We can start to see the light at the end of the tunnel as this month rolls around knowing that by the end of October we should be enjoying a fantastic fall-I am willing to go out on the limb given that I am writing this at the end of JUN. I know that as I have grown more mature (read that as older) I now see the days on a calendar pass by more swiftly. Yet some old memories are hard to depress. As a young boy I hated seeing SEP come around as it meant a return to school, and frankly I had a blast as a kid during the summer playing with my mates in the local creek. Labor Day marked the official return to school and taunted us with memories of the gone by past summer with a short reprieve from school. My memory is now condensed as it seems as if we just had this holiday a few months ago which seems like a few days ago. I checked my watch against the US Naval Observatory and it is not running at light speed so I know that perhaps it is just me. Please enjoy the Labor Day weekend, but while doing so be safe. I am not going to go through a safety check list, but would ask you to simply ask yourself one question no matter what activity you are going to conduct: “Can someone get hurt here?” If the answer is a maybe then figure out how to mitigate that risk so no one gets hurt. SEP also brings the installation Combined Federal Campaign into full swing. You have always been a very giving group and would simply ask that you do what you can as every bit makes a difference. Enjoy this copy of “Hood Happenings” and go try an activity you have never attemptedyou might find it to be your passion!

Recently renovated and with an event space capable of accommodating a theaterstyle event of slightly more than 475 persons. The event space can also be divided to accommodate smaller parties or multi-room events. easons change as they always have, but here at “The Great Place”, Fall not only brings about a change in the color of leaves, but one of Texas’s greatest sporting events- Bow Hunting! Fort Hood has over 190,000 acres of land set aside for hunting, open to anyone with a state hunting license and a Fort Hood hunting permit. Fort Hood wild game includes: whitetail deer, turkey, quail, dove, duck and like game, feral hog, rabbit and squirrel. Texas Bow Hunting season is held throughout October, but before the season begins, every archer must prepare their bows and sharpen their aim…Fort Hood offers an opportunity to do just that! The Sportsmen’s Center Archery Range is located at the end of 53rd

Street and is open during daylight hours on Saturdays and Sundays. The range is free, but does require archers complete the $3 registration course, prior to using the facility. The certification is valid for one year after the date issued. Archers must check in at the Sportsmen’s Center before heading down to the range, where archery lanes are standing targets. For more information, call the Sportsmen’s Center at 254-532-4552. Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area also offers archers an opportunity to work on their shots. BLORA is located on North Nolan Road, approximately 10 miles from East Range Road. Access to the park is also possible from FM 439 and Sparta Road. Archers check in at the BLORA Reservation Office to pay the
required $3 fee, sign the required Hold Harmless Agreement and pick up the Archery Range map before proceeding to the range. The 3D Archery Range is located at the base of Liberty Hill Road past the Paint Ball Course. Archers must bring their own bows and archers under the age of 16 years old require adult supervision. The 3D archery range is a walk-through range, which has 32 shooting stations located throughout the scenic terrain of BLORA. After completing the range, archers must clear the range in person, back at the BLORA Registration Office or by calling 254-287-2523. All you have to do is follow the arrow to either of Fort Hood’s archery ranges this season. Good luck and good hunting! s

sk any outdoors person, and they will tell you “It’s in my blood,meaning, to them their love of the outdoors seems somewhat innate…almost as if they were born to be in the wilderness. There is just something about being outdoors and in the wilderness that just seems like a birthright and reminiscent of life back on the wild American Frontier…and it’s no wonder why hunting and fishing are two of this nation’s most wildly loved past times. Here at “The Great Place”, each September we celebrate Fort Hood Hunting and Fishing Day. The festivities will commence on September 17, and not only celebrate hunting and fishing sports, but encourage the importance and preservation of the environments in which these activities take place.This national celebration has been championed by many notables.Most prominently, President Obama whom has established a wildlife hunting and heritage council of sportsmen and women who are

