TD SOL MQ

SMOOTH WINDING, STRONG AND RESPONSIVE

The famous TD SOL MQ goes to another level in 2025 courtesy of AIRDRIVE DESIGN. AIRDRIVE DESIGN is the pursuit of ultimate response, with its lightweight rotor and bail arm design reducing the rotational mass that spins around the spool with each rotation of the handle. This reduction delivers lower start-up inertia and provides e ortless reeling.

TD SOL

The 25 TD SOL MQ’s body is made from ZAION V material, a high rigidity carbon composite material which is impervious to the harsh destructive elements of saltwater fishing. Incorporating a AIRDRIVE ROTOR and seamless one-piece AIRDRIVE BAIL, this lightweight and rigid rotor design gives TD SOL MQ incredibly low start-up inertia, meaning the feel for the angler is one of lightweight rotation and incredible performance.

PROPOSED VIC KINGFISH BAG LIMIT REDUCTION

Recreational anglers have welcomed the opportunity to further improve the quality of Victoria’s rebounding kingfish fishery through a proposal to reduce the daily bag limit from five to two. Victorian Fisheries Authority CEO Travis Dowling said kingfish are considered royalty by saltwater fishers right along the coast, from Mallacoota in the east to Portland in the west, including southern Port Phillip and Western Port. Mr Dowling said the proposed change would leave more kingfish in the water to be shared amongst experts and beginners and encourage responsible fishing practices that balance taking home a meal of fresh fish with continued improvements in local stock levels. Recreational anglers are encouraged to provide their feedback to taylor.hunt@vfa.vic.gov.au by 1 October 2025. vfa.vic.gov.au/kingfishbag

52kg of Oman GT for the author. This is why anglers make the journey to Oman.

DESERT GIANTS

The biggest giant trevally on the planet makes the Arabian Sea an epic fishing destination.

& IMAGES : SAM GILCHRIST

WORDS

This story is a special one for many, many reasons. It takes me back to my earliest years of reading every fishing magazine article and dreaming of what could be. Back then my dreams were mostly of yellowtail kingfish, marlin and longtail tuna off the rocks (optimistic for a 6-year-old!).

These dreams evolved and I fell in love with topwater sports fishing after reading an article on kings, wahoo and Spanish mackerel not far from my local haunt. It was after experiencing the rush of casting long, for big bites and fish that required premium kit and a can-do attitude to stop, that I knew my life had changed forever.

In any angler’s quest for topwater challenges, the giant trevally (GT) must rank among the top three (mine would be the giant trevally, dogtooth tuna and yellowtail kingfish). I had embarked on many a journey north in pursuit of the

mighty GT and in doing so had endured many a sleepless night driving, many a service station and many casts for little reward.

However, among the effort there were some wonderful rewards. I will never forget my first 30kg GT in Australia and my best locally is approximately 40kg. In my quest to chase down the biggest GTs on the planet, I discovered No Boundaries Oman. The operation and the fishery are both world-class and deserve their reputation for excellence.

Discovering a potential trip, destination and or charter online is one thing; saving the money, life circumstances lining up and then shelling out the hard-earned is another.

I never believed I would ever see Oman or have a shot at an Omani GT, let alone the 50kg specimens the coast is famous for. Although sometimes the ceiling we

place on ourselves and our life isn’t real, and it’s up to you to smash through it and live out your dreams.

THE DECISION

It started with a social media ad offering a $US1,000 discount – enough motivation to get things started. Next step was finding a fishing buddy, which I expected to be challenging but a call to my great mate Lee Younan-Wise and we were on. Lee is a very, very experienced and capable angler, and not many humans can cast PE10 and heavy lures all day for six days straight.

THE JOURNEY

We flew Emirates, leaving Brisbane at 1am for a 14-hour flight to Dubai, then flew to Salalah, Oman, for a night. Salalah is a beautiful place and well worth a look. We met a fellow on the domestic flight, Raouf, who took us for dinner and a tour of the town.

Arabian days.

His kindness and generosity was not something you encounter every day – all while he and his family lived in exile from the war-torn city of Yemen, a truly remarkable human.

The next morning we were greeted by our shy but hilarious South African guide, picked up another angler then began the four-hour journey north to the lodges, taking the spectacular coastal road.

We spent some time prepping gear, meeting an amazing group of anglers from Mexico-based Los Locos fly fishing, who were attempting to launch Monster Energy into the sports-fishing record books by jamming a 50kg-plus GT on fly –very cool dudes! Then we were treated to a fire, dinner and some stingray fishing off the beach, a magical way to start the trip.

