Director of Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Column From the desk of Nicholas Johnsen

May is a special month in that we recognize the love, caring and nurturing of our Mothers’, as well as recognize the ultimate sacrifice of our Brothers in Arms on Memorial Day. Both of these holidays come each and every May without fail nor do they sneak up and surprise us. However, life is not always so predictable. Trying to figure out how to get information you need in order to make a decision is often more of a challenge, not because evil people work hard in trying to prevent us from gaining that information, but we often do not know where to start looking. We have a dedicated group of folks that work hard every day trying to assist your “data mining” for information by making our FMWR web site user friendly. The challenge is that individually we search for information differently. You can data mine our web site in several different ways and each will get you to the same destination. I like referring to this as running the maze. You may enter at many different locations and we will push you towards the information you need. We also realize that once you arrive at that point our information may not meet your expectations, and thus we review our source information on a regular basis. However, if you get to the point of giving up in your data mine quest do what my Dad always told me: “Pick up the phone and call a human being!” It is an approach that is still timeless.

ave you ever been sitting around at the barracks by yourself or with your friends bored and trying to find something to do? Most of us single Soldiers would answer yes to this question but we are in luck! There is a program right here on Fort Hood that is always planning and coordinating events and trips to provide all kinds of great opportunities that give back to us in so many ways! Paintball, poker, football, snowboarding, fishing, camping, dominos, comedy shows, ski trips, concerts, laser tag, basketball games, football games, cheerleaders, video games, foreign getaways, bowling, pool parties and so much more. All of these are things the BOSS program can do and most have already been done before thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Fort Hood BOSS reps and many others. Living at the barracks is not always as comfortable as if you were living at home.We all know this. BOSS is here to make your quality of life better! Sometimes things in the barracks don’t work like they’re supposed to. If you’ve tried to fix the problem at your unit level and it’s not working, that’s where we come in.We work with installation command to correct these issues. Submit your quality of life issues to your unit BOSS representatives. We’re here for you! Volunteering is a great way to get really involved in your local community. You have the opportunity to meet all kinds of really great people who go above and beyond the expectations of the Army and give their personal time. There are retirees who really enjoy giving their time to someone who is in need. re you ready to kick off the summer season in a big way? Are you itching to relax on a beach? Are your children already begging to take a dip in the water? The annual Water Festival at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area on June 5 and 6 is your answer. This weekend is a great way to enjoy the summer at the lake where there will be a little something for the water lover in all of us. And who isn’t a water lover in Central Texas? Spanning over 12,300 surface acres, Belton Lake has just what you are looking for. Water and lots of it! There is more than enough water to swim, boat, fish or ski this weekend, not to mention enjoy the festival. Festival activities begin at 10 am Saturday and Sunday, but come early to get your favorite spot in the park to enjoy over eight hours of seemingly unending fun on both days:

ummer vacations: we all live for them, looking forward to the day that we may get away from the daily grind and enjoy time with our Family and friends. Although it is not quite summer, there are still plenty of trips that will allow you to take in the well-earned time off and spend some quality time with the ones that you care for the most, all within 24 hours. Fort Hood’s Information, Ticketing and Registration Office offers thrifty and relaxing trips all summer long, so why not forego driving to the destination and enjoy one of the exciting trips offered? ITR is offering two different trips to two of the more popular theme-park destinations in the state – Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington on June 12 and on June 19 the ITR bus travels down to Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels.

Six Flags over Texas in Arlington was created to merge the intimacy of being a local theme park with the ability to connect communities across our nation by intricately threading a common cause and purpose of letting go and enjoying the experience. With some of the highest coaster landscapes in the world, old-fashioned carousels and live shows, Six Flags is a neighborhood landmark in many communities, and as a system, the largest regional theme park operator in the world. For $60 per person and your government ID take advantage of not having to worry about anything but having fun by registering for this trip at ITR before the May 21 deadline.

8

hoodhappeningsmay2010

Schlitterbahn is an enormous water park with three separate sections. The park provides a free tram so that you can conveniently move from park to park. The original Schlitterbahn has plenty of entertainment to last a complete day. The other two parts of the park, Surfenberg and Blastenhoff, have some of the coolest rides that you’ve ever seen. Register for this phenomenal trip before May 26 and don’t forget the sunscreen! To register for either of these trips, or to check out other fine ITR offerings, travel down to the ITR Office in the Equipment Check Out Center in Bldg. 4930 on Clear Creek Road or next to Military Clothing and Sales behind the AAFES Mini Food Court on 761st Tank Battalion Avenue or call 254-554-6800. ▲

YOU!

