On Tuesday, February 25 was the 1-year anniversary and ribbon cutting ceremony of Java Joes in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors. Congrats to Bruce, Mark and Patrick and if you haven’t been in since they took over, go back, it’s amazing!
From Feb 26 through March 4 the National LGBTQ Task Force’s Winter Party made its return to Miami Beach for its 32nd anniversary celebration, and once again it was an amazing week of events and parties. As always the beach party was the funniest event of the week, which this year was even more special due to @ian_alexis_fit and @beautiful_surprise_88 ’s unforgettable marriage proposal. The lovebirds danced
from day to night at the iconic Beach Party, making it the perfect setting to begin their next chapter. Love always wins!!!
Also on Thursday, I went down to Miami for the James Suckling Great Wines World USA 2025 Miami event with my good friends Dr Max Zaslavsky and his wife Lauren and Arwin Mantilla and boy we all have a blast getting drunk. Afterwards Max and Lauren took us to a very expensive dinner at a high-end restaurant in South Beach. I won’t mention the restaurant’s name as although the food was delish the service was horrible. However, while there I spotted RHONY’s alum Bethenny Frankel.
On Saturday, March 1, The Stonewall National Museum, Archives and Library presented their 3rd Annual Gala “Standing on the Shoulders of our Heroes” at The Venue Fort Lauderdale. The event featured amazing food, an open bar, gaiety, and special honorees Edie Windsor and Tristan Schukraft. Congrats to Robert Monique and the entire Stonewall Museum staff on another successful gala!

Compass presents the annual Palm Beach Pride weekend on Saturday and Sunday March 29 and 30 from 12 to 6 both days at Bryant Park in Lake Worth.
Palm Beach Pride is the premier LGBTQ+ celebration in Palm Beach County, uniting over 30,000 South Florida and Treasure Coast attendees in a vibrant two-day festival. This dynamic event showcases the resilience, diversity, and progress of the LGBTQ+ community through a parade, live entertainment, and activities for all ages. Supported by over 140 inclusive businesses, Palm Beach Pride is a joyful testament to visibility, equality, and unity.
The Pride Parade takes place on Sunday, March 30, at 11am, and the parade begins on Lake Ave and continues east to Bryant Park (approximately 0.9 miles).
The incredible emcees will keep the stage electrifying, and they are Melissa St John, Velvet Lenore, Rianna Petrone and Ariel Rimm.
Velvet is also going to be the headliner and produce an incredible production, so I thought it appropriate to site down and chat
Velvet Lenore
How did you get involved with Palm Beach Pride?
I had to leave my family’s house as they didn’t understand me. So, I moved to Palm Beach when I was 21, I was homeless, sleeping in my car. I would go there on Sundays to play volleyball and eat the free food, and I met Eric Miller, and I started getting involved with benefits for Compass. When they started doing pride I was immediately involved and have done it every year.
You are famous for your productions at Pride. Do you have a favorite one and why?
I always love doing the productions for Palm Beach Pride, but the year I did Lion King and had 40 dancers has to be my favorite year.
Lenore kids, how did this happen?
I decided that I didn’t want people to go through what I went through when your family pushes you away. I owe this all to Deja Devinnier, may she rest in peace, as she was the first one I took care of and it was her idea to start the family. So, how many kids do you have now? 118.
Why do you feel it’s so important to
Tell us about your production this year at Pride?
Basically, I took my favorite songs I loved, and I created routines for them. It includes, Brittany Spears, Toni Braxton, Lady Gaga, and we are closing out the show with Show Me Love as that’s my pride song for this year. The show will have many of my children and I promise to excite and please the crowd.
Is there anything else you want to talk about?
Even though Pride is only one day a year I want to remind everyone to respect themselves every day, as Pride should be every day.
Presale Tickets: $10 (good for one
Youth Tickets (18 & under): Free. Pride Pass (Presale Only): $30 Includes two (2) tickets and a limited edition PB Pride crossbody bag (You can use both on the same day if you bring a loved one, or you can split them to go one day each.). Note: Ticket proceeds directly support the services provided by Compass Community Center. Donna, Disco & Us
Live at Hunters on Thursday, March 27
By: Scott Holland
Singer, storyteller and showman Todd Alsup brings Donna Summer's iconic, infectious songbook to vivid life on hits like “I Feel Love,” "Bad Girls," "Love To Love You Baby," and "Last Dance.” All the while he delves into the Queen of Disco’s impact on him, her enduring legacy with gay men, and the joyful role disco played in their struggle for liberation. This is a glittery celebration you won’t want to miss. The show was a smash this past summer at Provincetown’s Crown & Anchor.