The final leg... under normal circumstances a group would meet the

mother ship (Notus Temptress) in Salalah and steam 14 or so hours to Hallaniyat Island, approximately 30 miles off the coast, but wild weather meant we were ferried out on 30ft-plus tenders.

THE FISHING

Lee put in a dummy half-length cast just to feel things out then on his second (but first real cast) we were greeted by a 48kg black GT that annihilated his lure on a leading edge in 18m of water. I wouldn’t say the fish screamed off, but it did play fair, so we thought, heading off the reef and going deep. The fish was sidehooked and used its body to head deeper and deeper. This puts the angler and his gear under immense load, while minimising the effect on the fish. Twenty minutes in and Lee was buckled over the gunwale; this was becoming torture.

I asked our guide to steadily drive off the fish in an attempt to plane him up and support Lee in this fight. Sure enough, this worked and Lee was gaining line back, an incredible effort considering the first 30 minutes were spent directly above the fish.

Forty-something minutes after the initial bite and Lee’s PB GT was on the deck... a magnificent specimen that pulled the scales to 48kg. We thought, ‘You ripper, we might be on here!’. Four-hundred casts each later without a swirl and we were quickly back to reality – persist boys! There was an ominous crack in Lee’s lure after this battle.

It’s important to mention here, the water temp was around 28 degrees at this point, green in some areas, blue but not clear in others.

Morning two we went a long way to another island, which had some absolutely incredible scenery and structure – it felt like monster fish territory.

First drift of the morning and Lee cast the same lure that did the damage the day before; maybe 10m from the boat an Omani monster detonates on the lure and Lee rips the hooks in and begins to lose line very quickly. However, this time equipment failure costs Lee his second trophy fish. We’re OK, two opportunities at world-class fish in a few hours isn’t bad, so let’s keep rolling.

Our guide Dazza (Kiwi GOAT) resets us on another drift while Lee swaps out his outfit and lure for a Hots Keiko 240. Again, 10m or less from the rod tip Lee says, “On me, on me” so I have time to turn and see a fish in the 60kg range absolutely unleash on Lee’s lure with incredible power and ferocity. Lee is on, but again, gear failure is costly... and the failure could have been much worse.

Virtually on impact Lee’s 220lb leader exploded at the connection to the lure, though before this both single Jobu hooks were straightened... and I mean straight. I was extremely lucky: while Lee was walloping the hooks into this fish, the failures occurred, sending his loaded PE10 rod into my face with a CRACK! Thankfully I had my sunnies on as the rod cracked me across the bridge of the nose, flush with the bridge of the sunglasses, so some minor bruising on the nose and that was it. It could have been a lot worse.

Now this fish was a true Omani beast. Lee was on fire and deserved more for his efforts. Morale was teetering on low. Back to work: cast, sweep, repeat. After lunch, the afternoon session was uneventful; the water was green and looked average, and the fishing reflected that.

On day three, things had changed. The water had rolled over and was clear, probably 25m visibility and hot (31 to 33 degrees).

Arabian nights.
Arabian days.

Generally speaking, these temps are too hot for GTs to be really active, so we knew we were in for a challenge. (Note: We caught quite a few smaller GTs ranging from 10 to probably 25kg, though this was a big fish trip and this is a big fish article. We also caught mega queenfish, mahi mahi – or dorado – and we sighted many sailfish, wahoo and a few goldspot wrasse, so we were never bored.)

Dazza had called lunch but spotted a leading point into the 25 knots of breeze and called for one last drift. I punch a cast toward the point, nothing special, same as the 3,500 casts prior, but this time I notice an isolated bommie off the point that looks to have current hitting it so I ripped the cast into the leading edge of this rock. The Carpenter Bluefish 140 swims beautifully.

Three sweeps in and there’s an explosion on my lure, one set, two set, three set, ten... Finally, I have a bite from a GT that loads the Daiwa Spartan SB PE8-10 – we’re dancing

now! I underestimated the fish in the initial exchanges, and it wasn’t until the head shakes, the weight of her and the power through the Spartan that I began to think this was my best for the trip (though that was currently at only 15kg). Mid-fight Lee asks how I’m feeling, and I respond, “I’m in heaven, brother.” Using short, precise pumps and the incredible cranking power of the 25 Saltiga 18000, she was boatside.

Fortunately for me she bit the lure flush in the middle and the multiple hook sets drove the 7/0 BKK GT REX treble home into the corner of the jaw, and she was ours.

