DECEMBER

Calendar

Dear Reader:

What is at the top of your wish list? What do you want Santa to bring to you? Share a short story about what is at the top of your wish list this year. What we would like from Santa would have to be a great fun vacation for my Family. And since my husband is deployed we could really use a break to let loose and just have fun. Having him home would be great but he can’t for a few more months so we would ask Santa for a vacation to Greatwolf for me and my boy! Cynthia Bland

What I would like Santa to bring me for Christmas is the chance to go on a honeymoon with my husband. He just returned from being deployed in Iraq and we recently got married in April when he was home on leave. We have yet had the time or the money to really take a honey moon. That is my wish this year. Debbie Solinger

The one thing I could honestly say I wish we could get is a new van.We have one vehicle between my husband and I and 3 children, with one in school. It is crazy hectic having to be up every morning at 4 with my husband getting him to work, coming home getting my son ready and him to school, back home, back to school, back home then back to my husband’s work, and then home. And this is daily.... I am tired but I do it because I have to. If we could honestly afford a new car we would. Ours barely fits the 5 of us, and lord help me if I must bring home groceries, because there is no room. Maybe one day “Santa” will grant our Christmas wish. Malisa M. Phillips

If I had to think of one thing I had to put on the top of my Christmas list from Santa it would be for my kids to have new bedroom furniture. They have always had used furniture and we can’t afford to get them new stuff. It would be amazing for them to have it. I love my kid’s they are my life and they deserve the very best. That’s what I would ask Santa for. Jodie Thompson

Arts&Crafts

Getting Crafty with by Shelly Damo

re you the type to keep small mementos, souvenirs, or pictures after an important event? It’s easy to forget about those small knick-knacks after they’re stored away and even easier for them to turn into unwanted clutter in your home. A great solution to keep your memories handy and presentable is scrapbooking! Scrapbooking does not have to be a difficult process. The hard part is actually getting started, so try to set aside a nice chunk of time where you are able to sort through everything and get your creative juices flowing! Make sure you have all the necessary tools handy: a nice, blank-paged book, scissors, colorful pens, markers, glue, stickers, pictures, or whatever else you may want to include. The next step is figuring out how to group the memorabilia and laying out your design. From various ticket stubs to scattered goofy pictures, it may feel overwhelming to decide how to group everything. It may be helpful to look for inspiration from the internet, magazines, or books. As soon as you get past that hump, figuring out how to complete the rest of the scrapbook becomes a breeze!

4

hoodhappeningsdecember2010

If you are still skeptical on how to scrapbook or if you need more guidance, have no fear! Fort Hood’s very own Apache Arts and Crafts hosts a scrapbooking class every fourth Saturday of the month. For $10 per person, you can bring all of your scrapbooking tools and memorabilia to Apache Arts and Crafts and have an instructor help you with all of your scrapbooking needs. Or check out one of the new Club Q classes where all you bring is your photos and you get a full kit to scrapbook a special theme each month. These classes are held the third Wednesday of the month and costs $20. Apache Arts and Crafts also offers other great services for those bit by the crafting bug. Apache Arts and Crafts is located on 761st Tank Battalion and 62nd Street, Bldg 2337. To sign up or for any more information on any of the classes, call 254-287-0343. s

ake decorating has become the new scrapbooking. With the times changing, the trend of how a cake is being decorated has also been changing. These days cakes are becoming works of art.To create a professional tasting cake, pick a delicious filling that compliments your cake flavor. Then lay your filling between your cake layers whether it be fruit, jam or a chocolate ganache. In this new age, get on the internet and find a wonderful tasting buttercream frosting recipe and tint it with unique colors of your choice. Or you can attempt to be a “CAKE BOSS” and master the art of fondant. Once you have your cake frosted with the color of your choice, it’s time to have fun decorat-

by Tina Wilgeroth ing and personalizing it using a frosting bag fitted with different tips or even with 3D figures. The ideas are endless, let your imagination soar! Don’t be intimidated and run to the store to buy a cake, ice it with store bought frosting and put on a few candles, then call it complete. If you need ideas to get you motivated, search the internet for cake images that inspire you or if you still need more guidance, try one of the new Cake Decorating with Cricut classes offered at Apache Arts and Crafts. Classes start up in January so call 254-287-0343 for more information. At your next gathering, show up with one of your amazing creations and your friends will be totally impressed! s

