Duke is given tour of hospital NORTH Bristol NHS Trust welcomed HRH the Duke of Gloucester to Southmead Hospital to meet the Move Makers who recently were given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The popular Move Maker volunteers were initially recruited for a month to help patients and visitors find their way around Southmead Hospital’s new Brunel building during the move into the new hospital in May 2014.

But the Move Makers, who were inspired by the Games Makers of the London 2012 Olympics, proved to be so popular with people coming into the new building it was decided to keep them on indefinitely. During the visit the Duke of Gloucester was taken on a tour of the hospital, met a number of the Move Makers and was treated to a performance by the Move Makers Choir.

TRADERS from Gloucester Road are trying to do their bit for the environment and encourage their customers to do the same. Planters on the pavements outside the Gloucester Road Central shops were created by volunteers from Avon Wildlife Trust as part of the My Wild City campaign, when Bristol was the European Green Capital in 2015. The idea grew from the success of the reclaimed bath full of plants that Sarah Thorp, owner of Room 212, had put outside her shop. After she sourced funding from the Neighbourhood Partnership, planters were put along the whole stretch of shops, which many traders have continued to care for including the Golden Lion, Odd Sox, Joe’s Bakery and Alchemy 198. Speaking about the impact the planters have had, Sarah said: “Mr Patel (pictured) from Crawfords Newsagents takes enormous pride in the huge sunflowers they grow every year,

along with sweet peas and flowering shrubs. Proof that much can be grown in a tiny patch on a busy high street - for the benefit of humans and insects!” Sarah is also a member of the Extinction Rebellion North Bristol group as she says she is becoming more and more aware of the climate emergency that society faces. She said: “I heard a speaker at the XR Summer Action say that people listen to their

friends and hairdressers more than they do politicians and scientists. I have many discussions in my shop about the environment and how our systems and way of thinking need to change to create a safe future. Customers are generally very switched on to these problems and are keen to exchange ideas.” Many traders are also concerned about the impact that pollution from idling cars along Gloucester Road could be having on the health of local residents. As Sarah explained: “Myself, fellow traders and many customers agree that cars, vans and trucks should be stopped from idling when not in traffic. In fact, it’s illegal and carries a fine. Pollution from vehicles parked up and left idling carries into our shops, businesses and homes. Perhaps readers might be interested in starting a campaign?” Finola Kelly owns Nola Interiors, and she says her ethos is to source, promote and sell good

quality, environmentally friendly products, including paint, textiles, rugs and homeware. She said: “Good quality products last longer, avoiding the need to constantly throw away and replace items, which contributes to environmental pollution.” Katie Wallis is from Fig, and is also very aware of the climate emergency. “We are adjusting the packaging we all use,” she said. “We will be phasing out cellophane bags to protect our cards, not buying any more bubble wrap instead reusing any we have, and we are very happy to reuse any that customers care to return and that we receive in the post.” “The majority of us have always walked or cycled to work. We are all about shopping local and have been so well supported over the last 10 years by our mainly local customers.” To find out more about the Extinction Rebellion North Bristol group, visit: xrbristol.org.uk.

Home of cricket is transformed

GLOUCESTERSHIRE Cricket have put the finishing touches to a major revamp of the Bristol County Ground. Featuring bespoke street art designs and installations, new signage and painting works, the home of Gloucestershire Cricket was transformed in time for the England Women’s Ashes T20 match and the club’s five Bristol Vitality Blast T20 fixtures in August. Spectators passing through the Grace Gates at the Nevil Road entrance to the ground can view the creations of Silent Hobo, the street artist who has worked with the club to bring images of cricket and the city of Bristol to life on six of its large walls. In addition a giant yellow cricket ball, featuring the club crest, is depicted bursting out of the main entrance wall to provide a 3D element to these artworks. Silent Hobo has been commissioned to create many artworks all over the UK and

