ON THE COVER: Reel Time Fishing Charters skipper Alexs Matic and two of his mates drove the company’s Clayton Gallant charter boat named Barrel Buster from Mt Martha to Portland for the bluefin season. The morning after arriving they headed out and boated a 95kg fish at 9:30am and followed it up with two more fish of the same size between 4pm and 5pm.

Don’t be soft, it’s just winter.

As winter settles in, the temptation to pack away your fishing gear and wait for warmer days can be strong. Yet, you should reconsider. Winter fishing offers a unique and rewarding experience that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Firstly, let’s address the misconception that fish aren’t biting during the winter. While it’s true that some fish activity may slow down in colder temperatures, many species remain active year-round. In fact, winter is prime time to catch many of the fish featured in this issue, such as bluefin tuna, mulloway, gummy sharks and Murray cod. It’s also prime time for trout, king George whiting, and snapper in NSW and Queensland.

Winter fishing presents a peaceful and serene atmosphere on the water. The tranquility of a lake or a rain-soaked riverbank offers a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of warmer seasons. It’s a chance to escape the crowds and reconnect with nature in its purest form.

Additionally, winter is great for experimentation. With fewer anglers around, you can hone your techniques and experiment with different bait and tackle setups. The challenge of outsmarting elusive fish in cold, clear waters can be incredibly rewarding for those willing to embrace it.

While the idea of fishing in winter may seem daunting at first, it’s a pursuit that offers numerous benefits for those willing to brave the cold. Whether you’re seeking solitude, honing your skills, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature in its winter cloak, there’s something truly special about casting a line on a crisp winter day.

Be sure to invest some money in quality winter attire. We now have access to excellent winter fishing gear here in Australia that we didn’t 5 years ago. Brands like Huk, Simms, Gill, Daiwa and more offer excellent gear to keep you warm and dry, don’t try and tackle winter in your work clothes!

So, don’t let the cold weather deter you. Embrace the challenge, bundle up, and head out for a winter fishing adventure you won’t soon forget.

DAIWA J-BRAID EXPEDITION

Daiwa’s new J-Braid Expedition features the same IZANAS fibre construction of other J-Braid lines, J-Braid Expedition features Daiwa’s Silicon “Coating PE” technology to create a slicker, smoother braid with hydrophobic properties that increases durability and enhances feel. J-Braid Expedition’s silicon coating means the braid does not absorb any water, importantly this means the braid also does not absorb the silt and sediment present in that water which is the number one cause of braided line wear over time. By shedding the water thanks to its hydrophobic properties, J-Braid Expedition will last longer than traditional braided lines, providing more value and greater performance.

SEPHIA CLINCH LONG APPEAL

Conventional shallow-type jigs have grappled with limited cast distances and rapid sinking rates, but Shimano’s Sephia Clinch Long Appeal breaks these barriers through its jet boost mechanism and center of gravity movement system. This ingenious design empowers anglers to achieve an impressive average flight distance of 52 meters, exceeding all expectations. A standout feature of the Sephia Clinch Long Appeal is its remarkable slow fall capability, with a sinking speed of approximately 7.4 seconds/m, making it ideal for targeting cautious spring squid with a tantalizingly gradual descent. This slow fall also facilitates exploration of shallow weed beds from the shore. Moreover, the Sephia Clinch Long Appeal exhibits exceptional action response, maintaining the high performance of the Clinch series. It enables precise rod actions, including continuous wind with wiggles and sharp vertical jerks for high jumps, striking an ideal balance between fall rate and action response.

POINTER 65XD IS BACK

The Pointer 65XD is a 65mm suspending jerkbait that weighs 5.6g and crash dives to 8ft. RAID MASTERBLASTER

Masterblaster is the ultimate buzzbait with a simple body that encompasses the three essential charcteristics of a great buzz bait- sound, water push, and toughness. Sound Equipped with an original sound generation mechanism that emits a “fishing sound” from the moment you take it out of the package, without the need for “breaking in” until it produces a good sound. The contact between the aluminium pipe placed on the arm and the propeller produces a soft, swishing sound. Buzzbaits tend to be featured only in their sound, but at Raid Japan, they are also pursuing the push of water as an important element for catching fish. The high frictional resistance of the aluminium pipe and aluminium propeller generates torque when the propeller rotates. You should be able to feel the winding sensation of the propeller firmly grasping the water and stirring the water surface. It is a buzzbait that appeals to fish not only with its sound but also with water pressure. Buzzbait is a rhythm fishing lure. We have designed it to be as simple and strong as possible in order to eliminate troubles that would disrupt the rhythm of fishing. If the arm is bent every time you catch or stack a fish, you may lose your rhythm. The arm uses extra thick wire of 1.4mm to make it difficult to bend. If you’re chasing bass, yellas, perch, jacks or cod this summer, you want the Matserblaster by your side. Head weight is 12g. Available in 10 colours.