Michael Todd
It was a pleasure to sit down with Todd, just a few weeks before his performance of Donna, Disco & Us at Hunter's.
It's been a bit over a year since we spoke. What have you been up to?
Lots! I performed both "Donna, Disco & Us" and my solo show "Elton Undressed" all summer in Provincetown and have toured with both shows since then. Just over a year ago, I also signed on as Varla Jean Merman's musical director. We've had an absolute blast performing her show "The Eras Tour" all over the country. And now I'm hard at work creating a brand-new project for PTown as well as helping Varla build her new show.
At what age did you begin performing?
I have been performing since birth. Seriously I was like singing on the top of my lungs obsessed with music as long as I can remember. It got more focused when I was 11 and I took piano lessons where someone could guide my frantic creative energy. What was your first professional gig?
The summer between my sophomore and junior year in high school I was hired for
the Oakland County Parks and Recreation traveling summer music show. It was very cheesy, but I did get paid. When did you know performing would be your career?
Not until late as I really resisted it. I couldn’t wait to get out of Michigan and strategized to get into college in NY to begin this life. I got into early admission in NYU. I started off as a music education major. But I immediately started getting base in the music theater department's productions. So I ended up with a degree in vocal performance. I soon realized life in Musical theater may not be for me, so I decided I wanted to write and record and perform my own music. Things kind of took off from there.
You are a singer, songwriter, pianist, and producer, is there one you like more than the others?
At different points I am grateful for each, and I am always grateful that I can jump around. Somedays I love producing and some days I love arranging, but singing will always be my top love. It feels instinctive and visceral to me since I was a baby. Do you have a favorite song to perform?
My favorite song to sing in "Donna, Disco & Us" might have to be "MacArthur Park" - it truly is one of the greatest dance tracks of all time. There's just something so powerful and dramatic and epic about it. Describe yourself in 3 words?
What do you do for fun?
After Covid who knows, but I do like to cook and love going to the movies and biking.
You won an Out Music Award…How did that feel?
Shocking, and amazing and it was really validating.
What should our readers expect from Donna, Disco & Us?
A very joyful and emotional experience. Obviously, her songs are just so infectiousyou can't go wrong with an evening of her hits. She and disco music were such a huge part of gay culture in the 70s. But it's also no secret that somewhere along the way things got weird and lots of gay men have this vague idea that she turned her back on us. I really wanted to explore all of that in my show. In addition to telling the story of her influence on the larger community, I really wanted to celebrate her monumental influence on me as a little gay boy growing up in the 80s. She was my first pop obsession. She certainly inspired me musically, but she also unlocked an awareness in me that I was gay from a very young age. She then seemed to always appear at pivotal moments in my life and point me in the direction of my true self. So I built a show where I get to sing her incredible songs, and read letters addressed to her, telling her about how much she meant to me. It is a really upbeat and
beauty professional who dedicates her life to the friendly citizens and responsible merchants of her hometown, Richfield, MN, "where butter is a spice and gravy is a beverage.” This Midwestern maven wins over theater audiences with an interactive format that combines homespun warmth and edgy improv, leaving audiences in hysterics.
Her live performances received critical acclaim with The New York Post declaring Miss Richfield 1981 “the must-see act in Provincetown," and Twincities.com noting “in these divided times, Miss R is tonic—and gin—for the soul.” In addition to selling out venues each year in top markets throughout the country, Miss Richfield has been a fixture in Provincetown, MA each summer. For over 20 seasons, she consistently sells out venues five nights a week. She also is a headline act with Atlantis Events cruise ships and resorts.
genuine, but many things around her are not! So, in her new show, “Phony Baloney,”
Miss R explores how to navigate all things artificial including intelligence, flowers, and mayonnaise. With all-new songs and videos, and a healthy heap of audience interaction, the show will leave you appreciating the artificial while keeping a foothold in reality!
Richfield 1981 for the 3 or 4th time.
Miss Richfield
I haven't spoken to you in 2 years, what is new with you and your career?
Fortunately, I love my work! So, the last 2 years have been busy, busy! I’ve been traveling and performing my shows in front of live audiences! There is nothing better than connecting with my fans in Ptown, on ships with Atlantis Events, Palm Springs, New York and Ft Lauderdale!
