WELCOME. The Covid19 national lockdown has birthed a lot of creativity. With more time on their hands, and less money, people are setting up great small businesses, some are featured in this magazine. Lockdown wasn’t the inspiration for this magazine, but it did provide the opportunity. For a long time, I have thought about producing a community magazine that’s informative, motivational, helpful, and most importantly, spreads Hope! You’re in for a good read. – Heather Greig, Founder & Commercial Lead
This pandemic has shaken everything in our world. Now, we’re being told the socioeconomic consequences will be truly AWFUL. Where can we find hope in times like these? These published statistics from lockdown show: • • •
Nearly half of adults in the UK (44%) say they pray A quarter (24%) of UK adults say they have watched or listened to a religious service since lockdown Over half of those who pray (56%) agree that prayer changes the world
We’ve called our church “Hope”, because everybody needs it. That’s why we’re sponsoring this community magazine - to showcase local businesses run by our members, neighbours, and the communities we live in, we want to grow together and support each other.

I love to try to “capture the moment” in a photograph… A great photograph should tell a story something about that person or thing or place. I like to photograph in a candid, reportage style. Which allows the person being photographed to just relax and be themselves. I love to photograph people outside in a place they feel relaxed with as much natural light as possible. If you are looking for some photographs of yourselves or your family, a special occasion or a wedding, please get in touch with me to discuss what you would like. I specialise in portraiture and property photography. I’m happy to photograph anything! AUSSIE BUSH GIRL A Different Kind of Life... Hope Church’s Rev Terri-Ann Rogers I lived out in the Australian bush, I mean really out in the bush; the nearest supermarket was 400 miles away and we had to travel 120 miles to collect our mail, our next-door neighbour was 60 miles away so life was very different from here in Scotland. The outback is my birthplace and I grew up on a “small” property that was larger than East Lothian and Midlothian put together, Australia’s largest property is about the same size as Wales. I grew up with only my two brothers and my parents for company, isolation and loneliness were a normal part of everyday life. Loneliness is a major issue and I learnt several things I may not have learnt in “normal” society. I sought to maximise my relationships with generous care and loyalty, and also, I spent a lot of time down the creek talking to God. I developed a relationship with God that has been precious to me and it had a major effect on what I rely on in adult life. Our life was working from dawn to dusk, and from dusk onward, we only had the generator on for a few hours after our evening meal for lighting, we ate our meals in minutes, so we could get back to work. My schooling was by “School of the Air”, which is school by radio. I did school in the living room, and although I was over 500 miles from the ocean, one of my classmates lived on a lighthouse, I have never met most of my “classmates”. Life in the outback was very male oriented and I often felt unseen and unheard. The good thing is that I became a good cook and
8
ended up being a chef in a restaurant as a young woman. There’s a silver lining in every cloud! When I was 16 I was in a car accident caused by someone else. My younger brother died and my mother would spend months in hospital. It made me question whether I was ready to die too, this made me more determined to follow Jesus. My mother was in hospital in a remote mining town and I started going to a local church youth group. One night my eyes locked with a tall young man who began to pursue me. My father was horrified as he was an atheist and not a follower of Jesus. When the two of them first met it was a competition in hand squeezing in place of a hand shake. We are now ordained ministers leading Hope Church, but there’s quite a story still to be told before we got to where we are now.
A HOSTILE ATHEIST Any Change Is Possible
humiliation and more was part of each day. Life was no fun there. I began to drink alcohol heavily, trying to recapture joy and peace, I’d forgotten what they felt like after I started boarding school. I soon found that I was even drinking on a Wednesday because I just couldn’t make it to the weekend. So, I found myself an angry atheist on the verge of alcoholism, I blamed God for stuff He had nothing to do with. I was asking lots of questions - why am I here? Is this all there is? Why do I fear death? I had no answers then.
Hope Church’s Rev Glenn Rogers My friends used to hold me back whenever we came upon Christian’s trying to tell people about Jesus. I wanted to batter them (a very Scottish phrase) and I was very violent with it. There was nothing in me that liked Christianity, or “religion” as I called it. I didn’t understand back then that Christianity is about Relationship with God, it’s not actually a Religion. I was born and bred in a mining town in the West Australian outback where hunting and camping were our family hobbies, at age 11 I was sent to a boarding school 400 miles from home. One moment I was in the safety of my family, the next I was alone in hell. My mother had not even driven off the school grounds before I was battered to the ground. Bullying, violence,
My brother decided to follow Jesus, which only confirmed to me that he was weak. My lifestyle caught up and I was taken to hospital in a coma, then to my family home 400 miles away to recover. Climbing the walls with boredom I finally accepted my brother’s offer to attend his church youth group. Feeling very awkward, I walked into the hall and saw the youth praying in a circle, there was a pretty blond in the group and my heart leapt, then a voice behind me said “that’s your wife”. I spun around and my nose was against the back wall, feeling foolish I spun back then exited the building. Outside I lit up a cigarette to settle my nerves, because when you’re an atheist and God speaks to you audibly it really messes with your mind. That pretty blond has been married to me over 30 years and it just keeps getting better. Although I fought with the God idea it began to make more sense as well as the impression God had left on my heart. The major impact at the start and even today, is that of hope. We all need hope.