BARREL FEVER

Catching a 100kg-plus southern bluefin tuna is an unforgettable experience now possible year-round in southern Australian waters.

Words & Images: Jonah Yick

WWW.HOOKEDUP.COM.AU 18 MAY 2024 | ISSUE 144
The south now has a world class fishery in its backyard and it’s the envy of the rest of the fishing world.

It’s barrel season in the south and although southern bluefin tuna have now become quite prolific in southern Australian waters, this was not always the case. Going back to the early to mid-2000s, catching a single bluefin tuna of any size in a season used to be a notable capture. However, in the past 10 to 15 years, the stocks have recovered strongly, and bluefin tuna are now caught in numbers and in locations where they were previously not seen. Much to the delight of game fishers around southern Australia, the presence of trophy ‘barrel’ tuna has continued to increase, to the point where they can now be caught at almost any time of the year. Before we get into the techniques and strategies to target these jumbo-sized fish, we probably need to define what a ‘barrel’ tuna actually is. Although debatable, the nickname is a colloquial term for a tuna around the 100kg mark or more.

Where And When

Historically, the barrel southern bluefin tuna season in Tasmania and Victoria ranged from April to July, give or take a month or so on either end. However, over the past few years, they have begun to be caught regularly at times of the year, which could be considered out of season. Although some of these captures have been one-off events, many others have resulted in consistent runs of big fish, some of which are as reliable as the traditional tuna season. I have caught bluefin in every month of the year, predominantly fishing out of the south-east coast of Tasmania at Eaglehawk Neck, as well as the remote south coast. As far as barrel bluefin tuna, the only months when I haven’t caught one are September and January. However, given there have been captures of these big fish in these months, we can legitimately say they are a year-round option.

The most reliable barrel bluefin run generally coincides with slightly cooler temperatures – anywhere from 12 to 17 degrees – as well as aggregations of their favourite bait species: red bait, blue mackerel, jack mackerel and arrow squid. You will find these bait species prefer to congregate over reef structure, therefore any oceanic location with substantial reef can be worth a try. Depending on the location, some reefs can hold the baitfish and tuna for months at a time. In other locations, however, the bait fish may move daily, so the tuna may move kilometres from where they were hooked and seen the previous day. In these situations it helps to have a good network of anglers to get up-todate intel, or watch social media to keep an eye on the general area of where the fish are getting caught.

Rigging Up

Trolling lures is by far the most common and effective method of chasing big bluefin tuna. Skirted lures ranging in size from six to 15 inches are ideal and will generally imitate the average size of their prey encountered in offshore waters.

Lures should be rigged on 24/37kg overhead gear, as the heavier tackle gives you much more control over the fish, as well as a bigger margin for error if it is behaving erratically around the boat in the final stages of the fight. This heavier class of gear is also preferable if you are aiming to release the fish, given it reduces the chance of a long fight where the fish may be exhausted beyond recovery. Ideally set up the reels with braid backing – approximately 600m of 37kg braid with a 200 or 300m monofilament top shot in the 37kg or 60kg class, joined with a PR knot. This means that not only will you have more than sufficient line capacity, but you will also have the advantages of higher breaking strain line, and increased abrasion resistance of the thicker diameter monofilament. From the monofilament top shot you should connect to a wind-on leader of 200lb breaking strain. Use a good-quality leader that can stand up to the punishment of the tuna’s teeth, without going too heavy to hamper the action of the lure. I use 200-pound Black Magic Tackle tough trace, which is not only abrasion-resistant but isn’t too stiff. Use a sharp appropriately sized J- hook for the skirts, I prefer finer gauge hooks with a small barb, which allows easier penetration of their hard mouths.

When trolling for tuna, the idea is to run a spread of lures, which means you need multiple rod and reel outfits in operation. A five-rod spread is ideal, but you can make do with a two or three rod spread.

MAY 2024 | ISSUE 144 WWW.HOOKEDUP.COM.AU 19
The author keeps his spread simple with four Black Magic skirts and a deep diving hardbody.