Europe for clients such as the London 2012 Olympic Games, Google, Facebook and the National Trust. Recently he has collaborated with Bristol Food Connections to create a twostorey mural on what makes Bristol food unique, and he has been a long-time collaborator to transform the look and feel of Montpelier train station. The extensive project was born out of the desire to better reflect the club’s brand and colours – yellow and black – around the ground and be in keeping with its city and community. Will Brown, chief executive of Gloucestershire Cricket,

explained why the club commissioned numerous street art works: “It’s important to us at Gloucestershire Cricket to reflect our place in the city and community; Bristol is one of the most internationally renowned street art cities and the Gloucester Road area itself is a haven of colourful street art, reflecting its creative neighbourhood. “Street art is something that has helped establish Bristol as an international visitor destination and we have worked closely with the team at Visit Bristol to ensure consistency in approach in marketing the city. “The designs used on our walls – which celebrate our city and that cricket is a game for all ages, genders and races – is something that will help to bring our ground to life, help to attract a new audience to the game and our venue, and ensure that the Bristol County Ground is more easily identifiable to visitors and spectators.”

Orchard school pupils impress with GCSEs

ORCHARD School Bristol continues to go from strength to strength with impressive GCSE results. There were 122 top grades achieved across all subjects, representing a significant improvement on the results last year. Students at the school in Filton Road, Horfield, did especially well in English, science, geography and languages. Headteacher Julia Hinchliffe said: “Our pupils have demonstrated real commitment and resilience, working so hard for their GCSE results. “There are many personal triumphs within these results, with some pupils reaching multiple top grades and others achieving passes beyond their wildest dreams.” They included Maryam Tariq from Horfield who is heading for Colston’s School sixth form after passing eight GCSEs with top grades.

The best performing pupils at Orchard School

She said: “If you want something you have to work hard.” Fellow student Alfie RylattGreen passed all nine of his GCSEs with grade 8s in biology and history. Alfie, from Lockleaze, said: “I’m just so happy. I did work hard and everything has come out so well.”

Yasmin Lasku from Horfield excelled in English literature, history and chemistry amongst her eight GCSEs. She is also going on to Colston’s Sixth Form to take A levels and is aiming for a career in politics. Yasmin said: “I worked hard but I wasn’t expecting such

amazing results.” And Cade Maxwell is also celebrating after strong grades in all eight GCSEs. He did especially well in maths, history, English and chemistry. Cade, from Horfield, will be taking maths, science and economics at St Mary Redcliffe sixth form. Orchard School’s impressive results come just two months after an Ofsted report confirmed its “Good” status. The 900-place school continues to attract more students with Year 7 again oversubscribed for this coming September for the second year running. Mrs Hinchliffe said: “Every single one of our pupils can walk away feeling proud of their achievements and the progress they have made. “I also want to thank our inspirational teachers who have enabled our learners to achieve these great results.”

Confident Junior and Senior Open Mornings

PARLIAMENT has been in recess during August, so I have taken the opportunity to enjoy a couple of weeks of family time whilst keeping abreast of the government’s seemingly incessant push for a no-deal Brexit. I’ve always been clear about my position on Brexit: it’s bad for our country and our city. A no-deal outcome - where practically all of our trade deals are cancelled overnight - will cause generational economic damage and put us at the mercy of Trump-endorsed trade deal with the United States which can’t match our current trade with the EU. Analysis has shown around 1400 jobs could be lost in my constituency alone if we leave under a no-deal scenario. I have continued to meet local businesses and unions, from small local businesses to global multinationals with a presence in or around Bristol. I simply can’t vote for a weaker British economy, reduced security cooperation, and financial hardship for local workers, businesses and public services. The good news is that my one vote, on your behalf, has already changed British history. We’ve already avoided potential no deal

outcomes with a majority of just one vote in the House of Commons. Who your MP is and how they vote on this defining issue has never been more important. As I promised in my 2017 election address: I have been consistent in campaigning and voting for a public ratification of what we do next (a so called Peoples Vote). I will continue to try and secure that public vote and, if successful, I will campaign to remain. In seeking to achieve these outcomes I’m happy to work with any politician, and any constituent, regardless of their party affiliation. To ensure I continue to hear your views and answer any questions you have about Brexit as we approach the 31st October deadline, I’ll be hosting another round of Brexit Briefings in October. These will be advertised on my website (www.darren-jones. co.uk) and my Facebook page soon. If you’re not online and would like details of the events, please call my office on 0117 959 6545. Your Champion in Bristol I’ve also been using time during recess to contact residents across Bristol North West with updates on some of my work in

