and suites are southfacing with bewitching views of the lake and peaks of the Engadin Valley.

Rosalind McKenzie ice bathing | Rosalind McKenzie/PA
The Bel Etage at the Carlton St Moritz | Carlton St Moritz/PA
The fondue gondala | Carlton St Moritz/PA

Still brimming with endorphins, I head straight to the Carlton’s deluxe spa to defrost in its warm, bubbling indoor/outdoor pool.

As I get in, there is an immense tingle from my feet to my knees, followed by goosebumps. I breathe in the Alpine crisp air and gaze at the wintry countryside through steaming effervescing waters.

Back inside, the spa boasts a series of saunas and steam rooms with varying temperatures and an array of sublime treatments. Later I experience the Moving Mountains massage – where my feet are washed in Alpine salt and rosemary, before a dreamy hot stones massage from head to toe.

Designed by Carlo Rampazzi, the hotel’s interiors are extravagant and flamboyant. The light-flooded Bel Etage has two historic roaring fires and luxurious sofas with gigantic windows framing the tranquil Alps.

Despite it receiving the highest award Michelin can offer (three Keys), the hotel has a relaxed and fun

ambience. The Carlton Bar drinks menu offers a list of Instagrammable cocktails and there is the quirky Fondue Gondola experience – which involves sitting in an outside Gondola, dipping bread, potatoes and pickles into a boiling five-cheese fondue.

There are also two restaurants – the Grand Restaurant and the two Michelin starred restaurant Da Vittorio. Food is also served on the glorious Sun Terrace.

Feeling invincible after my ice bathing session, I head to the floodlit 6km Preda-Burgün sled run. The start point of Preda is not accessible by car. Instead sledders must get there via the world heritage Rhaetian railway – a magical train journey through deep gorges, tunnels and over multiple viaducts.

The tobogganing track is the Albula pass road, closed for winter, which descends 400m to the town of Bürgen. Although ‘family friendly’, it’s still incredibly fast, with tight corners and steep drops. It is possible to spend a whole day doing this as there are special trains that run from Bürgen back to Preda to have another go.

Other more sedate activities include a traditional horse carriage ride around the lake and woods, a guided tour of St Moritz and ice skating.

Lastly, there is the opportunity to do some fantastic people watching.

I try to spot a celebrity in the main town where streets are packed with designer shops. One afternoon, I have lunch up the mountain watching the skiers on the Corviglia while quaffing champagne and feasting on local delicacies at the Salastrains restaurant.

But ultimately – no matter how big your budget or claim to fame – everybody in St Moritz is made to feel like a star.

How to plan your trip

Carlton Hotel St. Moritz (carlton-stmoritz.ch) has B&B rooms from CHF 880/£777 per night based (two sharing), with CHF 100/£88 food and beverage voucher per adult per day.

Great gins and vodka to put the va-va-voom into spring cocktails, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

Sometimes it’s hard to pinpoint why we love to capitalise on a cocktail…and tease our tastebuds with a sapid spirit. Is it because we like to veer away from a glass of vino come springtime – and appreciate the core aromas and taste of juniper berries in a gin; or grainy character of a vodka?

And then fix a concoction of notable complexity by adding a mixer, a menagerie of ingredients to amp up the flavour profile, or pimp up a classic pour.

Either way, here’s what’s causing a stir and deserves a place on your bar cart…

Penrhos Wonky Raspberry Gin, £30, 70cl, Penrhos Spirits

The first thing that strikes you about this award-winning gin is the recycled aluminium bottle, playing a vital role in reducing its carbon footprint. But what about this delectable infusion of perfectly edible, imperfect raspberries?

It’s delightfully fresh and fruity with a good measure of tart raspberry flavour and spicy kick on the tail. Top with aromatic tonic, raspberries and mint to drink in the sun.

Seasonal spirits and stylish serves to rustle up now

Silent Pool Gin, £43, 70cl, Silent Pool

The power of girls-only education

Nurturing future leaders at Talbot Heath School

In a world where gender equality remains a work in progress, all-girls education plays a pivotal role in creating a space where young women can thrive, both academically and personally. Talbot Heath School, a girls’ school offering education from age 2 to 18, is a prime example of how a single-sex learning environment fosters confidence, resilience, and leadership in young women.

An environment free from gender stereotypes

At Talbot Heath School, students are free from the societal pressures and gender biases that often arise in co-educational settings. This allows them to focus on their strengths, ambitions, and passions without the distractions of conforming to traditional gender roles. Girls feel more empowered to pursue interests in subjects that are often male-dominated, such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). At Talbot Heath, girls regularly excel in science, technology, and mathematics, gaining the skills and confidence to pursue these fields at university and beyond.

This supportive environment also nurtures leadership qualities, as every leadership role — from student parliament to club leader — is held by a girl. This experience fosters a sense of self-assurance and independence that serves them well in their future careers.

A curriculum tailored for girls’ development

Talbot Heath School’s approach to education is designed to meet the specific learning styles and developmental needs of girls. Research shows that girls often thrive in collaborative, discussion-based learning environments, where they feel safe to express their ideas and take intellectual risks. The school’s small class sizes and emphasis on holistic education ensure that every student receives the individual attention they need to reach their full potential.

In addition, Talbot Heath integrates outdoor learning and wellbeing initiatives into the curriculum, such as its Wellbeing Wednesdays, where girls participate in

activities like mindfulness, self-defence, and creative arts. These programs help girls manage stress, develop emotional resilience, and build a well-rounded sense of self.

Building

resilient and compassionate young women

One of the key benefits of an all-girls education at Talbot Heath is the focus on personal growth and emotional wellbeing. The school understands that young women face unique challenges in today’s world and provides a nurturing environment where they can develop resilience, compassion, and confidence. Talbot Heath’s new wellbeing centre, “The Oasis,” offers a dedicated space for students to reflect, relax, and recharge.

Preparing for the future

By educating young women in an environment that prioritises their growth and empowers them to take on leadership roles, Talbot Heath School is not just preparing girls for academic success — it is preparing them for life. Here, they learn to embrace their strengths, overcome challenges, and pursue their dreams without limits. An all-girls education at Talbot Heath nurtures future leaders, ready to make their mark on the world with confidence and compassion. Talbot Heath

Let me tell the story of tonight…

Hamilton, Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, 24 March – 26 April 2025

I feel fortunate to have seen many iconic theatre productions, but Hamilton may be the one I’ve been eagerly anticipating for what feels like the longest time. I enter Mayflower Theatre in a state of elation, unable to contain my excitement about watching Lin-Manuel Miranda’s genius creation play out live on stage. As I take my seat and admire the set design, the atmosphere in the theatre is electric with the feeling that we are all about to witness something spectacular. For a fleeting moment, I worry, “Will it live up to the hype?” But from the opening note, there is no doubt in my mind that this is going to be an unforgettable experience!

