Lord Mayor’s Medals for ‘going extra mile’ THE Lord Mayor’s Medals are presented annually to individuals in recognition for their hard work in going the extra mile for their community. A total of 16 medal winners gathered in the Mansion House on April 11 to receive their medals from Lord Mayor Cleo Lake. Lockleaze and Horfield were both represented at the awards ceremony with Victoria Tiley and Rob Webber amongst the winners. Lockleaze’s Victoria, pictured, has used her experience to transform the lives of vulnerable young people and their communities. She works with BCfm as a presenter, in sales and as partnership manager. Over the past 20 years, Victoria has been a board member, mentor and director, working with organisations including the Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust

and the Vench. Her projects have been diverse and have attracted all members of the community through events in Lockleaze, Easton, Eastville and St Pauls – and all roles have been voluntary. Victoria says: “Being nominated by the communities that I support is a great honour and I feel very humbled and blessed. “I would just like to thank all the people that nominated me for this award. I do not do the things I do for the community for any thank you or praises, I do it because I am passionate about my community and other communities that need my help. I do it willingly and with passion and love. “I know through experience what poverty does to families and communities and how vulnerable our elders are. And I just try and do as much as I can to help the people that I can. In doing

so hoping to make their life a bit happier.” Horfield’s Rob has been leader in charge of Manor Farm Boys Club for the last 20 years. The club provides opportunities for young people to participate in sporting and other

activities. It has flourished under his leadership. After becoming a member at 11, Rob became a volunteer helper as a teenager and taking on the role of leader at short notice while working nights and supporting a young family.

Course provides parents with food for thought PARENTS and carers at Fairfield High School (FHS) have been treated to a fascinating, free course to learn about how food and herbs can dramatically impact on mood and brain function. This six-week course has focused on demonstrating how different types of food really can affect levels of anxiety and depression, frustration and aggression. Poignantly, it also shows how some foods can help engagement in learning, concentration plus memory; vital for children as they continue their secondary school education. The Year 7 parents/carers, together with their children, then have the opportunity each week to put their newfound knowledge into practice as they prepare delicious nutritious recipes with their children to take home for that evening’s dinner. The structured course, run by Bristol Health & Nutrition, and funded by Bristol City

May, 2019

Council, focuses on the following outcomes: understanding which foods to eat more/less of in order to support brain health and how to make dietary changes; feeling more inspired and confident

to try new healthy foods and/ or recipes, understanding how sleep, stress and exercise also play a key role in health and well being and how to make healthy lifestyle changes, plus being

able to implement basic kitchen health and safety in the class and at home. Christina Quinnell, parent at FHS and attendee of the course, said: “This course has changed my shopping and cooking choices enormously, for example I’ve just ordered my first organic fruit and veg box in over a decade, which I’m quite excited about! “I’ve learnt some really fascinating things about the effect of good nutrition on our bodies and minds I just didn’t know before. “The information on pesticides, gluten and sugar is delivered in a non-scary way, but the small changes I’ve learnt have had a significant impact.” Amanda Bridgewater, Vice Principal at FHS, said: “We would like to say a big thank you to Caroline, Bristol City Council plus all the parents and carers who have invested time to make this course a reality.”

School could install bollards to tackle dangerous parking A HORFIELD primary school is investigating installing ‘pencil’ bollards in a bid to end the dangerous parking seen every day at drop-off and pick-up times. St Teresa’s Primary in Luckington Road has had problems for many years with drivers mounting the pavement, driving on the pavement and also blocking the driveways of local residents. Now head teacher Sam Land has had discussions with local councillor Claire Hiscott (Horfield) and a bid is being made for funding the bollards. Mrs Land said: “I live in fear each day of a child potentially being seriously injured or killed as the road outside school, some parents have a total disregard for this. “On a daily basis I witness parents parking on yellow zigzags, mounting the pavement

and driving on it and on occasion road rage. “We are desperately in need of help before something serious happens. “We have supported the Walk to School scheme, run by Living Street, encouraging parents to park five minutes away and walk in, sent letters home to parents (from myself and from the children themselves), reminders in the weekly newsletter and stationed staff outside, requested a heightened attendance from our traffic warden and PCSO, but problems still persist.” Cllr Hiscott visited the school last month to see for herself the problems at drop-off time. She said it was possible that, with her support, the school’s bid could be successful for money to pay for child-friendly bollards which would make mounting the kerb on the school side of Luck-

