Tree planted in memory of Joy FAMILY and friends of the wondeful Joy Langley came together on Gainsborough Square at the end of last month to plant a tree in her memory. An active and well-loved figure in the local community, Joy passed away after a short illness on September 15 last year. There was a strong desire to create a lasting memorial for Joy in Lockleaze. A beautiful acer tree has been planted next to the playground, somewhere where all who knew and loved her can go to remember, reflect and celebrate the life of this amazing woman. Joy was a beloved and hugely respected member of this community. North Bristol Advice Centre was a huge part of Joy’s life. She set it up in 1984 with Cllr Charles Merrick and Isabel Webley and remained a huge and constant support to Sally Gapper and the team at the advice centre to the very end of her life. Joy would say about NBAC:

PLUS We “We don’t stay still, we keep moving forward and expanding to help more people.” This is what Joy really cared about, helping the people of Lockleaze. Her absence is felt very deeply, most particularly by her family and close friends, but also in the wider community. It is fitting that a tree has

been planted in Gainsborough Square, at the very heart of Lockleaze. Joy devoted her life to this community and somehow remains at its heart. “We planted this tree, so we will hold her memory very dear to us. And as we watch it grow, we will be comforted to think of her, still with us in Lockleaze.”

Libraries face new chapter DO you have you got ideas or suggestions for your library and its building? Come along to a community conversation to talk about ideas for your local library. If you have ideas bring them along – they could be small ideas that could be started quickly, or bigger ideas which will make a significant difference to how a library service is provided into the future. Many of Bristol’s libraries have regular activities taking place each week, this can include craft, children and adult reading groups, children’s activities, coding for kids, and hire of rooms for local activity providers to run activities such as Yoga. Are there community-led activities you think would work well? Ideas could also include extending the service and use of buildings, and looking at other services that could be run alongside the library. Events take place until March this year, and are listed below. You can book

Charity run for Bake Off star Briony May THE Great British Bake Off Semi-Finalist Briony May will be swapping her apron for a running vest as she takes on this year’s Bath Half Marathon in support of charity Jessie May. The Bristolian Bake Off star, who lives in Horfield, is preparing to take on the challenge on March 17 to raise money for Jessie May, whose nurses provide at-home support to families caring for a terminally ill child. Briony, 34, hopes to raise £5,000 for the charity and is fundraising through her JustGiving page as she trains ahead of the big day. “Jessie May is an incredible charity and as a mother I can’t even imagine what the families and children must go through on a day to day basis,” she said. “I just want to make a contribution that will hopefully make a difference. “I started running in February 2016 to help with my health – both physical and mental. I did

the NHS running plan ‘Couch to 5k’, then a 10k in the July, and then the Bristol Half in the September.” Community fundraiser at Jessie May, Helen Mackie, said: “We’re extremely touched Briony has chosen to support us in this way. We rely heavily on fundraising efforts like this to ensure no family caring for a terminally ill child has to wait for support from a Jessie May nurse. “If you’re keen to take on a challenge in 2019 while raising much-needed funds for Jessie May, and fancy running the Bristol 10k or the Bristol Half, please get in touch with us on 0117 958 2174 or fundraising@ jessiemay.org.uk.” To make a donation and sponsor Briony, visit her JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/BrionyMay. City snap up Jemar FAIRFIELD High School (FHS) is delighted that Bristol City Football Club have snapped up the talents of Year 11 student Jemar South Thomas to join the club on its flourishing journey. Although Jemar has enjoyed playing football nearly all his life, this recent ‘rise to the top’ started at the age of 12, when he played for Bristol Central. It was during his time there, at one of the matches, when he was scouted; the outcome being the fantastic opportunity of a six-week trial and two-year scholarship. In simple terms, a dream come true! Jemar says: “I am so happy to have been awarded this scholarship where I will be getting paid for doing something that I love. “My aspiration for the next two years is to work as hard as I possibly can to get a pro-contract

Come and join the litter-pickers!

