A GUIDE TO GREAT SKIN AT ANY AGE
By: Family Features
Here’s the secret for achieving a glowing complexion: there is no secret. In fact, a key factor in achieving great skin at any age comes down to one common denominator that’s no secret at all. It’s simply taking good care of your skin.
After all, your skin is your body’s single largest organ. It’s your protective shield, but it can also reveal the truth of your age, especially if you’re lax when it comes to regular skin care.
Make hydration a priority. Keeping the skin hydrated maintains its barrier integrity. When the skin becomes dry, it reduces the effectiveness of the skin barrier, making it less resilient against irritants and allergens.
Often, when the skin is dry it feels more rough or flaky. With proper hydration, the skin feels smoother and looks more supple. Achieving hydration through a better skin care routine, drinking plenty of water daily and eating certain fruits and vegetables can improve your skin’s appearance, maintaining a radiant, healthy complexion. Use the right soap. Despite what your mother may have told you, squeaky clean isn’t always best. A better bet when it comes to soap is a product that respects your skin’s moisture balance and cleanses without creating tightness or irritation. Mild options such as Pears skin cleansing products are specifically
formulated and dermatologically tested to be gentle on the skin. They’re made with plant-based glycerin, which is a powerful humectant that attracts water from the environment and deeper layers of the skin to the outer layer, keeping it hydrated. Glycerin-based cleansers can help prevent stripping of the skin’s natural oils, which averts a tight, dry feeling.
“More than ever, consumers are looking for mild and gentle products that are effective, smell good and work well,” said Dr. Adriana Lombardi, founder of the Skin Cancer & Cosmetic Surgery Center of New Jersey. “Pears soap checks all the boxes. It creates a really nice, thick lather and smells crisp and clean while leaving the skin hydrated.”
Avoid hot showers. Even the best products may not overcome the potential harm that comes from taking showers that are too hot. The heat removes your skin’s natural oils, which leaves you prone to itching and dryness and may worsen skin conditions.
Instead of cranking up the heat, opt for lukewarm temperatures and keep the shower time brief. Use moisturizing cleansers, and after your shower, immediately apply moisturizer to replenish and rehydrate your skin.
Protect your skin from the sun. completing your skin cleansing routine, there’s an additional step to help maintain healthy, hydrated skin before heading outdoors: Take time to apply
a layer of sunscreen to skin that will be exposed, including your face, ears and hands. Reapply every two hours if you’re spending a great deal of time outside. Sun damage can prematurely age the skin. You may not feel the heat as much during colder times of year, but the rays are still capable of damaging your skin, maybe even more so because you don’t feel the burn.
Find more advice for keeping your skin supple and soft at Amazon.com/pears.
3 Steps to Practice a Healthy Skin Routine
Use a humidifier in your room. Adding moisture to your environment may help prevent over-drying and promote better air quality for your overall health, including your skin.
Use glycerin-based soap.
A glycerin-based soap like Pears gently cleanses your skin without stripping essential moisture.
Moisturize immediately after showering. Showering, especially at higher water temperatures, can strip your body’s natural oils. Applying lotion immediately after you shower helps retain the moisture your body needs.

Protect Skin from the Sun Protect Skin from the Sun
3 simple tips for summer skin care
By: Family Features
Taking good care of your skin all year long is essential, but even more so in the summer when the power of the sun is at its strongest. Healthy skin doesn’t require fancy moisturizers or expensive skin care products. You just need to adopt a few healthy habits.
For example, keeping your skin healthy and glowing starts from the inside out by eating and drinking healthy foods and beverages that nourish your body’s largest organ and promote healthy skin cells. Additionally, studies show certain foods, such as fresh, juicy grapes, may help protect healthy skin even when exposed to UV light, which is known to damage skin cells.
A study published in the journal “Antioxidants,” in which people consumed 2 1/4 cups of grapes every day for two weeks, showed increased resistance to sunburn and reduced markers of UV damage at the cellular level. This study reinforced previous and similar findings published in the “Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.” Grapes are also a hydrating food with 82% water content; hydration is essential to healthy skin. Along with snacking on fresh, delicious California grapes, consider these everyday ways you can keep your skin safe from the sun’s rays.
Seek Shade
Most experts recommend avoiding the sun at the height of the day, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when its rays are at full strength. That doesn’t mean you can’t be outside – just seek shade as often as possible while enjoying the warm summer air.
Prioritize Hydration
Drinking water and staying hydrated is important year-round, but especially when it’s hot and you’re more likely to lose water content through sweat. Keep your body full of moisture with simple and delicious Grape-Infused Waters. For a zesty kick, try Grape, Ginger and Lime that combines the sweetness of grapes with the zing of ginger and lime, or Grape, Lemon and Mint, offering a bright and invigorating blend of citrus and mint. Enter your Zen state with a mellow, spa-like sip from Grape, Cucumber and Mint.
For a cool, hydrating snack, try freezing grapes. Simply rinse, pat dry, remove from the stems and freeze for 2 hours in a single layer on a sheet pan. You can even enjoy them as flavorful ice cube replacements in these easy-to-prepare, flavorful beverages.
Layer Up
While you’re enjoying the sunshine, layer up with a generous application of 30 SPF or higher sunscreen every 1-2 hours. Wear lightweight, long-sleeve shirts; wide-brimmed hats; sunglasses; and other protective clothing to reduce sun exposure, which can lead to wrinkles, age spots and other health problems, including an increased risk of skin cancer.