ington Road impossible. She said: “This is a real problem for many primary schools and I saw all manner of dangerous driving when I visited, including motorists actually driving on the pavement. “I am hopeful we can support St Teresa’s in making a bid for funding for bollards to guarantee one side of the road being totally safe. “The pencil bollards have been used outside other schools

to good effect. We will know by the end of term if the bid is successful and I will push for installation over the summer holidays.” Pupils at St Teresa’s have also taken their own action with Year 6 pupils using a persuasive writing task to write letters to parents urging them to drive safely outside the school. One said: “It is scary for all of us because you never know when something bad might happen.”

Green Doors project shares energy tips THE Bristol Green Doors weekend took place on May 11 and 12, allowing people to visit homes which have been made more comfortable, cheaper to heat and kinder to the environment. Twelve homes across the city opened their doors for the event, and visitors were able to pop in and be shown round by friendly householders as they shared their knowledge and experience of installing a range of energy saving improvements. Covering everything from low cost refurbs and installations to ambitious whole-house retrofits - there really was something for everyone. Since 2010 thousands of people all over Bristol have visited green open homes at these free events, finding inspiration and real-life tips that they have gone on to use in their own homes. Bristol Rovers announce return of the ‘Gas Girls’ BRISTOL Rovers have announced they will be launching a Senior Women’s team and an Under 18’s team for the forthcoming 2019/20 season, which will be playing here in Lockleaze at the Lockleaze Sports Centre. Bristol Rovers Women’s have formally applied to enter the Gloucestershire County Women’s Football League while an Under 18’s team has applied to enter the Gloucestershire FA Under 18’s League. It will be the first time since 2005 that the blue and white quarters of Bristol Rovers will be represented in the English Women’s Football Pyramid. The Gas Girls were initially formed in 1998, starting out in the South West League and in 2005, Bristol Rovers Women’s FC became known as Bristol Academy WFC under a new partnership agreement with South Gloucestershire and Stroud College. In 2011 the club changed its name to Bristol Academy WFC and finally became Bristol City Women’s Football Club in 2015. Adam Tutton, Community Trust CEO and Women’s Chairman, said: “We are thrilled to

announce the relaunch of the Gas Girls. “Over the last 18 months our Women’s and Girls’ football provision has grown enormously, culminating in a Wembley Stadium appearance for our EFL U13 Girl’s team from Mangotsfield School. “To support this growth and further encourage females to play football across Bristol, we have decided to reform Bristol Rovers Women, aka the Gas Girls. The team will initially be a competitive, participation-based club open to all abilities rather than a focus on elite level football. We hope to give as many women and girls, regardless of background, the choice to represent Bristol Rovers. Head of Women’s and Girls football at Bristol Rovers Community Trust, Nathan HallettYoung, said: “The development of the women’s game is growing at a considerable rate across the country and I’ve witnessed the growth first hand with my role over the last few years. “A participant-focused senior women’s team is the next logical step for our programme to progress and I can’t wait to get

started and continue to develop the women’s game under the banner of Bristol Rovers Community Trust.” Bristol Rovers Women’s will be recruiting players throughout

May, June and July at the £6m Lockleaze Sports Centre. If you would like to attend one of the open training sessions or find out more, please see www.bristolroverscommunity.org.uk/gasgirls

It takes place from June 1 to 7 every year and is an opportunity to celebrate volunteering in all its diversity. There are plenty of volunteering roles here in our community at North Bristol Advice Centre write about their current work and vacancies. n YOUR MP writes for the Voice

Alas, it’s still Brexit on the agenda...