Into the sling and up she goes; pulling the scales from 50 to 61kg in terrible conditions we called her potentially low at 52kg. The dream was a reality, and after some amazing photos and video, we lowered her into the sea with the XXXL lip grips and Dazza made the call to tow her 100m to a protected beach. It was at this point that we swam with this beautiful animal, ensuring she was

fit for release, and in a surreal moment we released her and she swam out into the bay, then doubled back and swam between Lee and me in the surf before slowly cruising off into the depths, as if to say, “See ya fellas, nice to meet you”.

Lunch was even sweeter that day!

Days four and five were very similar: super-hot water and many casts for bites, but we did not see another large fish so the grind continued. One afternoon blew 40 knots so we joined the Monster Energy crew for a fly session off the beach. Permit, queenfish, small GTs and blue wrasse were all sighted. Now, I haven’t fly fished for 20 years and was average compared with the others, so I swapped back to a PE4 topwater set-up, which I quickly regretted after a 30kg-plus GT smoked my stickbait off the beach. I chased this animal around 200m down the beach and had her beat, though the pressure of a 6ft shore break and the fish was too much for the BKK trebles, which straightened and the fish swam off.

The author’s Carpenter Bluefish 140 that captured his 52kg GT gets a place on the wall of fame.

From light jigging on 10–12lb PE to vertical battles on 80–90 lb PE, Tunageat FC is built for serious anglers. Engineered for straight strength, knot security, and abrasion resistance, it handles every jigging style with confidence. Sunline’s technology ensures your leader performs when it counts, giving you the edge to target bigger fish.

They can’t all be monsters.

Interestingly, the next day the fly boys hooked a large queenfish off the same beach and said a GT of monster proportions grabbed the queenie and swam off with it in its mouth.

Day six was our last and we had an extended morning session before packing down and heading back to the lodges on the mainland. We’d worked our butts off and left nothing in the tank, conquering some proper fish on the way.

THE FINAL WORD

This trip exceeded expectations. Yes, it was a significant investment, but the journey, the Omani scenery, the No Boundaries team and the company (my mate Lee) made for an investment in life experiences that you only gain by getting out there and enjoying what you love doing – fishing. Quality gear is a must when battling these monster GTs. This Glide Stick 24

SNAPPER SEASON

BUYER’S GUIDE

The season isn’t far from from reaching peak levels- are you ready to go when the fish are?

The Victorian snapper season is almost here, and for any angler serious about getting on the fish early or when that hot bite comes, there’s no such thing as being too prepared. When the fishing is slow, you want to be sure every strike turns into a hook-up, and when it’s hot and fast, you need to be organised to make the most of it—spend a bit of time now making sure everything is in order, and you’ll save yourself hours of frustration and missed opportunities once you’re on the water. Being prepared isn’t just about having the latest gear or spending a fortune—it’s about making sure what you already have is in tip-top shape and ready to perform when it counts. However, if your gear is due for an upgrade and you’re a keen snapper angler, get yourself to the tackle store and make some upgrades. That might be as simple as new line, leader and hooks, or new reels and rods.

If you are in the market for new gear, you don’t need top-shelf equipment, but you don’t want cheap gear either. The commonly caught fish that range in the 1–4 kg size range won’t expose too many faults in your gear, but the fish that sit in the 5–10 kg range are a different story. Those bigger fish won’t see the deck of your boat if you’re using inferior tackle.

Start with your outfits and tackle. Check your reels carefully, service them thoroughly, and spool on fresh line if it’s

looking tired. Inspect your rods for any damage, make sure guides are smooth and free from burrs, and check that your reel seat locks are functioning. There’s nothing worse than hooking up and worrying if your gear is going to hold. Tie up rigs ahead of time—don’t do it on the boat. Pre-make them so they’re ready to simply tie on; you don’t want to be making rigs on the boat.

THE COMMONLY CAUGHT FISH THAT RANGE IN THE 1–4 KG SIZE RANGE WON’T EXPOSE TOO MANY FAULTS IN YOUR GEAR, BUT THE FISH IN THE 5–10 KG RANGE ARE A DIFFERENT STORY.

pair of pliers for removing hooks, a good working net and a solid, sharp bait knife. It’s about thinking ahead, planning for contingencies, and giving yourself the best chance to make the most of every opportunity. And while preparation is crucial, having the right gear can make that prep work easier and more effective. In the pages that follow, we’ll take a close look at the essential tackle, rods, and reels for the season in our buyer’s guide, so you can hit the water confident, organised, and ready to put snapper on the deck from the very first outing.