Their effervescent; I Wonder if I Take You Home, is the first of five gold hits they scored together, which led to the platinum success of “Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam with Full Force,” their full-length debut. I grew up with their music, so you can imagine what a pleasure it was to sit down with 80’s icons Taylor Dayne and Lisa Lisa for this exclusive Hotspots interview: Were you always a performer, even as aa child or when did it start?
Taylor - I was moved by music at such a young age. I lived in an apartment building and music was played everywhere. I grew up in New York, and I had my first solo in kindergarten when I was 5 years old.
Lisa Lisa - I started performing when I was 6 years old singing in a church choir with my mom. What was your first professional (paid)
Taylor - Probably at 16 or 17 and I was in a band with my boyfriend, and we did a couple shows, the band was called “Felony.” I left the band as I decided I wanted to be a solo artist. I played in every club in NYC.
Lisa Lisa - On December 27, 1984, I was at the Danceteria in Manhattan as Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam. When did you realize performing would be your career?
Taylor - At 5, I knew!
Lisa Lisa - I knew I loved it when I sang to my mother at 6 years old. I saw my mother in tears and I said this is what I want to do, and I fought to get to where I am at.
Other than Suth Florida, do you have a favorite venue or city to perform in and why?
Taylor - Over the years there have been so many moments, so it’s difficult. I played Carnegie Hall a month ago and that was pretty amazing. Every show, every night is different, so it’s really hard to say. I really love playing everywhere.
Lisa Lisa – It was definitely, Radio City
Music Hall as it was my dream and when I performed there, I knew I made it. How do you balance family life and being on the road so much?
TaylorMy kids are adults now, but at some point, I paid the price of being on the road. Although, I did perform a lot more weekend warrior stuff when my kids were young. - I am a true believer that you make things happen when you want to. My kids are my best creations, but they were constantly on the phone with me. In addition, I was lucky enough to have my sister help me raise them and they also had

Lisa Lisa - I do laundry. I love doing laundry, it’s very therapeutic. What was the best moment in your career?
Taylor - I have had many, but sometimes the best moments is the advice from someone who inspired me like Prince, etc. Those moments you learn a lot. Cyndi Lauper taught me many things. Authenticity is a big part of my career, so I love having connections with people.

BOOTY GOALS:
How to Become a Booty-Builde r This Summer
So, it’s July and you just remembered summer bodies are made in… well, right now. Don’t worry, it’s never too late to turn up the heat, feel confident, and show up strong. Whether your beach-bound or pool-party ready, a lifted, toned booty never goes out of style. But don’t worry—no boring gym grind required. Here’s your fun, no-fuss guide to get that summer booty looking and feeling hotter than the July sun. Let’s butt in.
1. Booty Activation is Key
Before you even think about squats, let’s fire up those glutes. This is how you wake them up, so they actually do the work.
Try this warm-up combo:
• 20 glute bridges
• 15 donkey kicks (each leg)
• 20 bodyweight squats
Feel that burn? That’s your booty saying, “Let’s gooo!”
2. The Big Three Booty Builders
These are your go-to moves that sculpt, lift, and define:
• Hip Thrusts: Your glutes’ best friend. Do them with a barbell, dumbbell, or even a
resistance band.
• Bulgarian Split Squats: Looks scary, feels like fire, delivers results.
• Romanian Deadlifts: Tones your entire backside, not just the cheeks.
Hot tip: 3 sets of 10-12 reps each, 3x a week = booty transformation.
3. Dance It Out
Who said booty gains have to be boring? Turn up your favorite playlist (might I suggest my EP ‘Thirsty’ by Leo Harley) dance between sets, and take sweaty selfies to track progress. and dance like nobody’s watching.
Twerking, squatting to the beat, or even just some good old body rolls - movement is movement, and rhythm lives in your hips
4. Booty Band It
Resistance bands are the cheat code to a rounder butt.
Try these banded moves:
• Lateral walks
• Banded kickbacks
• Banded squats
Leo Harley
They’ll have you walking like you just got off a horse, but in the best way.
5. Eat to Grow That Peach
A great booty isn’t built on air. Make sure you’re fueling with:
• Lean protein (chicken, turkey, eggs)
• Healthy fats (avocados, nuts, olive oil)
• Complex carbs (sweet potatoes, oats, quinoa)
You’re sculpting muscles, not starving them.
6. Hydrate Like a Fountain
Water keeps your muscles happy, your skin glowing, and your energy high. Plus, a bloated belly will distract from that snatched waist and juicy booty. So, drink up!
7. Confidence Is the Real Booty Builder
No matter what stage you’re at; own it. Confidence in your walk, your stance, your workout, that’s what really turns heads.
Strut your stuff like your booty already won the summer.
Don’t stress perfection, focus on progress, fun, and feel powerful in your body. Your summer booty is just a few glute squeezes away, and every squat, shimmy, and step are part of the
So go ahead, grab your booty band, hit play on that summer playlist, and work it like the sun’s out just for