What entertainment and activities would you like to see more of from Fort Hood Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation? Fitness Center (62nd Street and Support Avenue, Bldg 23001) on May 22 at 7pm. Rodney’s popularity derives, in large part, from his closeness with his audience by getting them involved in the show. Rodney currently has seven albums out on major labels, several of which still maintain coveted spots on the comedy charts. Two of his albums have achieved gold status. Rodney Carrington will bring his live stand-up comedy show tour to Fort Hood for one night only. Free tickets will be distributed to ID card holders through the unit Command Sergeant Majors; contact your unit for ticket availability starting May 3. Also, on May 18 tickets will be available at the Sportsmen’s Center from 7:30-9:30am, Courses of Clear Creek from 11am-1:30pm and Sprocket Auto Crafts from 4-6pm. The Sportsmen’s Center is located on Rod and Gun Loop, 53rd Street and North Avenue, Bldg 1937. The Courses of Clear Creek are located at Battalion Avenue at Clear Creek Road, Bldg 52381. Sprocket Auto Crafts is located at 20th Street and Old Ironsides Avenue, Bldg 9138. Please note that, due to adult content, this show is intended for patrons 18 and older. How to Throw the Perfect

Summer Party

T

hrowing a summer party doesn’t have to be a challenge. In fact, summer is my favorite entertaining season! I prefer casual summer parties over the stuffy formality of holiday parties any day, although I do love any excuse to have a party! Here are a few tips for throwing the perfect summer party: 1. Keep it simple and casual. No one expects a formal party during the summer so take advantage of that! Plastic or paper dishes are perfectly acceptable this time of year. Leave the formal china in storage and just invest in some cute and functional plastic dishes. At the end of the last summer season I bought some adorable pink, green and blue plastic plates, serving platters and eating utensils on clearance from a big box retailer. I can’t wait to use them this summer! 2. Come up with a theme. No, this does not mean you should have a sailor theme and decorate your

house in anchors and ask your guests to come dressed in nautical attire. This just means that you should keep your menu and décor connected in some way. Just like with fashion, you don’t want your ensemble to be too matchy-matchy but you do want everything to complement each other. It’s the same idea with a party. 3. Make a guest list. Don’t overdo it on the guests! Think about your party location’s capacity first and foremost. There’s nothing worse than attending a party where everyone is cramped in a too-small space, awkwardly having to stand while holding a drink glass and a plate of food and trying not to elbow the person next to them. Also pay attention to the people you are inviting and how they will get along with each other. 4. Plan a menu. Summer is all about outdoor grilling so try to incorporate that if you have one. When planning the menu, be sure you take notice of the cooking

methods of the food. For example, you probably don’t want to make something that is labor intensive and has to be served immediately. As a general rule of thumb, I recommend having at least one menu item that can be made ahead of time, one item that is grilled, one item that is cooked in the oven or stove and one item that maybe doesn’t require any cooking at all. If you’re going to serve an alcoholic drink, remember to have non-alcoholic offerings available as well. 5. Relax and have fun! Nobody likes a stressed out host. If you’ve followed these tips you should be in the clear for a great party, but if something does go wrong don’t let it ruin the whole party. ▲

Reach New W by Kelsey M. West

T

he fear of heights is the second most prevalent fear in America according to most polls. Count me in that population, because my legs begin to wobble even as I ride the escalator at the mall. However, a few months ago I got a wild hair and set out to conquer that fear by picking up a new hobby- rock climbing. My underlying motivation for exploring the sport of rock climbing was to find a fitness activity that was actually fun, and to spend more quality time with my fiancé. When I ventured in to a local climbing facility for the first time I was shaking in my shoes. I watched in awe as people climbed up the rock walls with speed and agility even Spiderman could appreciate. When I finally mustered up the mental strength to climb, I wasn’t exactly a rock star, but with the encouragement of my fiancé I didn’t give up. I’m happy to

16

hoodhappeningsmay2010

report I’ve now been rock climbing a few times a week for the past few months. Rock climbing is a multi-dimensional sport from a fitness perspective. The activity requires strength and flexibility as well as a high degree of endurance and skill. It also offers a balance between physical exercise and mental discipline. Many climbers report a heightened sense of selfconfidence and independence as a result of gaining new skills and successfully completing challenging climbs, or overcoming a fear of heights, falling, etc. I can identify with this feeling. The first couple of times will be physically challenging as your body will be forced into some positions it may never have visited previously. Expect sore forearms, hands, calf muscles and even fingers (it’s a strange feeling!). The more you climb you will begin to develop strength in your arms, back, and core. s

Rock climbing is an excellent sport to participate in to increase your level of fitness. If you have ever thought about giving rock climbing a try, you are in the perfect place to do so. There are many local places to climb- both indoors and out. ◗ ◗ The Wellness Center on post (33rd Street and Old Ironsides Avenue, Bldg 12018) recently opened an indoor climbing wall. This is a great opportunity to try the sport for free! For more information, call 254-287-5586. ◗◗ The West Fort Hood Physical Fitness Center (Clark Road, Bldg 91068) has an indoor climbing wall. For more information, call 254-553-2010. ◗◗ The Equipment Checkout Center has a climbing wall available for rental. This is a great idea for a unit or FRG function! Visit ECOC

on Clear Creek Road, Bldg 4930 or call 254-287-4126. ◗◗ Boulders is a climbing facility in Harker Heights with numerous walls and countless climbing routes for climbers of all skill level and age. They offer classes and guided outdoor climbing tours also. For more information, call 254-690-9790. ◗◗ Central Texas is a great area for outdoor climbing- Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area, Austin’s Green Belt and Enchanted Rock in Fredericksburg are a few popular local destinations for climbers.

