A word from our publisher: “Easter is a great time to reflect on how to improve our relationships. On the first Easter God Almighty took extraordinary steps to give us a platform for relating to him as members of His family. We can reflect on the power of forgiveness, being sacrificial for those we care about, caring when they make us mad and more. We hope this community magazine encourages and even inspires you.”

SCOTS
Wha’s like us? Just a few and they’re A’ deid! Well, the inventors that I will talk about in this article a bit further on are, but first I talk about the very much “alive and kicking” Scots of the moment: We have a few celebratory Scots that are making waves, I suppose I cannot write about our celebs and not mention Martin Compston, who has graced our screens in Our House (ITV), Line of Duty (BBC), Traces (Alibi). He’s pretty good at this acting malarky, sealing his status with award winning performances, especially in Line of Duty so I have given him a place and mentioned him first.
I also have to mention Paulo Nutini, the gravelly but heavenly voice that hails from Paisley is back, we’ve not seen much of him recently. He is playing TRSMT Festival in Glasgow this year, 8th-10th July at Glasgow Green. Also playing is fellow Scot Lewis Capaldi who is hugely popular, there are tickets left I believe so hurry and check it out online if you want to go see them.
From Musical Scots to sporting ones I have some mentions. We have Andy Murray, our Wimbledon winning hero, and the knighted ones Sir Chris Hoy and Sir Alex Ferguson - we ALL know them! I have to mention our curling ladies led by Rhona Martin who came back from the Winter Olympics with a gold medal.
4
I could go on and mention so many more celebrities but I really wanted to write about the inventors and discoverers that helped to shape the modern world that we live in. They all 100% gave Scotland a very special place on the World map. We are a beloved nation who have lead the way with originality and innovation, with Alexander Graham Bell who invented the telephone, yes the Apple 13 or Samsung you hold in your hand was the conception of a Scot and have evolved into your current multi-tasking phone. Alexander Fleming, well we thank God for him and his penicillin, can you imagine where we would be without it. Then you have Logie Baird and the TV invention, James Watt who invented the Steam Engine and the fridge your raid for treats - yes, a Scot invented it, William Cullen. Feeling proud? You should be. One of the things I learned recently was all about the Scottish Covenant 1638 where the people, leaders of Scotland and the monarch put God first above all. On the 28th February 1638 in Greyfriars in Edinburgh, Scotland’s National Covenant was signed and around 60,000 people had gathered in the city for the event. It was then that Scotland was truly blessed, reaching out to the world through missionaries and inventions, we prospered and blossomed under the covenant with God, and when you look around our beautiful landscapes, lochs and mountains now, we know we are.

Unforgiveness is like drinking a cup of poison and waiting for the other person to die Our minds tell us not to forgive because we’re angry with the person who has hurt us. That keeps us tied to them as their victim. It also means we re-live the hurt over and over again. Unforgiveness degrades our mental health and well being, lowers our immune system and keeping us locked into being a victim of someone we don’t like. Unforgiveness negatively affects our existing relationships because we are angry and/or lacking trust and/or super wary of others. Forgiveness sets us free!
Forgiveness is not a feeling, it is an act of the will Forgiveness doesn’t begin when we feel like forgiving, that may never happen. Forgiveness begins with a decision to forgive, a cold, determined decision. Our emotions won’t help so we have to take charge of our emotions and make clear decisions every day until we are free of the hurts and wounds of other(s). Unforgiveness is an easy trap for self destruction. Forgiveness gives us our life back from those who have hurt us. Why don’t you spend a moment right now forgiving the person or persons who come
6
to your mind. You might find it helps to talk out loud and declare what you are forgiving. You might find it helpful to do it in prayer. Cleanse your soul! Forgive even the worst and most deliberate of wounds.
i4give is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, which have worked well for over 2,000 years.
Why don’t you start your own campaign, i4give, and improve personal well being and relationships.
THE POWER OF FORGIVENESS
Margaret Thatcher
continues to make us a victim of the person who hurt us.
Some years ago a man explained to me that he had surrendered his businesses and his life to be homeless on the streets of Edinburgh in protest against Margaret Thatcher.
Forgiveness doesn’t stop the hurt, but it allows us to move on.
My question was “do you think she has noticed?”
Trust is separate from forgiveness
What effect does unforgiveness have on the people who hurt us? Often no effect. Unforgiveness is harmful to us if we hold onto it, but doesn’t usually affect those who have hurt us. Unforgiveness seems appealing, but it
Isolation is awful, but family can be a key antidote.
We trust those who are worthy of trust, “trustworthy”. If someone has broken our trust and hurt us then we may not be able to trust them quickly. We can forgive someone but it could be wise to put up appropriate boundaries to protect ourselves. Forgiveness is a central message of Easter. As we approach Easter it might be good for our soul to forgive those we are bitter towards. Bitterness won’t hurt the person who hurt us, but it is toxic to our soul. We often hold onto unforgiveness because we believe justice needs to be served on those who have hurt us. Those who hurt us often suffer few if any consequences, so justice is a pointless excuse for holding on to unforgiveness. We don’t know what you believe about God, but He is just. Forgiveness moves the responsibility from our shoulders to His, and He will act. Unforgiveness cuts God out of the scenario. Why don’t you try i4give as a concept for personal health and better relationships? Glenn & Terri-Ann Rogers