I decided that since this was our annual “Self-Care” edition, I should ask the medical professionals who advertise in Hotspots a question. The question was: What’s the number one advice you have for our readers for Self-Care? Unfortunately, there was a 3-day turnaround and here are the answers I received:
Dr Max Zaslavsky, DMD
Floss. Everyone brushes, but no one ever flosses. Most of my work is because people don’t floss. So please put that piece of string in between your teeth before you brush at least once a day, preferably at night.

The most powerful self-care advice I offer my patients is to “View your body and health as an interconnected system, not as isolated parts!” Your energy, mood, sexual wellness, physical health, weight, and self-image are all interconnected. When something feels off, that’s your body speaking – perhaps softly at first, then louder if ignored. Fatigue, pain, and other signs of aging aren’t interruptions to your day; they’re calls for care.” At UltaMed, we offer personalized and confidential care that meets you where you are in life’s journey – from hormone optimization and medical weight loss to
Dr. Ferdinand Cabrera, Medical Director, At Genesis Health Institute, our number one piece of advice is: listen to your body—then honor what it’s telling you. Whether it’s asking for rest, movement, connection, boundaries, or medical support, tuning in is the foundation of real self-care. For gay men, especially in a vibrant place like Wilton Manors and the greater Fort Lauderdale area, self-care isn’t just about spa days or supplements—it’s about creating a life that feels good from the inside out. Prioritize your health unapologetically. Surround yourself with affirming care and remember taking care of yourself is not a luxury—it’s an act of power, pride, and longevity.

The two biggest staples for self-care of the skin include a mineral sunscreen and a retinol. Sunscreen has two bene ts: 1) It prevents skin cancer. We always recommend daily protection. Especially in Florida where the UV index is so high, and 2) The sun is responsible for a lot of limes and wrinkles in the skin. Sunscreen keeps your skin looking youthful and vibrant!
Retinol helps reverse the signs of sun damage and has been shown in studies to remold and remodel collagen. It also helps with blemishes and acne/oily prone skin.

Physical sunscreens are best utilized for sun protection since they sit inertly on our skin to block the sun's harmful UV rays. Recently, the FDA released that chemical sunscreens are being absorbed into our bloodstream at excessive levels which may or may not have an adverse e ect on our bodies. So, for now, the only active ingredients that we suggest patients to use are titanium dioxide or zinc oxide