For anyone unfamiliar with Hamilton, it is the story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and helped shape the very foundations of the America we know today. Created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the score blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B, and Broadway – the story of America then, as told by America now.

Hamilton is nothing short of a lyrical masterpiece, woven into a hard-hitting story of love, loss, political ambition, and pride to depict a poignant time in American history. The fluid nature of the show captivates the audience as the songs flow seamlessly from one to another, creating a memorable narrative that leaves us a little more informed than when we arrived.

Without seeming to pause to take a breath, the cast endlessly deliver a passionate performance through flawless vocals and perfectly executed dance moves. The attention to detail defies expectation – everywhere you look on stage there is something to capture your attention, from a member of the ensemble performing expressive choreography to King George popping up unexpectedly in the background!

The set design is a technical wonder, with a turning circle on stage which adds to the natural flow of the performance. The cast glide on and off it completely unfazed, as it’s used to add depth to the storytelling.

Marley Fenton appears born to play the lead role of Alexander Hamilton. He takes to it with undeniable commitment, drawing us all into this charismatic character. His masterful execution of the complex lyrics is simply stunning. As we watch the character grow and develop, we’re taken on a journey with him and can’t help but feel both his joy and pain — even bringing me to tears at times. Along with his fellow cast members, he injects a lovely touch of humour amongst the seriousness of the subject, adding a light-hearted feel to our history lesson.

Billy Nevers’ dedication to the portrayal of Aaron Burr is to be admired. Creating the on-stage rivalry between himself and Hamilton, we watch as he depicts Burr slowly unravelling before our eyes, overcome by jealousy and resentment.

A sense of female empowerment is brought to the performance as the Schuyler sisters take to the stage to make themselves known! Eliza Hamilton, played by Roshani Abbey, delivers a heartfelt, emotional performance in her unwavering love and devotion to Alexander Hamilton. She sings straight from the heart, and you feel every word. Her beautiful delivery of some of the most heartbreaking moments in the show left me unable to hold back the tears. Chasity Crisp embodies a tenacious Angelica Schuyler with passion and poise, stunning us with her exquisite vocal range. She is a true talent, commanding the stage with her presence. Naomi Katiyo not only plays Peggy Schuyler but also takes on a secondary role as Maria Reynolds, with her rich, soulful voice bringing a quiet intensity to her moments on stage.

BELOW

Showcasing their versatility as performers, KM Drew Boateng, Ashley J. Daniels, and Shak Mancel James all take on double roles during the performance, depicting different iconic historical characters including James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and John Laurens. You can’t help but get caught up in the passion of the lyrics as they skilfully deliver line after line without falter, bringing energy, charm, and distinct personality to each of their characters.

Akmed Junior Khemalai brings a magnetic presence to the stage in the iconic role of George Washington. Portraying with ease the importance of this character, he regales us with authority, grace, and rich vocals that reflect the wisdom of a true leader.

One of the most highly anticipated characters of the show is, of course, King George. Louis Maskell owns the stage as he delivers a hilarious and delightfully unhinged performance of the power-crazed King. He holds the spotlight with ease as he brilliantly narrates his perspective. His comic timing is superb through each subtle move and gesture, whilst commanding the audience to silence with his stunning vocals — leaving us all in awe as we show our appreciation through cheers and elongated rounds of applause.

The entire cast deserved the resounding standing ovation they received at the end of the show. There was no small part, as you felt as captivated by the dynamic ensemble as you did by the leading roles.

As I rose to my feet in applause, overwhelmed by the sheer talent of everyone involved, I found myself wondering how I could possibly do this show justice. Hamilton is truly something that must be seen to be believed – and there’s still time to be in the room where it happens. The production runs at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton until 26th April. Don’t miss your chance to witness this musical masterpiece that will leave you absolutely speechless.

How to work the colour drenching trend

Create a colourful transformation with these expert tips, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

When it comes to before and after, saturating a space in a single colour brings depth, blurs the lines where walls, ceilings and furniture converge, and creates a sense of flow.

Moreover, it’s such a simple, decorative technique – no need to worry about clashing prints, having to think about scale, proportions of furnishings and making everything visually pleasing – it’s one shade fits all.

A versatile approach, the principal is to paint everything including skirting boards, radiators and window frames, and then build on your theme by incorporating textured elements.

The result? Whether you opt for deep, dramatic tones or soft, uplifting shades, colour drenching transforms interiors into visually stunning, mood-enhancing spaces.

Here’s how to achieve this trending look…

Set the mood

“Colour drenching is a brilliant way to create a space that feels truly cohesive and considered, but the key to having it feel harmonious lies in tapping into colour psychology,” highlights Patricia Gibbons, head of design at Sofa.com.

“Different shades evoke different moods, so think about how you want to feel in the space before committing to a single hue,” advises Gibbons.

RIGHT

Deep blues and rich greens bring a sense of calm and sophistication, perfect for bedrooms or living spaces designed for relaxation, suggests the designer.

“Warm terracottas and muted pinks add a welcoming, cocooning feel, ideal for social spaces. And if you want a burst of energy? Yellows and ochres can bring vibrancy and optimism to a home office or kitchen,” says Gibbons. “By layering tones within your chosen palette, you can fine-tune the atmosphere and create a space that truly reflects you.”

Drenched Den

Mara Rypacek Miller, founder of Industville, says: “Dens are a great place to apply colour drenching as this look naturally minimises visual distractions – and creates a calming atmosphere.

“When designing a colour-drenched den, it’s important to pay special attention to how light will interact with your chosen colour,” underlines Miller.

“Darker colours naturally absorb light, so the room will need more layered sources of illumination to feel cosy –whereas brighter colours will reflect light so require less.”

Miller also favours grounding colours such as forest green, and says its connection to nature means it offers an innate sense of comfort; and when paired with a carefully layered light scheme, this feeling is amplified.

“Statement light fixtures work particularly well with this look, casting ambient light through intricate, uncontrolled patterns and adding dimension to the space.

“Working with a gloss paint will further enhance this effect,” adds Miller. “Reflecting a warm glow, and fostering a soothing atmosphere that encourages relaxation and wellbeing at home.”

Bathed in beauty

As Helen Shaw, director of marketing (International) at Benjamin Moore, points out: “While there are many ways to colour drench, paint is one of the simplest and most impactful ways to achieve this look.”

Perfectly placed, walls and ceilings provide the ideal canvas and there aren’t any boundaries. Lines are softened, imperfections camouflaged, and the beauty of colour drenching is building on a block of colour; or incorporating several shades of your favourite hue to get the look.

