Our biggest thanks go to Military Restaurant Holdings - Ft Hood, LLC who signed this agreement to provide this level of name brand casual dining and to our local communities who supported this effort 100 percent as they have supported Fort Hood in the same manner for many years. Hello Clarice, The best place to leave comments or suggestion is the Interactive Customer Evaluation (ICE) system, which is a web-based tool that collects feedback on services provided by various organizations throughout the Department of Defense (DoD). The ICE system allows customers to submit online comment cards to rate the service providers they have encountered at military installations. ICE comments are taken very seriously and are designed to improve customer service by allowing managers to monitor the satisfaction levels of services provided through reports and customer comments. Many Family and MWR facilities have kiosks where you can submit ICE comments or you utilize this amazing resource online at your leisure by visiting http://ice.disa.mil. Dale W. Cowan

here are times when dining at the same old places become tiring and cooking can get quite cumbersome. Well, why not make time to dine at Club Hood and enjoy a delicious menu sure to please the finickiest of eaters… From lunch to brunch to dinner, Club Hood has a yummy alternative for everyone! Lunch is served daily, from 11 am to 1:30 pm and for $7.50 you can enjoy a hot entrée, two sides and a beverage. For those who prefer a lighter lunch, there is unlimited soup and salad for $4.75. Every first and third Tuesday is “Beef and Burgundy with Shrimp Appeal” from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. This all-you-can-eat meal includes a buffet of steamship round, baked potato, fresh salad, shrimp, and two glasses of your choice of wine for $12.95. “Family Night” is every second and fourth Thursday from 5 to 7 pm. The Kid’s Wash is an opportunity for younger children to go through kid’s size sprinkle brushes and foam pads all the while getting drenched from head to toe! P.S. This is fun for parents to watch! Anglers, or fishing enthusiasts will enjoy the chance to watch and gain insight from professional bass fisherman. These professionals will demonstrate how to catch local species of fish in a 40-ft aquarium. Boat rentals are offered at a 25 percent discount throughout the weekend to military ID cardholders

or many people growing up in the 80’s, the idea of roller skating brings back distant memories of disco lights and fog machines, not to mention big hair! But in the more modern times that we enjoy here at Fort Hood, I look at this a bit differently. Roller skating is a fantastic and fun opportunity to burn up to 600 calories an hour! For a new approach to fun and fitness, check out the new and improved Family and MWR Health Promotions Aerobics and Skating Facility (BLDG 324, 37th Street, next to the Shopette). This place has it all with arcade games and concessions area, it’s the perfect place to book a party or just chill out and show off your moves! The Skating Center also has a pro shop with a large selection of everything you need including Quad and in-line skates as well as helmets, knee pads and more! Best of all, skates are sold at wholesale price plus shipping. Special order purchasing is available for items not in stock. Roller skating on Fort Hood is very economical in today’s economy, $5 per session. Sessions run on Fridays from 5 pm - midnight and Saturdays

For a more structured approach to fitness, you don’t have to travel far. Located under the same roof is an amazing offering of Aerobic and Fitness classes! Tone your lower body with Step classes on Monday, Tuesday begins with Cardio kickboxing, Gliding, Hip Hop Funk, Piloga and 20/20/20. Wednesday’s class is Step and Sculpt and Thursday’s class is a Belly Dance Workout that was developed to gain core strength and enhance posture and balance.The week ends with the Saturday Boot Camp, where the instructor chooses a one and a half hour routine made up of hip hop funk, circuit training, gliding and much more. Classes are $25 per month or $3 per class, and for $200 up to 400 skaters can enjoy the facility for a maximum of 3 hours. s the school year comes to a close and cabin fever starts setting in, it is never too early to start planning for that special summer vacation.You know what they say,“Those that snooze, loose.” To make sure that you do not snooze on these ideal summertime getaways, I have gone ahead and highlighted some of the more interesting trips and vacation spots across the great state of Texas. Volente Beach - Everyone loves a great water park and Volente Beach has just the right amount of varying water slides. Located on the shores of Lake Travis, Volente Beach is perfect for hot summer days. A series of pools and kid-sized water features, plus a sandy beach all add up to a great place to cool off. Although there is a restaurant, picnics are permitted, so load up the cooler (no alcohol or glass containers) and plan to spend the entire day! The park is open Saturdays and Sundays from 11 am – 6 pm until mid May and then open daily 10 am – 8 pm, from the end of May through midAugust. Admission to the park is $19.99 for adults (42 inches and taller) and $14.99 for seniors, children and military. In addition to the admission cost, there is a $5 parking fee as well.

South Padre Island – While water parks may be great for water slides and wading pools, it does not offer the natural habitat that good ole, Mother Nature does. Gather up the Family and head down to the popular tourist attraction on southern tip of Padre Island just across Laguna Madre, the bay separating the island from mainland.Visitors find a wide range of accommodations from campgrounds and Family motels to high-rise luxury hotels and condo rentals, marinas and seaside cottages. Restaurants feature fresh seafood harvested daily from the Gulf. South Padre is known for its water sports, including bay, surf, and deep-sea fishing, jet skiing, parasailing, sailing, and windsurfing. Other island activities include bicycling, tennis, shelling, and horseback riding on the beach.The popular Laguna Madre Nature Trail for nature enthusiasts and bird-watchers is north of the city next to the convention center. There’s actually more than 300 picnic sites and 143 covered picnic shelters, and several barbecue grills scattered throughout the park. You can do whatever you like! All BLORA waterfront activities are FREE to park patrons.The summer operating hours are daily from 10 am – 8 pm, but before packing up and heading out to BLORA don’t forget that as of March 1, 2011 there is a new gate fee in effect.There will be a nominal gate fee of $2 per car for authorized DoD patrons who previously had FREE access and $8 per vehicle for all other civilian users, which does not affect the other fee structure currently in place.