Enchanted W

ith all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season sometimes it’s great just to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.Well, there’s no better place in Central Texas to do that than our own Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area. The Fourteenth Annual Nature in Lights will overwhelm you with warmth and delight.Around every corner of the over five mile journey, there is magic to catch your eye and fill your heart with holiday spirit. Every year an abundance of traditional light displays are combined with some new surprises to set the tone of this memorable celebration. Over one hundred displays adorn the already spectacular lakeside landscape and the winding pathways that make their way across BLORA. Meanwhile this whole experience is made even more enchanting by tuning in to the Holiday music that is choreographed to bring each scene brilliantly to life. Two of the best loved illuminated attractions are the 300-foot long nativity scene and the 500-foot long

awe-inspiring drive through the “Tunnel of Lights.” Local businesses sponsor many of these light displays and they are carefully put together one by one and each bulb is checked and placed to ensure that your time at BLORA is merry and bright. Another Enchanting and fun part of Nature in Lights is Santa’s Village. Located along the route at the Live Oak Pavilion, visitors can indulge their sweet tooth with fresh homemade cookies and hot chocolate filled with comfort in every sip on these chilly Texas nights. The night wouldn’t be complete without a stroll through the charming shopping area where you can find holiday craft vendors and other happy holiday makers. Santa Clause himself awaits your arrival for that traditional holiday photo, the perfect keepsake to preserve your memory. Santa’s Village runs Friday through Sunday Nov. 19 - 21 and Nov. 26 - Dec. 12. Then nightly Dec. 16 – 24 and open on Thanksgiving. Nature in Lights is proudly hosted by Fort Hood’s

Evening by Johanna Rosson Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. It is recommended to come and see the magic early in the season, early in the week and early in the evening to find a shorter line at the gate. Nature in Lights is open from November 19 to January 2 from 5:30 pm to 11 pm. Visitors can receive the 3rd edition collectible Nature in Lights Ornament, Monday through Wednesday. The ornaments will be available while supplies last. Nature in Lights is carefully designed not only to recapture the magic of the holiday season but it’s a sure bet to brighten the lives of friends and Family, both young and young at heart. Gate fees range from $5 per personal vehicle to $40 for a 47 passenger van or larger bus. Make your plans this year to experience the majesty of “Nature in Lights” whether it’s your first visit or your 14th pilgrimage, be prepared to be dazzled by Central Texas’ largest holiday light display and an evening you will never forget. s

More than just handing out food

A

s the holidays draw closer, dining facilities (DFAC) and unit leadership start planning for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. For the DFACs, it is a time to show off, not only their culinary skills, but their decorating skills as well. For the unit leadership, it is a time to show their appreciation to the Soldiers. Serving Soldiers dinner is not only a humbling experience, but it also shows the Soldiers that their leadership truly cares for them and appreciates their service. Taking a few hours out of a holiday to serve dinner is not only a sign of support, but it also shows the Soldier that they are part of a much larger Family - the Army Family. Soldiers always enjoy that day, seeing their leadership all dressed up, standing behind the long line of delicious food, with much anticipation to receive that plate from their 1SG, CSM, Company CDR or BN CDR. As each Soldier comes through the line, they are greeted with a smile and a “Happy Holiday. It is a very gratifying experience and

has been a staple in the long history of our Army. For me serving dinner to the Soldiers has become a whole Family event. Every year that I am not deployed, my wife and sons accompany me to the DFAC on Thanksgiving Day. Once my time at the serving line is done, we all enjoy sitting down with the Soldiers for a great meal and some non-work conversation. In the past as a squad leader, I would have Soldiers over to the house, but now as a First Sergeant my house is just not big enough. Serving a holiday dinner at the DFAC provides the time and location for leaders to sit down and truly get to know their Soldiers. The DFAC provides the food and atmosphere, but the true bond between Soldiers and their leadership is developed over a meal and good Family conversation. Every year, I look forward to the event and hope that the future leaders receiving the meal service will step up to the line proudly later in their career, and carry on this great Army tradition. s