A NEW BUZZ! Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air. I know I can count on you. Sometimes I feel like saying “Lord, I just don’t care”. But you’ve got the love I need to see me through. Sometimes it seems the going is just too rough. And things go wrong no matter what I do. Now and then I feel like life is just too much. But you’ve got the love I need to see me through. - The Source Featuring Candi Staton ‘You Got the Love’ was the ultimate song when it came to the clubbing scene in 1990-91. When you heard the first few bars of music coming on, the euphoria that rushed through your body was immense, that spine-tingling excitement ou could only feel when you hear it. So you race to the dance floor and into your best dance moves ever. Mind you, being high on the best “white dove” ecstasy tablet helped, too. Nowadays, when I hear this tune it reminds me of many happy times, and I feel that happiness all over again. I sooo love it! Now though, this tune means something so very different to me. Candi Staton is a committed Christian. She first sang this song for a documentary about a man struggling to lose weight and overcome his addiction to food. It was to help him through his hard time and encourage him to turn to God. I also read it as a love letter to Jesus; you can’t deny the lyrics. This tune was played every single weekend to thousands upon thousands of people in nightclubs, throughout the world. We listened, not knowing the backstory and meaning. You throw your hands up in the air, because you were so high and feeling so good, you just didn’t care about anything else, apart from that moment.

This song has seen me through carefree times, clubbing or raving with so many new “friends”, all experiencing this new subculture. Every weekend we would fall out to the clubs, buzzing. And every weekend it was the same - “that was THE best night ever”. We were all sweaty, flushed, excited, and high on this new drug ecstasy. It just made you connect and understand everyone under the roof, dancing together, smiling that knowing smile to strangers, hugging so tightly, the rush of adrenalin through your body was electric and it felt so good. But euphoria was not to last! After about a year of raving on this ecstatic scene, I was hardly eating and increasingly taking more drugs. Although I still managed to hold down my job, paranoia started to set in. Friendships waned, and fallings out happened. Distances opened up between these people who used to be so on the same wavelength. Darkness and depression starting to cloud over. I wasn’t healthy, I was weak. I was uncomfortable with these people now, and I think we were all feeling the same, nothing like this lasts forever. We were burnt out. I still have my best and close girl friends who were there with me, but we all started to think we had to get a grip, get studying, look to the future and cut this out. It wasn’t easy.
One weekend while at my mum’s house, I had a panic attack. Fear swept over me like a dirty old infested duvet, polluting, suffocating and sickening me. I didn’t want to go back to my dark and cold flat. I didn’t want to be alone, and I couldn’t cope with putting a face on at work on the Monday morning. My mum didn’t know what to do with me, I was hysterical. Eventually she phoned her Pastor, Paul, who came and sat with me, calmed me, and prayed with me for four hours, until the best moment of my life happened. He spoke all about Jesus, and what he did for us on the cross to reconcile us to God, our Father; how He would give me peace and transform me, and rescue me from this dark hole I felt I was spiralling down. I was genuinely searching and had always believed, but now it was becoming real.
I felt Him. I felt the peace and calm, and knew I wanted to turn my life around. So, I prayed, with Pastor Paul encouraging and leading me. The contentment and happiness I felt when I stood up was amazing – better than ecstasy ever was. I couldn’t stop smiling and I felt so thankful, Pastor Paul said there will be Angels in Heaven having a party now, I was hysterical with laughter and happiness, Best. Decision. Ever. What a difference four hours can make to your life; it’s not always easy, I’ve had a lot of ups and downs, nobody is perfect and God knows that, but he does have the Love, a buzz that never goes away!
NEW LIFE Five years ago, I was dealing with unemployment, depression and anxiety. I was in desperation and shame. I cried out to God one night in prayer and almost immediately my life began to change. I felt God’s presence, and no longer needed my anti-depressants, which was a miracle.
which has completely changed my whole perspective on life.
After a couple of weeks, I felt like I needed to go to church. That’s when I started attending Hope Church. When I came to church, I felt like I was coming home. I just felt like I belonged here. I was encouraged and loved, and that was something I hadn’t had for years.
I started volunteering in Bethany House, which is part of Bethany Christian Trust. I just know 100% that God called me there. So many signs confirm this, and God’s leading has just been perfect. I now have a job in Bethany. It’s an amazing place and I just love it.
Through Hope Church I have met the most amazing people. I have also been able to get involved and serve there, which I have just loved. I started to read the Bible,
Life is now peaceful, full of joy, and I know I am blessed by God. I wake up every day with a purpose and a hope for the future no matter what happens.

On the one hand we love Christmas and on the other want to align ourselves with government guidance to save lives. Many of the more commercial frills which we love, like the German Markets, Panto’s and parties won’t be available, but that doesn’t mean we should have a miserable Christmas, just a more inventive 2020 one. Why don’t you try new Christmas traditions for your family, here’s some ideas to get you started: •

Di Rollo of Musselburgh was established in 1899 by Domenico Di Rollo who came to Scotland from Roccasecca, a small Italian village near Cassino, in Italy. He started his ice cream and confectionery business in the east coast fishing town of Musselburgh and within a few years he had opened a second shop - business was thriving. In the early 1950s his son, also named Domenico, established the manufacturing and wholesale side of the business which expanded steadily.
In 1986, their sister Elaine took over the running of the family shop in Bridge Street selling 20 flavours of ice cream which was something new for the town of Musselburgh. Today, the range of flavours on offer has grown and is complemented by a wide selection of handmade Belgian chocolates, you can even stop in for a coffee and enjoy your ice cream within the shop.
A third generation of the Di Rollo family are now running the firm, young Domenico’s sons, Reno and Kevin. They have continued the family business bringing new and innovative flavours of ice cream and sorbets to the people of Musselburgh, East Lothian and beyond.
Business continued to expand and by 1992 another new factory was required to meet demand; the current facility was completed and in production by April 1994. It complies with all the latest EU directives for food premises and can produce over 600 litres of ice cream an hour. Reno’s favourite is the staple vanilla and chocolate flavours, but it may be a surprise to know that the customers love mint choc chip the most!
I wouldn’t pass by that shop without popping in for a cone, you can find the Di Rollo brothers at 8-14 South Street, Musselburgh and the shop at 34 Bridge Street in Musselburgh. Tel 0131 665 3002.