I run four 6-inch Black Magic Tackle Flea XT / Maggot XT skirted lures, as well as a single deep diver to cover any tentative fish that may not want to rise right up to the surface. When using deep divers, I recommend changing the trebles to single hooks, as trebles can open up if put under heavy drag pressure, especially during an extended fight. They can also cause excessive damage to the fish, making them unsuitable for release. Stagger each of the lures so they are a varied distance behind the boat, to not only ensure they mimic a school of baitfish, but it also means that if you are making tight turns and working around structure or a bait ball, your lines won’t get tangled. Each lure should have a designated position behind the boat, which is named accordingly. Each position increases in distance from the boat and are as follows: short corner, long corner, short rigger, long rigger, and the shotgun. You can use outriggers and shotgun riggers to increase the spread of your lures, as well as to lift the lure leaders out of the water, although this is not essential. Rod riggers that fit into the gunnel rod holders are generally more than sufficient. On many occasions if the bite on barrel bluefin is fickle, the shotgun position (which is the furthest lure back) is the most likely to produce a hook-up. The use of spreader bars or daisy chains in the shotgun position can be the combination that induces a bite on a quiet day, as the multiple skirts skimming across the surface act very effectively to catch the attention of a cruising barrel and raise them up to your spread.

As with all styles of fishing, ensure all your gear is in impeccable condition, and ensure every bit is rigged to handle that fish of a lifetime. Big bluefin tuna can easily dump 300m or more of line on their first run and have incredible stamina. Therefore, if you have any imperfections or weaknesses in your terminal tackle, they will find them. Your line

should be run out and checked for scuffs and nicks periodically (and replace if necessary), leaders should also be inspected / replaced, hooks should all be sharpened, and drag pressure should be set via a scale.

If you plan to keep a big bluefin, ensure you have two gaffs minimum (one short, one long), and some kind of tail rope. It is also worth buying a Black Magic Tackle Equalizer Harness and Gimbal pack. It may sit in the side pocket of the boat for months (or years!) without use, but if you hook a barrel, it will be near impossible to land it without one. If you are not interested in keeping a big bluefin, consider getting some research tags either from your local gamefishing club or direct from NSW DPI. Tagging bluefin is a great way of contributing to the management of this magnificent species.

Barrel Strategy

Once you are on the water, look for the usual signs of life. White birds, seals, dolphins and whales feeding are all positive signs,

Legend has it a school of giant tuna can defeat a lion.

but don’t always mean that the tuna are there. If you happen to mark a school of tuna on your sounder, or see them feeding on the surface, then start to put the time in and work the area systematically. This is especially important if you can identify them as big fish, as they typically will stay close to the bait for the whole day (and sometimes weeks at a time). You may need to work on them all day, going around and around until one finally comes up to take a lure. I call this ‘grinding’, and it can be incredibly mind-numbing spending all day in the same spot. But with sheer persistence, the rewards can be great. If you are working a bait ball with lots of life around it, try to get ahead of the direction the action is travelling in, and sweep the lures across the front. If the bait ball is concentrated in one area, make your passes close to the action, or run them straight through the centre of it all, but also be aware of other boats that may be working the area.

If the tuna are fickle, the best bite periods are usually first and last light, so try to fish one of these windows, or both. If you do get a hook-up, don’t panic! This is easier said than done when you are watching your reel empty with line at a ridiculous speed, with the sound of the ratchet howling in your ears. However, stay calm and either maintain speed for a few seconds if you want to try to get a double hook-up, or back the revs off but ensure the boat stays in forward gear. This will give you time to clear the rest of the rods without having the boat or lines float over themselves and result in a tangle. Once all the gear is in, get harnessed in and enjoy the fight!

Care For Your Catch

From the moment that barrel bluefin hits the deck, the clock starts ticking on the shelf life

of the meat, and how you treat it in the next 24 hours will define how it tastes, as well as how long it lasts. Be aware that you can harvest a huge amount of meat from a single barrel bluefin, so if you don’t know many people who like eating fish, have limited freezer space, or don’t have a vacuum sealer, consider releasing it and keeping a smaller school fish. It can be hard to consider in the moment, but before you start sinking gaffs left right and centre, think about how much fish you need to take for yourself, friends or family, and the time required to clean the fish, as well as storing them in the fridge and freezer. Have the conversation with your crew beforehand, or while you are fighting the fish. If you do decide to take the tuna, make sure you kill and bleed it promptly, then gut it ASAP and ice it down either in an Esky or fish bag. Ensure you have an adequately large and sharp knife to process the fish, as the skin of barrel bluefin is thick and tough. If you choose to freeze some, ensure that you vacuum seal the meat into meal-sized portions beforehand.