Better still, if you sense brights are too much for your scheme, Shaw says using ‘quietly colourful’ hues like a moody blue will instantly transform a bathroom into a serene, immersive retreat.

“Unlike bold, saturated colours, these ‘in-between’ hues are rich with undertones, creating an immediate sense of ease – and subtly transforming a space throughout the day as light changes,” observes Shaw.

The Fitzrovia 3 Seater Sofa in Matt Velvet Wine Mix, from £899, Sofology | Sofology/PA
Sharps Manhattan Bedroom in Willow Green, made-tomeasure, from £2,000, Sharp | Sharps/PA

She continues: “Extending the colour drench onto ‘the fifth wall’ (the ceiling) of the bathroom not only enhances the sense of luxury and cohesion, but also blurs edges, creating the illusion of higher ceilings and a grander space.”

Forgotten furniture

There’s no reason to stop at walls when considering a colour-drenched living scheme, says Gisela Lancaster, head of buying at Sofology.

“A tastefully blended sofa in a similar shade makes a big visual impact whilst allowing other interesting design details to take a starring role,” says Lancaster.

The focal point of a living room, she says a sofa with a similar hue and bold design will elevate a space.

“Bringing tactile fabrics and sumptuous shapes into focus, with design elements such as curves and fluting enhancing the overall ambience of a room.”

Breathtaking bedrooms

When you’re ready to turn in for the night, taking a colour drenching approach to a bedroom scheme makes a lot of sense, highlights Rachal Hutcheson, national retail manager at Sharps.

“Not only does it maximise space, it helps create a cosy, cocoon-like atmosphere – enveloping you in a soothing environment and ultimately inducing sleep. We each spend a good proportion of time looking up whilst resting in a bedroom space, so why ignore the colour of your ceiling?” quips Hutcheson.

She says serene green tones and deep blues offer bold yet timeless options, whilst delivering a design statement that feels truly inviting. “Choosing an exact colour match for furniture isn’t necessary, with a similar hue providing additional visual interest without losing impact,” adds Hutcheson.

Hard water wreaking havoc? Aquatight has the solution

Living in the Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole (BCP) area comes with many perks—stunning coastline, vibrant communities, and unfortunately, some of the hardest water in the UK.

If your taps, appliances, and even your skin are feeling the effects, it’s time to consider a water softener. And when it comes to expert solutions, Aquatight is the name you can trust.

Why hard water is a hard problem

Hard water is packed with minerals like calcium and magnesium. While not harmful to drink, it wreaks havoc on your home. Limescale builds up in kettles, showerheads, and pipes, reducing efficiency and leading to costly repairs. Your appliances work harder, shortening their lifespan. And let’s not forget the impact on your skin and hair—hard water leaves them dry, irritated, and far from their best.

The

soft solution

A water softener from Aquatight removes these minerals, giving you softer, purer water throughout your home. That means:

• Longer-lasting appliances – Say goodbye to limescale damage.

• Better showers – Softer water means softer skin and shinier hair.

• Lower energy bills – Your boiler and washing machine will run more efficiently.

• Spotless surfaces – No more scrubbing to remove limescale stains.

The best water softener – now more affordable

Aquatight offers the best selling water softener on the market, the Kinetico Premier Compact, with flexible finance options for just £180 per month for 10 months. That means you can start enjoying the benefits of soft water right now—without the upfront cost.

Call aqua tight – your local water experts

Aquatight specialises in high-quality water softening and filtration systems tailored to homes in BCP. Their expert team will assess your water quality and install a system that keeps your household running smoothly.

So, if your household is a little too hard to handle, it’s time to get in touch. Call Aqua Tight today and experience the benefits of truly soft water.

We spoke to the experts at Colourstone to find out why resin bound surfaces are such a great investment and how they can enhance any property.

What makes resin bound surfaces such a great choice for homeowners?

Resin bound driveways offer a perfect blend of durability, aesthetics, and low maintenance. Unlike traditional materials like tarmac or block paving, resin bound surfaces provide a smooth, seamless finish that’s both hard-wearing and visually stunning. They’re also fully permeable, which means they allow water to drain naturally, reducing puddles and minimising the risk of flooding.

How does a resin bound driveway enhance a home’s appearance?

A resin bound driveway instantly elevates kerb appeal. With a wide range of natural stone colours and finishes available, homeowners can choose a style that complements their property, whether they prefer a modern, sleek look or something more traditional. The smooth surface also creates a high-end feel that sets a home apart from the rest.

What are the key benefits compared to other driveway materials?

One of the biggest advantages is its longevity—resin bound surfaces are resistant to cracks, weeds, and colour fading. Unlike block paving, which can become uneven over time, or concrete, which can crack, resin bound surfaces remain pristine with minimal upkeep. They’re also UV-resistant, meaning they won’t discolour in the sun, and they’re slipresistant, making them a safe option for driveways, patios, and pathways.

Why should homeowners choose Colourstone for their project?

We’re specialists in resin bound surfacing, offering expert installation and a commitment to quality. Our team works closely with customers to create bespoke designs that suit their property and lifestyle. We use only premium materials and ensure every installation meets the highest standards. How to maximise space in a small home

Style expert for The Ideal Home Show, Karen Walker, shares her expert tips and tricks of the trade.

When it comes to compact living areas, combining decorative pieces with practical considerations helps solve those pocket-sized decorating dilemmas.

Indeed, making the most out of a small home requires thoughtful planning and creative solutions, highlights Karen Walker, creative brand editor, Ideal Home Show.

Whether you’re living in a cosy studio apartment or compact house, Walker says there are plenty of ways to maximise your space – and create a home that feels functional, stylish, and spacious.

Here’s her expert insight on how to make the most of what you have…

Clever furniture choices

“When working with limited space, every piece of furniture should serve a purpose – or better yet, multiple purposes,” underlines Walker.

“Investing in multifunctional pieces is one of the best ways to maximise your square footage… look for items like sofa beds, ottomans with built-in storage, or extendable dining tables.” Moreover, she says dualpurpose sofas are perfect for small spaces, combining comfort with clever design.

Walker continues: “Wall-mounted furniture is another smart option – consider installing fold-down desks or wallmounted tables that can be stowed away when not in use.”

LEFT

Other innovative solutions such as a ‘study bed’, which transforms a room from a workspace in the day to a sleeping area at night, make them ideal for smaller bedrooms or home offices, suggests Walker.

Finally, she says to opt for furniture with a lightweight, airy design.

“Pieces with slim legs or open bases create the illusion of more space, by letting light flow through the room,” explains Walker.

“Glass or acrylic furniture, and even internal glass walls or doors can also make a small space feel less crowded, blending seamlessly into its surroundings and letting light flow through.”