FOLLOWING recent public consultation, an evaluation of the responses and an assessment of a number of options Bristol City Council have now produced a report detailing their response to the consultation and a design review regarding an accessible path through Stoke Park. These documents can be found at www.travelwest.info/ stokeparkestatepath. Responses from the public consultation, along with other factors, have been taken into account when making decisions. The topline results showed that 52% of respondents supported the council’s preferred path option. The proposal will now be submitted to both Bristol and South Gloucestershire Planning Authorities by the end of March 2019. There will then be an opportunity for those interested to comment on it.

THE new Love Horfield movement is gathering pace and is responsible for a great feeling of togetherness around Horfield. The Horfield’s Got Talent event was a great success and as reported elsewhere in these pages a Horfield Recipe Book is being created. Following hot on the heels of these initiatives is a group of litter pickers, all local residents, who are getting together and tidying up our streets. The group has been put

together by local resident Helen Wong. Helen says: “Me and my family have always been keen litterpickers and our motto is to leave every park or woods we visit in a better state than we found it! “It’s really important to me that my four-year-old son Caleb understands the value of community and caring for our planet. “I have long been frustrated at the amount of litter in Horfield and Lockleaze, so when I heard you could borrow equipment

from Bristol Waste on a longterm loan I knew that I would like to set up a regular community litter-pick. “We meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month at 10am outside Ebenezer Church. We plan to cover as much of Horfield and Lockleaze as possible and our next undertaking will be the footpath next to the railway that connects the two communities. “All are welcome, including families and we have pickers and hoops to borrow!”

n NEWS Chris puts on a Diamond show A PACKED Lockleaze Sports Centre rocked to the sounds of Neil Diamond on Saturday, 26th January as top tribute act Forever Diamond Music. Starting with “America” he went on to perform much of Neil Diamond’s extensive back catalogue of hits in a pitch perfect style. After an interval he returned to the stage to perform a series of covers of a diverse range of acts such as The Eagles, Dire Straits, The Stereophonics to name but a few. Forever Diamond Music is Portishead-based Chris Hendy who takes his act across the country and is being used by the UK Lookalikes Agency as their official Neil Diamond. Chris says: “Bristol born and raised, my grandparents owned a music shop and as a child I spent many a happy day surrounded by all sorts of musical instruments and enjoyed making sounds (good and bad) on anything from guitars, drums and percussion instruments, to organs and pianos. “In the following years I learned to play the drum, bass guitar and keyboard. My passion for music continued throughout school and into my adult life and I eventually joined and performed in various popular local covers bands from the early 80s.”

Reopened club is proving popular LOCKLEAZE’S CA Club closed its doors for the last time in the early hours of New Years Day 2017. In the ensuing time it has been evident that the club served a very real need in Lockleaze. The reasons for its closure are well documented and have been printed on our pages before. Following a packed public meeting held at The Hub in early summer the move to re-open it gathered pace. Meetings were held with Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust to help facilitate matters and the club finally reopened just before Christmas, on December 15. Having taken advice from other similar clubs a decision was taken to open the social club side of things first, this way revenue will be earned which can be used to feed the charity side of things. A name change to Lockleaze Family Community Club was decided on as it is better to have no credit history than the poor credit history that the LCA Club held. To date over 400 members have joined. Membership costs £15 per year or £10 per year for over 60s, and in a change from the old CA Club you do not have to be resident in Lockleaze to become a member; there is even

a member from as far away as Peterborough! To join you have to be nominated by two members and have your name placed on the board in the club for two days. After this you are deemed to be a member. The funds from this year’s memberships were urgently required as there were outstanding bills that had to be settled before they could re-open: £1,000 on fire alarms, £1,500 on solicitors bills, £3,000 on a calling system, £983 for fridges, £174 for a new till, £2,600 on security alarms, and a two year licence which cost £520. The club is open from 2pm to 11.30pm on Fridays, 12pm to

11.30pm on Saturdays, and 12pm to 10.30pm on Sundays. Mid-week opening is anticipated but this is dependent on darts and skittles teams coming forward. Weekend entertainment is now fully booked until July. The new committee would like to place on record their thanks to Romney House and UWE for their donations of furniture. Member Mike Elliott says: “It is brilliant to have it back open and see a lot of people I haven’t seen for ages. They have done a great job to get it open. “I hope everybody backs it. Come and have a look, the more the merrier!”