I LONG for the day when I get the chance to write this monthly update without it being entirely dominated by Brexit. Whether it’s finally dealing with the productivity challenges in the economy so we can start to see wage growth again, or transforming our public services, or how we solve the housing crisis or even some bigger problems like meeting negative emissions to tackle climate change. But, alas, Brexit it is. The past month has been a crucial time with one main aim in Parliament: to stop the government taking the UK out of the EU without a deal. The vast majority of parliamentarians know this would be a disaster for our economy and security, and so I’m pleased to report back (even though you’ll already know!) that we managed to force the government’s hand to agree a new extension. Our indicative voting process, however, hasn’t been overly successful with no alternative agreed on. We have learnt, though, that a public ratification of a closer trading relationship with the EU has the most support of MPs. Without any surprise, readers will know that I continue to call for a public vote with remain on the ballot and, after months and months of working hard and campaigning on this, we now need to bring it home. I along with many colleagues won’t vote for any deal unless it includes seeking the consent of the public. If you disagree with my stance on this, please do let me know. April was a bit quieter for me on other fronts, albeit only politically. That’s because my wife, Lucy, and I were delighted to welcome our second daughter, Edie, to the world at the start of April. Edie came just over three weeks early but thanks to rule changes in the Commons a few months ago I have been able to vote “by proxy” via Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy. Your Champion in Bristol Thanks to everyone who contacted my office or attended my meeting to share their views and concerns about the council’s transport proposals for the Muller Road area. Whilst most constituents acknowledged there

is a problem with congestion at peak times, the major issue seems to build up at the Eastgate roundabout. I’ve asked the council what’s being done about the roundabout as it fell outside the remit of these plans. I’ve also shared my concerns about potential loss of parking and the impact that would have on The Old Library, signage of cycle routes, rat running and the creation of bus lanes for buses that don’t run 24/7. I’ve since reviewed the results of the consultation, which had over 580 responses sent to the council, and I’ve been advised the council will draft a consultation report that incorporates the consultation feedback that guides towards a preferred option going forward. This will be released alongside a design review that will identify changes to the design within the next two months. I’ll share further updates when I have them. I was also delighted to join the launch of a Community Plan

for Lockleaze back in March. Launched by the Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust, along with input from hundreds of residents, the plan covers everything that affects quality of life for all ages: including jobs, transport, social spaces, youth provision, the environment and arts and culture. The community plan will be a basis for community action from a range of individuals and organisations and help to guide the area’s ambitions for many years to come and I’d encourage residents to get involved. Whilst we’re highlighting the work of volunteers, I’d also like to congratulate Vicky Tiley and Rob Webber for being awarded Lord Mayor’s Medals for their work volunteering in Lockleaze and at Manor Farm Boy’s Club respectively. It’s great to see local volunteers recognised for their tireless dedication and energy – well done to Vicky and Rob. On a regional level, I have also responded to the industrial strategy consultation put out by

our regional level of government: the West of England Combined Authority. We have some of the most innovative businesses, a proud manufacturing heritage and some of the best universitybusiness collaborations in the country. As a member of the House of Commons Science & Technology Select Committee I’m always proud to champion our region, including in our current inquiry on the effectiveness of public spending into research and development. However, my major concern was the significant lack of attention – in the WECA industrial strategy – on the impact of automation on local jobs. Using the best available data and looking at the types of businesses we have in North and West Bristol I have estimated that up to 17,000 jobs in my constituency alone are at risk of being displaced due to automation. It’s vital that government puts in measures to help workers who lose their job or have to re-train to support their transition to the new economy. I’m yet to see any real commitment to that, but I’ll continue to push for it. This month, in less than two years as your MP, we reached over 11,000 case files in my constituency office. If you have contacted me about a personal matter or shared your view on local or national policy, your enquiry will be included in that number. It’s great to have such highly engaged and curious constituents so thank you for sharing your views with me and giving me the opportunity to help you when you need support. If you or someone you know who lives in Bristol North West needs help or has a question for me, you can always contact me on email, phone or in the post. Or you can come to a coffee morning, pub politics or surgery to have a chat face to face (all the details can be found at www. darren-jones.co.uk). You can also find me on Facebook (fb.com/darrenjonesmp) and Twitter (@darrenpjones) or you can join my weekly Facebook Live chat on Wednesdays at 7.30pm or sign up to my monthly newsletter (darren-jones.co.uk/sign-up).

