“We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.” George Orwell

2 Voices of the Great Place Fort Hood Spotlight

We have had those among us, since the founding of our Nation, those who’s stout hearts and clarity of purpose caused them to don the military uniform of our Armed Forces. History shelves are stocked with accounts of the sacrifice of those individuals and the impact they ultimately made to “Protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” Today their sacrifices do not go unnoticed here at Fort Hood, as we feel their sacrifice and those of their Families, each and every day. We have a myriad of programs and services designed to assist you, so do not feel like you are alone during deployments. Freedom Fest is Fort Hood’s biggest event of the year, with lots of activities for all, including the best fireworks display in Central Texas. This event is a means of sharing the close bonds we have with a ver y suppor tive community and to celebrate our Nation’s birth and continued independence for the last 235 years. Take a look at all of the activities scheduled for the month of July and use this edition of “Hood Happenings” to plan accordingly. Remember, the summer is far from over and you must remain ever vigilant to avoid a safety violation that could ruin the summer, not only for you but for others.

It’s

finally summer time! For kids, this means replacing school clothes with pool clothes, and not having to worry about homework, but about what kind of fun they’ll have. However, for parents it can mean struggling to find responsible supervision as well as worthwhile activities for their children. Luckily, Family and MWR has quite a few programs that not only provide a place for the children to go, but also provide fun and encouraging activities. A concern for some parents might be that their children aren’t learning anything during the summer months, with programs like SKIESunlimited; parents are assured that their kids will be learning in addition to having fun with the informative and exciting classes offered. SKIESunlimited is separated into four distinct schools ranging from Academic Skills to Leadership as well as Health and Fitness. The SKIESunlimited Academy is a fantastic program

6

hoodhappeningsjuly2011

to enrich the experiences of the military child. The program is available to all dependents of military, retirees, and Department of Defense civilians. Some of the courses require a minimal fee for attendance. More information on these programs can be found at www.hoodmwr.com/ skiesunlimited.htm or in the latest edition of CYSS Sensations magazine. Another educational and fun program for kids is “the edge” program. It provides fundamental life skills and cultural education. For kids in 1-5 grades, the price is $20 for a program that meets once a week and $40 for twice a week program. For 6th grade through seniors in high school it is free! If you’re looking for more athletic activities Youth Sports and Fitness provides wrestling throughout the year and baseball during these summer months. Baseball is open to kindergarten through 9th grade for a nominal $40 fee.

Knock, knock! Who’s there? Summer Summer who? Summer kids and some are parents For more information on these sports, contact the Youth Sports and Fitness Office at 254-288-3770 or stop by Bronco Youth Center, located at Tank Destroyer Boulevard, between 27th and 31st Streets. One more staple, of the summer months, is Family vacations or reunions. Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area provides many diverse activities for the whole Family and for reasonable prices can be enjoyed all summer long. Enjoy the Phantom Plume Slides or a relaxing swim at Sierra Beach, the recreational area of the lake will be open 7 days a week including holidays from 10 am – 8 pm. If you get tired of both of the 300-foot slides or the swim area you can retire the Family to one of 300 picnic sites, 143 of which are covered, in case of inclement weather. If your Family is still wanting more, check

out one of the camping sites. RV and Tent areas are available consisting of both partial and full hookups, making it an enjoyable outdoor experience for those who like to rough it with the basics and those who enjoy all the amenities. Horseback riding is also available at BLORA and is open to ages 12 and up. For kids 11 years of age and under pony rides are provided for $5 per 20 minute session. Overnight trail rides are available by reservation. For more information on the trail rides or prices, call 254-287-2523. Last and arguably the most popular activity of summer, are the outdoor pools on post. Fort Hood has five outdoor pools open for recreational use. The pools are open from 12 - 8 pm; two of the larger pools have both diving boards and slides, as well as lounge areas for anyone who would like to just luxuriate in the sun. For more information on pools, prices, rules, or party reservations, please contact the Aquatics Office at 254-287-9430. Parents have plenty of options to just kid around with their kids this summer. So whether your keeping your mind sharp with courses from SKIESunlimited or the edge or cutting loose at the lake or pool just remember, stay safe and enjoy the SUN! s www.hoodmwr.com

Health

by Monty Campbell

R

ound and round it goes and where it stops, nobody knows. These are often the lyrics about a romance and the love of a couple, but with summer in full swing, Soldiers and Families around Fort Hood have a new idea of what that song could really be about – fitness and the proper nutrition needed for a healthy and mentally strong body. The world around us continues to spin and hopefully your world has not been spinning due to the food that you put into your body. Most everyone craves that perfect body type and midway through the summer, most people have transformed their bodies. To help you maintain that not only aesthetically pleasing body, but also healthy body, there are several steps for you to take. The first and foremost idea to remember is that it is important to eat at regular intervals, ideally every three - five hours. This helps to keep blood sugar levels stable. Skipping meals or reducing your calorie intake does not help control weight in the long term.

