In Moment of Time: Memento & Philo

Hello!,

In Moment of Time: Memento and Philo is an introspection and retrospective towards my art and thoughts. My art always involves being fully illustrated with a children’s like, anime and cartoonish influenced on it. I’ve always enjoyed seeing how people interact with their environment and surroundings. I enjoy every nuances that I experience and see when I go out and interact with people, animals and nature.

The words memento and philo represents how I see and create the artworks that resonate to me. Memento is how I think about art. It is a reminder of a certain feeling, thought and event. The amazing ability of art to capture a certain scene like freezing time, yet that terrifying of reality that nothing lasts makes me feel grateful of everything I have come to create and experienced so far. While Philo can be seen as a noun, “a friend”, and as an adjective, “near and dear.” When I think about it, I want to try treating time as a companion because sometimes it scares me as well. Time can be seen as a friend yet it can be very indifferent especially when I feel like time runs out. Yet, it also allows me to experience them either way for just a moment. So for me, making art is like making time to just take note of a certain feeling, thought and experience, in which its purpose is just to exist for itself.

While riding on the swing, I was thinking about my future and goals

Questions came up on the back of my eyelids

What do I think about myself?

Happy or sad, which is it?

Right or wrong, which is it?

Looking at the elongated shade, rushed by the sunset, I was alone in the park

There is an answer sheet in the sandbox

Squatting down, I kept looking for it even though I can’t see it

Living with a mindset of zero,

We laugh, cry and learn the answers

My planet is in a sky full of stars

Don’t drift around, come here Adding tears and mistakes will bloom in the field of the universe

It’s just the only one.

How the future should be and how the goals should be

The invader came to my heart rudely with a gun in one hand, screaming selfish love by claiming this is justice and this is for you

Happy or sad, which is it?

Right or wrong, which is it?

Like a play where your main role was stolen and interrupted, do you face the reality or run away, which is it?

Which determines the decision?

I know the answer, but I’m worried

Looking into the heart that stays at zero, we worry, cry and time passes

The stage was blacked out

Then lights go on

Even if you get scared or hurt, the world keeps going

There are no applauses and no voices

Future will just go on

Looking up to a starry sky

My palms are getting brown

I’m frolicking while riding on the swing between troubles and happiness

My star signs are scattered in zigzags

The days I spent are on the distant planet

I remember and forget them

You are coming from a revolving past

A shooting star came to my darkened heart

We laugh, cry and learn the answers

My planet is in a sky full of stars

Don’t drift around, come here

Let’s go back to the universe today, where blooming always takes place in the field

NATURE OF THINGS

I always find myself taking pictures of flowers, nature, animals and objects more than people. Well, to be honest, it’s scary to take pictures of people because depending on the timing and framing the message of the picture can morph, and that is something I’m

not really confident in capturing. As for nature and objects, it seems easier because no one really pays attention to them and maybe they don’t judge you, but rather they are just there. For me that is something of value.

Quick practices I did with a big emphasis on light and white backgrounds, as well as playing around with negative spaces.

Tuyom is sea urchin in bisaya. I encountered one while I was out in the beach during one of my breaks. There was something about them that looked terrifying yet inviting. So, I personified it, wondering how it feels.

When creating these types of works, I usually just get information that I have been consuming like for this I believe I was inspired from God of War: Ragnorok. I also played around with the brushes to get certain effects and feelings. (If you’re looking for brushes, I recommend Mathias Zamecki’s brushes).

Meet Shou!

She is a Barista-in-training in the middle of Forest. She enjoys her free time and nature, and she finally found a place where she thinks that is perfect for her to work in. Or so it seems.

Designs & Animations

FIRST

This was my first time animating a wedding video. It was pretty daunting, knowing that it was two weeks before the wedding. The wedding video was about how she and her groom met. At first, I was just preparing to animate a simple loop motion graphic, but for some reason I did not know how to approach it especially I was given more time to think and plan for it.

DESIGNS AND CONCEPT

Sadly, I came up empty handed, even though it was more simpler compared to a full animation. So, I ended up taking the Full Animation Video, maybe because I wanted to give my sister one last thing for her wedding. For some reason, I knew how to approach this, but it was still challenging knowing what tasks I had to do. So, I made the designs and concepts first.

BACKGROUNDS

My light studies and the color script really came handy when making the backgrounds for the wedding video. It made it simpler and clear with the direction I wanted to go. I’ve gone for an impressionistic and watercolor approach to make it feel like it was a memory. Using this style also saved me a lot of time.

FANARTS

It’s a way to experiment with different styles but with my own twists. I usually make fanarts of character when I’m heavily invested in them because I could at least be true to and understand the works of the artists who made them.

Sometimes I make characters without even naming them because I am bad at naming. I feel bad, but in the end they’re the ones that sticks to me the most. It’s their scenes that stands out for me, and I am happy I made them.