Sports Centre hosts international academy football tournament LOCKLEAZE Sports Centre hosted the biggest international academy football tournament to be held in the region. The event, for players born in 2007, which was jointly coordinated by the Bristol Rovers Academy and ‘Live Adventure’, took place at Lockleaze Sport Centre across a Saturday. Inter Milan, Paris St Germain and Sporting Lisbon, three of Europe’s biggest clubs, were the headline acts and teams from Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic and Finland were also in attendance. The Premier League was also represented with Chelsea, Everton, West Ham, Southampton and Cardiff all taking part along with Bristol Rovers Academy side too of course. The tournament, which saw teams placed initially into four groups of five teams and then into new groups based on the results in the initial stages, was won by Sporting Lisbon, a club that has a world-renowned youth development programme and has produced some of the world’s most exciting players including Cristiano Ronaldo. Bristol Rovers Academy Manager Jonathan Henderson said it was great for the Academy to stage such a prestigious tournament. “We were delighted with the chance to host a tournament

of this nature. To have attracted teams from such a wide range of countries, as well as from the UK to take part is a huge achievement. A big thank you must go to Dawid Kowalski and Live Adventure without whom it would not have been possible to have secured the level of teams in attendance. “The talent on show was unbelievably high and it would not be an exaggeration to say that there may be players who were involved in this event who could go on to potentially playing in the Champions League or even at major international tournaments for their countries at some point in the future. For our young players to have had the experience to play against players of that calibre, as well as against a number of clubs from a range of countries is something that will be hugely beneficial for their development. “The highlight of the day will certainly be something our players will cherish as a memorable childhood experience for the rest of their lives. “We are incredibly proud to have been involved in putting this event together, and I’d like to thank not only all the teams who attended but also everyone from the Academy, Live Adventure and Lockleaze Sports Centre who worked tirelessly in making this event a huge success.”

Own up to tenancy fraud

Groundwork at Stoke Park coming along in leaps and bounds

Association – are also taking part. Their tenants can end their tenancy directly by contacting the relevant association or by contacting the council. Latest figures show that there are around 500 households living in temporary accommodation in Bristol. There are also 11,800 families who are seeking long-term accommodation on the housing register. If you want to end your tenancy, or if you think someone you know is committing tenancy fraud, email tenancy.fraud@bristol.gov.uk or ring 0117 922 2470. To find out more go to bristol. gov.uk/tenancyfraud.

LOTS of volunteers have been working at Stoke Park with Steve England, Groundwork UK and Bristol Parks, helping to restore historic woodland and grassland across the estate and restart maintenance at Purdown Percy. University of West of England (UWE) conservation volunteers and members of the public have been working hard to remove bramble and re-coppice hazel within the woodland. Particular highlights include reopening the historic saloon in Barn Wood and creation of a dead hedge, ideal for nesting birds – this was last cleared in 2011 with work from the Stoke Park Restoration Trust.

The tunnel by Hermitage Woods, built in 1749, is now visible again following work to open up the area. It’s great to see so many people enthused about Stoke Park, and the estate has benefitted significantly from all those willing to volunteer, whether that’s through the conservation projects or regular litter-picking days. If you are interesting in volunteering with some of the volunteering projects you can contact Steve England at Newlook388@ aol.com or Groundwork at amy. walsh@groundwork.co.uk. Grazing is being reintroduced at Stoke Park after more than

20 years absence to increase biodiversity and help restore this nationally important historic landscape. Grazing will help stop the spread of scrub and invasive, fast-growing species and encourage a wide range of grassland

plants. Grazing is a more sustainable way to manage the land instead of mechanical cutting of the grass. Earlier this year concerns were raised about the positioning of some of the stock-proof fencing and the location of gates.

Following feedback from local people, Bristol Parks has made some changes. The fencing in front of the Vench will be moved back to the hedge line to the east and west of the Vench and 18 additional gates than originally planned will now be installed.

This should ensure that people have good access to the whole estate. There were a few requests for further gates within the fencing surrounding Purdown Percy. The gates have been reviewed but the decision has been to not to include more gates here. When sheep and / or goats are grazing here it’s important that they have some quiet space. A plan can be found on the city council website at www. bristol.gov.uk/cattle-grazing. The plan is to install all the infrastructure required for the field immediately to the west of Duchess Pond by the end of April with the water supply connected. This will be the first field to be grazed. When the timescales are known for the introduction of grazing this will be posted on the Bristol City Council webpage www.bristol.gov.uk/cattlegrazing, via noticeboards and the Parks twitter account.

