Hope magazine has been extremely well received over the last few months, so it was a given to do a newsletter to tide us over until the next issue. We put our heads together to come up with some useful articles: First feature is binge watching, which is one of the more dominant changes to come out of Covid times.

Second, who’s been feeling a bit sluggish recently and desperate get out and about? Everyone is saying the same, read on for some top tips to feeling confident, less anxious or just a bit more energised for those future social engagements.

WHAT’S YOUR BINGE WATCH? Lockdown has brought a new way to watch the telly box. It used to be regular Corrie watching on a Monday and Wednesday, Eastenders on a Thursday and Hollyoaks weeknights - we were hooked! I used to like nothing better than having a productive day at work, home, getting fed and watered, kids sorted by 7pm and settling down to an hour or 2 of soaps and dramas.

I can’t remember the last time I watched any of the soaps or live TV (well apart from Line of Duty and if you haven’t heard of it, then where have you been?!) It’s all Netflix and chilling, Amazon Prime and shopping (I guess) or You tube and tik toking. I love nothing better than binge watching a gripping drama one after the other, so you don’t have to wait a week on a cliff-hanger for answers, you get that immediate gratification. We all felt the pain of waiting a whole week for the LOD finale and finally finding out who H was. 2020 single-handedly changed the way everyone is watching their choice of entertainment, whether that is golden oldies searched up on You tube, Instagram showreels, your choice of app, Disney+ anyone?

So now we are getting out and about again will we still carry-on binging?

You Tube has been around for ages and has been a vital avenue for bands, entertainers and the like for showcasing their talents. I have found some golden nuggets in old films on You Tube (not going to show my age here but believe me, they’re so old you can’t get them anywhere else) so high fives to You Tube for my viewing pleasure, they got it so right from the early social media days.

LEAVING LOCKDOWN LETHARGY Are you nervous about what the ‘new normal’ will bring as you leave your lockdown life behind you? It’s okay to feel anxious about the unknown. Read on for some helpful tips on how to leave lockdown lethargy in a positive way.

Life can sometimes seem overbearing with the busyness that comes from leaving our homes after a long time indoors. Even the thought of being around large groups of people again can leave some of us feeling anxious.

Be aware that leaving lockdown doesn’t necessarily mean to return to old normal life but it might mean having a new normal life; • • •

Set realistic goals which aren’t overbearing Decide upon and set clear boundaries which will shield you from over-exerting yourself Think beforehand about how you can readjust to being around a lot of people again

Look after your body and listen to it; • •

Exercising for 30 minutes a day releases chemicals in the brain called endorphins which will significantly improve your mood Rest well and a good amount to regain strength and energy for the day If your body is sore and tired then listen to it. Maybe you need to adjust your schedule and create time for rest.

Eat foods which are going to benefit you.

Foods which have been processed or have a high sugar content can drain your energy.

The secret to successful change?

Reflect on the day, this will help you process your thoughts more clearly Be mindful of your emotions so that you don’t find yourself getting overwhelmed by an overload of information Focus on the positives and things that you’re grateful for in your life Listen to your inner voice. Think about whether you’re talking negatively towards yourself and think about how you do want to speak to yourself.

Make small and gradual changes to your lifestyle, week by week. Do not be too hard on yourself if you find that you are feeling stressed and not doing everything you planned to do during the week. Try sharing your thoughts and emotions with trusted family or friends, they might have valuable advice and support for you.

Edinburghs main central shopping thoroughfare of Princes Street ​has a long history of consumer choice. With traditional department stores like Jenners and Frasers, which are sadly no more, and the smaller elite designer stores, it is a day out in itself and a lunch thrown in for good measure. I remember as a child, the slow walk along Princes street immersed in crowds meandering along enjoying the gorgeous window displays, it was always so busy.

Talking of window displays, take a quick detour up Hanover street and you’ll find Bibis bakery, that window is something else. Mouth watering bakes and colourful cupcakes invite you in!