14

hoodhappeningsjuly2011

Unfortunately, many people have received the notion that in order to achieve and maintain their weight loss, they must simply stop eating some meals. Not only could this notion be further from the truth, but it also breaks the body down and can make it extremely weak. Eat your meals! Another extremely vital theory about proper nutrition is the need to drink plenty of water. Although more and more Soldiers and their Families are drinking larger quantities of water annually, most of us do not drink enough water. Everyone should aim to drink about six to eight glasses of water to maintain a healthy lifestyle. An ugly and concerning effect of not drinking enough water is dehydration. Common symptoms of dehydration include dizziness, lack of concentration, irritability and headaches. Drink that water! Finally, there is a common misconception from those that are looking to tone their bodies or lose some extra weight and that is to limit the amount of

carbohydrates that you eat. The normal carbohydrate intake should be about 60 percent of your daily caloric total. Bread, potatoes and pasta are all loaded with carbohydrates but when eaten by themselves, these foods do not make you fat. These foods only start adding the pounds onto your body when you add cheese, butter or rich creamy sauces to them. These and many more health promotion can be learned about at the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness Training Facility (31st Street & Battalion Avenue, Bldg. 12019). Topics in health promotion, behavioral change, nutrition, and tobacco cessation can be tailored to your group. Examples of previous classes are: Female Soldier Health; Family-Style Nutrition; Soldier Nutrition for the Field; Motivation for Healthy Changes; Weigh to Live Lite (one-hour overview); Preventing Tobacco Use; and Nutrition for Healing and Weight Management. Shake it Up!

ZUMBATHON

by Jade Coleman

O

nce upon a time, a man named Beto was scheduled to teach an aerobics class and arrived to the scene somewhat unprepared. As he stood there in front of a room full of enthusiastic pupils anxious to exercise, he realized that he had forgotten to bring his aerobics music. Thinking quickly, he remembered that he had a few tapes in his backpack that were not standard aerobics music. The tapes he pulled out of his backpack were comprised of music that he personally enjoyed listening to; traditional Latin, Salsa and Meringue music. Beto could workout and groove to such music all day if it were he alone, but he wasn’t sure if those in his class could. Faced with the challenge at hand, he put his improvisational skills to the test. Beto had no other option, but to teach the aerobics class using non-traditional aerobics music. It was in that fateful moment during the mid-90’s, a revolutionary new concept in fitness was born – the Zumba Fitness-Party™! The class soon became the most popular class at his fitness facility and has grown exponentially in the last decade. Zumba is a fitness program inspired by Latin dance and is also a Spanish slang word that means “to move fast and have fun”. That’s right - move fast and have fun is exactly what we are going to do at the Zumbathon. Your experience will be nothing less than exhilarating as we shake and sweat off calories for two hours. The Zumba workout infuses various dance moves from Salsa, Meringue, Hip-Hop, Country, Belly Dance and more. There will be upwards of eight certified Zumba instructors to keep you pumped up! The Zumbathon is on Saturday, July 16 from 9 – 11 am at Abrams Physical Fitness Center, located at 62nd Street & Support Avenue, Bldg 23001. The event is FREE and open to all, ages five and up, active duty or not. The first 100 to arrive at the Zumbathon will win a free Zumba t-shirt. Free healthy snacks will also be provided and lots of cool giveaways. For more information, call 254-2855459 or visit www.hoodmwr.com. ▲

Time to Act

A

rmy Family Action Plan (AFAP)…It’s how we’re changing the way the Army lives! Army Family Action Plan is a Department of the Army program that has been around for 27 years. It’s a process that gives visibility to issues concerning the quality of Army life and it gives us, (Soldiers, retirees, DoD civilians, and their Family members) the opportunity to suggest ways to resolve these issues. Since the inception of AFAP, we have experienced immense changes that have improved the quality of Army life. Things such as higher education institutions being prohibited from charging out-of-state tuition to Armed Forces members and dependants stationed in a state other than their home of record, TRICARE Prime co-payments have been eliminated, stabilization for Soldiers with graduating high school seniors were implemented, online academic tutoring for school age children, the Program for Pregnant and Postpartum Female Soldiers and the Federal Thrift Savings Plan were established, in addition to many other changes. All of the aforementioned are changes through AFAP. There have been 195 improved programs and services, 176 Army policy and regulatory changes and 124 legislative changes. The Army continues to change to meet the ever changing challenges and demands of our nation. We have this powerful tool to provide our personal input. If you have any issues, concerns or ideas on improving the quality of Army life, then utilize AFAP. It works! Suggestions for areas of improvements are being accepted now through September 30 and from there will to be reviewed at the Fort Hood Annual AFAP conference on October 25-28. Issues can be submitted to any AFAP Issue box, (located at various locations on Post - Rivers Bldg, Oveta Culp Hobby, Casey Memorial Library, and The Exchange…call for complete listing), or online at www.myArmyonesource.com (click Family Programs and Services, then Army Family Action Plan Issue Management). ▲