Creative storage solutions

Storage can be a major challenge in small homes, but with a bit of ingenuity, Walker says you can find some great places to stash your belongings.

“Start by thinking vertically… walls, doors, and even ceilings can double as storage space.

“Underutilised areas such as under the stairs, beds or sofas, can also be turned into storage zones,” outlines Walker. “Use storage bins or vacuum-sealed bags to keep seasonal items, or less frequently used belongings tucked away but accessible.”

For kitchens and bathrooms, she says custom cabinetry can incorporate smart storage solutions like pull-out drawers, hidden organisers, and other options to make the most of every inch.

“Another great tip is to use storage that doubles as accessories,” reveals Walker.

“Woven baskets, trunks, or decorative boxes can be used to store items while adding a stylish touch to your home.”

“Hooks, racks, and over-the-door organisers are also lifesavers for small spaces, helping you keep everything from coats to kitchen utensils neatly organised,” she adds.

Design tricks to make your space feel bigger

Creating the illusion of a larger space is just as important as physically maximising it, notes Walker. “Start with a light and neutral colour palette… whites, creams, and pastels reflect light and make a room feel more airy.

“If you want to add some contrast, consider incorporating darker accents in furniture or accessories to create depth.”

She says mirrors and mirrored furniture are another powerful tool for visually expanding a space. “A large mirror placed opposite a window will bounce natural light around.”

In addition, Walker says to incorporate plenty of lighting to brighten every corner of your home. “Layered lighting – including ambient, task and accent – can help define different areas in an open-plan layout, while making the space feel more vibrant.”

However, avoid using heavy curtains or blinds that block light, she warns. “Instead, opt for sheer fabrics or leave windows bare to let in as much light as possible.”

Finally, keep your decor minimal and cohesive. “Too many patterns, colours, or accessories can make a small space feel chaotic and cramped.”

“Instead, focus on a few statement pieces and let clean lines and uncluttered surfaces create a sense of calm,” advises Walker.

XPENG LAUNCHES ITS NEW EV RANGE IN THE UK

XPENG, another new Chinese automotive company to our shores, has launched its official entry to the UK and started the presale of its first right-hand drive model. The all-electric mid-size coupe SUV, XPENG G6.

The company describes the UK as a crucial step in its international growth strategy. Not only has the UK become the largest EV market in Europe in 2024, but it is also one of the most significant right-hand-drive markets worldwide.

With nearly 50 years of experience in vehicle distribution, XPENG’s official distributor, the Midlands based International Motors, plans to open 20 dealerships across the UK in 2025.

With AI-driven advancements, XPENG says it aims to offer a more intuitive, safer, and highly customisable driving experience, enhancing personalisation for owners.

The company have showcased a line-up of vehicles, offering a glimpse into the future

of brand and encompassing a Coupe SUV, the G6, the G9 flagship SUV and the X9, a large seven-seater SUV.

As part of its UK debut, XPENG has opened orders for its highly anticipated G6 Ultra Smart Coupe SUV, with launch prices starting at £39,990 the competition amongst Chinese car makers here in the UK is certainly growing and XPENG’s first deliveries of the G6 will reach customers this month.

In January the company announced two strategic partnerships with Volkswagen and BP Pulse, to not only create a super-fast charging network but also to jointly explore cutting-edge solutions.

Fast. Stylish. You’ll be a blur on the road.

MORGAN PLUS FOUR – A SENSE OF MOTORING OCCASION

I wonder if HFS (Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan), when he founded the Morgan Motor Company in 1909, would ever have thought over 110 years later his company would still be here and have outlasted much bigger car makers. It would have also, I suspect, have amazed him at the latest high tech EV future in which his company is investing.

Indeed until 2019 the Morgan family still owned and controlled the company. I’m sure he would have liked that to have continued but realistically the small company needed outside investment to fund the new generation of cars that are now emerging.

The Plus Four has been an iconic model for the company, which is located in Malvern, and to the uninitiated looks largely unchanged from when it was launched back in 1950. However, under that aluminium body and ash frame lies some very modern mechanicals.

Morgan has used a variety of engines over the years but are largely known for their Ford and Rover power plants, and have also

used Fiat engines too. In the Plus Four it is a BMW 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged unit developing 255 bhp and completing the 0 to 62 mph sprint in a whisker over 5 seconds. Priced from £69,995 a slice of traditional British sporting craftsmanship is not cheap. However, you’re buying into something more than just a means of transport.

Few cars have more power to engender smiles and admiration than a Morgan, and few marques are as readily identifiable to even the most non-car people. It’s a fine line between matching modern safety, reliability and comfort standards while maintaining such an obvious harking back to a bygone and arguably more romantic motoring time, when driving was for pleasure and adventure rather than a necessity.

On the road the Plus Four doesn’t lack for power and performance with handling to match, it’s fair to say that the ride is on the firm side of firm so may not suit those looking for the ultimate in comfort and cossetting motoring.

On a nice sunny day, the Plus Four is a delight with the roof down, and you can leave the side screens in place, if the lowcut doors cause too much of a draught, without losing the open-air feel. Putting the roof back up is not the simple task of more modern machinery. It’s not as bad as you might imagine but definitely old fashioned and takes a few minutes.

The Plus Four is always going to be a high days and holidays car, even though you could quite easily use it on a daily basis. Its idiosyncrasies are part of its appeal and they not such that they would necessarily dissuade you from using the car.

I can think of lots a machinery costing more than the Morgan’s £70k price tag that doesn’t come within a continent’s reach of the enjoyment and sense of occasion the Morgan gives you every time you get behind the wheel. It’s a true delight!

KAMIQ DESIGN EDITION MODEL LAUNCHED

Škoda is building on the success of its Kamiq range by adding a new trim level to the line-up. The new Kamiq Design Edition.

The new trim grade, which has proved a popular choice in the recently updated Fabia range, is positioned between the existing SE Edition and SE L Edition models and takes the total number of trim options for Kamiq up to four. Created to appeal to design-conscious customers, the specification of the new Design Edition is aimed at delivering a striking look while maximising value for money.

Building on the specification of the Kamiq SE Edition, the new Design Edition is equipped with 17-inch Propus aero alloy wheels, black roof and door mirrors and privacy glass as standard. Inside, there are sports seats, cloth and microsuede upholstery, a threespoke sports steering wheel and red trim on the dashboard. Ambient lighting, black headlining and aluminium pedals complete the interior specification.

The new Kamiq Design Edition is available with two engines and three drivetrain options. The 1.0 TSI 95PS and 1.0 TSI 116PS engines feature a manual gearbox as standard with the higher output unit also available with a

seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox. The CO2 outputs range from 122g/km for the 1.0 TSI 116PS manual to 126g/km for the 1.0 TSI 116PS DSG. In terms of efficiency, the 1.0 TSI 95PS model returns 51.9mpg in combined driving while the 1.0 TSI 116PS manual has an official consumption figure of 52.3mpg. The range-topping 1.0 TSI 116PS DSG returns 50.6mpg.

