Preface 序

This year's graduation exhibition is titled

a theme which is both suggestive and humble.

A ’Footnote' is defined as an ancillary piece of information printed at theend of a page in a book.

It also contains the meaning that it is something additional or less important. A footnote helps the reader to better understand the content of the book. As Fine Art students over the last three years, we have learnt how to use the footnote system of citation particularly within our studies of Art History. We understand how footnotes must be used to reference and acknowledge the sources of our information and assist us in correctly referencing our sources and avoiding plagiarism. It is what we have learnt and developed within ourselves and which has assisted us in both studying and respecting people and their artworks.

As graduates, what we have learnt and experienced in these 3 years of study and art practice, is like an ancillary piece, which has both added meaning and lit up our lives. The art works on display in thisexhibition are significant to us but we also understand that we are at the beginning of our journey as artists. We have a strong faith in the future and in a confident and humble way anticipate that it will be full of greater possibilities and potential.

註 腳的定 義是印 在一頁 書末端 的附註 資訊；它還包 含?一 個意思，就是 一些附 加或不 那麼重 要的事 情。註腳 幫助讀 者對書 的內容 有更好 的了解。作?修讀純藝術 的學生‧在過 往數年‧我們學到 怎樣在 _ 些學科（例如藝術史 當中運用引文註腳系統。我 們明白必須運 用註腳來引用 並承認我們的 資訊來 源，從中了解到以正 確的方 式引用‧避免 抄襲。經過這 三年以 正確的態度學 習和自 我發展 * 我 們認識 到 如何學 習及尊重人和 他們的 作品。

FOOTNOTESÿ

THE WHAT, WHY, HOW AND WHERE OF ART

At the end of a piece of scholarly writing, usually at the bottom of a page, is a list of numbered footnotes. Each note contains information that adds to or supplements the main text. These notes may tell us a little more about the what, why or how, of the main text they reference. Sometimes they tell us whereto find more information. They may provide extrinsic material or important citations. Without the notes the main ideas may be lacking in something, needing that little bit extra to provide clarity or to substantiate a statement.

Without the footnotes the text can be very slim indeed, rather like a bicycle without wheels.

Often the main text and the footnote work in conversation with one another to create a richer body of knowledge.

If we think about ART as a footnote to our lives then we can take this analogy further. Perhaps the main text of our lives is defined by the living, breathing, working, eating and sleeping aspects that we do each day, as well as accepting the need to earn money and contribute to our communities and society. But without the imaginative additions of an aesthetic quality of life we are left only with the main text of our pragmatic selves and our everyday necessities. ART provides us with that extra aesthetic way of viewing the world, as a way of thinking, seeing and being. It allows us to communicate in ways that reveal more about ourselves, others and the world. ART is the footnote that is so firmly attached to the main text of ourselves that we cannot live without it.

Art School provides us with scope and opportunity to consolidate this aesthetic way of living. ART manifests the power of our imaginations and our skills in making, rendering, and organising the imaginative impulse to create. This year's RMIT Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) graduates demonstrate that through the years of study at the Hong Kong Art School, with the input and guidance of RMIT School of Art and Hong Kong Art School staff, they have grasped the challenge of securing that footnote of aesthetic understanding and creative knowledge to take on the mantle of /artist,. Here is the benefit of an art school training — to become what you want to be, to go beyond the what, and to learn the why of art, as well as the how of its construction, and the where of its influence in one's own and other lives.

I know that this year's graduates of the RMIT BA (Fine Art) degree from the Hong Kong Art School will have an influence on many lives. Their confidence to continue into postgraduate study, or work as professional artists, as art educators, art business or gallery owners, arts managers, or in other entrepreneurial fields, will set them apart from others.

I congratulate the graduates and wish them well for their future lives as graduates from RMIT University. Wherever you are, whatever you do, your footnotes of success will be securely attached to you, as you move on as artists in the world.

FOOTNOTE

The title of this year’s BA(Fine Art) graduate exhibition, 'Footnote’, conjures up a range of possible interpretations. Apart from its application to an important aspect of scholarly writing, it can also be used to indicate an extra comment or information added to something that has just been said, or to describe a relatively unimportant part of a larger issue or event.