There is a huge fallacy amongst some anglers that bait fishing gear doesn’t need to be as good as lure gear, and this isn’t true. No matter what you’re targeting or how, there are the right tools for the job, and the better the tools, the more enjoyable each fight will be.

A little preparation goes a long way. From checking tackle and rigs to inspecting your boat, every small step adds up to a smoother, more successful day on the water. Sometimes it’s ensuring you have little things such as plenty of rags, a good

Its stretchy, durable sack can be filled with fish, squid or octopus, then plugged with a glowing Occy Head Skirt. As fish bite, oily bait releases through perforations, creating a feeding frenzy until the big predators strike.

We understand that with snapper fishing you need several outfits, but these days you can get high-quality rods and reels for very reasonable prices.

Many snapper anglers use cheap rods, not because they can’t afford to spend extra but they don’t understand the benefit of a quality rod. You want a rod that is sensitive in the tip to detect bites from small fish such as pinkies and flathead, or to know when a starfish is sitting on your bait. You want awareness of everything that’s happening with

your bait, and good rods indicate any movement. If there’s no bait on the hook, you’re not going to catch fish. Targeting snapper is not a set and forget method –you’re constantly working those rods. You also want power and a good mix of graphite and glass with a medium-fast action. This allows for faster and more efficient hook sets, whether they’re in the snapper rack or you’re setting the hooks. Slow, soft glass rods miss fish. I don’t care if your dad and grandpa used them, we’re past that now, and this style of rod will

DAIWA SALTIST PE 702 3-4 - $209

The Daiwa Saltist PE3/4 quickly won us over when we tested it last year, proving itself as the ultimate Port Phillip Bay snapper rod. Its long full EVA butt tucks neatly under the arm during a fight and sits perfectly in snapper racks, making it both comfortable and practical. The blank strikes the ideal balance— ultra-sensitive for detecting the lightest bites yet powerful enough to control hard-fighting fish. With a medium-fast action and a perfectly matched guide train, it delivers excellent casting and fish-handling performance. Outfitted with Fuji ‘O’ ring Ocean guides and anti-tangle frames, it ensures flawless line management in all conditions.

cost you fish. I rarely miss fish anymore since using modern graphite composite rods with a medium-fast action. Below is a list of the rods that I use and highly recommend. They vary in price, features and quality and the expensive models are better, but I’d be happy to run a fleet of the cheaper models.

There aren’t a huge number of what we consider great snapper rods for bait fishing on the market, but we think over the years we’ve found the best models available.

DAIWA BG BLUEWATER S70 PE3-5 - RRP $134.99

The Daiwa BG Bluewater S70-3/5 is the perfect choice for anglers wanting a reliable rod without the premium price tag. Strong enough to handle the heavier sinkers of Western Port yet sensitive enough for lighter setups in Port Phillip, it offers true versatility. Built on a unidirectional graphite/fibreglass blank it has the power to control the bigger fish and keeps the smaller fish fun. Outfitted with titanium oxide guides, full EVA grip for fighting and the snapper racks as well as a rubber gimbal so it won’t spin in the coambing racks or rocket launcher.

SHIMANO EXTRACTION 722 7-15KG - RRP $249

We’ve been running the Extraction 722 7–15kg since its release in 2022 and it has become a favourite for snapper fishing across both bays, as well as targeting gummy sharks. Tough, powerful and versatile, this rod is built around Shimano’s T45 High Modulus Carbon Graphite Blank Construction, offering strength, lightness and sensitivity in perfect balance. The Fuji K-Series Tangle-Free Guides with SiC inserts ensure smooth line flow, reduced friction and improved casting performance. Finished with a Fuji Graphite DPS reel seat for a secure, lightweight fit, the Extraction delivers reliability and performance, making it a standout choice for serious anglers.

SHIMANO RAIDER SNAPPER HEAVY 6-10KG - RRP $149.99

The Shimano Raider 7’0” Snapper Spin Heavy 6–10kg is the only two-piece rod we recommend, offering outstanding value without compromising performance. Designed with Port Phillip snapper fishing in mind, it balances finesse with plenty of stopping power. The full-length cork butt is practical in the racks, comfortable in a fight, and easier to keep clean than EVA. Built on a 30T graphite blank, it delivers strength, responsiveness and a crisp, lightweight feel. The latest model features upgraded Fuji FazLite K guides for reduced weight and improved sensitivity, while custom Shimano reel seats complete a rod that looks sharp and fishes even better.