the constituency including the A4018, North Bristol Transport Plan, Stoke Lodge and climate change. I hope you found this update useful. Tackling Climate Change remains high on my agenda – I recently met with local members of Extinction Rebellion to talk about their campaign and will also be hosting my own ‘Climate Emergency: Conversation’ on 14th September at the Eastfield Inn in Henleaze. If you’re interested in coming along (they’ll be time for a discussion, Q and A as well as a short update on my environmental work), please book via www.darrenjones.co.uk/contact/cafepolitics or call 0117 959 6545. I have also been in touch with YTL – the potential developers of a new arena in Filton – as they prepare to submit their planning application to organise an exclusive meeting, which I’ll chair, for residents to attend. We’ll have time to review the planning application, ask questions from the project team and have a quick look around the hangars. The

meeting will be held early evening Friday, October 4. If you’d like to come please get in touch. Thanks also to the team at Love Horfield for inviting me to join their July litter-pick. It’s always fantastic to see people volunteering to help their community – do check out the group as they run a variety of events and clubs locally. As always, if you have any questions or need my help just drop me an e-mail, call, write to me or message me on my Facebook page. To chat in person, pop along to one of my coffee mornings or pub politics events or ask me a question during my Wednesday night Facebook Live Q&As from 7.30pm. All the details can be found on my website at www.darrenjones.co.uk/contact/cafepolitics You can also find me on Facebook at fb.com/darrenjonesmp, on Twitter at @darrenpjones or sign up to my monthly newsletter at www.darren-jones.co.uk/ sign-up. THERE’S something exciting happening up at the Wordsworth Centre here in Lockleaze. What for a long time has been an unused space has been reopened by Bristol social enterprise Ecomotive to build the first ever SNUG eco-home. And they want you to be involved! The SNUG is designed to be an affordable home with low energy use, low bills and low carbon. It is part of the Lockleaze Loves Homes initiative run by the Neighbourhood Trust and part of a wider UK movement rethinking and redesigning how and where we live. Home-Made Lockleaze is a programme of fun and informative events based at the Wordsworth Centre, and other local venues which aim to get the local community thinking about, and involved in, how Lockleaze homes, both new and old, can become good for people and the planet. Homes are the places that sustain us and give us security,

therefore the homes we live in play a big part in our wellbeing. The cost of running them, and the cost of renting or buying them have a big impact on our lives. So how we create them and live in them really matters, and it is possible to do things in new ways that better serve our needs. If you would like to know more about how to create a home, you can volunteer to help build the UK’s first SNUG home here in Lockleaze. Or if you simply want to skill up a bit to make your own home more energy efficient, or to find out more about community led housing in Lockleaze and beyond, to talk about what we can do at home to tackle climate change, and many

other topics please come along. No previous experience or skills necessary. Details of all the events can be found at www.ecomotive. org and the programme can be downloaded from the Ecomotive and Lockleaze Hub website and local facebook pages. This project has been supported by Bristol Community Energy Fund and other partners such as The C.H.E.E.S.E Project, Tiny Homes Community Bristol, Bristol Energy Network and others. Home-Made Lockleaze leads into a Lockleaze housing festival on October 26 and the Bristol Housing Festival that runs through late October.

Bristol already hosts fantastic examples of housing projects delivered by residents and community organisations, so it is possible to do things differently to the standard, expensive housebuilding. Bristol also has a wealth of people with experience and skills in different areas that can help community-led housing projects happen. Starting with people’s real needs, then bringing together land, finance, skills and experience with your enthusiasm and interest, we can create more people-led housing projects that strengthen communities. The activities and events over the next couple of months, are a taster of how the Wordsworth space can be a resource for Lockleaze, and can be used to help develop a new kind of housing for the local area, as well as Bristol and beyond. n Home-made Lockleaze: see pages 12&13