What is your take on our president and our current political climate?
Well, I’ve never been a huge fan of orange! I’ve always felt it washes me out and makes me look pale. And that’s kind of how I feel politically now too!
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Beautiful, bingo babe and baritone! I guess that’s 4 words, but I think I’m worth it! What do you do for fun?
Fun for me is working! As I said, my job is pretty darn fun! And traveling is the best way to make new friends. Other than that, I often enjoy rearranging and refreshing the plastic flowers that cover the hitch in front of my home. And my cat, Louis, keeps me busy since he recently figured out how to open all my kitchen cabinets. Do you have a significant other?
No, still maintaining my purity and virtue for future beauty pageants!
You travel all over the world, do you have a favorite city or venue?
Other than Ptown, which is my home away from home, I always loved San Diego and Ft Lauderdale. Both Cities had great venues and welcoming audiences. Unfortunately, my San Diego venue closed during the pandemic and has not reopened for entertainers. So now it is Sunshine Cathedral first and foremost and forever!
What does the future hold for Miss Richfield 1981?
Work, work, work! That’s what keeps me young! Performing and traveling is my life today and hopefully for many more years to come! And thanks to all who continue to support me!
Are you excited about coming back to sunny Fort Lauderdale?
Sunshine Cathedral is one of my
very favorite places to perform. You are all so lucky to have such a quality arts center and so many wonderful shows year round! It’s great on every level - technically and visually simply the best! What should our readers expect from your show Phony Baloney at The Sunshine Cathedral Center for the Performing Arts?
Expect to learn something! Phony Baloney is very up to date and modern, as I explain the intricacies of artificial intelligence. It’s also a little bittersweet, as it’s the last time I’ll be doing this show! This Baloney show has been a joy and leaving it behind is like moving on from a good friend. But Sunshine is the place for a great

Comes to Arsht and Broward Centers MJ, the Hit Musical
By: Scott Holland
The Arsht Center, the Broward Center and Broadway Across America are thrilled to present the smash-hit musical, MJ. Fans will have two opportunities to catch the Tony Award-winning musical beginning at the Arsht Center from March 18-23 and the Broward Center from April 8-20.
He is one of the greatest entertainers of all time. Now, Michael Jackson’s unique and unparalleled artistry comes to South Florida in MJ, the multiple Tony Award-winning musical centered around the making of the 1992 Dangerous World Tour. Created by Tony Award-winning Director/Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, MJ goes beyond the singular moves and signature sound of the star, offering a rare look at the creative mind and collaborative spirit that catapulted Michael Jackson into legendary status. It’s thrilling sold out crowds on Broadway, in cities across North America, and in London’s
West End…and now MJ is startin’ somethin’ in Miami and Fort Lauderdale as it makes its premiere at the Arsht Center.
Jamaal Fields-Green plays the title role of ‘MJ’ after achieving the distinction of being the first and only person to have played the role in all three global productions: on Broadway, on the National Tour and in London’s West End. He is joined on tour by Jordan Markus (MJ – Alternate) who will play the role twice a week, Erik Hamilton (Michael), Josiah Benson (Little Michael), Bane Griffith (Little Michael), Devin Bowles (Joseph Jackson/Rob), J. Daughtry (Berry Gordy/Nick), Josh A. Dawson (Tito Jackson/Quincy Jones), Anthony J. Garcia (Alejandro), Bryce A. Holmes (Little Marlon), Cecilia Petrush (Rachel), Jed Resnick (Dave) and Anastasia Talley (Katherine Jackson/Kate).
It was a pleasure to sit down with Josh A. Dawson (Tito Jackson/Quincy Jones), for this exclusive Hotspots interview:
Josh A. Dawson
At what age did you begin performing and how did it happen?
I grew up in the church as my dad is a pastor and that was my intro to the arts as preachers are the most theatrical people on the planet. My dad sensed it in me from a very young age, and he invested in me and put me in voice lessons and dance classes, etc. I did my first musical at the age of 6 and have been doing it ever since.
What was your first professional gig?
My sophomore year of high school I did the “The Scarlet Pimpernel” at Cedar Valley College.
When did you know performing would be your career?
Once I saw my first Broadway tour, which was Wicked, I knew this is what I was going to do.
How is it playing two such famous people in this show?