It is within the context of providing additional information that the title best illustrates the individual and collective endeavours of the artists in this exhibition. Artists have always strived to fulfill a critical and interpretative role within the societies in which they workÿ to make manifest in visual form a personal view of the world that expresses our unique ability and desire to better understand that world through creative and imaginative enterprise.

The diverse collection of work produced for this year;s graduate exhibition continues to demonstrate the high standards that have become commensurate with the reputation of the BA(Fine Art) program and the contribution our graduates have made to the development of Hong Kong's artistic and cultural vibrancy.

I would like to congratulate all of the academic and administrative staff from both the Hong Kong Art School and the School of Art, RMIT University whose combined dedication and professionalism continues to support and sustain the aspirations and achievements of our students.

Finally, it is the students who deserve our wholehearted congratulations for their commitment to their practice and for continuing to delight and inspire us with their achievements.

I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to all our graduates from the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) programme this year in launching their graduation exhibition.

In the exhibition, the students share with us both their academic and artistic achievements after completing the three-year programme co-presented by the Hong Kong Art School and the RMIT University. And I trust all graduates have experienced their own remarkable journey of art during the course of study.

From the exhibition, I am most impressed to see an amazing range of well-articulated visions and minds crystallized into many pieces of wonderful artworks, presented in different mediums.

The recent rapid development of creative and cultural industries in Hong Kong not only represents a significant opportunity for art students, but also signifies the cultural and economic progression of the whole society. To contribute to this vital development, the School is committed to providing genuine art training and nurturing the new generation of art practitioners.

While the exhibition marks a culmination of years of practice and hard work, it also reveals to us the extraordinary potential of a group of talented emerging artists, creators and innovators.

BAFA GRADUATION EXHIBITION 2011

The past year has indeed been a very eventful and exciting time for the HongKong Art School.

Some memorable celebrative events havemarked theioth anniversary of the School, including reunion dinner and BBQ, joint staff-student exhibition, release of the school publication Time andDistance, and amongst others. On the education front, last year saw the12th year of partnership between the School of Art of RMIT University and the Hong Kong Art School in co-presentingthe Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) (BAFA) Programme. lnOctober2ÿio,43 BAFA alumni came together and hosted the Dual Plasticity Ceramics Exhibition. The exhibition attracted wide publicity and tremendous feedbacks from the art community. It once again ascertains the remarkable achievements attained by the School and its alumni.

Congratualations to the Class of 2011. You are now one of the 650+ BAFA graduates who will potentially become a shining star in the local art scene. Your Graduation Exhibition - Footnote is a signature event of the School and we are proud of your accomplishments. The thematic approach adopted in your exhibition is urbane and truly reflects the mellowness of your conceptual development. I am most impressed that theartworks displayed in the exhibition are diverse in both contents and media, which manifest the uniqueness of our BAFA programme with majors in ceramics, painting, photography and sculpture.

Since its inception in 1998, our BAFA programme is the only studio-based fine art programme at degree level with major on offer in Hong Kong, and we still hold this record today. Seeing the development of the BAFA programme over the past 13 years has been most rewarding. Witnessing another magnificent cohort graduating from the programme is a truly blissful experience.

I wish all graduates all the best with their future endeavours. You have started a new chapter in your artistic journey. Enjoy the moments and celebrate your successes with us in the years to come.

As I consider the diverse range of work presented in the BAFA graduate catalogue, entitled /,Footnoteff it is impossible not to reflect upon the impressive individual developments that have taken place within a relatively short period of time. At the outset, a 3 year commitment, such as is required for the completion of the BAFA degree, might appear to be a long span of time. With hindsight, however my assumption is that for all of the participating graduates in this catalogue, they now feel that the time has passed by so very quickly. The exciting thing is that so much personal development has taken place within the creative and intellectual sphere of each of the artists represented.