With PCSO Charlotte Thompson

Don’t let alarm alarm you GOOD news in Horfield recently where local residents stopped and detained a man during a burglary by local residents. He is currently under investigation. If you see a crime in progress our advice would be to retreat to a safe place and call 999, but I recognise that this doesn’t always go to plan. However it’s important that you put your safety first. Talking of burglary, as the days get longer and, dare I say it, the weather improves, please remember to make your house look as if it is occupied. Remember your mantra: WINDOWS / DOORS / LOCKS & KEYS! Are your windows locked?

Are all your doors locked? Are your keys out of the locks and are they nearby but out of sight? If you have a burglar alarm use it, don’t be scared of it. It takes three minutes to burgle a house, how long does it take to set an alarm? Get into a pattern and get used to setting your alarm and it will get easier, I promise! We have received a few complaints around van dwellers and vans parked on Kellaway Avenue. Bristol City Council is aware that there is an increase in numbers of people living in vehicles parked on the highways. People adopt this way of life for many different reasons and we each have a right to choose

YOUR LOCAL NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICING TEAM: Lockleaze: PC Rick Woodland, PCSO Charlotte Thompson & PC Sam Hewitt Horfield: PC Jo Archer, PC Dudley Rowe & PCSO Tristan Fussell Contact: www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/contact-us/ or call 101

how we live. The law is there to protect everyone and we will do our utmost to ensure that our community, however this is made up, is safe. We will deal with anything of a criminal nature. Anti-social behaviour (ASB) and criminal activity is not acceptable from any section of the community. The expectations and standards of behaviour are the same as is expected of all citizens. When it comes to ASB then we can look at ways of addressing these issues. Please report any concerns to us online via our website, or by calling 101. We will work closely with other agencies to reduce ASB in any area. Bristol City Council has legislation around van dwellers and we would encourage you to report directly to them any concerns you have. Vans parked safely and legally on a highway are not breaking the law. Neither are caravans which are

parked on a highway, as long as they are not causing an obstruction or a danger. It is very hard to explain the law around vehicles parked on the highway. For many offences, an officer would have to see the vehicle moving before enforcement can happen. If it is just parked, the easiest way to get a vehicle removed is to look at the tax and anyone can do this online. Just go to DVLA’s website and input the car registration together with the make – if it is untaxed it will tell you. For any other complaint, and I love a challenge around vehicles, please let us know and we will look into it. Finally, I still have a few key safes left. If you would like one, just let me know. If there is anything that you would like me to cover please get in contact. Until next month, PCSO Charlotte

n THE MAYOR writes for the Voice Marvin Rees LITTER and graffiti are issues that people care deeply about in their local area, and are part of the way we feel about our own communities and homes. Making Bristol’s streets measurably cleaner is a priority for many people in the city, and one shared by me and my administration. That is why at our most recent cabinet meeting, we approved the allocation of an additional £1m for our Clean Streets action plan. As part of the investment the city centre areas and parks, which see high levels of use, will get new high tech bins that can compact litter and hold up to six times more than a standard bin. The bins will also email Bristol Waste Company automatically when they need emptying. We are also purchasing a cherry picker to help our graffiti removal crews access graffiti in hard to reach places. The fantastic volunteer-

ing groups who help to try and improve Bristol’s streets will also benefit from the investment. One hundred litter picking kits will be made available for schools, and new equipment, including graffiti removal kits, are set to be purchased for community clean ups. But we know in many cases this is dealing with the actions of a minority of people who continue to think it is acceptable to treat the city as their personal bin. I am determined to challenge the behaviour of these people, through enforcement. This means fixed penalty notices to those caught littering and prosecuting those fly tipping in our city. My May cabinet meeting will consider proposals to increase the fixed penalty charges for certain environmental offences such as littering, fly-posting and graffiti.