Always check your rigging twice to be sure, barrels will expose any weakness in your rig. Ready for processing. WWW.HOOKEDUP.COM.AU 24 MAY 2024 | ISSUE 144

DRIFTING FOR COD

Just moving with the ebb and flow of river life is something else –and a couple of big cod are just a bonus

Words & Images: Colby Lesko

WWW.HOOKEDUP.COM.AU 26 MAY 2024 | ISSUE 144
Spinnerbaits still stand strong as a highly effective cod lure.

Drifting the rivers for Murray cod has been something I’ve been lucky enough to do a lot of over the past few years and what an adventure it is. Drifting the rivers creates the perfect adventure while also opening up large stretches of water that don’t see as much angling pressure as areas around common access points. It doesn’t matter if you’re drifting for a couple of days or a week or more, there are plenty of spots and rivers to try. I’m still drifting new sections of river every season and this season I’ve drifted new pieces of water only. There’s a great sense of satisfaction when you make it right through a target section of water as it’s new territory as you round every bend.

This year I’ve been tackling some smaller rivers that are fast-flowing and shallow. This means drifting downstream is fine but travelling back up is nearly impossible. This means once you’re committed to the drift you have to complete it, which can make for fun times in rarely fished water. While doing a four-day drift in some new water this season I caught some awesome fish and had an amazing time, so this is my recap of the trip and what worked for me when drifting the rivers.

Firstly, you want to pick a river suited to the size of your boat. My cod fishing tinny is a 4.2m Quintrex Explorer Trophy so with a fairly flat bottom I can navigate large and medium-sized rivers, but some of the smaller tributaries of the Murray are just too small. The small rivers with shallow rocky rapids and pools are best fished from a 3m flatbottom punt or kayak. I need the rapids to be at least 20cm deep for my boat to drift down them and in anything shallower than this the boat bottoms out on the rocks and makes for some very hard pushing downstream. Once you have a river that matches the size of your

boat, it’s time to pick a section between two access points to drift. This can be as large or as small as you like and as a general rule in a fast-flowing river, I drift around 15km a day.

I Picked the Goulburn River in Victoria and elected to drift around 100km of river over the week. The first few days of the drift were quiet, only landing a few smaller cod, but once in the middle of the drift the fishing heated up and I landed some nice fish in the 80 to 90cm range on surface lures. Drifting the new water was awesome and catching fish in new locations is even better.

Having the boat set up to live out of for a few days or a week does require some preparation, but it really doesn’t require anything too serious. I just sleep in my swag either rolled out on the river’s sandbars at night or on the floor of my boat. Cooking is also very simple for me and I just take a small gas cooker with a pot and pan for coffee and cooking. Esky for cold food and drinks and a good selection of warm clothes and you’re good to go.

Power for the electric motor to last long trips can be a challenge for some. I’m running three lithium batteries in my boat so I can have power that lasts me a week or more of drifting without any issues. I also have a deep cycle AGM for starting my outboard motor that I have some 12-volt power plugs wired to for charging my phone and camera.

Cooking, camping and sleeping on the water is awesome and on this particular trip I had some great night camps on sandbars with a big fire by the river. Nights by the river with a set-up like this make catching fish just a bonus.

Bushman’s breakfast.

Weather and water flows are two things that can make or break your drift. If you have heavy rains forecast this can make things hard. Not only will all your stuff get soaked but chances are it will also destroy the water clarity in the river. If flows are susceptible to big changes from a dam above in the system this can also cut flows in half, making it hard to drift through the rapids in the smaller rivers. These are a couple of things to watch for and try to plan the trip around.

At the time of completing this recent drift I had a couple of rivers in mind for the trip in case one of the rivers was experiencing high flows or dirty water. The Goulburn River ended up being the pick of the bunch as it had great water clarity and the flows had been low and consistent for over a month. Flows remained steady for the duration of my drift and I had only one stormy day where I did get some rain but not enough to ruin the drift. The fishing was inconsistent, and this is fairly common with river cod. Most days were tough with the odd fish but the best

day was great with the two biggest cod of the trip coming 30 minutes apart on the same morning: a whole week on the water boiling down to one morning when everything aligns. This is very hard to predict and I didn’t think this was going to be the best morning of the trip, but it highlights the fact of staying for as many days as possible if you want to be on the water when the cod decide to bite.