The Musselburgh Business Partnership was formed to give a collective voice for businesses within the town. When covid hit they took it as an opportunity and set up the successful “Love Musselburgh” Campaign. Melanie Roccio was already working on Love Musselburgh Community projects so Musselburgh Business Partnership joined forces with them to help promote the local businesses during the height of Covid. I am sure you will have seen the Love Musselburgh Banners around the town. This spring they are launching a ‘Shop Local’ campaign which gives people a free £5 voucher when they spent £20 in participating shops. A perfect thank you for supporting local businesses. They welcome all local businesses within Musselburgh - even the ones running a business from their spare room. The more members they can get on board, the louder a voice they will have for things that go on within the town. Membership is only £25 per year and included in this is a listing on our Love Musselburgh website. If you’d like to join, drop an email to them at info@musselburghbp.co.uk

LOVE FOOTBALL? Love Musselburgh Athletic Our Pastor Glenn Rogers is the Chaplain of their football team and we have garnered a rather keen interest in football since. Olivebank Stadium is the home of Musselburgh Athletic, The Belmont Group are their main sponsor and they are members of the East of Scotland Football league.
As you can see there are regular visitors at the stadium to enjoy the games, they are very welcoming, so go down and check them out. There is no better day out for the individual or family and we have a tuck shop, merchandising with a small bar for hospitality guests.
You can find out more information on fixtures and the club in general here: https://www.musselburghathletic.co.uk/ 9
PLACES TO VISIT THIS SPRING East Lothian is a treasure trove of beauty and there is plenty to do in the Spring and Summer:
Gullane Beach is beautiful in the Spring and Summer, its clean, sandy and a popular haunt for family days out with plenty parking and Gullane (famous for the golf course) is a lovely town to mosey about in.
North Berwick Harbour and the Seabird Centre is a winner too, you can explore the wildlife and the discovery centre within the Seabird Centre, have an ice cream on the beach - Alandas Gelato do some very mouth-watering flavours. Another few local shops to discover and Lodge Park is a great park for the kids to let off some steam. don’t forget the landmark that is North Berwick Law. Give Dunbar a visit, there is a castle! Its a great town to spend time in, some interesting local shops and cafes and the train station has its very own micro pub, we went there for a weekend with the family and stayed in an Air BnB, the harbour in the evening is beautiful and picturesque, the swimming pool is worth it too. On your way to Dunbar stop off for a few hours at the East Links Family Park there is a train safari and friendly animals, crazy golf and go karting plus lots more to enjoy.
The National Museum of flight is an amazing experience where you can discover exciting! Exhibitions outdoors and indoors, you can even board concorde, that’s what I would call exciting!

HEALTHY EATING RECIPE When you think of a kebab, you think 1am and the local takeaway, lashings of chilli sauce burning the tongue, munching the lamb meat heartily as you walk on your way home from a night out, well it springs to mind if you have ever been on a night out in Edinburgh. I was never a fan but boy do I know some, and have witnessed the hearty munch. I recently discovered Middle Eastern Chicken Shwarma wrap (which by definition is a kebab) but this is a totally different experience. I have lean lovely chicken, salad, tomato, cous cous or humous, sliced baby potatoes or even rice the choice is yours. The main ingredient to finish is off is the lovely Toum Sauce, which is STRONG garlic mayo, sprinkle with some pomegranate and you’re in food heaven.
The chicken: Whisk together the oil, cumin, paprika, turmeric, allspice, chili powder, cinnamon, garlic, lemon zest and juice and 2 teaspoons salt in a container until combined. Add the chicken, cover and marinate, refrigerated, for 12 to 14 hours. When ready to eat fry until ready and cooked thoroughly. Salad and accompaniments : Cucumber sliced, sliced tomato and lettuce, or (optional) you can add in fries or sliced potatoes into the wrap to compliment the chicken. Rice, cous cous or Humous goes well on the side. Sauce: Toum Sauce (garlic Mayo - very strong) Garnish: Sprinkle pomegranate over to add lovely sweetness Flat bread or tortilla to wrap it how you feel and enjoy.