It’s interesting as they both made their transition last year. Playing anyone in the later stages of their life is a huge responsibility and my performance every night is a love letter to them. Quincy has always been my icon, because when I am not acting, I am making music. To be able to honor Quincy has been a blessing. Other than this show, what has been your favorite role so far?
I played Harry Belafonte on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and it was the other opportunity that I had to play an idol. It’s a unique experience playing a person you have followed your whole life. What’s your fantasy role (a role you haven’t played but would die to play)?
My fantasy role was Burr in Hamilton, but I got to play that. However, last night I went to see Wicked as my friend, Lencia Kebede,

premiered as the first Black Elphaba. It reminded me that the first time I saw the show there was a black Fiero and I think right now that would be my dream role to play.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Stoic, lover and minister. What do you do for fun?
Music is my fun in all its forms. I play several instruments…really anything to do with music.
You are part of our LGBTQ+ community, and I hear you are single. Describe the perfect guy for you?
I think for me its just about finding a human that truly sees me for the good, the bad and everything in between, and shows up authentically, honestly, and transparently. I am a Sapo Sexual (sexually attracted to the mind) and that really guides my choices.
Finally, what should our readers expect from this touring company of “MJ?”
this show when it was workshopping, so I know it from the beginning. This cast is committed to bringing Broadway and healing this country at a time when we desperately need it, post an election and post a pandemic. For 3 hours we give people the opportunity to find the common denominators.

LET HER SHINE BRIGHT!
A Poem by Rajee Narinesingh
“BEFORE MY TRANSITION! I could never live up to society's standards of what a man should be”
“AFTER MY TRANSITION! The special woman I have become!”
This Women's History Month I take time out to reflect on my womanhood. The womanhood I had to fight for as a Transgender Woman. And I write about it in this poem!
LET HER SHINE BRIGHT!
I let her shine bright! I unleashed her from the depths of my soul. For the whole world to behold. Letting my authenticity unfold!
She was there before I even recognized her! Many people saw her before I could concur. She would peek out from within me from time to time. From such a
young age I found myself having to put my life on the line.
I let her shine bright! I unleashed her from the depths of my soul. For the whole world to behold. Letting my authenticity unfold!
Hey, fagot! Hey, sissy! That's what they were calling me. I couldn't understand why they just wouldn't let me be. I'll beat your ass if you don't start walking like a boy. It was like my being they wanted to destroy.
I let her shine bright! I unleashed her from the depths of my soul. For the whole world to behold. Letting my authenticity unfold!
As time went on, she came out more and more. And eventually the real me I couldn't help to adore. I honored and defended her. My womanhood, call me miss. Don't call me SIR!
I let her shine bright! I unleashed her from the depths of my soul. For the whole world to behold. Letting my authenticity unfold!
This is my nature. And I must be me despite all the danger. I refuse to live as a fraud in a social prison. I display her for the world to see as my liberation has risen.
I let her shine bright! I unleashed her from the depths of my soul. For the whole world to behold. Letting my authenticity unfold!

Heat nonstick skillet over medium heat. Spread 1 tablespoon butter on one side of two bread slices. Place buttered side down in heated skillet. Add two slices
cheese to each bread slice. Spread 2 tablespoons dressing over cheese slices. Add 3 ounces corned beef to each bread slice.
Spread 2 teaspoons dressing over corned beef. Spread 2 tablespoons sauerkraut over corned beef.
Spread remaining butter on one side of remaining bread slices. Place buttered side up on top of sauerkraut.
Cook 4-7 minutes each side, flipping once, until golden brown and cheese is melted.
and expecting great results, but your HotBody still ain’t sweet. Your energy crashes mid-workout, fat loss has stalled, and you feel more sluggish than ever. The culprit? Sugar.
Sugar is sneaky, it’s in way more food than you think, and it can quietly derail your progress in the gym. That’s no accident, sugar is highly addictive. It lights up the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine, the same feel-good chemical activated by drugs like nicotine and caffeine. The more sugar you eat, the more your brain craves it, leading to a cycle of highs, crashes, and even withdrawal-like symptoms when you try to quit.
Sweet Sabotage
At first, sugar gives you a quick energy boost, but this is followed by a brutal crash, leaving you sluggish, tired, and unmotivated. That’s because sugar spikes your blood glucose, then insulin kicks in and drops it fast, sending you on a rollercoaster of energy highs and lows.