BAIT ANGLERS BUYER’S GUIDE- REELS

With the majority of Port Phillip Bay experiencing moderate to low tidal movement, targeting snapper successfully is done with finesse—small ball sinkers, light monofilament line, and sensitive rods where anglers are ready to set the hooks into fish. You therefore don’t need big reels like in the days of old. Modern reels in the 4000–5000 size range offer enough line capacity, more than enough drag, and, importantly, the sensitivity to better detect bites and hook fish. We’ve been through the full gamut of reels over the years when it comes to snapper fishing, and we think we’ve pretty much nailed it when it comes to the best snapper reel options. These reels strike the balance of value, performance, strength, and durability over many years of hard fishing.

WESTERN PORT

Western Port requires a very different style of fishing to Port Phillip. The tide is far stronger than Port Phillip and therefore requires much heavier sinkers, heavier rods, and larger reels. As it’s better to fish with braid in Western Port, the reels don’t need to be much bigger than Port Phillip, but having one set of gear for both has never worked out well for anyone. The reels for Western Port need great cranking power and durability.

SURFIN’ SALMON

Casting slugs for salmon is some of the best fun you can have on a beach.

WORDS & IMAGES : OLLIE WOOD

Arripis trutta, better known as the mighty Australian salmon, are an iconic temperate-water species found all along our epic South Aussie coastline, from the far western reaches of the rugged yet stunning Eyre Peninsula to the surf beaches of the southeast.

These fish are a popular target for surf anglers due to their hard, acrobatic fights, widespread accessibility, aggression, bait-smashing tendencies, reputation as a fantastic bait choice for larger species, and, when fresh, their taste.

Although you can target these fish in slow-moving, sheltered flat environments, my preferred locations to find large schools of feeding salmon are along the hundreds of kilometres of surf beach coastline in this great state, casting metals and lures from the convenience of the shore.

In this article, I’ll cover why I love targeting this species, how to find them along surf beaches, how to target them using lures and metals, and some top tips to increase your catch rate, ensuring you get out there and catch some of these truly iconic fish.

WHERE TO FIND FISH

Beach fishing for beginners can be a tough prospect. Searching for congregations of fish over near-endless kilometres of coastline can feel like looking for a needle in a haystack. But once you learn to read the surf and its structures, the process becomes much easier. Australian salmon are actually quite predictable, and with some tips and know-how, you can locate feeding schools yourself.

Reading the surf can be daunting for new anglers. However, with some basic knowledge of surf structures, currents, and fish feeding behaviour, it becomes far more attainable. To the untrained eye, surf beaches may appear structureless and fishless. In reality, there is an unregimented mix of sandbars, gutters, reefs, and rips, all providing structure for both prey and predatory species. When approaching a surf beach, I try to gather as much information as possible from a high vantage point. This allows me to identify structures and potential holding spots for fish.

The key to understanding this species isn’t just knowing where they may be,

but why they might be in each specific location along often massive stretches of beach. Surf beaches are energetic environments, often housing strong rips, large swell, and surges that make living in these waters a tiring exercise for any bait or predatory species. That’s why predatory fish often sit where stunned baitfish might wash after being swept by strong currents.

I look for gutters within casting range, preferably leading into a rip or alongside sandbanks where white water is washing into the gutter. Another excellent target point is the back eddies alongside large rips, where prey fish are likely to wash into. Conversely, avoid casting directly into strong rips, as these can disrupt lure action and hold large clumps of seaweed, ready to snag your lures. Likewise, if a likely location isn’t holding fish, don’t be afraid to move along to the next promising spot, which could mean the difference between finding a couple of fish versus a dozen.

Although we are often lure fishing, adding some burley to the water can help keep fish present in your chosen gutter or even bring schools of fish into your area.

The Metal Addict range offers great action and amazing detail.

LURE CHOICE

Now that you have found a likely spot, the next challenge you might face is: “what lure do I throw?” This question is always on my mind when approaching a target area, and I have created an easy way of selecting the right lure. If you have been around the fishing community for a while, a very popular term you may hear is “match the hatch.” This statement rings true for Aussie salmon and basically refers to throwing a lure that mimics what the fish are feeding on, or are likely to be feeding on, given your location. I find that the bait quite often present on many surf beaches is light blue/ grey in colour, giving off silver flashes when spooked, so selecting a lure in blue and silver is my personal favourite. My favourite type of lure to throw at these exciting fish are undoubtedly metals. They’re cheap, cast a mile, and are super easy to use, requiring a simple fast wind and pause retrieval.