Join Old Vic’s cast for Princess & The Hustler BRISTOL Old Vic and Eclipse Theatre’s next production is looking for people to join the cast on stage and be part of a key moment in the story. Princess & The Hustler, the latest work from Bristol playwright Chinonyerem Odimba, has its world premiere at Bristol Old Vic in February before heading out on tour. At each venue a local ensemble will be recruited to be part of the cast, but this has special significance for Bristol as the story is so rooted in the city and its history. The play is set against the backdrop of the 1963 Bristol Bus Boycott – one of the leading events in the UK Civil Rights movement – and follows the story of a black family living in Bristol. The story centres around 10 year-old Princess and her dreams of becoming a beauty queen at the Weston-super-Mare pageant. Bristolians are now being

sought to join the company for its Bristol run. They are looking for participants for two key moments: The pageant: As a celebration of black beauty in all its forms, they are seeking black women (and those who identify as women) to walk as a parade of

black women during the show. The boycott: The group also needs a number of people to take part as protesters at various points throughout the show. This opportunity is open to members outside of the black community also. You don’t have to have any

acting experience, this is a chance to represent Bristol’s local community as a whole. We understand it may be difficult for people to commit to all the dates listed so even if it’s one night or every night, this is a brilliant chance to celebrate an important part of Bristol’s history. Princess & The Hustler is the second play from Eclipse Theatre’s initiative “Revolution Mix”, spearheading the largest ever delivery of new Black British stories. It is a celebration of what it means to be black and beautiful, of a key moment in Bristol’s history and the consequences for a family caught in the middle of it all. This is a free opportunity and participants must be 18 years and above. Email engagement@ eclipsetheatre.org.uk Princess & The Hustler will be on at the Bristol Old Vic from February 9 to 23. A Window Wanderland spokesperson told the Voice: “Community events are massively beneficial for spreading happiness and a sense of belonging in neighbourhoods. “But they often rely on the sweat, determination and dedication of a handful of people. It’s not always sustainable. We know putting on a Window Wander-

Our website is designed to make it much easier. “It is created by Window Wanderland CIC, a non-profit organisation that aims to spread happiness and bring communities together. “We share everything we’ve learnt, offer inspiration and provide customisable toolkits, so organisers can create their own events, year after year, with ease.” Their website can be found at www.windowwanderland.com.

n YOUR MP writes for the Voice

Launch of my North Bristol Transport Plan

Your Voice in Parliament THE Brexit saga continues. In recent weeks, I met with the Prime Minister to feedback the concerns of local people in Bristol North West and, specifically, to highlight the impact a “no deal” Brexit would have on local businesses and jobs. Whilst the Prime Minister listened carefully, she then proceeded to say that she wouldn’t rule out “no deal” (even though everyone agrees it would be a disaster) and instead said that I needed to vote for her Brexit proposals instead. So for all of the noise, and the theatre of recent votes in the House of Commons, we still haven’t made much progress. The Prime Minister is seeking to amend her proposals to try and bring back her own MPs to support her (having suffered the largest parliamentary defeat in British history) whilst the rest of us as trying to find ways for Parliament to exert its influence over a Prime Minister that appears to not listen. At the time of writing, I’m waiting for another update from the Prime Minister in advance of another vote on her proposals. Following my extensive engagement with local residents (which thousands of you have been part of), I will continue to call for a People’s Vote so that we can secure a democratic mandate on whether to leave with the Prime Minister’s proposals or remain and reform the EU and the UK. Lastly, I have been getting through the detail of the NHS Ten Year Plan, and met with local NHS leaders from the Clinical Commissioning Group to understand its impact on patients and taxpayers in Bristol. My major concern is that there is no substantive chapter on staffing, which should be an important focus of the NHS in the years to come. And I continue to wait (for what I think is now a year) for the delayed Social Care Green Paper from the Government – an issue that I know is important to many of you who care for loved ones. I’ll continue to campaign for social care to be fully merged into our NHS and to stress that any automation in our health service should result in extra money to

for an M32 Park & Ride, I do not support the proposed location and will campaign for this to be situated further North into South Gloucestershire. The Mayor of Bristol and neighbouring MP, Kerry McCarthy, have also backed these calls. Finally, thanks to the team at the new Lockleaze Sports Centre who recently showed me the great facilities on offer. The centre has plans for expansion, which will hopefully see up to a 12-court indoor sports hub created. Sport and leisure facilities are in huge demand across the city, so it would be fantastic to have a hub here in Lockleaze, I’ll do what I can to support the Centre’s funding applications to Sport England. Have a question?