ACCESSIBLE Transport 4 U COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY Providing financially and physically accessible transport for vulnerable and disabled people from Bristol to anywhere at times and days to suit members needs

I am grateful to the hardworking staff at Bristol Waste Company, and the many volunteers across the city, who are already working hard to make

the streets cleaner and more welcoming. We want to support them all in their work to make Bristol’s streets something we can all be proud of.

Team gold medals for synchronised swimmers FAIRFIELD High School (FHS) is delighted and very proud to share the news that two of its students – Rhiannon Hobbs in Y10 and Nia Rushton in Y9 – have been awarded the Swim England Synchronised Swimming National Age Group Championships free team gold medal. It comes as no surprise that the girls, together with the rest of their team, have worked tirelessly to train for this accolade which they narrowly missed out on two years ago. The competition took part at Manchester Aquatics Centre with the nine girls taking the 13-15 year group category by storm. Please, if you are having a picnic or visiting the Common then dispose of your litter properly or take it home with you. In council business I have put in two bids for local funding, supported by my Councillor colleague Olly Mead: we are asking for £30,000 for Horfield

Common to protect the perimeter from unwanted vehicle access, and £5,000 for St Teresa’s School pavement bollards to protect children on their way to school. The funding pot for the ward committee that includes Horfield is the smallest in the city so it’s fingers crossed the bids will be accepted. I am continuing to challenge the Mayor and his cabinet on their continued investment in Bristol Energy – £37.5million of council reserves has been put in, with no expectation of seeing any profit

Their routine was magical to watch and this medal is richly deserved.”

Nia’s mum Sarah added: “I am so proud of our national champions and their wonderful achievement. The girls train so hard with their team and earned a well deserved gold medal in Manchester! “Their future is certainly bright and we look forward to sharing future achievements.”

n HEALTH ADVICE with the team at Monks Park Surgery

Hay fever remedies not to be sneezed at

‘We help people live their lives at home’

Hay fever is a common allergic condition that affects up to one in five people at some point in their life. It is an inflammation in the nose which happens when our immune system overreacts to allergens in the air such as pollen. Pollen is a fine powder-like substance released by certain types of trees, grasses and weeds as part of their reproductive cycle and which is spread by insects and the wind. Pollen contains proteins that can cause the nose, eyes, throat and sinuses (small air-filled cavities behind your cheekbones and forehead) to become swollen, irritated and inflamed. If your symptoms are due to an allergy to pollen you will typically develop hay fever symptoms at specific times of the year. You can have an allergy to: n tree pollen, released during spring n grass pollen, released during the end of spring and beginning of summer

n weed pollen, released late autumn Symptoms of hay fever: n sneezing n a runny or stuffy nose n red, itchy and watery eyes n swelling around the eyes The fluid from the nose is usually clear and onset of symptoms is normally within minutes of exposure. The symptoms can make you feel pretty miserable and have a negative impact on quality of life. It can affect sleep, the ability to work or concentrate at school.

The symptoms of hay fever are similar to those of the common cold but they often last for more than two weeks and despite the name, do not include a fever! Asthma and hay fever are closely linked and your GP or asthma nurse may add hay fever treatment to your asthma plan. The best way to control hay fever is to avoid exposure to pollen although understandably this is extremely difficult in the warm weather when windows are open and you want to spend more time outside. Self help tips for hay fever It’s sometimes possible to prevent the symptoms of hay fever by taking some basic precautions, such as: n wearing wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting in your eyes when you’re outdoors n taking a shower and changing your clothes after being outdoors to remove the pollen on your body

n the Met Office provides a pollen forecast and if the pollen count is high, you can take preventative measures, such as taking antihistamines before leaving the house. n applying a small amount of Vaseline (petroleum gel) to the nasal openings to trap pollen grains. Hay fever can often be controlled using over-the-counter medication from your pharmacist who will advise on which ones are best for you. You can buy antihistamine drops, tablets or nasal sprays which can help with itchy and watery eyes and sneezing and a blocked nose. However, if your symptoms are getting worse and don’t respond to the medication from the pharmacist, speak to your GP, as you may require prescription medication. If you’re a sufferer, hay fever is nothing to sneeze at so make sure you’re hay fever ready!