Undoubtedly my favourite brand of metals to throw is the Metal Addict range by Little Jack. They are slightly higher priced but offer a fantastic and effortless action, with hyper-realistic profiles and colours that Aussie salmon seemingly cannot resist. Another bonus is the quality, sharp, rust-free hooks they use. The simpler Halco range is a cheaper option but still offers decent catch rates; I

would advise swapping the trebles out for a higher-quality option to avoid rust. Aussie salmon, being the bait-fishsmashing connoisseurs they are, aren’t just restricted to metal lures. In calmer, less wavy conditions, they are just as likely, if not more likely, to smash minnows, stickbaits, and poppers. A personal favourite method of mine for targeting these bait annihilators is poppers. Surface fishing for any fish is absolutely thrilling, and for Aussie salmon, this is no different. They will thrash, splash, and smash poppers, even getting airborne in their attempts to devour your lure. Depending on the size of the bait present, the size of the salmon, and the conditions, the size of the lure will vary, but given the often currentfilled conditions surrounding beach fishing, I find larger poppers around the ten centimetre and above range to be the most successful.

CONDITIONS & TIME OF YEAR

Like all fish species, australian salmon have distinct conditions when they love to feed. Fortunately for anglers, these conditions are quite broad, especially on surf beaches. Although these fish have a broad bite time in a range of conditions, there are conditions I prefer to avoid for ease of fishing. In most locations, large swells can make fishing extremely difficult, kicking up masses of

seaweed and causing large currents that affect the action of certain lures. Strong, onshore winds are also a no-go for beach fishing, making casting and fishing very challenging.

On the flip side, although Australian salmon bite in a broad range of conditions, I do have my preferred times to target them. I have found that lower and fluctuating pressure systems bring on the bite compared to stable, higherpressure systems.

Tides are another important factor when targeting these fish. However, it is not as simple as saying one certain tide is best, as each location may fish better on different tides. For example, a gutter that may not be present at low tide may be full of feeding salmon at high tide. The best way to determine this is to fish a spot in multiple tides and conditions, documenting your most successful sessions and the conditions present. Overcast or sunny conditions don’t tend to make a huge difference when targeting australian salmon; rather, these conditions will influence my lure selection. During sunny conditions, I will choose lures that are shiny and reflective, catching the eye of feeding fish. In dull conditions with clear water, I may choose lures with brighter colours, or in clear water, lures that offer a silhouette-like profile to best match fleeing baitfish.

They make for amazing bait and if bled well they can be great on the table when fresh.

SETUPS

To enhance your fishing experience and give yourself the best chance to catch, it is important to have a dedicated surf casting setup. Some must-haves include a longer casting rod, which I personally prefer to be nine to ten foot in length with a cast weight rating of twenty to sixty grams. A carbon/graphite rod is essential for longer casting distance and greater sensitivity than fibreglass.

There is such a thing as too long or too heavy; rods above 12 foot are cumbersome and harder to cast and work lures effectively.

For a reel pairing, a size 3000 to 4000 reel is ample, spooled with good-quality braided line. On my personal reel, I use Gosen’s 8ply jigging braid in PE 2. This provides optimal casting distance and bite sensitivity.

A good braid is necessary for unparalleled sensitivity, strength, and castability, outclassing mono or nylon equivalents tenfold.

Pairing braid with a long leader is also a requirement; I often use 20lb fluorocarbon for added abrasion resistance. This can be adjusted depending on conditions: in calm, clear

THE KEY TO SUCCESS LIES IN READING THE SURF, IDENTIFYING PRODUCTIVE STRUCTURES AND UNDERSTANDING HOW BAITFISH AND PREDATORS INTERACT WITH THESE AREAS.

water, I may drop to 12-15lb, and in more challenging conditions with larger fish, I may increase it.

If you are new to beach fishing, I would recommend not splurging on a setup. These rods and reels will be exposed to salt water, sand, hard fights, and repeated max-effort casting, placing huge importance on durability and maintenance.

I generally fully service my surf setups once a year for consistent high-end performance, while maintaining a

To summarise, the Australian salmon is an iconic and much-loved sportfish along South Australia’s coastline, stretching from the wild Eyre Peninsula to the surf beaches of the southeast. Famous for their speed, aggression, and aerial fights, these fish are a top target for both seasoned anglers and beginners.