be put towards the value that should be attached to humans (as opposed to robots!) who care for us in the community. Your Champion in Bristol After a year’s worth of work, I am launching my North Bristol Transport Plan. This plan has been formed off the back of public meetings and online feedback from residents about their views on transport. It will be the basis on which I lobby national and regional Government to secure funding for transport upgrades across Bristol North West. The three key messages are that: (1) we want to see new “Transport Hubs” where we bring rail, park and ride, electric vehicle charging points and cycle lock-up/hire into one site. I’m calling for three new Transport Hubs at Shirehampton, Henbury and North of Lockleaze; (2) we want to see continuous bus and cycle lanes from these new Transport Hubs into and out of Bristol City Centre and Cribbs Causeway to provide safe

travel to work routes; and (3) we must see significant transport investment and no access to the Filton Airfield from back roads across the North of Bristol if the proposed Bristol YTL Arena is to go ahead. In January, I submitted my formal response to the West of England Combined Authority’s Transport Plan. One of the proposals put forward was for a new Park and Ride at the Bristol end of the M32, an area known as Sims Hill, adjacent to the current turning route for the Metrobus. This would result in development on unique blue-finger soil sites on both sides of the M32 (the Lockleaze side in Stoke Park being in Bristol North West). This area was rejected for development when the initial Metrobus route was agreed in 2014 for this reason. Further, it was widely believed that a Park & Ride so close to Bristol City Centre would fail to serve its purpose and that a site further North of the proposed site would better suit. Whilst I support proposals

I’ve had great feedback about these events but recognise that not everyone can make a Friday night or Saturday morning. I’ve therefore launched a new podcast which you can listen to on your computer or mobile phone. The idea is that you submit a question and my team and I will go away and find the answer. We’ll then publish a 15-minute podcast discussing the question and answer to give listeners a short but in-depth understanding about why something is the way it is, and what I’m trying to do about it. FILTON Avenue Primary School would like to thank people who have made so many kind donations so far! Tina Bailey says: “The children are enjoying using the donations from you to enhance their playtimes. However, as a school, we are constantly looking for more materials to develop different areas of our outside space. The items below are only suggestions, anything brought to us is greatly appreciated!”

AT the start of the year I was pleased to announce that, according to data released from the Department of Environment and Rural Affairs, Bristol is the leading city for recycling. The city ranks number one out of the eight English Core Cities with an increased recycling rate of 44.9% for 2016/17. This means Bristol is on track to meet our ambitious recycling rate of 50% by 2020. The stats show a further 1.6% increase in recycling since 2016/17, and confirms Bristol’s environmental credentials. Our rate is better than the other seven English core cities where it ranged from Birmingham at only 20.7% and Liverpool on 26.6%, while Manchester and Newcas-

tle achieved 38.56% and 38% respectively. The new data demonstrates that Bristol is well ahead of the game in terms of recycling with rates increasing rapidly and general waste tonnages going down. The figures also show a significant drop in the amount of waste sent to landfill, which fell 8%, from 27.9% to 19.9%. We’re committed to reaching our target, which is why we are investing in a fleet of new vehicles and trialling new ways of collecting recycling to help people to improve the rates even further. I’m really grateful for the work by the council’s waste company, Bristol Waste, who have worked to raise awareness and help residents

understand the small steps they can make to save resources, save the city money, and ultimately save the planet. Campaigns like the awardwinning food waste campaign ‘Slim My Waste – Feed My Face’ meant a 16% increase in the amount of food waste collected since June. That’s more than 700 tonnes of additional food waste collected to date; equivalent to 56 double-decker buses. When food waste composts naturally it generates CO2 which is bad for the environment. The additional waste diverted to date thanks to Slim My Waste is equal to 669 tonnes of CO2 savings, the same as the emissions of 142 cars. Plus, the additional biogas created will power an extra 180 households for a whole year. We know there is still a journey to go on and that we cannot do it alone, but by working with residents we can help Bristol waste nothing.