Education, particularly within the field of fine art is a journey; a journey of self discovery that can be exhilarating and frustrating at times but nevertheless it never ceases to present exciting challenges on many different levels. The BAFA graduates represented in Footnote have undertaken a significant personal and seminal journey over the past 3 years that has been expansive and profound both intellectually and creatively. Each of the artists represented has rigorously confronted the educational challenge to develop their own unique and personal artistic language over that period of time. As with all journeys there have, no doubt been wonderful moments of discovery and enlightenment, frustrating periods when process and concept refuse to align and a new path must be taken and extended periods of consolidation and refinement in order to realize the ultimate outcome.

Without exception each of the artists here has confronted this challenge with enthusiasm, dedication and integrity and presents work that is a fresh and unique interpretation of their world inthe2ist Century. In their own individual way, each has successfully integrated athe hand, the head and the heart" as one, the ultimate goal of the true artist.

I congratulate each of the artists on their fine personal achievements and recognize the significance of this important milestone in their professional development. As with all milestones, the completion of the BAFA degree can be seen as an end in itself. The real challenge however, for each artist to consider, is that the completion of the BAFA degree is indeed a springboard into new beginnings. I wish each and every one of them, success in their future endeavours.

Plato once said, "A chair in the world is just an imitation or instantiation of the form of chair". He used the word "form" to describe the true essence of material objects in this world. So, a chair is not defined by what we see, but by its nature or ,chair-nessff. What about life and being? How do we define and look at life? For example, what make(s) you not a beetle but a human being, just like the man happened in Kafka's freaky story Metamorphosis? Did technology change the flform of an object we are seeing and also the happening of it? I am curious about that in this world of illusion. 我怕 所以我不吃肉 咀嚼清溪

Artistitatement As people's life gets more and more busy, the relationship among people then becomes more complicated, which leads to weaker trust within our society. As a result, monitoring and being monitored can be easily found in our daily life, just like CCTVs that are installed everywhere. Artist Statement Li graduated from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, Australia. He used painting and photography as the main media in his artworks. By making use of the intercommunicatingyet contradicting relationship between photography and painting, the series of works attempted to reflect the uncertain and ambiguous social situation that we are accustomed to. 李氏畢業於 皇家墨爾本理 工大學‧創作 媒介圍 繞攝影 與繪畫。系 列作品 利用了 兩 者之間既互通 又矛盾的關係‧借此 反映我 們習以 為常地 面對的 那些知 與曖昧 之間 的生活 狀態。

Artist Statement

Viewing at the macro level the unavoidable linkage of society and individuals, the sequence of works depict struggling individuals—both struggles amongst individuals and within the self. They are represented by the interlacing appearances and interwoven movements. Artist Statement Art is drug. Art-making is like taking drugs, makes you satisfied and obsessed, otherwise there's no reason for me to do so. This series starts from my suspicion of today's overloaded televised-imagery environment. My aim is to use painting as a translator to reveal the elements of the television imagery. I was using paintable material to make marks, lines, dots, or just cover the original televised images incidentally. The original televised image was finally twisted into halfsee in the frame has been blocked, blurred, or rapidly fade away, and even an illusion appears.

As explained in Yijing, the balance between Heaven (universe), Land (Earth) and human (life form) is achieved through the five elements. The symbol of Yin and Yang in Yijing-Yin and Yang are dependent but opposing forces that flow in a natural cycle, always seeking balance. They do not merely replace each other but actually become each other through the constant flow of the universe. My final year graduation project describes the lifestyles and attitudes of the post-8os. I have adopted the way youths like to take self-portraits from a top-down angle to draw figures with out-of-scale proportion (big head but small torso). The use of light pink represents the feeling of naivety and as a metaphor for those post-8os who do not want to grow up and their lack of ability to understand themselves. Lastly, the use of fluorescent yellow fading from the inside to the outside implies their wish to become the centre of attention and others' focal point.

Artist Statement Reflectionÿ Memories

The resonance I have when expressing my feeling and telling my experience and story through art make me feel very satisfied. It also helps me in exploring life.

I think "art" is a common language same as music and food. I learned the "art" language in the past three years, and it made me learn a lot, helping me find the exit for my heart. How can I tell people the feeling that cannot be told by words? How can I make people understand my feeling? I believe art will be my only way.