e have all seen it, heard about it, been there or wanted to be there. No, I am not talking about the men on the moon. I am clearly talking about one of the most fascinating entertainment opportunities known to mankind World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) action. Who doesn’t want to see John Cena, Randy Orton or The Miz as an early gift, during the holiday season? If those names don’t get you excited then maybe the names Triple H, Mark Henry and Ray Mysterio will make you want to lay the smack down on someone that doesn’t provide that entertainment! Well, don’t fret as Fort Hood’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation will unwrap that early holiday gift for you in the form of the World Wrestling Entertainment’s “Tribute to the Troops”, December 11 from 1- 3 pm at Sadowski Field. Gates open at 11:30 am. All of the aforementioned WWE stars will be appearing as well as many others, to include The Edge, WWE Chairman

and CEO Mr. Vince McMahon, Eve, the Bella Twins and many others. The best part of this “gift” is that it is FREE and open to the public. Soldiers show your Fort Hood pride as you wear your uniform and Families wear their Hooah Gear for special access to up-close standing areas at Fort Hood’s nationally televised event. World Wrestling Entertainment, in conjunction with NBC, will honor the United States Armed Forces with its third annual telecast of its holiday special, “WWE Tribute to the Troops.” This year, top WWE Superstars and Divas will travel to Fort Hood,Texas to brighten the lives of service men and women, their Families, and the entire Fort Hood community. The hour-long special will air Saturday, December 18 (7-8 pm) on NBC. This trip marks the eighth consecutive year that WWE will bring its one of a kind entertainment to our service men and women of the military to thank them for their com-

In the grand tradition of Bob Hope, this year’s show will feature appearances by The View’s Sherri Shepherd, Miss USA Rima Fakih, Cedric the Entertainer and a performance by a musical guest. America’s Got Talent alumnus, Jackie Evancho, who recently released her first CD “O Holy Night,” will honor America by signing the National Anthem. massages as gifts to others, be a Scrooge and keep them for yourself, or share with; that loved one, co-worker, and yourself! Now that’s the spirit! This year when it’s time for New Year’s resolutions, make a promise for a kinder, gentler side to your personal improvement plan. The Retreat can help. Be a regular and earn a free massage; after five purchased massages, your sixth one is free. Ask for your Massage Club Card at your next visit. Parents with spouses deployed, don’t forget to use your free 2 hours weekly at KIDS ON SITE, for a class and a massage. Everybody feels better after a massage, even those that didn’t get one, but stand in your glow of good cheer after you had yours! Happiest of Holidays from the Resiliency Retreat. s

olidays are all about gifting, squeezing in extra activities, and entertaining visiting friends and family. Ah, the joy of a hectic schedule, people-pleasing, and that feeling of being overwhelmed by it all. Hooray for Holidays! Hey you, busy person! There is no doubt that lots of folks are counting on you in some part for the fulfillment of their own holiday spirit. Therefore, this year give to yourself first, and see how holiday mayhem may have you smiling and enjoying yourself instead of merely coping. Give yourself a temporary escape with a massage. Even a 30-minute massage can help you deal with the extra stress, reviving your spirit during this stressful time of the year. A massage starts by relaxing the body, turning off the mind temporarily, and uplifting the spirit. It’s tough to keep it all in balance most of time, but holidays really test one’s limits. If you are familiar with the benefits of a massage, consider giving one as a gift. How much is it worth seeing one you care about, a loved one or co-worker, relaxed with a smile on their face and in deep gratitude to you! Not quite priceless but this month at the Resiliency Retreat Massage Therapy, you can purchase three 60-minute massages for $150 which can be used by anyone at any time - three