Orchard School’s Kacper joins premier league team LESS than two years ago Kacper Lopata was playing on Orchard School’s astroturf – today he’s rubbing shoulders with stars of the Premier League as a professional with Brighton and Hove Albion. The 17-year-old, who lived in Horfield and has now relocated to the south coast, says much of his success is down to the inspiration of the PE staff at Orchard. And he has thanked them for being tough with him when he was keen to return too early from a knee injury. On reflection he says he now knows they were only looking out for the best for him. He now trains in Brighton with the Premiership team,

rubbing shoulders with the top stars while playing for the U18 side as well as for Poland’s U18s. Kacper has always played football, as a young boy in Poland before moving to the UK. He said: “I always played football, ever since I can remember, I played a lot in Poland with my older brother Kuba, just on the street or wherever we could really. “But I started taking football seriously when I was in Year 7. A lot of that was due to the fact that there was a school football team that I wanted be a part of. “I ended up playing as a goalkeeper only because I though that that is the only position that I have a chance to actually play in as boys in other positions were

Kacper with his family as he signs for Brighton & Hove Albion better than me. “On certain days, Bristol City community would come in and we would play football for an hour or so after school for those who wanted to come. But other than that I just played on my own wherever I could for hours every day.” He is full of praise for the teachers at Orchard, not just in PE but others who were influential. He said: “There were a lot

of teachers that I looked up to like Mr Grafton or the PE staff because of how they carried themselves but a big one was Mr Coxon. No one would have known this but I always though that he’s just so influential.” He also has a message for the PE staff when he experienced one of the lowest points in his career so far – being released by Yeovil after a knee injury. “That was up there with the toughest things I’ve ever gone

through. Getting released feels like the end of the world for a boy that wants to be a footballer and on top of that being injured for a year. “It was a nightmare especially because my knee injury was so strange that sometimes It didn’t cause me any pain and sometimes it did. “Now I know that if I carried on playing with it I would have been out for a very long time. I remember many arguments with the PE staff as they were telling me that I can’t do PE even if I think I can and I’ve got to thank them for that.” He also has fond memories of being introduced to handball by Mr Pitt which could have led to him going down a different sporting route. Kacper was spotted during pre-season trials, with the help of SGS college coach David

Hockaday. At one stage it looked like it could he could be heading for Bristol City or Spurs but his agent told him Brighton were keen and before long he was signing his first professional contract. He said he still can’t quite believe it but, despite missing his family, has settled in well with the South Coast team. Orchard School head of sport Miss PembertonHeard said: “Kacper was always passionate about football. He would have stayed on the astro all day if he could. “He has worked hard, and shown true Orchard values in his determination and resilience. We were so happy when he emailed to say that he had signed for Brighton. It's great that he remembers his time with us so fondly.

Discover the next generation of hip and knee surgery SPIRE Bristol Hospital is leading the way in orthopaedic surgery and, working with an extensive team of leading consultants, we have become the private hospital of choice for hip and knee replacements across the region. The state-of-art Mako robotic arm is a precision tool now used by the highly qualified team of surgeons at our Robotics Centre helping to improve the precision of hip replacement and knee replacement surgery. How Mako works Based on preoperative CT scans, the Mako system generates a 3D model of a patient's knee or hip joint. This model is used by the surgeons to determine how much bone to remove, and where to place the implants that replace diseased sections of these bones. The robotic-arm assisted platform then identifies the amount of bone to be removed and this is visualised for the surgeon on a screen. This allows increased accuracy and correct placement of the implants.