dedicated to preserving the lands, lakes, and streams of our nation. Now, more than ever, it is prudent that we fight to preserve our lands. Goings-on such as Fort Hood Hunting and Fishing Day are crucial to bringing attention to the wonderful activities that can be conducted right here, on Fort Hood, our own back yard.This day isn’t only for experienced outdoors persons, but provides a great introductory opportunity for the less experienced. In celebration of Fort Hood Hunting and Fishing Day on September 17, Family and MWR’s Sportsmen’s Center Complex will provide a host of activities. The activities are designed for all authorized Family and MWR patrons, from mild to wild, everyone is welcome. The festivities begin at 6:30 am and will go on until a little after 3 pm. Prepare to embark on a journey to trips on travel… A crucial tip for trips is to always plan ahead. Planning ahead allows you the time to make sure you are receiving the best deals and allows you the option of arranging a payment plan. Another travel tip is to outline a “Vacation Budget”, by tallying the cost of accommodations plus the potential cost of transportation, dining, entertainment and incidentals. Next, compose a list of the top destinations that you would like to visit and several different dates that you would like to vacation. After which, research your chosen destination weather and climate for that particular season and which local activities will be offered during your stay. If you are vacationing with children, check which hotels or resorts are kid-friendly; if “Rufus”, the Family pet is tagging along, check to see if accommodations are made for pets as well (there may be a pet fee). ingo is a simple, fun and inexpensive game with heightened player-winning probability, therefore captivates millions. Despite Bingo’s appeal, many people are not aware of the rich history of the game which has become a favorite American pastime. The earliest known form of Bingo was played in Italy in 1530 and called “Lo Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia”. In modern times, Bingo was first played in the U.S. at a carnival in Atlanta, GA in 1929. The game was originally referred to as “Beano”, but that changed after one very animated New Yorker mistakenly exclaimed “BINGO!” to bring attention to himself as he won. Soon after, the game spread across the nation like wildfire…and the rest is, as they say “History”. The Bingo phenomenon has become so well-liked, that it is often used as an educational tool, to unite the excitement of the game with learning basic principles on various subjects. Another interesting fact about Bingo is that there are
over 1.4 million possible Bingo card combinations. However, don’t let that large number deter you, because 96 percent of all Bingo players have won at least once. A popular fitness class is Zumba, which involves working your body in spiced up exotic rhythmic movements set to high-energy Latin and International beats. This hour long aerobic dance exercise incorporates all different types of moves and music; such as Marimba, Cumbia, Middle Eastern, Salsa and Meringue.
Perhaps you’d rather put the pedal to the metal? Get into the ‘spin’ of things with a spin class. Spinning doesn’t involve a lot of coordination and is tailored to challenge and push you. If you have trouble motivating yourself to take your body to the next level or you’re a cyclist that wants to stay in shape during the off-season; spinning classes are a great alternative. If you’re looking to find your “Chi”, balance or just get focused; try the Tai Chi Qi Gong classes. Tai Chi is a system of movements and positions believed to have developed in 12th Century China. Tai Chi techniques aim to address the body and mind as an interconnected system and are traditionally believed to have mental and physical health benefits to improve posture, balance, flexibility, and strength. ho says the third time is a charm? Here at “The Great Place”, we like to do things that are phenomenal and that includes holding events for several consecutive years.That is exactly what Fort Hood’s Family and MWR has decided to do with the Great Place Amazing Sprint Triathlon! Come out and race against time in the Fourth Annual Great Place Amazing Race Sprint Triathlon, September 24. A triathlon isn’t only for the most athletic competitors…this triathlon will incorporate both traditional triathletes and those who would like to come out and try a different fitness effort. Triathlon races vary in distance; according to the International Triathlon Union, and USA Triathlon, the main international race distances are sprint distance (750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run), Intermediate (or Standard) distance, commonly referred to as “Olympic distance” (1.5 km swim, 40 km ride, 10 km run), the Long Course (1.9 km swim, 90 km ride, 21.1 km run, such as the Half Ironman), and Ultra Distance (3.8 km swim,