LITTERING and fly-tipping is a hot topic and also a subject that I am quite passionate about as there is no excuse, simple as that, no excuse. There are enough bins around and facilities to tip and recycle here in Bristol. It has a negative impact on our streets and costs tax-payers and the council thousands of pounds each year. This includes dropping litter on the street or from your vehicle – this includes chewing gum and cigarette butts. Graffiti: this includes painting or damaging a tree or any road signs; fly-posting & fly-tipping. These cover various fines and

for further details you can visit Bristol City Council’s website. As I said, there is no excuse and it doesn’t matter what you say. Use it, bag-it and bin-it. By the time you read my column, schools will be back so this is a polite reminder, please park safe and legally. If you can, walk to school. If not then please allow enough time to park and walk your child to school. Again, there is no excuse for parking illegally. I would rather your child be late than in danger and parking on any restricted yellow lines, zig-zags, pavements, carries a fixed penalty up to £100. BY the time you read this, Bristol City Council’s proposed Compulsory Purchase Order of the Gainsborough pub should have taken place. The pub has lain abandoned and derelict on the square for many years and is an eyesore, a waste of land and, since this summer’s fire, a potential danger. That fire required the efforts of many fire fighters to tackle the blaze and its ferocity caused a great deal of alarm. Now finally action is taking place. We have been campaigning and lobbying for the pub site to be brought back into use for years and are aware of how much local residents want action. The situation has been especially frustrating since Gainsborough Square’s redevelopment and the building of the Hub and the new flats some six years ago, both of which have helped to transform an important area of public space for the better. Gainsborough Square is at the heart of this part of Lockleaze. It

really is not good enough that it has taken so long to tackle the problem of the pub. Yet the current powers for the city council to deal with such situations are limited and time consuming. I am delighted that we can now move forward and do something with the pub site. I know people will have different views about how it could be used but, with pubs struggling to stay open across the UK in the face of competition from supermarkets, reopening it as a pub cannot be part of the council’s remit. In my view, developing the site for much-needed housing together with the option of using the Gainsborough Square frontage for some kind of social space is the way forward. Lockleaze urgently needs new homes if it is to thrive, and it needs Gainsborough Square’s role as the heart of community to be fully restored.

SEPTEMBER means ‘back to school’ for our children and I hope everyone is settling in to their new classes and schools in Horfield. I wish all our lovely local schools a very happy and successful term. I was very glad to hear the new Prime Minister promise fairer funding for schools – fingers crossed that Bristol benefits! Also, I’m really pleased that we have extra police funding on its way too, Horfield has had a spate of crimes over the summer which has really spoilt the holiday season. The new police station located at the hospital is great to now have a real presence back in the ward. I have had many residents complain about van dwellers and static caravans parked on Kellaway Avenue, which are causing a lot of upset and have recently been the target of vandals. The Mayor has just published a new policy on the issue, which sadly is so vague it isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. The policy gives no clear guidance on what is unacceptable and says

every issue will be judged on a ‘case by case’ basis, which means something and nothing. I am so disappointed. I have sent in my questions to Marvin and his cabinet and am demanding he takes stronger action. Even simply changing the parking restrictions around the common would make a difference. Watch this space. Later this month I am bringing together councillors from across all parties to look at using new technology to reduce air pollution in our most smokey roads. We are going to hear from some innovative companies so I really hope an affordable solution can be found. I’ll sign off on a positive note – my huge thanks to local residents who are regularly reporting local problems to me, especially flytipping, antisocial behaviour and street items needing repair, it really helps because I can’t be everywhere at once.