Reflection and memories are the most interesting things in my eye. I use the characteristics of reflection to re-build my memories for the audience. I hope that my memories will set me free and that I will get a resonance from the audience. 經由藝 術去表 達自己 的感受、經 歷和故 事而得 到的共 鳴令我很滿足‧亦 對我在 人生的探索 和看法 有很大 幫助。

Artist Statement

After a few years of studies, I have come to internalize the theme of my project Left. It refers to people who do not necessarily do things in the right or correct way, or not in the usual, generic way. And thus they are left behind and excluded by society. Left is not about physical disabilities; instead, it's a feeling of self-inadequacy.

I have been using tools for the disabled as the medium of my work.

However, I have modified the tools' physical functions. I emphasize their symbolic meaning and tell the stories in my own words. Thus, does not connote any social issue, but refers to my selfexpression. The works are about my own psychological conditions and malfunctioning. An alternative space in the heart of the city is a kind of quiet comfort for the soul. Through the combination of imagination, fantasy, memory and life pieces, the images were transformed into a complex picture, and the use of real images and virtual images could create a new layerof city space. Artist Statement

Transformation of Life Every second, a world of miraculous microscopic events take place within the body, making the difference between life and death. The drama of conception activates the most sophisticated life support machine on earth and leads to the perilous journey of birth.

I am interested in the life cycle because of my daughter’s birth two years ago. The transformation of her is a magic of me. The specific issues I will investigate are the differences that occur during the life cycle and how time affects the relationship between transformation of different humans in life cycle and human control.

Material object was being cherished for it stored and organized our fragments of memories. As material entity cannot resist the ravages of time, what happen when the object is gone? Does our memory abscond with it?

"Serendipity" comes from the story of the three princes of Serendip, who help King Beramo to find his lost lover by asking him to reside in seven palaces to listen to stories from strangers. Unrelated and tedious things are once again related and connected. Let "Serendipity" enter our life. Different generations and different cultural background breed many different types of people. Hogwash (Hogwash), That's why the many different type of people have different degrees of understanding towards different things. Hogwash, (Hogwash). They also give different reactions towards different matters in daily life. Hogwash, (Hogwash). When consciousness or subconsciousness leads, the possibility of taking things for granted is increased tremendously. Hogwash, (Hogwash). When there is the mindset of things for granted" or when the subconsciousness of "taking things for granted1 leads, the possibilities of narrowing down the thoughts and field of vision are greatly increased. Hogwash, (Hogwash).

This state limits the developments of the real and surreal side of life. Hogwash, (Hogwash). Hogwash, (Hogwash). As thoughts are narrowed down, attitudes are narrowed down, behaviors are narrowed down, Hogwash (Hogwash). It's just a way of living (one that we may only differentiate orally in general), Hogwash (Hogwash).

Always keeps oneself in the state of self-reflection, because it is always easy to forget to reflect on oneself.

Although an opposite or mono lifestyle is not a big problem, as one can always experience life in different ways. The above are the concerns that my artwork addresses. As I consider the diverse range of work presented in the BAFA graduate catalogue, entitled /,Footnoteff it is impossible not to reflect upon the impressive individual developments that have taken place within a relatively short period of time. At the outset, a 3 year commitment, such as is required for the completion of the BAFA degree, might appear to be a long span of time. With hindsight, however my assumption is that for all of the participating graduates in this catalogue, they now feel that the time has passed by so very quickly. The exciting thing is that so much personal development has taken place within the creative and intellectual sphere of each of the artists represented.

Education, particularly within the field of fine art is a journey; a journey of self discovery that can be exhilarating and frustrating at times but nevertheless it never ceases to present exciting challenges on many different levels. The BAFA graduates represented in Footnote have undertaken a significant personal and seminal journey over the past 3 years that has been expansive and profound both intellectually and creatively. Each of the artists represented has rigorously confronted the educational challenge to develop their own unique and personal artistic language over that period of time. As with all journeys there have, no doubt been wonderful moments of discovery and enlightenment, frustrating periods when process and concept refuse to align and a new path must be taken and extended periods of consolidation and refinement in order to realize the ultimate outcome.

