THEBIG AMBIGUITY

Exploring and blurring the lines between good and evil and angels and demons. The gray area between both sides and when one truly identifies as pure good or pure evil. The very idea of defining what is good and evil will only drown us with ambiguity and ultimately to insanity. Leading to either losing or gaining morality.

The animation will have an overall fill of rough and hand textured look, adding a bit of contrast and sense of break of reality and style with the use of cutouts of realistic elements. The song used for this animation is titled “Little Dark Age” by MGMT for its melody and lyrics compliment the visuals and flow of the animation.

To test and simplify the animation, heavy use of black and white elements will be used while applying chromatic aberration effect either hand drawn or post composited. In order for us to successfully interpret the meaning and purpose of the film, the film will play and use a lot of visual symbolism to keep the audience guessing and make them think deeper and outside of the box.

Finally, the animation will depict references from iconic paintings to match the overall theme and to show that animation can also be timeless and limitless.

“We really wanted to play around the idea of angels and demons, good and bad, and yin and yang.”

ISSUE

Majority of animated films and series right now are being treated in a much more mainstream approach and that the exploration of style in animation has become stale and limited. This creates a fear of venturing out and risking ideas and production because of the idea that the animation will not succeed. This fear leads to corporations and studios releasing sequels, remakes, and spin-offs of past successful IPs.

INSPIRATION

Our inspiration for the aesthetic and style of the project is using the artistic style and approach of Ellen Aves in their work on Anlage. With the heavy use of contrasts with black and white, with additional hint of color aberration to give the scenes more vibrations and confusion.

For imagery and symbolism, we took some inspiration and references from Iconic Paintings such as, Creation of Adam by Michelangelo, The Scream by Edvard Munch, Saturn Devouring his Son by Francisco de Goya, and The Son of Man by René Magritte. These paintings depict the complexity of human nature compared to themselves, gods and nature which adds to the depth of the overall theme.

For the overall mood for the animation, we decided to go more dark and thought provoking. Similar to these animated works such as Playground Trailer, and DyE Fantasy Music Video, which provokes the audience to think and question what is happening. Though both references are horror, it serves as a starting point for the overall approach and mood for the project.