Surface lures on the low light periods is still my favourite way to fish when drifting the rivers for cod but on this drift, I also fished hard-bodies and spinnerbaits during the day. All lures produced fish, but the two best fish came on the surface lures early morning. I did get some action off the surface in the afternoons but mornings were much better. You really want to fish a snag-proof lure such as a surface or spinnerbait where drifting these faster-flowing rivers, as using the electric motor to push back upstream into the flow to unsnag your lure quickly burns a lot of power. Most of my fishing was focused on the deeper bends of the rivers where I cast

the lures at the submerged timber in the river. River cod love their submerged laydown logs and I still have not found a better structure for producing fish. Some of the shallow rapids and straights that I drifted down the river were very shallow and the hull of the boat did hit the rocks on the bottom a few times but I managed to drift my way down to the car. Luckily, I did not have to head back upstream as this would not have been possible.

As far as tackle goes, I took a massive range of lures to cover all depths and scenarios as you never know what you’re going to drift into when exploring new water. Best lures for this trip were big surface paddlers and a range of Spinwright spinner baits. I take a spare combo on these longer trips as sometimes gear does fail. On this trip – due to my error – I did manage to snap a rod so was thankful I had a spare onboard. I’m currently running light swimbait rods for all my cod fishing – Samaki Zing Gen III swimbait rods rated to cast 5oz and 8ft long. I match these with a 300-size baitcaster reel spooled with 50lb X braid and 80lb leader.

Dusky stocking boosts flourishing fishery

We’ve given a helping hand to wild populations of dusky flathead in East Gippsland by stocking more fingerlings, funded by your fishing licence fees.

Over the last four years, we’ve stocked nearly 155,000 dusky fingerlings into the Gippsland Lakes (139,800), Bemm River (12,500) and Mallacoota (2,500).

Dusky stocking began in the Gippsland Lakes after the removal of commercial net fishing in 2020, delivering a key commitment of the State Government’s Go Fishing plan.

The fingerlings will take two to three years to grow to catchable size, which for dusky flathead is between 35 and 55cm to protect larger, breeding females.

To recognise this flourishing flathead fishery, which includes gigantic duskies up to 90cm, we’re offering a $1000 tackle prize to the first fisher to land a metre long dusky from the Gippsland Lakes.

Together, we’re delivering the Gippsland Lakes Recreational Fishery Plan and returning this iconic waterway to its former glory as a fishing mecca!

I use this heavier gear as I’m always targeting that trophy metre-plus fish but if you like to have some fun on the small fish some lighter gear is a good option. I also pack a spare electric motor remote and batteries. Due to losing an electric motor propeller on a drift once, I now also carry a spare prop. It’s worth thinking about these two spare options as a drifting boat with no electric motor in a fast-flowing river can make things very interesting.

AS WE COME INTO THE COOLER MONTHS OF THE YEAR, IT’S PRIME TIME TO BE OUT ON THE RIVERS CHASING BIG COD. THE BUGS AND MOZZIES ALL SEEM TO DISAPPEAR, THE SKI BOATS AND JET SKIS GET PUT AWAY FOR WINTER. OFTEN YOU HAVE GOT THE WHOLE RIVER TO YOURSELF.

As we come into the cooler months of the year, it’s prime time to be out on the rivers chasing big cod. The bugs and mozzies all seem to disappear, the ski boats and jet skis get put away for winter. Often you have got the whole river to yourself. The irrigation flows drop off and the big cod begin to bite. Sure, the numbers of small fish drop off a little but if you’re chasing that big fish there’s no better time to be on the water. Once daylight savings are over the days are shorter and there’s plenty of time to relax around the fire and take it all in.

It was another week to remember on the river, and waking up on the water and listening to the birds as the sun rises over this awesome country is hard to beat. The fishing was a little tougher than I’ve had before, but by seeing and exploring some new water and coming up with some great fish it still makes for an unbeatable trip. These drift trips have fast become one of my favourite forms of fishing and something I’ll be doing for many years to come.

VIBING FOR MULLOWAY

Modern technology plays its part in the successful pursuit of this estuary system favourite.

Words & Images: Jack Hammond

Mulloway are a popular estuary sport fish targeted by many anglers across the east coast of Australia. They can be found in rivers, creeks and estuary systems, as well as beaches, headlands and offshore reefs. There are various ways to target mulloway, from fishing dead and live baits to throwing a wide variety of lures. My preferred technique for catching mulloway is fishing soft vibes in 10 to 40 metres of water in an estuary system.