Despite a generous specification, the new Kamiq Design Edition still represents value for money. Prices start from £25,855 for the 1.0 TSI 95PS model, rising to £28,185 OTR for the 1.0 TSI 116PS DSG model. First deliveries are expected in spring.

Reviewed Guildhall Tavern, Poole

A

feast worth loosening your belt for!

If there’s one thing we love, it’s great food. If there’s a second thing we love, it’s pretending we have selfcontrol when faced with great food. Spoiler: we don’t.

Enter Guildhall Tavern, Poole’s Michelin-recommended temple of seafood, steak, and buttery brilliance. It’s the kind of place where you tell yourself you’ll “just have a light dinner” and then find yourself elbow-deep in garlic butter, aggressively guarding the last scallop like a seagull at the beach.

And making sure the whole experience ran smoother than a béarnaise sauce was our fantastic hostess, Java. Part hospitality expert, part mind-reader, she had every table running like a well-oiled machine while making us feel like the only people in the restaurant. If service came with Michelin stars, she’d have a few.

Starters that had us reconsidering our life choices (in a good way)

We started strong with the twice-baked Barber’s 1833 vintage cheddar soufflé. Twice-baked, because once clearly wasn’t indulgent enough. This fluffy masterpiece was rich, cheesy, and so light it basically defied gravity. Add in the sweet, delicate Poole Bay crab, and suddenly, we weren’t just eating—we were having a moment.

Then came the grilled scallops in the shell, which arrived swimming in garlic and herb butter so good, we considered bottling it up and selling it on the black market. The scallops were juicy, perfectly cooked, and so delicious that we briefly debated whether it would be socially acceptable to lick the shells. (We decided against it, but only just.)

Mains that meant business

Next up: the dry-aged fillet steak, which was so beautifully cooked and tender that our knives were basically just for show. Paired with golden, crispy Parmesan and truffle oil chips, it was the kind of meal that makes you seriously consider abandoning all future salad plans.

Meanwhile, the Guildhall Tavern mixed fish and shellfish grill was a seafood lover’s dream on a plate. Fresh sea bass and hake, alongside steamed mussels and king prawns in lashings of garlic butter, made this a dish worth writing home about. Served with crispy fries and a silky béarnaise sauce, it was pure joy—even if we did have to unbutton our jeans halfway through.

Desserts – because saying no was never an option Despite declaring ourselves “too full for dessert”, we somehow found the strength (and stomach space) for the yoghurt and stem ginger panna cotta. Smooth, creamy, and paired with rhubarb, gingerbread crumb, and candied ginger, it was the perfect mix of sweet, spicy, and refreshing.

Then there was the orange Cointreau crème brûlée, which had a sugar top so perfectly crackable, we briefly felt like professional pastry chefs. The boozy citrus kick, fresh blood orange, and zingy lemon and lime curd took it to another level, proving once and for all that ordering two desserts is always the right decision.

The verdict?

If you love exceptional seafood, perfectly cooked steak, and buttery sauces that could probably solve world problems, Guildhall Tavern needs to be on your list. The food is unbelievably good, the service is top-notch, and the whole experience is an excuse to eat way more than you should.

And with Java making sure everything runs like clockwork with just the right amount of charm, you’ll be booking your next visit before you’ve even finished your last bite.

If you needed another reason to visit (as if the soufflé wasn’t enough), Guildhall Tavern also hosts some rather tempting events. Friday Steak Night is the perfect excuse to lean into your carnivorous cravings, with expertly cooked cuts and all the trimmings. And for something a little different, Sam’s Supper Club: A Taste of the Mediterranean, on the 29th May offers an evening of sun-soaked flavours, seasonal ingredients, and relaxed indulgence that’ll transport your taste buds to warmer shores. Keep an eye on their website or follow them on social media for updates—you won’t want to miss what they’re serving up next.

Wear stretchy trousers. You’ll thank us later.

From garage to glory; The young band that stole the show

Winning BandStorm was just the beginning—Eaker’s Karlos reveals what’s next for the high-energy trio

We’re sitting down with Karlos (14), bass player and vocalist of Eaker, a rising local band recently crowned BandStorm’s champions of 2025. He’s joined by Sam (14) on guitar and Frankie (13) on drums. With their highenergy performances and raw, powerful sound, these young musicians are making serious waves. Fresh off their big win, we caught up with Karlos to talk about the band’s journey, influences, and what’s next for Eaker.

Congratulations on winning the Eaker BandStorm title! How did it feel when you heard your band’s name announced as the winner?

I was so excited! When they announced Eaker as BandStorm’s champions of 2025, we were jumping around so much that we forgot to accept our award and first-place title.

How did you all meet, and what inspired you to start a band together?

I was 10 years old and desperate to start a band, so I put up an advertisement in our local music store. Frankie got in touch, and we started jamming for about two years. We decided we needed another member, so we put up another advert and met Sam, our guitarist.

What’s the story behind your band’s name? Did you go through a few different ideas before settling on it? We were at a laundrette, and for some reason, there was an old, dusty thesaurus at the back of the room. Just for fun, we started flicking through the pages and came across the word “Eaker.” We thought it sounded cool, so we looked up the meaning. It described us perfectly—it means you’re not too smart and don’t always think things through. It also happened to be the surname of the first man to fly over the US in the First World War. Since we rap about war and disagree with it, we felt it matched us.

Who are your biggest musical influences, and how do they shape the music you create?

If you listen to our original material, you might be able to tell that our biggest influence is Rage Against the Machine, and you’d be right. They inspire us through their creative guitar effects, punk drumming, and angry yet informative rapping. These are all qualities of Rage Against the Machine, as well as of Eaker.

Can you describe your songwriting process? Do you all contribute, or does one person take the lead?

Although we all play a part in writing songs, Sam (our guitarist) is the main guy for coming up with awesome riffs. His process is simple—he thinks of a melody and transposes it onto his guitar. He then presents his ideas to me and Frankie, and we work on them collaboratively. I write my bass lines and lyrics based on how the song makes me feel, while Frankie plays a big part in the arrangement.

Winning this competition is a big deal! What was the biggest challenge you faced while preparing for it?

We didn’t really face any major challenges, apart from practising more and using live performances at open mic nights at Chaplins as rehearsal for the competition.

If you could collaborate with any artist or band—past or present—who would it be and why?