They are also highly valued as bait for larger species and, when fresh, can be enjoyed on the table.

The key to success lies in reading the surf, identifying productive structures such as gutters, sandbanks, and rips, and understanding how baitfish and predators interact with these areas. Matching lures to local prey is crucial, with metals, stickbaits, and poppers providing exciting and reliable results. Conditions, tides, and setups also play an important role, with tailored gear ensuring better casting and more effective retrieval. By combining the right knowledge, equipment, and persistence, anglers can consistently experience the thrill of targeting these powerful and truly iconic fish.

DECOY TERMINAL

The Decoy jigging Single Seargent N offers secure hook ups and and an easy release.

Anglers often place huge focus on a lure—profile, action, colour—but at the end of the day, it’s the hooks that catch the fish. Terminal tackle is the unsung hero of any rig, yet it’s surprising how often it’s overlooked. Many lures imported from overseas come fitted with hooks intended for different species or conditions, and some use lower-grade steel that corrodes quickly or bends under pressure. Even the most expensive lure can be let down by poor terminal gear. Upgrading hooks after prolonged use or once rust starts to appear isn’t just about longevity— it can be the difference between landing fish consistently or walking away frustrated. Decoy’s range of terminal tackle is widely respected for its precision engineering and high-quality Japanese craftsmanship. Thanks to

Bluefish Imports bringing more of their products to Australia, anglers can now access hooks, split rings, jig heads, clips and accesories that were previously hard to find locally. While the range is extensive, we’ve focused on a few key products to see how they perform under real fishing conditions.

The Decoy Jigging Single Seargent N are a prime example. These hooks are forged from high-carbon steel and feature a chemically sharpened long point and a carefully designed micro barb for maximum penetration and secure hook-ups. They are tin coated to prevent corrosion and feature a wide inline eye for easy attachment even on heavy duty split rings. While the name may suggest they are a jigging hook, the inline eye makes them perfect for fitting to trolling and

casting for large pelagics. We used them on Spanish mackerel and bluefin tuna, upgrading from trebles to singles, and the difference was immediately noticeable. Singles simplify hook sets, and allow for cleaner releases, as well as being safer when handling larger fish. They can also greatly improve lure action. Technically, the hook geometry is optimised to hold fast in the corner of the mouth while reducing the risk of the lure spinning out or fish throwing the hook under a strong run. While you may sacrifice a small amount of coverage compared to a treble, the trade-off is a more reliable and controllable strike. The Decoy Single is ultra strong, can withstand heavy drag pressures and is a highly durable hook.

We also retrofitted one of our favourite bream lures, the Evergreen Ultra

The YF33B is a premium forged hook with a sharp chemically honed point, excellent corrosion resistance, and high tensile strength. While these hooks won’t prevent all failures, they offer a noticeable improvement in both reliability and confidence, especially when fishing in harsher saltwater conditions. The fit was perfect for the Ultra Sledge, and the lure’s action remained unchanged, which is critical when dealing with species as wary and line-sensitive as bream.

Decoy’s lure clips and snaps also deserve mention. We’ve long used their W and Egg Snaps across multiple lure types, but recently trialled their Slim Snaps during testing for the Egi Special. The long, slim design allows squid jigs to move naturally, with minimal restriction, while making it quick to swap lures between casts. They’re simple, functional, and wellmade,—it’s the attention to detail and

consistent quality that sets them apart. It’s worth noting that, while Decoy’s terminal tackle is undoubtedly high quality, it comes at a premium. You’re paying for Japanese engineering and materials that generally outperform standard hooks. For serious anglers, particularly those chasing high-value or fast-running species like Spanish mackerel, the difference in hook reliability and strength justifies the investment. For casual anglers, the performance may be less critical, though the upgrade is still worthwhile once hooks show wear or rust.

In conclusion, hooks catch fish, not lures, and Decoy’s range of terminal tackle delivers consistent, reliable performance with high-grade Japanese design and craftsmanship. From jigging singles optimised for secure hook-ups to corrosion-resistant replacements like the YF33B, and well-engineered snaps and clips, their products provide anglers with more control and confidence on the water.

With Bluefish Imports bringing more of their range to Australia, it’s now easier than ever to access these premium hooks. For anglers willing to invest in high-quality terminal tackle, Decoy offers products that combine precision, durability, and practical benefits that make a real difference, especially in challenging saltwater environments.