ometimes it’s difficult to find activities that are Family-friendly these days. If you want an interesting day that is educational and will get your kids outdoors for a bit, come by and visit the two superb museums on post. With a variety of military hardware on display indoors and out along with a vast collection of historical facts everyone in your Family will come away from the trip, feeling entertained and enlightened. Fort Hood is home to two museums, the 1st Cavalry Museum and the 3rd Armored Cavalry museum. Both are open Monday - Friday 9 am to 4 pm, Saturday 10 am - 4 pm and Sunday 12 - 4 pm. The 1st Cavalry Museum consists of both indoor and outdoor exhibits. The indoor exhibit has displays depicting everything from the American Civil War to the current War on Terror, along with plaques informing visitors of the division’s participation in these

events. Outdoor exhibits consist of Vehicles used throughout the history of the Cavalry to monuments to the great deeds they have accomplished maintaining our freedom. Everything from artillery systems to helicopters are available to view. The 3rd Armored Museum also has a vehicle display park with vehicles of all types. Both the indoor and outdoor exhibits are new as of January 2010 and have a plethora of information on the amazing accomplishments of the United State’s Army 3rd Armored Cavalry Division. Wednesday, May 18th is International Museum Day, so take your Family and celebrate these treasure troves of historical knowledge and experiencing the fun and excitement of learning! ▲

Survivor Outreach Services By Janeth Lopez

urvivor Outreach Services (SOS) is an Army Community Service (ACS) program which provides short and long term support to Surviving Family Members for as long as they need it. Since SOS’s inception in 2009, CampLIFE!, a non-profit organization has sponsored several camping sessions each year, in the central Texas area, which provides free recreational and counseling activities to Families of Fallen Soldiers. SOS and CampLIFE! are hosting a Mother’s Day Celebration at the SOS center located at 10043 Battalion Avenue on Saturday, May 7 from 11 am to 5 pm. Come out and enjoy a full day of fun summer camp activities! Surviving Family Members will be pampered while the kids are entertained! Some of the activities will include a bouncy house, dunking booth, and obstacle course. Units are encouraged to reach out to their Survivor Families to accompany them on this Family Fun Day! Another event scheduled this month is on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30 from 12 to 3 pm. SOS will host a Memorial Day Reception at the SOS center immediately following the ceremony at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen. The center will be open to provide Family Members and guests the opportunity to visit the Hall of Remembrance. Surviving Family Members of our Fallen Soldiers are invited to place a flag on the picture of their loved one. Light refreshments will be served. The next big event is the annual SOS and Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) Seminar and Good Grief Camp. This wonderful healing event is scheduled for July 7-9. 1. Teach the Value of Saving Karyn Hodgens, a veteran teacher, and her husband created a spreadsheet to explain the concept of compounding to their free-spending son.“Something clicked. He said, ‘You mean I’ll earn more money just by letting it sit there?’ He was an instant convert,” Hodgens says. 2. Share the Gift of Giving Susan Beacham, a former investment advisor, gives her teenagers coupons for family outings. Sometimes, the coupons are just for fun, like a major league baseball game. Others may include a lesson, such as a coupon to purchase a purse made by refugee-women-turned-entrepreneurs and an invitation to meet them. 3. Use Technology Tech-savvy kids have plenty of options to learn from virtual money, but it does not replace the real thing. “They need to touch dollars and coins, count them, stack them and learn that they’re concrete things,” says Neale Godfrey, author of “Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees.” 4. Walk the Walk “You may be the greatest money manager in the world, but if you don’t show and tell your children what you’re doing, they can’t learn from you,” Beachem says. 5. Make Allowances Count “An allowance teaches children the natural consequences of money: The only way to get it is to earn it,” Godfrey says. 6. ormally, our articles share the wonderful experiences and quality care that CYSS has to offer for active/retired military Families, Department of Defense civilian employees and Department of Defense contractors. However, after reading these articles about tragedies happening to children as a result of parents finding child care services from want ads, Family friends, next door neighbors and now babysitters hired off of Craigslist, we must speak out. In a time period where technology rules everything around us and the internet is our daily link to the outside world, sites like Craigslist have become a marketplace. Craigslist allows sellers and buyers alike to promote or hunt the next bargain for prices almost too good to be true. The bargains of this internet bazaar extend from collectibles and antiques to jobs and child care services. Unfortunately, many of the prices are too good to be true, and these apparent bargains may come at a price far greater than some bargain hunters are equipped to pay. While Craigslist is arguably one of the largest internet sites in the world, it is run by a staff of no more than 50 people. Having such a small staff to maintain such a sizable business has a direct correlation to their inability to monitor the contents of the website. In fact, there is very little motivation for Craigslist to regulate the subject matter of the advertisements as a Federal law known as Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1998 shields them from legal liability for content created by users. Furthermore, incidents such as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Craigslist Killerâ&#x20AC;?, which was the recent subject of a Lifetime Movie