If I had the chance to collaborate with any artist or band, it would be N.W.A. I love ‘90s hip-hop. I once heard Zack de la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine collaborate with KRS-One and The Last Emperor, and it sounded sick. Since I’m really into N.W.A., I think a collaboration with them would be incredible.

What’s the best part about being in a band at such a young age, and what’s the most difficult part?

The best part is getting to make sick music with my two best mates. The hardest part is that, because we’re under 18, it’s difficult to get gigs in a lot of places.

Where do you see the band in five years? Any dreams of touring or recording an album?

We’re looking to record an album before summer, and a tour would be insane if someone offered us the opportunity. In five years, I’ll be 19, which is a crazy thought! I hope we’re still best friends and mega successful with Eaker. A record deal and selling out stadium gigs doesn’t seem too much to ask!

For other young musicians dreaming of starting a band, what advice would you give them?

Don’t start a band with your existing friends. Instead, put out ads and form a band first—then become friends. I tried forming bands with my mates three times, and every time it failed because we ended up messing about and not practising.

What kind of venues and events do you love performing at? Are you open to gigs like festivals, private parties, or community events?

We’ll play any venue that offers us a spot. Ideally, festivals—we just love performing!

How would you describe your live performance? What can audiences expect when they come to see you play?

A ton of energy and power. And an insane time. We literally go crazy on stage, and it’s infectious!

Do you perform original songs, covers, or a mix of both? Can you tailor your setlist to suit different events?

We mainly play original songs, but we’re planning to add some covers. Right now, apart from some Rage Against

the Machine and Blink-182 covers, it’s all originals. We’ll be adding more, like Limp Bizkit and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

What has been your most exciting or memorable gig so far, and why?

The Old Fire Station, Bournemouth—where we won BandStorm 2025. The pressure was intense, not just because of the massive crowd, but also because there were three judges watching us.

Do you have any upcoming gigs or plans to tour locally? How can venues or event organisers get in touch with you for bookings?

Yes! We’re playing at Christchurch Music Festival, King of Kings Skate Event, Kings Park and Brewhouse & Kitchen, Southbourne.

Irina Georgescu: Preserving fruit and vegetables is a national sport in Romania

Lauren Taylor talks to the Romanian cook about leeks for breakfast, polenta with everything and what the Danube river means to her.

Eastern European food is often associated with meat, but travel along the Danube river, and the regions it weaves through at it’s most easterly point, and you might be surprised at the prevalence of plant-based cuisine.

“Romanian, Bulgarian, Serbian, by which travellers have associated a lot of meat, because the menus in the restaurants are different to the ones people cook at home,” says cookery writer Irina Gerogescu. Bar the odd treat or celebration, home kitchens in this region are much more likely to be enjoying vegetables.

“Almost everyone at the back of the house has a little vegetable garden. The temperatures in the summers are very high, it’s a haven for tomatoes. It has the right climate for vegetables; a lot of runner beans, garden, peas, peppers, aubergine.”

Leeks may be better known to us as a national food of Wales (where Georgescu now lives having moved from Romania to the UK 15 years ago) but they were loved by the Romans too, becoming a culinary symbol of Oltenia, in the south of the country – and part of many national dishes, including eggs with sautéed leeks for breakfast.

It’s why 90% of the dishes in her latest cookbook Danube – which focuses on the cuisine influenced by this side of river

and the lands upon which it laps – are vegetarian. “I wanted to select those dishes that are very popular, but you won’t find them in a restaurant.”

Beginning in the Black Forest of Germany, the Danube goes through 10 countries, “When it enters Romania [through The Iron Gates gorge] it turns into a border between Romania and Serbia, further east is Bulgaria, and then it turns into the beautiful Danube delta, a

UNESCO site, and flows into the Romanian Black Sea,” says Georgescu. And it’s this side of Eastern Europe and its food, influenced by a complex history and an eclectic ethnic fabric, the she wants to celebrate.

Gerorgecu grew up in Romania’s capital Bucharest, a family of four in a small, onebedroom home. But her grandmother hailed from Transylvania, in central Romania, and her grandfather’s family from Oltenia.

“We used to talk about some of the dishes of the south, and my grandmother used to just guess how they were made because we didn’t have cookery books or anything like that in those times,” recalls the 48-year-old.

The communist regime fell when she was 12, so before that some of her earliest memories of food in her home country include “queuing to get oil, butter, or nothing – sometimes queuing for hours and you’d have nothing in the end because the supply in the shop had finished”. So often cooking involved making whatever was possible out of what they had, during the times when electricity, gas or water was available.

“I have a lot of memories, especially before the regime fell, of preserving. It’s a national sport! We have to eat later in the year, so we had compotes, jams, slow-cooked roast peppers, aubergine, onions – put that in a jar

ABOVE & RIGHT

and have it for the rest of the year. Fermented pickles, fermented tomatoes, fermented cabbage – because otherwise you wouldn’t have the national dish for Christmas and Easter called sarmale (cabbage rolls).”

So important, in fact, that her family kept a big barrel of brined cabbage, pickles and sauerkraut on their balcony so there was a constant supply. “Without sarmale you couldn’t have Christmas to be honest!” she laughs.

Meat was rare. “My uncle lived in Transylvania, so every December we would drive for six to eight hours to him to pick up a pig. He would prepare the pig in two days, we put it in the car and took it back to our apartment. There was not a lot of food around – for us, that was the shopping.”

Cornmeal (or polenta) was – and is still – an important staple in Romania; hot, creamy polenta with jam for breakfast, cold polenta

sliced like bread and served with soup, or chopped thin into layers for a version of lasagne.

Historically, wheat was very precious, she explains, maize isn’t as expensive and easier to grow on hilly areas. It was introduced in these lands in the 17th century during the Ottoman Empire and it wasn’t taxed so landowners were encouraged to plant corn to feed the poor, and as a ‘plan B’ if the wheat crop failed. “And this is how we ended up with so many cornmeal dishes in our cuisine,” Georgescu says.

When flour ran out in UK shops during the coronavirus pandemic, “Cornflour remained untouched” – so she started an online cooking class to teach people how to make cornbread in lockdown.

But you can’t have a Danube cookbook without a few fish recipes. From the river, carp, catfish and trout are all key

ingredients. “You will see the connection between the land and the river and the dishes, the influence that massive river had on the people around the river and in the Delta, because [here] the meat is replaced with fish,” says Georgescu – think moussaka made with fish (musaca de peste).

The river may be a political border today, but historically it was a route for trade and migration, “It was how Greek colonies travelled in the first centuries of our time,” she notes.”The river was always important.”

And now, there are many campaigns for bridges to be built across it, she says, they want to shop, attend festivals, and eat, across the river bank in Bulgaria or Serbia. “It’s an interesting way that we’ve come around”, people are “wanting to be connected by, not separated by, the river.”