Thanks to Bluefish Imports, Decoy will soon be launching a brand-new range of bait hooks, marking the first time in the company’s history that hooks specifically designed for Australian anglers will be available. The range will cover circle hooks, octopus hooks, and whiting hooks, offering quality options tailored to our local species and fishing conditions. We’re particularly excited to put these hooks to the test, as Decoy’s reputation for precision craftsmanship and high-quality materials suggests they’ll perform just as well as their other terminal tackle offerings.

The YF3BB is a great treble for all finesse applications.
The range of Decoy terminal tackle is huge and Australian anglers now have greater access to it.

MERIDIAN DEMON

Here in SA we have a seasonal run of school-sized southern bluefin, which are widely targeted through the warmer months. These schools, however, can be fickle at times, with fish widespread, ranging from near-shore reefs to offshore islands and even out to the continental shelf. This means that the average day chasing southern bluefin will see quite a distance covered in an effort to locate some fish.

When a school of feeding fish is located on the surface, our traditional approach is to run a spread of diving hard-body lures at a relatively slow speed around the surface activity. But these fish aren’t always visible on the surface feeding, and this is where skirted lures come into their own.

A spread of skirts can be trolled at greater speeds than that of hard-body lures, hence expanding the distance covered when scouting for fish. Over the past couple of seasons, I’ve been running skirted lures more and more, especially when prospecting grounds where the presence of fish isn’t obvious.

But like all tackle, there is a big variation in the quality and value of skirted lures on the market. Some of the budget skirts lack action and are made on the cheap, and they certainly don’t go the distance. But there are also some high-quality skirted lures on the market, and now in sizes to suit our smaller pelagic species down south.

This past season I was running Meridian skirted lures when trolling for our school bluefin, and with good results. The first model was a Demon #5 in ‘pilchard’ colour. Measuring 180mm (7”) in length, this lure has a cone-shaped resin head which tracks quite straight in the spread.

This skirt comes pre-rigged with a single 7/0 straight-shank non-offset S/S hook, which looked like a Mustad 7691S or a similar pattern. I ran the Demon #5 from the short corner, and I was instantly impressed with the action and bubble trail it offered. While this lure can be trolled up to 14 knots, I kept it between 7–8 knots to align with the optimal speed of other skirts in the spread.

The
#5 in plichard colour was the standout lure through the test period.

The second Meridian lure I was running in the spread was an Ahi #5, which is slightly smaller at 160mm (6”) in length. This resin head is slightly different, consisting of a 10-degree angled face which tapers in diameter through the back half of the head. I would say this is a less traditional head style for our school bluefin. This skirt came pre-rigged as well with a 7/0 hook, and the colour I was using was ‘calamari’, which was brown over orange.

I ran this skirt off the long corner and maintained our trolling speed at 7–8 knots. It is recommended that this skirt be trolled at speeds between 5–9 knots, so its optimal performance was at slower speeds compared to the Demon. Again, the action in the water looked great, although I wasn’t convinced with the brown colour scheme for our school bluefin. I ran both of these lures on 10kg overhead trolling outfits with 60lb wind-on leaders.

As it turned out, the Demon #5 was the standout skirt out of the two Meridian models for our SBTs. The pilchard colour profile of the Demon looked really good and matched the colour of the local bait source on our tuna grounds. I’m not sure if it was the colour scheme, or the action—or a combination of the two—but the Demon would invariably get hit first.

We did have a day on the water where we found some scattered fish around an offshore island, but the tuna were feeding on smaller bait and were refusing the 6” and 7” skirts. The school bluefin in my local area typically range from 8–13kg, so they’re not big fish. Personally, I think the two Meridian skirts I used would be perfect for slightly larger 15–20kg bluefin.

The Demon comes in eight different sizes and in over 30 different colours, so there is plenty of choice to suit a specific size of fish. The Demon offers

a smaller 135mm (approx. 5.5”) model within the range, and I believe this would be a really good size skirt for our run of fish.

Both of the skirts held up well against our school-sized fish and aren’t showing visible signs of wear and tear as yet. Even before use, you can detect the quality of the materials and assembly of these skirts and heads. There is no substitute for quality, and while the initial outlay is more, it’s certainly worth the investment.

Having never used Meridian lures previously, I was impressed with their quality, action and fish-catching ability, especially of the Demon model for our local fish. Next season I’ll run the smaller 135mm model, as I expect that will be an even better match-up for our smaller school tuna.

The heads are beautifully finished with great attention to detail.

The low light performance of the V4 is outstanding.