I HAVE recently been in touch with our new Prime Minister and new government ministers to update them on the progress we’re making and what we can do to deliver more for the West of England. I am always championing our region and I’m confident the government will see that we’re making a real difference, investing to improve where we live, with ambitious schemes such as our MetroWest rail plans which include seven new train stations. I have long been a supporter of devolution because I believe local people who live and work in the region are best placed to understand and respond to the challenges and opportunities that we face. I am pleased the new Prime Minister has signalled that he would like to give more powers and investment for local towns, cities and regions to spend on their priorities. I look forward to exploring how this can benefit the West of England. On July 19 I was delighted to

join regional business, academia and council leaders for the launch of the West of England’s Local Industrial Strategy. The Strategy sets out how we will work towards raising productivity levels and create high-quality, well paid jobs across the West of England. This strategy is a blueprint for the region which will enable us to showcase our strengths and ambitions with both the government and businesses looking to invest in the region. To boost productivity and strengthen our economy, I am determined to ensure that everybody can get around the region with good transport connections, and that people have the skills that businesses need. This, coupled with building enough well designed and affordable homes, will help ensure that we continue to be one of the country’s most attractive and prosperous places to live and work.

of achieving this is promoting mental health and wellbeing with a focus on early intervention. Crucially, our schools, colleges and universities must play a role in enabling our young people to grow into resilient and confident adults. Our daily lives may sometimes be stressful. Ensuring young people have skills to cope with this is key to preventing more serious issues in later life. The first steps involve helping them see how to talk openly about their feelings and care for themselves and others. But I will continue to push for improvements to accessing mental health services; promoting and creating positive, fun and challenging opportunities to help children and young people develop their confidence, creativity and resilience. Or Thrive Bristol programme aims to improve mental health and wellbeing of all, with a focus on those with greatest need.

OUR city is a great place to be over the summer with free cultural festivals and historical attractions not only bringing citizens but also visitors from across the country and beyond. In the past few months, we have seen engaging and exciting events including St Pauls Carnival, Bristol Pride, the Harbour Festival and the International Balloon Fiesta. But the nights are drawing in and many of us will be going back to school or work after a well-earned break. However, this transition is challenging for some. And knowing how to handle change is critical, especially for our young people. Having worked in the NHS in mental health and wellbeing, this is and continues to be a key priority of mine. Bristol has a higher than national average rate of residents with mental ill health. This is a devastating reality and one that I am not willing to ignore. I want to ensure that we all thrive in a city that supports both our physical and mental health. Part

AS many of you will be aware The Old Library on Muller Road was taken over by a small group of passionate and motivated residents back in 2016 in an effort to save the local resource. With little more than determination, a huge amount of good will and hard work South Lockleaze and Purdown Group was formed and took over the space. It is a truly fantastic example of how a community can mobilise together with shared aims and make old spaces work in new ways and most importantly keep the community resources alive. It is 100% run by volunteers and opens to the public as a community cafe serving lunch (on Friday and Saturday) and drinks and light snacks on Wednesday. The Old Library functions as a trust Library where people can borrow books, DVDs and games and return them when they are finished with them, so if you have not yet visited then please pop

in, our opening times our on our website. Free opportunities and activities during the week are also on offer including a conversation club for those that do not have English as a first language on a Wednesday afternoon and an open drop in advice from Get Well Get On for employed people who are challenged by their physical or mental health and need support to stay in work. There is an inclusive choir on Friday mornings singing upbeat songs with actions which is welcoming to anyone who fancies a lively singalong. There are also a range of other activities throughout the week including community yoga, a quiz night, board game night, Stay and Play, Sling Library as well as many other activities. To find out more please visit the website www.theoldlibrary.org.uk or follow us on Facebook for regular updates and announcements.

In September and October we have a very busy schedule and lots of exciting events going on so please do join in. We would like to share a few of our highlights that we are really looking forward to. The biggest and most important one for the diary is that we are going to be celebrating our third anniversary party! September 21st 1pm to 6pm our doors and gorgeous garden will be open to everyone to come and help us celebrate and fundraise to keep on going. Expect plentiful cakes, a bar, bbq and live music as well as many fun activities such as throw a lightbulb, make your own flower garland and press your own apple juice! We are also delighted to announce that The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Jos Clark will be attending the event and will be accompanied by Stephen Williams so please come along and join us

all in celebrating three years of The Old Library. We hope to see you there. Buzz Lockleaze and The Old Library have been working in partnership and have been lucky enough to be chosen to be a part of the Celebration of Age Festival this year. On October 17 from 1.30pm to 4.30pm we will be holding a 1950s Remember When …… event. There will be a chance to reminisce by singing classic songs of that era with the wonderful Kate Staniforth, a test of your memory with a fun quiz and a great classic movie shown to finish off the afternoon. It is a totally FREE event, transport can be arranged from the local area and afternoon tea and refreshments will be provided. For more information or to book a place email hello@ theoldlibrary.org.uk or call Buzz on 01172 690 006. You can contact Lara at hello@theoldlibrary.org.uk.