Tips

chool is nearly complete and the weather in Central Texas dictates for more time in the great outdoors. What better thing to do than to corral your Family and take them on a camping expedition, creating memories that may last for a lifetime? Not to mention that Fort Hood has Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA) and the Equipment Checkout Center ready and available to help make that camping experience a memorable one. Before you set out on your camping excursion, there are few safety and responsible camping tips that you must consider. 1.Whenever possible, use existing campsites. Camp on durable surfaces and place tents on non-vegetated areas. Do not dig trenches around the tents. BLORA has several tent camp sites already established. BLORA’S tent camping policy authorizes incoming tent campers to occupy and set up a tent camp site from

18

0601-2100 hours. BLORA tent campers need to be set up and in place at least one hour prior to designated quiet hours of 2200-0600 in order to not disturb other tent campers. Campers who arrive during established quiet hours will be offered the opportunity to establish a temporary camp site in an isolated designated camping area until they can relocate to their initial choice the next morning during day light hours.A primitive tent site in the summer season (Apr.- Sept.) costs campers $6/ tent/night, while a tent site with hookups is $10/tent/night. 2. Where possible, camp at least 200-feet away from water, trails or other campsites. Obviously if this is unavoidable, prepare to camp in the most comfortable and safest area of the campground. 3. Observe all fire restrictions. If you must build a fire-use existing fire rings, build a mound fire, or use a

fire pan. Use only fallen timber for campfires. Do not cut standing trees. Clear a 10-foot diameter area around the site by removing any grass, twigs, leaves and extra firewood. Also make sure there aren’t any tree limbs or flammable objects hanging overhead. You have always wanted to camp in a trailer but do not own one? Well, worry no longer because the Equipment Checkout Center (Clear Creek Road, Bldg 4930) has 21 Mallard trailers available for rent. These trailers sleep six, have a shower, tub, microwave, refrigerator, oven, stove, A/C and heat. For more information about what other camping items ECOC has, call 254-287-4126. Finally, for those that would like to camp but stay in a home-like setting, BLORA offers one-bedroom and two bedroom cottages in the park, as well. Teens

The hired Program by Teri Jenkins, Hired Apprentice

H

i Fort Hood teens! I am Teri Jenkins and I am in the Fort Hood Hired Program. Currently, I am working and gaining experience as an apprentice of the SKIESUnlimited Program. Some of my duties include assisting the instructors for the Smart Start Classes and modeling and commercial acting classes. I set up the furniture, help with instruction, answer the phone and play games with the children. Last summer, I worked at the Casey Memorial Library and my experiences there taught me skills that I am now using in my position with SKIESUnlimited. I will be able to write this work experience on my resume when applying for other jobs. The Hired Program is for teens ages 15-18 who are registered with Child, Youth & School Services

and have a 2.0 grade point average or better. Youth have many employment locations on Fort Hood to chose from including Apache Arts & Crafts, Sprocket Auto Body, CYSS and much more! The Hired Program mentors will work with you and your school schedule to create a rewarding work experience that will prepare you for college and beyond. Teens can work two 12 week Hired terms per year. The Hired apprentice is paid a stipend check at the end of the 12 week term. I recommend the Hired Program not only for the money, but also for the beneficial work experience you will gain. Please contact the Workforce Prep Office at 254-287-9658 or check out www.hoodmwr.com for more information including summer program dates! s www.hoodmwr.com

Casey Memorial Library! by Monica Duke

Excitement and fun await those who participate in the summer reading program, “Voyage to Book Island!” In addition to reading great books, members can participate in fun and fantastic programs, including storytelling, arts and crafts and weekly prize drawings. Summer Reading events begin June 9, and continue every Wednesday until July 14. Children 12 and under will meet every Wednesday at 9am in Room 156 of the Library Annex. All children are welcome to attend, as long as they have a parent and/or guardian with them. Fun will be had by all as the children keep up with their reading skills, learn new things and become more interested in libraries and books. Highlighted activities include Survivor Week, Shipwrecked Follies, Something’s Fishy, Patriotic Adventure, a Visit to Pirate Cove and Let’s Luau. Teens will meet every Wednesday at 6pm for crafts and a weekly Survivor Challenge. On July 14, the last day of the Summer Reading Program, both children and teens will be presented with a certificate at the Let’s Luau party. There’s even a reading program for adults! Adults will follow a self paced reading program. Adult reading packets will be available to pick up on June 9 and will include a reading log, bookmark, recipes, puzzles and a reading list. All returned adult reading logs will be entered for a prize drawing. We will have a sign up station set up from May 1-June 9 in the library for early registrations. If you are unable to register during that time, please come to our Wednesday events at 9am for children 12 and under or at 6pm for teens aged 13-18 and we will get you caught up! Call Casey Memorial Library at 254-287-4921 for more information. This year, thanks to funding from the DoD, participating Army Libraries will be offering the same program, “Voyage to Book Island!” s