When insulin is constantly elevated due to frequent sugar intake, your body gets stuck in fat-storage mode. Instead of burning fat for fuel, it clings to it, especially around the belly.
Muscle Recovery
Sugar increases inflammation, which makes muscle soreness worse and slows down recovery by affecting protein synthesis, meaning your muscles don’t rebuild as efficiently. So, if you’re struggling to bounce back after workouts, sugar could be to blame.
Hormones and Sleep
Too much sugar throws off important hormones like insulin, ghrelin (hunger hormone), and leptin (fullness hormone), making you crave more junk and feel hungrier than you should. It also disrupts sleep, which is crucial for muscle recovery and fat loss.
How to Cut Back on Sugar Without Feeling Deprived
Leo Harley
Identify Hidden Sugars
Sugar isn’t just inside of candy and soda. It’s hiding in everyday foods like:
Flavored yogurts and granola
Protein bars and sports drinks
Salad dressings and sauces
“Healthy” cereals and instant oatmeal
Check food labels for ingredients like high-fructose corn syrup, cane juice, dextrose, maltodextrin, and sucrose—all sneaky forms of sugar.
Healthier Alternatives
You don’t have to give up sweetness entirely, just choose better sources:
Stevia or monk fruit (zero-calorie, natural, and won’t spike blood sugar)
Raw honey or maple syrup (better than refined sugar but still use sparingly)
(berries, apples, bananas - naturally sweet with fiber to slow digestion)
Balance Your Meals for Fewer Cravings
Cravings often come from blood sugar dips, so focus on meals that keep you full and satisfied:
Protein: Chicken, eggs, fish, and Greek yogurt help stabilize blood sugar
Healthy fats: Avocados, nuts, and olive oil keep cravings at bay
Veggies and whole grains help slow digestion and prevent spikes
Beat Sugar Cravings
Once you kick sugar to the curb, you’ll start noticing massive changes in your body and performance. I have cut sugar for the past 6 weeks, and I have had great results:
More energy: No more mid-day crashes
Faster fat loss: Say goodbye to stubborn belly fat
Better workouts: More endurance and strength gains
Improved recovery: Less soreness, faster muscle repair
No more cravings: The body learns to love real food
Sugar might taste great, but it’s holding you back from your fitness goals. Cutting it out (or at least cutting back) will boost your energy, improve your performance, and help you burn fat faster. Start by swapping out the worst offenders, replacing them with better choices, and watching your progress skyrocket.
So, are you ready to break up with sugar?
Cravings are normal, but they don’t last forever. Try these tricks:
Increase protein and healthy fats (keeps blood sugar stable)
Stay hydrated (sometimes thirst feels like a sugar craving)
Go for a walk or workout (exercise reduces sugar cravings)
Try dark chocolate (85% or higher) for a low-sugar fix
Break the Habit Gradually
Going cold turkey works for some people, but if that sounds too extreme, try this approach:
• Week 3: Reduce added sugar in meals (watch out for sauces and condiments)
• Week 4: Limit desserts to special occasions or find low-sugar alternatives

Decorate Your Way to
Festive St. Patrick’s Day
4 DIY projects with a touch of Irish
By: Family Features
Pairing Shepherd’s pie and potato soup with green pints and Irish delights are surefire signs of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Food and drink may be the stars of the show, but a little festive ambiance can transport guests from your dining room table to the streets of Dublin.
A few seasonal touches are all it takes to complement a menu of corned beef and cabbage. Consider these DIY decorations for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day party.
Set a St. Paddy’s Mood – Show off your holiday spirit for all to see with a homemade wreath that gives your front door a perfect welcoming touch. Cut shamrock shapes out of green construction paper then glue together, edge to edge, to your desired size. Punch a hole in the top shamrock and run string or ribbon through to hold up your work of art.
The Gift of Green – Lend a helping hand to guests who forget their green with shamrock-shaped pins they can attach to shirts or hats. Wooden shamrocks tend to work best with small pins glued to the back. Arrange these easy party favors near the door so your friends and neighbors can grab one as they enter.
A Homemade Pot o’ Gold – Send guests chasing the rainbow and reward their adventures with canning jars filled with candies wrapped in gold. Simply spray paint jars green, fill with gold-wrapped candies and place them in various gathering areas for easy-to-reach treats.
Custom Cups – Upgrade boring drinkware with a leprechaun look. Find green cups (plastic or paper) and wrap them with black ribbon using hot glue to secure. For a final touch, add a gold sticker as the belt buckle.