Without exception each of the artists here has confronted this challenge with enthusiasm, dedication and integrity and presents work that is a fresh and unique interpretation of their world inthe2ist Century. In their own individual way, each has successfully integrated athe hand, the head and the heart" as one, the ultimate goal of the true artist.

I congratulate each of the artists on their fine personal achievements and recognize the significance of this important milestone in their professional development. As with all milestones, the completion of the BAFA degree can be seen as an end in itself. The real challenge however, for each artist to consider, is that the completion of the BAFA degree is indeed a springboard into new beginnings. I wish each and every one of them, success in their future endeavours.

Artist Statement In my final artwork, my concept about Mong Kok Trainer Street and the trainers culture is illustrated through a video and photographs of my performance in Mong Kok Trainer Street, where the shoppers became both my audience and collaborators, interacting with my artwork.

The feedback I collected from my audiences in my performance in MK Trainer Street is very different. Some responses simply referred to waste, while some thought that the trainers werea product and supported more choices, and thatthe brand name was important. There were many different and interesting answers... 建 立個人 藝術風 格路上 的小結

在 後工業時代藝 術也經 歷了範 式轉移‧攝影 是否藝 術這個以往爭 持不休 的課題 忽然間 已經變 得無關 宏旨‧彷彿之前所 有的面紅耳赤 都是一 場誤會。今天‧攝影 作品只 要依循著某些 模式進 行構思、製作 和展示‧就會 被認同 為藝術。作品的媒 體形式 考廉當 然重要‧如 果細 分的話‧就 是藝術 攝影與 用上攝 影的 藝術兩 種了。

攝影術基本 上是西 方世界 的發明‧探 索與推 動也是 歐洲各 國和北美洲為 先：過去本地 攝影人 多推崇 西 方攝影的題材與風格‧並 非全 無道理。但 是隨著 全球化 的趨勢，近年 亞洲各 國都已 經逐漸 發展出

自己的攝影文化‧當中以日本 與中國 大陸最 為突出‧多位名家都 已踏上 世界藝 術的表 演台上‧成 就使 人 圃目。

其 實香港 很早就 有攝影 的紀錄‧攝影 術發明 後幾年 就有照相館在中區大 馬路附 近經營 可惜 這些歷 |

史一直 少為人 知而已。去 年底 的首屆 香港攝 影節裡‧我與 法國攝 影史學 者狄瑞 景博士 (Dr.RSgine

Thieriez)合作舉 辦了一 個名為《香港 最早期 照片》的展覽‧目的 正是希 望大家 能夠更 多注意 和認識 本 地的攝 影歷史。香港 在近兩 百年的 世界發 展中有 很非比 尋常的 經歷，我深信 香港的 蘩術工 作者若 能增 長有關 的知識並且加 以沉醞 他們 的作品 定必會 有更為 精彩的 成績。 |

For me, taking self-portrait allows me to look at myself more clearly.

It is not only about my face or the outer appearance. The important thing is about my behavior.

At the beginning, I tried to use different clothing, posture and makeup to present myself in my self-portraits. But I don't know why and how. I think I just wanted to hide and evade, as I did not know much about myself. And I think that the "Self* in my self-portraits is the most unnatural and disguised me. So I hate this kind of behavior.

A camera represents the photographer (myself) and the viewers (also including myself). At the same time, Tm the model too. In my understanding, this is a way for me to look at myself anew. The behavior and presentation in my photos represent how I look at myself and how I would like other people to look at me.

At the end, I find that pretending not to be in disguise is the most disguised behavior. Disguising myself in front of the camera (others in not disguise*. fact reveals my true self. That's why I say Because this is the human nature.

Artist Statement

Melancholy Beauty-Series II Hong Kong is a highly modernized metropolis, with a very high concentration of buildings on a very small land mass. Through my photographs, I seek to capture the traces left behind by the previous inhabitants of these spaces before the sites are removed, and their melancholy beauty is lost forever.

It is my hope that these images of "old world" Hong Kong will act as a metaphor for the predicament of our modern existence, where the old must be destroyed to make way for the new, and lead you to ponder, in such a world, how do we preserve our historical identity, and what is the cost of modernization and advancement?