INGREDIENTS

35ml (generous 2tbsp) sunflower oil

4 medium bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs

1 large brown onion, finely sliced

300g potatoes, cut into thick chunks

1tbsp white wine vinegar

250g long-grain white rice

1L vegetable or chicken stock

1⁄4tsp freshly ground black pepper

1 medium courgette

2 large garlic cloves

1tsp chopped marjoram, fresh or dried

Salt

To serve:

Good olive oil

Lemon wedges

Tomato salad

INGREDIENTS

For the honey and garlic dressing:

3 medium garlic cloves, grated

1tsp salt

2tbsp olive oil

1tbsp juice from 1 small lemon

4tsp runny honey

25ml (scant 2tbsp) water

For the peppers:

2 large Romano peppers

4tsp sunflower or vegetable oil

To serve:

50g white or feta-style cheese

Chicken pilaf with potatoes and garlic courgettes SERVES

4-6

1. Preheat the oven to 170°C fan (325°F/gas 3). Use a 23-24 centimetre, 12 centimetre-deep casserole dish with a lid (otherwise, cooking times may differ).

2. Cover the base with the oil and heat well. Sprinkle the chicken with salt generously, and fry the thighs in one layer for 15 minutes, turning often. Keep the heat on medium so they don’t burn, then transfer the cooked chicken to a plate.

3. Fry the onion with a good pinch of salt in the remaining oil over a medium heat for eight minutes. Add the potatoes, combine well and fry for another three minutes, then add the vinegar and scrape the base of the pan with a spatula to remove all those caramelised bits.

4. Place the chicken thighs on top of the potatoes in one layer, then scatter the rice on top and add the stock. Taste the stock to make sure it’s salty enough; if not, add more to the dish. The secret to a good pilaf is using a generous amount of salt. Add the black pepper, then cover and cook in the oven for 25 minutes. It will make a rather loose pilaf. Alternatively, cook it until the stock is completely absorbed.

5. Meanwhile, grate the courgette and garlic together and mix with the marjoram. When the rice is cooked, spread this mixture on top, put the lid back on and leave the pan to sit for five minutes out of the oven.

6. Serve immediately with a drizzle of your best olive oil, wedges of lemon to squeeze on top and a tomato salad.

Vlach fried pepper salad

The recipe makes a good alternative to roasted pepper salad because the method is quicker and fuss-free

1. For the dressing, use a pestle and mortar to blend the grated garlic and salt with the oil until it emulsifies and thickens.

2. Mix in the lemon juice and honey, then dilute it with water. Set aside.

3. Slice the peppers into three to four centimetre-long wedges and scrape off all the seeds.

4. Heat the oil in a frying pan (skillet) over a medium heat and cook the peppers until soft and with lightly burnt patches.

5. Transfer to a bowl or plate, pour the dressing over and crumble the cheese on top. Allow the flavours to infuse and the dish to cool. Serve with bread or as a side dish.

Baked cornmeal with sour cream and eggs

SERVES 2

INGREDIENTS

500ml water

2tsp salt, plus an extra pinch for baking

150g fine cornmeal (polenta)

45g salted butter, plus extra for dotting

75g cașcaval or Cheddar, grated, plus extra for baking

200g sour cream

2 medium eggs, beaten 1tsp chopped fresh thyme

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan (350°F/gas 4) or the grill to maximum temperature.

2. In a deep pan, bring the measured water and salt to the boil. Add the cornmeal and use a whisk to distribute it evenly in the water. Reduce the heat to low, cover and allow the cornmeal to absorb the liquid for eight to 10 minutes. Whisk a couple of times throughout this process.

3. Stir in the butter and cheese, then pour the cornmeal into a 23 centimetre ceramic baking dish. Allow it to cool a little, then make a large well in the middle. Add the sour cream, sprinkle with a pinch of salt, then add the beaten eggs, working them a little with a fork into the sour cream. Place a few dots of butter on top and another sprinkle of grated cheese.

4. Bake or grill for 10 minutes, or until the eggs are just set and the cornmeal has a beautiful golden crust.

5. Sprinkle the thyme on top and serve hot.

Key West Bar & Grill Restaurant

A roast with a view!

If you like your Sunday roast served with a side of breathtaking ocean views, then get yourself down to Key West—the fabulous restaurant perched at the very end of Bournemouth Pier. Honestly, if it was any closer to the sea, you’d need a lifeboat to get there.

Now, Key West has always been a cracking spot for a meal, but they’ve just upped their game by introducing Sunday roasts—and let me tell you, this is not your average, half-hearted attempt at a roast dinner. We’re talking proper, hearty, “loosenyour-belt” goodness. You’ve got a choice of succulent beef, juicy chicken, or tasty gammon, all served with all the trimmings.

The food

Let’s get straight to the point: it’s delicious. The beef? Tender. The chicken? Juicy. The gammon? Packed with flavour. The roast potatoes are crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside—the way nature intended. The gravy? Rich, proper stuff, none of that watery nonsense. Add in some perfectly cooked seasonal veg and you’ve got yourself a plate of happiness.

And if you’re the type who likes to start things off in style, there are starters too, at very reasonable prices. Think comfort food with a classy twist—something to warm you up before you tuck into the main event.

The atmosphere

The 360° sea views are absolutely unbeatable. One minute, you’re staring lovingly at your roast, the next, you’re gazing out at the endless blue horizon, contemplating life. Or dessert. Probably dessert.

It’s light, airy, and has a relaxed, holiday-like vibe, even in winter. And let’s be honest— food tastes better when you can see the sea. It’s a fact.

The verdict

For a roast dinner with a view that can’t be beaten, Key West is a no-brainer. The portions are generous, the prices are fair, and the location? Well, it’s iconic.

And yes, that includes Yorkshire puddings so big you could probably use one as a hat.

Whether you’re a local looking for a new Sunday favourite or a visitor wanting to experience Bournemouth at its best, this is the place to be.

Just don’t drop your Yorkshire pudding— seagulls round here take no prisoners.

Rating: 5/5 roast potatoes – get yourself down there!

Tables fill up fast—especially when the roasts are this good—so don’t leave it to chance. Book your spot now by calling 01202 237902 and treat yourself to a Sunday lunch with unbeatable views, mouthwatering food, and a side of pure seaside charm. Trust us, your taste buds will thank you.

Polo, parties & prestige: Inside Sandbanks’ signature summer event

With polo by the sea, world-class entertainment, and unforgettable hospitality, Sand Polo is the jewel of the summer calendar

Now in its 18th year, Sand Polo at Sandbanks has become one of the most anticipated events on the summer social calendar—combining world-class sport, live music, and luxury hospitality in a truly unique beachside setting. Ahead of this year’s event on 11th and 12th July, we caught up with founder and organiser Johnny Wheeler to talk polo, parties, and what makes this seaside spectacle such an unmissable experience.