Camp Care A Lot

S

by Stephania Williams

ummer camp can be fun and exciting for all children. However, children with special needs normally start out going to day camps, which are usually close to home. As they get older, they may want to go to an overnight camp. Is your child ready for camp? How can you tell? Camp is a safe place for children to learn to solve problems and learn self-sufficiency. Camps also help to build relationships with peers. How long has your child spent away from home? Children who have spent time away from home with friends or family shouldn’t have any problems going to camp. There are day and overnight camp sessions that range in length from one day to eight weeks. You can choose a day camp or a shorter camp session for a child who is new to camping. Children are the best evaluator of when they are ready for camp. If children bring up the subject of going to camp, then it’s a good sign they are up for the challenge. If they mention they’d like to stay overnight, it’s a safe bet they’re up for an overnight camp. Does your child have a friend? Do they attend camp? Being able to spend time with friends they’re familiar with will also help your child be ready for camp. They’ll want to be courageous in front of their friends. Having people they’re familiar and comfortable with

22

hoodhappeningsjuly2011

may make staying at camp easier. However, after their first camp experience, they may be willing and eager to try an overnight camp. Doctors recommend telling your children it’s alright if they feel homesick when attending camp, especially overnight camps for the first time. It is perfectly normal for children to think about home, wonder what’s going on without them and missing their Family. When children become involved in activities throughout the day, they’ll be too busy to be homesick for long. When it comes to knowing if your child is ready for camp, there are no hard and fast rules. Each child is an individual. A five year old, who has spent the night with grandparents quite often, might be able to attend a camp for a week with no problem. The same isn’t necessarily the case for a 12 year old who hasn’t been away from their parents. Talk to your child about going away to summer camp and see how they react. In order to attend Camp Care A Lot or to find out more information about camps, please send an email message to Hood.DMWR.ACS.EFMP. Distro@conus.army.mil. s

The climbing wall was one route special needs children used to ascend a 70-foot tower from which they descended attached to a safety harness and rope dangling from a 400-foot long zip line.

Jordan Taylor swings from a rope attached to a telephone post after being hoisted into the air by Peaceable Kingdom staff members.

Each year, the Exceptional Family Member Program and the Children’s Special Needs Network provide a summer day camp called “Camp Care A Lot” for children ages five through 21 at Peaceable Kingdom Retreat.

uring the hot summer days, the Exchange wants our valued customers to know that we offer unique and cost effective ways to stretch the Family budget. A recent Market Basket Survey, conducted in October 2010, in an independent study, showed that troops save an average of 24 percent when exercising their Exchange benefit. The results indicate the Exchange’s ongoing commitment to offer the best prices for our authorized shoppers. If shoppers do encounter a lower price, the Exchange has the “We Match Prices” program to ensure our authorized shoppers get the most value for their money this summer season and throughout the year. The Exchange “We Match Prices” program matches local competitor’s current price on any item normally stocked. The item challenged must be identical and be of the same brand, manufacturer and model number. For clothing, the item must be of the same color, size, style, and brand. This applies whether the competition has the item in stock or not. Local competitors are defined as retailers conducting business in the local community, usually within 50 miles, including warehouse clubs, but excluding close-out stores or the Commissary. We even match pricing on

24

hoodhappeningsjuly2011

identical items found in the Exchange catalog or www.shopmyexchange.com, with the exception of the following categories: fine jewelry, collectible gift-ware, crystal, closeouts, special orders, and Exchange Online Mall items. We also offer a 14 day price guarantee on any item originally purchased at the Exchange, and subsequently sold at a lower price by the Exchange or any other local competitor. Your original receipt is required for the price guarantee adjustment. Complete details concerning the Exchange’s price matching policy are available online at http://www.shopmyexchange.com/customerservice/ pricematch.htm

Another way the Exchange helps customers save responsibly is through the Military Star card. This card was developed exclusively to support our nation’s active duty military, reservists and military retirees for all purchases, ranging from everyday items to luxury items. The Military Star card features one of the lowest interest rates of any major retail credit card, no annual or late fees, 10 percent off everything the first day you shop, and fuel discounts. Currently our customers save five cents off every gallon of gas purchased. Shop your Exchange where you save and we give back! s