Army Family Team Building by Beth Blevins adapted by Jade Coleman

T

hirteen days after my husband proposed to me, he left for Korea, leaving me a nice little handbook to read about being a military spouse. I read the book, cover to cover, and still felt like I was entering another universe! I was aware that this lifestyle was definitely going to be different than what I was used to, but I could not understand how all this new information was to be implemented and how I was going to adjust to our new life together. During our conversations over the phone, he started speaking a different language. This confusing new language was filled with acronyms, vehicle terms and other “Army talk” that I had no clue about. Wanting to completely understand what he was saying to me, I would ask, “What in the world does that mean?” or “What do these letters stand for?” and he would begin to explain. When we arrived at our first duty station, I felt like a lost child in a park. We had moved far away from my Family and I didn’t know anyone except my husband. I must have had “new and clueless” written across my forehead when my husband’s commander urged me to sign up for AFTB classes. AFTB is an acronym for Army Family Team Building she explained. “This will definitely help you!” At that very moment I signed up to attend a level one class. Don’t get me wrong, the lovely little handbook my hubby had given me was nice, but it could not compare to the class I was about to take. I learned acronyms, military terms, the Army rank structure, customs and courtesies, and even problem solving and community resources. The trainers were GREAT and provided me with papers on the materials we

had covered and a whole new perspective on this life I was committed to with my husband. Also, as an added benefit, I walked out of class with a few new friends that are like family to me now. I connected with a new social circle and support system. I was flying high as a kite with confidence. I finally had acquired an understanding for the Army way of life. AFTB has really made a difference in the Army community and this year we celebrate 17 years since the birth of this wonderful program! On December 16, the Army will celebrate an AFTB Birthday. All AFTB students, past and present, AFTB volunteers, staff and the public are invited to help us celebrate a program organized by Family members who understand what new Family members experience upon entering the Army way of life. Those interested in attending any of the three levels of AFTB classes or taking advantage of a truly rewarding volunteer experience should call the AFTB office at 254-286-6600 or stop by the Lane Volunteer Center right here on post, building 16005. â–˛

COACH

Volunteer Coaches Needed Athletes need connections with positive adults in their community, as a single coach or a caring parent can make a significant difference in the lives of todays youth. To influence youth character development, coaches need to be more than just sports instructors. They must be mentors, counselors, leaders, motivators, and role models. Coaches should teach game skills in addition to life skills. Their attitudes and behaviors set the tone for athletes to follow. Coaches should set clear rules and expectations that are fairly enforced. Coaches should acknowledge how each member contributes to the team at every game or practice, and encourage athletes to do well outside of sport by asking questions and providing support. Coaches should teach responsibility by respecting players, referees, and the integrity of the game. Parents and spectators should model appropriate behaviors, because it is all of our responsibility to ensure that we are instilling positive characteristics in that of our youth. Though winning is important, coaches should provide a supportive, and caring environment. However, creating an environment that stresses fun and mastering skills is also critical and may positively influence athlete development.www.acsm.org If you would like to coach, please call 254-288-3770 for further information. s

he weather gets colder and the sun sets earlier during these winter months but that doesn’t mean your outdoor sporting has to end. There is nothing quite like waking up at the crack of dawn on a crisp Saturday morning, squeezing into your long underwear and preparing for the elements of the hunt. Hunting is a major winter sport here on Ft. Hood, and most of the information you need to get started can be obtained at the Sportsmen’s Center, located at Bldg. 1937, Rod and Gun Loop, 53rd Street and North Avenue. The hunting control office, located inside the Pro shop, contains information on hunting requirements. In order for an individual to participate in the 20102011 hunting season they are required to have the following five items; a state hunting license, Ft. Hood hunting permit, access card, firearm registration, and a certificate of completion from the hunter education course. State licenses, access cards, and Ft. Hood hunting permits are available at the Sportsmen’s Center. State licenses are free with proof of residency. Permits are sold in four

categories based on military status starting at $43 for E-4 or below, $60 for E-5 and above as well as a category for retired and disabled veterans costing $60, and a category costing $100 for civilians. The next education course will be held on December 11 with a $15 charge. Weapon registration can be taken care of at the Provost Marshall office. Gun season began on November 6th in all the access areas. Ft. Hood has a total of 200 acres available for hunting game ranging from turkey to feral hog and small game. White tail deer will be off limits in the Southeast management region this season due to a lowered population. With guided and unguided hunts available for the different skill levels, such low priced licenses, and a huge area available to hunt Ft. Hood really does offer an amazing hunting experience for all skill levels. For additional information on the youth hunt or for any questions in regards to the hunting season please contact the Sportsmen’s Center at 254-532-4552.