Laverne Cox’s key role in ‘Outcome’
That recent clip of Laverne Cox on “The View” where she reminds viewers that it’s the “other 1%” of the population that people should be upset about instead of trans people has gone very viral, making its truth-telling way around the internet. She was on the show to promote her now-streaming sitcom “Clean Slate” but her next project is already readying itself for public
consumption. It’s called “Outcome,” the latest film from director Jonah Hill (who also co-wrote with Ezra Woods), and it’s about an actor on a career slide, battling blackmail and his past actions. Starring Keanu Reeves as the actor in question, Cox has a specific and pivotal role in the film that also features a long list of big names: Hill, Cameron Diaz, Matt Bomer, Susan Lucci, David Spade, Kaia Gerber, comedians Roy Wood Jr. and Atsuko Okatsuka, and Martin Scorsese. Apple TV+ is
readying its release this year, and there’s sure to be an unmissable marketing
‘Rains Over Babel’ forecast to set the queer arthouse a ame
An oddball standout at Sundance, the debut feature from Colombian filmmaker Gala del Sol, “Rains Over Babel,” has been picked up for North American distribution by Latido Films. Welcome news it is, too, because inventive queer filmmaking feels more and more like an act of defiance in the U.S., and this one has invention to spare. Set in an afterlife dive bar called Babel, queer misfits gather for a surreal trip through Dante’s “Inferno.” Full of angels and demons, fight sequences, dance numbers and, we are told, talking lizards, they all await their fate. Sounds like “The Good Place” reboot we’ve been waiting for. It’ll probably float into your local arthouse theater later this year.
‘Twinless’ stars Dylan O’Brien x2
If you’re a fan of “Maze Runner” and “Teen Wolf” star Dylan O’Brien, you probably remember his
appearance on the sci-fi/comedy anthology series “Weird City,” where he found himself simultaneously heterosexual and also involved in a passionate romance with “Modern Family” patriarch Ed O’Neill. Now he’s the star of the equally unusual queer romance “Twinless.” The film played Sundance where it won the Audience Award and became the subject of a piracy attempt (Mr. O’Brien has at least one sex scene in the film and it was leaked online) but it also won its star the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting. It’s about two young men who form an intense relationship after meeting at a support group for people whose twin siblings have died, and it was written and directed by O’Brien’s co-star, gay filmmaker James Sweeney, featuring “Gilmore Girls” icon Lauren Graham as O’Brien’s mother. When do non-film-festival goers get a legit look? Stay tuned.
‘Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion’ reunion
Good news, gays of the ’90s, pop culture is going to cater to your needs in a big way very soon because there’s a sequel to 1997’s “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion” in the works. Details are sketchy right now, but the next chapter in the story of two best friends re-inventing themselves 10 years after high school is getting a 30-year fast forward. It’s being produced by Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino, Romeo San Vicente is angelically devilish.
who will also star, of course (we’d ignore it if they didn’t, obviously) and Robin Schiff (“Emily in Paris”), who wrote the first film, will write this one. Who goes to their 40th high school reunion? We have no idea, but we’re rooting for the return of sardonic Gen X queen Janeane Garofalo, who stole scenes in the first movie. We need her now more than ever.

The Healing Power of a Punchline
How is FORTUNE FEIMSTER turning conservative audiences into unlikely allies and bringing hope to America's most challenging spaces
By Chris Azzopardi
Fortune Feimster may not wear a cape or leap tall buildings, but she might just be a superhero. Her superpower? Making us laugh until we forget why we needed saving in the first place.
In an America that often feels like a punchline without the comedy, Feimster offers both relief from the chaos and inspiration to keep pushing forward. With three Netflix specials and over a million Instagram followers, she's built her career transforming life's absurdities into moments of pure hilarity.
Her latest Netflix special, “Crushing It,” tackles everything from marriage to navigating life as an out gay person — including the moment she and her wife Jacquelyn “Jax” Smith realized their honeymoon destinations weren't exactly LGBTQ-friendly.
On tour this year, Feimster isn't just serving up jokes — she says her shows have evolved into spaces where queer people and allies can laugh, connect and feel seen.
During our conversation, Feimster opened up about the deeper impact of her comedy, from helping parents better understand their LGBTQ+ kids to reaching audiences in conservative areas where visibility matters most. She also reflects on the fears surrounding marriage equality, why she and her wife Jax rushed to the altar after Ruth Bader Ginsburg's death, and what gives her hope despite today's political climate.