Port Stephens is well-known for its deepwater mulloway fishery, but there are several key factors to successful fishing here. Port Stephens is a large estuary system, with the main system reaching 40 metres in depth, making it a diverse fishery for all anglers.

Generally, deep-water mulloway can be found along the steep ledges around Soldiers Point, Fame Cove and North Arm Cove, specifically around the wreck structures scattered around the bay. In these areas there is significant tidal flow, making it the perfect haven for bait fish such as herring, yellowtail and tailor, enticing deep-water mulloway and leading them to their next meal.

Modern technology has changed the way we fish, and I rely heavily on my Lowrance sounder and ensure I always have it dialled in correctly as this makes all the difference.

There are three main functions I use my sounders for to find mulloway. The first is using my chart plotter set up with sonar chart and relief shading, which helps navigate around deep structure and pinpoints the right area where you want to position the boat. The second and third function I use is traditional sonar with side scan on a split screen to scan the bottom looking for bait balls and potential fish that are hard up against the structure underneath the boat and to the sides.

This will help you cover ground more efficiently, which allows you more time to fish

Mulloway feed more aggressively in low light conditions, overcast days will tend to trigger them for a longer WWW.HOOKEDUP.COM.AU 34 MAY 2024 | ISSUE 144
longer bite window. WWW.HOOKEDUP.COM.AU 35 MAY 2024 | ISSUE 144

and have your lure in the zone. Generally, mulloway will travel along the bottom side of a ledge where it meets reef to another bottom such as sand or mud, so using side scan will provide you with a good image of what the bottom structure looks like, and how far away from the structure you are in your boat, which is a handy function to optimise your chance of finding the fish.

If you are marking fish, a helpful tip is to mark a waypoint on your screen where the fish were holding up then use an electric motor on your boat to motor toward the fish and Spot-Lock above them without disturbing them with an anchor or engine running. Another handy tool I like to use is Live Sonar for mulloway.

Tide changes play a big part in the behaviour of mulloway in deep water. During a slack tide, bait fish become more active and will move around, stimulating predatory fish such as sharks, snapper, tailor and mulloway. Dependent on the size of the tide, you can generally fish for an hour before and an hour after the tide with lures, so it is important to minimise time-wasting activities such as scanning areas where there are no fish, and

instead focus on the right water structures to maximise potential bites. I prefer fishing the low tide as my theory is that the baitfish will flush down into the deep water to get cover on the run-out tide, so the mulloway will follow the bait, and the high tide pushes bait up into the shallows, and so the mulloway follow.

Moon phase is another interesting factor to consider when targeting mulloway as their behaviour changes accordingly. Throughout my experiences with mulloway, I have noticed on the lead-up to the full moon the fish will hold up in the deeper water and become more timid to catch, whereas on the lead-up to the new moon, the fish will generally become more active and feed in the shallows. I also like to refer mulloway back to my Murray cod and barramundi experiences with prime bite times. I believe another bite time for mulloway is a moon rise and a moon set, and studying the phases of the moon and what phase it sits at is another thing to keep in mind on those good days.

The most effective lure fishing technique for fishing deep water for mulloway is vertical vibing, using my Minn Kota and Lowrance

HDS12 pro.

I like to navigate around in stealth mode when chasing mulloway. This requires me to motor around using the electric motor and active target, and once I find the right spot and can see the fish I am targeting, I will use Spot-Lock and drop my vibe, monitoring the sounder until I can see it is near the fish. I then slow up when it is in line with where the fish is sitting in the water column and will start with a slow lift and let it sink back down to see how the fish reacts – keep your lure in the strike zone. If I see the fish is not interested, I will give it a more aggressive lift. This allows the vibe to put out a more agitated vibration and once the fish reacts and is interested, I will slowly hop the lure up in the water column, working its magic. Live Sonar can be frustrating some days as the fish won’t always play ball, but understanding a fish’s behaviour and learning different ways to agitate a fish to change its mood is what makes it a rewarding style of fishing.

The tackle I like to use for vertical jigging for mulloway is a rather light set-up compared with what most anglers use for mulloway, but I believe a sensitive rod with a fast taper and

Knowing how to handle mulloway that come from deep water is crucial. In the many years I have spent tagging and releasing mulloway, I have seen plenty of cases of barotrauma. Taking a patient approach and holding the necessary tools is the key to success in safely landing mulloway.