The surgeon is free to remove bone until he reaches the boundaries prescribed during the planning stages. If the surgeon attempts to move outside these boundaries, the saw will turn off. This helps the surgeon minimise the trauma to the hip or knee and preserves the maximum amount of healthy tissue. Before surgery It all begins with a CT scan of the joint, which is used to generate a 3D virtual model of a patient’s unique anatomy. This model is loaded into the Mako system software and used to create a personalised preoperative plan. During the procedure In theatre, the surgeon is always in full control, with Mako assisting, based on the preoperative plan. The system also allows the surgeon to make adjustments to the plan during surgery, as required. When the surgeon prepares the bone for the implant, Mako guides them within a pre-defined area using real time interoperative feedback and helps

prevent moving outside planned boundaries. This enables a high degree of precision and accuracy in placing implants. Research studies have shown that compared to traditional surgery, Mako can perform joint replacement with two to three times greater accuracy. Following surgery At Spire Bristol, we’re not just interested in simply treating patients, we are passionate about looking after people and returning them to the lifestyle they know and love. After the procedure, the surgeon, nurses and physiotherapists will set goals to get patients back on the move, closely monitoring condition and progress. Our physio team are experts in post-surgical rehabilitation for patients who have undergone all types of orthopaedic surgery. With access to top level rehabilitation facilities, including a physio gym and studio, the best possible outcomes are enabled.

An increase in shed break-ins WE are seeing an increase in shed break-ins in the Horfield area. Bikes are being stolen. One person has been arrested and released under investigation. In the meantime, please increase your security around any outbuildings you have. Secure the side gate. Invest in a shed alarm and mark your property. Don’t forget to complete your Bike Passport – ensuring you make a note of your bike’s frame number so if your bike is stolen and we come across it, we can return it. This is where the link falls down as we do come across a lot of property that we can’t return – go and do it now! In the first two weeks of January, Horfield / Lockleaze saw 13 vehicle offences, the majority

being around the Filton Avenue area. Do not leave anything on show in your car, even loose change. It is far too tempting. If you use any local sports facilities please ensure you use the lockers provided. Over the Christmas period, one unfortunate victim regrettably left their bag by the pool side and had their car keys stolen. Please ensure you use the lockers provided, or don’t take any valuables in with you. STOP PRESS – I have just heard of another story whereby exactly the same thing has happened. These are easy pickings if you leave your keys easily accessible and visible. Homelessness is on the rise and a national concern, and we are seeing it locally here in Lock-

leaze. It is an emotive subject and for some a very difficult time. If you see us talking to someone that might be homeless, please let us do our job. We will always try to support a person who is homeless or begging, by signposting them to agencies which can help them with housing and addiction issues.

We do this in partnership with the council, at the first point of contact that we have with them. If the help is not taken up and persistent/aggressive begging continues, then we have a variety of tactics at our disposal to deal with anti-social behaviour. We receive numerous reports of people feeling scared and intimidated by people in shop entrances and cashpoints and our mission is to make people feel safe and be safe. If you do choose to give money to people begging, please do not hand money directly to them as this normally contributes towards feeding their habits. Please give instead to local charities that help them, such as St Mungo’s. Search for homeless projects in Bristol on the internet. Until next month, PCSO Charlotte

n COUNCILLOR’S VIEW

Cllr Gill Kirk

Cllr Claire Hiscott

I AM writing this on the day that we gathered in Gainsborough Square to plant a beautiful acer tree in memory of one of Lockleaze’s most loved and respected residents, Joy Langley, who very sadly passed away last September. Throughout her life Joy worked tirelessly for the benefit of the Lockleaze residents. She played a vital role in several organisations including Lockleaze Community Association, Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust and the North Bristol Advice Centre. It was wonderful to gather in Buzz cafe with so many of Joy’s family, friends and colleagues to share memories of her inspirational life. We will all miss her enormously but are so pleased

to have a lasting tribute to her in the heart of Lockleaze, where we can remember all she meant to us and all she did for the community. I have also been at the launch of our MP Darren Jones’ Transport Plan for North Bristol. With the increase in new housing, and increasing gridlock on our roads, Darren is proposing new transport hubs that bring together rail, bus, cycling (storage and hire) and car parking with electric vehicle charging. These hubs must have connecting and non-stop bus lanes and cycle paths into and out of Bristol City Centre and Cribbs Causeway, and potentially through the Avonmouth Industrial Estate. His sugges-