James Dean and the closeted boyfriend
Any bit of personal information about James Dean is instantly fascinating to his fans even 70 years after his death. Enter “Willy and Jimmy Dean,” starring Brandon Flynn, queer cast member of the series “13 Reasons
Why.” It’s a mini-biopic of sorts, about a little-known relationship in the short life of the actor, and it’s based on the late William Bast’s 2006 memoir, “Surviving James Dean.” The two men were roommates at UCLA and in time became lovers, but as Dean’s film career took off their relationship was forced to remain secret out of 1950s necessity.
(Dean died in an auto accident, age 24, in 1955). Guy Guido, director of the documentary, “Madonna and The Breakfast Club,” will co-write and direct the project, of which we know little else, including further casting information. Stay tuned.
Edmund White’s ‘Own Story’
Gay literary legend Edmund White died recently at age 85, and he spent a lifetime writing books that chronicled queer experience during eras that were distinctly unfriendly to that kind of work. His 1982 novel, “A Boy’s Own Story,” is a classic of gay lit — the first in a trilogy of books — and in 2023 it was transformed into a graphic novel by Brian Alessandro and Michael Carroll (White’s widower). Now it’s coming to TV as a limited series from director John Krokidas (“Kill Your Darlings”) and it's likely that if it’s well-received, more may follow. The project is in the early stages — no cast, no word on plot, no production timeline — so as news drifts in we’ll report back. The best news is that it’s happening, a wonderful development in building the larger cultural legacy of White’s work.
British filmmaker Georgia Oakley made her acclaimed indie feature debut a few years ago with “Blue Jean,” about a closeted lesbian living in Thatcher’s conservative UK during the oppressive 1980s. Now the lesbian director is taking on the world of Jane Austen in a fresh remake of “Sense and Sensibility.” With a script by Diana Reid and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Twisters,” “Normal People”), the story is familiar to Austenphiles: impoverished sisters and their widowed mother navigate romance and economic stress among the 18th-century upper classes. Nothing more is known at the moment, as it’s just been announced, and it’s unlikely that there’ll be drastic changes made to the beloved story (Jane Austen devotees can be as hilariously unyielding as any Batman fanboy), and, let’s be real, no one needs a new adaptation of anything Austen. But we want it, we always want it, and
we want queer filmmakers along for the ride, so we’ll be happily buying tickets.
Queer casting calls:
Orville Peck, Billy Porter, Jasmin Savoy Brown
Remember the ’90s movie “Street Fighter” with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Kylie Minogue? Well, they’re remaking it, which is messing with perfection, obviously, but we’ll allow it because of these co-stars: alt-country masked man Orville Peck, Jason Momoa and Noah Centineo. Billy Porter, meanwhile, has joined the cast of the upcoming “Hunger Games: Sunrise on The Reaping” (whatever that means) as villain Glenn Close’s estranged husband. That pairing alone will get us into a theater seat. And as
we get closer to “Scream7,” we’ve learned that the cast list includes recently-out Anna Camp (“True Blood”) and “Yellowjackets” star Jasmin Savoy Brown. We’re hoping they both live through it, but that’s never a given with Mr. Ghostface. And finally, queer character actor Cory Michael Smith (“Mountainhead,” “Saturday Night”) has been turning in amazing supporting performances for years now (he’s a Todd Haynes regular) and will now take on his first leading role in the upcoming Halloween-based A24 thriller “October,” a film with a plot fully under wraps. Consider it a mysterious autumnal gift of horror.
Romeo San Vicente is ready for the grand ball at the estate.

Smart Swaps and BudgetFriendly Ingredients for Heart-Healthy Meals
By: Family Features
Rising food costs can make healthy eating a challenge for many families. In fact, a poll conducted by Research! America found about 60% of Americans cite the cost of healthy food as their single biggest barrier to achieving better nutrition.
“Food is deeply rooted to family and community,” said Arlen Vanessa Marin, M.S., R.D., a national volunteer for the American Heart Association. “Recipes are passed down through generations, but as grocery prices rise, finding creative ways to stretch your budget while maintaining a nutritious
diet is key. Simple swaps – like homemade vinaigrettes instead of sugary bottled dressings, frozen veggies instead of fresh or lentils instead of processed meat – can make a big difference without sacrificing flavor.”
Consider these simple tips from the experts at the American Heart Association, devoted to changing the future to a world of healthier lives for all, to help you enjoy your favorite meals while keeping both your heart and wallet happy.

Protein Without the Price Tag
If you’re looking to add more protein without overspending, try these affordable, nutrient-packed options:
•Beans and other legumes are protein-packed, high-fiber choices for heart-healthy meals. Add them to soups, stews or salads, or enjoy them as dips with whole-grain crackers or tortillas. Choose canned, no-salt-added varieties for a quick and healthy option.
•Tofu and tempeh are versatile, plant-based staples that are rich in protein. Add silken tofu to miso soup, stir-fry firm tofu with garlic for a heart-smart meal or add tempeh to noodle dishes and curries.
•Ground turkey or chicken are leaner, often more affordable alternatives to ground beef. For a budget-friendly twist, try them in dishes like turkey picadillo or homemade tacos.
Better Grains for Your Heart
White rice is a staple in many diets, but it can spike blood sugar. When refrigerated and reheated, it can increase resistant starch while also raising the risk of harmful bacteria. Consider these ways to keep it heart-smart:
•Brown rice is a fiber-rich alternative to white rice that pairs well with almost any dish.
•Quinoa is another protein-rich grain that works in soups, salads and side dishes.
•Barley is used in many Asian soups as a whole-grain swap.
Canned, Dried and Frozen Alternatives
Healthy eating doesn’t mean you have to buy everything fresh, especially when fresh food isn’t readily available. Canned, dried and frozen foods can be just as nutritious and help eliminate costly food waste from spoilage as they stay edible longer. Check nutrition labels for low-sodium, no-salt-added and no-sugar-added options.
•Frozen fruits and vegetables are picked at peak ripeness and frozen to lock in nutrients. Use them in stir-fries, soups, smoothies or as quick side dishes.
•Canned tuna is packed with omega-3s, wallet-friendly and easy to mix with salads, sandwiches or in brown rice bowls.