THE OLD FAITHFUL FORKTAIL SAMAKI VIBELICIOUS

I carry a release weight attached to a hand reel, and this can be retrieved from the NSW Department of Primary Industries. Alternatively, you can get this from your local tackle shop. Secondly, it is important to have a swim bladder spike.

If you can feel that the mulloway has a stomach full of gas, it may be helpful to pierce the swim bladder and lightly squeeze the gas out of them.

The best chance of survival for mulloway is to keep them out of the water for as little time as possible, snap a pic and return them to the water, giving them the best chance to swim off and fight another day.

The best practice when releasing mulloway is to keep them in the water as long as possible and aim to swim them well for a strong release. This large jew took a liking to a Samaki Vibelicious in Hardy Head colour.

SOUTH OZ GUMMIES

They may be a bit smaller in the south but they’re high on the hit-list for anglers.

Words & Images: Jamie Crawford

If you’re not from temperate Australia it’s easy to miss the appeal of targeting gummy sharks. In many parts of our country, anglers take great lengths to avoid sharks while on the water – especially if they have a sweet tooth for reef fish. But gummies are different, being more akin to regular target species than a shark, and they rate highly on the hit list for southern anglers.

I have always enjoyed targeting gummy sharks here in my home state of SA. I used to spend a lot of time chasing these toothless sharks from the beach, but fishing in the surf in the early hours of the morning can be hard work. And while I enjoy my surf fishing, I was keen to find an easier alternative for targeting gummy sharks, and one that was accessible for easy afternoon sessions.

This put my attention to our local bay waters and along the fringing shallow coastline, trying to work out a pattern for consistently hooking gummies in this near-shore setting. Over the past five years we’ve been investing a bit of time chasing gummies in this setting, and the strike rate has been improving to now-reliable levels.

Where

Gummy sharks are located around the cooler southern half of Australia, from Geraldton in the west to the mid-north coast of NSW. However, it’s the colder coastline through SA, Victoria and Tasmania that boasts the greater population of gummy sharks. They roam surf beaches, around deeper reefs and into shallow bays at different cycles of the moon and times of the year, so they are quite varied in the environment in which they are found. In this feature I’ll focus on the shallow bay and nearshore fishing. And while I’ll be detailing the fishing here in SA, I’m sure this approach can be applied to bay systems in other states too – it’s just the timing may be different in other locations.

Gummy sharks are great fun to hunt down, fight and they’re amazing on the plate..

Most of my gummy shark fishing takes place inside bay systems here on the Eyre Peninsula. Our main bay is quite shallow, with plenty of sand bars and smaller inlets, with a defined channel to enter and exit the bay. Most of the water is only 2-4 metres deep, but the main channel and the deeper holes drop down to around 10 metres in parts, and it’s these deeper sections where we want to focus our attention.

You must be cautious when anchoring in these deeper sections, as they are often in the main thoroughfare for navigation, and we see a lot of commercial crayfish and sardine vessels entering and exiting this area, along with oyster boats, so it can be busy. By using your sounder it should be possible to find some deeper holes away from the main channel, or at least off to the side.

We have several bay systems on the Eyre Peninsula where the gummies consistently move into the tidal shallows to feed, but these benthic (bottom-dwelling) sharks can also be found along the coastline fringing these bays and inside the bottom sections of our Gulf waters.

Above and below: the author favours a single Suicide hook in 6/0 to 8/0 finished off with a half hitch.

When

We have fished these shallow bays right through the year, but on the Eyre Peninsula the bay fishing for gummy sharks is at its best from December to May. The fishing seems more consistent in the week before and leading through to the week following the full moon, but it’s still possible to catch gummies around the dark of the moon, albeit in less numbers.

When fishing outside the bay system and along the coastline fringing the entrance, we get a good run of gummies from September to November, and we see some big females at this time of year, which are always best released.

When fishing along the coastline we’re often targeting water in the 10-15m range, and rather than focusing on a deeper hole we’re often fishing in the vicinity of some nearby reef. However, we avoid fishing over the top of the reef as the by-catch of unwanted species can be painful.

How

We’ll try to arrive at our chosen location about two hours before the top of the tide, with the turn of the tide being a peak feeding period for gummy sharks, especially inside a bay where the water movement can be funnelled and exacerbated by the shallows. If we are anchoring in the main channel, we’ll try to pick a spot where the wind is pushing in the same direction as the tide, otherwise your berley and baits will want to run underneath the boat. Also, when the wind is pushing against stronger tidal movement it can create sharp chop, making it uncomfortable on anchor, even inside a bay system.