tions include Transport Hubs at the Portway P&R in Shirehampton, at Henbury (near the Rugby Club) and North of Lockleaze (on a brown field, not Stoke Park or greenbelt). Following strong protests and local campaigning, we have been reassured to hear the Mayor state categorically that there will be no Park and Ride built on the M32 at Sims Hill. This prime agricultural food-growing land will be protected, and an alternative site for a Park and Ride will be sought further north. This month will also see the launch of a new consultation focussing on improving congestion on Muller Rd, seeking more sustainable transport solutions in this area. Please keep an eye out for information and opportunities to share your views, January 14 saw a gathering at Lockleaze Sports Centre of local sports organisations, clubs, community groups and schools

to launch a Lockleaze Sports and Physical Activity Partnership. This meeting was facilitated by Andy Blackmore of Wesport and the aim of the Partnership is to identify and co-ordinate all the sports groups and activities currently available in the area, and share these more widely in the community. We hope this will encourage more people, of all ages and abilities to get involved in some sort of physical activity they enjoy, whether that be team sports, personal fitness, walking, couch to 5k, dancing, or getting out volunteering in green spaces. There will be a focus as well on holiday clubs and activites for young people. Please remember councillor drop-in surgeries continue to run on the first Saturday of each month at The Hub, Gainsborough Square, 12.30-2pm. plans then please come along to the drop-in on Friday, March 1 from 4.30pm to 7pm at Horfield CofE primary school. The initial consultation had a great attendance and the council has tried to incorporate residents’ views. It would great to see you – why not combine it with your Window Wanderland walk? I’m pleased to be working with the council and local residents looking at ways to protect Horfield Common from traveller caravans – I’m hoping we can have some plans ready soon. At City Hall I am part of the new working group to make Bristol Carbon Neutral by 2030 and I would love to hear your views on how to reduce pollution and energy use in the city. Both for our health and the climate I really want to see Bristol make progress. The Mayor has been criticised by central government for his delays on

tackling pollution, and I’m determined to hold him to account on this. Our children are currently breathing highly polluted air and this must be tackled. Finally, I hope that February isn’t too chilly (or snowy) and that I see you at one of these events in the coming weeks. I really find being a councillor for Horfield a real privilege when I see so much great stuff going on and so much more to be done. I really value everyone’s support, emails and phone calls. Please keep them coming! Contact as usual cllr.claire. hiscott@bristol.gov.uk Tel 07970 546 509, Twitter @ClaireHiscott, Facebook: Councillor Claire Hiscott.

A pharmacist can often assist... THE definition of Self Care is “the actions that people take for themselves, on behalf of and with others in order to develop, protect, maintain and improve their health, wellbeing or wellness”. In other words, it means taking individual responsibility when you have a minor condition which doesn’t normally need medical care from a doctor or nurse to get better. In practice this means that you decide that you can manage your own symptoms without seeing a clinician. Self care is good for you. Being empowered with the confidence and information to look after yourself when you can, and visit the GP when you need to, gives you greater control of your own health and encourages healthy behaviour that helps prevent ill health in the longterm. In many cases people can take care of their own minor ailments, reducing the number of GP consultations and helping

But what if you feel you need some advice before you are able to self-care? For instance, if you’re not sure if your condition is minor, or one that goes away of its own accord, i.e. a virus, or if you just want advice on how to relieve the symptoms. The good news is, your local pharmacist can help you. Local pharmacies provide NHS services in the same way as GP practices – and pharmacists train for five years in the use of medicines before they qualify as health professionals. What’s more, it’s a walk-in service, open all day. These are the common conditions that people can often manage for themselves: n Coughs and colds n Sprains and strains

COMING to Horfield this month, to brighten a February evening, a comedy by Michael Palin. Faced with a family gathering, world-weary Stephen Febble does his best to be difficult. When his daughter, her dreary husband Alan, their precocious child and – not least – the dog come to stay for the weekend it’s enough to make him reach for the whisky, and for the sarcasm. The climax arrives on Saturday night when his patient wife Virginia has laid on a dinner party and the chiropodist comes too. This amateur production of “The Weekend” is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd, and is being performed at Horfield Parish Hall on Wellington Hill from February 20 to 23. The doors and bar will be open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Tickets cost £10 and are available from the Box Office on 0117 969 5716 or by visiting www. horfieldtheatre.co.uk.