Johnny, this year marks another exciting edition of Sand Polo on 11th and 12th July in Sandbanks. What can attendees expect from the polo matches on Friday and Saturday?

This year, we’ve got a few surprises up our sleeves, but we’ll aim to deliver a successful experience just as we do every year. The polo matches always feature some of the world’s best players, competing in a stunning beachside setting. Expect fast-paced action, high-skill polo, and an electric atmosphere. Whether you’re a polo enthusiast or a first-timer, it’s going to be a spectacular two days. The stunt riding is also a firm favourite. And of course, the backdrop of Sandbanks provides a truly unique setting that you won’t find at any other polo event.

Alongside the thrilling polo action, “Boogie on the Beach” will bring live music and entertainment each evening. Can you tell us more about the line-up and what guests can look forward to?

Absolutely! Friday evening’s ‘Boogie on the Beach’ party, following the polo, is always a highlight. It’s now a nationally acclaimed Soul, Motown, and Disco beach

party, which this year welcomes Heatwave, Jazzie B (Soul II Soul), Damage, Wonderband, and many more!

On Saturday, Ladies’ Day at Sand Polo ends with a genredefying and decade-hopping night of entertainment, starring DJ Gok Wan alongside Rick Parfitt Jr’s Band, plus a host of other acts! By the way, the evening parties are included in the ticket price!

Over the past 18 years, Sand Polo has grown into a world-class event. What’s been the biggest factor in its success?

I think the key has been a combination of location, passion, and consistency. Sandbanks is one of the most beautiful places in the UK, and its unique beach setting makes Sand Polo an event like no other. We’ve also worked tirelessly to build relationships with top players, sponsors, and local businesses, which has helped solidify the event’s reputation. But most importantly, it’s the people—our team, our partners, and the attendees—all of whom contribute to making Sand Polo something truly special year after year.

Polo isn’t the most mainstream sport in the UK— what has been the key to making it so popular and accessible at Sandbanks?

Making polo more accessible has been a big part of our vision. By holding the event on the beach, we’ve made it much more approachable for people who might not typically be exposed to the sport. It’s also a social event, not just a sporting competition. We’ve created an environment where people can enjoy the sport up close while also taking in the glamour and exclusivity of the event. It’s all about creating a memorable experience that blends both sport and lifestyle.

Aside from the sport and live music, what other hospitality and VIP experiences are available for guests this year?

We have a range of experiences to cater to different tastes. Our hospitality guests can enjoy a wonderful champagne reception, an ‘Endless Lunch’, and afternoon tea overlooking the arena. There’s also the VIP lounge, where guests can relax in style at tables or mingle with the players and celebrity guests. We’ve worked hard to ensure that every aspect of the event feels special—from the food to the service and entertainment—so our guests leave with lasting memories.

Before launching Sand Polo, what was your background? Did you always envision yourself running an event of this scale?

I come from a farming and military background, but I’ve always had a passion for sport. For my sins, I’ve also always got a thrill out of organising events. My greatgrandfather used to visit Sandbanks from the Midlands and had property interests in the area, so when I visited and saw that a good chunk of the wonderful Sandbanks beach was above the high-water mark, I immediately thought about playing polo on it. I knew there was potential to create something truly unique. It’s been a fun journey. I’ve made lots of friends, faced unforeseen challenges, and built a great team around me. We aim to exceed people’s expectations of an event experience. If I ever feel we’ve failed to do that, it’ll be time to pack up— but until then, we love our annual beach extravaganza.

Reflecting on the past 18 years, what has been your proudest moment in building Sand Polo into the world’s biggest beach polo competition?

There have been so many highlights, but one of my proudest moments was when we officially reached the milestone of becoming the world’s biggest beach polo event. Seeing it grow from a local gathering to an

international spectacle has been incredibly rewarding. But it’s the moments when I see people enjoying themselves— whether they’re watching the polo or dancing at Boogie on the Beach—that make all the hard work worth it.

Where do you see Sand Polo in the next 5–10 years? Are there any exciting plans for expansion or new elements you’d love to introduce?

We’re always thinking about how we can innovate and improve. Growing the event in size isn’t my aim. It remains a boutique event where people feel part of it and valued. They arrive with a few friends and leave with hundreds. No matter where we go, our core values of creating a spectacular, inclusive, and unforgettable event will always remain at the heart of Sand Polo at Sandbanks.

BOOK YOUR TICKET

With world-class polo, iconic beach parties, and unforgettable hospitality, Sand Polo at Sandbanks promises an experience like no other. Whether you’re coming for the sport, the social scene, or simply to soak up the summer vibes, this year’s event is set to be the best yet. Tickets are already in high demand, so don’t miss your chance to be part of the action—visit www.sandpolo.com to secure yours today.

SPONSORSHIP & BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

Sand Polo attracts a high-profile audience, from sports enthusiasts to luxury lifestyle brands. What kinds of sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses looking to get involved?

We offer a range of sponsorship packages that cater to businesses of all sizes—from headline sponsors to smaller, targeted partnerships. Brands can get involved in a variety of ways, whether through on-site activations, branded experiences, or digital promotions. For luxury brands, we offer exclusive experiences and visibility across multiple platforms. It’s all about creating bespoke partnerships that align with a brand’s values and target audience.

For brands looking for exposure, how does partnering with Sand Polo compare to more traditional forms of advertising?

Sand Polo offers a unique opportunity to reach a diverse and engaged audience in a setting that’s hard to replicate. Traditional advertising can feel impersonal or fleeting, but with Sand Polo, brands can create memorable, experiential connections with guests.

Have you seen any particularly successful sponsorship collaborations in previous years, and what made them stand out?

Yes, we’ve had some fantastic partnerships over the years. This year, our main sponsors at the time of writing include Mirabeau, who will be bringing a taste of Provence to proceedings with their rosé and the ‘Mirabeau Endless Lunch’. We also have Pommery adding some sparkle to the event with their renowned champagne and Louis Pommery English sparkling wine. Mercedes-Benz is our car sponsor and will be demonstrating the capability of one of their 4x4 models in a beach race against the fastest polo player!

For a local business or an up-and-coming brand, what’s the best way to get involved and benefit from the event’s reach?

Local businesses or emerging brands can still benefit immensely from getting involved with Sand Polo. By aligning with an event that draws such a high-profile crowd, smaller brands can really punch above their weight in terms of visibility. It’s all about creating experiences that resonate.

For those interested in sponsorship or business opportunities, now is the perfect time to get involved— contact www.sandpolo.com/sponsorship to find out more.