With everything happening right now — the political climate, the fires so close to your home — how are you holding up?
The fires really just made all of us, at least in L.A., stop in our tracks and go, "Holy cow." So, devastating. We're just kind of coming out of that, and then all this other stuff is happening. You do what you can and then just have to focus on getting back out there and just trying to bring levity to the situation in any way you can because you feel so helpless to know what to do otherwise. What does it mean to you to do what you can?
I think there's a lot of people who want people in the public eye to fix things. And you're like, "This is so big!" I know it comes from a place of other people not knowing what to do, so maybe you'll know what to do, but I'm right there with everybody else.
So all I know how to do is to continue to be representation, hopefully positive representation, and to keep reminding people we exist and have a voice and are people and have love and have problems and have all the same trials and tribulations as anyone else, as any straight person I know. And there's power in sharing our stories and being out and being proud. That's the best I know how to do right now — just continuing to be some sort of positive voice out there in the mix of all the negativity.
In “Crushing It,” you open the show talking about how, for your honeymoon, you accidentally went to countries where being gay is illegal. That must be eyeopening for straight fans of yours who aren't familiar with these laws in other countries. How do you think your comedy in the next few years can reach across the aisle?
The whole point [of that bit] was to say everyone gets comfortable and thinks, "Oh, gay rights are solved. Marriage equality exists, so you must be OK and we're fine in our country.” That's what I'm saying is the perspective, I think, of people who aren't in the community. I wanted to point out the fact that there are many places where it's not safe to go, where you can be arrested, and this still exists in these times. Through comedy, I get that point across.
I'm never going to be the political commentary comic, the social issues comic.
There are people so much smarter than me who are so much more aware and so much better at presenting those facts and stories. I can only do it in my way, which is to let me tell you a funny story of something that happened to me. But the underlying part of that is, “This is scary, it sucks.” There's so much further to go in this fight for equality, not only in our country but the whole world.
So yeah, I hope to continue to tell stories like that, like I did in my “Sweet & Salty” special, where I tell my coming out story. Even though it's masked by a funny story of going to a Hooters restaurant and then telling my mom at a Chinese restaurant later, the underlying part of that is it's really hard to come out. I just think humor is a powerful tool — if you can make people laugh, they listen. And if they're really hearing you, the underlying message comes through.
When in your career did you know, people really were listening to your message?
A byproduct of my standup that I just didn't realize would exist is that, through a platform like Netflix, you're getting to tell your stories in front of people who might not have watched you otherwise. So straight people watch, conservative people watch, males watch. I don't think men were normally coming to my shows as much before, but on Netflix, they'll sit there and watch. It's cool to open minds in that way.
During the pandemic when “Sweet & Salty” came out, so many people were at home, so they saw something they might have not seen otherwise. I got a ton of messages that I didn't expect from straight people saying, "I never realized how hard it was to come out, what that meant and the fear that gay people must
Fortune Feimster
go through in having that conversation." And that was a really amazing thing to hear from men, these dads. I also had parents say to me, "I've had an inkling that my kid might be gay, but they had never come out to me or felt comfortable. And so, we watched your special together and that made them feel like they could open up at the end of it." Or I've had young people say, "I was scared to tell my parents I was gay, but when I saw them laugh at your jokes, I felt safe to come out to them." I couldn't believe that. Because I'm just sharing my own stories.
With your upcoming tour, you have many stops in more conservative states, like North Carolina and Kentucky. Why is it important for you to show up in those places?
I never shy away from those places because I was there in North Carolina at one point, and I desperately needed someone like me to speak to me. I think I would've come out much sooner had there been representation, had I seen a lesbian comic come through town when I was 18. That could have had a huge impact on me. And it just didn't happen as much back then because it was not as welcoming or accepted to be gay. I didn't have YouTube or “Will & Grace.” So I think about what I needed growing up in a small conservative town in the South, and that still exists for a lot of people, even though they have a lot more access and there's a lot more representation. To go to these red states and these conservative areas and be an out, proud gay person and to tell my stories and have the audience full of people who relate to those stories or people who are just like me and they
want to support me, it's powerful. Sometimes I'll get people saying “Why would you go to Florida?” when Don't Say Gay was happening, or when the drag ban was happening in Nashville. I'm like, "This is when we have to go.” Because in Nashville, I did the Ryman. That was 2,800 people. And I said, "I can't change the laws here, I can't make the legislation be different, but I can provide a place where 2,800 people can come and look around and see allies, to see other gay people." And that's powerful to know that we have each other and can go out into the world and spread a more positive message to help, little by little, to change legislation by voting, by volunteering, making a difference. It must start in these smaller ways.