Artist Statement At the age of eighteen, my mother and aunts had already married to someone they met only a few times. Because of the words of their parents, they were forced to becomea woman in a short period of time. The "braids" had to be cut off due to the reality, the end of girlhood.

At the age of eighteen, I'm just an ignorant girl, and until now, nothing

has changed.

母親和 幾位阿 姨十八 歲那年 不知就 裡地嫁作人婦‧少女 因父母之言在 一曰間 被迫 成長，總是束 ?辮子 的她們 * 被現 實生活 迫得把「它」剪斷。

Artist Statement

Nowaday, people are so busy and hurry to get ahead. They neglect many details of their life and the world around, such as needlework. Needlework expresses aspectsof humanity. It integrates time andattitude. Havinga long tradition, it is a language of sincerity and subtlety that can convey special meanings. Although itispassingintooblivionÿthasnotvanishedcompletely.

In my work, I embroidered stories to portray details of ordinary everyday objects. The narratives arecontained in a series ofsculptural forms installed in enclosed spaces. A viewer interacting with the sculpture will generate a new story that evokes our awareness of the presence. 每天為 了追趕 ?快樂 的生活而忙碌‧周遭 生活的 細節漸 漸地被 忽略。小時候 媽 媽縫製 的衣服、一家 人在工 廠忙? 剪線的 情景、女工們 一邊刺 ?一邊 談笑的 聲音‧那 麼真摯 和微妙 的回憶‧隨 ?傳統「女 紅」手 藝一樣，漸 漸地被 遺忘。 尋回日常生 活中被 忽略的 事與物‧用 心繡 上生活 的點滴，重拾 快樂的故事。

Artist Statement 逝

The work was inspired by the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin built by Peter Eisenman in memory of those killed in the genocide of Jews in Europe during the Second World War. It was created to focus on the global warming issue that is becoming the focus of the world attention. The artist is visualizing a future when the Antarctic turns green after the melting of the ice cap and the world turns

The reflection from the mirror steel gives an illusive image both in the graveyard and the greenery, awakening the sense of responsibility for nature and the concern for global warming. 當失 去才懂得珍惜，《驚 逝》創意為 關注全 球暖化 危機。作者驚 覺未來 世界變 色‧樹 木全非之景象‧形 式理念 源自德 國柏林 猶太紀 念碑。

After three years, we have finally finished this chapter of our journey at RMIT and are ready to move on to the next stage. Looking back, it has been an exciting and emotional ride for us all. While the journey is far from over, this chapter will undoubtedly be one of the most important and memorable.

With the intensive editorial work and support from the graduation exhibition committee, we have combined the works of the 2010 graduates in this booklet. We wish to extend our gratitude to the printing support from our key sponsor Asia One Product and Publishing, for their driving spirit and enthusiasm towards local art, culture and education. Special thanks go to Peter Lau of Asia One for his unfading passion towards art publishing and creativity, striving to close the gap between readers and Hong Kong's most talented artists.

We are grateful for the untiring help of our editing team led by Canson, Benjamin, Jan and Lee in collecting documentation from the graduates, and special thanks to Teresa Chan for editing the statements of the students. We are also thankful for the work of Shirley and John who ensured the accuracy of the accounting. We have to thank the two MCs Anny and Ronald. Anny especially has given us guidance at every critical stage of the process of the show. The set up of the exhibition hall is the result of hard work by the installation team headed by Boy and his teammates. Also thanks to Namchu, Leo and Bellini for their work on the press release and publicity, which has made the whole event more informative and

educational.

The 14 volunteers of the student committee contributed their time to preparing the exhibition in addition to preparing their own works. They have worked closely towards is the result of a brainstorming session of the goal of sharing ideas. The title the committee that took only 15 minutes, demonstrating the committeeÿ efficiency and creativity. Last but not least, we would also like to thank the staff of RMIT and HKAS for their coordination and multiple forms of moral, financial and intellectual support; which have made our job easier during the past six months.

It is our view that this upcoming graduation is but a footnote of our life. While it is important, it is just the beginning of our life in the art world. This booklet includes a series of art works that the graduates have created and, more importantly, it is bonded by our selflessness and camaraderie.