WITH the school holidays over, I’ve been reflecting on the exceptionally busy summer we’ve experienced. From the Extinction Rebellion protests that caused traffic mayhem in and around Bristol to wonderful events including Glastonbury, Pride and the Harbourside Festival, the police have worked really hard the last few months to keep our communities safe. I know officers will always go above and beyond to support such events and I want to say thank you to all those individuals and teams who have been involved for your hard work. I’m sure you would have also heard about our new Prime Minister’s promise to recruit 20,000 more police officers to make our streets safer. This is a commitment that I very much welcome. We’ve had to deal with years of funding cuts and had to make £78 million worth of savings, all while protecting officer numbers wherever possible and dealing

with increasingly more complex and serious crime. Avon and Somerset Police is in a great position in terms of learning and development opportunities for new recruits, especially with the launch of the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA). Accredited by the College of Policing and launched this year, the PCDA is being rolled our across the country. Avon and Somerset Police is the first force in the South West to move its initial police learning to the PCDA, partnering with UWE to offer a rewarding learning experience to our new recruits as well as a starting salary of £20k. Apprentice officers will spend around three-quarters of their time learning on the job and the rest studying or in the classroom, becoming familiar with the skills they need to do the job. This is a great opportunity for individuals to pursue a varied and interesting role as part of the force, while gaining a qualification at the same time.

Helping you increase your fitness NATIONAL Fitness Day is on September 25. What are you going to be doing to take care of your body? You could go to the gym, play football with friends or go to a climbing centre and do some bouldering; there’s something for all ages and all degrees of fitness. We need to address the fact that exercise floods the body with feel good hormones and yet we seem to avoid it like the plague due to its tedious nature. Exercise doesn’t have to be in the gym; you can be creative with it and there are also a lot of different activities in the community. The general goal that people should strive to achieve is 30 minutes of activity which won’t feel like a long time if you are having fun with it. Swimming is a great activity for all ages and all abilities. Most leisure centres have a swimming pool and usually have different activities available. Horfield Leisure Centre has different swim sessions for

example: Ladies swimming, Disney Inspired Family fun swim sessions and senior swimming. Swimming is especially a great activity for elderly people who may suffer from joint pain simply because swimming is a low impact activity that doesn’t take a huge toll on your joints compared to other activities like running. For those people who need an

adrenaline rush: a great option is mountain biking. Going on jumps and large downhill stretches at breakneck speeds might just be what you need along with a great workout from riding up large hills. A great place to go mountain biking is in Ashton Court but you can just about go for any wooded area. You can also go with a group of friends; all you need is a helmet and a bike. There are some people who just can’t be bothered to leave the house and that’s understandable but that doesn’t mean you can’t exercise! The internet is a wonderful thing where you can access a tonne of home workouts or even try out yoga which is great for both the body and the mind. Yoga is truly for all levels of fitness and is good if you wish to improve your flexibility. Check out the NHS Choices Gym Free Workouts and 10 Minute Workouts which means you don’t have to leave the house or spend any money on gym membership to exercise!

However, some people just like a good old run and it’s a great way to improve cardiovascular endurance. All you need is an open area to run and you are set. Of course running can get boring which can be easily sorted – you can just drag your friends out with you and all of sudden you’re also helping your friends to be active too! You could take part in a local parkrun which is held every Saturday at 9am. Check out the parkrun website for an event near to you. To get you started, we would be happy for patients to join us at Eastville parkrun on the 5th of October – look out for us in our Monks Park T-shirts. We’d love to see you there! This piece was written by Alonzo Kallarachully, a Yr 13 Work Experience Student from Bristol Cathedral Choir School. Thank you Alonzo!