Once we have dropped anchor, the first job is to start the berley trail. I use a good-sized berley pot filled with chopped pilchards, old fish frames etc, and place a small rag soaked in tuna oil inside the pot. This oil-soaked rag does as much, if not more, than the solid berley in the pot, and I try to renew this rag every hour (I have a small bucket with several extra rags soaking in oil).

I’ll also throw out some loose handfuls of chopped pilchards, provided the tide isn’t pushing too hard. If it looks like the tide will carry the chopped berley too far, then I’ll just aim to throw the loose berley as the tide starts to slow towards the turn of the tide.

We find the gummies are quite active around the slack water as the tide starts to turn, and it’s quite common to pick up a gummy or two during this tidal change, especially if the berley has been established for at least an hour.

Gummy sharks are opportunistic feeders and will happily pick up quite small morsels of berley and bait, but unfortunately so do eagle rays. During the higher water temps of the year the eagle rays are very active inside our bays, and most sessions we’ll have an encounter or two from a bait-stealing eagle ray.

WE FIND THE GUMMIES ARE QUITE ACTIVE AROUND THE SLACK WATER AS THE TIDE STARTS TO TURN, AND IT’S QUITE COMMON TO PICK UP A GUMMY OR TWO DURING THIS TIDAL CHANGE.

Try and use the freshest bait possible.

But once the water temps start to drop during mid to late autumn, the ray action starts to subside and fade away. Small bronze whaler sharks are a common by-catch during the warmer months and are more welcome than the eagle rays. Using mono trace line, though, it’s a hit-and-miss affair whether we’ll stay connected long enough to land these feisty little whaler sharks.

After setting the berley trail, we’ll fan some baits back into the direction of the berley. Some good baits include small finger-sized fillets of tuna, silver trevally, slimy mackerel, snook and salmon trout. Small strips of squid along with squid heads are also good baits. The humble pilchard is also a great bait but doesn’t stay on the hooks as well as the aforementioned options, but if small fish or crabs aren’t too bad you can get away with half pilchard baits.

Berley is a must!

I prefer using a running rig with a running sinker clip (such as the Kwik Change clips). These let you change the sinker during a session if the tide increases. We’ll normally use a 1.5oz sinker while fishing in the channel but will increase to 2.5 or even 3oz when the tide is pushing hard. This running sinker sits above a 3/0 swivel (either crane or ball bearing swivel), with the trace line running below the swivel.

I use a single hook on a 100cm length of 60lb supple monofilament trace line. Gummy sharks don’t have teeth, so 60lb is plenty. If there isn’t any by-catch around then you can drop to 40lb trace; the lighter the trace line, the more bites. A gummy shark will often mouth a bait and transmit subtle bites, especially when the water movement is slack around the turn of the tide. A single hook from 6/0 to 8/0 is fine, with offset octopus or suicide pattern hooks being really effective.

When fishing with the kids, I quite often use an 8/0 circle hook, which is effective at pinning a shark in the corner of the mouth. These hooks are best fished with the rod left in the holder and allowed to load up under the weight of the shark. But when gummies are playing with a bait, I prefer to strike to set the hook with the non-circle patterns. All these hooks are chem-sharp or nickel-coated, which will rust away quite quickly if lost in the mouth of an eagle ray or bronze whaler.

Gummy sharks are great fun on the right tackle – and being clean fighters they can be subdued on light gear, but because of the eagle ray by-catch we are often forced to fish a bit heavier than would otherwise be required. We use 6000-sized spin reels with 40lb braid, together with a PE3 rod. I like to have a little bit of length with the rod –something around 7ft is ideal for casting baits back into the berley trail, and if the boat is swinging on anchor in the breeze, the longer

rods make it easier to spread the main lines away from each other.

If there is no unwanted by-catch around, you can drop down to a 4-8kg rod (or PE2 equivalent) matched to a 4000-sized reel with 20lb braid to maximise the fun factor. Essentially a snapper outfit will double as a good gummy shark outfit.

On the Plate

Gummy sharks are one of the sweetest sharks on the table, offering a mild white fillet. To be honest we tag and release most of the gummies we catch, but we’ll still take home the occasional shark, with the flake fillets always popular with our family. If you intend to keep a gummy for the dinner table, dispatch the shark as soon as possible, and remove the head and fins before chilling the trunk in ice. Have fun!

A PE3 rod and 6000 size reel loaded with 40lb braid can handle the gummies and the bycatch. At this size they’re great to eat and still yield a lot of meat.