180 km ride and a marathon: 42.2 km run); the most recognized branded Ultra Distance is the Ironman triathlon. This triathlon is a sprint triathlon, which means that it is quite a bit shorter than the traditional triathlon. It features a brisk swim, healthy bike ride and finally, a challenging run to the finish line. Each event is challenging and is a true test of fitness, endurance and strength. This triathlon will take place at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area.With a race start time of 8 am, participants will start the first leg of the race by swimming 300 meters in Belton Lake. Upon completion of the swim, racers will immediately start the second leg which is a 12-mile bike ride through the surrounding park. For the third and final leg of the race, participants will park their bikes and finish the race on foot with a 3-mile run to the finish line. merican Gold Star Mothers (AGSM) was incorporated in 1929, a federal charter from the U.S. Congress. The initiative to establish this phenomenal group started during the World War I era. Families would hang gold stars in their windows to honor a child killed in military services to the nation. Ten years after the war, twenty-five Mothers met in Washington, D. C. to establish the American Gold Star Mothers to support grieving Mothers and Families and also to provide services to wounded Soldiers. On June 23, 1936, a joint congressional resolution designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother’s Day, a holiday that has been observed each year by a presidential proclamation. On September 25, President Obama will be requested to issue a proclamation. It calls on United States Government officials and the people of the United States to display the flag of the United States on all

Government buildings and homes. It also encourages the American people to display the flag and hold appropriate ceremonies as a public expression of our Nation’s sympathy, support, and respect for our Gold Star Mothers and Families. Fort Hood Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) Center has nearly 280 Gold Star Mothers in the area. When we think of our Fallen Heroes and the Mothers mourning their loss, finding words to express our sorrow can be extremely difficult, if not impossible. Though words may be hard to find, there is something we all can do on this very important day of observance. On September 26, you can honor the mothers of our Fallen Heroes by displaying a Gold Star Luminary. The luminaries are an eye-catching way to show your support and Light Up the Lives of Gold Star Mothers everywhere. They are very simple to make with just a few inexpensive items.
To make your luminaries, you will need:
• Battery operated tea candles • White paper bags, lunch-sized • Small scissors or star-shaped paper punch • 6-8 ounces of sand • Star pattern (see exhibit 1) 20

Instructions: exhibit 1 Unfold the bags. Fold the top 1/2 to 1-inch of the bag down over itself. Then fold it again. This will stabilize the bag. Trace about a 2-inch five-point star on the bag, near the top, just under the fold you made above. Cut the star out on one side of the bag only. Keep the cut-out near the top. Fill the bag with 1 inch of sand, approximately 1 cup. It keeps the luminary from blowing over. Just before nightfall place the lit battery operated tea candle in sand-filled bag at the end of your driveway. The more luminaries you make, the more breath-taking it will be. re you a parent concerned about your child’s education and ensuring a smooth transition for each PCS? Then go to the SLOs! Your Fort Hood School Liaison Officers (SLOs) work in conjunction with Child, Youth, and School Services, the local school communities and SLOs around the world to address educational issues involving military children. The SLOs act as a communication link between the installation, the surrounding school districts, and parents. They provide information on the educational process and assist parents in maneuvering through local school systems. While SLOs are not advocates, they are here to inform and link military Families to the individual, group, or other resource that can hopefully address and resolve the issue. They also provide necessary tools to empower parents to advocate for their children’s education. Your Fort Hood SLOs also conduct the quarterly School Transition Response Team (STRT) meetings.

The STRT provides a forum for stakeholders in military children’s education to address concerns and issues to ensure seamless transitions and the best academic opportunities. The SLOs are the Army’s designated “point person,” responsible for serving as the liaison between Families, local school districts and various other community partners in education to promote quality education and academic support for military children and youth. by Cathy Orona he Exchange mission is to be our customer’s first choice. One way we do this is to provide a SUPER credit program in the form of the Exchange Credit Program. The ECP for short, or Military Star as it is more commonly known was developed in response to customer and commander complaints concerning a growing number of rent-to own, pay advance and other unacceptable high-interest rate scams targeted toward military personnel.