Given the anti-LGBTQ+ orders coming down from the federal level so far this year, will touring in 2025 feel different than in past years?
I don't know. I honestly haven't thought about it. I'm going to a lot of those same places, and whereas I was doing one show, now I'm doing two in these places. So, the message is getting out there, the numbers are growing, so maybe people need to feel that community more than ever. There's a sense of, "OK, for tonight, in this room, I feel good." And that does kind of pump you up to go back out there and be proud of who you are. And we're at the beginning of whatever's to come. So, it'll be interesting to see as I go what it's like in these different areas and states. And you just must hope the community continues to stick together and be strong and be a positive force for positive change.
Your wife Jax is from Michigan. When you stop here for a show, do the in-laws all pile in a van and come see you?
Yes. Her family's so amazing and has been incredibly supportive of me from the minute we started dating. I remember our first year together: I had shows at a comedy club in Royal Oak, and her dad threw a little party before the show and all her family came. And her mom is always going to shows in different states. They're all just so supportive and proud. And Jax has been out since she was 15 and has always stood firm in who she is. And to have that kind of love and support… because Michigan, as you know
more than anybody, can be pretty conservative in certain areas as well.
You and Jax got married in 2020, and I hate to even ask this, but with the current political climate, there's a real fear about the future of marriage equality. Is that something you and Jax talk about? And how do you personally navigate that kind of uncertainty?
It certainly hangs over our heads a bit because I think it's very naive of people to think that it's not in jeopardy. Well, look at Roe vs. Wade.
Exactly, yeah. I had extended family tell me, "Oh, you're worried about nothing." And I don't know. "That's easy for you to say, you don't know." We really don't know. Maybe it's totally fine. But the goal for them for so many years was Roe vs. Wade, and once that box was checked for them, it was like, "Well, what's the focus now?" Because there's got to be a communal focus. And the new focus is now on marriage equality and trans rights.
Who knows what will happen?
thing that gives you hope for the queer community right now?
The beauty of my job is I get to go to so many places in so many states and so many cities. I meet thousands of people in a way that I think not as many people have exposure to, but it's just by the nature of my job. A nd what I see in all these cities are good people, really good people, and kind people, both gay and straight, all over the rainbow, all over the spectrum of all different backgrounds, ages.
But it contributed to why we got married as quickly as we did the first time. We had been engaged for a couple years and knew we were going to get married but just weren't in any hurry to plan a wedding because we're not big planners. And then when Ruth Bader Ginsburg died, we went, "Oh, crap. This changes a lot of things with the Supreme Court. And let's just do it. Let's just go ahead.”
Because it means something to us to be married and to get to have that right. To just enter into that kind of thing together meant so much to us, and so that's why we did it. We planned our wedding in two weeks and got married in front of five friends in the pandemic, just because if at some point it got revoked, we wanted to at least have said we got to be married, we got to see what that felt like. I mean, gay people should be able to experience marriage, they should be able to experience divorce, they should be able to experience all the things. With everything going on, it's easy to focus on the negatives — but what's one
And those voices online and political voices, they're all so loud that you think, "Man, there's so much negativity and so much hate." That's so scary. And then I go to all these places and there's so many good people. And I'm given hope in that because I think they exist in so many places and in big numbers, in ways that people kind of don't get to see as much because those loud voices are so loud. So even in these times when those voices continue to get louder, I have hope that the good people will continue being good and doing good and looking out for each other and making a difference and the bad stuff that happens, that will be squashed by the good at some point and in time.
I am very biased, of course, but I am most proud of the audience and fan base that I've cultivated. And in my 18 years of being in this business, the thing that every venue tells me, be it a club, a theater, they say, "Your audience is so kind, so amazing. The manners, the goodness, the energy in the room, it is such a breath of fresh air." So, I'm grateful that I try to put out good stuff, positive stuff, and the fact that that is seen and appreciated by like-minded people is really something I'm so proud of.
Katch K. so just are backgrounds, political given that to those even voices to good for a the that am base 18 years kind, the is So, that is and Syndicate,
